Heartbeat: Episodes 13-14

Now that our half-vampire’s secrets are out in the open, both friends and foe are spurred into action. Conflicting goals abound, bringing latent antipathy to the surface as each player makes their moves. In the meantime, said vampire begins tying up loose ends, preparing for the inevitable fate that awaits him.

EPISODES 13-14

Hospitalized in the wake of the stalker attack, In-hae calls out for Woo-hyul in her sleep. He’s also the first person she looks for after regaining consciousness, much to Do-shik’s dismay. Won’t she open her eyes to the truth? Do-shik tries to warn In-hae of the bloodsucking danger Woo-hyul poses, accusing Woo-hyul of manipulating her just so he can drink her blood, but she’s not convinced.

“I’m not asking you to like me back,” Do-shik pleads. She doesn’t have to hold him in her heart. It doesn’t have to be him — just as long as it’s not Woo-hyul, because she’ll be in danger. Despite her gratitude for Do-shik’s concern, In-hae stands her ground. All her life, she hasn’t had the luxury of chasing her desires, so she wants to follow her heart for once.

Do-shik’s distrust of vampires and fear for In-hae’s life has him gatekeeping Woo-hyul from the hospital, complete with a blunt request for him to get lost. Left to his own devices, Woo-hyul strengthens his resolve to keep In-hae safe, even from himself. I will give you my life, Woo-hyul thinks. If one person has to die between the two of them, Woo-hyul would much rather it be him — and that time is coming soon, because his regenerative powers have waned, and the bruises on his arm aren’t fading.

In-hae returns home, and our star-crossed lovers reunite in a heartfelt embrace. Knowing he must be guilt-ridden after nearly succumbing to his instincts, In-hae reassures Woo-hyul that she doesn’t view him as a monster, and that nothing has changed between them. He deserves to be loved, and her heart still lies with him.

Seemingly remorseful, Hae-won returns the scroll to Woo-hyul, admitting that the sight of it weighs on her. She asks what she has to do to reclaim his affection, but Woo-hyul apologizes for trying to find Hae-sun in her. They’re two different people — too different.

Needless to say, Woo-hyul’s rejection makes Hae-won’s demeanor turn on a dime. Dropping by uninvited at the guesthouse, Hae-won informs In-hae that she’ll be withdrawing her investment. In-hae will need to pay her back pronto — oh, but since she doesn’t have the funds to do so, she could just relinquish the mansion instead.

In response, In-hae calls Hae-won out for her selfish greed. She’ll never give up the mansion, since it means so much to Woo-hyul. Stopping Hae-won’s slap in mid-air, In-hae declares that she’ll protect the house in Woo-hyul’s stead.

Having noticed the bite scar on Woo-hyul’s neck, Do-shik commissions Man-hwi to capture him alive. Woo-hyul is the half-vampire whose blood he needs, and he has to act fast before Woo-hyul attacks In-hae.

Meanwhile, Woo-hyul distributes missing flyers in an attempt to locate In-hae’s father, which creates the perfect avenue for Man-hwi to lay a trap. Luring Woo-hyul to his lair with a false report, Man-hwi locks him up in a cell for Do-shik to collect.

Thankfully, Woo-hyul’s perceptive buddies have caught on to Man-hwi, and they come charging in to rescue their dear friend. Unfortunately, our morally upright vampires are no match for Man-hwi, who’s at full strength thanks to his decades of greedily guzzling human blood. By the time Man-hwi grows bored of fighting and flits off into the night, Woo-hyul has thoroughly exerted himself — unlike his companions, his wounds aren’t healing one bit.

Still, the day is saved, and In-hae’s father JOO DONG-IL (Seo Hyun-chul) is freed at long last. In-hae is overwhelmed by her father’s return, and since Dad keeps mum about his imprisonment, she instinctively blames him for abandoning his family. In-hae’s struggled to survive all these years amidst the crushing loneliness of losing her parents — how could he just waltz back into her life like this?

Later on, though, In-hae overhears her father recounting his kidnapping to Woo-hyul, and the revelation devastates her. When Dad sincerely apologizes for leaving her alone, it cues the waterworks, and they share a hug of forgiveness and understanding.

Back at Man-hwi’s hideout, Do-shik arrives way after the commotion has settled, and all that’s left for him to find is Man-hwi’s underground dungeon. The pungent stench of blood alarms Do-shik, and he can’t help but grow even more wary of his partnership with Man-hwi.

When Man-hwi’s avaricious demands escalate, Do-shik retaliates by calling off their deal entirely. Unwilling to relinquish his cash cow, Man-hwi offers a compromise via information exchange — he’ll explain how to capture a half-vampire, if Do-shik tells him why he needs a half-vampire’s blood. Oh boy, I don’t like the idea of Man-hwi gaining access to that knowledge.

Ever the guardian angel, Do-shik repays the investment money on In-hae’s behalf. Though he might not like that she’s living with Woo-hyul, he can’t sit by and watch as she’s chased out of her home.

The mansion may have been saved, but Woo-hyul’s life still hangs precariously in the balance. Another dizzy spell hits, and Woo-hyul passes out in the midst of doing laundry, leading In-hae to realize that he needs her blood as soon as possible.

When Woo-hyul comes to, he immediately knows that In-hae’s smart enough to have already caught on to his situation. Resolving to protect In-hae, Woo-hyul departs on a goodbye trip, unwilling to drink even the tiniest sip of her blood. By the time In-hae wakes, Woo-hyul is gone — and even though she knows it’s futile, In-hae runs out in search of Woo-hyul anyway, desperate to save the man she loves.

