Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (December 23, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Currently covering: Like Flowers in Sand

The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract: Episode 3, let’s go! I’m so far behind but this is loads of fun. I loved seeing our leads collaborating over the painting, and the fall-kiss trope is always appreciated. Lee Se-young as Yeon-woo is soooo charming here, I can see why Tae-ha is falling hard and fast. (But why was he carrying her on his back if he has a heart condition and tries not to run…)

mary

Duty After School: This show somehow flew under my radar but that has since been rectified with a few all-nighters. While binging, I went from being frustrated at the whiny heroes to accepting that this is a story about immature high schoolers who got combat training when they shouldn’t have. This realization saved me from being too mad at that controversial ending. I’m also glad it managed to erase my irrational hate for Shin Hyun-soo after he played that sunbae-who-fell-out-of-love so well in Age of Youth 2.

Single’s Inferno 3: Someone described Gwan-hee as “that man who got the Park Sae-ro-yi special” and I just had to share. That being said, that man is such a red flag and obvious gaslighter that I can’t believe he actually has multiple ladies liking him. Did K-drama discussions just raise my taste in men to impossibly normal standards?

Season's Greetings, Beanies 🎄❄🎇! Hope everyone has a wonderful last week of the year! My drama week -

ONGOING
The Matchmakers - I'm watching the last 3 episodes together on Monday as a demonstration of my iron will power 😂.

A Good Day to Be a Dog - Everything about this curse and the past life is so irrational. What does Bo-gyeom even achieve with the memory erasure?!

My Man is Cupid - I'm glad the cops finally know who the real witness is. That was frustrating to watch (though maybe realistic? 🤔). Also Show, we all know the real 1000th time was when she returned to pick up the photo and met ML 💅.

Didn't manage to watch My Demon, The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, or Welcome to Samdal-ri so I have a ton of episodes to catch-up on now. I'd say thank god for the holidays but they always end up being even busier than normal days 😅.

STARTED
Started Like Flowers in Sand and it's interesting. I've always liked the glimpses of ssireum I've gotten in k-variety so this should be fun (minus the match-fixing nonsense - is it impossible to make sports dramas without them?? 🙄)

C-DRAMAS
Completed A Journey to Love. Watched the last 10 episodes at one go and maybe that's why I disliked the ending even more than others 😬.

Also completed Love Me, Love My Voice - more food and travel show vibes.

Iron will power it is indeed. 😄

Oh, now I'm sure I will not come back to Journey. Why do cdramas do that?? 왜??

I don't know 😭. This year in particular has been really bad for c-drama endings though. It's like writers either simply can't commit to an ending or think giving their characters a bad ending/open ending somehow makes the show deeper and more meaningful 🙄.

I'm still laughing at this comment...in reference to all the things we watch, not just cdramas.

Art doesn't have to be "meaningful" to be art for me, but boy is it annoying when the art I'm watching starts out being about the squees but then it all turns around and insists that it's about the painful nature of the human condition...and I'm all, but you started off with the SQUEES!

I'm gonna start calling this a "squee-leader" (like a loss leader). Don't trick me in to your store with all of your tasty, tasty squees, and then bilk me with your sad, maudlin deep meaning.

Some dramas start as they mean to go on--obviously being from the start about the painful realities of being human--but not so much with others!!!

13

YEAH SEON-HA!!!!! You tell it like it is. 😤 Be consistent, shows!!! Stop trying to trick us with your paltry attempts at - what? Manufactured depth? FAUGH.

8

Oops - forgot to @ you, @attiton 😂 See above.

1

Well, @attiton , some creators think that if everyone is DEAD at the end of their art work, they get a Palm or a Bear or something...

4

I watched the first three episodes of Journey to Love, but backed out when I heard about the ending... 😨 왜? Why??

What?! I'm 12 eps in. Don't tell me it has a bad ending! (But seriously, don't tell me the ending. I need to think about whether to proceed now.) Ok, ok, at least tell me this... is it Heartbeat-level bad? Or just annoying bad?

I think the ending was rushed and badly written. The bulk of the plot was pushed into the last 6 episodes. The fate of most of the characters was also...not what you'd want...

2

Oh boy.... I can't answer that question without telling you too much... 😬😅 There are plenty of clear spoilers in this thread, so proceed with caution if you really don't want to know! (*do you want a hint? Really? Are you sure? SPOILER BELOW
.
.
.
.
... ok... it's worse than HeartBeat going by body count, is what I read*)

2

@miso2019 @hopefulromantic Thank you! That was helpful. Maybe I'll just call it quits here, even though I'm currently enjoying it. Better to go out on a high note ha!

2

Oh no - I was planning on watching this for
Liu Yu Ning as he is one of my favorite actors and especially his songs!
I don't want to hear any more.......

2

I didn't mind the sad ending. It was a suicide mission. It makes sense to me for a group of professional assassins/spies; it was the honorable way to go. They couldn't retire and be free from killing even if they wanted to.
I wouldn't say I liked the writer's attempt at the unnecessary open ending. It should have been clear.
This show should have been more than 40 episodes, but that was the limit for C-dramas.
2023 set a low bar IMO. It wasn't perfect, but it was the best wuxia this year for me.

I didn't mind the sad ending so much since it is consistent with their mission and calling. I did mind the way they wrote the ending.

The last few episodes just became a series of "someone will do something heroic/dumb/heroically dumb leading to their death". If important, characters get a whole episode focussed just on them and their death. If not that important, more than 1 person will die 🙄.

2

I agree that the show should have given more time and focus on each death. Despite this, the characters remained true to their nature until the end. The journey was enjoyable, and I fell in love with all of them, including some supporting characters. They were well-written for the most part, except for the little bastard Li Tongguang (*sigh*) Wasted opportunity. He could have been Yang Ying's equal.

2

Li Tongguang was the WORST. Seriously what a difference from Yang Ying.

2

Cupid: then why does the shaman say that she is falling for the wrong person and that she should hold on to the man she met the 1000th time.
So the palace maid who died was reincarnated as the FL? I was surprised that the Joseon prince got his real face while the FL didn’t.

Vague fantasy with no rules is totally appropriate for this show though lol

Such low quality action with bad bad editing and typical cringe side characters, main hero-heroine in their own lala land - the show is as expected a Wuxia - 10 episodes enough to move on to new drama.

Tell Me that you love Me: I continue to love Mo Eun and Jin Woo’s interactions. You can tell they take genuine joy in their interactions together. Her family’s reactions are gross and I am glad it doesn’t dampen or cause struggle in her feelings for him. Ji Yu and Mo Dam’s relationship is relativity unsparky, lol, that isn’t a word, but there is no there there with them. So I don’t really care about that, but outside of the weirdo dance they have happening, Ji Yu is delightful. I also really like Song Seo Kyung, she seems like a genuinely kind person who is trying her best. So I appreciate her in a sea of jealous exes, inappropriate crushes, and annoying 2M/FLs.

The Matchmakers: These last two episodes kind of bored me, I only watched for my fav couple Oraboni and Sam Soon. Everything else was a little tedious for me.

Like Flowers in the Sand: JDY’s character is so earnest here in the sweetness way, but also a little slow, lol. I like learning about sports I was unaware of, so this is fun for me. Here is to Du Shik and Baek doo being the soul mates he believes them to be.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: I don’t get this punishment, it has been hundreds of years. Didn’t you punish them while alive, why punish them now. SIGH, it has really soured what was originally cuteness and kisses. It is now just weird.

My Demon: Sexy love, all the things we do, got be sprung, got me running back to you, ooh I love making love to you…….(in my Neyo voice). This latest episode was cute, but now my annoyance with the 2L has arisen. I get why Seok Hun is worried, I do, a demon. I get it, but sir, why especially with Ga Yeong. SIGH, I would rather he had been the one trying to kill her, this is just tedious.

The story of Park’s Marriage Contract: This drama continues to be my joy. Our leads and second leads are just so wonderful together, not even Haraboji can break them apart. They will persevere and stick to each other’s sides.

Gyeongseong Creature: The creature was not what I expected. The rest of the drama is rather slow. The character development is lacking too. It is a weird juxtaposition of bad character development and little to no movement in the greater plot, hmm, I am only 4 episodes in, but I feel like I should care more about the characters and I just don’t, but I’ll keep watching, maybe it gets better.

Soundtrack #2: It was fine, great kisses though. The actors did their best with what was given, but it was rather shallow though.

Maestra: Strings of Truth: LEAVE Se Eum alone. Leave her to her music and orchestra. CEO, go away, she doesn’t want you. As for her husband, try not to be a liability sir.

Welcome to Samdal Ri: My other sunshine show. I am glad Samdal can move on and rebuild herself again. I am not sure she needs Yong Pil for that, but he will be there, as will poor poor Sang Do, who doesn’t stand a single chance.
My man is Cupid: I have no idea what is happening in this show. The Raiden looking guy disappeared. Now we...

LIVE WATCHES
The Matchmakers
I'm going to be directly honest with you all. I've still not watched episodes 14-15. I have seen the preview for episode 16. I will be back in touch on Christmas Day about whether or not I'll be on Dramabeans anymore or if I've quit watching K-dramas forever. OK, no, not that dramatic. OK, wait, yes, that dramatic.

My Demon
Super, SUPER disappointed in Friday's episode. I may be in the "Silent Watch" (which is right next to, but not the same as the "Hate Watch") category for the rest of the run, unless they turn it around from being a second-rate HeartBeat clone back into being the funny, self-deprecating farce it was at the beginning.

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract
It was cute yesterday, folks! I think it might continue being cute-ish until the end?? I don’t hate the step-mom rehabilitation twist…that was sort of good? I am being swayed to understanding TSoPMC as a sweet show that should simply not be taken too seriously, and it, in return, won’t take itself too seriously either.

LYOL (not even skimming for the gifs)
Dropped until @dorotka insists I return. Maybe writernim will get it together.

Welcome to Samdal-ri
I really liked episode 6, people!! That puts me and @kafiyah-bello into a little company of, well, just the two of us. Wouldn’t it be great if the rest of the episodes were sweet and cute and healing, and our characters grew and changed, and we all have a happy ending?

FROM THE RESERVES
W
Done! Not earth-shattering, but delightful all the same. My favorite parts were...when our ML got to know our FL again, and fell in love with her...again.

My Liberation Notes
I started, I started!!! I really liked the first episode, and I rarely am hooked this fast...so, here...we...goooo!!!! I have off until next Friday!! Let’s GIT IT!

Do you think the female lead will give up her foolish ambition to try to do something creative, marry one of the small town hunks, and just "find herself" as a mother and a gossiping diver, subject of ogling tourists from Seoul who point and laugh at her as a small town primitive, as she herself cackles about the ridiculous "modern" young women who try to be "independent" and escape the loving tiny community of Samdal-ri and become professionals in the big city?

3

@hacja Huh. No...I just thought she'd drink herself into a stupor and get run over by a ToD. That'll be in episode 8. The remaining eight episodes will be devoted to her funeral.

