[2023 Year in Review] Bean of Disappointment

Following up the Bean of Greatness, the next bean we’re awarding is the Bean of Disappointment. It’s a sad bean to bestow, because even though disappointing dramas happen often (i.e., we’re used to it), there’s often one that just stings with what could have been, should have been, and might have been… if only they had consulted us.

Not to be confused with the famous Editors’ Picks, this bean series is much like our other DB team posts — each writer sharing their feels. Add your own personal Bean of Disappointment in the comments and join the crushed hopes fun!

missvictrix: I have a lot of disappointment “you should have been better” beans to pass out this year. Castaway Diva is high on the list, but since I dropped it, I’ll go with See You in My 19th Life for my choice here. And just, sigh. For a drama with a gorgeous premise and that was filmed and executed with such finesse… why did it feel so dead inside? The chemistry between the two actors responsible for our epic romance was nil, but the problems the drama faced wouldn’t have been solved with recasting only. Something deeper was missing in this beautiful recipe, and it’s when a drama is missing that spark that it really hurts. Oh, the drama it could have been.

tccolb: In hindsight, I should have lowered my expectations going into Family: The Unbreakable Bond, but it was really hard to not get invested when the promos were so darn cute. I had imagined a predominantly comedy spy action, but the actual story wasn’t as fun as I had hoped – not to mention some plot points that I couldn’t get behind. In the end, even the golden re-pairing of Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk wasn’t enough to keep me watching. Still, if the dramagods allow them yet another reunion in the future, I’ll be suckered and sat in front of them again.

mistyisles: Let me preface this by saying that I genuinely enjoyed the majority of My Lovely Liar’s run. This show had so much going for it — a fresh, interesting premise, compelling themes about truth and trust, an adorable romance, Seo Ji-hoon, and even a strong start. But the greater the potential, the greater the disappointment when the show fails to live up to that potential. And by the end, My Lovely Liar not only failed to capitalize on its strengths, but it also took a frustrating turn with its central mystery that pretty much killed my enjoyment of said mystery. It certainly wasn’t the worst show of the year, and I still love a lot about the story it set out to tell, but I’ll probably always be sad that it just didn’t do that story justice.

DaebakGrits: My 2023 Bean of Disappointment goes to See You in My 19th Life — not because I thought it was the worst drama of the year (*cough* Kokdu *cough*) but because it failed to meet my extremely high expectations. As a fan of the original webtoon, I tried not to let my love for the source material cloud my judgment. I could totally love the webtoon and still be optimistic that the K-drama medium could breathe new life into the story. And you know what? I was actually pleased with the first few episodes, which only increased my expectations for how the story would unfold. Unfortunately, this drama adaptation lost its luster the more it progressed, and a lot of it had to do with the OTP. Seo-ha was portrayed as being extremely broken and traumatized by the car accident that killed his childhood friend — to an extent that I often felt like Ji-eum’s aggressive pursuit was too excessive. That feeling clouded my perception of the OTP, and if you can’t root for the OTP of a romance, is it worth watching?

Unit: There were a number of disappointing dramas this year, but top of my list is See You in My 19th Life. Actually, this wasn’t a disappointment, it was betrayal. While other disappointing dramas went downhill — or at least showed the signs — earlier on, See You in My 19th Life was consistent. Until it wasn’t. There are certain expectations when it comes to adaptations, and while it’s okay to put a new spin on things, it’s not okay to butcher the crux of the story until it becomes almost unrecognizable. All that distortion to the plot ruined the drama for me — and even as a standalone story, I can’t gloss over the glaring plot holes. I loved everything about the drama except for the story. Which is sad, because story is king. Maybe I’ll be less critical if someone can explain why everyone and their mothers featured in Ji-eum’s first life — and one person who was supposed to be featured barely even had a presence in the backstory. Or how Ji-eum “forgot” everything that had to do with Seo-ha and went back to her old job, but not a single person there could tell her that she once quit to work at MI hotel.