Aww, Woo-hyul. It’s bittersweet to see how far Woo-hyul has come from his childish, bumbling days; he’s mellowed out considerably over the course of the show, gaining maturity as his foolish antics give way to perceptive insight and earnest sincerity. Woo-hyul may not realize it, but his innate compassion and empathy are part of what makes him so unmistakably human despite his vampiric blood.

On that note, I am so pleased that Do-shik hasn’t lost his sense of reason despite the shock of discovering Woo-hyul’s identity and In-hae’s feelings. Do-shik could have easily turned bitter and vindictive just like Hae-won did, but instead his moral compass remains steadfast in his commitment to In-hae and her wellbeing. However, I do worry that Do-shik’s determination to keep In-hae safe may turn misguided and lead him astray — he may prioritize her safety, but he has to respect her agency too.

As usual, it’s so satisfying to see In-hae consistently stand up for herself, whether it’s against the spiteful Hae-won or the overprotective Do-shik. In-hae has a sensible head on her shoulders, and it’s subverted a lot of potential miscommunication and misunderstandings. Now that she’s gained the courage to fight for her desires, rather than solely focusing on her needs, she’s slowly learning how to listen to her heart. Woo-hyul’s supportive presence has allowed her inner child to heal, and her father’s return pushed her to acknowledge the vulnerability she’d been trying her hardest to hide.

One thing I particularly like about this drama is how it builds a community of support around our two leads, beyond just their romance. Woo-hyul has his loyal friends and Yang-nam, while In-hae has Do-shik, her tenants, and now her father. It’s why I’m hoping that Do-shik turns out to be an ally rather than an adversary, especially since his motives are so sympathetic — who doesn’t want to live, and who doesn’t want to protect the person they love?

As we enter the drama’s last stretch, I’m hoping for our lovebirds and their third wheel to put their heads together and solve their blood conundrum for good. Notably, the weapon that Do-shik crafted — a dagger with a hawthorn hilt and a silver blade — is made from the same materials as the arrow used against Woo-hyul centuries ago. Since Man-hwi emphasized that the method of killing a half-vampire is different from that of a vampire, I’m hoping Do-shik has a trick up his sleeve — preferably one that leads to a happy ending, in which everyone is safe and sound.

Thanks for the recap, @solstices! I'm going to be in the minority with this, but I loved eps 13-14. I laughed, I teared up, I felt with them. The eps provided an important emotional depth heading in to the final conflicts and were in line with the character and personalities of our players. If it were all fluffy butterflies, the stakes would feel shallow and artificial. No conflict=no drama plot. That's just how narrative theory works.🤷‍♀️ And as far as fantasy romance dramas go, HeartBeat is still FAR below the average angst level, and I still believe we'll get a happy ending.

I loved that these episodes showed how steadfast In-hae and Woo-hyeol are in their loyalty to each other, and that even if they stray into noble idiocy territory, it's out of their love for each other, rather than selfishness or cowardice. They are demonstrating self-sacrificing love for each other. The second leads treat love as something to own, and the loved one as something to possess. In-hae and Woo-hyeol's hug on the street after In-hae left the hospital was just lovely, as was seeing In-hae first comfort her boarder, and then Woo-hyeol. Their (FL and ML) conversation on the bench in ep 13 made me tear up, as did In-hae's reconciliation with her dad. And then the backhug and conversation in front of their love tree was just so sweet!!

Woo-hyeol's decision to leave isn't noble idiocy, at least not in the standard definition. First of all, Woo-hyeol spent time thinking about In-hae's safety (or lack thereof) if he stayed with her, and how she would feel if he left her, before acting. He also explained his feelings to In-hae, although not his decision - because he knew she would stop him. Given the current situation and the information Woo-hyeol has (i.e., he's dying anyway, and to live he'd have to kill In-hae, which he obviously isn't going to do), it's a logical decision. Instead, it's In-hae who was the true noble idiot, hiding Hae-won's investment ultimatum from Woo-hyeol (although even that didn't last too long).

Honestly, everyone (except for Hae-won, who is The Worst) acts like real people!! I'm practically giddy thinking about how satisfying the character writing has been, and how the actors have been animating these characters with good-hearted-ness and common sense. Even Do-sik's descent into villainy (or is it? I still don't think he'll cross an uncrossable line, no matter what the preview says, or how much leather he wears) seems logically in line with his character (go ahead, @attiton - you can continue with this line of reasoning 😉).

I think you’ll find that the Hottest are a pretty forgiving bunch, Hopeful, even if, as @kafiyah-bello points out, there was indeed some significant filler this week.

I do think that what you’ve described here, however, is the “noble” part of “noble idiocy,” and that the beauty of Woo-hyeol and In-hae’s formerly constant habit of “just saying it like it is” was that they never, ever hid things from one another, even to protect their loved ones.

Nothing good came from her not telling him of Hae-won’s dastardly intentions, and nothing good is going to come from him not telling her the complete truth about his blood-based needs...or from wandering away into the wilderness without telling her or the Fang Gang where he was going and/or if he'll be back. Indeed, the Fang Gang picked up some of the slack this week and was touchingly and gloriously communicative by telling Woo-hyeol how much he has hurt them by just acting on his own and not talking to them. They love him too!!

PS: It is NEVER, ever too early for hugging.

The Hottest are pretty awesome! 😎

You're absolutely right - Woo-hyeol and In-hae should NOT have chosen this crucial moment to keep things from each other. No matter how good their intentions, it isn't right. Within the drama, however, I can also understand why they did, and I even don't feel as irked as I usually do when this trope rears it's ugly head.

Going off into the wilderness to die is... awfully dramatic for our usually reasonable vamp 🙄 I guess he wants to be off-grid or something. The Fang Gang were the real MVPs this week!!! They're so loyal and AWESOME!!! It's never too early for hugging!

