[Drama Chat] When you’re late to the party

It happens: you watch a drama months or years after it aired and you fall in love. You want to unpack the mind-blowing episode you just saw, but everyone has already moved on and the un-moderated internet is rife with spoilers.

As social animals (online), how do you deal with the lack of active discussion around your “current” binge? Does it affect your viewing experience at all?

When it happened to me with Heartless City, I was lucky enough to find a group of folks who were game to re-squee over the show and welcome stragglers to the Paksa party. It eventually led to some friendships outside of dramaland where we’d send postcards and check on each other.

Though I’ve seen other shows later than their airing date, Heartless City still has a special place in my heart. (I swear it’s not just Jung Kyung-ho’s guyliner!)

Tell us about a time when you watched a drama later than everyone else. Did you find it less enjoyable, or did something happen to make it memorable?

Sadly, I have to admit that I caught Hospital Playlist mucch later than I like. This is because I am familiar with heavy-laden and dramatic paced medical dramas. Initially, i brushed off Hospital Playlist as a mockery and joke to all the Korean medical dramas I've watched. But, one day, I decided to give it a go, and I have no regrets. It is one of the K-dramas that I always put on the repeat mode, whenever I am in a K-drama slump or in need of something to cheer me up after a long, tired and stressful day.

What is the community watch? Is this different from the recaps or hang out?

Yes, a community watch is held on a beanie’s fan wall. A group of beanies will choose a few dramas put together a timetable for the order of watching the various dramas and the schedule of how many episodes per week. Then once a week someone will host the discussion on their fan wall and tag in the beanies who have shown an interest. They usually have gifs/pictures of key scenes to add to the discussion.

Perfect explanation of course. May I add- There could be many different watches going on at one time. You could start your own by posting on your fan wall that you want to watch a drama and see if anyone else does.

It happened to me with Happiness. Out of all the dramas that I watched late, Happiness was the one I wanted to discuss the most and I was so past the boat that even online forum discussions were dead. However, thanks to a bunch of lovely beanies, that will be our next Community Watch after Just Between Lovers.

Meanwhile, I will be watching Secret Inspector Joy and tagging those who might be interested two weeks later. Similarly, next week, Claire @caire2009 will host a hang out post for Suspicious Partner if you want to join.

I would like to rewatch Happiness with you and the beanies but unluckily I am a scaredy cat and the zoombie part was hard on me to watch. Hilariously, I was watching opening one eye and closing the other one. Regardless, it was a good drama.

I’m a scaredy cat too but honestly Happiness is the least scary among the zoombie shows out there.

4

@claire2009 Yeah, it isn't the most scary show but the first few episodes were too scary for me. By the end of the show I got adjusted to it.

2

Haha!! It’s the only zombie show I’ve watched. I don’t do horror and I put it off for as long as I could. Of course now I wish I had not but hey better late than never.

1

Oh, I'd say "warm bodies" is much less scary, and the series of Zombieland stories are pretty fun, too. Then there's Zom 100, but that is societally both happy and really sad. Would recommend.
And I am someone who would never watch a real zombiemovie, I would never choose an action horror if it weren't above all funny.
I liked Daybreak, too. But was sad there was only one season.

I don’t think I would enjoy a drama as much without reading beanies’ comments and different takes. Before knowing of the existence of this community, I used to read other blogs for shows I enjoyed during my lone-watch.

I started watching drama live during the second half of 2021, with a few exceptions (TONT, Mr Queen, Vincenzo, Law School). So, for the dramas airing before that, I mostly binge watch them. But it is really sad having no one to share your thoughts with since people might be watching something else.
Some examples
Moon Lovers (I am with the few who liked the first 12 eps but I agree that both FL and ending needed some tweaks.)
Chicago Typewriter (such a hidden gem)
Defendant (Ji Sung is my favorite actor for a reason)

I have mentioned this multiple Dramabeans comments for the past week. I have just watched Hotelier, a 2001 drama, and was hooked despite a very simple plot in today's eyes. And finally understanding Bae Yong Jun's appeal back in the days.

