tvN announces lineup for second half of 2024

It’s been a wild first half of 2024 on tvN, riding through a roller coaster of feels as we shook our fists at cheaters and cheered for revenge, wiping away ugly tears for the queen, and soon dissolving into a lovely fit of squees. But yay for us, we still have another half year to also look forward to and tvN gives us a sneak peek into the upcoming lineup in a new teaser announcement.

Title: Serendipity’s Embrace
Release date: July 22, 2024
Need to know: After stumbling their way through the first shies of love back in high school, fate gives a jaded Kim So-hyun and hopeful Chae Jong-hyeop another chance, when they meet each other again ten years later as adults. Launching next week in the Monday-Tuesday slot, the sweet coming-of-age romance also stars Yoon Ji-on and Dasom.

Title: Love Next Door
Release date: August 17, 2024
Need to know: Privy to each other’s most embarrassing moments as childhood friends, the rom-com follows Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min as they navigate the awkward journey into their blossoming love. Incidentally, the drama features Yoon Ji-on in a second, second lead role this summer, entering this story as a new neighbor romancing Kim Ji-eun.

Title: No Loss in Love
Release date: August 2024
Need to know: Bringing back another classic trope, Shin Mina and Kim Young-dae are united in contract matrimony, becoming our rom-com’s fake husband and wife. Also starring Lee Sang-yi and Han Ji-hyun, we’ll be diving deeper into the latter couple’s romance when they later take the spotlight in TVING’s spin-off series CEO Menu.

Title: Jung-nyun
Release date: October 2024
Need to know: Kim Tae-ri stars in the 1950s period piece, where our heroine’s growth and underdog story unfolds along with Shin Ye-eun, Ra Mi-ran, and Moon Sori. Set in the immediate aftermath of the Korean War, the historical and webtoon adaptation explores the era’s culture of an all-female performing troupe.

Title: Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin
Release date: TBD
Need to know: As our titular hero, revenge is on the forefront of Go Soo’s agenda as he wields his position’s authority, influencing the future fate of parole-aspiring inmates. Teaming up with police detective Kwon Yuri along the way, the crime series follows Go as he delivers his own brand of justice.

Title: Won-kyung
Release date: TBD
Need to know: The sageuk delves into the popular story of Joseon’s Lee Bang-won (later King Taejong), with Lee Hyun-wook taking the mantle. Also commanding the screen, Lee Sung-min plays the current King Taejo (a.k.a. Lee Seong-gye). But this time, our story’s focus will be on Lee Bang-won’s soon-to-be queen and title character played by Cha Joo-young.

Title: Meeting Love on a Log Bridge
Release date: TBD
Need to know: Finally gracing our screens in a romance, Joo Ji-hoon is not unlike a modern Romeo when he and Jung Yumi fall passionately in love during their younger years. But the two are sadly torn apart by their rivaling families and we fast forward to 18 years later when the rom-com reunites our separated pair.

In addition to the currently airing office series The Auditors, tvN’s full lineup for the remainder of 2024 can be viewed in the video below!

I am already anticipating Love Next Doo and No Loss in Love. Yet the one drama I am curious about is Won Kyung. I already watched 3 dramas featuring Lee Bang Won who I deem as one of the most complex characters in the history of Joseon. Between King of Tears, My Country and Six Flying Dragons, my favorite Lee Bang-won is Jang Hyuk though the other two dramas were more focused on his character. Hwaiting.

While I am curious about this version of Lee Bang Won, I am very glad that we will finally get some close insight into the lady behind him. I have always found Queen Min interesting so I am excited to see her character take the spotlight.

KING OF TEARS was an exceptional telling of this story- but with the focus on the king and told as a Shakespearean historical tragedy (like HAMLET as a example). For once the focus will be on Queen Min- which means that this tale will be from a completely different perspective. I am interested in this one.

All of the romcoms seem watchable so I am looking forward to them as well.

Yeah, this is a first. Queen Min was a secondary character in SFD and king of tears but this time she is the heroine of the story. Hence, the story we will be getting will be different than any of the dramas featuring Lee Bang Won.

👏💯👏 Oh my, only the cream of the crop in here!!!! I’m so looking forward to all of these romances.
✅ Joo Ji Hoon?!! (Though why is it labeled as rom-com…? I was hoping for a romance, no comedy, somehow. 😅)
✅ Jung Hae In?!!!
✅ Shin Mina!!
✅ Of course, Chae Jong Hyop.
Ah. This better be good.

NGL, the teaser image made me think of PACHINKO. I wouldn’t mind the second season for that, either (and I guess it was already announced as well).

For me, a romcom just means it will end happily, not necessarily be laugh out loud funny. Both are always welcome but I don’t assume! (This is also why I still haven’t gotten over Heartbeat.)

Back in the day k-romcoms used to turn full tearjerker/family melo in the second half, so genre rules were always a bit murky. I also hope it'll stay primary romance, preferably with HE (and very little serial killers waiting for victims on the titular bridge).

Beanie meta, I'm betting whoever picked the title Meeting Love on a Log Bridges saw the sentence on DB during Alchemy of Souls's first season. That's if you remember the first title this drama was given😁. Just a random guess.

2nd Meta that confirms my guess, the PD for this drama helmed AoS 1&2's camera.

OH MY GOD why have I never heard of the drama with Joo Jin-hoon and Jung Yu-mi?!? But is it romcom or melo although I don’t really mind either way?