My thought was that maybe U-hyeol is worried about losing control as he gets closer to death and breaks down more? And so leaving might be a very real precaution to take to ensure In-hae's safety? Totally speculating here, but he was pretty shaken up at his instinctual actions at the beginning of this week, and it wouldn't surprise me if he starts to lose control of his impulses in the same way his body is breaking down.

That's what I am wondering, too. Great point, Unaspirated!!

2

Indeed! Very noble of him! As we would expect.

2

I didn't think of it that way but that makes so much sense.

2

I had a similar thought too! Especially, as you said, considering we had that scene where his blood-lust got the better of him and he was appalled that he lost control like that. It'd make logical sense that the closer he is to dying, the more the blood-lust might take over as a self-preservation instinct!

Plus, I don't think this was said out loud at any point so just me writing in my own lines here, but I'd like to think maybe he also considered that since In-hae had to watch her mum be sick and die, it'd be cruel if she had to watch someone else she loved get sick and die in front of her again (not to mention, no guarantee she'd not sacrifice something huge to save him out of desperation).

10

Count me in this minority too HopefulRomanic! I agree wholeheartedly about this week providing a bit more emotional depth that was needed so that the final week will land properly and give the stakes more of a real feel.

I think the fact that we've been relatively smooth sailing is also why I didn't mind/liked the heavier feel this week, plus none of the angst seemed out of character or irrational. Like yes the whole dad misunderstanding could've been sorted out earlier, but her dad's reappearance is a lot to process for In-hae so I don't blame her for not sitting down and asking him where he's been all this time, and in the same vein (hehehe) dad's gone through a whole ordeal and is carrying a lot of guilt - probably also from all the times he wasn't there for In-hae prior to kidnapping - so I do understand why he didn't just jump in with the " I was actually kidnapped" defence right off the bat.

I especially love your analysis about the SLs' views on love as equating to possession or as an indication of personal validation and value (for Hae-won especially) and how the main couple's understanding of love is like the complete opposite. And also 100% agree that it's not noble idiocy, because he's really thought it through and honestly it's pretty sound logic - what else is he supposed to do?

I thought you'd be in the minority with these episodes, but the Hottest are indeed forgiving. Looks like the naysayers have mostly dropped off. Tho in the last few recaps, a few did come out swinging a little late. As long as the show doesn't do our lead couple, and all the loveables, dirty, I can forgive it a lot. It's earned a lot of goodwill in my books.

Why rain on someone else’s parade when it isn’t necessary? Folks are loving what they’re loving, and there’s no reason to counter-balance that. What I’m hearing is that folks have fallen for the characters themselves and that they’d watch them read the phone book! That’s great!!! That's not enough for me to have enjoyed these episodes, but it was for others.

The show is still one of my favorites--but it was clear from early on that it was gonna be tough to stretch the plot to 16 episodes, and such has proven to be the case.

I will say this for ya, @indyfan ...It doesn't stop being noble idiocy because the actions in question don't bother you. That just means that you've forgiven the noble idiot's reasoning. And it's OK!! They always have their reasons.

Here, rather than him running away, I'd rather have heard, "Hey, In-hae. I have this problem. You are strong enough to hear my truth. Let's solve it together."

3

Ah no, I didn't mean to stir up that old pot again. I was just referring to an earlier conversation with HopefulRomantic on the fan wall. I'm glad folks are still loving HeartBeat, as am I.

Yeah, the show as it stands could have easily been tightened up. But they might have had material to fill up 16 if they'd delved into vampire lore, scooby gang shenanigans, the hunter cult and curse, the reincarnation twist, etc.

It certainly would have been smarter for Vampie to talk to In-hae. But for the reasons others have listed, I find it a little less egregious than many other dramas. I hope they find each other pronto in the next episode to make it a blip as with In-hae's little deception. I'm rooting for the show to go out strong!

2

Filler episodes are no fun. The way I yelled at my screen when she wasn't told her father was kidnapped. Sigh, that little subplot took almost 40 mins of the episode. Anyway I am hopeful this lovely little drama sticks the landing!!!

Indeed. I understand we need to fill the episode but this added nothing. How about exploring the consequence of being locked up and leeched off for so long? How about what happened to all those other prisoners? How about the FangGang trying to suss out what Man-whi was up to so adding buildup to the final showdown?

7

Required fields are marked *

The show gave the tiniest fig-leaf to cover the prisoners, with Man-hwi saying they're criminals or homeless - people no one would miss, and also less likely to go to the police afterward.

I wish Woo-hyeol had taken the practical route that since the human blood was already sitting there in the fridge, he might as well drink it to restore his strength temporarily - maybe he knows that would also make him hungry for more, and thus even more of a danger to In-hae, but how different would it be from expired blood-bank pack?

Required fields are marked *

OK. I guess. But they kinda did the same with the disappearing stalker incident. That tho I thought (grimly) that might be because Korean women’s experience dealing with the police re stalkers are as terrible as elsewhere.

I wonder, maybe, Vampie’s condition is too far gone for a little bit of blood to help in any way? Dunno.

I think it was his ethical code... He just didn't want to drink blood that had been forcefully obtained from kidnapped humans?

1

Yes, but when he said that originally, I was all, “All except Old Butler Joo, though, riiiight?” It seems like there were two different reasons for folks to be down there? Sigh. I don’t need logic.

I think we’d all have loved more Fang Gang backstory. It was silly how they just “showed up” at his lair because Rose once smelled blood there…when they had no direct idea why Woo-hyeol had left.

I feel that episode 13 offered us Woo-hyeol trying to decide what was the right thing for him to do to protect In-hae, and then, once decided, fretting about whether or not everything was still going to be OK.

