Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (April 6, 2024)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Unlock the Boss: I need a serious palate cleanser after The Impossible Heir, and I actually forgot I was still in the middle of watching this one. Sorry, little show! It’s actually quite cute, and watching Chae Jong-hyeop and Seo Eun-soo team up is so much fun. I’m having a little trouble with the suspension of disbelief still, but the drama has enough heart that I can enjoy it while not fully buying it. Kim Sung-ho is almost a blast here. I’m almost halfway through, so I’m desperately waiting for looking forward to the loveline picking up, too.

Queen of Tears: Manifesting more Hongs-out-of-water shenanigans and less villain screentime for this weekend’s episodes. Unless the villain is Da-hye coming back to unbreak Soo-cheol’s heart and teach him how to ride a bike and let him tuck their baby to sleep.

Parasyte – The Grey: I didn’t know the source material. I just started this with zero expectations except for the fact that I love creature features and Gu Kyo-hwan so it’s no surprise that I find the duo’s (or is it trio?) partnership adorable. Whoever thought of contrasting Gu Kyo-hwan’s dramatic reaction to everything with Heidi’s “what is emotion blrrp blrrp I’m a parasite” face deserves a raise.

DaebakGrits

Queen of Tears: I’m so ready for some in-law hijinks while Hyun-woo plots to take down the bad guys. Although, to be honest, I was kind of happy to see Hae-in’s family get scammed. Most of them deserved it, so I’m happy to see them all humbled.

Wedding Impossible: The Kim Bum cameo was probably my favorite part of the finale. Otherwise, I was kind of indifferent, but at least everyone got their happy ending — after an eye rolling breakup and time skip.

Impossible Heir : Bean of Disappointment.

Wedding Impossible : That Noble idiocy was so unnecessary. A mutual separation would have been so much better.

Chicken Nugget . Was a fun show!!

Shop for Killers :
Did not appreciate the ending. It just felt forced.l for season 2. And Bale is still alive?!

Ongoing

Queen of tears I warmed up to the show a lot. Hong family is so dumb. Looking forward to some village hijinks. Soo cheol May be dumb but I feel he will make an excellent village lad and will actually be good in a farm. I can totally see him bond with the village ahjushis. But he is going to miss his family so bad.

Nothing uncovered
The show picked up! I am quite invested in the murder mystery and investigation.

Hide : I don’t trust the husband. Definitely not telling the whole truth. Lee Bo Young is so awesome there.

Shogun : upto Ep 5. This show is amazing. The ‘gardener’ scene was so well done.

Mask Been on my list for so long and finally started last time. Oh my. Is this some melo makjang? JJH is such a baby and his acting is so different. Glad he evolved to what he is now. I have only watched 2 episodes so no spoilers please.

Guess Who am I (cdrama) :
Time pass watch. Somewhere in Ep 4.

I generally like here what you wrote, Blue. I am glad I was not the only one who was pretty disappointed at Impossible Heir. Such wasted potential. Wedding Impossible was decent but in the end forgettable. Chicken Nuggets made me laugh so much (cha eun-woo!! howled!). Really enjoying Queen of Tears and glad they shifted to the family.
Mask was good for one viewing, but I appreciated it.
Shogun I am waiting...will be great.
Hide, Nothing Uncovered and Parasyte worth it??

Hide had a great start but I am not sure anymore. NU had a lacklustre start but I seem to prefer the murder mystery in it and I think it’s worth checking out if you like murder mystery.
Parasyte, haven’t had time to continue. But reviews seems fairly positive.

In Hide, the lack of reaction of the FL concerning her husband is really weird. She was a prosecutor, didn't she loose her morals? The "I will do anything for my family" is not a trope that I like, it's used to justify bad things.

In NU, I like the investigation too!

Shop for Killers: Honestly if samchon can survive what appears to be literally anything (Must be his super diet of ammunition for breakfast), then yes, I want Bale to still be alive too. That man did not develop his super clichéd villain personality to get barely 20 minutes of evil screen time.

Impossible Heir: Have a Bean of Endurance for finishing this one.

Chicken Nugget Not saying that I am looking for yellow pants and pink shirt myself, but I might be. I tried to promote this K-drama at my local gym. Needless to say, I got some looks when I mentioned the part with the girl that turns into a chicken nugget.

Shogun Someone at the gym mentioned it in response to my overexcited rendition of a talking chicken nugget. So, it's on my to-watch list!

Hide Also on the to-watch list.

Queen of tears Will end up on the to-watch list at a much much later point (because I can't get my head around characters who are completely unable to communicate but apparently still manage to run a business as if communication and leadership were two completely independent skill sets). Also, so far, it looks like crying, some more crying, crying, crying, flashback of other people's death, externalised crying, internalised crying, coming to terms with own mortality, divorce, getting lost, crying, crying, crying, victim of betrayal, fainting, crying, plotting, some more crying... I don't even have the emotional ability to engage with even 1% of that hyper Melo narrative.

Parasyte on the to-watch list.

Nothing uncovered On the to-watch list.

Totally love your Chicken Nugget comment! And I get where you are coming from on Queen of Tears (but still highly recommend as it is very well done and surprisingly funny).
Someone once wrote that if the characters of Seinfeld had cell phones 90% of their plots would go out the window.
If Kdramas had the ability to communicate directly between characters we would be having 2 episode shows....

"If Kdramas had the ability to communicate directly between characters we would be having 2 episode shows...."
Or plots that are so boring that you have to fill the other 10 episodes with non-stop close-ups of the beautiful leads.

That's exactly my take also on this subject.

COMPLETED
Wedding Impossible - I definitely fell out of love with this over the last two weeks. And then we got noble idiocy. And a time skip 🙄. I'll just be content with literally everyone getting a happy ending. Anyway, Kim Bum 🥰.

The Impossible Heir - There are worse shows than this one. But the gap between expectation and reality was just too high for me.

ONGOING
Queen of Tears - Cried as usual 😭. Loved the Schitt's Creek of it all by the end. I'm almost scared of saying good things about the show because I like it so much and I don't want to jinx it.

The Midnight Studio - Interesting reversal with the evil ghost played by Choi Tae-joon (when will he get a proper role and not just cameos). We seem to be rushing through the plot with the love confession. Not sure what we have in store with 16 episodes.

WATCHLIST
My ongoing k-drama list is looking a bit bare-bones now. Maybe I should start Hide 🤔. Or should I just wait for the badly-named Lovely Runner starting on Monday?

C-DRAMAS
Completed The Legend of Shen Li. The entire arc starting with Xing Zhi finding Shen Li was just so beautiful. Stayed good to the end with a full-fledged ending covering even the book extras - a rare sight in c-drama world nowadays.

Also completed In Blossom. I think they introduced the Big Bad too late and then gave him too much power just for the dramatic last minute reversal. But overall, I still liked the show. It was ultimately quite light and frothy fare for a murder mystery suspense drama.

Looking forward to Best Choice Ever next week. The trailer suggests it'll be loads of fun.

I'm glad Legend of Shen Li stayed good to the end! I didn't read the book, but it sounds like it's a proper adaptation and not some production company taking advantage of the popularity of a work and then twisting the story to their whims.

I'm on episode 31 and will binge-finish it tomorrow.

'The Legend of Shen Li' is going to be up there with C-fantasy classics for me. Have been off C-drama's awhile...came back and chose 'Amidst A Snowstorm of Love' but am stalled at episode 13. Quite a mesmerizing slow-dance-romance but you have to go through the minutiae of actual in-the moment real life pauses in conversation to get to the next step in their slow waltz to love. It's like listening next door to a real couple's everyday romance over a year (lots of meals together) except the northern location does add beauty, and the pool games seem to have way more action than the actual plot. However, must say that Leo Wu and Zhao Jin Mai are amazing in this. Leo Wu in 'emote-mode' melts snow ---his physicality is sooo up close and personal in this one. But then this gets offset by a lot of long train-rides back and forth and their never ending language of love: texting. Real conversation is so elusive with her though, so decided to quit because 17 more episodes of slow-mo plot is too much. BUT THEN all this to say that Zhao Li Ying and Lin Geng Xin have won me back to C-dramas in 'The Legend of Shen Li'. These two do 'yin-yang' so well in relationship--one fiery, the other solid grounding and nurturing. Actor Lin Geng Xin's low key 'God' character Zen-ned his way into my heart early on. And fierce Demon Lord Shen-Li's powerfully feminine physical dominance on screen is shedding sparks everywhere, except it seems, in our God's walled-up heart at this point. Am on episode 17 and still chomping at the bit and having fun watching them fight villainous monsters. Loving this on Viki and my next C-drama will be this couple's first pairing in 'Princess Agents" (2017) which is a 9.2 rating compared to Shen-Li's 9.6. Excited.

You're right. The 'yin-yang' relationship in Legend of Shen Li is definitely one of its greatest strengths. Both strong characters but with leeway to give room to the other.

I did finish Amidst a Snowstorm but it's definitely slow and agree it's not everyone's cup of tea though the leads did a good job!

My wife binge-watched THE LEGEND OF SHENLI until the final two episodes where she was forced to wait for the subtitles. She found that it stayed good all the way through all 39 episodes. It is definitely one of the classics.

PRINCESS AGENTS is a watchable show but not quite at the same level.

The Midnight Studio: I really appreciate the stories they have been telling and the variety of ghosts. I see our big bad ghost is coming though. I like how the romance is progressing, our leads are really cute. I actually think it is good she is pushing his boundaries a little bit, I don’t think she has crossed the line though. She likes him and wants him to enjoy life.

Nothing Uncovered/Hide: I realized I didn’t care about either of these dramas and so stopped watching.

The Impossible Heir: I fully forgot about this drama on Wednesday, I was only reminded because I saw the drama hangout about it. So, I still have no idea what the point of Hye Won was. She added nothing and did nothing for the drama. The writing was bad on this drama, very very bad. I don’t know why or when In Ha changed, nothing was explained. Why did Tae Ha want to be where he was, I don’t know. His father came out of prison, leading to the death of his mother, and then went back to prison. WHY? What was the point? Everyone in this drama is awful. Everyone. Awful, awful drama. Also, the Impossible Heir wasn’t Impossible. I’m a little annoyed, but it is my fault, I watched this until the end.

Queen of Tears: I cannot wait to cry, laugh, and scream in the next episodes.

Live Watches
The Midnight Studio: I’m bummed our episodes are now out of sync - we weren’t supposed to have to wait a whole week for our college grad to get his diploma and acceptance, and we’re not really supposed to have to wait to see what happens with Bom’s possession! But I am glad our leads now have a definite reason to stick close (40cm or less!) to each other. Now if Ki-joo will just come clean about his “sabbatical” we’ll really be getting somewhere.

Queen of Tears: All the doubts I had about what kind of person Hyun-woo is have been washed away. Not only were his inlaws’ attempts to dig up unsavory things about him completely unsuccessful, but he absolutely rose to the occasion when the villains’ trap closed. Glad to see him find his footing and be assured of himself after so long. So excited to see this whole Schitt’s Creek situation play out!

Older Dramas
Our Blooming Youth: The polo match was just as good the second time around! I love all the lessons about trust in this drama. Hwan wanted to believe Jae-i so badly, acted on his impulsive doubts, and regretted it so quickly. She always manages to say exactly what he needs to hear exactly when he needs to hear it, and she’s the only one who can serve up that sass to him.

The Kidnapping Day: (up to episode 8) Slooooowly making my way through this rewatch with my partner and really loving it again. He says he loves our leads together, is very much in favor of our intrepid detective, and finds the lawyer as adorable as I do. BUT he could take or leave the mystery plot and he finds the whole experimentation history somewhat uninteresting. I see where he’s coming from but I think I liked the whole history better in light of the ending, so we’ll see what he thinks after four more episodes.

Finished
Wedding Impossible: 🤵‍♂️🚫👰‍♀️ Excuse me as this is slightly rant-y. UGH, Do-han annoyed me to no end. Everything he did was just to make himself feel better, including the press conference he gave only after the people he supposedly cared about the most had thrown themselves under the bus for him. ARGH. When Haraboji said, "that's you making a selfish decision again and using those two as an excuse," I said MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY. And then in the last episode, he had the NERVE to tell Ah-jeong not to feel guilty?? Did you somehow forget how you tried to guilt-trip and manipulate her into protecting you for half the series??? 😤 But Ah-jeong's family (and Ah-jeong) soothed my rancor. I originally thought Moon Sang-min would be just a pretty face, but he brought a nice cuteness and "boy in love" believability to Ji-han. I loved his proposal! I loved all their interactions, actually - they were really "2000s American Rom-Com" vibes, and I loved it. I definitely bought his chemistry with Jeon Jong-seo. She, of course, elevated a standard FL role and made it so much more rich and complex as an actress who just wanted the role of a lifetime and leapt before looking. So much of the writing took very standard scenes and did them better with the dialogue, particularly when the ML, FL, and her family had conversations. This wasn't an epic romance, but it didn't need to be. All in all, I didn't get very attached to anyone, but I had fun!

Watching
Rainless Love in a Godless Land: Only a few episodes to go. I dread finishing this because it's been such a beautiful journey, and I'm not ready to reach the destination.

Blood of Youth: the fights are fun and the adventure is fun. Right now, the plots are plotting in setup, so it's a pretty relaxing adventure.

Apartment 404: it took me nearly a week to finish ep 6, but now I'm caught up to watch ep 7! I also really liked the pun that revealed the culprit in ep 6. And also Lee Jeong-ha being adorable. The editing isn't snappy or exciting, but that just makes it a comfort watch.

Not much time to watch dramas, as the main thing that keeps me engaged is Elinor’s Real Life, a chaotic spectacle of family fireworks, office blow-ups, and petty sniping. Only dogged determination and a thick skull skin allow our burdened-but-unbowed FL to triumph over minor sports injuries and malfunctioning supermarket self-checkout stands. Ratings are deservedly low. On the *fictional* drama side -

Current/recent:
Midnight Studio: I’m a few episodes behind. So far it’s predictable but still enjoyable because of Joo Won, and the supporting cast is engaging enough to make the obvious, manipulative tear-jerking palatable. Side note: I am SO TIRED of lead characters who stand stock-still (or worse yet, SIT DOWN) as a ToD bears down on them, overcome by their grief, stress, and raging idiocy. I wish next time one of them would just get hit and die and the drama would end in the second episode and I’d get 14 hours of my life back. Seriously, if you miss your dead granny/uncle/golden retriever that much, just keep standing there and you’ll meet them very soon.

Wedding Impossible: Less than the sum of its parts, in the end, even though a lot of the parts were pretty darned good. More feisty FLs like this one, please - or maybe just more Jeon Jong-seo. Can’t writers ever figure out a way to stuff the crappier tropes into the front half of a show and let loose with the imaginative stuff in the second round?

The Impossible Heir: I’ve given in to my appetite for outrageously messy dramas with pretty people doing inexplicable things. This show fed that brilliantly and I enjoyed it all, in all the wrong ways. This isn’t just any train wreck, my friends. It’s a cosmic train wreck that has run off the trestle bridge and is suspended gravity-free as plot points and characters slowly drift away, tantalizingly out of reach like a spacewalking astronaut’s lost toolbox, eventually breaking down into a mass of floating junk and might-have-beens.

Older shows:
Come and Hug Me (2018): The show where everyone constantly says “sorry” except the people who should be sorry. Jin Ki-joo and Jang Ki-yong with a strong cast are all doing some of their best work, especially Heo Joon-ho as an uber-creepy killer and Seo Jung-yeon as Best Mom Ever, and there’s even a fleeting glimpse of baby Chae Jong-hyeop in his first role. It does suffer from the endemic kdrama maladies of using repeated self-endangering behavior from female characters to advance the plot, and of completely, preposterously ignoring conflicts of interest when police and prosecutors are investigating cases in which they’re personally involved. I’m on episode 28/32, hoping it doesn’t crash too hard.

A couple of little side notes to MBC’s COME AND HUG ME (2018) (Viki US) which was a favorite mine:
1. 2018 was a great year for cherry blossoms in South Korea. The director incorporated cherry blossoms spectacularly in CAHM. Also another 2018 drama tvN’s A POEM A DAY used cherry blossoms beautifully;
2. (TEASER not spoiler). Director Choi Joon-bae includes one of the most emotional and gutsy final scenes I have seen in a kdrama. I went back to Viki and watched the final 4-5 minutes of episode 32 (final) to see if my memory was correct and I am pleased to report that my memory didn’t fail me. It was a perfect ending. Just great.

(Now I am hoping that Jang Ki-yong’s upcoming JTBC drama ALTHOUGH I AM NOT A HERO will be available on a legal US stream.)

Queen of Tears - Poor Soo-cheol. However his actions sometimes, I know he's not the kind of guy to deserve what his wife dished to him. Him searching around for them on a bicycle multiplied it. I can't ride a bike myself so I wouldn't even think of searching for someone whilst wobbling on one. But he did.

I don't feel too sorry for Grandpa. Not after hitting my favorite Beom-ja. He had it coming his way. I wonder how he built Queens Groups with such precision in his A-days and went senile with age. I don't like the fact that they are easily swayed - from Grandpa to son to grandson. Well... grandson was always a cause for worry so I can't exactly count him in.

I do hope we are greeted with some warm and fresh colors now that the setting has moved from Seoul to the countryside.
I'm up for the rude awakening the Hongs will have to face for the next few days or weeks.

Nothing Uncovered - I don't know what they are trying to do with Seo and the detective... they better focus on the romance they shared in the past and nothing more. It is off that they played a romantic score when they interacted. Is the music director for this drama on a break or what exactly.

The murder drama is the part that interests me more. And the vibes are maintained week in week out.
I guess it's villain Han Chae-ah this time. I wasn't expecting that but I'm sure she'll deliver excellently.
I don't get the drill with husband Seol. He doesn't strike me as a killer...but he sure does have some crazy skeleton in his cupboard that makes him being a killer the lesser of two evils. Like whatever happened to Na-ri. I initially thought Na-ri was Eun-sae with a new identity. I'm still confused about Moeun and how it weaves into the story. But it seems we will be having a cold and closed case being investigated alongside this.

Detective guy and Daddy Seol's main guy are actually buddies...now that's a twist.

The ex-prosecutor...I'm sure he's in the middle of everything. But I didn't expect that he'll also have an influence at Seo's workplace. Her boss for crying out loud. Her FIL has her boss boss, her main enemy has her boss under his grip. That workplace isn't it at all.

I do agree with Detective guy that Seo lady used him to get to his friend. But I'll delay from nailing anyone until the full story comes out.

I'm all for the investigations - both police and reporters.

I did too. I was a bit pissed when Seo refused to share notes with Detective guy. I know it brought about some conflict but definitely not the right time or situation to not communicate.

I did enjoy both of them tracking each other. And they being aware that they are being tracked or have been here or there. I'd like to have such an intelligence at my disposal.

Wedding Impossible (Series review) - Mood progression: D / D / D / D- / D- / D-
When I first heard about this show, I was feeling really hyped up about a fresh story where the protagonist was a beard and the LGBT character wasn’t for once in a love triangle. I couldn’t have been more wrong: the show utilised Princess Diana as a background leading to an overload of contrived drama tropes. Furthermore, I personally found the LGBT representation a tad distasteful when a LGBT person not coming out became an obstacle to the OTP’s romance. And while it isn’t fair to talk about online discourse in relation to the show, I wonder if the writer ever thought about how insidious this representation is.

Hide (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D+
The show may already be digging in the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the writing with the classic take down a mini villain in order to reveal a bigger one development, but I’m not gonna lie, it was thrilling seeing the FL work that court scene and impress Jin Woo, who is most likely going to be her one true ally in this corporate conspiracy crap. Speaking of which, I don’t think Lee Chung Ah picked a role with much substance given the preview but I would like to be proved wrong. Actually no, I must be proved wrong because I’m already turning my brain off watching the ML try and gaslight the FL hard.

The Midnight Studio (Episode 6-7) - Mood: D+
This was the week where the show kind of lost me because I don’t think a romance was ever crucial to the central narrative and the plot fumbled by focusing on the cliche ‘jealousy then damsel’ combination that a writer employs to develop an OTP inorganically. The show tells us clearly that the FL is a special ‘living soul’ but doesn’t explain because yes, we’re dragging. On another note, it’s kind of funny that Choi Tae Joon cameo-ed yet again as another devil beneath the surface: a warmup before returning to film another full length series? His wife did after all just finish hers and maybe it’s his turn now?

