Jeon Jong-seo confronts a power struggle as Queen Woo

TVING’s first foray into sageuk brings us back to the Goguryeo era, dramatizing the tumultuous life of historical figure Queen Woo. When the king loses his life, his widow must navigate the political fallout and place a new sovereign on the throne, in order to preserve the royal lineage and protect her own power.

The teaser opens on the front lines, as the austere ruler Go Nam-mu — played by Ji Chang-wook (Welcome to Samdalri) — draws his sword. An arrow is shot, its whistle signaling the start of battle. Go Nam-mu’s troops rush forth with a rallying cry, charging valiantly into the thick of combat — and then, the slice of a blade. A helmet falls to the ground, and it’s Go Nam-mu’s. Bloody and disheveled, Go Nam-mu glances up at his attackers, but he fails to parry their swords in time. The king is dead.

Back in the palace, the titular queen Woo Hee — played by Jeon Jong-seo (Wedding Impossible) — is informed of her husband’s death. Yet this bereaved widow is afforded no time for grief. Since Go Nam-mu passed before he could sire an heir, the courtesy of mourning is instead replaced with the conflict of a power struggle. All eyes are on the throne, and those who crave it will stop at nothing to usurp it.

An impeccably polished blade. Bodies dangling from the rafters. The queen’s sister Woo Sun, played by Jung Yumi (Celebrity), wails in despair at her reflection. Conspiracies and cabals are forming within the palace walls, and their poison is concocted for none other than Woo Hee. “Don’t you think a new queen is needed?” whispers the court of ministers. After all, this is the golden opportunity for change.

A time of turbulence and danger is imminent, solidifying Woo Hee’s resolve to take the reins of her own destiny. In the next twenty-four hours, she must crown a new king — or risk losing everything and everyone she cherishes. “Now, you must protect yourself,” Go Nam-mu urges his queen. The ensuing chyron echoes his sentiment — Woo Hee must survive, on her own.

With that, Woo Hee bravely takes up the sword, stepping out of her palanquin and brandishing her blade against her attackers. Alas, even if she fends them off, there are more foes lurking within the palace. Kim Mu-yeol (No Way Out: The Roulette) cuts an imposing figure as the prime minister Eul Pa-so, who yearns for more beyond his position as the royal advisor, and it’s hard to tell whether his brows are furrowed from concern or condescension. Then there’s Lee Soo-hyuk (Tomorrow) as the vicious prince Go Bal-ki, whose repressed ambition has him thirsting for the opportunity to finally step out of his older brother’s shadow.

It seems Queen Woo may only have one person on her side — the head of the royal guard Mu Gol, played by Park Ji-hwan (Gyeongseong Creature), who pledged his loyalty to the late king. Alas, Mu Gol’s allegiance is no secret, and he finds himself faced with the tip of a blade. If Woo Hee wants to defend her position, she’ll have to rely on herself. Alone in a forest, shrouded in shadows, Woo Hee steels herself. Her life is her own to forge. “Do you wish to hear of my destiny?”

Helmed by PD Jung Se-gyo with scripts penned by Lee Byung-hak, Queen Woo is slated for an August 29 release.

Sounds and looks very promising, I will definitely take a look.
According to MDL there are only 8 episodes. If it's mainly just about what happens in the 24 hours after the King's death, that kind of makes sense.

@sicarius,
I'm not sure about this one. Her speech and mannerisms are off and unconvincing. It looks like her crown was borrowed from Silla.
Based on the soldiers' armor, Baekje is the enemy here. Early Baekje, especially during King Geunchogo's era.

I was so looking forward to this, but now I don't know.

Man, your knowledge of the history is so inspiring, I want to know because all knowledge is worth having, but my ignorance will allow me to enjoy this at least based on the trailer. It is a toss up.

Don't mind me. I watched too many sageuks from the early 2000s and can't get it out of my head.
If it helps ease your mind, the history of this period is vague and contains errors. It's best to consider it with a degree of skepticism.

Idk about crowns/armor, but her mannerisms in this trailer are indeed light years away from anything period OR regal. Someone on the other site said she moves/acts like a modern "tough girl" and I cannot unsee it now.