No, seriously, if they can really up the ante simply on Wookie staring at Shin Hye-sun helplessly and adoringly with those eyes of his, promising to support her every move and every desire without question (even if he doesn't have the mental capacity to otherwise), I'll probably be happy for at least four more episodes.

2

Actually, while the vast majority of Hallmark movies I've seen are retrogressive in the way they sentimentalize domesticity and "traditional" small town values, I have seen a few where the ML actually follows the FL to the big city as she resumes her career. So maybe Samdalri will be one of those, and that would be a refreshing twist! I'll be happy to publicly eat crow... I mean the local delicacy sea cucumber.
There's nothing so far that would suggest to me that the show is going that route, but as a number of DB commentators have pointed out recently you can't judge a kdrama by its first 8 episodes!

5

@hacja OK, well, if we're actually having this conversation, there truly have been such hints, the most prominent of which is the fact that he went all the way to Seoul to see her final, ill-fated photography show...and he didn't even really keep it a secret, signing his name in giant letters in the guest book to show his support of her and her work--knowing that the show was about to close because of her scandal.

So, there. They may, indeed, go that way!

6

Who is not liking WTS? I'm loving it and as a photographer can't wait to see her just pick up her camera and go out into town and start to photograph the beauty there.

Even though they have written an SML - she is not interested in anyone other than the ML so I don't know why they insist on a 2ML - unless it's a PPL for his car perhaps?

My data for this assertion rests on the fact that the recap comments are, in general, quite negative…and the negative comments are getting more likes than the positive ones! But here today I see that there’s a fan base. We can take over if we so choose, I guess. Mwahahaha? 😇

Ha. I didn't mean that comment to be attention-seeking behavior, but I guess I can't both threaten to storm off, Miss-Piggy-style, and then not expect folks to respond! It's very kind of you to care.

But seriously, you're paused at episode 3 of Matchmakers for a reason. If it ends really, really poorly (which I don't actually expect), I may have to swear off romantic dramas for a bit. Or, as @indyfan suggested in another thread, I might just do a finale freeze on this one. I hear that up to the end of episode 15, it's fine enough, and if I just need to never see the end....maybe that's for the best. @kafiyah-bello I do have a plan to survive!

But what I want, what I really, really WANT, is a big... giant... unreasonably happy, happy ending that blows all reason and narrative sense out of the water. I want an ending like My Dearest got. One that actually doesn't follow the logic of the rest of the show and that offers a wide-eyed optimistic take on what it means to be fated lovers--fate is what you make of it, not something given once and only once!!! The one where that little fantasy sequence of their married life was actually foreshadowing, and not a sad, imaginary scene of something that can never be.

I don't think I'm getting that, but wouldn't it be fantastic??

Oh I'd love for that vision to be true and what we get in the finale... because of my love of the PD and of Rowoon, I watch it regardless, but I don't want to be blindsided by the ending like I was with that other show.

psst!!! You know what I'm probably actually gonna do? It's the opposite of a finale freeze. I'm going to wait until all the presents are unwrapped and everyone's off in their sugar coma, and I'm going to go hide in a corner and...watch the last 10 minutes first. 🥹

Then, if it's fine, I'll watch all three hours right then and there. Folks can have their own Christmas Day without me. I also have tons of MM gifs on the cutting room floor that I've never posted!

If it's not fine...well, they'll also have to have their own Christmas Day without me as I cry in the dark and lick my wounds. I'll do some sort of ritual gif deletion or the like. Ha. Can you imagine 🤣

8

@attiton that sounds like a perfect plan!!!! I've definitely done that before, and it helps. Lol I VIVIDLY remember doing this with the last episode of Do Do when it aired on Thanksgiving day, and I had to take a break to find out the ending 🙃 😅 Hopefully the end of MM will be one more gift for you!!!!

2

@attiton

I use twitter to spoil myself, it's a good way to be prepared :p

2

Wow!! I just watched the first episode of Matchmaker and now I'm reading this. I thought I was safe since it's almost over but looks like I'll wait until tomorrow to read the ending before going further. I often watch the end of the show before committing, or just read what the Beanies say. Always need that happy ending

Life has been busy (yay!), so less progress on dramas this past week.

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract: Remains FLIPPIN' ADORABLE. Bae In-hyuk as a sweet boi in love is the best. 🥰

The Matchmakers: Remains on pause (ep. 3) until I learn how it ends. I need to mentally/emotionally prepare myself for the rest of this journey. 🥹

The Crowned Clown: (through ep. 6) Remains SUPER DUPER stressful, but also excellent. Every other scene is an "oh shizzle" moment. 😬😱

Miscellaneous
● My mom watched and enjoyed Arang and the Magistrate - she loved Lee Joon-gi and liked the ending. I told her how he does all his own stunts, and she was impressed. Yay!!!!
● I watched the first episode of Dragons of Wonderhatch that just showed up on Disney+... I knew nothing about it, but really liked the first ep - it's very dreamy.
● Also watched the first episode of Percy Jackson and the Olympians - I thought it was really good!! Hopefully the rest will be, too! My hopes are higher since Rick Riordan was part of the whole process of adapting, writing, and producing. Fingers crossed!

I absolutely love Jang Dong Yoon here. There is something so adorable about the way he talks and smiles, yet he makes you feel his pain even when he says nothing.
He has gained weight for this role and he actually makes me believe he is a wrestler.
I am no expert in Korean dialects, but I feel his is near perfect.
I loved the first two episodes. It captured the small town vibe very well and the camera work is brilliant.

My Demon : Give us a happy ending show. That’s all I ask. And keep the wild dog gang in the plot.

Death’s Game ready for the next drop!

Welcome to Samdal-ri Episode 5/6 turned out to be much better. I think the self discovery part might be better from this point onwards. Can we not have this stupid love triangle please??!!

My man is Cupid I am confused about the killing. So is the killer killing anyone who talks to FL?? ep 7 had me all confused. And I hate the Cupid roommates. They are awful. Just awful. people who can’t clean up after themselves are the worst.

Derailment (cdrama) :
A time travel parallel universe drama. I was skeptical when I started but by episode 4 I quite liked it. The production is good and camera work and music I like that the FL is strong and determined to find a way back. She was a ‘heiress’ but now is left with 500 yuan in a new world. She picks herself up, is willing to work, is careful with money and is determined to find a way back. Even though the ML is looking out for her and helping her, she really tries to stand on her own feet and doesn’t cling on to him and doesn’t want to leave too many traces.
It’s hilarious when her ‘heiress’ mode acts up and her body language is on point. Liu Hao Cun is truly amazing here. I love her acting. She conveys so much with just her body language.
Lin Yi is supposed to be a bit enigmatic initially but he just looks stiff. But, by episode 4 he gets better and you see more of his emotions by Ep 6.
It’s 30 episodes in total so hopefully there are no draggy parts in the middle. Fingers crossed they resolve the time travel well.

Dropped

Who Ruled the world I lasted till Ep 23. But it started to drag. Too much politics and too little leads time.

Park Marriage contract : Didn’t feel like continuing. It’s too disjointed and I am not emotionally invested in the leads however cute they might be together. I will just watch the gifs on the fan wall.

A good day to be a dog : I saw upto the kiss. I saw the tongue. No reason to continue.

I want to believe that the bad parts are behind us and it can only get better from here. Ep 6 gave me a good reason for her behavior all along and I was happy with how she handled it. It’s still unfair but Atleast I can root for her journey now. I do like when they all are friends and say things to each other comfortably. That’s what I want to see. Finished

Night Has Come was such a solid watch. The ending went full Black Mirror which is a vibe. There’s defs gaps in terms of the rules of the game but could easily overlook those because the story was unique & entertaining - if gaps in logic is a means to a worthwhile end then I don’t mind in the slightest. Acting also 10/10, everyone sold their roles so realistically that watching the cast premiere press conference video felt quite jarring.

Sweet Home 2 Probably the slowest watch I’ve done in AGES/ever but for good reason. Season 1 was great for its own reasons, and season 2 was fantastic for another set of reasons. My only qualms; though I understand why, there wasn’t enough Hyun-su this season and secondly the BewhY track from S1 was so elite so was hoping for something similar this time round too but :(. Anyways posted my rambles in the hangout: https://www.dramabeans.com/2023/12/sweet-home-2-drama-hangout/#comment-4151067

Soundtrack #2 went in for a simple rom-com and it ended up being a deeper introspection into relationships, including a doozy trip down my own memory lane. Ending is weak but I’ve decided to fill in the gaps with imagination to make it work.

Current Watches

Also a little sad because usually at this point every year I’m on a massive Christmas movie binge of all the cringy hallmark and Netflix romcoms, but this year I’ve not even felt a little inclined to start because it doesn’t feel like December is December-ing properly 😭 I think a lot of people in the neighbourhood feel the same way because there’s a distinct lack of yard decorations this year - it is funny to think though that I’ve conditioned my brain into needing little triggers like seeing fairy lights and reindeers around me to indicate that it’s Christmas, and without those cues I’m suddenly feeling lost 😂

My Demon (9/16) 🥰 ❤️ 💕 I am BUZZING 🥰 ❤️ 💕

Tell Me That You Love Me (3/16) and I’m really, really, really loving how SOFT and SUMMER this feels for me right now. It’s like the drama version of soaking in warm summer sunshine

Yu Yu Hakusho just started watching this with my brother because I’ve seen nothing but hype for it on the internet.

The Dog Show (11/14) ngl, this show was the best when it was light and fluffy and fun and cute and now we’re going into angst but like unnecessary angst and tone switch ups and I’m not a fan. This week was a bit of a miss imo and I didn’t love it BUT looking at previews maybe next week might get back on track for me.

Park’s Marriage Contract (10/12) Yeonwoo and Tea are so sweet, and ngl I’m liking the slight depth they’re bringing to the stepmom

Started ep 1 of Gyeongseong Creature My first (drama) love Park Seo-joon is back and I want to throw a party for that alone. I like Han So-hee but haven’t liked anything she’s been in recently - with the exception of the music video for Jungkook’s Seven lol- so fingers crossed this one breaks the curse for me!

Death’s Game akay yeah so cast is goated but script is not, ff-ed through the 4 eps pretty quickly but the last ep with GYJ and LDY was my fav (also Do-hyun needs to chill it with how heartbreakingly good he is at crying scenes 😭)

@mayhemf ’s post convinced me to try My Man Is Cupid , on ep 5 because I’ve largely FF-ed through the non OTP scenes. I like how the usual trope is subverted here and it’s the FL actively pursuing the ML - who also is really cute in his ‘I care about you but am in denial’ flustered-ness.

Am waiting to see what the recap discussion is like for first 4 eps of Like Flowers In The Sand before giving it a go!

Dropped

Welcome to Samdal-ri putting that New Year’s resolution into a bit of early practice - found that my interest and entertainment levels were dropping sharply each week and that it wasn’t worth my time if I wasn’t enjoying it as a whole!

LDY can cry. He really can make our heart ache. And Lee Jae Wook can slap 😅 that it hurts just watching it on screen.

Cupid - lol. No comments.
But yeah they did have some cute moments together.

