The Midnight Studio: Episodes 8-9

It doesn’t always take ghostly encounters to realize that people aren’t always as they seem, but dealing with ghosts (not to mention being a ghost!) certainly makes it easier to discover other people’s well-kept secrets. Long-awaited answers about the past emerge this week, bringing joy to some and heartbreak to others. But one especially terrible secret is catching up to our photographer very quickly, leaving death and destruction in its wake.

EPISODE 8-9

The Midnight Studio: Episodes 8-9

Having successfully lured Ki-joo to the bridge by possessing Bom and threatening to throw her off, ghost-turned-evil-spirit Hoon proudly admits that he enjoyed being people’s one and only lifeline. Also, he didn’t just stalk his victim, Hyun-joo — he manipulated her boyfriend into thinking she was cheating so he’d break up with her.

Ki-joo inches closer until he’s able to knock Bom off-balance and pull her into his arms, activating the Safe Zone and expelling Hoon from her body. While Nam-gu fights Hoon off and tosses him back into the river, Ki-joo comforts Bom. She doesn’t remember anything that happened while she was possessed, and is immensely relieved to hear she didn’t hurt anyone.

Ki-joo’s only physical injury from the ordeal is a deep scratch on his elbow, but he’s far more concerned about Bom’s safety than anything else. Theoretically, throwing Hoon back into the river (the same thing that killed him originally) should destroy him, and the team helps Hyun-joo clear her name and return to a happier life. But Ki-joo isn’t taking any more chances. He accompanies Bom to work and holds her hand as they walk down the street to keep other ghosts away.

The Midnight Studio: Episodes 8-9

Then, since Ji-won is working late, he offers to stand guard outside her door all night. That quickly gets amended to him sitting beside her bed (because Safe Zone) until Bom realizes he’s feverish again — this time because Hoon never passed on through the Gate of the Dead like he was supposed to. So Bom lets Ki-joo rest his head on her shoulder, watching over him instead of the other way around. Unbeknownst to them, Hoon does ultimately emerge from the river, only to be absorbed by the evil spirit that has been working its way ever closer to Ki-joo and the Midnight Studio (and killing all the neighborhood cats in its path).

Traditionally, the Midnight Studio photographer takes his funeral photo 50 days prior to his 35th birthday. When the day arrives, Ki-joo asks Bom to take his photo, though he doesn’t tell her why. At his awkward attempts to pose, Bom joins him on the couch for practice. He stares in open admiration while she chatters obliviously, and then he confesses his feelings and leans in for a kiss. (Many more kisses later, they do eventually get the photo taken.)

Around the time Hoon’s case gets wrapped up, Nam-gu’s killer — the criminal who got away — is spotted again. Nam-gu joins the chase and helps his old partner catch and cuff the guy. Then he goes home to see his wife as the news breaks that his killer has finally been brought to justice. To his utter shock, he discovers that she had been planning to divorce him, seemingly because of an (at least emotional) affair with the local florist.

Enraged, Nam-gu makes a mess of the flower shop. He’s seconds away from killing the florist when Ki-joo arrives and calms him down. Ki-joo acknowledges the legitimacy of Nam-gu’s anger but warns that acting on it will turn him into an evil spirit, and advises Nam-gu to think carefully about what he really wants.

Also around this same time, Ji-won reveals (without knowing it’s a reveal) that she was in fact Sung-ho’s online girlfriend. She thinks he ghosted her on the night he, well, became a ghost, and the only way he can think to begin making it up to her is to follow her around like a good-luck fairy: holding the bus when she’s running late, delivering helpful files and insider tips to make her job easier, that sort of thing.

The Midnight Studio: Episodes 8-9

Now that Bom and Ki-joo are officially (if secretly) dating, he surprises her with a spontaneous camping trip. They leave Sung-ho in charge of the Midnight Studio and drive to the ocean… or, at least, that’s the plan. But this is Ki-joo’s first time behind the wheel, so a two-hour trip turns into five hours, and that’s just how long it took the car to run out of gas. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, they decide to make the best of it and pitch their tent under the stars.

Based on their conversation that night, Ki-joo finally puts the pieces of his life together: Bom was that 12-year-old ghost who disappeared! Following the accident that killed her parents, she was in a coma for two months — during which time her soul hung out at the Midnight Studio. The Safe Zone is the result of a protective salt circle he drew around the two of them. Now, Ki-joo holds Bom tightly and thanks her for saving him many times over. They agree that they must have been fated to meet each other at just the right time.

While Ki-joo and Bom are bickering over the right way to cook ramyun and sharing kisses in the rain, however, Sung-ho is left to deal with a direct attack from the cat-murdering evil spirit. It ransacks the outer studio, but fortunately it can’t breach the doors into the actual Midnight Studio, so Sung-ho is shaken but unhurt.

