You can only pick one: Charismatic villain

You can only pick one, and boy the pressure is on. The DB team will answer a new prompt in each post, and you’re invited to do the same in the comments. Ready to play?

You can only pick one charismatic villain

mistyisles: For me, there can be no other choice: Lee Jin-pyo from City Hunter is and probably always will be my gold standard for a charismatic villain. A huge part of that is due to Kim Sang-joong’s performance and gravitas, coupled with the character’s twisted — but not affectionless — relationship with the adopted son he fashioned into a human weapon for his own revenge. There’s just something so compelling about the dynamic of a hero and villain who are constantly at each other’s throats, but can’t resist rushing to each other’s rescue when needed. At times menacing and cruel, at times almost sympathetic, Jin-pyo hooked me on the show itself within the first few minutes and has stuck with me ever since.

solstices: I’m certainly spoilt for choice by Shin Sung-rok’s villains, but I’d have to choose my favorite among the lot — Liar Game’s Kang Do-young. Shrouded in an inscrutable veil of mystery and masked behind a showman’s megawatt smile, Do-young’s silver-tongued charm, sly manipulation, and penchant for dramatic flair had me rooting both for and against him. Rooted in firm ideological convictions, Do-young constantly put his contestants’ humanity to the test, all while giving them the freedom of choice (or at least the illusion of it). It was so satisfying to watch our heroes put their heads and hearts together to beat Do-young at his own game, yet I almost didn’t want him to be defeated just so he could stay on screen a little longer. Six seasons and a movie for more Kang Do-young, please.

Unit: I’m not a fan of villains. But if I have to like them at all, it has to be for purely superficial reasons. This is why my charismatic villain of choice is Strong Girl Nam-soon’s Ryu Shi-oh. This is totally recenct bias, but who cares? It’s Byun Woo-seok in his villain era, and I’m downing it like the water that keeps me alive. *Wink, wink* Let’s be honest, Shi-oh is a terrible person. He has a number of atrocities on his rap sheet. But you know what else he has? Charisma aplenty, good looks, and fitted suits! Plus who doesn’t like a villain with puppy eyes and a sad backstory? Shi-oh has gone through a lot, and in Nam-soon’s words, he is “a light that’s not sure if it’s real or fake but could be real if it tries hard enough.” I love how he takes Nam-soon’s words to heart, and becomes boyish around her. But I do not ship them. I’m firmly on the Nam-soon × Hee-shik ship, and it works out just fine because I ship Shi-oh with myself. I can fix him, I promise.

Dramaddictally: Why are all the villains in the dramas I watch just the leads’ parents? Lol. Apart from that, there are a few antagonists I love, the favorite being Junho’s prosecutor gone bad in Chief Kim. Villain might be a strong word but he’s certainly villainous — and made me root for him way more than one should for a bad guy. He’s not one of those villains that I loved to hate, it’s more like, I couldn’t even hate him. Along with doing some heinous things, he’s also funny, charming, and loves to eat (hmm, when I put it that way, I feel like the pros and cons are evening out here). By the end of the drama, I seriously wanted another few episodes to give his possible love line a chance and see how his character had changed. Not all villains deserve to be redeemed, but I’m much more interested in the ones that are complex enough that they can be (which is why a very close second on my list was Kang Chae-ri from Love is for Suckers).

alathe: But, Alathe, I hear you ask. We’re picking charismatic villains, and you’re NOT choosing a Kim Min-jung character? To this, I can only respond that that would be cheating. Having waxed lyrical aplenty about charismatic female villains, I feel it’s only fair to give the men a turn in the spotlight. As such, I’m awarding this particular title to Jang Hyuk’s glorious, sardonic, fan-wielding Yi Bang-won in My Country: The New Age! Folks, I am a sucker for a guy who makes ruthlessness look this good. That man oozed in-your-face charisma from every pore, and still tempered it with emotional issues so dire it’d take days to untangle them. To be honest, he stole the whole show. I will never get over the last time we see him on that throne, telling himself he did well — because no one else would say it for him. Did he deserve it? Yeah, probably. But you know what he also deserved? A hug.

