News bites: July 3, 2024

Yoon Kye-sang, Im Se-mi, Kim Yo-han

  • A new sports comedy about rugby is in the works on SBS, titled Try – We Become Miracles (roughly translated), with Yoon Kye-sang (The Kidnapping Day), Im Se-mi (The Whirlwind), and Kim Yo-han (School 2021) leading the lineup. Slated to broadcast in 2025, production has PD Jang Young-seok (Taxi Driver 2) at the helm with scripts by SBS’s writing contest winner Im Jin-ah. [SBS]

  • Namgoong Min (My Dearest) and Jeon Yeo-bin (A Time Called You) may have us reaching for more tissues, with both considering offers to star in tvN’s new melo series Our Film (working title) – playing a director and terminally ill actor, respectably. Directed by PD Lee Jung-heum (Inspector Koo, Nobody Knows) with Han Ga-eun and Kang Kyung-min co-writing, the team is aiming to start filming this September once the full cast has been finalized. • In the meantime, tvN has been busily preparing for Serendipity’s Embrace, where Kim So-hyun (My Lovely Liar) and Chae Jong-hyeop (Castaway Diva, Eye Love You) ponder giving love another chance in the latest poster and stills. Premiering this month on July 22, the rom-com and webtoon adaptation follows Player 2 – Master of Swindlers in the Monday-Tuesday slot. [Sports Donga (1), (2)]
  • Character posters have come out for Tarot, this time showcasing segments two, four, and six in the omnibus-style story, which stars Park Ha-sun (The Veil), Ham Eun-jung (Su-ji and Wu-ri), and Oh Yoo-jin (The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract) respectably. Written by Kyung Min-sun with PD Choi Byung-gil (High Class, Angry Mom) directing, the full series will be coming to our screens on LG’s U+ Mobile TV on July 15. [Maeil Kyungje, Newsen (1), (2)]

  • Netflix’s upcoming Sweet Home 3 released another poster and teaser combo, showcasing our returning hero Song Kang (My Demon) as he takes a stand against Lee Jin-wook (Welcome to Wedding Hell). Also starring Lee Shi-young (Grid), Go Min-shi (Jirisan), and Lee Do-hyun (Death’s Game) among others, the action-horror’s final battle and season will be launching on July 19. [MBC]

Been a fan since his debut in Flying Boys. There’s a personal sincere charm in him and his acting is getting better and better. It doesn’t hurt he has that appetite to try different genres and roles. His take in villain is just as good.

He has something that I can't define... an assurance... a placidity... gravitas... something very appealing, grounding, and charming.

Spot on and I can’t find another Korean actor embodying these. He is what I call a wholesome guy - a rarity.

1. I know nothing about rugby (or most sports for that matter), but sports shows are generally something I like.

2. This could be interesting, but also, watching this is like setting yourself up for guaranteed heartbreak, so I guess it'll depend on my state of mind.

5. What this Sweet Home trailer shows me is that this final season is going to absolutely break my heart, just like the other two seasons did. So, yeah, that'll be fun. Now, can my favorite characters not die, please?

No. 1. SBS’s TRY: WE BECOME MIRACLES. Dang. I swear that I read that Yoon KYUN-sang was going to be ML in this drama and I was excited to see him a sports drama. Oh well. I will still be there. Maybe I am still basking in the afterglow of ENA’s wonderful sports drama LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND (2023/24) (Netflix) and figure lighting can strike twice (this time for high school rugby) and the drama god’s won’t screw it up.

No. 3. tvN’s SERENDIPITY’S EMBRACE will probably be a pass however, there are two Park Bo-gum dramas coming down the pike one with Kim So-hyun which really looks interesting (cast, PD, writer etc) JTBC’s GOOD BOY:
