The savage world of Celebrity with Park Kyu-young

It’s not all glitz and glamor as a social media influencer, and in the case of Netflix’s upcoming series Celebrity — and its new official trailer — the hidden savagery behind the scenes means deceit and possibly even… murder?

The delightful Park Kyu-young (Dal-li and Gamjatang) stars as Seo Ah-ri, a young woman who goes viral overnight and soon finds herself thrust into the life of the rich and famous. As we watch Ah-ri do her live stream and rake in followers, we’re asked if we want to know how a “bottom feeder” like her became an A-list celebrity.

Ah-ri’s entrance on the scene has surely caused a bit of a stir, and we see her old friend and fellow influencer Jeon Hyo-sung (Memorist) react, as well as cultural foundation chairwoman Lee Chung-ah (One Dollar Lawyer), who asks if she can follow her. Ah-ri even attracts the attention of workaholic CEO Kang Min-hyuk (Oh! Master) — who deserves to finally be in a role that’s as dashing as he is. (Can we make that happen, please?)

But as the trailer progresses, the glitz and glamor of Ah-ri’s new life gives way to the dark truth, and we are teased with the disturbing reality that Ah-ri slowly hints at: she was murdered by her followers. To make things even more crazy, we see her fellow celebrities panic over being exposed, while quick cuts of accidents and mayhem assure us there is a lot of drama to come. The new drama poster also sets up the same juxtaposition, with the myopic spotlight of fame conveniently hiding broken glass and blood splashes. Oh my!

I’m not sure how I’m feeling about this one, but my love of Park Kyu-young (and Lee Chung-ah) will probably get me to watch. If the promos are any indication, this will be a great performance for her, and there’s nothing like a heroine with a master plan — and an unhinged laugh — to make a wild ride.

Written by Kim Yi-young (Haechi) and directed by PD Kim Chul-kyu (Flower of Evil), Netflix’s 12-episode series Celebrity will be releasing on June 30.

I seriously cannot wait for A Good Day to be a Dog. I love the webcomic SO MUCH. It's my absolute favorite and I've reread it several times.

The subtitle "Very amusing" coupled with that stony expression is very reaction meme-able. I'm not usually one for serious dramas but I do love a female lead with a plan or vendetta, so I will be checking this out.

Hey, otherwise it’s just another forced-in murder mystery and where’s the uniqueness in that? Dramaland has no shortage of killers and terrible rich people, but they only have one Park Kyu-young.

The cast is enough to get me in the door for this even though more murder is a bit tedious for me.

I'm really interested! The trailer doesn't give too much. But it looks pretty and I like the actors.

So what is this thing primarily - social commentary thriller, whodunit murder mystery, something entirely else?

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one because I remember the last trailer I saw that looked this flashy and full of promise (The Fabulous) that ended up not delivering. The drama was so dull I genuinely couldn't believe it.