In the world of villains, no one, nobody - actor or character - beats Go Hyun-jung and Mishil in my books.

I'm so sorry but they are never coming first place in my books. They can compare but never ever level up. The highest is getting close firsts but never first.

The only one who comes close to Lady Mishil in terms of charisma is her own son Bidam. I am not sure if he falls into the Conflicted Villain or Antihero category though.

Was Bidam a villain? It was really sad to see them make him out to be one. All he had was a pure heart beating with love for Deok-man. Conflicted is a sure adjective to be attached to Bidam - a conflicted character, but not exactly a conflicted villain.

Required fields are marked *

According to Samguk Sagi, Bidam was an old fart that revolved against Queen Seon Deok. There was no romance between them.
At the end of the drama, he had to follow his fate from history. That is, he was executed for treason.

2

I think he is more of an antihero.

2

*revolt*

0

@kiara, I did not buy the forced romance between Bidam and Deokman. He definitely had a thing for her, but not she for him. And the real Bidam was probably different than the drama one. Although most of the characters in the drama were real people, I highly doubt it that they were realistically depicted in the drama. The chronology is also off. Still a great drama though.

Mishil would not have been alive during Queen Seon Deok's time, but the 3 Kingdom era doesn't have credible historical first-hand sources, so the writers ran with what worked for her audience.
I wonder why Kim Young-hyun didn't base it all on the Hwarang Segi. That would have been fun, and she'd have a timeline that made sense.

4

I mean, call the show Mishil.

5

I think I read somewhere that Bidam's role wasn't supposed to be THAT central, but the audience loved Kim Nam Gil so much, the show was rewritten to practically make him the ML.

5

@aicaramba
That's exactly what happened.
IIRC, Kim said herself that she didn't want to disappoint the fans.
I don't think Kim Nam-gil and Lee Yo-won saw the romance coming.

3

I mean he definitely was a sociopath, and I'm pretty sure the writers inserted him into the story the way that they did in order to make him the story's new villain once Mishil was out of the picture, but then Kim Nam Gil was so damn sexy and charming . . .

He was one of the first that came to mind, along with Junho as Seo Yul in Chief Kim. Seo Kang-joon as Nam Shin I (also known as The Original or The One That's Actually Human) in Are You Human Too? gets an honorable mention, as do Oh Jung-se as the team president in Stove League and Kim Eui-sung as the manwha author/true culprit in W-Two Worlds.

I'd like to say someone in Stranger/Forest of Secrets but it's such a spoiler that I'll just give them an award in my head.

But if I really, truly can only pick one, it's Lee Jae-wook as Baek Kyung in Extraordinary You because it was such a tour de force as his first true main role.

I only remembered Shin Sung-rok after hitting send. He was really scary in You From Another Star. His guts knew no bounds.

Not so surprisingly, he delivered as he always does as a villain in a drama I never envisioned he was the villain to be revealed - The King's Face. He was basically in plain sight but The King's Face hid that quite successfully until more than half of the drama had aired. I loved both the villain and the protagonist in this story. I just couldn't take a side.

Jeong Bo-seok (Jo Pil-yeon) in GIANT
Go Hyun-jung (This Mishil) in QSD

But @kiara, LAWLESS LAWYER (2018) (Viki US) was responsible for 2 walk ins to the Kdrama Hall of Fame of Villains:
1. In the Political Division: Mayor Ahn Oh-joo played by Choi Min-soo and

Yeom Hye Ran acting style IS very intense, whether when she's the good girl or the bad girl. Her last villainess outing is actually still recent - Kim Kyung-Ja's Mask Girl and in there she outperforms almost everyone including Nana and the great Go Hyun Jung. Talk about acting prowess.