Queen of Tears (Episode 7-8) - Mood: D
Was there anything original in what was supposedly the mini climax of this show? The answer is no and then some: literally, I watched DNA testing, poisoning, terminal illness, amnesia, child abduction, corporate takeover, secret baby and I guess a history in the past where one moment makes the 2ML obsess over the FL (so creative, right?), not necessarily in that order. But not all hope is lost because I do think next week will be funny with FL’s family struggling to live in ML’s village, well, until hell breaks once more with the battle to take back Queens. I would be shocked if the writer actually writes something good.

HIDE (Ep. 3-4) Episode 3 pushes the pace faster on Husband’s alleged suicide. Na is relentless and fearless in her investigation. The detective appears to be competent. Her friend prosecutor is still suspect even after the DNA test. I still do not trust the husband’s spin of the events. Episode 4 has the action and ending reaction that confirmed much of my initial theories from the first weekend episodes.

SHOGUN (Episode 7) Blood is not thicker than ambition as Toranga’s half brother double crosses him by taking the regent’s lordship and most of his lands as his bargain with Osaka castle. Toranga surprises everyone with his “surrender” but that may have just been a clever ploy to surprise his opponent. Blackthorne spent the hour pacing about waiting for something to happen (just like the viewers). However, his brash son, eager for war, tries again to strike at the council’s envoy but ends up with a dishonorable demise.

CRIME SCENE 2 (Ep 1) Crime scene shows had been a growing segment of the variety landscape until big budget escape/challenge shows bulldozed onto the scene. This show has all the hosts play a role in the actual murder story then try to find clues to vote on the killer. It does get a little confusing and counterproductive as they are acting roles and accusing each other of the crime. But way before the end, I knew who did it.

Toranaga is calculating and cunning. I bet he saw this coming a mile away. He doesn't trust anyone, so he keeps his plans to himself, even from his second-in-command, Hiromatsu.
Naga's father's success story as a warlord at the age of 12 seemed to have cast a shadow on him, making him feel inadequate.

Wedding Impossible - finished
I understood the necessity of the pause and a bit of the Nobel Idiocy of the boys - everything needed to calm down and both boys wanted to give Ahjung back what she loved, her acting career. However, I missed some important talks among the trio and later I wanted more sparks between the leads (and more friendship scenes between Ahjung and Chaewon!! Pendulum was good though. 😁). On the other hand, we got Dohan looking really happy and doing what he wanted... and I was surprised how much I loved the story of Evil Noona. (And... ehm... is it strange that I think she and Kim Bum would make a better couple? 😅 )

Queen of Tears
I should have trusted the writer more and spare my worries about the misuse of the signed divorce paper. The divorce self was surprisingly straightforward and superfast and served to two purposes - (1) Hyunwoo and Haein finally being more open and viewing things from the standing point of each other (2) having a funny cameo with smexy Vincenzo handling the case (my daughter even came to ask me what made me laugh so much 😄). Though... I admit I was a tiny bit disappointed that the investigation of Hyunwoo by Haein only wasn't a secret ploy between them.

When ending of episode 8 was approaching, I realized that THIS was the climax the writer had been building up to all the time - NOT the take over by the Evil Squad, no no, but the ARRIVAL of the Queens chaebols to the countryside. And I can't wait for all the hijinks (and characters' arcs) to start. 🍿😎

Queen of Tears: 8.0

Wedding Impossible: 6.5 The wedding!? WTF!? It's starting to look like an actual wedding for Ah-jung is kinda impossible. Chae-won was the luckiest and sanest of the major characters -- next time just make a show about her being bemused by everyone else's messed-up antics. Meanwhile...
... Someone should have a talk with Korean car manufacturers -- ya know, about all those fatal car fires and that self-destruct timer that initiates when their cars roll over. Did somebody misinterpret the part of the specs that said cars should have reliable ignition?
And how will kdramas depict fatal battery fires after they run out of gas-powered vehicles?

Midnight Photo Studio: 6.5

Parasyte: The Grey: 8.5 (complete -- I survived a Friday Night of Doom!)
- I like the graphics in the opening credits.
- I kinda even liked their message.
- If you are wondering if it's safe to skip the closing credits, there are no Easter Eggs.
- Jeon So-nee has redeemed herself from Our Blooming Youth. Asianwiki thinks there will be a Netflix show with her and Park Bo-young!
- When I read "The Grey" I keep thinking Gandalf.
- When I see the monster tentacles I wonder if they are saving money by re-using Duty After School & Gyeongseong Creature work? Or are tentacles on monsters just the new Big Thing now?
- Then the educated part of my brain kicks in and I want to rage-quit because huge tentacles sprouting out of a head are such a flagrant violation of conservation of mass, even before you get to the problems with weight/momentum/BALANCE swinging those tentacles around while standing on just human-style feet.
- Zombies and vampires are more believable, or at least much less in violation of basic physics. Even Godzilla is less impossible, which brings us to...

The Last Stand of IJN Takao - Guns vs Godzilla: 9.5

Your rant about car fires in kdramas made me LOL. It would be a great and on-the-nose PPL bit if a character tried to manufacture a deadly car accident that rolls off the ravine and then it failed and then someone goes, "oh because it's X brand and has these features." I'm sort of reminded of a real life incident where a father drove himself and his family off a cliff to commit murder-suicide, and they all survived because of luck and it helped that the weight of the car's battery prevented the car from flipping on the way down

The flag carried by the ships of the 'Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force' is exactly the same as that flown by Admiral Togo when he defeated the Russians at the Battle of the Tsushima Strait one hundred and twenty years ago. The Midnight Studio I don't really know why but this drama doesn't work for me. I'm not invested in the character's stories. I wished the cop finds his killer, but he never talks, so I kinda forget about him. The other ghost is torturing poor people trying to earn money instead their villain boss. The FL is too pushy.

Wedding Impossible I think it's the kind of drama when the journey is more important than the destination. I don't regret to watch it, it was quite fun. The reveal made the story becoming flat but I still liked the characters till the end. It's sad they couldn't balance the love they felt for each other with the moments they actually spent together...

Nothing Uncovered The investigation is interesting and there are enough twists to not be predictable. I like the love triangle in this one.

Hide Can we divorce from a dead man? Because the FL totally should!

Wonderful World The 3 characters don't communicate and the villain can do whatever he wants. What's the point to tell him his mother's death wasn't accident if she didn't give him more details. So he went to the person responsible to say he wants to investigate it...

I'm surprised how Beanies were happy when a veteran actresses got a drama but at the end, it doesn't seem a lot of Beanies are watching Nothing Uncovered, Hide or WW.

Queen of Tears This drama is full of twists! I love the couple!

The Impossible Heir I like Lee Jae-Wook but I realized that I liked him in second roles but since he's a ML, I never liked his drama. I hope the next one will be good!

Couldn't watch anything the last two days because i am on a trip, but tonight i will binge again (i will regret not sleeping more LOL). I've got a nice hotel room, might has well chill there later and watch TV.

Currently watching:

The Guest (on episode 8) 10/10
ATLA (on episode 17) 8.5/10
Apothecary Diaries (on episode 19) 9.5/10
Somebody (on episode 3) 8/10
Hide (on episode 2) 8/10
Nothing Uncovered (on episode 1) 8/10

and a lot more that is currently paused.

I already wrote it here yesterday, but the Guest is REALLY good. Why didn't i watch it sooner? I don't usually go for fantasy-horror, even though the one's i've seen are great. I know it's agreed upon that this show is scary, but honestly i think it's kinda tame for horror, but then again i am not a good way to measure how scary something is. Fantsay Horror has never really phased me, if anything it tends to either gross me out or make me uncomfortable at most, meanwhile anything with SA will make me skip scenes or make me cover my face. I guess it's because one is more likely than another? I can calm myself with thinking that a fantasy monster could never kill me, but catcalling and other crimes lile stalking are very possible. Some of my friends have sadly experienced this already, i hope i never do.

Avenue with her eternal bloody vendetta against xianxia as a genre in general and all hit shows like that in particular (except a very few starring her own faves ofc) has long passed the stage of being amusing and reached the "girl, just let it go already". But oh well, those clicks from like-minded haters won't earn themselves, right?

P.S. Joins the mourning circle for IN BLOSSOM. Why, just why?!

I enjoy Avenue X's videos and perspectives, but I skip or only listen to the first few sentences for any of hers that talk about xianxia since she's always too harsh on them, except for LBFAD. We've all got our preferred genres and genres that we don't want to watch.

It seems like Legend of Shen Li isn't her type of drama and she was bored and disinterested from the start, so I don't even count it as a review.

I used to watch her, mainly for period costume commentary, but gosh, did she get - ugh, I hate using the word, but it's the only appropriate one here - toxic lately with the focus shifting from "how well this drama is made" to "how many dirty laundry/rumors from Douban and Weibo I can share about the drama and its cast/crew to get more views". She absolutely lost me last year with her raging hate against TTEOTM and LYX in particular - you'd think he personally spit in her morning coffee or something to get the girl this agitated. Plus she's super hypocritical about it - first bashing people for spreading "harmful narratives", then doing that and more (*whispers* bodyshaming AND baseless nepotism/shady behavior on set accusations) herself *rolls eyes* Like seriously, if she doesn't like certain genres and celebs THIS MUCH, how about just staying away from them? Her seemingly liking my other fave leaves a rather sour taste in my mouth, honestly, because I totally can see her turning against him for clicks as well.

Being new to C-dramas, I was looking to Avenue X for guidance, but I really didn't understand her adoration of Love Between Fairy and Devil, and her dislike of Till the End of the Moon. To me, although I enjoyed them both, the latter was a superior show.

4

@annegray I heard - can't vouch whether it's true or not - that she was already a fan of FL and also became a huge fan of ML thanks to that very show, so perhaps this was the main difference. What's certain is that she has no warm feelings whatsoever for either of TTEOTM leads. And when she sees celebs she dislikes in a successful show, she rarely takes it gracefully. That's why sane people don't stick to fandom sns for too long on a daily basis...

3

Teasing Master Takagi-san (3/10) - Netflix and Japan made this for me. The most adorable, cutest lil drama ever, the perfect way to relax and unwind after after work. 🥹🥹

The Midnight Studio (7/16) - watching it, loving it.

My Undead Yokai Girlfriend (1/8) - yeah, it’s fun, but it relies too much on the “pathetic loser ML” trope. Let’s see if I continue with this.

Living no Matsunaga (11/12) - God, why are they making me side with the 30yo trying to date an 18yo? Ugh. Look, it’s a cute romcom if you ignore everything about the premise and characters. At least I’ll be finishing it soon.

Paripi Koumei (7/10) - banger as always. I’m very, very slowly making progress on my backlog of past dramas.

Shogun (7/10) - still enjoying it, but it is a bit slow imo. Would like to see some action but that might just be me, ik people are enjoying the character study, the psychological tension and political maneuvering. My military history nerd self just wants to see the Battle of Sekigahara already.

Impossible Heir : Probably the worst written drama I’ve ever finished. It probably means that it wasn’t the worst show out there because I didn’t finish a lot of shows, or something gone wrong with me.

Midnight Photo Studio : Kwon Na Ra and Jo Woon looks good together. Though I don’t see anything special with the stories but almost every week they brought me to tears. It’s good.

QOT : I might missed this because I ff a lot of times, but why would they go to BHW’s home in minibus? Wasn’t the villains only took over their shares? Given their wealth, they must still have their private assets. They are not supposed to go broke overnight, right? And the grandpa, how can someone who build and maintain an empire so guillible? I understand they might not trust BHW, but due dilligence isn’t subjective opinion but basic common sense.

Sand Flowers (finale): "Don't feel rushed. Some flowers bloom later". 💚💚💚

Queen of Tears: This show feels like a love letter for kdrama fans. 🥺💚 I don't even think it's my nostalgia-obsessed brain talking. This show really feels old (in a refreshing way).

Anyway, I'm ready for the Couple or Trouble/Smile You energy! Chaebols need to go to live with their in laws more often in kdramaland.

Wonderful World (EP4): I thought this was going to be like Human Disqualification, but instead it feels like Trolley.
Just not as fun.

Beauty and Mr Romantic : It's weird that the ML is supposed to be 34, but the character acts like he's still 19, while the actor looks 20 years older -because he is-. My brain just can't process it. I'm not watching Poor Things, am I?

Also, what's the obsession of this show with age gab? If the message is "it isn't a big deal", they're failing. Extremely. They're even making me hate gaps between ages I didn't care before. 😂

...Is that their real plan? 🤔

Love Is like a Cat (EP2, dropped): ?

Wedding Impossible:
Don't know how to make the leads meet? Do Han. What excuse to make them spend time together? Do Han? Don't know how to develop the characters or romance? Do. Han. Don't know how to break them up? DO HAN. Don't know how to get them back together? Time skip! Oh, wait, but only after Do Han comes back to Korea and gives them permission... So... Do Han? The end.

Okay, but then AT LEAST make the friendship at the level of Roomie Gumiho or She Was Pretty, and the bromance at the level Tale of the 9T, TW or IOTNBO. That way the show wouldn't have felt so groundless and the conflicts so random when they added Do Han as an excuse to move the story along.

I don't get why this turned out so weak and empty. They didn't even have serial killers stealing screentime!

Jazz for Two (EP2, dropped): the writer of this show and I were enemies in our past life. 😆 I just can't with their projects.

BONUS

—My Siblings Romance: why is this so freaking funny?
—EXchange: The angst, the romance, the comedy, the DRAMA!
—Solo Leveling: this was fun, but they kinda took the "solo" part too seriously? 😂 I hate it when the main character is fighting for his life in the other eight characters just stand there and watch. And why make the "healer" level B just to make her "too weak" to heal anything later?

As far as the age gap stuff on BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC I agree that it seems a bit overdone. There is an age gap between the ML and the FL but it is not an unacceptable one.

2
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't have a problem with most of the gaps in the show (including the main characters), but the show is trying to make a big deal out of it, and that only makes it weirder.

Killing grandpa because a 30-something/40yo woman said she didn't "like" him and that he's too "old" for her? What was the point of that? I didn't like their relationship, but it was only because grandpa was too good for her.

And why is the ML acting like Do Ra is still the 12yo girl he knew for like 2 months, 15 years ago? She grew up but he acts the same and thinks he can treat her like she's still 12? because she's younger than him?

They insist too much on the age gaps. So even if I want to ignore them, I can't. Now even the ML's sister has an "age gap" with her friends. They need to chill.

1
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

You make some very good points here BUT perhaps there is a point being made by the writer with these age gap issues: Korea still retains most of its fixation with age differences. Even a difference of a year may render one's relationship into "Sunbae" and "Hoobae". "Sunbae" gets automatic deference (but also pays the bar tab).

As far as our poor Grandpa and our gold-digging mom- that served two purposes in our story: First it previews our greedy mom's inability to curb her tongue. But more important it builds into the story a major conflict between our FL and our ML's family who will believe that her mom literally killed Grandpa.

3
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's true. But the show already has two younger women that seduced someone's haraboji for money.
One is blamed for "killing" the haraboji's wife, and the other one is blamed for killing the haraboji himself. They're both gold diggers and just terrible people in general.

And there's also the fact that, automatically, the harabojis are viewed as victims. Even when one of them was dating a barely-legal girl, that his wife treated like a daughter and was his own daughter in law's friend.
But what do we have now? Just a really annoying woman that seems to be there just to make some drama for the happy family.

I think all of this worked to stablish the plot, but I don't think the message of the show is clear. If they wanted to present and normalize different family dynamics and type of relationships, wouldn't they have made those characters a little less unlikable? At least neutral?

I just want the story to to move on from some that a little bit to see the real intention of the show.
(I haven't watch today's episode yet).

2

I thought that the writer was very careful about the fact that our nasty Mistress had in fact been the young victim of that particular Haraboji's lust. She is in fact quite bitter about how her life was ruined by that old man. The rest of the family may think that she seduced him, etc. but the truth is clear to me that said Haraboji was definitely not a victim and the idea that their affair killed his wife by stressing her out is simply a malicious fantasy. She probably was not blameless either but the real truth is that she indeed was simply too young even if she was 'barely legal' and the greater responsibility falls to the older man who should have known better. This does not justify her, nor make her a nice person but it does make her less than a one dimensional monster.

1

But I feel like that conclusion came from us, and not the drama itself.

In the show they barely talk about the haraboji, and the entire family puts the blame on her. Even her mom treated her like she was the "villain".
They don't put the responsibility of this situation on haraboji directly, the same way they do with her.

No one in the show seems to understand her perspective, and there are no flashbacks to make her story feel more raw.

All her focus is on getting "things" from the family she ruined, because she "deserves" it because of her past relationship with that man, but there isn't a real talk about that relationship and what it implies.

And that's why the show feels kinda ambiguous to me (EP4 so far), and I hope it gets more clear about their message in the future.

Completed and loved. So many reasons to love it. Let's one day talk about Covid on this site, though. It was a thing. That global pandemic affected us all, including our dramas and our responses to them.

My Secret, Terrius
I started it on a whim because of last week's WWW. I love it. I hate the FL, as always in 90% of all dramas, and so, while true, this is not a deterrent. I love the ML, and also whatever part Kang Ki-young is playing, and also all the other laydeeez. Love them. Also, it surprisingly hard to watch for something so good. Way to go 2018 K-dramas!! So Ji-sub is gonna be in something dramatic this year and I'm not anxiously lying in wait. No, I'm not 梁. I don't want to see that show. But sigh. Also, a propos of nothing, why wasn't this show entitled Terrius at my Back in English? That's clearly the absolutely correct translation.

While reading the past commentary for SYHH, this context kept coming to mind.

One thing that I noticed was that in Royal Secret Agent (the one starring L, airing Dec 2020) had a lot of outdoor in the open countryside scenes, which I found refreshing for a sageuk. Usually, it's indoor scenes, home courtyard scenes, and crowded markets.

4

Interesting, so you see a difference in the comments? I honestly don't remember that anymore (I watched when the show aired), I just remember I really loved the drama.

3

@dorotka There were a lot of things different about how SYHH was covered and commented-upon from the way things are treated now, I feel. Some of that will simply have to with the fact that this is "the past" we're talking about, but I suspect that some of it was more specifically because of the mental and physical impacts of the differentially-applied global lockdowns, and I would like one day (somewhat selfishly, as I'm simply personally interested) to talk and hear more about Drambeans and dramalife in that context.

I also know I'm more-or-less alone in bringing this up every few months--so it's probably just my own hobby-horse--but I'm seeing so many downstream effects of what we had to do to survive during lockdown in my workplace that I have it on my mind a lot.

2

I'm like @dorotka, I don't really remember. But it will be interesting to see how Covid impacted our perception of Kdramas with four years of hindsight now.

2

Dark Hole incorporated face masks into the story. My absolute favorite pandemic watch.

Oh Elinor, the burn! I have only seen her in Kokdu and Woori, but those dramas didn't do anyone involved any favors. However, if THAT was the reverse harem on tap (tho I would shake it up with some of the MLs),* I would...[thinks of detestable task]... *not* offer to cook for my in-laws and watch instead.

I was considering BMR because third time trying a weekender might be the charm, but it runs long and I'm super time crunched already and may be on drama hiatus for a month-plus soon. But I also sincerely hope I regret my decision (for the benefit of those watching).

Yes! She was great in those (loved those two dramas) and also the old weekender ‘Five enough’.

I will check out the weekender once there are more episodes!

I’m afraid I was neither impressed by Kokodu nor Woori. Not that I disliked her in particular over any other elements of those two dramas. If she stars in a better drama, I’d watch it.

BMR would be even more tempting if we get weecaps. Whistles. 😉 The last weekender’s recaps were hopping! And folk are liking this one more so far.

All that aside, I’m really here to cast all my favorite MLs in a rom-com. ☺️

I had very good experiences with the FL in Terrius and Naked Fireman! Maybe my appreciate of her has even increased over the years upon rewatch. She brought me joy as a viewer and made me happy to see her on the screen.

