News bites: November 23, 2023

  • The promos continue on Disney+ for Soundtrack #2, showcasing our love triangle leads – Geum Sae-rok (The Interest of Love), Noh Sang-hyun (Behind Every Star), and Demian (a.k.a. Sohn Jung-hyuk) – in new character posters and a video teaser. The romance releases on December 6, with production led by a team of four: PD Kim Hee-won (Little Women) and PD Choi Jung-kyu (The Devil Judge) along with writers Jung Hye-seung and Song Woon-jung. [Xports News]

  • Jeon Hye-jin (Not Others) is in talks for the upcoming series I’m Home, which also has offers out to Yoo Seung-ho (The Perfect Deal), Na Mun-hee (Navillera), and Lee Sung-min (A Bloody Lucky Day). As a remake of the 2004 Japanese drama Home Drama about found family, PD Ra Ha-na (Green Mothers’ Club) is at the helm with writing by Lee Bo-ram (Human Luwak). [Osen]
  • New stills have dropped for tvN’s upcoming Please Marry My Husband, giving us our first look at our tragic heroine Park Min-young (Love in Contract), who’ll soon be on a timeslip-style revenge mission against her biggest betrayers: husband Lee Yi-kyung (Critical X) and bestie Song Ha-yoon (Oh! Young-shim). With Na In-woo (Longing for You) rounding out the rom-com’s leads, the webnovel adaptation premieres on New Year’s day. [News1]

  • After a far too long year away from our screens, Lee Jong-seok (Big Mouth) is reviewing an offer to star in a new series called I’m Against My Own Romance Too (roughly translated), potentially joining Go Min-shi (Jirisan). Production is still in the planning stages and is currently in discussions to air on tvN next year, with scripts penned by Kim Eun (One Spring Night, Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food) and PD Lee Eung-bok (Jirisan, Sweet Home) attached to direct. [Osen]
    • Speaking of homes, Chansung (Bora! Deborah) has been added to the cast of MBC’s Our House (because the meta must never stop). Starring Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires) and Lee Hye-young (Big Bet) among others, the screwball comedy-thriller will be airing next year in the weekend slot. [Osen]
    • Over on KBS, the first character stills have come out for Fantasy Sonata, featuring our main pair, Park Ji-hoon (Weak Hero Class 1) and Hong Ye-ji (2037). Based on a popular webtoon by the same title, the fantasy sageuk will be launching this January and also stars Hwang Hee (Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938) and Ji-woo (The First Responders 2). The plot of Marry My Husband sounds very similar to Perfect, Marriage, Revenge and based on Park Min-young's last two dramas..... I'm not optimistic.

At least she's stretching herself a bit by veering into makjang territory

Sorry, PMY, nothing is going to top PMR

Tragedy and melo is not unfamiliar to Park Min Young. She has acted in I’ll Come To You When The Weather Is Nice and was wonderful as the tragic queen in SEVEN DAY QUEEN.

based on the original material alone, I would say Marry My Husband is much more superior than Perfect Marriage Revenge. But then the execution and the adaptation for Perfect Marriage Revenge is just chef's kiss.

I hope it can get adapted well so that PMY can sort of redeem herself since I know she actually has the capacity to nail it

I actually disagree, the PMR webcomic is way too drawn out but Marry My Husband is imo not only offensive in terms of how it portrays certain topics, but also makes the female lead waaaay too victorious every single time. It gets boring imo

which topics do you find offensive? I find the victorious part super satisfying though, like a super neat conclusion, clear rules of 'going back in times', tightly written with no plotholes. PMR as webtoon is stretching itself thin and get too makjang and unrealistic for what I can believe. I'm so far satisfied with the changes made in the drama to make it tighter and shorter as a story. But yeah, to each their own :)

The infertility storyline, and I don't think the cancer thing makes any sense either. But the infertility storyline is super insensitive and ignorant (the writer clearly does not understand the topic)

There is a poor man who is pitted against those eyebrows and that jawline in #1? Girl, please.

#2: I’m always in the mood for a found family (or three), so I hope this shapes up well.

I’d love to see Park Min-young in #3 something that isn’t just a standard rom-com, but let’s hope these stills just caught her miraculously making the same face over and over again. I believe she has more range than that, and I’d love to see it.