Dramaddictally: Nothing leads to great disappointment like great expectations. That’s why in a year with a lot of dropped dramas, my bean doesn’t go to one of the universally despised or ignored, but to a drama that many people loved. With The King’s Affection in 2021 and Extraordinary Attorney Woo in 2022 — dramas that made my best lists in each year — I couldn’t wait to see what Park Eun-bin had up her sleeve for 2023. But when Castaway Diva premiered — a fantasy-premised drama about a woman who pursues a singing career after being stranded on a deserted island for 15 years — I knew after one episode that it wasn’t for me. Still, I persevered because Park Eun-bin generally plays strong characters and brings light to all her performances, and I wanted to see how the story would turn around. The answer was that it never did. Amidst the wildly unrealistic story was graphically realistic domestic abuse, and the further it went along, the more the central characters succumbed to the whims of the stalker plot and its male-lead mysteries — leaving its female lead as washed out as she was on that deserted island. If not for Park Eun-bin, I would have listened to my instinct and given this drama up early, rather than giving it my Bean of Disappointment.

alathe: So, to be clear, I do not consider this bean a mark of shame — quite the opposite. After all, to be disappointed, you have to have had high expectations. I outright adored the first two-thirds of Castaway Diva. It hit all the right beats: the characters were intensely lovable, the singing was gorgeous, and it made me weep on a once-per-episode basis. It really had that spark that makes you realize you’re watching something special! But the last few episodes soured that for me. The plot seemed tacked-on, the noble idiocy rife, and Mok-ha’s decisions felt bewildering in light of her previous characterization. Overall, it made for a frustrating end, because I’d stopped caring quite so much about our leads — despite, or perhaps because of, the fact that I’d cared so deeply before. There were plenty of shows this year that didn’t quite stick the landing, but this was the one that stayed with me. After all, the majority of it was so brilliant!

It's hard to choose, this was a really bad year!
These are my disappointments:
-Trolley
-Strangers again
-Interest of love
-Heartbeat
-Good bad mother
-Crash course in romance
However I want to give the bean to Worst of evil. Not because I hated, because it had so much potential in story and I constantly hoped it to be great.

Ohhhhhhhh the Worst of Evil is wasted potential : the thriller. It had no substance and, if you tqke out the violance, not as dark as it wants you to think it is.

For me, it's a contest between My Lovely Liar and Divorce Attorney Shin. It's true, See You in My Nineteenth Life was disappointing, but I had a bad feeling about it from the first moments of the show and didn't last past the fourth episode. My Lovely Liar and Divorce Attorney Shin each managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. But which was a greater disappointment? My Lovely Liar was a better show overall, and the homophobia of the resolution was inescapable, but it happened before the last episode. The weird decision to have Attorney Shin day drinking alone in front of a convenience store until his friends discovered him? That was the last scene, after the beautiful resolution of the protagonist getting custody of his nephew. Oh, man, it's like they don't even get why alcoholism is bad.

I didn't watch as many 2023 shows as I thought I had, but some of the ones I found disappointing have already been mentioned. So I'm going to throw a curveball and name A Time Called You as my biggest disappointment.

Though I had never seen the original, I had very high hopes for this drama, thanks to the story line and the actors involved. But ultimately I felt let down by this show. I didn't think the two leads had strong enough chemistry to justify this all-encompassing love story that would have them travelling across time. The murder mystery portion was well-plotted but felt like it took over the romance many times. Why can't we get a straight romance without a murder?! And the time travel elements were somewhat confusing. I finished this feeling sad at what could have been.

I did not watch this remake, I did watch the original Taiwanese drama , which was well done. A somewhat complex story line but they pulled it off. I would recommend Some Day Or One Day

Hello everyone, for me it's **Doona!** because I was impatiently waiting to watch Bae Suzy grace my screen again after her stellar performance in Anna.

I was moved and impressed by her acting in Anna and her character had depth. I was expecting her to pick a role as impressive for her following project but instead it was painful to watch her in Doona!, such a waste of talent!