Thank you. An allergic reaction is quite understandable- and you can always enjoy the show later. One of my favorite Weekenders is the wonderful SMILE YOU- which I did not get to see until several years after it was broadcast.

So much happened in QUEEN OF TEARS! Grandpa Hong got nicely played by his mistress which should not be surprising since it is Lee Mi-sook. Now the family has to rely on Soo-hyun which will make it hard for Ji-won to nurse a grudge and obsess about punishing Soo-hyun. He has to find another reason for her to want to stay alive. It was a wonderful sight to see the Hongs file out of the van with very sheepish expressions.

The end in IMPOSSIBLE WEDDING was just boring, not bad - maybe something to be content with nowadays. WONDERFUL WORLD in contrast seems to be going the way it should. Seon-hyul is now aware of his father's behaviour and has made the very painful realisation that his revenge was misplaced. He still cannot forgive Soo-hyun, rightly so, because she still has not said sorry, but I think she will get there in the end. Her husband is saying sorry all the time, I wish he would stop and avoid doing things he has to apologize for.

Jang Seung-Jo as shady writer husband in NOTHING UNCOVERED is growing on me as is the drama altogether. I like seeing adults behaving as such and not like teens.

MIDNIGHT STUDIO is plotting on alright.

Getting a spring cold right when it gets REALLY hot outside is such a me thing lmao... So forgive me for a bit incoherent rant, by brain is a little fuzzy thanks to meds rn. Speaking shortly, I didn't watch much dramas this week and weren't strongly into them either... Waiting for something grabbing to come, wonder what it'll be.

IN BLOSSOM: *deep sad sigh* Of course my worst fears about cutie SML's tragic fate had to become real in the most painful way possible – guess “don't ever have sex if you wanna live” horror movie rule applies here too. Problem isn't even the fact itself – tho I take a GREAT offense at his untimely horrible demise – but that it was so easily avoided AND script had to severely weaken/dumb down the character to off him this way. Like I understand – he's a mob boss of all things, his body count had long exceeded just impressive and became legendary, oh, and he's also son of one of the villains... Censorship surely ain't approving any of that, he's got to be "punished".

But! First, it was never a fate he initially wished upon himself – dude was planning to take a state exam and be an official before certain events strayed him from that righteous path. Second, his gang disbanded midway and as unofficial teammate of the leads he could've easily just go back to his original career plan. Or doing something else decent with his life. But nah, revenge for the daddy idiot, take two ftw! Not to mention that he's even achieved a rare feat of successfully graduating from FL's hopeless suitors fish tank and getting himself a much more fitting lady that was literally ride or die for him... And yet, writers had to go for sudden bloody drama – probably to show how high the stakes are or something. So the boy gets tortured to death by baddies, leads get some crucial info from his uncalled for sacrifice, SFL is utterly heartbroken and alone again, but yay, it's a happy ending with villains punished and OTP (only people who matter) together! Sorta. Maybe. Throwing a hint of the mastermind behind the mastermind at the last second was really bold move, show. Keep it, pls, as much as I liked you before you've become a parody of yourself – I don't need sequel, nor do I think it will ever actually happen. Yet another entry in my “good start, disappointing ending” and “fave charas graveyard” drama lists.

FIERY CHICKEN AND DIVINE TROLL THE LEGEND OF SHEN LI: Look, xianxia with a proper elaborate happy ending that doesn't make you wish to strangle writers! Yeah, I'm at loss here too, this happens SO rarely! Thanks to spoilers that it doesn't suddenly get crappy and open/sad/both out of nowhere in the last episode I went back to the show with an easy mind, phew. As of 8 or 9 episodes in I don't love it madly, but it's enjoyable enough and mostly harmless. Good stuff after another fresh heartbreak...

Let's talk about pros and cons then since I don't really feel like gushing smittenly here. OTP are good – they look great together, their personalities are fun and dynamics between the two are even more fun, what's not to love here? Well, I have a one WEIRD complaint (which I already mentioned before) – too much chemistry right away. Since the Day1 they give each other HARDCORE bedroom eyes 24/7 and in any other show I would never mind that, but here it just doesn't make sense with the plot. Like OK, FL is a literal fiery spirit with a temper that's bold and hotblooded in everything, so for her to fall madly for him very fast and barely holding back is acceptable. But for ML? With what we know (from spoilers mostly, but still!) about his background and duty? I just CAN'T believe this “he's GRADUALLY falling for her against his better judgment AND without even knowing that it happens before it's too late” when the dude looks like he wants to jump her right then and there in their every single interaction. It's too intense too soon, constantly taking me out of the story. Idk who is overdoing it – actors? PD? All 3? but what a peculiar experience for me as a viewer to want LESS heat from the couple for once!

Another downside is that it's a 200% OTP show – everyone else range from background noise to a nuisance, once the focus shifts away from leads story free-falls into abyss. Heard there's a cool demon lady in the later episodes, hopefully she'll deliver. SML is especially annoying – yet another senselessly aggressive entitled dude who doesn't know his place and keeps acting like a jelly hubby even after getting rejected flatly. He's also SPOILER, so even less sympathy points from me, ending with a whole lot of zero. Compared to his loudly bitchy attitude FL's arranged fiancée is just a tiny clown – not big annoyance per se, but I still fully support FL's violent rejection of this union, he literally could offer her nothing neither as a man nor as an ally. What's the point then?

Good aspects are that the drama is very pretty (aside of INTENSE blurry beauty filter), OST is nice, directing is fine... And online discussion about it is fire – I've never heard before of ML trending for his dead fish kisses lol, let alone of PD to be like “hold my beer, I'm expecting your apologies after next episode!” and then deliver a quite racy bed scene to shut all the critics. Peak comedy, better than plot itself! Did PD do the same magic in TPOB as well? Wonder if we'll ever know *pouts*

“Drama news” segment – not much again this week:

- it's TTEOTM first anniversary! Which c-ent celebrated by, frankly, baseless so far rumors about its leads collaborating for the 3rd time, leading to usual cdrama bloody fandom war. I'm personally conflicted about it – they make a fantastic OTP no matter the genre, but all that online drama... Seems like cnetz constantly forget that they are supposed to be collective-minded society lol. No star, no matter how great, can shine properly alone, so why the fuss?
- speaking of TTEOTM, fans organized the cutest flashmob ever by taking their ML in his many personas pics to travel to hot tourist spots with them so our poor devil fetus can finally see the beauty of the vast world properly. Awww!

- JOL2 got that airing permit. The promotional and ratings bloodbath in 3, 2, 1...

- LYN confirmed that EB2 hasn't even started the dubbing, meaning we'll really have to wait long (likely 6 to 12 months per regulations) for it to actually air. Yikes.

- also newest rumor says THE TRUTH2 will drop at 27th. I am sooo ready!

- yet another “trust me bro about TPOB airing date” one – now it's around Dragon Boat Festival aka June *deep sigh again *

- ADWAD will start filming in late April-early May. FL is still finishing another show, I think. The working schedule of c-actors is really gruesome... Hopefully we'll get some peeks of costumes at booting ceremony, I'm really intrigued what designer-jie has in mind for LYN.

Career-wise, it may work even better for him this way because sudden unjust death often adds to character's long term buzz and fame which c-writers love to abuse beyond any reason. I'm not sure how popular Jiang was locally, but internationally he's got quite a bit of public love for sure.

I'm genuinely surprised how much it bothered me because I'm usually the last person possible to complain about so-thick-you-can-cut-it-with-jigsaw sexual chemistry between the leads in romance... But drama just didn't go about it the right way with writing and actors performances clearly telling two VERY different stories. Which one I'm supposed to believe then?

Excited for Snake Goddess and I may grow fonder on fiancee the jester, I guess, since he's neither a real threat nor a big jerk. Not SML tho, he's pushing all my wrong buttons at once with his attitude.

I rarely "ship" actors, but these two are utterly shippable, lol. It's hard to believe there isn't something else going on there and the director just went with it. But you're right, it doesn't match the story as well, and perhaps dampened some feistiness on the part of our FL.

The fiancee definitely grew on me and I had a bias for Mo Fang from the beginning (not as the love interest tho).

I need to correct that it's Snake Demon, not Goddess, but kind of the same here really. The actress does a great job with the character.

Some people just look HOT together in one frame, it doesn't necessarily mean anything irl - I think there's even a detailed study about Hollywood actors who hated each other's guts but still looked hella shippable once cameras were on))) I don't think anyone in China minded not-always-logical sparks though, so all is well in the end.

Mo Fang so far has been so annoyingly unreasonable that I simply don't get what should I like about him.

Ha, the dreaded issue of terminology! I think the most correct term here would be asura - immortal spirit of a roughly equal to deities power level, but originating from the realm opposite of Heavenly/Fairy one. Calling them demons is a huge simplification because not all of them are evil or harmful to others by nature. It's like Olympians vs Titans with the latter having a less glamorous reputation mainly for losing big war between the two and thus labelled "bad ones" by history despite them actually being first to exist.

4

@Gikata So much new terminology to learn with c-drama! When I think "demon" I don't think friendly, but this character is not evil. I kind of like "Snake Goddess" better anyway. As for Mo Fang... I mean... just look at him 😂

0

@zindigo oh, I looked. He reminds me of that cancelled c-actor... ML of ASHES OF LOVE, which I loathed both as a show and character, and that's only after 10 episodes, couldn't go further no matter how much I tried))) Not my style at all and that association doesn't help either.

1

@Gikata Oh nooooo! 😂😂😂 I haven't seen AOL and I'm not sure I will as my c-drama watch list is getting very long!

0

@zindigo nah, I didn't mention that show to nudge you watching it - quite the opposite))) In all honesty, I think it was SO horrible and pretty much all characters but one so punchable that even promise of legendary acting from one of my faves was not enough to continue the torture.

Whenever Lin Geng Xin appears on screen, I tend to doze off. It's either because of his good looks or his lack of acting skills. Xianxia is not my genre, but I tried it for Zhao Li Ying. I should've re-watched " Ming Land," but I needed a light drama to balance out "Shogun."

Three-Body (Chinese version): Through 12 episodes, this is thoughtful, creepy, and aesthetically striking. I don't know how I'll feel about the payoffs when we get to them, but so far, I love the production design and how it combines a gritty Cold War vibe with Blade Runner-esque neon and projections. Its use of music/sound design is great as well. This is a show that feels like it was made with great care, which makes me trust that it knows what its doing and where its going.