Uh, Strangers from Hell and Inspector Koo spoilers? And very light spoilers for the killing vote, Blind, Big Mouth, Children of Nobody, Nobody Knows, Psychopath Diary, Mouse and Happiness (because i mention no names this time, but i do mention story elements)

I would have picked Seo Moonjo, he can certainly sweet talk, otherwise he wouldn't be a dentist, BUT anyone with just a tea spoon of survival Instinct would not come near this man. You can sense he is a freak (not the friendly-freak type) and he literally stands like this 🧍‍♂️ in the middle of the street while staring. Your telling me fight or flight wouldn't kick in while he is near you???

Anyway. I pick K from Inspector Koo. She is so charming, i think i would be ready to befriend her even if she told me she is a serial killer (what she is, she kills people mostly for fun).

Some other charming villains i would totally fall victim to because they are charming/seem innocent:

the Killing Vote: i think it's also because of the actor, but i would realisticly never suspect "that person" to have killed a small child in cold blood/out of jealousy.

Blind: this is one of my favs, but i kept on confusing myself even more, especially by accidentaly seeing parts of spoilers and then going bonkers with theories. The serial killer is someone i would probably accidentally befriend haha.

Children of Nobody: okay, probably "charming" isn't the exact word i would use, but i am not really joking when i am saying i could see this serial killer kills someone in front of me and still think they are a baby that needs to be hugged. This was kinda obvious, but my heart refused until the damn reveal was already over xD.

Mouse and Happiness. Yeah no way i would find out either of those serial killers aren't the charming and nice guys they pretend to be. I would find out in my last few seconds after they stabbed me.

Some "charming" villains i wasn't suprised about at all because they just give that *vibe*: Big Mouth (the big bad was sus from the beginning to me, but the actor kept making me doubt myself lol). Psychopath Diary (same situation as Strangers from Hell. Sure, the only reason no one figured out this lil freak is a serial killer, is becauese he stays mostly away from people. Hang out with him for a while and he can't hold back the mess he is)

Nobody Knows. No suprises here as well, he is just so fun to watch on screen. I don't blame the people that fell for him at all, he is really good at messing with people to feed his own saviour complex or whatever else he has going on...

I know this is technically two, but if charisma is the main criteria, than you can't really beat the deadly duo of destruction that is Mishal and Bidam in Queen Seondeok. They set the screen on fire in pretty much every scene and for better or worse they totally stole the show.

I have to say, my favorite charismatic villain that immediately comes to mind is actually a villainess. The fiery, charismatic, gorgeous, dark eyed Kim Hye Ri in The Promise. She was pure evil, the kind you love to watch on screen. Her tirades were so stunning to watch. I really don't understand why we're not seeing more of her in makjangs like Penthouse. If I were a director or screenwriter, I would write a drama just for her. Yes, she has that much charisma and screenpower!

I’d say that his role as Harry and his role in “I’m Not a Robot” are quite breakthrough, but everyone’s preferences are different 😅

1

Missing You was more than a decade ago, and IANAR was a big flop in Korea (got less than 3% rating back in 2017). He hasn't had a hit show in 6-7 years 😥

Kim Min Jung in The Devil Judge.
I liked her way better than the "good guys".

She didn't pretend to be something she wasn't. She didn't act like she was better than the others, she was just like them and she knew it. She just wanted to make things right (in her own twisted way ofc). She was brave and had no filter.
I still remember the speech she gave to does high school girls. I loved it. She was awesome. She totally stole the show.

Honorable mentions:
—The heat in My Liberation Notes. They needed to be liberated from that horrible summer.
—Kim Ji Hun's hair in Flower of Evil. That hair got me so distracted. Too much charisma.
—Park Hoon in Nobody Knows. I don't remember the show that much, but I remember how he made me feel. That means a lot.

I would say NamKoong Min being a versatile actor, very charming and charismatic. He has taken many roles and he shone in The Girl Who Sees Scents as the villain.