Live Watches
The Matchmakers: Pins and needles, y’all. Pins and needles. I really need this to end happily, and I need more scenes with Shi-yeol and Du-ri. But these episodes were beautiful, as usual, and it made my heart ache to see Jung-woo and Soon-deok go through a marriage ceremony together. Almost as much as it made me laugh to see how each of the younger Maeng sisters reacted to being in the newlywed rooms with their respective beloveds!

My Demon: Ahhhhh! They are so cute together! “I love insignificant things!” 🤭 I don’t really know what chaebol-sister’s plan was, but I bet Gu-won would love some copies of those photos. I appreciate the creepiness of the reveal of one of our baddies, but I’m disappointed a little that it wasn’t Seok-hoon. The second leads are the only thing that I’m not enjoying as much as I could be in this drama, so I was hoping to remove one from second lead status altogether.

Older Dramas
Twinkling Watermelon: (up to episode 11) This is shaping up to be such a great drama. I find myself very hot or cold with Eun-yoo (I get that she’s in a dark place, but is that a reason to be super flippant with everyone else’s lives too?) but my favorite times are when she’s struggling with her growing feelings for a person she assumes is an old man! Cheong-ah is obviously amazing, and I love the bromance too, despite (and maybe a little because of) it’s innate immaturity.

Park's Contract, 8eps
It is cute and simple and I liked Bae Inhyuk in biege. 😊 Though sometimes it feels that even 12 episodes is too many 😅 - that curling and ice cream kiss were rather random even for my fangirl heart.
I still want to hope that Evil Step Mom actually is not evil, especially when it looks that Grandpa is much more sinister (and less loving) now. But I'm afraid the show will not go there.

Demon, 8eps
The humour is one of the major pulls for me and the gangsters again delivered... with their hospital visit and 5m distance measurement. 😄
I also like the quiet moments between the leads (they so obviously care for each other) and I wonder what happens now when Guwon is sort of back to being human.

Samdal-ri
Sometimes I'm shaking my head at the antics of the 5 when they are together, they behave more like teenagers than 30+ adults. But then I remember how our high school reunions look like. 😁
Episode 6 was good, with Samdal facing Weasel Assistant... and her fears of being the actual cause of the suicidal attempt... (even if I still have difficulties to believe that NOBODY stood by Samdal).
I'm also somehow interested in Incompetent Ex-husband... and I love Hayul. ❤️

Hyoshim
I was again on the verge of dropping it, but it seems that Hyoshim will FINALLY move out.
Staying also for Taehee and Mirim.

Tell Me That You Love Me
I like it, but I also have to admit that Twinkling Watermelon and especially jdrama Silent had me better (and deeper) connected - here I actually feel much more connected to Friend and his deaf wife than to the main couple (even if I like them and wish them well). Friend and Brother love line is disappointing and Brother was sooo ruuude to Main Couple, that was not like him. On the other hand, I quite like Second Female Lead so far. The best scenes are the dinner times with the main couple, the friend and his deaf wife... and it reminds me of my early days when I was meeting the family of my husband and wasn't able to speak the language yet. Well done.

Dog Day
I still haven't watched episode 10...

Soundtrack 2
It was quite good... but the last 5 minutes.

I also watched 5 episodes of Journey To Love, but then I heard some spoilers about the ending 😬 and switched to Derailment - only 2 episodes in, but I'm curious enough to continue, are we in parallel worlds or a computer game?

Wait, you too with Samdal-ri!! Yay! I don't think any of us are expecting great shakes--but actually I sort of hold out hope that we could think of it as a "really short weekender," and eps 1-5 were the "Character Building" episodes, and now we can really get to the plot? That's probably optimistic, but I want to see these characters shine. I quite like all the sisters, frankly.

I'm so sorry to hear that Soundtrack #2 ended poorly--that seems to be a consensus. The only part of #1 that I loved WAS the ending. Maybe Soundtrack #3 will have both good exposition AND a great finale :)

Oooh, I like the mini-weekender idea!
Let's hope they will now focus on the sisters as well. 🙂

Soundtrack 2 was actually quite good, the leads were in love, but not so compatible (I think FL would actually better fit with SML). However, they finally started communicating and making effort and there was a chance they would make their relationship work in a mature way - aware of they differences... but the ending went against all that. A pity.

Tell Me That You Love Me - What can't I say about this. This is one drama that I don't want anyone who doesn't love it to watch. It is proving to be amongst the one dramas I'll recommend only to people who know good drama.
The disappointment written on Mo-eun's father's face, however unpalatable to watch, was relatable and kinda valid. I kind of liked that they let it play out that way. I hope they can use this medium to address a valid concern of concerned family members like Mo-eun's minus Mo-dam. I could understand the father's reaction but not his.

Happiness Battle - I finally completed this. I don't know how Jang Mi-ho lost common sense and went into the car with Mr. Kang.

Welcome To Samdalri EP 3&4 - I knew the silence of her mom was killing Sam-dal. I thought her mom was being considerate of Sam-dal by not asking questions especially after she had read the articles online. I thought same about Yong-pil and the other 3 guys. They had, just like her mom, read the articles but refrained from asking her questions out of consideration to her, to not hurt her feelings. When Sam-dal broke down and blasted the guys as to the way they were being careful around her, it changed the perspective of how I perceived their consideration. It was hurting her so much that the people she wants to explain herself to do not even want to hear her tell her side of the story.

Wow, if I don't like Tell Me That You Love Me...I guess I'll know I'm a drama philistine!! I've not started, nor am I likely to--so I guess we'll never really know.

I also agree about Sam-dal's breakdown in the street. It changed a bit how I was looking at the drama--and then when she repeated those same complaints about her so-called friends in Seoul, it became clear that this was her baggage, and not anything that was actually going on in the moment. Not bad, little drama. Not bad!

With Welcome to Samdalri: Her breakdown was interesting since that perspective would never cross my mind. My stance would have been that it's a nonquestion. That it was some sort of misunderstanding and that she wasn't the perpetrator, so why interrogate her. After that breakdown, I realized she wanted her loved ones to hear her explanation that was so ignored by everyone else - that she was innocent in an objective sense and not because of their personal attachment to her.

I was busy so and i had to google name of lot of shows and so there is some possibility of some show getting harsh views from my side. If possible i'll do complete analysis one more time and bring on top who deserve it and have the merit.

JAPAN - Japan completely took it upon to do romance with cheating and cuckolding in 2023 - horny as chugging booze to lose yourself. Yet had some potential good dramas - not as good as 2021-2022.

TAIWAN - 2023 taiwan had one of the better stories but lack of translation caused not much viewership and so can't say much but there 2 good dramas that are chosen.

KOREA - 2023 was extreme - some potential dramas and an attempt moving from same copy-paste which was great resisted by overly doing the copy-paste.

China - Better social impact year - more action too.

Thailand 0 more or less usual but in between did well.

Soundtrack #2 (Series review)
It was cute to see Noh Sang Hyun on the small screen again after Behind Every Star. Yeah, that’s it.

The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract (Episode 7-8) - Mood: D+
Yikes, despite the best efforts by both Awesome Secretary and Marvellous Sa Wol (I bellowed in laughter seeing her just go for the kiss in the dark), the story insists on dragging itself down with noble idiocy and cringe-inducing villainy. Also, I feel a bit sad for Yoo Seon Ho: Tae Min has done nearly nothing all show long and Sung Pyo feels more like a lead to me?

Welcome to Samdal-ri (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D
Huh, as though the power abuse plot device wasn’t bad enough on its own, they decided to expand on it with plagiarism? It boggles me as to why the writer ever thought this arc needed development? And then of course, there’s bad blood between the parents which likely caused the breakup, mother has some terminal illness, annoying reporter, love triangle, that sucks.

My Man Is Cupid (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D
Whatever little levity the show had with the senior cop calling Sang Hyuk hyung and the incredulous reactions from the rest of the cops was quickly overshadowed by the love triangle. Also, how many people must die before the cops realise there is some information leak regarding the witnesses? All this talk about the perfect cover-up makes me think the culprit is a cop.

A Good Day to Be a Dog (Episode 11) - Mood: D
So amnesia, huh. But the bigger tragedy is that Yul didn’t even get one second of screen time in this episode! And while it’s important to develop what is now arguably the main plot now, there was so much repetition and filler in the past life scenes (not to mention the agonising scheduling) that I was left brooding about the onslaught of past lives in this batch of dramas.

My Demon (Episode 7-8) - Mood: D-
Now, the story is just spiralling downwards: there’s a difference between the angst being generated by external factors vs it being generated by internal troubles and the writing’s demonstrating exactly what not to do when building tension. Sure, so much beauty to appreciate in that kiss, but I’m kind of tired knowing it’s filler dating scenes and killer nonsense coming up?

WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI (Ep 5-6) We get a good episode about Samdal’s four friends. Yong-Pil and Sang-do both had romantic feelings for her since they were young but since they were shy and she was bold nothing truly happened. I liked that Samdal put Yong Pil in his place about “knowing” her when she changed so much in the last 8 years (4 boyfriends; 10x salary). But then again, it did not stop the friends for sticking up for her against the reporter. But then the series reverts Samdal back to a scared little girl which is totally opposite her successful career personality. I got the eerie feeling that Yong Pil wants Samdal to return to Jeju after giving up her dream career so she will be more dependent upon him (a subterfuge to get her back in his arms). To be perfectly honest, Sang-do is probably more the gentlemen and a better fit for Samdal than Yong Pil. But that story line will never happen, just because.

Ha-Yul has the most common sense in the entire show. She does not the village because of the superstitious and gossipy elders who pity her because her father died young. She was right: it was no one fault when his time was up (which probably will foreshadow the resolution of the hatred of Sang-Tae toward Mi-ja.)

This week story ended very flat with the hard sell that Yong Pil still pines for Samdal (but he did nothing to change that for 8 long years). She moved on; he did not. His constant appearances and hovering around her appear noble but he has a clear ulterior motive. At this point, Samdal giving up, returning to the village and getting back with Yong-Pil would be the “failure” that she dreaded her entire life. The real failure would be to give up her photography career.

TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME (Ep 7-8) I like that the show uses childhood flashbacks like Hide N Seek to show the lasting impressions on Jinwoo’s personality. Emotionally, he liked being alone but at the same time he wanted to be found. This show has great character maturity and communication skills. The first seven minutes of Episode 8 were more masterful “showing and not telling” the story. JW and SK were a very cute campus couple. You could tell the trust and communication (even the silent moments) was real. The show continues to hit the mark that communication takes many forms: language, signs, body language, written words and silence. There is also a shadow theme that one has to confront their problems: the high school bully victim standing up to fight his abuser is another rarity in k-dramas but when I was growing up, it was the only way to earn respect and stop bully behavior.

There were so many good couple moments: SK and JW in college; Modam and Ji-Yu trying to communicate their feelings; Ki-Hyun and So-Hee’s lovely marital life; and the end ME and JW reaffirming their connection.

A GOOD DAY TO BE A DOG (Ep. 11) The Mountain God plays all his cards and power to emotionally abuse Hae-Na’s family. I thought the worst for uncle last episode, but...