As I'm also back in my k drama era, I have been catching on dramas that were aired in the past two/three years. Through the darkness is really great, the most realistic interrogation scenes I have seen, and Kim Nam Gil is just *chef's kiss*. Also watched his "Island", weak plot but oh my, his swoony eyes 😍😍😍.

I felt that I have watched Korean dramas that I wanted to watch from 2005 to 2018 and those that I didn't watch are dramas that I'm really not interested in. Was trying to find The Last Scandal of My Life and Sandglass but was unable to find one with decent quality. But I always welcome recommendations!

4

Classy and respectful! He was a true Hallyu original. I watched his last work, "The Legend," and wondered why he didn't do more sageuks. Mane of glory, voice, he looked good in armor, etc. I'll remember this drama fondly despite the misfortunes behind the scenes.

Sageuks, just like modern action, are very taxing physically. Perhaps he tried once and realized it's too much for him?

6

@gikata,
Well, you are right. He was injured while filming Legend and barely made the last scene.

6

iirc He actually got a really bad injury filming The Legend and that’s why he was basically half retired from show biz after filming that drama and then completely retired from show biz a few years after that

5

Yes totally agree! He can be gentle but at the same time, with his voice, he has a commanding presence too without having to shout or raise his voice. He's soft spoken but not soft. He's gentle but he's not a pushover.

This is such an apt description of him. I recently finished Hotelier and am now watching Winter Sonata.
All these years i was unimpressed by him and felt no push to watch his hits. But thanks to the beanie who recommended Hotelier, I see why he's such a big star. Even in Winter Sonata he's soft yet commanding such is such an uncommon quality.
Though for some reason, from his first scene in Sonata, he keeps reminding me of Cha Eun-woo 🫣 similar vibes or something...

I love, love Hotelier!

It is my favorite BYJ drama (although having only watched a handful of his works). The chemistry between him and SYA is instant and insane. The 2ML - originally the ML - doesn’t stand a chance when BYJ comes onto the scene. Increasingly, I find it hard to experience the same kind of romance thrill in recent dramas. I guess it’s hard to have another actor with the same kind of charisma as BYJ whose understated but top dog yet warm feel is hard to replicate. A unique brand in his and current era.

I still re-watch my favorite scenes from Hotelier - and the lift kiss remains to this day the hottest kiss in my book.

4

Omg yes!!! The chemistry is electric!!! 2ML is nice to everyone around him except to the FL, of course the FL is going to leave him, and when BYJ is around, can the choice be anymore obvious haha!

I only really started watching Korean dramas live in the beginning of this year, but I'm still constantly watching shows that have already aired as well, so this happens all the time.

Usually, like now with Hospital Playlist or Reply 1988, I just skim through the comments of the Dramabeans recap to see what people were thinking.

But aside from my ramblings on the weekly "what we're watching", I mostly end up keeping my thoughts to myself. Usually I just end up discussing things with myself. Is that weird? Maybe, but I do it anyway.

A time? It happens to me all the time 😅 I'm usually VERY late to the party.
I'm mainly a binge-watcher. My list of old shows to watch is huge. In these 2'5 years in Dramaland I have watched many more older shows than new dramas which were on air in that moment. I think my first live-watches were Bora Deborah and Secret Romantic Guesthouse (from March to May 2023) 🤔

When I was watching my favorite dramas (many of them now in my Top 10 list) they had already finished several years ago. But I used to read lots of comments on YouTube edits, and visit forums, and recaps on different web pages, and that's how by chance I found Dramabeans. When I finished watching The Best Hit I read all the recaps and comments here. And then I signed up because I wanted to give "likes" to many of those comments and be part of this community 😊

A group of UK based and those happy to do UK timezone beanies set up a Watch and Discuss K-drama club for this very reason. We choose which older drama we want to watch each month. We watch independently and then have a live Zoom discussion. It really did help to deal with the frustration of needing to share when watching good and bad dramas from back in the day.

Soundtrack #2. I struggled with watching it past the first few minutes but I later jumped in and I liked what I watched. But to the point of feeling like I missed something? Clearly no. I'm yet to watch the last two episodes and there's no ginger whatsoever to do so.

Most recently, it is The Crowned Clown and 100 Days My Prince for the ones I finished.