I feel that episode 14 offered us Do-sik trying to decide what was the right thing for him to do to protect In-hae, and, once decided, then fretting about whether or not everything was still going to be OK.

These men are on parallel tracks, each with their own distinct mode of behavior, but both with a solid mental core of beliefs from which they do not deviate. They’re both so upright!!

I hear you all, including @solstices above, saying that Do-sik needs to respect In-hae’s desires more, and I don’t disagree. But he does still think she’s been duped by a vicious vampire who’s out for her blood to live, and from his own POV, he’s seen only evidence to support that hypothesis, except for In-hae’s word.

It seems to me, given all of this, that Do-sik will be the one to figure out the right change to the predicted course of events save her (and Woo-hyeol in the bargain), if the story we saw in the very first episode is to be turned on its head, a choice that will finally break this (unfortunately quite poorly explained) family curse.

I mean who else is it going to be? Catman?? I don’t think so 🤣

I love your analysis of the ML and SML in these eps!! They both have a far higher degree of emotional intelligence than traditional drama leads, and seeing them consider the options and fret about those choices (and their impacts on In-hae), was actually quite delightful! Yes, they're both upright (noble?) men. I think Do-sik will play a pivotal role in the last two eps. Like you said, I think he'll be the key to what is hopefully a happy ending for everyone (except for Hae-won, who is The Worst).

I don’t think Do-sik saw the Fang Gang fight, but I definitely think his visit to the lair demonstrated to him that Man-hwi isn’t to be trusted at all, even as a means to reaching his goal—the scene where he verbally wonders if he’s doing the right thing is direct evidence for that.

I also 100% believe that Do-sik is going to see the difference (like the audience does) between Man-hwi and the entire Fang Gang by the end, and I anticipate an awesome CGI-laden fight scene reminiscent of Scooby Doo (reference h/t @hopefulromantic on the Fan Wall) with Man-hwi and Hae-won on one side of the fight and everyone else on the other.

Our OTP will be safe, and no one’s going to mourn the loss of Man-hwi as a sacrificial vampire victim…but will he be the only one we lose????

I think Do-ski is interesting because he is not a totally black and white character (unlike the awful Hae Won). He is truly scared for his crush/love. As far as he knows, and has heard and seen, Woo-hyeol is manipulating in hae to get her blood.

I don’t particularly like him (he’s too controlling) but I can definitely understand him. He isn’t entirely selfish - unlike, again, the evil Hae Won. Or Man Hwi.

I want cat man to come up with a better solution because he sort of started this whole mess and because he’s half cat! They rock.

Ignoring the fan wall fun, there are solid reasons to hope better for Do-sik. He really is an unfortunate position with his curse and crush. And even when he goes too far, he has some rationale, and even then shows some moral compass. May he see the light and live on to bounce on the waterbed.

In the dead of winter, when it’s been below 0°F (-18°C) outside, and you’ve been shoveling snow or playing in the snow or sitting at your desk or whatever, you can settle at night into soft sheets while your muscles are soothed by undulating waves that radiate a welcoming heat. If you’re lucky, you have a vampire-killer there with you.

No jumping.

After the last two episodes last week, I unfairly accused the writer of changing the humanizing blood drinking rules in order to extend the story more easily to 16 episodes. After these last two episodes, I know the real reason: to ensure that no one can ever again watch a 2PM music video starring Taecyeon without bursting into tears.

I was wondering why it is that the average kdrama writer, while working on a light and yet emotionally effective fantasy romance, feels that unless there are at least 4 episodes of real misery and sadness, then the show won’t be appropriately meaningful. Or, alternatively, why a fantasy couple can’t remain solidly together for the last 4 episodes, but still confront threats and challenges that require their combined resources. Or, even more alternatively, why the female lead, shown to be faced with difficult circumstances and emotional challenges most of her life, has to be shown to suffer more at the very moment she has found love, in what is presumably a romantic comedy.

Sure, if this was a tragic sageuk, where viewers are looking forward to the catharsis of sobbing as anguished lovers die apart from each other, that’s part of the watching experience. But I just don’t know why it is inevitably a part of fantasy romances.

I would agree with your critique if this was a standard rom-com. However, this is a vampire show, complete with curses and cats! I fully expect angst and conflict. It must be noted I grew up with Buffy, angst central, so this is nothing on my skewed scale.

One part of me really wishes they could have shared their problems and solved them together. There is more than enough conflict elsewhere to sustain the show. The other part is reveling in poor Angel’s Woo-hyeol’s suffering. I wanna cry the buckets. My psyche is damaged.

Well, it was just because it started light, and the curses and cats were generally tongue in cheek. I was expecting a little noble idiocy, and the sudden shift to despair and melodrama would be okay, if it was only for one episode, but it has been several episodes now. The preview suggests it will continue yet one more episode, if not through the final episode. But I guess a bittersweet ending would now be in character, so I'm sure I'll join you in copious tears.

Yes, maybe I'm a little sensitive when it comes gentle vampires and their love interests, but the idea that to get emotional depth you have to have Woo-hyeol die, killed and bled dry by his romantic rival, plus In-hae in total despair, is where my objections lie.

But given the deep appreciation here of these melancholy episodes, I now understand that either:

a) Most commentators here are proud possessors of silver and hawthorne knives, and are dreaming of immortality

OR

a) are so blinded by their admiration for the character of Do-shik they are willing to tolerate the despair of all other characters. But I'm not mentioning any names for this one.

Also, another gold bar that this will be a happy ending. If there is a chance of something bittersweet, it may be for 2ML alas. My bigger concern is if it will be a satisfying ending given we have so many open issues and the show’s tendency to use random rules aka Cat Man.