When Ki-joo returns from the camping trip, he’s unofficially interrogated by police officer LEE SEON-HO (Ahn Chang-hwan), the same officer he encountered at the police station before. Officer Lee can’t help noticing that Ki-joo keeps showing up conveniently at the center of weird cases (plus, to anyone who can’t see ghosts, the bridge incident where Hoon tried to kill Bom almost looks like Ki-joo tried to push her off), and he’s observed that Ki-joo’s operating hours are unconventional at best. He outright accuses Ki-joo of running a fake storefront, but with zero evidence of anything underhanded on Ki-joo’s part, he backs off for now.

The Midnight Studio: Episodes 8-9

That night, a new visitor named KIM YOON-CHUL (Park Doo-shik) arrives at the Midnight Studio. He was murdered immediately after being released from prison, and insists his murderer also framed him and got him imprisoned in the first place. But hang on — this is the guy from the case that got Bom fired several years ago. He wasn’t killed yesterday like he thinks he was; his spirit has been wandering the netherworld since 2019… and he met Ki-joo’s uncle there.

Meanwhile, Bom picks up Ki-joo’s photo. She starts to hang it in the studio, only for Sung-ho to inform her what it’s actually for. Devastated, she goes straight to Ki-joo for answers. Which, I’d rather her find out now than when it really gets down to the wire. But her finding out so soon after Ki-joo finally let down his guard and decided he wants to live a long life feels like an extra cruel blow. But these two seem to have a knack for getting themselves and each other out of difficult situations, so here’s hoping they can put their heads together and find a way to beat that curse once and for all!

I haven't watched that many kdramas this year but, for me, this is the cutest couple of 2024. Also, my guilty pleasure is the classic kdrama scene where the leads act lovey dovey and the poor customer facing person will assume they're married or dating. It's funny, it's cute and it can be so cringey. To me, it's cinema. I also like how these two were having a romantic camping trip while poor Deputy Go was fighting for his (after)life.

I cannot wait for the infidelity arc gets dealt with soon, I hate it. The moment Deputy Go joked about detective ghost's wife, I just knew the wife was gonna be unfaithful or wanting a divorce. I was hoping it's a misunderstanding or something more nuanced but alas. I feel so bad for detective ghost. Personally I would simply divorce someone if they weren't there for me, instead of cheating on them.

I must say, I am impressed with the pacing. The ML and FL already know most of each other's tragic backstories, their childhood first love connection, and now even that he's gonna die. Even Deputy Go knows who his first love is and Detective Ghost knows his wife's heart went yonder. What are we even gonna do for the next 7 episodes?

In retrospect, making your gf take your funeral photo is kinda messed up. What was this guy thinking? Again, not the best decisions and logic from a person who is otherwise very kind and considerate.

P.S. this ghost seeing ML met his fated love when they were preteens bc their parents died. we are reaching kdrama trope levels that shouldn't be possible 💀

P.P.S. While creepy stalker ghost will *not* be missed, I'll keep it real, I just cannot fear or hate the Big Bad Villain Ghost. No matter what Evil Face™️ he does, all I see is the comical eunuch from Mr. Queen.

🤓 and 💀

The epilogue for episode 9 (not the preview for 10) gave hints to me that the trope meringue will reach unknown heights. Samchon is machinating. And we know that our most recent visitor ghost knows our FL as Prosecutor Han and that she must have been involved in his case.

WE WILL RISE TO THE TROPE TIPPY-TOP-PINNACLE OF EVERY-DARN-THING BEING CONNECTED!!! 👻❤️

And I for one don't mind the trope-fest in this case. The whole drama has a dark fairy-tale vibe, which means that of course he's afflicted by a family curse, and of course everyone -- dead or alive -- is connected. Now what kind of ending will it give us? Disney-fied HEA or something with a tinge more tragedy?

I'm ready to see that bad Prosecutor-now-Minister GO DOWN. Question is: will he die and come back as an evil spirit and THEN they "kill" him (again)? Or will he just go to prison or something...

I'm pretty sure its the prosecutor/minister's ghostly Joseon ancestor who is killing the cats.

You write as if happy ever after is a bad thing! Are you possessed with an evil spirit or something?

Haha! I don’t think so … 😈
I’m actually hoping the show can pull off the double happy ending — the characters get a well-deserved HEA and we, the viewers, are happy about the way the writer got them to that point.