... the twist to show that the curse is reversible was cruel. The Joseon era filler was not engaging; BG’s petty revenge on SW and HN is nonsensical.

Last week I wondered “I would rather have the story continue with the "aftereffects" of breaking the dog curse (for example if some dog traits are now hard wired into her personality and actions.)” Well, we got a taste of that with uncle’s transformation. It seems like a wasted comic opportunity for the leads such as the couple walking down the street and suddenly HN runs after a car or as a homage to Butt Touch, HN picks up puppies and sniffs their butts.

I think all the flashbacks and playing up the curse story over the romance is a way the producers are trying to keep the audience because of the network limitations and scheduling issues. I don’t think it is working.

Kim Yoo-jung is my wife’s very favorite K-drama actress and that means that I am having to pause watching MY DEMON until her eyes adjust sufficiently to read subtitles comfortably again (the second cataract surgery was just a few days ago). THE MATCHMAKERS and THE STORY OF PARK’S MARRIAGE CONTRACT are also on hold for the same reason. Which is a shame because all three of these are good shows.

Shin Hye-sun is my very favorite K-drama actress and so I am not pausing my watch of WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI. And, while my wife has a quite surprising tolerance for battle scenes, I am also not pausing my watch of THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR.

Because much of what my wife normally watches is not presently available to her, I went ahead with a (temporary) subscription to Disney+. She finally got to see THE MANDALORIAN, binge watched the whole thing and loved it. My wife will be able to see the live action versions of ALADDIN and MULAN and is really enjoying THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES. A temporary subscription is (somewhat) worth it but I can officially report (indignantly) that most of the Kdramas which Disney picked up are STILL not available in the US. There are good reasons why I am not a fan of the Disney Corporation.

My very favorite show right now continues to be the daily UNPREDICTABLE FAMILY. The writer is a genius. Is there such a thing as a gentle melo comedy romance? This past week saw a number of situations which would have been painful to watch in other dramas and there were moments of angst, as an old misunderstanding continued to do its damage, but somehow the show handled these in such a way that we did not end up hating the characters- we can even still like them and in fact cheer for all of them. The painful things were not so painful simply because they were not portrayed in an over-the-top fashion but rather as perfectly understandable and all too human. There are also still scenes which bring a smile to your face. This show maintains its balance and continues to draw us further in. I am looking forward to next week when half-brothers and sisters will begin to meet each other.

Our weekender, LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE, is now at its exact midpoint. The tone has shifted considerably from where it was to something more in line with the title, although we still have a long way to go. There were positive things beginning to happen but, at the same time, I still viscerally dislike some of the characters, like the moms of both our FL and our 2ML, to name just two. The concept of the show is a good one and circumstances beyond the control of the writer plagued the first half, but the show may finally be getting its footing despite a number of flawed characters- ratings are starting to tick up for a reason.
Mary is right about Gwan-hee on SINGLES INFERNO 3. But I wonder how long this can hold up? His situation may blow up next week.

Please let us know if/when we can go back to LYOL and see Ha Joon in all his glory again without looking at him all askance for even agreeing to inhabit the character of Tae-ho!!

Apart from the one actor substitution, though, I don't know of other things plaguing the first half of LYOL--what's been going on?

reply

Required fields are marked *

I was referring to the one actor being ill and then dying. His part was critical to the original plot. His situation forced a major change in the plotlines after many of the early scripts had been completed but then had to be altered, because the plot path by which Tae-min is split away from Hyo-shim so that she can end up with Tae-ho had to change a great deal. You may have noticed that the earlier scenes where the Anchor Lady appeared were just sort of jammed into the story with no organic relationship to the rest of the story? Only now is her story becoming more intertwined with the rest. The scene where she stormed into TS Fitness (with damn good reason) marked the first time that her character actually touched the lives of the broader cast.

This also explains why the character of the Chairman has been altered twice.

Hopefully the dust from the alterations has finally settled and the show can now proceed smoothly.

UF - The half siblings reunion is going to be fun.

I want to see Eun Ho's reaction about Ha Young being obsessed with his step brother and bullying his dongsaeng. He's a saint, so he probably won't get mad at her. But their relationship is going to become so awkward...

They say Eun Ho and Sun Woo are only 1 year apart, they can't be half brothers, right? no one is talking about that, I'm confused.

I also want to see Eun Ha and her new sis living together. That would be crazy fun. I don't think it'll actually happen, but thinking about it makes me smile.

The age difference between Sun-Woo and Eun-hyeok has to be at least four years and more likely five- I am thinking that somewhere something was mis-translated.

And Eun-hyeok is not Sun-woo's stepbrother but rather his half-brother sharing the same biological mother. This will, by itself, create a situation. I have said before that this show must have started out as a thought experiment: How could we create the most complicated and confusing family tree in Korea?

No, I mean, the show is acting like all of them are half siblings but they also said that Sun Woo and Eun Hyuk are only one year apart. That doesn't make sense, and that's why I think they're more like "step brothers". They can't have the same mom. Or someone said the wrong ages? I'm not sure. I thought Sun Woo was 30.

If they really are half brothers then the love square is even more awkward than I thought. Hahaha.

They're doing a great job with the experiment.

I have been under the impression that Eun-hyuk is about 33 or 34 years old. His sister is more like 35 or 36 years old which explains why she retained some memories of her birth mother.

1

I was convinced he was 31. Haha.
Thank you for explaining.

1

However, I too once again heard that "one year apart" reference repeated this week. It does not square with the picture their mom carries around, clearly showing Eun Hyak was about 2 to 3 years old when he was separated from his birth mother. The only way for Sun Woo to be only a year younger than him would be if Sun Woo had already been born at the time the picture was taken. The only way this works is if Sun Woo actually has another birth mother. So they would indeed be stepbrothers if that was the case. But there has been no hint of that other mother so far in this show.

2

The mom made it clear this week that the for kids are her blood. So at this point, I think the writers are just confused. They're having a hard time trying to keep track of everything, haha.

FINISHED:

Now that my Christmas baking and jam-making are all done, I'm settling in for 3 days of just catching up on both sleep and K-Dramas.

1. MYSTIC POP-UP BAR - This was okay and one of the K-Dramas I have seen that handles reincarnation tropes quite well. I did like the ending - it was quite fitting for the 3 lead characters as family. Unlike some K-Drama endings, this one feels like the characters EARNED it within the story.

ONGOING:

1. MY DEMON - Aaaaah! Ms. Wireless Charger and Mr Pokemon never fail to amuse as a dynamic duo. Marital bickering and That Kiss made this week's episodes awesome!

2. WELCOME TO SAMDAL-RI - The pacing is still off. And we need the OTP to begin their romance, not a love triangle to form. But I will keep watching anyway.

JUST STARTED:

1. GYEONGSEONG CREATURE - Are the film reviewers watching the same drama as me? I'm on to episode 2 and so far it's fine. Park Seo-Joon and Han So-Hee are just fine starring opposite each other. There isn't bags of chemistry but is still works fine, especially since there's no romance on the horizon.

2. I also will be resuming W: TWO WORLDS soon. Hoping to finish it over the long Christmas weekend.

Your comments on The Creature Flick are probably as damning as any other negative review would be for me...I'm not sure I want to invest time in something where PSJ does "fine" and his co-star is "just fine."

If I were more into zombies and hell-demons-from-actual-hell-and-not-hottie-Song-Kang-"hell" there'd be something else to look forward to here...but if there's no spark between the lead couple. Feh. I see that the Beanies above also basically agree. So double feh.

*Shrug* To me nowadays, "fine" is worth watching as popcorn entertainment as part of leaving my brain at the door. Not every supernatural thriller/drama can be as awesome as KINGDOM.

I will say though that I so like shows about demons, zombies etc and so far the glimpses of the creatures in the series have appeared in episode 2 so I'm happy with that because too often we only see creatures/monsters at the end and it's like: That's it? That's the scary monster?

Tell Me That You Love Me I'm only interested in Jin-Woo and Seo-Kyung's story. It looks they really need closure about what happened in the past. I like to see them communicating, how smooth it is and how it's about everything and not only him being deaf. I could have liked the main couple but Shin Hyun-Bin is so bring on screen...

The Matchmakers The last 2 episodes were great with our different couples finally getting married! The last one will be our main couple I hope.

Like Flowers in Sand I didn't specially like or dislike it. There were too many characters I don't really care about... And why a murder?!?

A Good Day to Be a Dog The past story is so boring... This drama has not only an issue with its schedule but writing and acting too.

Welcome to Samdal-ri I think it's becoming a drama I watch only for JCW...

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract The present to fix the past? It sounds weird... The past story is not really interesting neither. I wish to see Yeon-Woo handling her modern life and the couple, the rest...

My Demon It's fun and pretty. Song Kang is quite convincing as a puppy in love more than a dangerous demon.

Maestra: Strings of Truth I watch the first 2 episodes and I'm not sure... I just want classical music.

Soundtrack #2 Not really better than the first one.

Gyeongseong Creature I want to try it!

Death's Game A good casting but in a poor story...

My Man is Cupid Dramabeans will stop ignoring this mess by the end!

Sigh. Does anyone remember a romance kdrama that didn’t feature a serial killer?! Anyone?! I’m sure there’s one but my mind is overwhelmed and blank right now. They really, really, like REALLY need to relegate serial killers back to its own genre and stop inserting that nonsense into romantic genre.

When the Weather is Fine

Finished. Although writing and directing were consistently good, it was a show that became harder and harder for me to watch, and I confess that Lee Jae Wook's character was the only reason I finished it. That good, honest, simple boy needed his happy ending. And to a girl who knew his worth. It was so sweet and cute that he had looked after all the town's people the whole series, and everybody helped him in the end.

There were 2 things that really angered me about PMY's character.
One, that she so cruelly and relentlessly teased SKJ's character because of his diary, and how long he had loved her.
And two, when she so dismissively rejected KYD's confession and later as dismissively told him that she knows he hadn't love her for too long because she knows the eyes of a person who has. Who are you to judge another person's heart. Especially the boy who singlehandedly saved you from being an outcast after that scandal. And confessed to you immediately after he saw you again after years. I wasn't on his side, but I was very angry with how she treated him.

These and many other clues told me that she is an extremely self-centered and selfish person, which from the writing point of view was very consistent and well-done, but I'm glad I had Lee Jae Wook's character to look forward to, because I couldn't root for her.

Behind Your Touch

Finished. The writing of the show was terrible. It was like it was written by a 10 year old child. Was there not even one cctv camera in the whole building of a national assemblyman's office?? This was just one of the ridiculous plotholes.

The male lead, and the cops were horribly bad at their jobs. As was mentioned by a character: "Being this incompetent at being a cop is in itself a crime!"

The body count was atrocious. And the fact that each one of them was a person who we were made to know/like/root for made the show progressively more infuriating.