My second choice after Nam KoongMin will be Jo Jae Yoon in Alchemy Of Souls. He looks really evil and one look at his appearance and oily voice, I get chills.

I wanted to reply to so many of the comments that I decided to just put them all in one comment.

I don't count antiheroes in villain category, whether they have a redemption arc or not. Also, I hate when writers make villains extremely handsome or attractive or sympathetic just for the sake of it. I never root for villains, it just makes me hate them more or even drop a show.

I am going to leave Seo Yul out of this, I have ranted too many times on this site that he is not a villain. Anyway, back to the topic at hand:

Sung Hoon (Nobody Knows) and Yoon Shi Yoon (Nokdu Flower) and the villain in Blind (avoiding spoilers here) gave three of the best performances in recent kdrama memory but I wouldn't call their characters charismatic.

Same (or opposite) with Oh Jung Se in Stove League. He sure was charismatic, and his scenes with Namgoong Min were Deasang worthy magnetic, but was he a villain?

Yoo Jae Myung in Forest of Secrets was the epitome of charisma, but he is not on my list either, for obvious reasons.

Kim Min Jung in My Fellow Citizens was by far more interesting than KMJ in The Devil Judge, because villains who kill left and right, or play cat and mouse, only because it is fun lose my interest immediately. She was much more convincing in MFC because she had power as in money, and knew exactly what she wanted: More money.
I liked her clothes and her obvious ridiculous dumbness, but charismatic? Her baby sister BY FAR outshone her in that category. Ahn Eun Jin was fabulous.

I completely agree with:

Shin Jae Ha (Welcome 2 Life)
Uhm Ki Joon (Defendant)

For my own top pick, I choose Choi Mu Sung in Lookout. His acting is like burning ice. I don't root for him, he is not sympathetic in any way, he is simply chilling and fascinating at the same time.

Uhm Ki Joon was my second choice. His perfomance in Innocent Defendant was memorable. It is too bad that he does more stage acting than screen acting.

If you go for the not-a-shred-of-sympathy-for-the-villain-just plain-evil-villainy-category, Possessed has two of them:
Won Hyun-joon as Hwang Dae Doo (the serial killer) and Yeon Jung-hoon as Oh Soo-hyuk (the possessed druggie). Both spine-chilling performances.

You can't make a list of charismatic (and creepy) bad guys without Namgoong min. He was sinister in both Remember, and the girl who sees smells.

I wondered if my spontaneous answer of Kim Young Kwang as Seo Do Young in Evilive was too partial because I'm still watching the drama.
However, if Ok Taecyeon as Jang Jon Woo in Vincenzo has fully seduced my friend, in my comparison of vilains Seo do Young stays ahead.

There are some vilains that are more charismatic than the lead, easy feat for Namkoong Min in Girl who see scents ad Ji Jin Hee in Blood.
A few vilains are as seducing as the good guy: Park Sung Hoon in Psychopath diary, Lee Junho in Good manager, Wi Ha Joon in the worst of evil, Park Bo gum in Hello Monster and Shin Jae Ha in Taxi driver 2.

Nevertheless, Seo Do Young does not try to deceive. "I am a gangster" says he, assuming his vilainess in all situations. He rules by scare, but also admiration. Don't you want to be free to act as you wish?

No votes for Park Hyuk-Kwon as Gil Tae-Mi in Six Flying Dragons ?

Or my personal favourite, Cho Jae-Hyun as corrupt prosecutor Lee Tae-Joon in Punch.

I adore Park Hyuk-Kwon in Six Flying Dragons, and I'd also argue that Yoo Ah In's Lee Bang Won deserves to be in the charismatic villain category as well.

He's not playing a villain there, he is just a slightly corrup cop and as he is the main character, he becomes a better person later. He did play a charismatic villain in Strangers from Hell.