I've been slow-watching this and even though the pace is slow, it really does the creep, gritty vibe really well with the aesthetics and the sound. Yes, the visuals and the soundscape always make everything feel off-kilter even when relatively ordinary things are happening - it's very cool. I've tried to avoid reading much about the Netflix version until I finish this one, but it seems like just based on the casting they've pulled a lot of the show out of its specifically Chinese context which feels problematic based on how critical Chinese history, ideas and realities are to this version so far. I also like that this one isn't trying to cram everything into 8 episodes.

Hello beanies! Happy Easter again!

These past days I have been on a trip, so I only had time to watch dramas each night when I went to bed, but I was too tired, so I fell sleep after watching just one episode.

What I am watching:

_ C-drama The Legend of Shen Li (24/39). It is a wonderful and very enjoyable show. The main couple gives me all the feels.

What I have finished:

_ Wedding Impossible. I don't understand why the rating in MDL has dropped so much in a few days (from 8'4 to 7'9) after the last episode. There are lots of bad comments! I have not read other beanies' opinions yet, but overall I liked this drama. Even the ending.

Western shows:

_ All the creatures great and small. Season 4 (4/7). Still a happy place and a lovely watch.

CURRENTLY WATCHING, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME, NO KDRAMAS

This week, my Kdrama slump hit a new low— no current Kdramas. The cause could be Chaebol fatigue, impossible plot lines, maybe new drama standard reset after Like Flowers in the Sand , who knows, but taking a little respite by visiting other dramalands.

SHOGUN
The show continues to hold my interest even though it is heavy on political machinations and power plays—not my usual cup of tea. The Japanese cast own this show, especially Hiroyuki Sanada as Toranaga who is the charismatic center of the show. Blackthorne, whether it’s because of the actor or because of the story, is relegated to the side so much that at this point his character makes a doofus (that’s the technical term) cameo each show asking for his ship and men back and not much more. Mariko’s role (very well played by Anna Sawai) is so compelling sad in her duty-bound life—to her lord, her husband and her debt for her family’s “dishonor”—that it is heartbreaking and believable when she says that her wish is for her to be allowed to die.

NOTHING BUT YOU A Cdrama set in the world of competitive tennis that is a slow burn, but rich in character and relationship development. Leo Wu and Zhou Yukons do a wonderful job in showing a mature relationship (even with a 10-year age gap) as they navigate love and career by actually spending time together and talking through issues and concerns. It sounds boring, but the show actually turns out to be compelling and squee-worthy in watching true affection and love develop and be sustained.

COMPLETED

WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE I’ve said a lot about my frustrations about this show. The ending, well, sigh, okay. It was fun, especially the first few episodes of the couple bickering, but in the end (and the middle) the show neglected the plot, the characters and the dog. Thanks for the sparkler until it sadly burned out.

I'm the crazy nut who enjoys politics. 😄 That's the fastest way for me to dive into Japan's history, so I'm grateful for this show. I love the Japanese cast! My only gripe with Ana is that her Mariko speaks fluent English. I think Mariko would not be as fluent.
Jarvis is a great stage and screen actor, but the writing focuses more on the Japanese characters. It doesn't help that it's only going to be 10 episodes.

What’s funny about the English parts is i think they are supposed to be speaking Portuguese when they are speaking English, as Mariko learned Portuguese from the priests when she became Catholic. Blackthorne knows some Portuguese because he’s a mariner. So while they speak English in the show, the common language between Mariko and Blackthorne is Portuguese.

Midnight Studio: Sometimes a head-scratcher must mostly cute enough. The pre-emption a week back really messed with the rhythm, but it does leave me going "omg, what's going to happen next" at the end of each week.

Queen of Tears: I was gutted by having three of my fave characters - Hae-in, Beom-ja, and Soo-cheol- being betrayed by the people they love. At least Hae-in knows that Hyun-woo does still want to be with her. Team Evil bringing down the hammer by episode 8 was such a surprise. I'm worried about spending more time with Hyun-woo's annoying siblings though.

Legend of Shen Li Up to 31. While I was enjoying the drama, ep 23 flipped some switch in me and made me obsessed. It was like how the ML didn't realize his feelings (understandably) until it all hit him once Shen Li is gone. Then it hit me how much I loved Shen Li, the OTP, and the drama. It's xianxia, so I expect to get a bittersweet ending. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the sweetness. And the music for the drama has been top-notch - so many instrumental pieces and variations for all the various moods and all very cohesive. Only complaint is that it got too flashback-heavy when Shen Li was "gone".

Fighting for Love Cdrama. Picked it back up and watched up to ep 14. I really enjoy it for the FL and the surprising touches of humor, but may drop after reading about the second half. May check out the movie version next year. Again, whoever gave it the english title is an idiot. This primarily a war drama.

But yes, all the flashbacks! I've seen complaints about it before but paid no mind, because how bad it can be, right? Well, 8 eps in and there were already TONS of them, in every single episode, usually for no good reason! Did the show lack plot so they needed to use other means to stretch itself or it's a style choice?

I'm so glad to hear about there being a happy ending!! If they can make a happy ending where one character falling in love and wanting a romantic relationship will cause mother nature to destroy the lives of the entire world - then other dramas with sad endings really have no excuse. :)

I didn't notice the flashbacks as much in the beginning, but right after Shen Li was burned to death, they just went on and on until there was pretty much one episode that was 80% flashback. I guess they want to show how much the OTP love each other but trust us - we already know! The chemistry is fire!

Tell 'em! *shakes a fist*

From what I've understood, source material novel is not very long, so perhaps flashbacks were really important to make it nearly 40 episodes drama... From investment point I get it, really - small price for a great production. And I'd rather it be that than PD's personal trademark because I still hope for his other drama to air somehow - there also should be all around HE and OTP making love in all the wrong places whatnot, but tons of flashbacks every other scene would just look WEIRD plot-wise because there's very little truly fond memories between the leads for most of the story to sentimentally reminisce about.

SHOGUN: Still enjoying

QUEEN OF TEARS: This last few episodes had me more engaged. I am expecting that (as the trope goes), the good, poor, smart country folk will teach these mean, dumb, rich, city folk some humility so that they find love, redemption and health. I'm cynical but hopeful.

BOYS OVER FLOWERS (Japanese version). Don't judge my watching to harshly. I needed something easy, so I hit play. I'm really enjoying. Both sweet and weird---so over the top and surreal. Just fun.

WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE: I haven't commented on the finale episodes because after I read what @elinor had to say in the recap post I simply had nothing to add. I enjoyed this show for what it was, and appreciated that it tried to treat the leads with respect by being more thoughtful in its depiction of tropes and conflict. By the end, I was surprised at the dearth of actual romance for our main hetero pair and Do-han as well. The time skip was expected, but still silly. The cameos were cute, though.

QUEEN OF TEARS: Speaking of cameos, like all things, this show did it better than anyone else in recent memory. Even if I hadn't watched and loved "Vincenzo" I still would have found that appearance entertaining and relevant to the story, which shows just how well done it was. Even the sound effects were spot-on. Seeing the Hongs fall from grace this early on was unexpected but satisfying nonetheless, although the grandfather didn't deserve the escape-from-accountability save that the coma will bring. I was shocked also at how quickly the divorce appeared to have gone through; even with Vincenzo's connections, a couple of weeks from filed to final is a stretch. And I miss seeing their rings! But I love that we're now back on Hyung-woo's home turf, and can't wait to see what's next.

HIDE: This show is not boring, and I'll likely keep watching for that reason, but I wish it was more character- and less plot-driven. I will say that I like that the FL is very smart, and her courtroom victory this week was pretty cool. That husband, though, is a real loser.

WELCOME TO SAMALD-RI: I never started this while it was airing, and I'm glad I waited to binge. Five episodes in, it's pretty standard smalltown kdrama fare, but I find it comforting in its familiarity, and it's hard to resist JCW when he plays such devoted, decent characters like this one. Yes, as others have said, the constant reliance on alcohol to fuel scenes and comedy is over-the-top and irresponsible, but clearly not unique among kdramas.

MIDNIGHT STUDIO: I found myself spacing out and fast forwarding a lot, which makes me sad because Joo Won is so handsome and it has been forever since I've seen him in a romantic role. But the narrative isn't quite as compelling as it should be.

Midnight Photo Studio: Brings the tears every time. The main characters have a lot of appeal. Something about the glimmer of hope for the lonely ML who has been counting down his last days. Resistance is futile! Give in a live a little.

Beauty and Mr. Romantic: Will this be the weekender that earns me a bean? In just four episodes, the OTP met cute as kids, parted, reunited, misunderstood each other and reconciled. Things are happening!

Also dabbling in a few c-dramas, namely In Blossom, Detective Dee and Guess Who I Am, but feeling a bit commitment-shy. Hoping that Lovely Runner will help pull me out of this mini slump.

The writer of BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC was also the writer of the last Weekender that was a ratings hit: YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN. That drama also had the same actor playing the ML- so the writer also starts this show with a lot of experience with and knowledge of the male lead. What has been even more encouraging for me is that the writer seems to have learned lessons from that previous hit show: In YL&G there was a brief 'meet cute' between our ML and FL that did little to advance the story to come. In our present weekender our ML and FL also met in the past but this time we got a full three-episode story arc that truly lays out a foundation for what is to come- and with the younger versions of ML and FL being played by outstanding young performers who delivered first class portrayals of out characters.

That being said: We are still very much in the beginnings of this show. Appropriate prayers to The Drama Gods are still in order for this one.

COMPLETED
Wedding Impossible: I loved the first 8 episodes but the last 4 just didn't do it for me. I was expecting this to be a full-on romcom with a "mission impossible" theme. It wasn't. Glad we at least got a cute proposal, Kim Bum, and a handful of decent scenes at the end, but I was left somewhat disappointed overall. Btw, the instrumental score was released and it's lots of fun.

WATCHING
The Midnight Studio: I love that I'm crying my way through this. I guess I need some cathartic crying atm 🥲 It's thoughtful and sweet and hits all the right notes. Bonus this week: Seo Ji Hoon. I saved ep 7 and will start watching in the intended pairs next week.