BUT! (pun intended!) To make up for all that, the directing and the characterizations were amazing! It was such a treat to slowly know and care for so many side characters despite none of them being perfectly good and sweet people. It was so easy to watch when you like so many characters, even though you want to bang your head on the table with that writing! Of course that same plus point, made the body count that much more horrible. (I can't help sliding a jibe in here at Heartbeat which its too many unlikeable characters was one of the reasons I dropped it)

I don't know what I'm going to watch next. I really liked Twinkling Watermelon's first episode, but it somehow didn't stay in my mind enough to remember to play ep 2... I haven't recovered from Brave Citizen yet to try My Lovely Boxer... I'm waiting for Park's Marriage Contract to finish before trying it... Maybe I should just rewatch old favorites until I'm revived again!

Current/recent:

The Matchmakers: The most well-plotted, well-written, well-acted show of 2023. The complex story and multiple narrative threads have been so neatly woven and so nearly drawn together that a resolution worthy of the narrative, whatever that may be, actually seems plausible. It’s amazing to have gotten through episode 15 and have the ending feel entirely unpredictable, leaving open possibilities of either a happy-ever-after or a not-so-much that would be equally well-supported by what the show has built. I can’t guess which way all these strands will be wound up in the end. I’m hoping for the OTP to end up together and also willing to accept that if we don’t get that, the show will not in any way be cheating us. Monday, come sooner!

My Demon: That was a fine realization/admission of feelings and kiss, but adding the sprinkler was too much. Demon is rapidly turning into a frail human - now what will they do for another 4 weeks? Once again saving both episodes for tonight, because the cliffhangers have been killers.

Like Flowers In Sand: Hmmm, that was a mysterious and intriguing start - despite the inevitable murder subplot already rearing its tired, disheveled head. I can’t see any reason to give a fig about the FL yet, but Jang Dong-yoon’s ML is enough of an ennui-plagued yet down-to-earth oddball that I’d stay around for a while to see how his life goes.

My Man Is Cupid: This show is terrible. I have no idea what’s going on. Of course I’ll keep watching!

Soundtrack #2: Someone really looked at the ending of Not Others and said, “yup, sounds about right, let’s go with that”? Is not growing, not learning, and gaining some self-awareness but doing nothing with it a new trope? This was so promising and so sweet through episodes 1-5 that the ending leaves even more of a sour taste.

Death’s Game: Saving most of it for holiday downtime. I can’t say this show is good, but it sure is a wild ride.

Park’s Marriage Contract: Dropped. The leads are super cute but don't have an iota of common sense between them, and they can’t make up for the annoying corporate stuff and incoherent plot. To be fair, this show did advertise from the start that the chaebol power struggle was going to be a major element but even that part doesn’t make much sense.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Time to admit to myself that I’ve dropped this. I hear there was a kiss; maybe I’ll go back and watch that.

Older shows: LOL, still no time - but if my current watches keep spinning out and crashing into the sidewalls, I’ll have plenty of time slots to fill.

So, my 2023 of kdrama, for better or for worse is full of missed expectations. (1) Almost all dramas of this year that I liked are shows I started to watch without excitement. Mostly because at first I didn’t like the genre, the main casts or the synopsis, but surprisingly the stories gone beyond my expectation its crushing my prejudice (Call it Love, Moving, Twinkling Watermelon, Revenant). On other side most of dramas that I eagerly waited for ended up being (2) just mediocre (A Time Called You, Dr. Romantic S3, Daily Dose of Sunshine, Castaway Diva) or (3) Tad dissapointing (Interest of Love, D. P. S2, Worst of Evil).

I think too many dramas were out in 2023 I couldn’t keep up despite being able to watch so many shows. And as kdramas started to gain more global attention and have higher budget they capable to upgrading so much in picture quality and CGI, but why do I feel the scripts quality were declining? They focus so much about how it looks on the screen (which is important) but the scripts (which at leats for me, the most important thing about a drama) appear not as significant or being taken care so much less than the visual. Anyway, I hope I am meaningfully busy enough to the point I’ll watch so much less drama but a lot more good shows in 2024.

Tell Me That You Love Me : I think the pd has a thing with architecture because I remember on how much I love Woong’s house on Our Beloved Summer and I do feel the same with JW‘s and ME’s on this show. For the show itself, it is a very little bit too slow for me, but so far it’s good. I love how the FL never treated the ML as someone with disablity. She is capable of showing empathy without pity toward him and the relationship she offers whether it is friendship or romantic are genuine and come out naturally. And despite the ML awareness of how his disability could be inconvenience for others, he doesn’t shut himself from other people and socializing. He might be introverted and so careful on creating relations but he is not the kind of person who throw himself a pity party or blaming the world and built a wall after being misunderstood because of his deafness. He understand the burden he has to bear and make peace about it. And, I never know Jung Woo Sung has such a beautiful smile. When he smiles while playing those piano I wonder how much it takes for Shin Hyun Been to keep her heart in its place. Also, since FL and Yo Han definitely will be in friendzone forever, may I take him?

Welcome to Salmdari : I’ll give this a 7 so far. It’s okay but not yet gripping. I still see some potential it probably could go so much better in the future especially with the main leads reconciliation that hasn’t take off yet and possible romance stories of the older and younger sister.

Good Day to be A Dog : it’s a light watch. Something that just passing by without needed to be think of too much. I think the best part of the show is Yul. This teenanger and the vet are the only adults in this show...

Maestra : I don’t like the makjang premise and only give it a try because of Lee Young Ae. A calliber actor like her worth a try and yes she isn’t dissapointing and so does the show. Though the “loyal husband” affair plot is definitely overused in drama world, I find myself approving this trope presents in this show. Its a sneaky way of making the male lead (LMS) more desirable despite his obsessiveness toward FL. And to be honest that guy is charming and as hot as the color of his flag. The mistress? She is as loud as the trumpet she blows. I hope the concert master is a harworking and talented good person and not the one who tampered the brake.

Soundtrack 2 : In short, I understand why they broke up. It’s not the matter of good or bad character, it just that they are different. I personally don’t think the differences are bridgeable because they stand at the outer end of different spectrum. The Guy is an idealist that are very open and risk taker. The Girl is a realist, planner and calculative. Honestly, I think it’s more realistic if the ending is they go on they separate ways.

Night Has Come : I couldn’t help but to compare this with another survival high school drama which is Duty After School. Despite of its plotholes I think NHS is a much more clever and neater drama than DAS. Also if the ending of DAS was a bad ending, NHS is a dark one. Overall, it’s enjoyable.

And finally, I wish u Beanies early Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May 2024 become a better year more than the years before 🎆

A Journey To Love ep 27-40 oh my goodness so much has happened. Everything has been turned upside down. Regardless of everything that went down, I still love this show. It has been hints numeroustimes that it may not be a sweet ending for everyone. I get why it has to be this way. I love all of the main characters and some of the supporting characters. I appreciate the care that was given to the character development of key individuals that I learned to love. This is only one of the few shows that as soon as it ended, I wanted to rewatch and join the characters in their journey. ❤️😭💝

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract ep7-8 Confessions, noble idiocy, corporate trouble and kisses. I love all the scenes between our OTP and their besties. I just love Bae In Hyuk and Lee Se Young in this. I am not sure though who is the big bad, I think it is still his stepmom. Isn't it?

My Demon ep7-8 Gu Won's security in Sunwol is so lax. Anyone can just come in and snoop around. I still love this show despite some quibbles. Similar trajectory story-wise with TSPMC. This show just has better flow to the story.

Live Your Own Lifeep 24-25 skipped this week

The Matchmakers ep 14-15 the shenanigans before the triple wedding was just as fun. I enjoyed the manuevering behind the scenes to make sure this event is a success. One episode to go.

My Happy Marriage ep 5-12 when is season 2 for this show? Or at least sequel to the live action movie. I need to know what will happen to Kiyoka and Miyo.

I am okay with how it ended. For me the main two survived to make sense of that last scene with Chu Yue and the boy. I am not happy with LTG's character growth though. I felt YY deserved better. I would've liked it also if it was shown that her husband was considerate of her.

Oh yeah this show has the choose your ending aspect. SPOILER ALERT for viewers who haven't seen the ending yet:

For me, they definitely died. Ruyi had enough time after what happened to NYZ to look after him if he was only injured. NYZ pretty much realized he's on his last breaths when the first spear hit him. Chu Yue too was in that scene somewhat in an afterlife because she hasn't even met Sun lang, Yuan Lu and Qian zhao to reminisce about them and the best person to do that should've been Yang Ying. I actually don't mind their deaths, it's the villain who is so out of place that the deaths were no longer impactful. The ending is both good and bad and its equally ambiguous. The good part is you can choose, the bad one is you're never certain.

Your version is okay too. Its just a matter of how to interpret that last scenes.
For me, this two have cheated death and even faked their deaths in the past. So it is still within a realm of possibility for them to survive and choose to live away from it all.

3

Yeah that's reasonable too. Considering they began their journey exactly this way the show may want to come full circle.

3

I think ambiguity of the ending works best for people like me who are fine with either resolution... but for everyone else it was understandably a hard blow.

Agree that cdramas in general should stop forcing such "artsy" OEs onto pretty much every plot these days, it gets old really fast. The increasing with each single case like that backlash says it all. Is it too much to hope that writers will eventually get the memo?

2

@gikata I like open ending when they have a life goes on kind of indication, not when the writer can't decide between life and death. That seems to be the growing trend in c fantasy dramas these days sadly and I feel it's mostly done to absolve fan rage.

1

Fair point.

Thing is, such "calming" tactic doesn't really work, does it? I feel like a clear SE would've created less controversy here. They should think about other solutions before it's too late.

2

@jillian, @gikata,
Did Uncle Ding Hui from Heaven's Path die, too, or am I imagining it? If he didn't, that would have changed the ending for me.

1

I am re-watching the show from the beginning, but I didn't care for the ending with Chu Yue. She did not impact me as much as Yang Ying.

The Matchmakers: This is the rare show that manages to keep the story moving while also giving all the key characters and relationships time to develop and grow. It's quite well done and I'm looking forward to the final episode. On a totally random note, is the character of Jung Woo reading as autistic to anyone else? Because if he was a student in one of my classes, I'd absolutely be checking to see if he had a special accommodations form.

My Demon: Ridiculously trope-y, but in a fun, self-aware way. Why yes, I do occasionally just want to bask in over-the-top neo-80's styling.

My Demon: Paused at the end of episode 7. I want to like this and there are many likable bits, but am having trouble getting into it. May pick it up later Want to comment that Gu-won took a whole bunch of useless crap to Do-hee's apartment, but not the important demon manual. *facepalm*

Story of Park's Marriage Contract: TWO Dol-swes. Makes me want a robot vac. It really reminds me of the older days of watching kdrama rom-coms but at a faster pace. Hits the emotional and humorous notes well. I also love the teamwork between the characters. The stepmother's scenes are finally interesting and watchable. I am curious as to what the connection is supposed to be between the fates of the present day and Old Joseon.

Matchmakers: Where the penultimate episode ends up being one of the best episodes in a series full of great episodes. We have emotional moments and high-stakes hijinx! The excitement of pulling off a triple wedding with only one of the scheduled pairs present and gaslighting all the attendees using the first night was incredible. Also the whole thing was so beautifully shot. The choice to use only instrumentals was a great one. I love the BGM in this series.

