[Drama Chat] Who’s your favorite heroine?

It might be impossible to choose just one, but I thought it would be fun to pick and share favorite characters — and we’re starting off with your favorite K-drama heroine. Do you have one who comes to mind? Are there too many to choose from? And does your favorite heroine mean the one you relate to the most, admire the most, or just find damn compelling? (Answer at will; there are no wrong answers here.)

I’ll go first: Yes. There are too many favorites for me to choose from, but the scrappy-I-will-survive Candy archetype? Don’t hate me, but I really love it. Early in my drama-watching days, this character type was new to me, and I loved the idea of heroines who just keep the heck going no matter what comes at them — ranging from the rooftop apartment setbacks, to humiliation at school, to utter tragedy in their families.

I still love those heroines, too, but the more nuanced and compelling character tend to be the ones who stick. For instance, I think both sisters in My Liberation Notes are at the top of my list for compelling and interesting heroines. And if I have to pick a heroine who is most relatable? It’s probably Yumi from Yumi’s Cells.

Who’s your favorite K-drama heroine?

Let the chatting begin!

As an aside, Kim Se-jeong showed herself to be such a great comic actress in that show that I really hope that Drunken Romance gives her a chance to showcase more than Samantha and Rachel.

Also, I loved her job as that character, researcher in the Food Development department. I've actually made one of the dishes she "created," white kimchi ravioli, several times. Its a great fusion dish!

Ooh, I've searched for a recipe for white kimchi ravioli and finally made something up after I could source white kimchi over here (not easy to find) … it wasn't good. Would you share your recipe? What did you do for sauce?

You've made a mistake asking--as an enthusiastic (not very good) amateur cook, I'll bore you to tears with food talk! BUT since you asked.....

1. I just used a very basic white kimchi recipe, something like this one:
https://mykoreankitchen.com/baek-kimchi-non-spicy-white-kimchi/

2. For the kimchi, I was able to find jujubes in the H-mart, but processed them with chestnuts, the boiled, pre-shelled kind in a foil package, rather than pine nuts

I then mixed the (finely chopped) white kimchi with the chestnut/date paste to make the ravioli filling.

3. Instead of a cream based or traditional tomato based sauce, I used a romanesco sauce, mixed with a little gochujang to complete the "fusion" elements of the dish.

Since ravioli traditionally can have chestnut based filling or a cabbage based filling, its not that great a leap. I assume that Korean restaurants or Korean cooks were making it well before Business Proposal, but I haven't been able to find a history of the recipe.
Anyway, sorry to go so far off topic!

"Flower of Evil" was my last drama with MCW. I'm still waiting for a reunion sageuk with Lee Jun-ki. Comeon MBC.
MGY had health issues, so it'll be hard for her to come back. Her performance in "Painter of the Winds" alone made a fan out of me for life.

@kiara that sageuk should've happen like 10+ years ago already! Now the chances are obviously slim...

Danoh in Extraordinary You> She decided to change what the writer had planned for her aka her death and she fought for her own destiny. And her energy was contagious!

Bong-Hee in Suspcious Partner> She was a normal young woman, not a genius, not a candy who suffers but always smiles, etc. She tried to be independant but her situation made things difficult so accepted a little bit of help.

Lee Hwi in the King's Affection> She had to learn to survive in the Palace but finally she can learn to be herself and to be a King!

Oh Hae-young in Another Miss Oh> She was completely chaotic but she has good reasons. I loved her energy and her fragility at the same time.

- FL of QUEEN INHYUN'S MAN. I know many Beanies wanted something entirely else from her character and story arc, but why? She was perfect for that story and that ML. Btw, I also cannot freaking stand LIVE UP TO YOUR NAME's FL whom likely the very same people consider a "fixed" version of her... Nope, just nope. Ugh. Lashing out on a man for accidentally triggering your trauma by DYING in front of you is a peak entitled brain-dead moronicy I firmly believe no budding romance could ever recover from.