1) I was so excited for the first season and it was complete let down. So don't disapoint me this time, show! I like the PD.

2) Found family is such a good and warm theme! I like the actors too. I'm happy that Jeon Hye-jin is blacklisted.

3) I'm not a fan of Na In-woo. I didn't like how thin PMY was looking in the last drama and it seems worse for this one.

4) I don't understand production team how the same character can be played by Choi Hyun-wook, who was the first actor connected to this drama, and by Lee Jong-seok? But I love the writer so why not! E

5) Not interested in this one.

6) Not a fan of this style...

3: “Blacklisted”? Why is she blacklisted and by whom? Has she been accused of any unethical behaviour?

I think @kurama meant “not blacklisted” due to her husband’s situation. I’m relieved too. She’s a great actress and should continue her career.

I think she never got married. Maybe you are referring to her boyfriend.

It seems that they got married in 2009.

Actually, it was the number 2 about Jeon Hye-jin, and not 2 withPark Min-Young who broke up with her boyfriend before being blacklisted.

2

Yeah.

They lost advertising they did in couple. I was scared her acting career would suffer from this too.

I meant 2 but accidentally wrote 3. I was confused by your “blacklisted” but it seems you left out the “not”. Thanks @PYC

1

@dncingemma Yeah, it happenned to me too often. 😅

1

Me too. Jeon Hye-jin doesn’t deserve to have her career affected by the husband’s deed. The couple recently attended Cannes’ Film Festival with their two boys as LSK had two movies being shown there. I found her quite nervous and looking back, the blackmail would have already happened then. Regardless, the family is sadly destroyed.

1. The more I see the promotions the more uninterested I become.
2. The cast sells the drama.
3. I like time slip dramas and Na In-woo, not necessarily in that order. 🤣 Will they be enough to overcome my general dislike of Park Min-young? It worked for The Contract Marriage, will it work again?
4. YES for Lee Jeong-suk.
5. A 2PM member in My House, surely that is unheard of. 😉 Luckily I doubt he will have much to do in the presence of the ever awesome Kim Hee-sun. Now that is a lady I chuae.
6. Will keep an eye on it.

FANTASY SONATA: Royal Family, Obsessive Male Lead, Dissociative Amnesia, Fantasy Kingdom, Possessive Male Lead, Curse, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Revenge, Love/Hate Relationship. (from MDL)

You'd think the crappy ratings would space out this kind of dress-up sageuks, but I guess not.

Sounds like every trashy romance xianxia ever))) I'd even give it a second look had it indeed been the one... Sadly, kdramas cannot seem to find the proper grasp of this genre no matter how many times they try.

oof 😅. the webtoon, which I'm reading rn, has some of the most well written, intricate, emotionally moving plots I've seen so far. the tags & plot description might be giving trashy makjang, but if the drama sticks to the webtoon's plot, it could be *really* good. if...

I feel for your anxiety, it's a real stress these days to know that a story you really like is getting a drama adaptation. Hope for the best, let's see if this one will be worth all the effort.

3. Who did that to Park Min-young? I've never seen her styled this way before, even when things were grim a la QF7D.

I wished Lee Yi-kyung and Na In-woo switched roles though. I don't think he has the naturals of a romantic lead, yet. And pairing with Park Min-young...I can only worry about the obvious acting gap.

4. Is a real definition of hit or miss.
The writer penned One Spring Night and Pretty Noona of which both garnered opposite reactions. Plus Jirisan's PD🤦🏽‍♂️, prayers is all I have.

Apparently Park Min Young lost MORE weight - down to 87 lbs (she's 5'3") - and producers are calling it her "dedication" to the role. Hopefully it was only done for the first few days of filming (as a cancer patient).

I haven't read the webtoon, but it has a lot of fans who are looking forward to it.

Please Marry My Husband - This is very concerning regarding PMY.
Who would let an actor loose that much weight to play a role, it’s beyond ridiculous. 37 kg weight is not healthy and it is so irresponsible to publish news articles about her “impressive transformation.”

I also am quite worried about PMY and her weight loss. As others have mentioned, even in the last drama she was looking anorexic. This is quite serious now.

It's also a very minimal part of the story, unless it differs from the source material. No way was it worth it imo. We can suspend disbelief!

