News bites: October 2, 2023

  • The countdown is on for Part 2 of MBC’s My Dearest and the new sneak clip reveals our forlorn hero Namgoong Min (One Dollar Lawyer), drowning himself in a sorrow of what-ifs about the past events in Part 1. For now, Ahn Eun-jin (The Good Bad Mother) can only listen and cry because there’s still 11 more days until the sageuk returns on October 13. [MBC]

  • Jung Hae-in (D.P. 2) is reviewing an offer to star in Some and Shopping (working title), which will apparently be his first rom-com if he accepts. Still in the early stages, the classic opposites-attract romance is hoping to have Jung play the by-the-books cosmetics company CEO who clashes falls in love with the flexible-but-efficient top show host. [Newsen, Star News]
  • Speaking of firsts, Hulu Japan’s upcoming Secret Playlist has kicked off promos with a set of new stills, showcasing leads Kim Hyang-gi (Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist 2), Shin Hyun-seung (Han River Police), and Yeon Oh (Twinkling Watermelon). In a romance about a YouTuber and idol singer secretly dating, the webtoon adaptation will be releasing this November. [Sports Donga]

  • The promos continue for ENA’s Evilive as well, ramping up the tension between Shin Ha-kyun (Yonder) and Kim Young-kwang (Call It Love) in the newest teaser. Although I want to believe the latter when he says that they’re friends, I expect we’re in for an unsettlingly dark ride when the noir sets off on October 14. [Sports Donga]
  • Thankfully, this month also brings a trio of heroes who are committed to making the world a brighter place in JTBC’s Strong Girl Nam-soon (previously Strong Woman Kang Nam-soon). With a preview of Lee Yumi (Mental Coach Jegal), Kim Jung-eun (My Dangerous Wife), and Kim Hae-sook (Revenant) protecting our streets in the new highlight reel, the fantasy premieres this week on October 7. [JTBC]
  • Over on KBS, new character stills have dropped for The Matchmakers, featuring our colorful main pair played by Kim Ro-woon (Destined With You) and Jo Yi-hyun (All of Us Are Dead). Preparing to hitch up all the singles of Joseon, the sageuk rom-com will be coming to our screens later this month, airing in the Monday-Tuesday slot starting October 30. [Sports Donga (1), (2)]

Nope to pink for Rowoon. It washes him out. Dress him in the deep blue hanboks!
Also, the following sentence construction threw me off for a sec but quickly decided I like it!: “ For now, Ahn Eun-jin (The Good Bad Mother) can only listen and cry because there’s still 11 more days until the sageuk returns on October 13. [MBC]”.

I don’t think it’s only the pink that’s washing him out. I think he’s also not got his usual lip color on. Seriously. In the last news story about this drama, he looked, frankly, barefaced without it.

Wow. That is really washed out but it also seems to be because of the cinematography. That is no good.

On second thought, maybe this is a deliberate choice to portray a miserable widow as wan and world weary at the outset, and, then when things improve/he falls in love, the more vibrantly coloured hanboks will come out.

Since I won’t be watching I probably shouldn’t comment but one suggestion I can make is for THE MATCHMAKERS to bring onboard the costume designer on MBN’s BOSSAM: STEAL THE FATE (2021) (Viki US) who was responsible for Shin Hyun-soo’s wardrobe. Outstanding job. That should take care of Rowoon.
(Do NOT bring onboard the person responsible for Jung Il-woo’s wardrobe. Disaster.)

"My Dearest" Part 2 sneak clip ( English translation @soompi).

“It’s strange, isn’t it?” says Lee Jang Hyun. “On days like these where the moon shines bright, I’m always with you [in my mind]…”

The star-crossed lovers then sit down on opposite sides of the unopened door, and Yoo Gil Chae sheds tears as she listens to the rest of what Lee Jang Hyun has to say.

“I’m not sure at what point things started to go wrong,” he continues. “If, that time, I shouldn’t have left you behind and gone to Namhansanseong. Or if, that time, I shouldn’t have left you behind and come to Shenyang.” Choked up with emotion, he breaks off as he goes on, “Or if, that time, when you cast me aside…”

Man, after Pretty Noona, One Spring Night and A Piece of Your Mind back-to-back-to back, Jung Hae-in is generally immune from any criticism from me. But however deep his acting tool box may be, funny is not something I associate with him. And I do not count Snowdrop...