- FL of IOTNBO. No, I'm not an edgy kid worshiping her as some dark feminist icon to look up to, ewww))) It was just wonderful for once to have a FL that combined epic unapologetic bitchiness, witch-from-a-dark-fairytale stylishness and blatant chaotic horniness, all that without looking like a caricature. Yes, I know she was a REAL menace, deeply twisted bio-hazard on designer heels and almost certainly danger to society. Those were her best traits, your honor!

- FL of MR QUEEN. I think everyone agrees that our boy Bonghwan made a fabulous woman after all... too bad drama retconned her back into boring ass peacock of a dude (but this time depressed instead of overly cocky).

Honorable mentions: Arang of AATM (before her noble idiocy arc), Saebom of HAPPINESS, damn-I-forgot-her-name FL of TUNNEL (the crime psychologist lady - such an amazing weirdo, this one!), ML's daughter in TWO WEEKS (she was the true FL there, I will kill on this hill).

IOTNBO: "Those were her best traits, your honor" indeed. I loved her too. Even with all that, I feel like she wasn't worse than the regular obsessive/stalker ML/SML's in kdramaland.

I finished it solely because of KNG (and it's arguably my fave performance of his, even above Father Hottie), but damn, did her character made it HARD for me! I felt like drama's narrative was unfairly very biased towards excusing whatever mistakes she said and did all while admonishing and mocking the hell out of ML when he was in the wrong even slightly (or not at all, but someone had to take the blame). That wasn't funny to me. Nor very romantic, despite actors having great chemistry - poor bb Heo Im could've done so much better.

IOTNBO FL wins big time by owning up to all her shortcomings instead of trying to present herself as a faultless angel. The object of her stalkering was simultaneously rightfully annoyed, horrified AND turned on, and drama did not sugarcoat any of that, bless!

#BongHwanBestGirl! Isn't it amazing how lack of a challenge in life can affect personal growth?

Now that season 2 is coming we must call it "Father Hottie 2" LMAO. Thanks for the laughs!
And yes! It wasn't funny the way she treated him. One of the reason why I think "enemies to lovers" is a trope that needs to be carefully developed is because I don't see anything romantic in two people treating each other like trash.
Friendly/harmeless bickering it's okay. But this was just one person (FL) draining the life out of the other (ML) for no reason. I don't even know what kind of trope is that... early 10's ML syndrome? aka. rude much?

IOTNBO: "FL wins big time by owning up to all her shortcomings instead of trying to present herself as a faultless angel".
Heck yeah. Say it louder for all the annoying SLs in the back, please.

I truly hope S2 at least won't tarnish my love for those characters, because expecting something as good or better after so much time seems pretty unrealistic. Stark downgrade in quality of writing in VINCENZO made me really nervous, and I initially anticipated sequel a lot(((

I guess someone must be an unreasonable jerk in k-romcom OTP to keep plot going, but softie Im was not up for the task It's always a thin line between amusing bickering and outright maliciousness. I wonder if this trope simply works better in settings were leads are REAL enemies with super high stakes and not just, idk, petty corporate rivals? Then again, it probably makes eventual romance even less convincing... All in all, it boils down to the writing - chemistry is also important, but as this drama proved, it cannot do all the heavy lifting.

Most of SLs are snakes by default, that's why I rarely bother with them altogether. The best ones at least have something else to scheme for other than constantly raining on OTP's parade, but those are quite rare, sadly.

2

Vincenzo, right... Another show I couldn't finish.
But even if the script isn't as tight as S1, at least we can trust in the cast and their chemistry.

Talking about "enemies" I think Father Hottie did a good job potraying this rivalry well. They didn't become lovers, but I wouldn't have mind it because their relationship had a good development.
Like you said, it didn't begin with outright maliciousness. It wasn't really personal.

"Most of SLs are snakes by default" yep. The best ones have their own business to worry about.

1

True that unapologetic FL was very appreciable is It's ok to not be ok. She makes up for all the fearfull candies.

The FL I relate the most, to the point of seeing myself reflected in her, is Go Dok Mi (Park Shin Hye in Flower Boy Next Door). Introverted, homebody... but willing to go out when she thinks somebody (a dog, in her case) needs help or is in danger. She even works from home as a copy editor, which is something I studied too.