I take comfort in thinking it's because of a limited choice of great FL roles available and that she's not completely free to decide on her projects.

I'm seeing this sad pattern of great actresses performing their top art and then not remaining steady and being offered underwhelming projects. For example Shin Hye Sun in Mr Queen > 19th life or Lee Se Young in Red sleeve > The law cafe.
I havn't watched Cast away Diva but the same seems to have happened to Park Eun Bin.

I'm curious about not being completely free to decide on projects. Does SK run its own version of the old Hollywood studio system? If so, maybe the actors/writers should look at the story of how United Artists began. It's pretty tough having had a well-received drama and then being pushed into dross. If they are going to fail and be criticised, at least it should be an own goal rather than a wasted penalty.

Someone here once shared an interview of Kwak Dong Yeon saying that people mistakenly think actors can choose their roles but he revealed that he never got to choose.

If only the most succesful actors can have the final word (over their manager and management company), I assume that the financial aspects play a big part in their decision as well as the potential for growing one's personal brand. I wonder whether they can put their craft and artistic considerations above all else.

Hum... It's more complicated than that for me.

On paper, See You in My 19th Life looked pretty great for an actress. But there are many elements that play a role in the final product and you can't know what will happen before the end.

It's the same for Doona!, for an ex-idol, the role could have been really interesting.

The same for Park Eun-Bin, singing for a role is a nice opportunity, it was a famous writer, etc.

Actors want to try different things in their career and everytime time they make a choice for a role, they take a risk.

Wow, See you in my 19th Life is getting a lot of hate. I didn't think it was great, but I didn't think it was that bad either.

My biggest disappointment is an on-going drama Welcome to Samdal-Ri.

Once it was announced, a healing return to home type drama with Shin Hae-Sun and Ji Chang-Wook, I was ecstatic. Even the poster looked welcoming and calming.
I couldn't connect with any of the characters at any level and I spend almost an entire week attempting to finish ep 4 and now I'm giving up on it. The writer will be on my blacklist.

joesonghnabnida my lovely Shin Hae-Sun for picking on you. She's one of my all time favorites and I think her presence sets the expectations higher than normal

I will watch it together with my kdramawatching friend. I've had reservation from the casting announcement as I'm not particularly fond of Shin Hye Sun. But if I was able to watch all Sound of magic, I should be able to watch this one? Or maybe I have learned a lesson, and now am better at dropping. I have to keep in mind "if there is an hesitation to drop, then drop".

"The more the central characters succumbed to the whims of the stalker plot and its male-lead mysteries — leaving its female lead as washed out as she was on that deserted island."

Ouch. I made a good decision to not watch it then, thank-you-very-much.

I wrote an alternative story about Mok-ha titled Siren’s Song , She’s rescued at sea. The women are allies and aren’t fighting each other. It’s on my fan wall, 🥰

To me, this was a much-needed story about domestic abuse and its victims. Midst all the copaganda and cheerful depictions of parents hitting their children, and horrible home tyrants that are forgiven, because - family! - a story about danger, stalking, abuse of access to information - and how traumatized persons can have to try to building a career at a time when they feel they should already be building a solid pension's saving while having a kid or two ... It was SO needed.

THAT hit me in the heart. I wish we had a good show exploring this. Thank you for saying this! 🌸💕

Heart to you!
But, Castaway Diva touched on it, at least. They made it end well, and she had just kept her glow and her voice intact, alone on that island, but they did touch on that feeling of being too late.
In a way, that was FL as well as the singer she was such a fan of. She had had problems with her voice and had not even dared tell it, and so instead, she had started drinking, or had at least had severe periods of too-much-to-drink, it seems.
Our main was in grave danger of becoming a wannabe-has-been, and never an "is".
That's why she was close to drowning ... in the corridor outside the meeting room at that entertainment company.

Sounds interesting. Maybe I’ll give it a chance once I have time. I hate skipping parts of the show and don’t really want to invest too much into domestic violence drama right now, but let’s see if I can at least watch those parts. Thanks you for explaining.