Flex X Cop: Not sure why this has been such a slow watch because I'm really enjoying it. Only managed 1 ep this week. 5 to go!

C-DRAMA
The Legend of Shen Li: This story really caught me by surprise and has had me in its crafty clutches the whole ride. I've been thoroughly entertained. Watching on Viki, so I still have 6 eps left.

STARTING MONDAY
Carry Sun-Jae and Run (aka Lovely Runner): I know, I know. It's going to be annoying that I won't call it by its "real" name. Would it help if I told you that there's YET ANOTHER drama scheduled to release this year that's likely to have "Lovely" in its title?! 🙄

Wishing you all a great week! 😎

IMO Carry Sun-Jae and Run is the best out of the dozen odd lover-ly alternate titles on MDL. Even more so now after ep 1. Please carry on with this title unapologetically. After all you're in Beaniedom the land of free-flowing titles. If in doubt just ask @lordcobol or @hacja who can come up with the best of titles of a whim.

“What we’re watching“
Watching Continued:
One Woman: Very fun. Except the criminal that was promised security and then killed in prison while desperately trying to contact FL … they took that very lightly, all of them.
Queen of Tears: So looking forward to in-law fortune-and-charity reversal tonight. I am enjoying it so much – also the love and the crying … but please, please end with a miracle!
Before I ever watched k-dramas, I read an article about Love Alarm, and I watched a couple of episodes but was very disappointed that all the questions that had filled my head was not reflected in the drama, so dropped it in the middle of ep 3. Well … I might give it a chance more.
Finished:
Wedding Impossible: I loved that drama, but I really hated how much time was wasted on a pathetic time skip and lack of romance toward the ending, when there could have been happy gay love, happy straight love, and something a bit more fantastic for the fantastic 2FL. I thought the forgiveness coupon was brilliant, pitch black humour. I giffed about all of it on my wall. (Link will follow in comments)
If we assume that grandpa paid the chairman place for the forgiveness coupon, and we know that my beloved Evil Noona dressed in white and threw herself into charity, then we can say there was a final point about money not being everything that was quite fine. Could have made more about that, though. Could have shown how FL grew in her career all the while being loved and kissing ML. Can’t see how all that languishing should be necessary. A good loudmouthed argument should have done it. Also, now that the forgiveness coupon was doing the rounds, Ji-han could have used that, too - that would have been so funny. Especially if the A-jeong had given it to Do-han for not keeping her promise, and he then to the Ex for having ghosted him ... D*mn, that could have been a really fun way of using that time skip waste-of-time instead.
Not a K-drama:
Bird Box Live Cam: The setting is right outside my window, in a box. My sister visited from England and brought cat hair to be hung in a net in a tree not too far from the bird box. Ms. Titmouse has been building the soft inner site of the nest for a week. Also, someone tried to steal the nest! It has rained a lot.
SPY Family such a hilarious anime – I recommend it heartily. Three socially harmed and very pretty people with each their “Set of special skills” that they keep secret from each other (spying, assassinating, telepathy) make a chosen family for practical reasons but quickly start feeling love, while trying to keep their secrets and pretending to be very, very normal. Chased, of course by all sorts of evil people.

Work limited my drama watching this week.

I think that QUEEN OF TEARS is my favorite show right now.

Our new weekender BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC has started very well. I am looking forward to episodes 5 and 6.

The new Daily in SU JI AND U RI is a watchable time filler but nowhere near the quality of UNPREDICTABLE FAMILY.

WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE was good until it wasn’t and I stopped.

My wife has continued to enjoy THE JUDGE DEE MYSTERY which inspired her to watch several other detective dramas- she just finished the second season of ANNIKA. She also decided to finish her watch of DESERT ISLAND DIVA. But before that she finished her watch of the classic 2013 drama KANGCHI, THE BEGINNING (really better known as GU FAMILY BOOK). My wife is a big fan of gumiho’s.

I checked out the C-drama GUESS WHO I AM and it is a pleasant watch.

I love UNPREDICTABLE FAMIILY but I do see what you mean. I think that part of what happened is that it seems to have received a two-week extension which always has an impact when it happens. Still, I liked it to the end.

I am watching the new daily, but it is does not at this point have that joyous spirit which you noted with UNPREDICATBLE FAMILY and which is rare in any drama. It is watchable but not as delightful.

As for the new weekender- it has started very well. We are hoping it stays that way.

WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE: Yes! My first 2024 show! Well, it was a decent rom-com from start to finish but the last two episodes were like out a different drama altogether characterwise. I did not enjoy the noble idiocy nor the time skip the way it happened. But I did enjoy Lee Soo-hyuk's cameo.

AN ANCIENT LOVE SONG: This drama, although sad, is wonderful. The short episodes are well utilised and the acting is beautiful. I was never disappointed in the sad ending, I felt the timeline was quite clear on this and gave me time to prepare emotionally. I highly recommend this.

UNDER THE POWER: There is a very beautiful BGM in this show and it has mesmerized me enough to watch the show itself. I've tried previously but was put off by the terrible scowl on the male lead. Scowling is an art. For good reference, one might look at Wang Yibo in the Untamed, that was excellent. This time around, I'm set to endure. The show is highly rated and I've used the BTS to ascertain that the actor knows how to smile and in fact looks very cute when he does. I'm just not sure that it will appear on screen if the opening/ending credits are to judge by. If he does however, I will finally take the time to watch my girl-crush Bai Lu's drama Forever and Ever, which I've steered clear of because of that scowl.

So glad to see Under the Power get mentioned! I loved it, though I think it could have benefited from having today's 40 episode count restriction. Unfortunately, the ML does scowl and stay stony-faced for a lot of the drama. His smiles are indeed rare, but I sort of enjoy how he rarely smiles and the FL is the one who soften his scowls and brings out the rare smile. It also helps that the FL is the effervescent Tan Song-yun and that they've chosen a fantastic voice dubbing actor for the ML since I feel like Allen Ren is one of those actors who really need to be dubbed.

Ghosts as a concept scare me, unable to see, smell, touch or hear them and thus being paranoid that they could be anywhere and everywhere is what I’d consider to be the ultimate torture. Zombies, Vampires and (evil) Aliens etc don’t scare me, just the ability to see them physically puts me at ease. If I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die, however ghosts have the ability to torture me for eternity (or more realistically the length of my human lifespan).

PARASYTE: THE GREY (Ep. 1-5)
I personally wouldn’t categorise this as a horror, while yes this drama has a lot of gore, and is not for the squeamish (even I had to look away and fast-forward some scenes) I’d still categorise it as a thriller. It’s very bingeable and action heavy. Also I’m happy to say Jeon So-nee is amazing in this, she actually blew my mind. I’m one of those beanies who didn’t like (and dropped) OBY and specifically didn’t like her character. So yeah I had some prejudice going into PARASYTE, but Jeon So-nee absolutely nailed the duality of her role!

As it’s only been a couple of days since this show has been released, I’m not going to mention any spoilers, only that if any of this interests you, please give it a go!

- AMIDST A SNOWSTORM OF LOVE (China - ep. 04/30) : the romance is very cute and realist, the actors are talented, but I don't feel anything at the moment. The episodes seem long to me.

- KESENAI "WATASHI" (Japan - ep. 08/13) : I'm looking forward to the next episodes, which promise to be interesting !

- SU JI AND U RI (South Korea - 10/120) : a pleasing drama. Na Young is unbearable.

Shogun ep7 I have theories! Toranaga really keeps his heart hidden from everyone. I doubr he would give up so easily. While his son is as rash as ever. I almost do not feel sorry foe him. I keep thinking about Mariko and her real mission.

Queen of Tears ep 7-8 the epilogue with Yeong Suk is so hilarious. While the next episode epilogue is equally charming. A lot has happened this week, big plot movement that made me so excited for the new episodes. Yongduri will be turned upside down!

Europe Outside Our Tent: Southern France ep5 love this show. Each actress already showing their unique personality as each spend time with each other. Mi Ran is the cook, Ga In is the financier and the two maknaes are young and free spirited. They are up for anything their unnies like.

Apartment 404 ep1-4 I watched this because I wanted to see how Lee Jung Ha is in variety. I learned to like him and the other cast too. I love Oh Nara. Ihave seen hwr in other varieties as well. Cha Tae Hyun, Yu Jae Seok and Yang SeChan aee variety veterans so they know what to do. Jennie is a surprise, She flourishes in this type of variety.

Eternal Brotherhood ep11 I am trying

The Legend of Shen Li ep 1-8 I don't have good track record on c-dramas. I just watched this since its the latest buzzy cdrama. I will not continue though it just did not click for me.

If the show made the three guys the main plot point and lessened princess annoying to a side character. Made another female character a main. And everything you said. Watching this would not feel like such a pain.

2

@jillian she's simply the main by the "virtue" of being ML's love interest, so that couldn't be helped, I guess. Tho I've heard the talks about her role being smaller and less annoying in the novel - at least early on when his bros are still alive. Wonder if producers decided that such a dude show needs "moar romance" to sell?

1

@gikata ughh I guess it can't be helped. they shouldve kept her scenes at a minimum and expanded more on other characters that had a bigger role in the main conflict.

I don't even remember what I watched this week. I think I just watched alot of recap/review videos of drama as well as rewatched Sword of Aramun now that I had more context since I had seen fanvids of season 1.

It made me appreciate the history that was featured in Sword of Aramun even if I didn't feel that history or attachment. I also appreciated the new actors stepping into those roles. I imagine it's not easy to do such a thing.

After watching all the Lee Joon Gi projects that I've seen so far, I still think Flower of Evil is the project I've liked most. It really does have everything. I would recommend that show a 100 times.

I considered watching Kim Jae Wook (I think that's his name; the lead from Her Private Life) projects so I watched his movie Antique. I don't know how I feel about the movie. It was kinda weird (but ever since I've watched Chicken Nugget, using "weird" seems like the wrong word haha). One thing I thought was I thought it was probably brave of him to play a gay character who actually exudes sexuality/sensuality. The guy from Kingdom & Hyena is also in it (I am not a fan of his mustache) as well as Yoo Ah In.