This surely shoots to the top of my most anticipated drama.

I don't know how Jung Yumi does it. She is solid in every category: movies, dramas, and Jinny's Kitchen.

Overall impression, nice variety tvN.
No. 1. SERENDIPITY’S EMBRACE. Soft pass for me because I am more interested in Kim So-hyun’s upcoming S/S JTBC drama with ML Park Bo-gum: GOOD BOY (16 eps);
No. 2. MOM’S FRIEND’S SON. Jung Hae-in fan. I will be there if available on a US legal stream.
No. 4. JUNG-NYUN/JEONG NYEON. This 50’s period drama is finally seeing the light of day. I will be there……
No. 5. PAROLE EXAMINER LEE HAN-SHIN. Go Soo. My first Go Soo drama was OCN’s MISSING: THE OTHER SIDE (2020) (Viki US). I loved him in MISSING so I am ready to follow him into a heavy legal/mystery drama. I will be there…..
No. 6. WON-KYUNG/WON GYEONG. This is probably a pass for me. It seems to me this time in Joseon history was recently covered in the excellent KBS’s KING OF TEARS: LEE BANG WON (2021/22) (Viki US). In KOT Queen Won Gyeong was not neglected and Park Jin-hee gave a fine performance as Queen.

Park Jin-hee and Choi Myung-gil (twice) portrayed Queen Wongyeong excellently. I also enjoyed Gong Seung-yeon's performance in QSD. It was nice to see her character's background before marrying Yi Bang-won.
I'm not sure about this one. I didn't like the PD. "Hwajung" was a bore fest. The writer's only previous drama is "Money Game." I'm only interested in checking it out because of Lee Sung-min.

I see. You have to know when to ‘pull the ripcord’.

3

@marcusnyc20, bong-soo
Kim Yi Young is adept at writing sageuks, but the PD did not do a great job, and the casting did not help either. HAECHI was one of her best sageuks.

3

HWARANG’s PD was also one of the directors of MBC’s ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE (2012) (20 eps) (Viki US). I started ARANG in 2022 and pulled the ripcord after episode 12. I just couldn’t get into it and I am a fan of Lee Joon-gi.
As you probably know SBS’s HAECHI (2019) (Viki US) is one of my favorites.

3

Opps, Gong Seung-yeon in SFD.

@kiara, since I have wandered far a field, I might as well keep going. The Korean historical movie THE FACE READER (2013) was recently released subbed on Viki US. I have queued it up and just wondered if you have seen it?

Lol, sorry to put you on the spot.

Looking forward to them, particularly the first three sooo much, because Kdrama off late has been a wasteland for me...

Would appreciate if the post authors could also mention which streaming sites they'd be on for international viewers.

Kdrama availability (speaking as a US viewer) is always a crap shoot and I don’t think post authors have the ‘availability crystal ball’ yet however, speaking of the above,
No. 1 tvN’s SERENDIPITY’s EMBRACE (8 eps) will be available on Viki US with episode one airing next Monday, July 22.

MyDramaList (MDL) is my go to place to check for availability and currently according to MDL, SERENDIPITY’s EMBRACE is the only drama listing a streaming site. With MDL you have to do some creative searching because often times MDL has a different title than is listed here.

Love Next Door will be on Netflix US. I tried to provide edit to MDL, but they said I must provide a direct link to Netflix streaming (not a news report) which won't be available until a few days before it airs.

It is all very strange to me. In the July 28 News post there were o/t comments about Taecyeon’s upcoming 2025 Jdrama on Netflix: SOUL MATE.
On MDL there is already a link to Netflix. At Netflix US I copied this:
Check out “Soul Mate” on Netflix
https://www.netflix.com/us/title/81644425?s=i&trkid=258593161&vlang=en

Possibly SOUL MATE is a Netflix original while LOVE NEXT DOOR is being licensed by Netflix from tvN.

There are times in my life when I have time to focus on every new tidbit/link - but lately, that has not been the case. I HAVE tried to pull up Love Next Door on Netflix (on the "coming soon, "Jung So Min" etc) but no dice. I think you are correct - if it is Netflix sponsored/funded, info is available sooner.

I've posted this before, but I will actually be in Korea when Love Next Door is local (TvN) and I'm hoping I will be able to access tvN Sat/Sunday evenings at least a couple of times.

As @marcusnyc20 mentioned, it is unfortunately a toss-up. Sometimes the international platform is announced months in advance, sometimes it's the week of. And availability very much varies by region. 😢

'Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin' sounds like it might be just my thing, if only the writing is strong enough.

The only one of the romances whose description instantly snags my attention is 'No Loss in Love', because I'm do love a good contract marriage plot!

I am most interested in the last 4. The veteran actors will bring so much to their roles and I also like the stories.
Won Kyung - since this is a different POV from Lee Bang Won's story.
Meeting Love on a Log Bridge - Joo Ji Hoon and Jung Yumi. Need i say more?
Parole Examiner - I want to see Go Soo in another drama. Kwon Yuri eill be in it too.
Jung Nyun - I like all the actresses in it.

I'm excited for Jung-nyun because, hello, those women in one drama? And it's a period piece? Heck yeah.

Interested in Parole Examiner because I want to watch a Go Soo drama to completion and this might be the one I need to make it happen. This or Money Game.

Meeting Love on a Log Bridge because I love both leads.

Whether I'll actually end up watching any of them remains to be seen. But I'm definitely very interested.