Welcome to Samdalri: Progress! Sam-dal's confrontation with liar liar pants on fire Eun-joo where she was relieved of her guilt regarding the suicide attempt and where she was pretty much "go and take the designs and bf. don't need either of them" was pretty badass.

Live your own life: Only watching it for Mirim and Hyo-jun. Frustrated with how everyone became more frustrating as we progress since I'm sure the final episode of a weekend family drama is pretty much required to end in a we're-a-harmonious-family note.

Ancient Detective: C-drama. Finished! Loved it. Actors, costumes, fight scenes, costumes, plot, comedy - all incredible! Cliffhanger of an ending with no season 2, but also a good stopping point. I think it was really obvious what the reveal about the ML's identity was going to be, but the actual reveal was surprising in how all the clues and threads along the way tied together

Marriage Not Dating👰❌👫(13/16): Gosh episode 12 was frustrating.
Episode 11 ended with Yeo-Reum hugging Jang-Mi. Red flag because Jang-Mi does not want him or his skin ship at that time.😒 Bigger red flag because he did so on purpose in front of her mother-in-law, ’because he likes her’. Ah yes dude, your selfish desperation will certainly sway her.🙄 Hugest red flag because he gets to literally walk away without any repercussions and starts living out his dreams.😠

Jang-Mi on the other hand…whether her parents, in-laws, love interests, friends or foes are fighting her or each other, directly or indirectly the blame and consequences are placed entirely on her.🤨 I think I am furious about this because lately I notice it often in fiction. Love really is not enough to start a relationship, guys! And Yeo-Reum does not even have that!😤

So many Christmas parties, concerts in real life and online, errands, Christmas markets – lovely, but they leave little time to watch and even less to write… I didn’t even get around to count my (very many) beans for 2023 yet.
Finished season 2 of Sweet Home and liked it a lot, especially the ending that makes me really look forward to S3.
Finished Moon In The Day which, as we all know, is not that good, but I really loved the sad but hopeful ending! Great writing there (lots and lots of plot holes before 😉).
I’m behind on Matchmakers, My Demon and Welcome to Samdalri.
Am watching Tell Me That You Love Me mainly for the fun 2nd couple and Johan when he works – and the new OST by Seventeen’s Seungkwan (so far, it’s only been used when they kiss, so exactly two short times 😊). The main couple are a bit too introspective for me; and a lot of unspoken conversations and intense gazes do not make for a great relationship IRL.
Soundtrack #2 is also similar to Our Beloved Summer, the story is almost the same, but I do really understand and like the tough FL here. This was almost too short!
I had been waiting for Maestra for some time because I often listen to classical concerts and opera. The orchestra aspects are fine, dramatized of course. Story wise, this is going to be makjang, isn’t it? I’m betting on Lee Ru Na being Cha Se Eum’s secret daughter…
Flower In The Sand started out really good, too!

The Matchmakers: Planning to watch the last three episodes together … busy avoiding spoilers and hoping for the best.

Park's Marriage Contract: On one hand, the bad guys and their bad deeds are multiplying. On the other, Yeon-woo and Tae-ha overcame his brief bout of noble idiocy and are just so cute together. I hope they'll team up to vanquish their enemies past and present, and then give us some fan-service sweetness that lasts longer than a minute at the end of Ep. 12.

Welcome to Samdal-ri: Samdal confronting her ex and former mentee was a welcome development. Yay for loyal friends. Nay for stereotypical gossipy villagers and potential love triangle.

My Uncanny Destiny: Finished and what a ride. I appreciate a show that isn't afraid to push boundaries and be a bit -- OK, a lot -- audacious. Big budget and big names? No. But it definitely had a go-big-or-go-home attitude and navigated the line between satire and sincerity.

What I'm watching:

_ The Matchmakers (15/16). This week's episodes have been really good, so I hope the ending doesn't disappoint us. If it sticks the landing, this will be one of my favorite fussion sageuks ever.

_ Park's show (8/12): I think the same I have been saying these days. It's not so good, it invents nothing, but the two couples are a joy to watch (the chemistry!). The four main actors are doing a good job.

_ C-drama Shining for one thing (1/24). I have started this C-drama which was in my long list. The reviews are good and it's about time travelling and second chances, so there I go. It seems that the soundtrack will be very nice too.

What I have finished:

_ Sweet Home 2. It's not bad, it's different. There are things I like (more characters, open air, it's not boring...) and things I don't (some over the top scenes, Oh Jung-se's character...).

Merry Christmas to all my dear beanies. It's a pleasure to be here with you🎄

Keeping it short and sweet this week... I've got cookies to bake!

COMPLETED
Soundtrack #2
It was deeper than #1, and I appreciated that. The music and cinematography are wonderful, plus a terrific cast. The ending was perplexing though and seemed to make moot the entire learning journey for our ML/FL. There must be an explanation that either got lost in translation or inadvertently cut. Maybe they ran out of time? Still, I hope they go for Soundtrack #3.

STILL LIVE WATCHING
The Matchmakers
Episodes 14-15 were so good! Despite the ep 16 preview, I have complete faith (ok, 99.9% faith) that our writer-nim will make all of our Christmas wishes come true by wrapping up the gift of this drama with a big, beautiful, sparkly, feel-good bow. 🎁

The Story of Park's Marriage Contract
I'm still here for the adorable lead couples and the gorgeous fashion designs.

My Demon
Ok, episode 9 was a bummer. They'd better get this ship back on course tonight.

DABBLING
A Journey to Love (C-Drama)
I will have more to say about this after the holidays.

STARTING NEXT WEEK
Like Flowers in Sand
Looking forward to this based on all the beanie raves.

ON HOLD -- MAYBE (thanks to @attiton's comments about episode 6)
Welcome to Samdal-ri
I'm up to episode 5 and liking it more. However it's weirdly a bit of a slog to get through each episode. Right now I have zero interest in watching it, so I'm putting it on hold.

Wishing you all an amazing final week of 2023!

We need this for K-dramas: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/23/upshot/hallmark-lifetime-christmas.html. The graphics alone are PhD level. I can think of a few veteran Beanies who could do this style of analysis with out breaking a sweat!
As disappointing as the newest Miyazaki The Annoying Boy & the Heron was, is how wonderful Koreda's Monster is. As is typical of his work the film, as told from three different perspectives, is heart wrenching, funny and brutally truthful. While it is set in a Japanese elementary school the main themes can be applied to US education. Administrators are afraid of parents who are relying on tales told by 10-11 year olds who embroider the facts, or outright lie to keep out of trouble. Teachers are forever caught in between and this script was set before the horrible angst of Covid.
I had many wonderful parents whom I remember fondly but I also had more than a few blamer/screamers. It is a very good film but not a feel-good one.

Omg, hilarious. I maintain that all my friends who are addicted to Hallmark Christmas movies would be kdrama freaks except for this one thing:
“… aided by how easy they are to leave on while, say, baking several batches of gingerbread for a tree lighting ceremony.”
It’s the subs!

I already had a ticket to see The Boring Story of a Boy and a Lot of Birds when I read this, and after seeing it this evening I wish I'd watched dramas instead. It's very pretty, of course, and it's not terrible or anything but it is disappointing in every other respect.

I’m doing Jewish Christmas (Chinese food and a movie) with friends tomorrow. They want to see The Annoying Boy & the Birdie, so I’ll not go in with any expectations. My Japanese friend is disappointed that we can find it only in the dubbed version, which means I won’t get the benefit of her running commentary about what the characters are actually saying in the original language.

Finished Sound track#2 and here are my final thoughts - Acceptable production values and acting but it does extend to the plot. The execution fails to do justice to this reunited lover’s story. They broke up and reunite. They break up again and one letter and a trip together are all it took for them to have happily ever after. Reconciliation happens offscreen – just like magic and without any reason.
Still continuing with the Dog Show just to satisfy my morbid curiosity to see how it is going to land and looking at latest episode I can say – not gracefully.

SOUNDTRACK #2: With just a few little tweaks, the ending could have been perfect. I admit I don't watch these types of shows to see the main pair decide they've grown up and apart and that's healing and mature and wonderful. Such a resolution is absolutely healthy and appropriate IRL, but it doesn't work for me in a short-form romance. But I would have liked the final scene to be the ML coming to the airport in support of the FL, and then we could have had a brief scene where he tells her he loves her and he'll be there when she gets back, and they kiss so we know that the FL loves him too and that they'll ultimately reconcile, but she still gets to go off and have her solo trip and figure out who she is outside of their relationship. Then we maybe even get a short little epilogue that shows them a few years later going on a trip together as a married couple or family. See? It's not that hard, writers!

MATCHMAKERS: Truly, what a smart, well-crafted show. I was not expecting this to be as good as it is, to the point where I know I'll be satisfied with whatever ending we're given. I'm not even remotely concerned that the ending won't be happy or that our leads won't end up together. I'm guessing that Lady Park will redeem herself by concocting or indirectly aiding an escape plan for the leads.

FLOWERS IN THE SAND: Not a wrestling fan, but this one pulled me in almost immediately. The ML appears to be straightforward and simple, but there's something about him laying it all out for Du-Shik ("I missed you! You shouldn't have left like that--it was mean and rude! But I'm so glad to see you!"), even when she was denying who she is, that got me. I love me a ML who is this earnest and honest with just enough of a hard edge (he is a competitive athlete who trained hard for years, after all) to make him interesting. And the cinematography is gorgeous.

MY DEMON: The sprinkler kiss was a bit too choreographed for me, especially on second watch as part of the opening of ep. 9. I noticed this little finger flare thing that Kim Yoo-jung is doing whenever she holds on to SK's arm, and it's taking me out of the moment because it's so obviously deliberate and performative (I understand their job here is to simulate passion and romance, but I'd like to be less aware that it's a simulation, thanks). The resulting composition is lovely to look at, but the raw emotion is lost. But that said, this show is very much like "Mr. Queen" in how it appears to be a silly farce at times, but then gets very, very dark in an instant. That song is creeping me out, too, although I appreciate the way Gu-won tried to help Do-hee re-associate it with something positive.

PARK'S MARRIAGE CONTRACT: This show is very cute and very forgettable, which makes it perfect for this time of year. Bae In-hyuk and LSY are painfully adorable together and even as I agree with @hacja that the virginal male hero in this type of drama is a rather ridiculous...

😵‍💫

THE MATCHMAKERS continues to be a delight, and is the only reason why I was looking forward to Mondays on work days. I’m so pumped to see the final episode, and a bit wary, too! But I’m sure it’ll be GOOD, one outcome or the other. This watch will be shoehorned in between family visits, which is a tad sad, because this show definitely deserves to be watched in the big screen!

MY DEMON slightly dropped in the humor department. Also the ominous prediction by you-know-who kinda reminds me of unfair rules that have sunk the last eps of Heartbeat, too. Fingers crossed, haven’t watched today’s episode yet.

PARK’S CONTRACT well, well, well. For some reason I’m putting off watching this weekend’s episodes. GAH! Waeee… they sure are a sweet couple, but the last episode wasn’t the best in my books. But I’m sure I’ll finish this one.