Since the brief mentioned "charismatic" I think I have to be more specific with my choice .. hm ... for once, I consider Joo Dan Tae & Cheo Seo Jin (Uhm Ki-Joon & Kim So-Yeon) great villains, but as often screaming & shouting as they are, does not belong into the "charismatic" category .... same goes for Jang Han Seok (Taecyeon) in Vincenzo or Park Yeon Jin (Lim Ji-Yeon), both are great, nasty villains played greatly by both performers but they belong to the petty, over-the-top type of villains ... so!

My choices here are :

- Choi Yoo Jin (K2) Bad Drama with Great Villain #1, played magnificently by the ever-great Song Yoon-Ah. In fact I remember when the drama aired back then many people shipped Ji Chang-Wook's Je-Ha more as opposed to Yoona's Anna which is crazy considering she's the main lead girl and Yoo Jin is the MAIN VILLAIN!
- Coach Kim Joo Young played by Kim Seo-Hyung, her many villainous roles showed her expertise in this role, but in here she surpassed herself as the psychopathic tutor. Coach Kim is a rare villain in K-dramaland, rarely a tutor considered a villain but Sky Castle is a drama that broke many conventions at that time (and brought back the resurgence of makjang genre into spotlight again)
- Huh Jun-Ho as Choi Tae Gook in Why Her, the Bad drama with Great Villain #2. Huh Jun-Ho's intimidating face actually makes him always a great choice to play villainous roles, too bad one of his best performance was in this treacherous drama. His best scene is around episode 9/10 mark - his direct confrontation with his former student Soo Jae (Seo Hyun jin) through a lengthy but very intense debate scene. Amazing performance from both actors all the way.
- Ryu Soo Young as Baek Jae-Min in Queenmaker - evil politician and presidential candidates do not get any better than him. In my book, this is what Why Her should be, and his Jae-Min character struck with me as the smooth talker with evil, twisted schemes behind his kind demeanor.

I read through this whole thread thinking of Song Yoon-Ah of K2, and yours is spot on. Thanks !!!!! Yes -- even though I knew it would be against norm for a Kdrama villain to win the guy, I pulled for her (over the damsel-in-distress lead) after the fire-alarm scene where Ji Chang-wook directed our uncharacteristically emotionally vulnerable villainess to walk out tall in front of her enemies.

To be charismatic, you need to bring righteous people or convert evil people into your illegal or self-serving plans by being a cool, calm and logical psychological chess master.

The trifecta of the clash of such wills was found in DOCTOR PRISONER when Namkoong Min, Kim Byung-Chul and Choi Won-Young each played charming and ruthless men who created minions to be used like sacrificial pawns.

I went through my 50+ watched dramas list and could not remember who half the villains were..

My addition is Park Hae-joon from World of the Married, the cheating husband. He really made me so angry.. his performance was really good.. and if I remember correctly all the characters took his lies as sincerity for a long time on the show... quite charismatic.

I have to put in a vote for the villain in Oh My Ghostess. Even if you disregard the resolution for the villain in the last episode, which is just ridiculous, you rarely get to watch a villain struggling so mightily with his (their, technically, since he was possessed) conscience. His story and character arc added a lot to the show.

Oooh, I think it has to be Ok Eul-tae from Bulgasal for me. He was narrowly edged out of my favorite non-human character slot, but I can't think of any villain more charismatic than him. He was played to perfection by Lee Joon and maintains juuuust enough ambiguity in his past and actions that you're never sure just what he'll do next, but you know he'll look amazing doing it. I loved that we never got the full backstory of him and the two leads until the very last episode, so we constantly had to guess if he was just a villain or a victim also. Not to mention his wardrobe was spectacular, and he cycles through quite a lot of clothing because, you know, it gets blood on it ;)

Yes, Taec in Vincenzo. I enjoyed looking out for his frequent use of American English (his schooling in America shows), e.g. -- “Sunbae - what are you thinking!”. I also agree with others above that 2PM fellow member Jun-ho was a great villain/antagonist who held his own as an actor opposite the always great Namgoong Min in Manager Kim.