And, I really don't understand the conditions attached to this chats cause there are dramas I was unaware of but I watched way after it aired. And there are ones that I knew they were airing but I didn't watch until later. And there are the ones I knew aired but didn't watch till it became available in my region.

For the third category which I majorly fall into, Marriage Contract, Go Back Couple, Birthcare Centre, Hospital Playlist 1, Penthouse 1,, The Crowned Clown and 100 Days My Prince. For some of these, I had followed via the recaps either when it aired(HP 1) or I was just stumbled upon it(Marriage Contract and Go Back Couple). Still, the watching experience was as good as new.

There is something exhilarating and unforgettable about live watching. Regardless of the quality of the show, I still remember where I was, who I was with, who was subbing it, which blog was covering it, etc. To name a few, K-dramas like Giant, QSD, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, My Girl, etc. C-dramas: Nirvana In Fire and Scarlet Heart with Liu Shi, etc.
During those days, I learned a lot about the history of Korea and China. I genuinely believe that I wouldn't have enjoyed these shows as much if I had watched them alone.

Re “I LOATHE shipping wars”. Do they still exist?
In my time (2016- ) I have participated in only 2 massive shipping wars:
1. tVN’s A POEM A DAY (2018). Which guy will get the girl.
2. JTBC’s ITAEWON CLASS. (2020). Which girl will get the guy.
On 1. I was with Min-ho (Jang Dong-yoon).
On 2. I was with Soo-ah (Kwon Nara).
No. 1 was a ball.
No. 2 was a bit more vituperative (if you will).

Ofc they exist - what do you think all these reverse harem dramas are about?))) Like current LOST YOU FOREVER is basically JUST this and hardly anything else in terms of discussions, and I expect things get to even more out of hand when fan fave ML will inevitably (as per source material) lose the race in the most dramatic fashion possible. I don't even watch it, but such talk of the town is inescapable by this point, ugh.

My own latest one was OBY 2 years ago and while it was pretty clear since the start which ship was the endgame there, 2ML fans (and 1ML haters, heh) fought over the matter with quite a dedication. Not to mention how writer pretty much ruined the main romance by dragging love triangle for much longer than it made ANY sense whatsoever. That part of said live watch era I do not miss at all.

This happened with me with Misaeng, 100 Days My Prince and others. I deal with it with posting in the fanwall or talking about it on the weekly WWWW threads. I am lucky if there are others who discuss it with me. But it does not take away frm my enjoyment of the drama itself.
I agree that live watching is better since you can talk about it with other beanies. But lets be realistic, there is just too many dramas and so little time to watch/discuss it that there will always be that drama that will be left behind or set aside for later.

8

Required fields are marked *

Jillian, I agree. Setting them aside for later is fine. Something to look forward to. Binging has been my drug of choice for inhaling a drama from the first time I watched one. Waiting a week seems to dull all the sense, memory and emotions I get from the hit each episode delivers, so even though the live-watch beanies have often landed and already left the room, I still enjoy the thoughtful & often spirited discussion here at Dramabeans, especially the intelligent insights into character & plot twists, and many welcome clues to an unfolding mystery. I still toss in my two cents at the end if I have something to say, knowing that my take on a drama might just be the sound of one hand clapping in the silence when all the lights have gone out in the room; but still it's great to get my thoughts out. I have friends who often watch dramas I've recommended to them and find it wonderful to hear what they think, sometimes much later. Discussing a drama 'revs' my drama engines period...whether it's a live drama or an old classic.

I also like reading other Beanies thoughts on a drama I like. There are some things I miss out and other catch on and share their own insights which can make a great discussion. That is one of the big perks of live-watching. And dramabeans is a great place to share thoughts on a new drama and an old favorite. You can always find someone to share your thoughts and discuss it with another fan/s.

I think I have three scenarios:

1. My own private party: Some shows have this perfect timing and vibe that make them a special watch. And this special watch is "shows that I don't really need to discuss."
I was probably having a hard time so I binged the show and, luckily, I found great comfort in it. That means that I wasn't late for anything, I have no regrets for watching it later. They were there for me when I needed them and that's all I could ask from them.

