From friends to Love Next Door with Jung Hae-in, Jung So-min

A new teaser has come knocking in, graciously inviting us to tvN’s Love Next Door where Jung Hae-in (D.P. 2) and Jung So-min (Alchemy of Souls) begin their cute toe dance on that squiggly line between friendship and love.

In the opening sequence, we begin with the rundown on what makes our rom-com hero Choi Seung-hyo (Jung Hae-in) that “my friend’s kid” who you’re always (annoyingly) compared to by your parents — as is our accomplished heroine Bae Seok-ryu (Jung So-min). Although our leads are praised for successfully having it all – including good looks – as humans we all meet bumps in our life roads and the story brings Seok-ryu to one such point. Hoping to start anew, she’s now back at her parents’ place in her old neighborhood, crossing paths once again with who else but Seung-hyo.

Having grown up together, it’s not a surprise to read in the appearing text screen that the two are both witnesses to each other’s embarrassing past. In flashback, we then see a moment from their childhood when an adorably fierce Seok-ryu had called Seung-hyo, “my baby,” and threatened off his bullies. But some things haven’t changed over time and just as they ran away hand-in-hand as children, we cutely transition to the present day where our adult leads do the same.

As almost sibling-like friends, their squabbles are quick to turn into a wrestling match and Seung-hyo explains that, “[Seok-ryu] was the first nutcase I ever met in my life. When I’m with you, since we were young there hasn’t been a day that left my arms and legs unscathed.” But when romantic feelings start to spark – cue Seung-hyo’s swoony gaze – it’s a complicated situation for our once-comfortable leads. As the teaser then ends, we hear the question of what their relationship is and Seok-ryu replies, “He’s just my mom’s friend’s son.”

Directed by PD Yoo Je-won (Crash Course in Romance) with scripts penned by Shin Ha-eun (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha), tvN’s Love Next Door premieres on August 17 in the weekend slot.

I can't wait! I'm a little nervous with the writer, but I trust the actors of this show to bring more depth and nuance, something that Hometown Cha Cha Cha lacked.

@abalyn Right? Cha Cha Cha felt like a show that had all the right ingredients, but someone didn't mix them properly. It was so blah for me and I felt crazy since most people tout this show as being the best.

Hopefully it's better. I dropped it after five or six episodes and didn't really like any of the characters. This gives me a bit of Reply 1994 Yoon-Jae / Shi-Won vibes, which I loved.

My thoughts exactly. I dropped hometown because the writing annoyed me, but everything about this show so far, especially both leads who I adore, is really ticking all my cute romcom drama checklist items so I'm hoping this will be a better outing for the writer.

😂 I’m already laughing about the childrens’ scenes and the petty shoulder bump. I’m really hoping this will live up to expectations, since they are sky high at this point. 😅

And do I see a rooftop terrace… 🤩🥳

Jung So Min looks really pretty. If anything, I will check this out just for her.

Ah yes, another totally believable story of two hot people who knew each other very closely for decades but never thought of romance between them until...

P.S. Being mom's friend's perfect son seems like an exhausting job - that tired office worker style of JHI's character doesn't do him any favors.

It reminds me a lot of Fight for My Way ( I liked the couple less the issue with his job). So I hope it will be as much as fun. This kind of drama rests a lot on the actors and their chemistry. This trailer is pretty encouraging from this side!

It is so sad that we have to say this as too many times recently the trailer feels like it is for a different drama. The Auditors really did look like a comedy in the trailer…Miss Night and day looked like a rom com….and yes I am still not over the disappointment with Miss Night and Day not being a fun drama😬

Because of JSM, I have tracked this one from the very first announcement and it has always been identified as a Rom-Com. Although Night/Day is on my watchlist, sounds like I haven't missed anything so might as well drop now - I'm so far behind on the shows I began a few weeks ago.

This looks like a fun drama! Also been reading that there are no love triangle here. The four leads are all childhoods friends and second leads gonna form their own love line. Not often we get a friend group in drama with any love triangle so this is refreshing.

My favorite Jung Hae-in performance is: Netflix’s D.P. (2021).
My dream casting would be Jung Hae-in and Woo Do-hwan (Netflix’s BLOODHOUNDS (2023)) in a physical/action drama with both as allies not adversaries. No way I want those guys fighting against each other.

While waiting for the drama gods to answer my prayer I will be watching his upcoming tvN romantic drama LOVE NEXT DOOR/MOM’S FRIEND’S SON. The only JHI romantic drama I have seen is tvN’s A PIECE OF YOUR MIND (2020) (Viki US) (12 eps.). Notwithstanding the episodes cut APOYM was very enjoyable and JHI and Chae Soo-bin gave terrific performances. It is my favorite CSB drama.
(My alternate title for APOYM was: NOBLE IDIOCY: THE DRAMA. Those who watched I think will get it and I am not referring to JHI’s character Ha-won.)

It would be great if you signed up and got an account so you can join us in the comments sections. You would get the alerts and interaction with the beanies is much easier when your comments are not greyed out.

Hopefully this will be one of the dramas that will have a recap and lots of fun in the comments section like My sweet mobster and lovely runner.

Jung So Min has been looking so hot recently, she was always pretty and cute, but something has just been switched over to hot too and I love it. Love both the leads, hope I'm not building up too many expectations for the story itself.