It’s being so misrepresented here that has me smarting. I was disappointed by, not tolerant of, these episodes because the characters stopped communicating openly. This change, in part, is what is bringing on their own despair, and that’s narratively very frustrating to me.

To paraphrase something I said above, what would have been wrong with, “In-hae, I trust in your strength to hear what’s going on with me, let’s figure this out together?”

Nothing. It would have been awesome. His problem is big enough, as @indyfan said, to create sufficient conflict for the drama.

Oh, the vampire universe is varied indeed. Now, Buffy!! What next, DRACULA??? 😉

I am with you on the fact that there was already “sufficient conflict” without needing the melodrama. In fact, I’ve found myself disengaging with Woo-hyeol’s pain because he’s given up. He’s not reaching out for help, he’s not asking the vampire community for ideas about how to change his fate…he’s not even really questioning that stupid Catman…he’s just resigned to death and now has sulked off.

I've also wondered why he is just accepting of everything Catman says. But, in thinking (way too much) about his character, Woo-hyeol acceptance of his fate is in character with his self-conception as a tragic hero. That's really what he wants. If it was just love, he's already had that, twice, from two beautiful women. So in his wallowing in his sad fate, he's pretty typical of a lot of kdrama male characters. Their trauma is what is most important to them.

Show didn't pay much attention to the other released prisoners, but wouldn't they have gone to the police and shouldn't S.K. be blanketed about now in wanted posters with sketches of Man-hwi's face?

As for how to kill vamps and/or half-vamps, Terry Pratchett said it best. Vampires (at least the traditional kind), are super easy to kill. Sunlight. Fire. Beheading. Wooden stake thru the heart... And stake thru the heart will also work on humans so if you have any stakes left over you can still find a use for them.

I do so love the FangGang so I'm glad they got time to shine this week! In-hae and Woo-hyeol are always heartwarming, especially their honest conversations (and backhug!). I enjoyed the moments with In-hae and her dad, and the house guest (plus the guys hanging out on the roof with their ox blood sorbet haha)

Noble idiocy is almost inescapable (maybe that should replace Errand Boy as the level everyone gets stuck at) but I do appreciate that Woo-hyeol considered In-hae's feelings and, given the situation it's more understandable and I think we'll be back on track for finale week

I'm glad Do-shik, while he does have his moments, isn't just a petty, jealous guy and I think he'll come around. Hae-won, not so much. She's following the 2nd lead handbook and it has no effect on In-hae (loved her stopping the slap!) or Woo-hyeol and that's totally driving her batty. Gotta give her credit for having the foresight to put a no-vampires-in-the-guesthouse loophole in that investment contract though

I loved how they all came to protect Woo-Hyeol. They are just so precious.
This show has so much heart ❤️. I don’t know how they do it but so many feels these two episodes.

I wished In-Hae had shared the mansion issue with Woo-Hyeol. I can understand why WH can’t talk about him dying but wish she would have taken his help.

The actor playing Do/Shik is really amazing. I love the nuances he brings to this role. Can he just kill Man-Hwi and end all this :)

On the other hand Hae-Won makes me want to smack her like a mosquito. She is just throwing one tantrum after another.

I am really curious how they will resolve all this. Logical or not I just want a happy ending for all our mansion family. And Do-Shik (I don’t want him to die).

And where is the GOLD?? Last I saw KSH was stashing them in My lovely Liar?

As I said on my fanwall, I'm starting to think this drama is making a parallel between land developers and vampires.

I'm glad that In-hae forgave her dad - he wasn't the best dad, but he literally was imprisoned and couldn't do anything to return to his family for the past few years. I like how Do-sik is complicated and he's a great character, but he just was too much for me this episode. By trying to protect In-hae from what he thinks is a bloodthirsty monster, he is making a deal with a bloodthirsty monster (who actually is one). I did like his confronting Hae-won, who is just acting like such a spoiled brat.

I agree that Woo-hyeol isn't just pulling usual noble idiocy. The drama HAS to have a happy ending, but I can't figure out how they'll pull it off. Also, what is that flashback they keep showing? Did he drink Hae-sun's blood after she died?

I also liked how In-hae's dad figured out the romance so quickly, even if he immediately dismissed the idea.

I love this idea of land developers and vampires. Sucking the life out of people and communities indeed.

I agree completely about Do-shik - I wonder if he understands how contradictory his actions and biases are, or if he's blinded by his preconceptions and ancestral knowledge (and affection for In-hae).

My money is on Cat Man to pull out something random for a happy ending, but I sort of hope I'm wrong. I'd love for it to make some sense in the world that they've (sort of) built, but then again, we're also in pretty unprecedented territory with this whole situation.

I thought Hae-won might be about to turn her villainy around for a second there, when she had that vulnerable conversation with U-hyeol, but then she doubled down hard! Her absolute need to have something she sees as hers is pretty sad, honestly. Or at least, it would be if she wasn’t so terrible. It’s also pretty bold to claim that the issue with the guesthouse is the vampires, but then try to kick out the lone human! I wouldn’t want to be her lawyer with that argument.

Not as sure what to make of Do-shik this week though. Half the time he seems concerned and devoted and decent, and half the time he seems absolutely cool with aligning himself with Man-hwi (the only vampire in the show who meets his expectations of how monstrous vampires are) to brutally trap, kill, and devour someone. He’s going to need to do some soul-searching if he wants to sort all that out, but he only had one, short, potentially self-reflective moment from what I could see. And I wish him luck with the sorting out and with the curse, but not so much with his love interest or with the trapping/killing part.