Also, did they tweak the plot? Where is the prince destined be her husband#2? I thought he's gonna be important, if not ML per se, but apparently not...

But who knows how they really walked/moved then as opposed to what the earlier dramas imprinted on the viewers. She would have had to be tough to survive so some swagger shouldn’t necessarily be regarded as era inappropriate.

Pretty sure a proper walk befitting Queen she is would've involve a better posture at least. One can move with a swagger AND look dignified while at it, those are not mutually exclusive things. THIS is not convincing me as a viewer that she was also a tough warrior - it only makes me question her royal manners (and actress/PD capabilities).

But basing all of that in a 56 second clip seems harsh in my view, however, you clearly feel strongly about this so…

2

@dncingemma can't I? Even when it sticks out like a sore thumb, esp compared to everyone else's seamless so far performances? She is titular FL, her portrayal CAN and SHOULD be a valid deal-breaker in terms of whether the show is worth watching altogether. And if I ever crave a poor-quality 3 Kingdoms sageuk, I'd rather just rewatch HWARANG...

5

I hear you. I just want to give her the benefit of the doubt. You are almost always reasonable in my view so it’s fine if disagree from time to time!

2

@dncingemma I'll still wait for Ep1 to see how it goes. If bad dramas can have misleadingly great trailers, surely the opposite is also possible, right?

6

It's the swagger when she is walking, it's very modern, quite opposite to the 'walk with the books on your head' kind of a grace most women in ancient times were forced into, .....and the petulant look rather than one that shows resolve....I am surprised because she was excellent in Wedding Impossible.

3

I'm basing the armors and crowns on past epic sageuks. Baekje generals were identified with round neck covers like (King Geunchogo and General Gyebaek); but according to research, Gorguryeo generals and soldiers also had the same style of neck cover. So, Baekje may not be the enemy, but the Hans.
Shilla's gold crowns in sageuks (Queen Seon Deok) are based on actual crowns excavated from ancient tombs. There are none on Goguryeo.

Her first husband is Go Nam Moo ( the oldest prince, King Gogukcheon), played by Wookie.
Her second husband will be Go Yeon Woo ( the 4th prince, King Sansang), played by Kang Seok.
Levirate marriage was a thing back then. The elder brother's widow could marry one of her husband's siblings.
I think the ambitious Go Bal-gi (Lee Soo-hyuk) would make a more interesting character than the 2nd husband.

He surely will since his role is obviously bigger, but I just find it funny that future rebound hubby - and next King - is such a non-presence in the plot after all. It's like SHE was the ruling Queen who just needed someone to marry while he became her decorative consort lol.

Should've just marry them all at once tbh, harem fights would've surely distract the guys from having dangerous political aspirations...

She probably wants power to protect herself and her clan and avoid becoming a nun for the rest of her life. The weakest candidate seems to be the 4th prince—someone she could control.
Her crown resembles Queen Seon Deok of Silla, the first ruling queen in the three-kingdom era. Goguryeo never had a ruling queen, but they are trying hard to sell her as one.

IIRC, in Silla, women could marry multiple times, one husband at a time. I'm guessing the same would have been true in Goguryeo.

She could have been some kind of a black widow like Mishil. Kill off the weak husbands and keep the ex-husbands with their army in her circle.

5

@kiara I mean, ofc it's all about power (but not wanting to be forced into nunnery at one's prime is good enough reason too). Would've make a fun drama if all of this was secretly a plot of 4th prince - off the King hyung, pretend to be harmless and good potential pawn, marry the sis-in-law by giving her false impression she is gonna be in charge afterwards, let her get rid of competition for you, profit!

Mishil is an eternal inspiration for us all, girl really knew how to handle her resources without wasting any.

6

@gikata: You never know until you tried! 😂

Two is to one for Hwarang is a challenge but not undoable.

0

Kiara this is one of the three Kingdoms right?

Yes, the Three Kingdoms era consisted of Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje. The Gaya confederacy was also part of it but was annexed by Silla in 562.