But my favorite heroines sometimes are quite different from me.
Like the brave, determined and clear minded Seung Wan (Lee Joo Myung) in 25-21, or the funny, bad-mouthed Sam Soon (Kim Sun Ah) or Go Se Ra (Nana) in Into the ring.

Excellent thread, too many great heroines to choose from which is a credit to kdrama! Yoon Eun-hye in Coffee Prince really defined the kdrama heroine for me for a while. I can't even pick just one for Kim Sun-a, I have to list her characters in My Lovely Sam-soon, City Hall, and Scent of a Lady. Go Hyun-jung has been rightly mentioned for her Queen Mishil, but I'm going to cite her in The Queen's Classroom just for that speech at the end. Kim Ji-won in Fight My Way personifies the show's title (also, best bad aegyo). Jung So-min in Because This Life Is My First. Seo Hyun-jin in Another Oh Hae-young. Park Min-Young played fun heroines in City Hunter and Healer, but my favorite is her character in Her Private Life. I have to mention two for Lee Bo-Young, God's Gift: 14 Days and Mother. One more and I'll stop, Bae Doona in Forest of Secrets.

To me, "heroine" is different than "female lead". The former requires being actually heroic. So the abovementioned Samantha & Rachel don't really qualify no matter how much I liked them.

This is a super interesting question and I didn’t have a clear answer of what kind of heroine I find the most compelling. So I went through my drama list and picked out the ones that I’ll never forget and then tried to think of things they had in common. I think they mostly fall into two categories for me:

1. Heroines who are overcoming impossible odds/tragedy and are still putting one foot in front of the other. (This is kind of a more interesting take on the Candy for me.) It’s not that they maintain sunny optimism all the time, but they are going to continue fighting for survival/loved ones/their country until they absolutely can’t anymore. There is something admirable and compelling about that to me, and it understandably happens in sageuks a lot. Examples are Ae-shin from Mr. Sunshine, Dam-i from The King’s Affection, Jae-i from Our Blooming Youth, and Jun-hee from A Time Called You.

2. Heroines who are a bit bitter and savage. (Let’s not think too hard about what it says about me that these are my favorites. 😅) I love their dark backstories, their scathing remarks, their relentlessness, all of it masking deep pain/heartbreak/trauma. Maybe they are a little ambiguous, maybe they aren’t quite likable at first, but in the end I’m always rewarded for sticking with them, and these characters are the ones I feel most loyal to. Examples are Se-ri from Crash Landing on You, Man-wol from Hotel del Luna, Ji-an from My Ajusshi, Cho Yeong/Naksu from Alchemy of Souls, Yeon-soo from Our Beloved Summer, and Woo-joo from Call it Love.

Special shoutouts: Soon-deok from The Matchmakers, who doesn’t really fit into these categories but I loved her anyway. Yeon-soo from Our Beloved Summer and Ha-neul from Doctor Slump who were two heroines that I found uncomfortably relatable.

Ki Jeong ! I'm probably the only person that had Ki Jeong as their favorite sibling, but I just loved that she was raw and imperfect but not villiainized in a way rarely seen in kdramaland before.

I don't like how kdramas try so hard to make FLs "good" and "perfect" or "special". And I love my badass girls too, but I also dislike how we've come to the conclusion that you're only cool if you can kick ass or if you wear suit pants or something.
If we can love jerk MLs, why not give FLs a break and let them be imperfect too?

I love girl crushes like Hee Do from 25-21 or Sae Beom from Happiness, but I feel like they make the standards too unrealistic for many struggling, chaotic, and just regular girls out there.

I love that Yu Mi from Yu Mi's Cells was a little messy and insecure but also a dreamer. And I liked that Yeon Joo from W was chaotic and couldn't fight but she was the one saving Kang Cheol all the time. I also love how Ji Ho from Because This Is My First Life just wanted to have a freaking house and peace of mind. Relatable queen. And I adore how Ki Jeong from My Liberating Notes just wanted to be loved. She had a haraboji's temper and no filter but she deserved to be loved like anyone else.