I was happy they didn’t draw out the misunderstanding about In-hae’s dad. Their first interaction was pretty brutal to watch so I’m glad they reunited quickly. And it was good that U-hyeol and friends were the ones to rescue Dad, because I have a feeling our newly found parent is not going to be 100% on board with his daughter being romantically involved with a vampire. Even if he is as kind and handsome as U-hyeol. Speaking of, the whole interaction surrounding that line was so adorable. I need to go back and watch it again.

Hae-won has her moments doesn’t she? She is the worst, the delicious worst, I agree. But from her perspective, she was practically love bombed by Vampie—right from the first hug. And honestly, when he first rejected her, it was the first time I thought Vampie was unkind. Not privy to his slow change of heart, she must have reeled from the whiplash.
Anyway, I’m not defending her, just adding the teeniest bit of shade to the character.

I'm having trouble sorting through their timeline in my mind/what it coincided with in the rest of the story. Which scene are you referring to (for the initial rejection, I mean)? It's totally true that not that long ago they were walking through a field of daffodils and he was asking her to wait, so I'm sure you're right.

Oh, I am here for some Hae-won defense. She’s basically an indefensible cartoon cut-out, but this phrase “LOVE BOMBED” is amazing and quite accurate, IMO.

Who amongst us wouldn’t have melted under the powerful weight of Woo-hyeol’s initial hug on th driveway and ardent confession that he has waited for her for so long. And, as Unaspirated notes, he repeated his affectionate pleas for her to wait and stay near him enough for any sane human to be confused. That she’s gone a little mental—dare I say it—in the hands of a more elastic actress…she might have been as sympathetic as Do-sik. It wouldn’t surprise me if the writers had that in mind.

The way Taec has gone from using adoring googly-eyes on her to a sort of blank expression (which started in the art gallery) has, frankly, been one of his more impactful acting choices on me.

Ah, yeah, another actress might have been able to make her a little more empathetic, perhaps a script with more nuance too.

I was referring back to when he went over to her place and she showed him the scroll. His second rejection came this week when she came to his place. He was a lot nicer the second time around. But like you said, she was also being vulnerable this time.

2

Required fields are marked *

Oh, I think I 100% gave him a pass that first time because she was already being super under-handed. She had him investigated, stole something (by proxy) of great value to him, and then tried to blackmail him with it. To me his strong response was justified, and maybe not strong enough! She also stormed out of the party for essentially no reason, ruining an important marketing event. If he had rejected her before those interactions, it might have come out of the blue a little more, and I could see how she would have been more blindsided. But maybe she just doesn't understand that all those actions were unacceptable and violating and manipulative? Because then, yes, I can see how she would have had some whiplash. She obviously has a problem with possessiveness, which we saw from her obsession with the mansion before she even knew about U-hyeol, and which she shows us again and again as she reprimands Do-shik for letting someone else "take" the person he's interested in. Don't get me wrong, I'm having a blast watching her, and I'm sure in another drama she would have a tragic backstory so we could understand how she ended up like this, but she did so many terrible things before U-hyeol reached his tipping point/realization!

What I loved:
1) Manhwi being more evil and creepier than I expected. I am not gonna lie, I was clapping at the end of episode 13. Man hwi shocked me. He was so conniving, so underhanded and so evil. The way he captured Woo hyeol had me laughing. He literally walked into a trap. Am I a sadist? Possibly. But I love it when kdrama characters turn my expectations on their head.

2) In hae dropping all of these amazing love confessions. " I was swooning. It's been a while since I've seen a kdrama female lead be so steadfast in love. I seriously love her character so much.

3) In hae and So-i's talk. It was so cute. Seriously, they need to be besties. I 100% SHIP.

4) The early morning bro hug.

5) The conversation on the bench.

6) Do Sik coming through. I was about to lose faith in him after the whole taking Inhae's phone away, but he redeemed himself. For now.

7) Inhae's father being suspicious about Inhae's feelings for Woohyeol. Sir, definitely don't ask questions you don't want the answers to.

What I hated:
1) Woo hyeol not telling In hae that he's going to die. I know that I am overthinking this. I just feel like it is horrible to not know that your loved one is dying. Especially when everyone else knows. Especially when you live in the same house. I was literally screaming at my screen for someone to tell her. I was more annoyed by this than Hae won's antics.

P.S. In hae saying "Happy Blood Day" is so cute. I can't believe I haven't been calling Mondays "Blood Day" throughout this drama's run.

I thought Woo hyeol not telling In hae that he is going to die didn’t ring true. The thing I have loved about this show is that conflicts are resolved by talking and problem solving…even down to our two friendly vampires not having a place to live. Seriously - this is so rare in drama land, and I love when it happens. It seems to me that Woo hyeol could say “Hey, I can’t drink you blood because you would have to die. Let’s see if we can research other options here!” Like: how about she gives blood, and he drinks that blood over time!

It was the one part of the show that missed for me.

I love so much how the smaller, non main character storylines all link together to support the main story. Vamp girl smells blood. She sees Man Hwi. Turns out Man Hwi has dad, and captures our lead…it’s not just some random bad guy showing a contrast to our friendly Fang gang (love that name by the way).

They have a house. FL loses her job, ML and FL work with 2ML to come up with solution. Even the two nosy neighbors - suit guy indicates that dad was caregiving up until he disappeared. Nosy ox blood lady provides ox blood and a thirst for redevelopment…it all ties together.

So I really really love this! ❤️

I really, really, REALLY enjoy watching this drama so much! I know this week had a bit of filler but idk I just vibe with all the characters (well except Hae-won) so I don't even mind if they're not really doing much plot-wise. I’m not even thinking critically about it either, I’m head empty and fully engrossed in whatever is happening on screen in each ep.