Midnight Photo Studio. The first hour made me cry and the second hour made me a mix of sad and mad. I wondered how the hotline counselor could keep talking to her on a regular schedule. And of course I wondered how he could've found her location in the first place. Why was no one else curious about that? Then again I guess the narrative of a crisis hotline operator sacrificing his life to help someone in distress is too noble for people to wanna think beyond it.

Queen of tears ep 5-6: I think I just need to accept this might not be for me despite the rave about it. It was such a pain to get through those couple of episodes. I am not sure exactly what bothers me. I think it might be that the love story is not believable because we were not shown how it escalated to be so bad to the point where there are this awkward with each other. Also, the families frustrate me. I don't think I have the patience for a family that gullible on Hae Jin's side and I keep on rolling my eyes with Hyun Woo's family: I have no patience for the way they are portrayed.

Crash landing on you: still enjoying this rewatch! But now I recall that I did not quite enjoyed the second part as I did the first part.

Current crop of dramas isn't really compelling for me, so switched it up to some of my backlog.

TAXI DRIVER season 1 was fabulous but dark. I'm going to need a breather before taking on season 2. Dark is ok, as long as there is some humor (see VINCENZO...).

My local library's Hoopla picked up THE MOON (2023). Space scares the bejesus out of me. I like Do Kyungsoo in this story, so I took in the first few episodes of BAD PROSECUTOR. This one has real possibilities.

My happy watch of the week goes to the Chinese film THIS IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED on Amazon Prime. What a charming sprite of a movie! As long as movies were working for me, I enjoyed both MAN IN LOVE and FALL IN LOVE LIKE A STAR.

Six episodes in with the smart JUDGE DEE. Six episodes in to my re-watch of the week, SH**TING STARS. I'm so fond of this show, it's sunny and well done!

Looking hopefully to LOVELY RUNNER for something fresh, and maybe give a look at Ju Ji-Hoon in BLOOD FREE if it's picked up by Hulu.

Just one small gripe. There are two k-dramas I'd very much like to see: MY SECRET TERRIUS (love this plot) and SIX FLYING DRAGONS (never seen Yoo Ah-In in anything except DESCENDANTS OF THE SUN cameo). Any Dramabeans contributor who can tell me where these are available in US?

I kept up to date with QoT and Wedding Impossible and commented on them on the threads.
Apart from that, I needed something easy so rewatched
A business proposal , except ff thru Grandfather Chairmans parts in the last 8 episodes. We all know that what Really happened is that GF Chairman was ecstatic about the thought of having Grandkids, and was totally on board with their wedding and way too enthusiastic about them getting together early and often. It got a bit awkward and embarrasing for them really, especially while still trying to keep their relationship a secret at work! They did go off with him to the US for his operation, and that meant the other grandkid Seung Hoon had to step up and run the company. SH doesn't have as much interest and flair for food as Kang Tae Moo, but he is trustworthy and smart. And Jin Yong Seo has a real flair for marketing, and her new business did a joint project with Go Foods and edged her Dad's company out of a critical market, which pissed him off no end.
Of course, JYS's Dad still has a lot of business and media influence, which is why all that fake reporting about Grandad/chairman hating Shin Hari and Tae Moos wedding got in the news, but you should never believe everything you see...

Having read the webtoon I can only say that the later part of BP was not that faithful to the original story. For reasons that remain a total mystery to me two crucial changes were made to the story that took away from what would have been perhaps the greatest romcom of all. First, our 2ML really is Grandpa's biological grandson - and when 2FL's father opposes the marriage Grandpa shows up to save the day. Second, 2FL's daddy is not the heartless calculating Chaebol of the drama but someone who loves his daughter but indeed desperately wants her to be his successor.

In a sense, because of these totally unnecessary and damaging changes from the webtoon story, it became a different drama. Among other things we did not get to see that wonderful moment when the 2 FL pays him back by riding to Grandpa's rescue to make a deal with her Daddy- one where Daddy finally gets what he wants: His daughter agreeing to train to take his place as Chairman someday.

In response to last week's "Drama Chat" about hate-watching, if I dropped every drama that went downhill, then I wouldn't be watching any dramas at all. It's extremely rare for dramas to stay good from start to finish. Every show has a lull in the middle. So this week, I finished two dramas that maybe I should've dropped, but I wouldn't call them hate-watches.

The Impossible Heir: Who okayed this drama? Who read this script and thought it would be a good idea? Why did Lee Jae-wook and Lee Jun-young sign up for this show? Tae-oh got the death penalty, yet In-ha only got life in prison, so he kills himself? Nothing was ever explained. Why did In-ha pair up with Mo Gi-jun before he even met Tae-oh in high school with the intent to frame him? At least after Tae-oh found out that In-ha's a sociopath, Lee Jae-wook was finally able to act again, not just pathetically pine over Hye-won. "I can't have the same dream as you, Baek In-ha?" "Of course not. You're not Kang Joong-mo's son." I was holding my breath at that moment expecting our plot twist, "But I am his son." Who is Tae-oh's biological father? I knew that since his stepfather was convicted of his mom's murder, it would be double jeopardy. Tae-oh befriending the thugs was cute, but I'm sad that we never got to see Michael Chang. I adored North Korean hacker Wan, and I swooned at his stealing the traitor's gun. Sung-joo tearfully telling his mother, "My entire life I've never once been happy." I felt that. The only good thing about this show was its OST "Yesterday's Today (어제의 오늘)" by Kim Yong-jin. I loved this song. I can't believe that this was my #1 most-anticipated February drama premiere (I'm afraid to say what my #2-4 were).

Wedding Impossible: I'm on the side of the internet that disliked this drama. Korean viewers verbalized all my problems with this show. Moon Sang-min can't act, and Jeon Jong-seo can't do romance, and they had no romantic chemistry. I know that she's a fantastic actress, but she needs to stick to dark action thrillers, her forte because her line delivery is monotonous (he's monotonous too but that's because of his wooden acting), so her dialogue sounds insincere, and her eyes are emotionless. The romance was unbelievable because Ah-jung and Ji-han were miscast, but the friendship wasn't believable either. Ah-jung and Do-han didn't seem close, and our best friends barely knew anything about each other. It sucks that Do-han's hand was basically forced into coming out. While I'm happy that he's feeling free now, and I'm not blaming Ah-jung or Ji-han (but eff you, ex-boyfriend Dae-hyun!), Do-han never wanted to come out but had to. From the beginning, Ah-jung had rejected Do-han's proposal and only accepted it to spite Ji-han, so she has every right to regret her decision, but it's still cheating. I don't care if he's gay or it's fake. On top of that, she's an unprofessional actress. Beanies were mad at...

Rant cont.: Beanies were mad at Do-han for promising Dad that he would take care of Ah-jung, but of course, because they had agreed to pretend to be married. He was just acting his part as her fiancé. Ah-jung had one job and failed at it badly. Who goes on dates and spends the night at hotels with their brother-in-law? I could not get over her pretending to be Ji-han's girlfriend at the company her future husband was supposed to take over. I was shocked that the two of them weren't caught earlier. Frenemy actress Na-ri is so messy and would've talked about Ah-jung behind her back, and jerk blind date has no shame and would've spread rumors about Ji-han being Ah-jung's sponsor among their entire chaebol circle. The best actor in this drama was Park Ah-in playing half-sister Seung-ah. All her facial expressions were on point.

I'm glad others found something to enjoy, but I dropped it around week 3 since the shallowness of the friendship sort of rubbed me the wrong way - hanging out with the BIL a lot while ignoring your BFF, with whom you've teamed up with to fool his family...which also ended up also being unprofessional given the contract. If I told my BFF that I would help them with something majorly important...aside from my family, that thing would be something that I take seriously. And why wasn't the BFF more concerned that the FL/his BFF lied to him about her success? Given that they were both unemployed/freelancing, why not hang out more? It seemed like having a gay BFF was just used as a mere launching pad.

Having a gay best friend was just a plot device for the OTP to get together without the need for a love triangle. You dropped it, so I hope that this isn't a spoiler, but in the second to last episode after Do-han comes out in a press conference, Ah-jung and Ji-han break up, and she says, "Do-han says it's not because of us, but we know it is," so they at least had some self-awareness. What made me mad was she didn't even try in their fake marriage. No loyalty to her best friend whatsoever. And Jeon Jong-seo's acting didn't help because everything she said sounded flippant. I know that we all have different tastes, but it was a mystery to me why this drama was so popular on Dramabeans. Besides the romance, the subplot about their mom's death was just terrible.

This week I watched the end of Wedding Impossible. I really enjoyed this one. One thing I love about Korean dramas is the commitment of the actors to realizing their characters, no matter the content of the drama. The two leads gave their all to what is in the end kind of a silly premise. The last episode was pretty weak writing-wise, but I still enjoyed seeing all the characters one last time.

I'm also watching Midnight Studio, speaking of a silly premise. It's not a very good story, honestly. I'm enjoying it anyway! I like it when a show uses its premise to create episodic stories. Also Kwon Nara is very cute, even when her character makes no sense.

Uncharacteristically, I decided to watch the thriller drama Hide. It's very twisty! I finished last night's episode saying out loud, "Wow, it's only episode 6! What's going to happen next?" Though at least one unlikely twist was predicted by a beanie here.

I'm trying to spend less time watching TV, so naturally I decided to rewatch The Queen's Umbrella. I wanted to see Moon Sang-min doing his thing there too! I remember how surprised I was when I watched this one the first time. I didn't really like Kim Hye-soo in the roles I had seen her in, even when I really liked the show. I thought she was like the William Shatner of Korean actors. (Shatner played Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek--he loves pregnant pauses and other ridiculous over dramatics.) In The Queen's Umbrella, Kim Hye-soo was perfect. PERFECT. She created an atmosphere of excellence for the other, younger actors, making me believe in their relationships. It was a good way to waste time on a rainy day when I was feeling sad and making dumplings.

I hadn't liked Kwon Nara in any drama I had seen her before. I warmed up to her in Young Actors' Retreat. She is really cute IRL. It was fun to see that even though she was in the Itaewon Class Team, she would hang around Ji Chang-wook calling him Oppa. Guess the formed a close friendship in Suspicious Partner.

Ugh, I didn't like Bulgasal. I only watched it because of her! I even watched it until the end. There might be a pattern here.

It is on my slump watch list! The premise seems just like what I would love but somehow I couldn't get around to it.