No. 2. I AM HOME. From the above batch this is the one I will definitely keep up with. It looks like it will have a great cast. (I am currently enjoying (a favorite) Yoo Seung-ho in his little 8 episode off-beat crime/mystery THE DEAL (Viki US)).
The Japanese original HOME DRAMA looks very interesting. I wish it was available somewhere.
MISTY (2018) (Viki US) fans who can forget Jeon Hye-jin’s performance as the unfortunate Eun-joo married to the despicable Kevin Lee (Go Jun).

ok, so your comment really stuck with me and I went off an online expedition to find that jdrama. tbh, I wanted to watch it too considering it has the baby versions of some very famous contemporary actors.
Finding old jdramas, even ones from just 20 years ago, is trying to archaeological evidence of early North American civilizations or something. Regardless, I've tracked down the video files. Good news: all episodes are available and subbed into English. Bad news: they're in, I think, 700x400p? would you like me to share them with you?

1. Noh Sang-hyun... Jesus Christ that man is hot. Even pitting that other man against him is unfair. Looking at that face is reason enough to watch.

2. So glad to see her husband's scandal didn't negatively impact her career. I hate it when women have to (unfairly) take blame for the bad behaviour of the men in their lives.

3. Nope. Absolutely not. I'm so, so over the constant misuse of "method acting" as an excuse for actors to partake in unsafe behaviour. Park Min-young was already dangerous underweight in her previous drama; this could be life-threatening for her health. I'm disgusted by the production raving about her so-called "dedication," especially when her character's illness is supposed to only be a brief part of the overall narrative. I thoroughly dislike the culture of romanticizing method acting and I'm even more shocked PMY thought this was necessary for a small part of an un-buzzy drama.

4. Ooh, Kim Eun wrote one of my favourite dramas of all time (One Spring Night) and the pairing of Lee Jong-seok and Go Min-shi in a script like that sounds great. But I'm still confused how Choi Hyun-wook and Lee Jong-seok could fit the same character description.

5. Keep the 2PM meta coming, productions!

6. I hate Park Ji-hoon's atrocious wig-bangs with a burning passion.

1. Never seen him in anything, but 👀. Unfortunately, there's no other reason so far to believe this will be any less dull than ST#1.

2. 100% on Jeon Hye-jin. Wives are not appendages.

3. I don't intend to watch another PMY drama, but I sincerely hope the 37kg is misguided promotional bullshit and that she didn't really do that. Yes to everything about method acting, when actually *acting* is available as an alternative. 🙄

4. Everything about this description confuses me, including how LJS could sub for CHW unless they completely rewrote the ML. My trust in the writer is non-existent despite how much I liked OSN.

5. Is this the one that was formerly called Gaslighting? It sounds makjang as hell.

6. I hope the photos are lying and @dylanrodrigues42 is telling the truth about this one!

1. NSH was amazing in Pachinko - maybe my favourite performance in that whole show. He was also in Behind Every Star where his character and storyline was a mess, but it's worth it for the visuals alone. Him in glasses >>>

3. Laurence Olivier telling Dustin Hoffman "My dear boy, why don't you just try acting?" remains one of my favourite behind the scenes anecdotes lol.

4. I hope they just rewrote the role for LJS (or another older actor more suitable for Go Min-shi). Pretty Noona still keeps me up at night so your lack of trust is extremely valid.

5. The success of PMR makes me want to start another makjang despite the obvious hazards.

6. @dylanrodrigues42's description sounds amazing and something I'd love to watch, but the cast nor the promotional photos inspire excitement.

Yeah, just as I thought, absolutely not. I’m worried for her health because I really don’t believe this drastic weight loss is just from “method acting” - I remember how painfully skinny she was in her last drama. While I usually hate speculating about a public figure’s weight, what concerns me is how much the production and marketing is raving about this instead of being concerned that their lead actress has supposedly starved herself for maybe one episode out of a whole drama.

#1 Season 1 was such lackluster snooze fest that I am not going to tune in unless I hear rave reviews.
#3 I didn't like PMY's past two dramas at all so I am cautious about it. I always tune in for her dramas, this will not be an excretion but I have feeling that I am not going to get past first four episodes.
#4 Yes for actors but script penned by writer of One spring night and pretty noona? - tough choice.