And the island was of course a symbol of the time she spent on coming back to life after that childhood.
Another time, we can have an interesting story about staying alive and a bit sane on an actual island.
This was obviously about staying alive on a mental island.

A more realistic version of being down-and-out as a grown-up is the beginning of "Romance is a Bonus Book", where FL lives in an abandoned building and tried to give the impression of having her sh*t together, so that she can get to see her daughter.

Hmm, I dropped Romance is a Bonus Book. I remember it was such a stylish and well-shot show but I don’t remember why I dropped it. Might be that the story was dragging and not interesting.

Mine goes to King the Land. I was eagerly looking forward to Jun-Ho's next project. It wasn't that bad, I really enjoyed parts of it. But as a sucker for romcoms, my expectations were high. I thought this is gonna be good for Junho to choose a romcom after Red Sleeve.

Definitely King the Land. Such an utter waste of Junho and just lacking in soul. Yoona was the only thing I enjoyed from this drama (which I dropped at episode 8), and that is coming from my memory of the horrid drama known as K2.

See You in My 19th Life was disappointing but I can't really put my finger on why. It just slowly sauntered downhill in every aspect.

Castaway Diva for me. I loved the teens in that first episode, and I must be made of stronger stuff because the domestic abuse didn't seem any worse than in other dramas and after all, it didn't destroy them, they took action and decided to leave. What I didn't like was what followed when the adult versions took over. It all became so superficial and there's been enough discussion of Mok-ha's unrealistic character so no need for me to weigh in on it. I was just expecting a totally different story, seeing as if was built on the premise of a lost chance at fame suddenly becoming possible again after 15 years, but absolutely nothing of what I envisaged came to pass - at least not in the first 3 episodes or so, after which I dropped it. It turned into the usual stupid nonsense when there were so many other avenues to go down relating to her 15 year absence. Experiences that would have built on her resourcefulness not evaporated it and turned her into a silly gullible child.

19th Life i watched to the end unbothered, even though Yoona is the most bland insipid actress on the planet. She has learned to act different moods and emotions but there's nothing behind it - as the saying goes, 'the lights are on but there's nobody home'. There's something oddly fascinating about that and I kept going, but I admit it was mostly for the ML who I had not seen before but wouldn't mind seeing again in nice suits. Ahem ...

Sorry, not 19th Life, King the Land. 19th was pretty diabolical though and now we are threatened with SHS producing another turkey in Samdal-ri. Maybe she should slow down, her heartbreaking turn in Hymn of Death is starting to slip from my mind.

I think I have to give the bean to Castaway Diva. Which seems like an unfortunately popular pick for this bean. I was really invested early on, and that first song after she gets rescued from the island hit me EXACTLY right. Just a rush of emotions and had me really anticipating the rest of the show. Even the early dark bits, though jarring and not what I was expecting from the trailers worked for me.

Then it just kind of...continued. It seemed like at every opportunity to go the interesting route when a problem arose, it just didn't. Noble idiocy became rampant, "surprise" twists abound, and just an alright ending that seemed to be ticking off boxes.

I guess like a lot of people, I was here for Park Eun Bin, as she tends to pick interesting scripts or shows in general and I can't say it was her performance that I had an issue with. Mostly came down to the potential I felt was wasted, and the writing in general just being...fine.

My Bean of Disappointment goes to Joseon Attorney. I loved this show, the romance especially, in the beginning but literally fell asleep during the later episodes. The storyline about his sister was a melo, and I hated the forced separation and timeskip between the OTP. I was so disappointed because it would've been one of my favorites of the year.

I dropped most dramas that could have gotten my bean of disappointment. But since they were all dropped, I’ll give it to one that I watched and had expectation for: 19th life. This is one drama that could have done better justice tonits story if it was longer so the end wasn’t rushed to meet some “plausible” (read debatable) conclusion. The end storyline was crap and so was the execution. I won’t mention other dramas like island for this bean because I didn’t even have any expectations for these going in or watching the show, just watched this to kill time and my god did it kill time and more for me.