The Kingdom concerts are ongoing! Last year Jung Haein went on stage with Yonghwa to sing the theme song from Heartstrings and on stage with Hongki to sing the theme song from 100 Year Bride (where, you probably know, Jung Haein played Hongki’s younger brother--that's where I saw him for the first time). Both song clips are on youtube.

I actually really want him with Chae Soo Bin in this because they were so great in A Piece of Mind.

They're also SUPER popular in Korean manhwa right now. The Korean variants tend to referred to as "otomeisekai" because they are aimed at female audiences

1. Oh good, I still have 11 days to stock up on tissues and gin.

2. Is the "Some" in that title (썸) the same word that means a flirting or non-committed relationship? Also, yes, JHI had funny moments in WYWS and he's done a couple of comedy movies. I guess he has to check the box for "rom-com wealthy boss ML" at least once in his career whether he's suited for it or not.

6. That shade of pink is not his friend, but I kind of like the more natural-looking makeup on him - and the bright, stylized look on Jo Yi-hyun. The drama sounds derivative.

I read that in the synopsis of the drama. Both are widows finding love for the single people of Joseon. I don't mind she is a widow. Its just the first time I see a Joseon widow protrayed as such. Then I remember this article.

1

She must be a widow, otherwise she would have to stay at home and could not leave it without the knowledge of the man (father), the head of the family. Only widows had more freedom in deciding about their lives, but not as much as the drama will probably show here. In fact, she should have separated herself from society, because as a widow she became somehow useless to society because she could not marry a second time (if she married a second time, she would fall to the lowest social rung. Not to mention the fact that many families believed that the widow should commit suicide). In Korea, the role women played in society changed quite late, with Japanese colonization. And Japan itself was lacking in this matter for a long time. It was only the influence from the USA at the end of the second half of the 19th century that began to change and women could receive education. I recently watched a Japanese film about this and the beginnings were difficult, because women in Asian countries where Confucianism played a large role were practically as significant as men allowed them to be. And they only got some power over their lives after they got married, because only then did society consider them useful individuals.

6

Required fields are marked *

Agree. And to a degree this becomes a difficult issue to understand for a non asians who do not have the sub context or the cultural points to refer to. It was just not Confucianism, it was culturally widespread all over East Asia. Up to 10th century women enjoyed a considerable amount of freedom, and then it simply went to dogs. As you said, women could only be as free as their men allowed them to be. It's true in many Asian subcontinental rural areas even now.

Jung Haein’s show - I think I don’t understand what the ‘flexible-but-efficient’ descriptor means (flexible people aren’t efficient? efficient people aren’t flexible?), but I’m happy to see that the CEO’s love interest is a top show host = has a well-paying job = has power and popularity that comes with being a top show host = is not a Candy.

I think it might have a mixed ending. The man in the prison is probably Ryang Eum, though who he is waiting for and who is the authority shielding him, why, are good questions. The officer asks if he knows Jang Hyun's whereabouts, which means he is still alive somewhere. And I am hoping with Gil Chae, possibly under a new identity and hopefully with half a dozen enterprising kids.
One can hope.

I hope it's Gil Chae. The intro scene should be the two leads. I don't see why Ryang-eum would be more important than Gil Chae.

The last scene gave me a foreboding feeling as far as Ryang eum is concerned, that look on his face made me cold. He definitely hates her because Jang Hyun left him because of her. Unless of course the show comes up with a different explaination.

1) The countdown is on for Part 2 of MBC’s My Dearest and your agony

2) It will be fun to watch Jung Hae-in (D.P. 2) in the role of CEO. I guess he was in A Piece of Your Mind but wasn't the typical one.

3) I wonder why Kim Hyang-gi is still choosing drama focused on romance when she's not ready for it. I love her but the romance part always is weird to watch. I'm happy to see Hyun-seung with some weight, he looked too thin in Han River Police.

4) I like the actors but I'm not interested by this kind of drama now.

5) It looks so different from the original, I have hopes.

6) I love bright and vibrant colors on Rowoon. But I prefer the hanboks of The King's Affection with the use of 2 colors like mint green and yellow or purple and pink. The green and red look good on Jo Yi-Hyun.