For whatever reason, I picked up VINCENZO again, after stalling it maybe last year (or the year before? Forgot when it came out). It’s popcorn entertainment and a “fun” *overly gestures quotation marks * Taec *gulps*.

Then, sly Netflix charmed me into watching a Gyeongseong Creature trailer, fully aware that horror is definitely not my jam. So I had to cleanse my memory by a quick FF binge of the best WHAT’S WRONG WITH SECRETARY KIM? scenes. I don’t regret it, and am sure absolutely nothing’s wrong with me, and I’ll be able to fall asleep without any nightmares whatsoever.

Dropped: Dogs & Wookies. I’m sad, but not inconsolable.

Sigh. I’m watching some stuff (that’s the best description of my mood right now), but nothing has me waiting expectantly for the next episode. Here’s to a better 2024.

COMPLETED:
SOUNDTRACK #2: A nice little ditty, like the song the show was centered around, but turned out to be a series of three chord progressions and not much more. The story, characters, the relationships, and the song were all underdeveloped, but at six episodes, it was short enough not to get too invested and a pleasant little diversion.

WATCHING: This week I kept thinking of a Dramabeans commenter who said something along the lines of “I don’t want to watch a drama if I have to turn off my brain to watch” Most of my live watches this week have been with me thinking this in the background, which has at least meant my brain was on a little bit.
:
PARK MARRIAGE CONTRACT: Sweet OTP, but like the plot, I realize they are both kinda dense. The modern hanbok outfits, whether plagiarized from a real-life designer or now credited, are beautiful—I especially loved the one that the mom was wearing when looking at the diary writing itself. My faith in the weird, unpredictable cousin has continued to be rewarded even though he is underutilized.

SAMDAL-RI: I hope the show will do something to me make me like Sam Dal. It’s very hard to watch a show when you don’t really have a reason to like the main character. I think this show illustrates a common trope right now—there is a plethora of immature adult characters who have careers but are stunted emotionally or in maturity. In this show, so many of the adults act like drunk toddlers. What’s going on?

LIKE FLOWERS IN THE SAND: JDY’s acting is great here, so much tension between the seemingly dense and fidgety outside and his crushed soul inside. I don’t know about the rest of the story—the murder mystery, the possible sirreum match fixing plot, the Du Sik/undercover Du Sik storyline—but I will continue to watch for now.

FAKE IT TIL YOU MAKE IT: Watched this c-drama, and wow, even though the OTP went through a lot of twists, the chemistry, the flirtations, the tensions were so real and so grown up (grown ups are complicated and not perfect) that this was a great watch just for that aspect.

Second to last week of the year, wow, how the time flies...

A GOOD DAY FOR A PETTY REVENGE TO BE A DOG: At this point I'm not even sure why I'm still not dropping it - out of habit? Good feelings are certainly long gone along with the logic. Waiting for it to end to put poor characters out of their misery and perhaps to see some justice served to a certain revengeful mountain god bc he pisses me off so much.

GORYEO-KHITAN WAR: Sorry, didn't have any tears left for this one these days, postponed till the next week again.

LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND: Ep1 was OK - JDY was great, visuals nice... and that's kinda about it? Writing and tone constantly jumping from a decent sport drama to lame forced mystery and random character that weren't even properly introduced certainly leave to be desired.

WUXIA ROAD BLUES A JOURNEY TO LOVE: *plays Highway To Hell* Fine, first things first - I did NOT hate the ending. Nor was really surprised with how it played out - genre, tropes, foreshadowings, even OST were hinting at it hard since the day1. Ofc I'd love nothing more than purest HEA for our favorite gang, but would it feel organic in this kind of story? I'm not sure honestly. Not to mention the censorship aspect - let's not forget that these characters are not just regular martial arts heroes but spies/assassins with enormous body count each. Would c-propaganda obsessed with "moral values" really allow such people to safely walk into the sunset? So yeah, I hoped for the best just like yall did, but was mentally prepared for a more realistic scenario from the get-go. My only fear was that the ending won't make sense - or adds unnecessarily separation for moar drama - but luckily it didn't come true. Every single fallen hero went out with a huge bang - true to their character and in a very cool and cinematic way. Yes, I cried my eyes out (snow daydream scene, ugh!), but it didn't feel... empty or infuriating in the end, you know? Regarding ambiguous epilogue - I think its implications were a bit too good to be true, but either way my fave OTP this year remained together, which I absolutely count as a win. Details aren't so important. In any other show I'd rage to the moon and back at remarks like "it's the journey that matters", but here it was the whole point, just like both titles suggest. Characters hit the road only to find the love and other equally precious things on the way, it wasn't meaningless at all!

I do think it could've been executed slightly better. Did drama got some episodes cut as well? Pace was iffy sometimes. Mostly disagree with bad editing claims, but writing and epilogue's CGI needed more polishing. And wtf was the whole Lil Marq... sorry, Duke's storyline? Kiddo stayed a royal dumbass and biggest pain in everyone's back till the bitter end, I can't believe writing kept favoring him and his nonexistent character development through the whole drama.

All that screentime could've been spent way more wisely on things and people that actually contributed to the plot and EVOLVED. Others may forgive him for all his mess, but I surely won't, he doesn't deserve it *snarls* Last minute YSS and CY love line had potential but ended up executed like an afterthought - I never got that true (*plays There's No One Like You*) bond feeling from them, no matter how hard drama tried to sell such impression. Why not start it sooner and develop things more organically? I do wonder whether writer herself just didn't believe in YSS ever changing his ways for any woman, so maybe there was no point to dig deeper. Every other pairing in the show worked for me - even the one I kept wishing to not happen, but that was inevitable, I guess lol.

And ofc the main OTP - oh, how I loved them! They were a true gift - mature, romantic, funny, loyal, cool, morbidly sweet, hot (special thanks for keeping their teasing till the very end), everything! Anyone who claims that they didn't look gorgeous together - wtf are you even on? As a certified huge pompous weddings hater I was so happy with what we've got here, it couldn't be any better! Butterflies absolutely broke me tho((( And that reverse flashback montage - ooph, this drama sells angst so beautifully. I know some folks eventually got bored with the lack of conflict from the pairing, which is kinda valid, but I never felt this way - for once we got a drama couple that was truly a team and union fighting together and FOR each other, not AGAINST. How could you not love OTP that makes pinky promises with bloody hands and freaking kisses mid-battle with an explosion in the background? This is the peak action romance! I'm gonna miss them terribly...

The whole gang too ofc. What a team — unforgettable characters, friends, siblings, kids and parents... Perfect found family! It was a true magical combo of writing, directing, acting and natural chemistry. Something tells me we won't get dream team this great anytime soon... Idk about others, but my journey to love this show and its cast reached the destination safely. That was the true HE for all things concerned.

P.S. As I've said, I'm not angry at the show... but a comfort pill wouldn't hurt. Can we get THE PRISONER OF BEAUTY out of dungeon pls? I really want to see LYN portraying essentially a total opposite of NYZ *plays Perfect Man* (how many songs references can I squeeze in here?), that would be a fantastic follow up with all the contrast. Not to mention how badly I want to see him being badass in armor again...

I did the grave mistake of watching A Prisoner of Beauty's trailer. I've always liked Song Zu Er but I'm not a fan of historical c-dramas that aren't wuxia or xianxia. But this time I watched the trailer for Liu Yuning as he grew on me as NYZ and damn, I want to watch it. But now it's more likely to never come out than be released unfortunately.

If that'll console you a bit, I made an even worse mistake by reading the novel during one of AJTL's "no new episodes for days" periods))) Combo of the deeper knowledge of plot and characters with trailer's epic visuals is the real pain, we could've had it all!

I'm still slightly hopeful, at least until SZE is officially declared guilty. I wonder how risky it is for the platform to just air it with zero promos before that happens...

0

If I'm not wrong, this show also needs to clear censorship first to air. So there's a chance even that won't be cleared because of the tax evasion scandal. They can't air drop it before that. And they tried something similar with the Zhang Xincheng BL show, 8 episodes in it was pulled off air.

1

Also the armour 😅 LYN looks good in uniform and armour. I'll save myself from reading the novel though I'm really tempted.

1

@wapzy Reports about whether the show got the airing license before the mess happened are kinda confusing - some say it did, some that it didn't. Not sure if the license gets automatically revoked once any kind of controversy happens... If yes, then it's truly hopeless, unless she's miraculously proven innocent or the whole thing is re-shot with another actress. If not - who knows? Few shows with actors still under investigation successfully managed to air, tho not without a struggle.

BL dramas are a different case imo, the whole genre is certainly banned, there is no "what ifs" or benefit of the doubt to be used as a loophole - for the time being at least.

Yep, he really sells this whole "armor clad mighty warrior" look like no other, both physically and vibe. We NEED more of that!)))

1

Yes moarrr of that. I really don't get the criticism about him not being good looking enough. He isn't a stereotypical pretty boy but he is manly and handsome in his own way. His acting has improved but he still has a long way to go. Till then I'll be fine watching him in an armor lol.

1

@wapzy One day cnetz will shockingly discover that there is more than just one extremely narrow type of a human beauty... one day. Until then we and other people with TASTE will have him all to ourselves)))

I like his acting style tbh, he seems trying to feel his roles rather than just mechanically performing what the script demands him to do. Esp his very cute crescent eyes he gets so much flack for - they have LIFE in them. I'm hopelessly weak for actors with expressive eyes^^ That gorgeous voice and doing his own stunts don't hurt either...

0

Omg @gikata are you me? Lol. I feel the exact same about him, especially his cresent eyes. The show criticized them and his looks quite often, idk if it was an adlib or the writer's input. But i felt bad for him. Now I know some makeup, filters and photoshop contribute to his look as well but LYN imo is good looking enough with really expressive eyes.

1

@wapzy ahaha, great minds think alike)))

I noticed multiple jabs at his visuals in the show too. Felt like an actor's meta to me - dude is known for his razor sharp tongue in general and self-roasting comments in particular. The story of how he got NYZ's role is a great example of this - apparently it was thanks to producer googling his videos while drunk his height, age, imposing aura... and "scary villainous face". I'm speechless)))

It's fascinating how beauty standards differ in various places - I've been discussing the show on the local forum as well, and pretty much everyone in the comments collectively agreed that he's good looking overall and really handsome as NYZ specifically. His performance was very well received too. I think I just witnessed the birth of a cult following lol.

The writer was flip-flopping with Li Tongguang/Marquis Chang Qing/Duke's character. He advanced in rank but not in character development. Just when I thought he was over his obsession with his Shifu, he repeatedly returned to square one.

I really can't decide whether writer loved or hated LTG's character, but she certainly did it with DEDICATION. There was too much of him in the story - far more than logically needed honestly, not to mention him being romantically entangled with all major female characters somehow... In other hand, his endless "one step forward, two steps back" thingy was ridiculous, at some point I started to feel that the guy is being trolled 24/7 not just by Liudao boys))) It's like he was in a completely different show than everyone else. Did producers force love triangle into the script against writer's will or something?

