A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 8

It’s a good day to break the curse! Breaking a curse is no walk in the park, but it becomes a different case when you’re walking with a family who’s got your back.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 8

Picking up from where we left off last week, Hae-na is lost in thought when Seo-won runs to rescue her from the “suspicious man” — who ends up being her dad. Oops! Dad came around to surprise Hae-na and ended up being surprised by Seo-won’s arm-grab instead. Heh. Handsome and protective of his daughter? Seo-won is a yes in Dad’s books, but Hae-na drags him away before he spills the beans about her secret.

Hae-na and Dad have a conversation where he tells her about when Mom first told him about the curse. Dad says he was scared and thought about running away, but that’s when he saw that despite Mom’s seeming calmness, she was equally scared. How could he run away after seeing her like that? Hae-na wonders if Seo-won will think of her like Dad thought of her mom. “Of course!” Dad insists. “He seemed like a good guy.”

For the longest time, all Hae-na had to go on was Yoo-na’s bad experience with the shitty ex, and her uncle’s sad experience with not being able to break the curse. While she already knows that Dad accepted Mom with the curse, it’s nice — and encouraging — to finally hear a positive perspective on the curse situation from Dad. To everyone else (Hae-na included), her kiss = activation of the curse. But to Dad, the kiss = his daughter’s first kiss — which he now celebrates with a rose! Go Dad! I’m so glad that father and daughter had this moment together.

Unfortunately, Hae-na barely gets to marinate in the celebration when Eun-hwan texts her to come over to a sketchy location. She wisely shows the blackmail text to Yoo-na and Woo-taek, and they follow her to the location — but hide in the shadows. Like the bastard he is, Eun-hwan appears and starts off with sniffing Hae-na and giving her dog treats. Damn! I may or may not have yelled out inappropriate words at my screen while watching this scene.

To show that he’s not bluffing, Eun-hwan sends Hae-na the video he bought from Yoo-na’s ex. He also threatens to post the video online, and tell Seo-won everything — and unleash dogs on Seo-won, his phobia be damned. Eun-hwan is really non-recyclable trash! What does he want from Hae-na? Money, of course! All the money she can gather within 24 hours. Oh and ermm… she need not bring her sidekicks with her at their next appointment. Shit! Eun-hwan saw Yoo-na and Woo-taek.

A vindictive human like Eun-hwan would never be satisfied with just money, so Hae-na’s family doesn’t even bother pooling funds. Instead, the Hae-na Protection Squad — led by Mom — takes a day off work to bring the fight to Eun-hwan’s doorstep. How dare he join forces with the ex to blackmail her daughters! Mom is out for blood, and I’m cheering her on from the sidelines. Special shoutout to Woo-taek for his active participation in all of this. That man is family — whether he ends up with Yoo-ra or not.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 8

Seo-won is slightly alarmed when he learns that Hae-na took sick leave. He also learns that Cocoa is a virtual dog, and Yul has some explaining to do. But trust Yul to lie through his teeth, and trust his uncle to believe the lie. For now. There are more pressing matters for Seo-won to attend to like bringing porridge to the “sick” Hae-na — who is actually sick with worry.

While the sisters get into a downhearted “I’m the one who’s more sorry for putting you in this situation” competition, their parents and Woo-taek pay a “friendly” visit to the ex to get Eun-hwan’s contact information. They end up in Eun-hwan’s studio, and destroy all his equipment before packing up the evidence against their girls. I hope Eun-hwan doesn’t have insurance. He needs to pay for the damage out of his pocket.

Seo-won sees a teaser video where Eun-hwan announces his plan to unmask Hae-na, and he goes after Eun-hwan as well. The guys end up in an alley where Eun-hwan’s lackey waits with his dog, and Eun-hwan takes advantage of Seo-won’s phobia to knock him out cold. The protection squad attempt to use Eun-hwan’s ransacked studio to lure him to them, but he one-ups the squad by using an unconscious Seo-won as leverage to lure Hae-na out.