And, at the moment, I admire how Mi Rae from Romance in the House wants to give her mom a good life.

I like how she barely smiles but that doesn't mean she's rude or mean. And she isn't planning on healing or babysitting the ML, instead she just relates to him. And she doesn't need to talk about her past trauma 24/7 or give a speech about how much her mom did for her, but it's obvious that her mom sacrificed a lot to raise her and she wants to repay that.
She's the coolest FL at the moment in my book. She isn't saving the world, fighting bad guys, or becoming a big icon for the nation, but she's doing her best. I like that about her.

In conclusion, my favorite kdrama heroine is... All of them? But especially my relatable queens! 😂😆

Another prompt that I can't resist. Man, Dramabeans writers really know how to stir up people's emotions ^^ To be honest, the kind to a fault heroine who carries everyone's burdens on their shoulders is the exact opposite of who I am in real life. In real life, I am probably more often like the adversary to said heroine - snarky, vindictive, etc ^^ But maybe that's why I'm drawn to these types of FL's, because they're who I want to be. In my friends circle, there is actually one that is almost completely this type, you know, like paying back parents' debt, losing their home, etc. Her life has been like a drama with ups and downs but the most amazing part is that there was actually a doting prince charming waiting for her at the end. She is living the happily ever after of dreams as I type. So I aspire to be more like her (even though I'd never admit it!) hoping that maybe trying to be a better person would help me land a dreamboat someday (ha) People like Eun Chan in Coffee Prince do exist in real life and guys really do fall in love with them. That's why I keep watching dramas with plucky kind heroines hoping some of that will rub off on me. As mentioned, the classic ones are Coffee Prince, Kim Sam Soon, Stranger, Attorney Woo, My Secret Terrius, Tunnel (forensic expert), Smile You, etc. I'd like to mention some that are less known but deserve to be appreciated in the same vein: Gangnam Scandal, The Promise, Want a Taste, Queen of Housewives, Wok of Love, Bulgasal. The FL's in Queen of Housewives and Smile You represents the type of heroine with more feisty and snarky sides but still incredibly lovable. In this way, they are the most realistic.

And the queen of pluck goes to actress Kim Nam Joo in her bespoke role in My Husband Got a Family. She's no saint but you see why and understand where she's coming from. She's no saint but she still does her best to get along and live with the curveballs and stressful people in her life.

My choices are definitely also what @jls943 has in mind for your #1 favourite type of heroines and I can already think of 3 from the top of my head that I always love and their stories (a.k.a. The dramas they come from) will always and forever be in my “Re-watch List” forever and always:

1. Kang Hye Soo from Marriage Contract
2. Ji Eun Soo from Save Your Last Dance for Me
3. Woo Young Woo from
Extraordinary Attorney Woo

All three women—though K-dramaland showcases them as a Candy— they stand out for me because they also exhibit grit and an inner strength that is so hard to come by and that is NOT present in most stereotypical Candy Female Leads that we see in a patriarchal society such as S.Korea. With the exception of Candy #2 on my list, #1 and #3 experience things that are quite true-to-life and I am quite empathetic to their reactions and how they choose to go about their circumstances and how they face each day and those around them in the face of life and death situations and situations related to a person’s disability (I am a persons with disability and ongoing health issues, too, so I know full well what it’s like). As for #2 on my list, even though her experiences are less relatable and made more for K-drama sake (I mean, encountering an amnesiac rich Male Lead?? That’s a stretch for real life lol), her character is what I admire and relate to more compared to her circumstances.
Again, all three of these FLs exhibit that grit and that quiet inner strength that just grabs at my heart and makes me root for them, and also encourages me to want to be just as strong as them and to remember to keep on living— and try to live well, too— despite what the world throws me.

I mean, when life gives you lemons, you gotta make a damn good lemonade, right?? 😊

I have so much admiration for heroines like Jeon Do-yeon in Crash Course in Romance, or Im Sol from Lovely Runner, or Go Eun-ha from My Dear Mobster, ordinary women in tough circumstances who kept their good humour, optimism and kindness to live good lives doing what they loved.