2. Friendly attack: If I like something a lot, I get obsessed, when I get obsessed I start sharing that obsession with everyone. So if I find an old show that I like, I will probably annoy my mom or a friend by talking nonstop about it.
I actually have a designated friend to talk about these things (dramas, movies, webtoons, books, music, wtv) with.
But if the obsession is really big I'll just talk about it with everyone until they tell me to shut up.

In this scenario I'm usually kind of sad for being late to the party, and I feel like I need to catch up, and that's why I won't shut up. LOL

3. Internet dive: I go everywhere in the internet to see the reactions to it. I will dig every corner to know all the opinions about it. Especially with old underrated gems.

8

I've also done the deep internet dive for older shows that I loved. Even if the comments are a decade or more old, it's interesting to see how others reacted.

Oh, we seem to be watching-habit-twins 😂🫰 I also enjoy some shows “privately”, where I won’t even read recaps and/or comments (I find this is the majority of shows that I binge, actually).

Then, I luckily also have a k-drama-loving friend, who I will haunt with recommendations (she does the same, so it’s fair 😂), and we often end up watching the same shows at almost the same time. Our messaging threads tend to blow up then, and we’ll occasionally have a watch party. 💯 As a DB equivalent, I’ll also stalk the WWW thread and comment whenever I catch someone “late-watching” the same shows that I do 🤓, and sometimes use the fan wall to deepen the conversation.

For one show I did the internet deep dive, because I found it super captivating, and was sad that I was so late to the party: THE RED SLEEVE 😢❤️
My heart aches even now…

Hi, twin! ☺️😆🤍

Aww, but that's so cool! 🥺 My friend doesn't watch kdramas so I unilaterally attack her with info of shows she doesn't know or care about.
With my friend our recommendations are pretty much pointless. She recommends a manga, I recommend a webtoon, she recommends an anime, I recommend a kdrama, I tell her to give slice of life or Bollywood a try, and she defends Hollywood.
At the end we ignore the recs and end up watching horror movies together, or try to, because our watch parties consist in us talking about stupid stuff for hours and forgetting about the movie we were supposed to watch.
Btw, it's super cool you're in sync-watch with your friend. That's like, the dream.

In DB I usually go to the old recaps of the shows and/or post on the 🧱 🤣

I may be mistaken, but I think it's probably better that you got to enjoy TRS on your own. The live watch was kind of chaotic.

Ignoring recommendations became a unspoken rule. 😆

We talk a lot. To the point one day the greeting of the call ended up being "hi, today let's not talk. Do you have the episode ready? Play it! Fast!!!"
It was a tight schedule.

4

😂😂😂 That sounds like an awesome friendship and fun meetups - never mind if you’re gushing about exactly the same thing, as long as you understand the need to gush about such things in general! 🫰 And in the end, some shows you can share, so all is good 👏😉

Yes, I noticed TRS wasn’t even recapped on DB, so no episode specific discussions. And I think it was better as a binge anyways (considering the suspense)… But it was sad not to have a specific thread to talk about it, so I used my fan wall in the end. (I didn’t end up watching this at the same time as my friend either, sadly!)🫰🤓

This first happened to me with Boys Over Flowers because I didn’t—and still don’t— like to watch dramas that are suuuuuuuper hyped. This also happened for me with A Piece of Your Mind, Do You Like Brahms?, and then Extraordinary Attorney Woo but for the last one, it wasn’t necessarily hype that drove me away from live-watching/watching with everyone else, but it was more so because of the topic of choice— having the central story about a differently abled person— because I am the same (a differently abled person) and due to that, I am suuuuper sensitive when topics like these are made the centre of attention because it will go one of 2 ways for me: I will either cringe really hard because of how trope-rific (not the good kind) it is or I will be super annoyed and offended because of how poorly and insulting it is, but thankfully—and to my surprise— Extraordinary Attorney Woo was beautiful and very respectfully made, and it’s no wonder why Park Eun Bin isn’t the most enthusiastic if there is to be a Season 2, because I can understand the level of pressure it brings her to do it right and to do it justice 💜

I think all these dramas were so popular that if you post on the recaps or your fanwall you will still find people to chat with you. ❤️🫶🏻

Under the Queen’s umbrella was a recent one I knew I wanted to see, but couldn’t do it live. I loved it. I wished I saw it with someone else to be able to really unpack all the emotional beats that I was going through while watching it.