Eun-hwan puts Hae-na in front of a live video stream to capture and transmit her transformation. His impatient and perverted ass also attempts to kiss her to see if she’ll transform quicker. Thankfully, his attempt at sexual assault is stopped by a kick from Seo-won! Oh yeah, Lackey gave up on Eun-hwan and helped Seo-won to escape! As Seo-won punches the daylights out of Eun-hwan, Hae-na flees. And when Seo-won goes after her, she tells him not to come closer. It’s almost midnight, and she can’t bring herself to tell him that she turns into a dog.

Seo-won approaches Hae-na anyway. He tells her that he wants to bond with “Cocoa” — and that’s when the clock strikes midnight, and Cocoa appears. Seo-won gingerly picks her up, and reminisces on all the times he spent with Hae-na. “If it’s really you, I don’t need to be afraid,” he thinks. Prince Charming kisses Cinderella, and the curse is broken!! *wipes a tear and does a celebratory dance* It’s not that Seo-won has been magically cured of his phobia, it’s that Seo-won, despite his phobia, risked it all to break Hae-na’s curse. This right here is true love on display.

But how is Hae-na fully dressed immediately after turning back to human form, when she earlier shed her clothes as a dog? (This is totally me nitpicking right now lol.) Afterwards, Hae-na apologizes for hovering around Seo-won as Cocoa in order to break the curse, and I love that she did this. Seo-won finally confesses to Hae-na, and she asks for them to kiss one more time. Remember, she won’t turn into a dog anymore if it’s with someone she has already lifted her curse with. So they kiss. And kiss some more. And I’m really happy for you guys, but can you stop reminding me about how single I am?

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 8

So we don’t forget that he’s also an important character in this show, Bo-gyeom makes an appearance to put an end to the Eun-hwan arc by wiping his memories. On this note, we travel back to the Joseon times where Bo-gyeom cursed Hae-na’s family’s ancestor as follows: “When your descendants find love and are kissed, they will take a form that is no longer human. They must prove the sincerity of their oh-so-precious affection to turn back into a human again.” Uh… okay?

Before the curse, we see that Bo-gyeom developed a friendship with a girl named CHO-YOUNG (Joseon Ji-ah). But as to how this friendship turned out and why Hae-na’s family was cursed, I guess we’ll find out soon enough. But you know what? I don’t really care that much about it now that Hae-na has lifted her curse, and we’re finally entering the Seo-won × Hae-na dating era. I just know those two will smother me with their cuteness!

@unit you were not alone in your nitpicking! I too was wondering how her clothes were magically back on. It was already inconsistent, because when Yoo-ra's curse was broken as a kid, she came back fully clothed too, but I just figured that was because she's a kid and they weren't going to film her half dressed. Anyway! Moving on.

I honestly loved her family going around trying to solve this situation. Maybe some folks weren't into the fact that Hae-na took a backseat for that bit, but I wouldn't let my family member confront their tormentor either, so I'm glad they kept her (as much as they could) from further trauma. Also, I loved that her family never crossed the line into actual harmful behavior towards the baddies. Break their instruments of torment? Definitely. Freak them out a bit? Absolutely. But no one actually sustained bodily harm at their hands, and I appreciated that too.

Our leads are soooo cute together. I loved how worried Seo-won was when he heard Hae-na was sick, and my heart hurt with hers when she tried to tell him everything so many times and just couldn't. I loved her asking him for another kiss at the end, and his tentative question about whether she would transform. Hae-na: You could kiss me 1000 times now without me changing. Seo-won: challenge accepted. Me: *rewinds to watch again*

That bothered me husband and me, too. IMO they just wanted to keep the (imo, lol) iconic moment from the comic, which does not have Hae-na's clothes disappear.

I know it is ridiculous to be irritated by such things in KDs but I can’t help it. It is a bit annoying when a drama doesn’t follow its own lore. Of course being a KD, they couldn’t/wouldn’t even give a slight glimpse of nudity so I choose to believe that @bbstl has cracked their code. That must be it!

I know. It doesn't take a TON of effort to make something like this internally consistent. In the comic, the clothes magically disappear and appear with the transformation, and even though it leads to some hilarious and sticky situations in the show, I liked it better that way.

Thanks for this! So, they could’ve just added one more magical element and given those of us who are nit-picky a break but obviously some of the plot required the clothes, etc to be found after the transformation.

The could have wrapped the dog in her sweater before the smooch.

To add to my comment below: how is that racier than her being naked in her student's bed?? Ah, Kdramas.