Nothing much makes sense in this drama but the main emotional beats are moving. Yoo Insoo is good here as I didn’t like his overacting in that awful drama which allegedly had a good mother in it. Sungho is a sweet and funny character and it is sad that he will have to pass through soon.
Bom and Kijoo are enjoying their bliss amidst the impending havoc but I hope the uncle can free himself from the netherworld and help them beat the curse. And, please let Kijoo get rid of that awful hair colour. What’s wrong with the gorgeous black?
And, the ghost cop should learn a whole books worth of lessons about what makes a relationship functional. His gendered assumptions about the long suffering wife needed to be exposed as he was oblivious to her unhappiness and lonliness.

I am so pleasantly surprised by Yoo In Soo. Never seen him in anything where he isn't ridiculously overacting. But he's really good here! And I really, really loved Eum Moon Seok in Good Job and The Fiery Priest, so am loving him here too. Here's hoping he doesn't go dark--though I think that's less likely after seeing episode 9. Not impossible, but...

Yoo Insoo is wonderful here for sure. I am hoping it is also because he is directed well and is vibing with and learning from the older actors. Overacting stifled his charm and turned me off massively in the woeful “Good bad mother”.

I was VERY HAPPY to see that neither Ju Won nor Kwon Na-ra had “No Kissing” clauses in their contracts 😙

All I’m doing at this point now is staring side-eyed at the writer about how our lead couple will end up.

Make it good, please. Leave “bittersweet” to the side ghosts.

Of concern was the emotional conversation between Samchon and Ki-joo when Samchon asked for his memorial photo. Didn’t he say that photographers were neither alive or dead?

I admit that I had to go back and check this!!! He does indeed say this--that the photographer lives only by the grace of the camera and is neither living nor dead.

Question for the community, then, would include: Do we assume that we know who the "photographers" are by their job? Or are "photographers" known by the scars left by the camera? Because if the latter--we have TWO photographers who might share a fate and also might be able--with the help of a certain samchon--to push back on their fate's fatedness 🤞

I refuse to go through another HEARTBEAT ending again. We have time to figure how these two can live happily ever after lol.
I am also shaky on the whole opening and closing of the door to the dead or afterlife.

I just loved Ki-joo and Bom in the first flush of their mutual attraction. I think someone mentioned this on the fanwall as well. But they hold hands, kiss, touch and more. It’s a much more normal depiction of physical desire between two adults even tho we’ve been told one has essentially been an ascetic. Rooting for them.

Gah. That makes me want to go rewatch. It was the light cheek kisses that really got me. Or was it the sneakily grabbing and caressing his hand while (poorly) hiding (for no reason) in a clothing rail? I'll have to go do some more research...

Looollll. If I do it, I'll have to at least hide them lightly because the delicate distinction you're drawing may not be so evident to all. 😂🤣

That said, your use of the phrase "I say" here totally worked on me. I laughed real hard at how it set just the right tone 😁

3

EXCEPT, they go on a camping trip, alone, and HE SLEEPS IN THE CAR?!? There is nothing normal or realistic about that! (That level of prudery after they showed the kissing actually annoyed me. Besides, why not have him wake up in the tent and notice she had awakened and was out walking. They really missed a sleeping together trope there! )

And wasn't she supposed to have been sleeping in the back of the SUV? I mean, what WAS that tent? It was more like a portable garage than a tent. Too fancy for this person (who, despite hating camping very, very much, is apparently a purist of the genre).

3

Yep! There are so many continuity holes in these kinds of KDs that we have to either just roll with them or not watch them.

2

Yup, they could have. But it’s another leap for most kdrama leads to have s*x on what I think is their first date. Baby steps. (Tho camping with just one tent was an odd choice then.)

No, their first date was 20 years ago and involved ghosts and a salt circle 😋

Not-so-seriously, though, your very polite censorship of the word "sex" here (which I'm not doing, clearly, as I'm a boor) reminds me to offer this technical PSA for our community:

Saying sex--or any of the terms, slang or otherwise, for that act--is allowable by the DB "Inappropriate Word" blocker, but please, for the love of god remember not to say "special1st" or "Sp0ngeBob."

Both verboten. And I don't want to know why.

Good to know! Tho I wasn’t thinking of the blocker. It was my Inner Korean I think. 😅

3

You're a kind and gentle soul. That's all. There's a time and a place for everything...apparently including in the middle of the woods in the back of an SUV??

2

Well, we all know what Sp0ngeBob really signifies.

I'm not going to say anymore, because I don't want you thinking that my mind is perpetually in the gutter. Its just in the gutter sometimes, when I think about camping.

2

I think because Spongbob has long been into kink and that spelling is for those in the know!

2

Now that you mention it... my comment was supposed to say, "did they do the Devil's Tango on their camping trip while Deputy Go was fighting for his life?" but I didn't know how PG comments here are supposed to be!