I adore Mi-jeong from My Liberation Notes and Seo Hye-jin from The Midnight Romance (Stress) in Hagwon mostly because they feel most like me.

The woman I aspire to be is Queen Im Hwa from Under The Queen's Umbrella.

But like the lovely @tabong said: give me all the Queens that are not trying to be like every other heroine. I will always fall for those and they teach me the most.

Kang Min Joo: Second to Last Love.
Sung Deuk Mi: Her Private Life
Oh Se Young: Another Miss Oh
Bae Ta Mi: Search WWW
Do Da Hae/ Bok I Na: Atypical Family
Go Mun Young: It's Ok to Not Be Ok
Jung Soon Deok: The Matchmakers
Tang Ying: Fake it Till You Make It (Cdrama)
Zhuang Jie: Will Love in Spring (Cdrama)

Wow... this has been so enlightening for me too! Going through my list, I think I have a "type"?
All the women I picked off the top of my head, are feisty, independent, successful, and don't really "need" a man in order to be complete. I love that!
So maybe it's wish- fulfilment that these roles were so memorable to me.

There are a lot of them, honestly. Every drama I've finished and loved wholeheartedly was because the fl was compelling, and they range in personality from Dan Oh in Extraordinary you to Woo Joo in Call it Love, but i think three really stand out for me just because they move the story in such interesting ways.

Hye Young in My Father is strange, she was such a force of nature. She was funny, cocky, vulnerable, smart, persistent, realistic and so loving in her own unique way. I loved everything about her and the way she loved herself enough to not settle for things foisted on her, and loved her family enough to fight so hard to clear her father's name.

Hae Ryung in Rookie Historian. She was quirky in the best way, she knew what she wanted and she worked hard to get it, and not only did she get the career she wanted and worked so hard for, she got the cute young prince she also started wanting on the way, without sacrificing her independence or dreams.

Young Jin in Nobody Knows. This one is partly because i have a giant crush on Kim Seo Hyung, but also because there's something so magnetic about the closed off and sightly tragic but valiant and persistent detective. She was a closed book without being one dimensional, she was detached but not fully and showed she cared to people who she valued in her own way, and she was both really smart and slightly awkward in a very human way.

Our Beloved Summer - Kook Yeon Soo - I relate to her professional struggle at the beginning
The Princess' Man - Lee Se Ryung - I learned from her battles on how to defy her family without being disrespectful and ruining her integrity
Moving - Lee Mi Hyun - she is a badass mom

Go Moon Young from It's Okay to Not be Okay is just so unapologetically herself and excentric that she's a joy to watch, and she has her heroine's journey in her story and learns and develops. I loved that.
Ki Seung Nyang (Ki the Empress) will always be my favourite, because she is so very human - she knew how to survive, she made some very headstrong very stupid decisions and I will never understand her crush on Wang Yu, but I admired her intelligence, how she grows and adapts and still is very true to herself. Ha Ji Won portrayed a very flawed human being, which makes her so fascinating to watch.

I will never understand her crush on Wang Yu

Pretty sure it was written for patriotic™ reasons because Korean audience wouldn't appreciate a true love story between their woman and Yuan Emperor. Wasn't the whole show largely made to whitewash controversial image of titular FL? The symbolism is very on the nose here: she's been, uhm, intimately involved with two men representing both their respective countries, but make no mistake - her heart was always with the right one!

It was really interesting to read through these lists, since like many of you I watch kdramas primarily for the female characters, most of whom I consider heroines for various reasons. I would share many of the favorites listed here, although I do tend to watch light romance pretty exclusively, which limits the number of physically “kick ass” heroines. I have noticed to my great dismay that policewoman characters who easily subdue thugs and outwit killers do not often get worthy romantic partners.

My first category of favorites are those characters who remind me of some of my past female academic colleagues—beautiful, bookish, reflective. These would include Oh Mii Joo of Run On, and two characters played by Lee Na Young, Park Ha Kyung in One Day Off(probably one of my favorite characters ever) and Kang Dan-I of Romance is a Bonus Book.