5

The crown at the end (the thumbnail one) is from Silla; the other one... I'm not sure.
At least the swords aren't curved 🙄.

I understand your concerns, though. I'm still looking forward to it but I have never had great expectations beyond wanting to see 3K on screen again 😂.

5

@gikata 🤣🤣🤣 It's true, it's true, there has been worse! I must confess, I sometimes still rewatch that one crack video poking fun at it, it's just so funny.

5

We are planning a CW next year because one lovely beanie loves it and she has agreed to let us tear it apart as long as we say one good thing (or two) while doing it 😂

4

@gikata and @sicarius,

I thought Seo Yeaji was quite good. She had a small part in "The Throne," so she was well-trained. I've always wanted to see her as the FL in a sageuk.

2

@minniegupta1 I may be ready for this, but is that lovely Beanie - and everyone else, for that matter - truly ready for MY uncensored take on that drama? Mild spoiler: as much as the show was universally panned for being objectively bad, I also have plenty of subjective takes about WHY it is bad. So again, pls think twice first. If you're still in for some harsh pain anyway, tag me when the time comes^^

Rules are you have to say 2 good things for 1 bad. Thinking that won’t work for @gikata 🤣🤣. Maybe we can have one positive wall and one negative. I’m in it for the fun of the show not the tear apart. Maybe I’m the only person in the beanie kingdom that thought it was fun. If that’s true I’ll just go off in my corner and let you guys have fun. @claire2009 @seeker

@Claire2009

Hwarang CW list ❤️

1

@23new2kdrama

Rules are you have to say 2 good things for 1 bad

Yep, the math is certainly not mathing in this case - I can say like 4 good things about a drama AS A WHOLE. Maybe 5-6 - if I twist my brain really hard. This is not the kind of critical entertainment you're looking for, obviously. Have fun without me then, yall)))

3

I thought Hwarang was fun too but that is mainly because I am ignorant at true history of that period 😂😂😂. That doesn't mean I didn't find some parts much ridiculous. I guess we can try and twist the rules a bit. I will say more good parts on @gikata behalf 😂😂 so we can reach an equilibrium.

3

@bunnysonaki thank you for this generous offer, I'll think about it then)))

3

@gikata My Pleasure 😊😊 I genuinely look forward to read your thoughts both subjective and objective.😊

2

I will definitely count myself out of this CW, I will have even less nice things to say than @gikata 😅.
My contribution will be merely to reshare the aforementioned crack video when the times comes.

2

@sicarius you aren't trying to awaken my competitive spirit with that wording, are you?)))

I think I know which crack video you're talking about, it's a great one.

P.S. @minniegupta1, is HAPPINESS still on table or was it postponed AGAIN? Asking to decide whether I should proceed with 2-3 other shows on FF purely for thirst purposes or they'll need to wait while I add hot zombies to my already vampires-filled Ghost Month's watchlist^^

1

@gikata: Happiness starts the Thursday in two weeks 😍 (23rd August)

I can't wait. We have four more to go in Just Between Lovers/Rain or Shine. Tomorrow (Thursday) and then next Thursday.

@claire2009 @seeker Am I right?

2

Minnie That’s right, Happiness starts on Aug 23rd @gikata

2

@gikata not intentionally! I would have to twist my brain for even 3 good things about the show is all 😅

1

"Happiness starts the Thursday in two weeks 😍 (23rd August)"
This was the information I was looking for.

Interesting you mention MBC’s BLACK OUT because that is one of two upcoming dramas I hope to watch. Episode one airs in less than 2 weeks on Aug. 16. All things being equal BO should first appear on Kocowa’s “Coming Soon” list then appearing in Viki’s “Coming Soon” list.
(MBC being a part owner or former part owner of Kocowa).
I have seen one place that lists Hulu as BO’s streaming location. At this point I don’t trust that information. Hulu is owned by Disney+ and in my experience dramas are first licensed to Disney+ (thus blocking US access) and then perhaps the drama is released to Hulu (and available to US viewers).

I have no availability angst for my second drama tvN’s LOVE NEXT DOOR because LND will be available on Netflix with episode one airing Aug. 17.