Great Idea I can picture the *tasteful scene .
Draping it over her shoulders.

Oh, you guys are forgetting about the 5-minute Rule. It’s like the 3-second Rule when you drop food on the floor: if you grab it within 3 seconds, it’s still ok to eat? If you kiss the Cursed Dog within 5 Minutes, she keeps her clothes on 🙄🤣 Joke. I did just laugh when that happened.

I was really bothered at how the HaeNa doggie had to be wet and shivering and scared, can a dog actor be trained to do that? They better not have really scared the dog 😠
On the other hand, I was disappointed that the bad guy could even get up and walk away after being beaten up by BoGyeom. He should have pulverized him.
Perhaps this reveals some issues I must work out that I’m less worried about the human than the dog? But I really, really hated that bad guy.

It was a good doggie and a bad guy, so it's not human vs. dog but bad vs. good.
However, I think a thorough beating, his computerstuff smashed up, and some amnesia, *may* be a fitting punishment. If he had been not just beat up, but genuinely humiliated online, that would be even better.
And I think he lost his minion, too.

My head-cannon for why they both transformed back fully closed is that that's how it works when you finally kiss for the second time and end the curse. Everything gets reset. If you think about it that way, it works.

Someone else mentioned that, so my further head-cannon is that it only happens when the other person is a willing participant unlike with the sister's ex.

I actually did a google search, and I did spell it wrong. Cannon is the military artillery. I should have spelled it canon, lol.

My head canon is that if you transform to the dog form and transform back to the human form at the same place then your clothes would be automatically back on.

In the episode 2 or 3 weeks ago, when Bo-gyeom transformed Yu-na into a dog to threaten Hae-na, Yu-na then transformed back into her human form with clothes on at the same spot. So I kind of confirmed my theory, but of course we can never rely on Kdramas for some fully explainable theory. They never give us that with their fantasy elements.

I have loved and love many dogs but I don’t kiss dogs as a rule of thumb. Someone whom I love kisses his dog all the time and if I’m honest, it grosses me out a bit as “dog germs” prey on my mind which might be irrational so Beanies, no judgment from me if you like smooching your dogs!

3

@dncingemma I actually went to grad school with a man who was studying the bacteria that can be passed from dog to human, so your rule is a good one! I love dogs, but I don't kiss them, and I don't let them lick my face. Not irrational at all!

I'm trying to tag you guys, and it doesn't work for me, so hopefully, you both see this comment, DancingEmma and Unaspirated.

Dogs rile up my allergies, so I really can't even touch them. But even if they didn't, I would never kiss them. And I'm gonna be honest, I don't get how other people can.

THe isea about him wrapping her in his coat would have been so cute. AND sexy! Innocence and sexiness on both sides, it doesn't get better.
I had just imagined him closing his eyes and suddenly feeling her bare shoulders against his hands, and her (after some kissing) voice trembling, "Please keep your eyes closed!"
And, gentleman that he is, he would of course never ...
and then, she says "You can open them now," and he does, and she is decently, though hurriedly dressed ... maybe not quite established in some "cool" or "sweet" position that she thinks he will like. Or otherwise, dressed, but right in front of him, noses almost touching again.

The drama was fun until now but with the whole you tuber thing it went into completely weird territory. I imagine they wanted drama but this just felt forced. I am guessing now that the curse thing is over or at least ML knows about it, we will move on to the SML and the Joseon era story. I said a couple weeks ago that I felt that his actions always ended up helping the leads, as ominous as they make him seem, I continue to believe that.

Mostly a clip show to get to the Main Event. Somehow, the transformation and curse breaking was not big or bold as the lead up would have suggested it to be. There was a lot of side angst from other people in the Bad Reporter being evil showdown, but not a lot from the main couple. It was not quite anticlimactic but not as dramatic as expected it would be. The post dog smooch was cute fitting the overall theme of the show. But the show now diverts to another side path with the Mountain Spirit story line, which begs the question why he is an immortal high school teacher who apparently has stayed close to Hae-Na’s entire clan for generations. If it was guilt, he could have ended the curse a long time ago. If it was for his bemusement towards humans, would not have gotten stale pretty fast? You would think a Mountain Spirit would have more pressing matters like guarding nature from global warming, clear cut logging, nature trail litter bugs.