Then there are the characters who “engender” awe—I would actually be too intimidated to meet them—Jung Geum Ga in Hyena for her toughness, shrewdness, and (Kim Hye-soo’s) beauty; and speaking of beauty, Kim Hee-sun as Goo-ryeon in Tomorrow, who was so mesmerizing with her pink hair she single handedly kept me watching that show as it descended into inane sentimentality.

There are some heroines who I like because they remind me of young women I observed as a father: Kim Bok Joo of Weightlifting Fairy (confident extraordinary athlete, uncertain about everything else) Lee Kwon Sook of My Lovely Boxer (pushed by a parent into an activity that she was very good at and both loved and hated because it was part of her identity but not her free choice) and Joo In-Hae of Heartbeat, competent and self-sufficient, uncertain how to establish a relationship without giving up her independence.

My favorite female characters-- quick witted, wisecracking, sometimes sarcastic, but also empathetic, are usually side characters—the loyal friend, the fellow office worker, the Mom, or the Grandma. I will not enumerate examples, since there are a so many of them. I guess two recent leads that come closest are Jung Soon Deok of Matchmakers and Shin Jae-rim of Dreaming of a Freaking Fairytale

Finally, it is a little hard for a man in his sixties to directly identify with young women characters, though I certainly share a lot of traits with Yeom Gi-jeong in Liberation Notes—rambling mode of discourse without a filter, somewhat obnoxiously insecure. But I guess I have to say that in terms of identification my favorite would be Seong Doek Mi of Her Private Life trying to present and interpret aspects of creative people's lives to the public, while hiding a secret obsession, that everyone who finds out about laughs at in disbelief because its so weird for a male retiree in the U.S.—in my case, not kpop idols, but kdrama rom-coms!

I'm currently watching Jumong for the umpteenth and it is almost time for the "second place fling" plot to take central conflict. Immediately I noticed it was almost time, my desire to continue waned drastically. To compound things, I have no idea what episode the conflict occurs so I don't know where to brace myself or better still skip.

I loved Jumong to the moon. But, Jumong did So Seo-no dirty and I'm not forgiving them for it, ever.

My favorite hero character is Lee Ji un, the incredibly smart, out of luck but tough-as-nails FL in My Ahjusshi. Interesting. I can name heroines from Chinese dramas, Japanese dramas and Taiwanese dramas that I like, but I haven't really liked a heroine from a Korean drama. If it's just a character played by a female actor, I liked Go Eun Chan from Coffee Prince. But, I feel like she is not really heroic. I think the flaws of Korean female characters make me not have a favorite. Not flaws as in weaknesses but sudden character changes or other behaviors that I make no sense and take me out of the drama.

Goo Hae-Ryeung from ROOKIE HISTORIAN GOO HAE-RYEUNG - This FL has courage in spades and the chutzpah to defy her destiny.

Goo Ryeon from TOMORROW - She led a ragtag team with the toughest assignment of all which is to prevent suicides. And she worked on cases involving violence against women despite being herself a victim of war-time rape. That spine of steel that she has would put many so-called heroic MLs to shame.

My favorite female characters are all heroines to me: strong, practical women with the courage of their convictions.

Woo So-Ji in Because This Is My First Life - I noticed that the two other female leads in this show have gotten some mentions here, but So-Jin (played by the awesome Esom) is the one who really speaks to me. She’s an “anti-Candy”: strong, worldly, no-nonsense, and a fiercely loyal friend. Because she’s faced derision for her family origins and unwanted sexual advances in the workplace, she’s put up a defensive barrier against emotional attachments with men—until she finds a guy who loves and supports her because of—not in spite of—who she is.

Bae Ta-Mi (played by Lim Soo-Jung) in Search:WWW. Another strong, independent woman. What especially endeared her to me was her mature and clear-headed attitude about her relationship with the much younger Mo-Gun (Jang Ki-Yong). Resisting the impulse to get carried away in the moment, she understands that her decision not to have children would likely drive her and Mo-Gun apart in the future, no matter how much he said it didn’t matter to him. As someone who once found herself in a similar situation and made what turned out to be an unfortunate choice, I admire Ta-Mi for holding fast to her convictions.