@kiara he's gonna be in LYX's currently filming S+ fantasy wuxia. Supporting role, but apparently a memorable one, there was quite a bloodbath over it during casting)))

1

Good for him. Practice makes perfect. So many of the young actors today take lead roles when they are not ready for it. I've been avoiding/dropping historical dramas with new young leads. The majority are terrible, both in sageuks and C-dramas.

1

@kiara hah, I'm usually trying to be less judgemental since it's not like EVERY drama needs a great acting, passable often works too... But you've gotta do a bare minimum and make a genuine effort at least!

Historical dramas are my fave, so I have little patience left after almost two decades. Lol

Only following one k-drama at the moment, 'Tell me that you love me'. It's subtle and understated, and apparently I'm in the mood for subtle and understated. The only other drama I've managed to finish this month is 'Perfect Marriage Revenge'.

Though I am going to give 'The Matchmakers' a second try, because so many people are raving about it.

Chinese drama: really, really annoyed that I bothered watching 'A Journey to Love'. I know a lot of people are fine with the ending, but I hate series that suddenly switch tone - it's like the writer breaks the contract with the viewer right at the end.

Japanese drama - a re-watch of 'Call it mystery', because I really like clever, anti-social main character, and the subtlety of the writing: the way that the main character's back story is only ever hinted at, never fully revealed.

Zhang Ruo Yun did it again to me. He forced me to shell out again.
1. In 2022 I subscribed (and continue to subscribe) to iQIYI so I could watch his contemporary police-slice-of-life drama ORDINARY GREATNESS (38 eps). 5 star performance. I loved it.

2. Last week I subscribed to Youtube Premium so I could watch without all those annoying ads his contemporary high school drama from Youku: THE HOPE (30 eps). It is airing Dec. 7 to Jan. 7. ZRY is outstanding in his portrayal of high school teacher Lei Ming and so are the 5 odd ball kids in his class. So far Youku is making the english subbed episodes available daily on Youtube. I believe that is slightly behind the live airing in China. I have watched 9 of 11 available episodes.

I took a break from THE HOPE to continue with wuxia cdrama A JOURNEY TO LOVE which also continues to be highly enjoyable. I am about half way through having watched 21 episodes. It has finished airing in China and I gather the ending is a disappointment to some but I will push on to the end.)
On Viki US I snuck in in this week the jdrama: DON’T CALL IT MYSTERY SPECIAL (2023). It is a movie which runs about 2 hours. It aired in September. It was so nice to see Masaki Suda again as university student Totono Kuno (along with a new pal in the second half solve a nonviolent conundrum). The first half is a replay of episode one from the original series. You don’t have to have seen the original series to enjoy this little film.
Added to all the above last night I started a new gritty crime cdrama from the iQIYI Light On series: THE LONELY WARRIOR (24 eps) airing from Dec. 22 to Jan. 4. I have watched 3 of 7 available episodes. I am totally drawn into the story.
All this pushed my kdrama viewing last week off to the side.

@mary! It is so nice to see you up at the header.

@kiara, the short answer is no if you are asking about the 2010 Korean adaptation (KBS’s MASTER OF STUDY) of the the original Japanese manga which is also the source for the current cdrama THE HOPE. However based on your prompt I see that KBS’s MASTER OF STUDY (16 eps) is available subbed on KBS World on Youtube. Looking at the cast I am like, oh my! Yoo Seung-ho at around 17 etc.

Gyeongseong Creature I am so tired of one thing regarding the Netflix Effect - how many dramas that they have been involved with producing in the last couple of years have featured excessive gore. It takes me out of the story, and I don't emotionally invest like I do with many dramas. And sadly, I could have really gotten into this story with its setting and the actors and the characters.

The Matchmakers - are we in for a tragic ending?

Good Day to be a Dog - agree with so many here that the show pretty much fell apart when the story shifted to the past life/beginning of the curse.

Park's Marriage Contract - I've been enjoying this one, but haven't seen this weekend's episodes yet.

My Demon - despite the pretties and the chemistry, I find the worldview/world building here kind of awkward . Demons have people sign contracts that allows the people to get what they want and then end up to hell, but demons aren't "bad" and can actually truly love someone? And demons were creatures created by God to be people's guardians, but our male lead was once a human. And don't get me started on the God character, who seems neither "good" or "almighty." Typically with fantasy shows along these lines you can see the influences (like Goblin's mixture of mostly Buddhism and some Christianity) but this one's all over the place, and yet...nowhere.

My Demon- Agree the worldview/world building is terrible? ridiculous? lacking? all of the above? I just treat it as a translation problem (its not, but its how I think of it) He is not a 'demon' but a powerful magic user. He obtained the magic while human by taking on a curse, and he fuels the magic by cursing other people... Once you think of him as a magic user, then normal fantasy rules (ie there are no rules) apply and it all makes sense.

Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency - Just discovered this and loving it. Silly, with costumes, flowers, and Kim Min-jae
My Demon Came for the eye candy and the silliness (That Tango moment is probably my years highlight) staying because the story is suprisingly good- Even now the big bad has been confirmed, there is still a lot of grey in our other characters!
Tell me that you love me Lovely and quiet. The sound/silence dichotomy in the drama is a lovely way to have constant low level tension in the story.
(Did my italics work? If not, don't laugh too much- its my first time trying them)

It feels like I am being pelted with shows but I am not complaining 😃.
There is so much to watch and catch up on, and for that, I am grateful because Kdramas have felt like a lifeline in a very tumultuous time in my life. Okay, so here is what I am watching.

1. Gyeongseong Creature
I binge-watched the released episodes of Gyeongseong Creature and my god! I was so stressed in the best way. I loved the thrills and the multiple things happening all at once. The cinematography was so beautiful it made me ache. I can't wait for the next episodes. I will say though, that the back and forth between Chae-ok and Tae-sang was getting tiring at times.

2. The Matchmakers

I am exercising a saint-like level of restraint and waiting to watch the last episodes together. I love this show so much!! I saw that it will be coming to Netflix in my region in the new year, and that's almost enough to keep me alive. You bet I will be rewatching.

3. Single's Inferno Season 3. Oh my word!! The drama is so delicious and the commentators (is that what they are called?) are a breath of fresh air. I commend the production team for finding a way to keep things interesting in the new season. Not that they needed to, because I could watch 36 seasons of this show, but still, I think it shows ingenuity. Tuesday can't get here fast enough!!

4. Like flowers in sand.
I haven't watched a lot of sports K-dramas, but I am a huge fan of the person returns to their hometown trope, and an even bigger fan of Jang Dong-yoon so I decided to check this out. So far, I like how "understated" it feels. I don't know how to explain it perfectly, I just like it.

5. My Demon

I am mostly here for the chemistry between those two, so yummy. I am kind of over the fighting for inheritance, and murder mystery sub-tropes so while I like this, I can't say I love it. I feel like other shows have done the "superpower/mythical being" thing better. Song Kang is a dream but the cut of his blazers keeps throwing me off.

6. My man is cupid. This is my favourite "mythical being" show at the moment (refer to earlier Jang Dong-yoon comment). I love a feisty female lead and Baek Ryun (Nana) is delivering!! Even though I am tired of murder mysteries, I like how it's been done here. I know that this show might be reinventing the wheel, but I still find myself thinking about it and looking forward to it. I want to finish typing quickly so I can catch up on this week's episodes.

7. The Story of Park's Marriage Contract. This is another one that I didn't expect to like but now I can't stop thinking about it. It is just so funny! Lee Se-young is acting her heart out and I am here for every second of it. Now, again, I could do without the inheritance drama. I feel like there's enough drama with the whole time-slip stuff that they really didn't need all that inheritance stuff, but that's just me.

8. Welcome to Samdal-ri. I keep saying I am not going to watch because...

'Song Kang is a dream but the cut of his blazers keeps throwing me off.' oh yes....I thought that was just me not having a clue about fashion. But the best fashion should accentuate and draw attention to the person, not make them look odd!

COMPLETED:

Moving - On the surface, the show appears to be a superhero action movie. And while I like action movies and have a pretty good tolerance for violence, I thought the fight scenes were excessively graphic and went on too long.

But at heart, the show is really a family drama, and a terrific one at that. For me it was all about the characters and relationships: the parents and their children, the children with each other—even Hui-Soo and her adopted “uncle,” the terrifying giant. I loved watching the superkids growing into their special powers and into adulthood, with a special soft spot reserved for Bong-Seok. It was exhilarating to see both generations combining their individual talents to defeat the formidable Team Evil. The cast was uniformly excellent. Not nearly enough screen time for Zo In-Sung.

The Kidnapping Day - One of my favorite shows this year, with a compelling story, an ingenious and unpredictable plot, and complex characters who made it hard to tell sometimes who were the real villains. But far and away the heart and soul of this show was our OTP: softhearted kidnapper Myeong-Jun and his bossy, literal know-it-all child captive, Ro-Hee. Myeong-Jun reminded me of another fiercely protective dad, Jang Ju-Won in Moving, although Myeong-Jun managed to take a punch or a stab and keep fighting without having Ju-Won’s self-healing superpower. Off-the-charts chemistry between Yoon-Kye-Sang and Yu-Na, both of whom deserve some sort of acting award. While the show sagged a bit whenever the two were separated, it landed a perfect, happy, tear-inducing ending.

Vigilante - I found the show entertaining: big on action, but short on character development. While we know that Ji-Yong quest for revenge comes from witnessing his mother’s savage murder when he was a child, we don’t get to know him very well as a person. Some of this can be attributed to the writing and some of it to Nam Joo-Hyuk’s rather expressionless performance. Yoo Ji-Tae, bulked up to Schwarzeneggerian proportions, was a major presence in every sense, but we still learned almost nothing about his character. Lee Joon-Hyuk, as Gang-Ok, injected some much-needed zaniness and seemed to be having a blast in the role. Once again, though, I’d have loved more backstory; while his impressive collection of superhero action figures gives us a hint, we never learn what prompted him to become the Vigilante’s partner in vengeance. The producers seem to have set things up for a second season, when we might perhaps get to know these characters in more depth.

WATCHING:

The Matchmakers (15/16) - I almost dropped the show after episode 3. I couldn’t connect with the characters and found the overall premise offputting. But based on all the love it’s gotten from the Beanie community, I decided to stick with it to the end. There are a few scenes or characters that have sparked a little interest, but overall I’m finding the show pretty forgettable. I don’t feel any chemistry between the lead couple, and don’t care whether or not they end up together. And while I may be forever committed to the lowest reaches of Hell by the Dramabeans community for saying so, the weakest element for me has been Rowoon’s bland, generic performance.

DROPPED:

Revenant - Dropped after 1 episode. Probably a very good show, but not my cup of tea.

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 - Dropped after 3 episodes. I thought the first series was pretty good (if not rewatchable), but this one did nothing for me. What drove me over the edge was Hong-Joo. The man-hungry woman who won’t take no for an answer is one of my least favorite tropes. I doubt anyone would find the situation the slightest bit amusing if the genders were reversed.