They're making this so needlessly dark and complicated. Why do dramas keep doing this to Lee Hye's comics? IMO, half of the appeal is that they're chill and cozy, but still interesting enough to keep you invested. You don't have to make them all dark and high stakes. I also prefer the way the comic handled some of the scenes. See my fanwall for a discussion of what the drama changed from the comic.

On a more positive note, that kiss scene was really good and I really liked some of the OST in this episode (I should check to see if they released any of them).

I don’t know what’s keeping me from LOVING this drama. Is it the changes from the comic? Cha Eun-woo? The airing schedule? The fact that I mostly know what’s gonna happen so there’s less tension for me? Or maybe some combination. I dunno.

I wished that she told him her secret even if he already knew. I didn't like she didn't find the courage to tell him and she turned in dog because it was midnight. Her sister's ex was awful but she had other examples like her father, Yul or Woo-Taek who ran after the ex to help the family. She could have trust Seo-Won too. So the scene was disapointing.

Bo-Gyeom is the worst regarding the curses. What a twisted idea even for the Joseon era!

Staying there and transforming in front of him is the same thing as telling him, in my book. It took the same degree of courage, maybe even more. Yes, he essentially knows at that point, but he hasn't actually seen it for himself, so it's not truly confirmed. Transforming provides that confirmation.

A) her own agenda, caring about breaking the curse and not about his opinion

So in a way, the romantic choice for her was to NOT tell him.

There were so many emotionally resonant scenes this episode. It made my heart feel happy and squishy. Hae Na's fear and anxiety around being so incredibly vulnerable and risking opening herself up for not just rejection but potentially putting herself in danger was incredibly moving.

I still dislike most everything around the reporter plotline, but mom and dad and older sister's best friend taking care of business was a very high highlight of this episode. I was dying laughing.

I'm very surprised they went ahead and resolved everything around her transforming when we still have six episodes left. That means they will probably be focused primarily on the past life stuff now, which is another plotline I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully, this episode is an indication that they plan on actually moving things along on that front instead of spending so much time on what I've been calling PPL for Bo Gyeom's face. I'm willing to enjoy this plotline if the writers are willing to invest in it. I just don't want anymore scenes where Bo Gyeom does nothing.

Yeah, the clothes thing bothered me too. I get that kdramas are allergic to full nudity unless there’s strange slapstick comedy involved, but the blatant flouting of established worldbuilding irritated me. We could have this ridiculous YouTuber stalker plot line, but not some consistency? C’mon guys.

And anyways, thank god the stalker thing is over. It felt really out of place in this otherwise fluffy but undramatic story and it went on for longer than it needed to. I’m kind of dreading the Bo-gyeom episodes because I have a feeling it’ll be just as overdramatic and totally inconsistent as Eun-hwan ones. Goddamn, Lee Hyun-woo is wasted in this. I don’t get why he keeps taking these thankless, nothing roles in dramas when he’s a pretty well-known face in Chungmuro.

This ep made me laugh really hard and tear up too unexpectedly! The mum and dad were hilarious with how they were chasing the jerk ex bf, I'm glad they got the spotlight this week. It was really super adorable how the family came together to protect and comfort one another too ❤️

And gosh, I thought she'd tell him first so I didn't see that alley way scene coming at all, but I was close to straight up crying when Seo-won picked up dog Hae-na who was all scared and looking at him like ⚫️.⚫️ What an utterly heart touching scene!! And then the kisses at the end, be still my heart!! I really really liked that he 'figured' it out but also wanted Hae-na to feel comfortable telling him herself. I must be the only one who disliked this episode a lot. Yeah, we got some fun and cute moments. Like See-won almost breaking your future FIL's arm or the whole conversation between father and daughter, which was super sweet.

But from then on, this drama turned into a dark crime thriller. Good God, did they Flanderize the bully. Like I've said before, he was bad enough in the webtoon, but here he full on commits kidnapping, blackmail and was barely prevented from committing sexual assault.

And like, all this needless melodrama 😭😭 They essentially just re-traumatized poor Seo-won with this bully-kidnapping arc... Completely opposite to the webtoon's spirit, where they sedately heal each other's pain.

