Premiere Watch: Sound Candy

Time slot: Saturdays
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Youth, fantasy, romance, ASMR
Episode count: 10

Reasons to watch: Gauzy, pastel tone? Check. A barrage of cute idols? Check. Quintessential Jeju location for inner healing? Check. TVING’s latest little drama Sound Candy has flown quite under the radar, and sparks my interest for all the reasons above… but also because it’s been touted as an ASMR drama. The ASMR element is built into the story’s structure (and I use that term loosely), because it tells the story of a singer (played by Weki Meki’s Choi Yoo-jung), who’s dealing with a strange hearing disorder. She heads to Jeju for a respite and at her guesthouse finds a whole bunch of flower boy idols — from the cold-hearted superstar played by Kim Jong-hyeon (a.k.a. JR of NU’EST) to the long-time trainee played by n.SSign’s Lee Han-joon.

But more than cohabitation and hijinks (though I’m sure those will be aplenty), there’s the fantasy-healing-romance portion of our story. You see, our heroine finds herself in possession of some candy — “sound candy” to be precise — that has some very specific magical properties… and right then and there I knew this drama was a must-watch. There’s not a hot-mess combo on earth that I would rather see than bickering idols eating magical candy and achieving inner healing. Bring on the ASMR!

TL;DR: Some things are better watched than explained

"....and at her guesthouse finds a whole bunch of flower boy idols" it's almost like I ghost wrote the plot 😂

BUT in the biggest tragedy, it doesn't seem to be on a platform I can view 😭

I just watched the trailer on YouTube it’s like the opening credits on Chinese dramas that show the whole storyline. It’s just under 3 mins long! It looks like it is exactly my kind of show and I hope they do the two episode same day drop.

I mean, the point of this drama is the gorgeous cinematography of Jeju…I have that right, right?

Until reading @missvictrix's summary, I had no idea that ASMR dramas were a thing. I was vaguely aware of the ASMR youtube videos' trendiness during Covid, and actually watched a couple. They did nothing for me except to show me again that the power of suggestion can have very real physiological effects for people "you WILL find this soothing."

Of course, now that I know that for me ASMR is one more faddish Internet trend, the reverse power of suggestion is at work: "you WILL find this irritating." I'll check this out to see if it will be fun to scoff at, while lying under my weighted blanket.

What does an ASMR drama mean?

I’m assuming that it’s trying to sell itself as a drama that will focus on sound direction in a way that evokes ASMR-type bodily responses in the viewer. Plus there are lots of idols. So, eye and ear (ahem, sound) candy.

Why are the pics so ridiculously gauzy? Are they meant to be ethereal idols? No wonder the looks of some actors seem to be constantly being ‘ahem’ rejuvenated as who wouldn’t get a complex after the stage make up has been removed and there are no gauzy filters.
I am feeling more and uncomfortable about the extreme practices prevalent in the KD Industry.