I’m a late comer to kdramas, so missed the Gong Yoo/Coffee Prince boat entirely. Still on my top 10 dramas, I can’t even describe how much I loved this show, but glad I was able to at least write about it a little thanks to the Dramabeans guest writer monthly themes that were popular a few years ago so that I could gush with people writing on my commenting page.

Having discovered kdramas only in 2023, I am late to the party for everything LOL Just a handful of the shows I've seen are recent.

I only intermittently subscribe to kdrama channels so I'm always catching up on shows, and even when I first started watching there was a decade or so of shows to discover. What really added to my enjoyment was finding recaps of a show here on dramabeans so I could read them after each episode and see everyone's reactions as if it was airing live. So even for old shows, don't add any spoilers!

I don't watch live, and I watch a lot of shows from the back catalogue—which means I almost always miss the boat on participating in the discussions here on Dramabeans. When available, I read the recaps after watching each episode. I find them really helpful in pointing out things I may not have picked up on, and I love reading what others had to say about the show. I admit it's frustrating at times when I feel like I have something to add to the conversation when the parade has long since passed by.

For a while, I was posting long-ish comments in the weekly "What We're Watching," but I seem to keep falling farther and farther behind. Most recently, I finished slogging through King 2 Hearts after having given up on it after about four episodes a few years ago. Based on the recaps and comments, it appears that I'm in the minority in not liking the show, so maybe it's better that I wasn't part of that conversation.

Thank you for this thread. I have only been watching kdramas for 2 years now. I was introduced to kdramas with it's ok not to be ok. My friend kept on talking about it for years and finally, in an act of boredom inspired by the pandemic, I watched it. The first couple episodes were thoughtful and enthralling.

But, it wasn't until I watched 25 21, that I was completely impressed by the thoughtfulness of the writing and the plot, which seemed to have fully realized secondary characters that sometimes acted as foils to the main protagonists, but had their own separate interesting character arcs. There were also main characters who were weak or flawed. Sometimes they developed and sometimes they didn't. The whole experience sold me on kdramas.

After watching 2 years, I must admit that the majority of dramas that I have watched rely heavily on troupes and don't take the time to develop characters that demonstrate insight into humanity. However, when I do watch a show like this, I feel the need to share my experience with others.

I also don't have a lot of thoughtful people in my life. After discovering this website, I decided that this might be a place to interact with some thoughtful people who also enjoy the company of thoughtful people though the mutual interest in kdramas.

The ones that have resonated deeply with me are: 25 21, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Move to Heaven, Uncontrollably Fond, the first season of Hello, my Twenties, and Doom at your Service. The only one I was able to watch concurrently was Extraordinary Attorney Woo. I have read a lot about the show during its run. And, it really amplified my enjoyment of the show. I really like to hear other's opinions on the show. And, it makes me feel connected with others as well.

I need to edit this post at some point. These are my current ramblings, because I feel like this post might die soon

I'm trying to watch My Ajusshi. I finished the first episode... so far it is not my taste. It feels like sad exploitation so far.

My Adjussi: it took me a month to get though the first 3 episodes. Episode 1 was boooring. Episode 2 was boooooring. Episode 3 was boring. I wondered what the hype was all about. I didn’t get why the reviews were so stellar. It finally starts to move at episode 4 and it turned into a powerful riveting gem for me. Patience and perseverance will be rewarded.

I am usually Always Late to the most loved / talked about / hated dramas. But even if i’m in sync, i’m more prone to observe/read other’s discussion. It’s still fun though so missing the live atmosphere is a bummer. I think it was Last year that i watched Blind - not a great drama but i commented on every single recap as a token of support for Taecyeon. Judging by the lack of comments per recap, i just felt weirdly determined to add something for the show, even if no one reads it. Oh the things that a fangirl does 😂

However charismatic Taec was in Heartbeat, Blind is his best role for me. He is so normal and natural.

I don’t think I’d rewatch Blind but i was so proud of Taec in this role, it felt like he really grew as an actor. I was like a beaming proud noona really 🤩