I love our main couple, I love how good they are at communicating, looking out for one another and I just love them together. The vampire friendship gang has secured a place in my heart, especially after the way they came to rescue WH. I totally agree with the observation about Do-shik being misguided but still quite principled and I'm glad he drew the line with Man-hwi (though how blasé he is about killing vampires to drink their blood is 👀) so I too am hoping he'll turn into an ally in the end.

WHERE IS THE GOLD? I thought they'd uncover it maybe in time for when In-hae needed to pay money for breach of contract but that didn't happen?? And if her dad doesn't know about it either, who's left??? Did they just forget where they put it or something?

@minniegupta1 so am I! Since it's been a kind of reoccurring plot point though, I'm hoping that means we'll get a resolution!!

I didn't consider Hae-won/Hae-sun at all but potentially? But she wasn't in the country for the past few years right? Can't completely discount her because who knows what reveal they'll throw at us next week, but I also think Cat-man is primary suspect at this point!

It's interesting, because the word love hasn't come up at all, but he's very much indirectly said it and shown it through his actions. Since Cat-man just has Sparknotes knowledge of all this vampire lore, maybe once he really acknowledges it, Woo-hyeol's own love-filled blood can turn him human. No ridiculous sacrifices needed (those are as out of style as Hae-won's shoulder pads)

3

I was thinking about this too, that he hasn't actually straight up said it (which is quite new to me?? as far as K-dramas go?) but has definitely showed it through his actions. Very interesting indeed!

3

I like this idea as well. However, if his blood is already full of love, why is he falling sick?

Also, I must defend Hae-won's shoulder pads. How else will we know she's full-on 80s-style villainess? OK, the glass smash was a strong first clue. But one must dress the part as well.

Thank you, @solstices, for such a great recap. I tuned in apprehensively this week, with the burn of episode 12 still fresh. I am thrilled to say the show came back right on track! I absolutely adored the episodes this week. Character consistency is such a fundamental thing, and the writers have not only maintained that, but they have let each character evolve appropriately without compromising their innate nature, whatever that is (In Hae still flies off the handle when upset but is tenderly understanding when others need her, U-Heol still goes off on his own when he is stressed out but his empathy overcomes any thirst for blood he has).
I loved the dilemma Do-Shik faced with his partnership with Man -hwi. He has every reason to be wary of U-Heol. The way he tells In-hae that it did not have to be him, as long it was not U-Heol made me feel terrible for him.
Yes, some parts were a bit unnecessary. For example, why In-hae did not need to know where her father had been all this time was head-scratching. The whole 'overhearing' thing looked forced. But other than that part, the rest played out very well.
I hope U-Heol goes on to become the most powerful vampire, and we have our little vampans by the end of the 16th episode. Please, drama Gods, we don't need 16 episodes of fluff, but we need the 16th episode full of fluff.

Despite my mixed feeling about these recent episodes, and inspired by @hopefulromantic fan wall, I'm (rashly) calling this 2023's best* fantasy camp romantic melo. It's a fantasy overall, obvs. But the first third was such fun camp comedy, the middle, a lovely slow-burn romance, and now full on melodrama. I'm ngl. When Vampie wanders off in the wilderness (or local Seoul park?) and In-hae wanders around the street randomly, and the music swells...it was delicious, a wee bit ridiculous. So peak Oughts melodramas. They definitely stinted on the production. LOL.

I'm a bit worried how they will resolve all the open threads, however, and give at least a good chunk of love and laughter in the final episode. Here's what I have:

1) Woo-hyeol has to find a way to live, without killing In-hae
2) So does Do-sik, without killing Woo-hyeol
3) Gold must be found
4) Reincarnation twist must be explained
5) Not only must Man-whi and Hae-Sun be thwarted, but satisfactorily
6) Cat Man's neck must be wrung if he doesn't have a hand in resolving all of the above

What else? As for vampire lore/explanation? Give it up people.

* Yes, I am aware it may be the year's only such show. Tho to be sure, should I have added best *vampire* fantasy camp romantic melo?

Except for the vampire sidekicks rescuing Woo Hyeol, I did not like anything else. Can't help but feel that it should have been a 12 episode drama by having all the conflicts tied in a simple way.

1. Hae Won leaves the country after being rejected by Woo Hyeol.
2. Woo Hyeol tells In Hae that only either of them can live and then chooses to stay by her side at his last moments.
3. Do Shik comes to guest house to stab Woo Hyeol, but on seeing Woo Hyeol's sacrifice, does not kill him.

Conclusion:
1. Woo Hyeol's selfless decision to die becomes the solution for him to turn human because all along "Only one can live" rule was test of humanity.
2. Do Shik's choice of letting go of immortality in turn lifts the curse because it was another test of the limits of one's greed.

Everyone survives and we can watch them happily have another dinner banter in the guest house.

I admire the maturity that Woo Hyeol has shown these past episodes. Also I like In Hae's steadfastness in her love for him.
Do Shik has been annoying it his overprotectiveness. I didnt like how he does not respect In Hae's privacy and agency. He has no right to control her life. I know his intentions is to protect her but he is crossing the line.
Hae Won need to dial down her greed and vindictiveness if there will be a chance for her redemption. Since I know Man Hwi will 3nd up the villain in this show, and the SML and SFL may be redeemed by the writer.
Also WH's friends are so loyal and I like them a lot. Mr Koo is a different story. He is the reason for all this drama and I hope he figures out how to help WH, IH and DS' blood conundrum. I don't want anyone of them to die for the other.

