Script reading for healing fantasy Although I’m Not a Hero

It’s been two years since Jang Ki-yong (Now, We Are Breaking Up) last graced our screens, and his comeback project is finally kicking into gear. JTBC’s upcoming fantasy-romance Although I’m Not a Hero has commenced its promotion cycle with script reading stills, featuring the central characters of this healing tale.

Despite being blessed with extraordinary powers, the morale of our titular not-hero Bok Gwi-joo (Jang Ki-yong) has been slipping steadily. Ever since he developed depression, he’s been unable to harness his time-slip ability to relive joyful moments like he once used to. Talk about losing something just when you need it most! With no other way to chase happiness other than to grasp at straws in the present, Gwi-joo grows wearied and listless.

Alas, Gwi-joo’s family isn’t much better off. Although the superhuman feats run in the family, it seems this emotional slump has the entire household in its grasp. The clairvoyant matriarch Go Du-shim (Island) can’t see the future in dreams when she’s plagued by insomnia, and noona Soo-hyun (Chimera) finds herself grounded by her disordered eating. As for the late bloomer maknae Park So-yi (Revenant), she’s frustrated by how she hasn’t acquired her powers yet, and puberty isn’t helping her prickly mood. Even the only regular human in the family — the househusband dad Oh Man-seok (Wonderful World) — finds himself at a loss as to how he can help.

Just as Gwi-joo is lamenting his inability to save anyone, including himself, an unexpected meeting spurs a much-needed change. Do Da-hae — played by Chun Woo-hee (Delightfully Deceitful) — comes knocking on the Bok family’s door one day, an air of enigmatic mystery to her. Like a stroke of destiny, she’s in need of saving, and who should rescue her but Gwi-joo himself. Stunned by what he’s just managed to do, Gwi-joo begins to take his first step towards overcoming his affliction, and along the way, Da-hae will help the Bok family heal from their struggles too.

Helmed by PD Jo Hyun-tak (Snowdrop) with scripts by Joo Hwa-mi (Welcome), the drama’s production will be guided by content creation studio Gleline and writer Kang Eun-kyung (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3). Although I’m Not a Hero is set to air on weekend nights, with its premiere episode coming to JTBC on May 4.

Oh my, look how fast Park So-Yi is growing up! This drama has me intrigued and I'll definitely be giving it a try. It sounds light, enjoyable, and hopefully not too heavy on the "healing" given its superpowers theme. We need a break from the heavy after Doctor Slump. I'm glad it's only 12 eps.

To say I didn't recognize Jang Ki Jong is the understatement of the century, I was on soompi and I was like where is he. Then I realized it was supposed to be him in the photo and I was still confused. I said who is that? Lol, maybe it is the hair and the angle, but even now looking at the photo I still don't see him and think it is Hong Kyung, lol.

This is one instant where the hairstyle has been transformative for me so I also didn’t recognise him as I had only seen him with the upswept style.

Preface. As I now do for Lee Joon-hyuks I will start added the birth year to differentiate the Oh Man-seoks (1965 and 1975). Initially I thought Oh Man-seok (1975) was in the cast and I thought finally OMS in a good guy role lol. However the cast includes Oh Man-seok (1965) who just handled himself well in the early episodes of QUEEN OF TEARS.

Thank you @solstices for this synopsis. ALTHOUGH I AM NOT A HERO sounds much more interesting now than when I first got wind of it as Jang Ki-yong’s comeback (from the military) drama.
Although I am a JKY fan since I saw his terrific performance in MBC’s COME AND HUG ME (2018) (Viki US) (highly recommended) I have only seen him in a couple of other dramas: OCN’s KILL IT (2019) (Viki US) and on a delayed basis KBS’s GO BACK COUPLE (2017) (Viki US). I enjoyed both those dramas but it has been awhile since I have seen one of his dramas.
Those who have seen JKY in CAHM know that he can do ‘depressed’ quite well. Probably the same could be said about his performance in KILL IT.
I really enjoyed Go Doo-shim as the matriarch in KBS’s CURTAIN CALL (2022) (Viki US). GDS is not playing a grandmother here but according to AIANAH’s Wikipedia page she will be playing mom to JKY and sis Claudia Kim (Kim Soo-hyun). The same source lists Park So-yi as playing JKY’s daughter Bok In-ah. Does that mean JKY’s character is divorced or a widower? I will try to figure this out.

He was also really good in My Mister. However, he does best in these sad sack roles. His best performances to date were in My Mister and Come and Hug Me.

tvN’s MY MISTER (2018) is another very well regarded drama I didn’t get to when it aired. Also in the cast besides JKY is Go Doo-shin so we will have one degree of separation. I queued MY MISTER up on Viki.

I'm not a big fan of Jang Ki-Yong as a lead, I think supporting roles suit him better. He often is overshadowed by other actors like Kim Kyung-Nam in Come and Hug Me.

The plot is quite weird... Not convinced by this future drama for now.

I would love for Chun Woo-hee to show up at my door, especially if she’s as kickass as in Be Melodramatic. I am super excited to watch her again.

I like the cast, I like the premise. If I like the vibe we're in for a hit drama. For now - it's wait and watch.