I mean, two adults who've newly entered a relationship, all alone, and the scene cuts away when they kiss... I wasn't expecting them to be so chaste.

I have two issues with the drama. #1 the romance It might be only me but I wanted the leads to stay partners or friends. Not sold on the romance. Similar example Sell Your Haunted House
#2 The story about the evil ghost killing catsvand wreaking havoc and the ghost from last week, the stalker, not vanishing
Show stealer for me is deputy Go and Fl's best friend. I like the ghost detective too.

Yes, a shout-out for @mistyisles for such a cogent recap of a story that can, as @dncingemma noted be a little meandering and nonsensical at times.

Also, a double shout-out to our recapper for reminding me/us about the hilarious-but-also-not-but-also-yes-hilarious joke about our 2FL, Ji-won, having been literally ghosted by Sung-ho.

I liked the reveal about Bom being the past ghost. But I was surprised he didn't ask more questions about the accident. Her scar is unique and she had to meet his uncle because she had the camera.

The couple is cute. I hope the curse of dying at 35years old won't ruin it.

I wonder if the uncle is in coma somewhere. It would be nice he wasn't dead. He could chase ghost in this state.

1

Oh! Yay! That would be really cool!! Although 20 years is a bit of a stretch no. On the other hand why not, after all the Uncanny Counters were comatose too.

1

I'm sticking with this one, but 7 more episodes might begin to be a slog. The breaking point for me, when I began to feel some dangerous resentment, that risked turning me into an evil critic stuck on this earth forever came when the Joseon villainous ghost sucked the smoky energy from the stalker villainous ghost. This is the 10th (or so) show that I've seen that, and let me tell you, I've grown more and more skeptical about this process. Why are evil spirits always sucking up the breath of humans and other ghosts? Is it just entrenched in Korean ghostly lore that when an evil spirit wants to take a soul, s/he just starts breathing in and out it comes in a stream of smoke from the victim? But what if there is a breeze--wouldn't the soul-smoke get dispersed? Surely there are ghosts that have more efficient ways of absorbing evil energy--say, through a wrist grab or tight hug! Could we for once see some creativity in portraying evil energy acquisition?

I was a bit confused how I was supposed to feel because obviously Hoon was a bad guy yet he *did* bring legal help to those who needed/accepted it. I get that it was out of some weird "this is happening because of me/I'm helping them" mindset but still.

It was lucky that Ki Joon went on that date out of town at that exact time.

Thanks @mistyisles for the recap. Because of episode 6’s postponement I feel the story has been thrown off a little. So all things being equal we should have had episodes 9 and 10 this week. That would have wrapped up the stalker case and had 2 episodes with the Kim Yoon-chul case. I guess it doesn’t really matter.
One thing I found strange was Ki-joo in the office while the two attorneys were having a consultation with a client. If I was the client I would have asked, “hey who is the guy back there”. He was visible right? We will be seeing more of Bom’s nemesis (now) Minister Lee Hyun-oh.

The thing with Hoon, the hero, and the poor girls being harassed by journalists... couldn't the other people who had interacted with Hoon be witnesses that he is not what he appears to be? Bom gave her Sunbae a list of people that Hoon wanted to get legal help for, and Sunbae said that all those people were creeped out by Hoon. So I guess they could have talked and defended poor Hyun-joo.
Also, kudos to all of you who understood that the little girl was a coma ghost!

I really loved the romance in these eps, and I hope they don't break up next episode like it kinda seems they might. Previews can be misleading. I liked the twist about the cop ghost's wife. I thought he might turn out to go rogue and be the bad guy in the end, but I guess not.

So Bom was a coma ghost, but did they ever explain the Jang Soo name? Still not quite understanding that.

Thank you for the recap.

I liked how Ki-joo expelled the ghost from Bom - this type of push and pull I can get behind. I'm glad Ki-joo has finally succumbed to the charms of uri FL.

Yay for photo studio flirtation.

Nay for "why" the photo was taken.

Yah for secret handholds.

Nay for neither consulting the GPS not letting Bom drive. To be fair she took it rather sportingly.

Yay for unironically saying 라면먹고 갈래? And actually knowing how to cook ramen - timed to perfection.

Nay for continued Queen of Tears references - secret divorce papers, grilled lettuce and ... timed fate!?

So now that the mysteries of
- who was the kid ghost
- where is samchon
are solved perhaps we will get more backstory about the camera and how to break its curse and see the back of the Grim Reaper.

I really like how Ki-joo supports both Go Dae Ri and Nam Goo. Ji-won being unnerved by her lucky day and anticipating a tragic end is so relatable.

We know Park Ki Woong has only a guest role but can we please have a Gaksital reunion sometime soon.