It’s hard for me not to love any character played by Jang Na-Ra. Two of my favorites are Oh Ssu-Ni in The Last Empress and Na Jung-Sun in VIP. At first glance, the sunny ingenue Ssu-Ni and Jung-Sun—a successful career woman burdened by past tragedy and a crumbling marriage—don’t seem to have a lot in common. What I see and love about them both is their emotional honesty and their refusal to compromise their values.

Special mention: Hui-Soo (Go Youn-Jung) in Moving. Superpowers aside, she’s a true friend to lonely misfit cinna-Bong-Seok, a devoted daughter, and comforter of the traumatized North Korean giant, Yong-Deuk. And she encourages Bong-Seok’s supermom to stop being so overprotective and allow her son (literally and figuratively) to fly.

OK, stupid question, but what drama is the pic at the top of this page from? I recognize Jianna Jun but can't place the show and for whatever dumb reason it's driving me nuts. (I would love it if DB would caption these screenshots in their drama chats to clarify which dramas they're from for those of us who don't already know). (Also, I'd love an Edit Comment button because I'm a spaz)

As for favorite heroines, there are a lot I've enjoyed but here are a few off the top of my head:

Park Min-Young -- Healer
Yoo In-Na -- Touch Your Heart

I'm mostly not so into candy type of heroines... Some are okay, especially if the drama itself is good and/or entertaining. But, my favorites are usually more quiet, even wall flower type or even more angry/bitter type.

Lee Go-eun - King of Dramas. This is probably candiest of my favs but she is just so earnest and funny, like a little puppy. Perfect foil to Anthony Kim. (Still a bit bitter about how the drama ended but oh well.)

Cha Hong-do - Heart to heart I found Hong-do to be pretty unusual heroine. She was so heavily traumatized and drama took her trauma and issues seriously. Often times just existing was hard for her and yet she managed to progress into moving around in public without a helmet.

Joo Da-hae - King of Ambition Okay, she is almost like a villain but... dear god this woman had a drive! She did bad things for sure and at the end she had to pay. But I still liked her ruthlessness. That she was allowed to be so ruthless and yet at the same time I felt also sympathy for her. (Though she did have to pay, it was unavoidable.)

Ko Moon-young - It's Okay Not To Be Okay Funny thing is that I liked this heroine so much because she was often unlikeable, unreasonable and even unpleasant. I like that for once we got a heroine who is not always sunny, nice and spunky. Moon-young was complex, difficult, selfish, mentally not-so-well, often even... well, abusive. But she was also vulnerable, (occasionally) kind, capable of changing and learning, fierce, protective, apologetic and funny.

Late to the party - here’s my list. They are all their own persons.

- Kim Sam-soon in MNIKSS (played by Kim Sun-ah), strong and independent through and through. Never to be put down and held her chin up.

- Lee Young-shin in Thank You (Gong Hyo-jin), a dirt poor country single mum with a HIV child. A seemingly meek woman with the iron will and resolve to bring up her girl in the most positive way while tendering a dimentia grand papa. I can rewatch this drama anytime when I want to - but I can’t treat When Camellia Blooms seriously as GHJ can’t better herself than this 2007 drama.

- Shin Mi-rae in City Hall (Kim Sun-Ah), from a woman of no ambition to fight her way as an elected mayor. One of my all-time favorites and KSA and Cha Seung-won’s sizzling chemistry is unbeatable.

- Kang Yoon-na in Yoon-na’s Street (Kim Ok-bin). Still a most unique female centric weekender. Totally found families of another kind. Yoon-na remains the same person as seen from the beginning.

- Oh Hae-young in Another Miss Oh (Seo Hyo-jin). I just love this woman and all her chaotic energy. The happy ending is well deserved.

- Han Yeo-jin in Forrest of Secret / Stranger 1 and 2. No non-sense with deeply ingrained ethics. I wish all civil servants serving me are like her.

We can see the efforts that each of these characters put into their own trajectory. More wonderful female characters please.
