[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Talking to potted plants

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting as it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Talking to potted plants.

Your mission:

Search for all those heartwarming and/or comical scenes where a character talks to a potted plant. Maybe they give it a name and treat it like a pet, or maybe they just utter random pretty words to it (or all of the above, like our male lead with his tomato plant in Crash Landing on You). No matter what the conversation contains, we want to hear all about personified plants in this round.

Thanks @RedFox for this treasure hunt idea!

Reference drama:

Crash Landing on You (Episode 3)

Gosh. The only one of these that I know is Bora, Deborah!/True to Love in quite a few of the early episodes. It had a sign on it, right? “talk to me me nicely” or something. What happened to that plant? Did they just drop that metaphor?

I think it drooped when FL screamed at it in a drunken rant. Later FL and her sister apparently took care of the plant and it was thriving.

I don't know if this counts because I don't think anyone talked to it but the fern plant thing from Still 17/17 but 30 that's not only a stand-in for the theme of healing and growth but is practically treated like a person in the house!!

I don't know if FL talked to it but she did move it (repeatedly) right in front of the stairs for the ML to trip over ... I mean to catch the best sunlight.

I think maybe ML talked girl problems with it at some point?

“The bride of Habaek”. FL talks to plants. She even hears the plants answering!

I'm not sure but I think that in “Beautiful Gong Shim” FL talks to a potted sunflower too.

Ah didn't Namkoong Min hide a letter in a potted plant for the FL to find when she watered it and she just let it sit there and didn't water the plant.

There was a ring 🤭 If I'm not mistaken.

My precious  ...  a ring it was!!  It was supposed to grow on the plant when she watered it (**spoiler ... she didn't). There was a card in the pot which said if she grew it well, she would know how he felt about her. So romantic!! 🥰

Gong Shim was my intoduction to makjang (before I even knew what it meant) and rooftops. There are only two things I remember about the drama - Namkoong Min's chest pops and the FL's ludicrous wig getting caught in something when she bowed.

Makes me feel like rewatching it in the My Dearest intermission.

I watched it recently. I don't know if it classifies as a makjang, but definitely it's not a rom-com. I enjoyed it but I have issues with the ending.

So. many. issues.
Especially because it starts so delightfully.

1

The over the top acting, family shenanigans, birth secrets did give me makjang vibes.
Don't remember much of it now but the FL's sister was always trying to undercut the FL and was perhaps the cause of much of her insecurities.
Do share your issues with the ending.

Definitely those are typical elements in makjangs.
Shining inheritance has the same tropes.

But I thought the only pure makjang I had watched was King of Baking 🤔

yes, Onion! wait, some of these odd veggies had names... ?

1

Yes, in CLOY she told him to tell the tomato plant the things that make him happy, so the plant would grow. Later she does the same with a flower from Switzerland

If you take "talking to potted plants" to its extreme, it would include the entire cast of THE REAL HAS COME's nonsensical hysteria and deadpan reactions.

In the INTEREST OF LOVE, the ML gives a “future happiness” plant to the FL and buys one for himself. Given that most of the communication and acting was done with the eyes, I think the longing stares by the amL and FL at the plants count. Also, as we were given an ambiguous ending, I also stared hard at the plants to convey my messages

Go back couple. I had some memory of a plant but couldn’t find it when looking through the episodes but it drew me back in so I started a rewatch and in episode 5 they talk about the dad talking to the plants when he is drunk. I am determined to find the bit I was thinking about as I only reference was the mum saying she was nurturing a plant that had been thrown away I think by the female lead.

I also have a vague memory of a plant in Scent of a woman but I will not go back to check as I did not like that drama at all.

I finished the rewatch only to find that no one talked to the plant, it was just used as a visual for the state of the couple relationship. I am glad I did the rewatch as it is such a great drama for lifting the mood and was part of the 2017 golden era. I feel more confident to try a full rewatch of a couple of the others I loved first time round. I have been too scared to rewatch for fear of ruining a happy memory by realising that the glow was mainly due to effect of being a K drama newbie. I also think mood/timing of the watch are significant as a lot of my favourite K dramas were watched during the height of Covid when anything bringing joy sparkled like gold.

There was an onion plant that the FL gave to the 2ML in Romance is a Bonus Book. I think I remember her talking to it.

Thr most legendary plant talk ever - of off-Broadway off-Bible proportions, is this gruesome scene from Good Omens;