While these two episodes were slower overall with the story moving forward, I found, like some other beanies, I didn't really mind too much honestly .
The Fang Gang took centre stage for a while and I really love them, they add a lot of depth to the show overall with their characters.
The two main characters had time for contemplation and also added more emotional depth over these episodes.
I have to hand it to Taecyeon, his acting has been on point so far, I really felt for him in these last episodes.
The female lead is smashing her character and I will look forward to watching whatever she does next.
The real surprise for me is the actor who plays Do-sik. I'm finding it refreshing at this late stage in the show that you don't know whether to cheer for him or dislike him, his acting has been exceptional.
I'm looking forward to the finale but also feeling kind of sad that it will end as this show has been such an unexpected delight.

Watching that scene of Do-shik holding the knife made me think that there would be some twist in the final episodes. Let's see if we are right. :)

Thank you for the recap! First time I am trying to verbalise my thoughts on a show here!

I did enjoy eps 13-14, perhaps being bore by all the fluff for another show had allowed me to appreciate some attempts of giving other characters depth and set us on a bit of an emotional journey before the final episodes.

I did get surprisingly sentimental and teary-eyed most of these 2 episodes, perhaps the slower pace had done some emotional voodoo on me as it drew out the relationships between the characters.

Examples:
- ML and his thought process on how he was afraid he couldn't control himself and put In-hae in harm's way, yet he was considerate of her fear of losing him and being alone. Even if he wasn't completely honest, I see that it was more of he didn't have the heart to let her know that the eventuality is death. But, he did bare the point that bugged him the most - he nearly lost control and he could barely forgive himself for that.

One thing I thought was... Hae-sun wasn't his first love. He still didn't know what love is, but her actions made him realise an element he had been missing, and yearned for that. He learnt about the concept of love from Hae-sun and her sacrifice made him held on to the promise. Whatever it is, nothing is gonna change my mind that his first love is In-Hae. He has felt the way he has never felt, like food he has never tasted and that is love, baby.

- FL and how when faced with the doubts of ML's intention, took the time to pause, and CHOSE to give unconditionally, she made a choice, and she stood up to 2FMLs to defend him and made herself heard. I like the choice was hers to make without needing assurances, explanations and on top of the implicit trust she has in him that he would never harm her. Even with these hurdles, and potential doubts, she chose to follow her heart.

- I would meekly admit 2ML's self-righteousness thinking he knows what is best without giving a thought to what In-hae truly wants (or taking her to be a damsel for him to rescue) grated me the wrong way intermittently, and I am not sure if ML is a vampire gave him the justification of removing him as a threat romantically. If it is all about vampires being dangerous, he would be on a crusade to kill all vampires. Did I remember wrongly that the earlier episodes mentioned to eat the heart of one, rather than just the blood? He didn't flinch with any hesitation nor emotions that he needs to kill something for his own needs.

But I like that he has the sense to distrust Man-Hwi and start to ask more questions and the sight of the dungeon bothered him, which gives me hope that he will start to see sense and be reasonable when time comes, and perhaps be on the same side I am on, redeeming himself, finding the happiness and health he deserves without coming between my couple. These 2 episodes showed me sides to him which I am starting to appreciate.

Hae-won - Aw man, I did mention somewhere in my wall that when...

@pikpokpikpok Your comment got truncated--there's a secret character limit. What Beanies usually do is just post the rest as a reply to their OP. If you like, feel free to delete your original post and try again...or just leave this comment and reply to your own with the rest of what you have to say as is.

We're reading! Even if you're not Team Do-sik :)

AHH apparently it was too long, and I covered Hae-won, Do-il, Fang Gang, Man Hwi... and they were all longer than the above.

I can't seem to regurgitate that anymore. /cries

Aw man, I did mention somewhere in my wall that when Hae-won had that chat with ML, I did feel for her and her desired to be love for who she is.

But urgh, her sense of entitlement returned shortly after and I remembered my compassion shouldn't be squandered that way.

I get it, who could resist love-bombed by Taec and not succumbed to that look in his eyes? I can only imagine that I would never recover from that hug. Granted he had explained to her she was but a mirage of his past but for someone who is entitled and is not used to losing, this has to hurt bad for this bunny boiler.

Okay, I shall try to recall.

Brief coverage: Fang Gang - didn't like them from the start cos too caricature-like, but grew to adore them for their loyalty towards WH, it feels as though they were also loyal to his values when they went human-blood free and lived by his values. PJ scenes.. aww. Am happy they were given the chance to showcase their vampiness in the fight scene, and my girl Rose continued to charm with her sass and power.

Do-il - I get it papa, it is worrying to see your precious falling for a vampire, but I hope you will come round to see why your family spent generations serving a top bloke. My hurt aches for In-hae, and I appreciate she was allow time to deal with her guilt for misunderstanding him all these years before they reconciled. I am not sure how I would deal with years of anger and abandonment issues and also have to deal with guilt if it was told to me from the get-go, I probably would be awkward and cry. I remember the misunderstandings with my folks during my younger days, and sorry was always the hardest to say, and we never got around to saying it despite having those guilt.

Man-Hwi - OH. MY. LORD. Fuuuuuu... I have no idea when my resentment towards him turned to attraction, he was absolutely delish in the dungeon scene when he emerged a full blown villain instead of the sneaky side piece thug he was. He must have been jealous of WH all those years ago and contributed to some of the most delicious smirks and evil smiles I have seen.

I love how you found something to appreciate/some understanding of almost every character.

Whether In-hae is his first or second love, Vampie clearly knows how to love. It makes his quest more quixotic. Maybe way back when when folks thought the heart was the organ of love. Now we have, you know, science. Of course, this is me talking science in a vampire show. 😂

Now that things have died down a little after the first run of these episodes, and I can expect to take less (delightfully well-meaning) crap for this: THANK YOU @solstices for both your lead image this week and the direct attention you’ve paid to including so many awesome songs from Park Kang-hyun in this recap. That this is his first drama was a gift to HeartBeat…clearly!