And it's a livestream... Now that Haena's identity has been leaked, how do they go back from this? How do they address it going forward? did her students see all this nonsense? Will tiger man wipe every single viewer's memories?

Yeah, it was cathartic to see Jin beat up the bully up but… Was all this necessary? all this melodrama essentially forced Haena to tell Seo-won instead of her actually working up the courage and choosing to? Hell, even after all of Seo-won's prodding, she doesn't admit it on her own, the transformation does it for her. I wish the story here gave her the agency to explain everything on her own initiative.

Two other things I did like: 1) tiger guy in that hair and robes hit diff. 2) the epilogue was cute in a cringey kinda way. Almost made up for everything that came before.

Also, what is the Lifetime channel doing here?? how are they involved in this drama's production?

Episode 8 is my fave so far, with the breaking of the curse, and Haewon romance officially starting; and sealed with passionate and fluttering kisses. Cha Eunwoo played his scenes so perfectly, including the action scenes, and kissing scene of course. He truly is a romance drama King. His Seowon portrayal is so satisfying, so that I just turn a blind eye to some inconsistencies with Gaena turning to Haena scene. I really just love episode 8 and looking forward to more sweet and interesting scenes in the next episodes. Wednesday come fast please.

Good thing it's finally over, and by it I mean both curse and bully subplot, show is much better off with them gone. Otherwise, it was hardly a good episode - sure, lots of what I liked the drama for returned, like leads being super cute together, actually funny family hijinks (what a supportive clan they are! parents are the blast together, much better than just mom and sisters alone) and plot went places, unlike last week - but wow, did they really have to go this far and dark in this story? I agree with many other beanies that this was rather unnecessary. Oh well, at least some super annoying "doing dangerous stuff alone without warning anyone" tropes were partially avoided. Baby steps.

Pacing could've do some improvement as well - we spent so much time on YR's shitty ex and related trauma, for example, that show's supposed MAIN CONFLICT - SW's dog phobia delaying the curse lifting, remember that tiny detail? - was sidelined so much that we didn't even see ANY of his internal dilemma once he knew for sure about the curse. He just went from slightly suspicious to knowing it all over a few scenes (mostly off-screen - WHY, show, why?!), and then they just smooched the damned curse away anticlimactically. At least the following kiss fest was almost enough to sweeten my lukewarm overall impression... almost. THAT was great, they looked so relieved, happy and in love, for once a proper post-confession behavior in a drama! *wails in single along with recapper*

BG to the rescue once again, I guess - when will he stop doing nice things while looking awfully creepy? And when will YR finally stop crying over her long failed romance with that walking crap and notices the vet guy (Angry Birds nickname folks on MDL gave him made me HOWL lmao)? And when will poor Yul gets a puppy and life of his own instead of constantly fixing everyone's problems? AND when will kdrama stylists will burn this sageuk Lee Yeon terrible wig for good? NONE of k-actors can make this abomination work (except maybe YSH... maybe), stop using it for every drama mountain god ever, once was already too many, let alone more!

Not that I'm against all the remaining episodes being dedicated solely to OTP being mushy workplace couple, but some other filling is needed in this dessert, and I'd rather it to be something else other than Past Life Drama and whatnot.

P.S. Was really nice to see SW in fully unleashed mode, it suits him so much.
P.P.S. Un-curse the uncle before it's too late, dammit!

I am very confused as to how he knew what needed to be done to break the curse after she transformed. Did anyone tell him at some point and I just missed it? He certainly acted like he knew, but I was waiting for the explanation and I didn't hear it.

It was cute, but it didn't really make sense. Anyone else?

The drama it doesn't make sense, in the webcomic the bully tells Seo-won ("she's just using you to break the curse!")

The bully showed him the blog of the ex-boyfriend. I think it was there. Just masked as a conspiracy theory. But that's the basis of the bully-ex-classmate to do an investigation about them.

To Beanies who watch this show later: I hoped you enjoyed this show.
It stops here: After this, the storyline is a slowly spiralling mess, and while fans wait and hope that excitement about Bo-gyeom, it is taken up, but stays incoherent and without urgency.
So - stop here, and use the remaining 8 hours to imagine how this would have played out with you in the main role, and your male lead of choice. Or just watch another drama.
You're welcome.
