[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Drama characters watching dramas

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

This week’s treasure:

Drama characters watching dramas.

Your mission:

Find as many scenes as you can where a drama character is watching another real-life drama. For this round, we’re looking for the name of the show — plus the name of the drama within the drama. So, if you’re imagining something like Episode 8 of Love in Contract when our heroine gushes over Yumi’s Cells 2, then you’ve got the idea and are ready to play!

Reference drama:

Love in Contract (Episode 8)

Be Melodramatic Episode 1. Epic scene of the threesome plus gay brother watching the Fiery Priest and awesome commentary at that 👍

In Crash Landing on You Episode 1, North Korean soldier Kim Ju-muk watches the classic K-drama Stairway to Heaven instead of working. As a big K-drama fan, Ju-muk explains South Korean culture to Jung-hyuk and the ducklings by using K-drama tropes.

Later in the series, when the ducklings are in South Korea, Se-Ri arranges for Ju-Muk to meet his idol—the star of Stairway to Heaven, actress Choi Ji-Woo. It’s a lovely scene and a memorable cameo.

I should add that in the scene where they meet in a restaurant, Kim Ju-Muk and Choi Ji-Woo quote lines from STH that encapsulate so much of what CLOY is about: You said that people who love each other eventually meet, right? No matter how far you go… Love returns in the end.

Surely one of the more iconic 'Kdrama characters watching a Kdrama' scenes is the one in Legend of The Blue Sea when Shim Cheong gets introduced to K-dramas/media in general for the first time and she binges things all night - I don't remember exactly which dramas she was watching but I think at one point So Ji-sub is on her screen 😂

YES! that scene where she met with the ML's brother and kept drinking all the water on the table because she didn't want water thrown on her, because she saw that trope in a kdrama. I was DYING of laughter. like couldn't breathe, muscles hurt.

Am I tripping?? I feel like in ANOTHER OH HAE-YOUNG, the ML a sound engineer was working on scenes from the drama IN NEED OF ROMANCE 2012? But from my quick skimming I can’t confirm…
Now my stubbornness is getting to me and I’ll probably rewatch it just to get my vindication

I feel like I didn't take good notes because I didn't know there would be an exam later hahaha!

While this is a super-hard one (love those!! Like all k-drama treasure hunts!!! 👀🔍…💥🕺), I wonder if some additional trouble is made by international services snipping out scenes that contain other IP.

That is, I hear tell that Netflix (not Viki, though) removed the Train to Busan scenes from the hilarious movie theater bit in Goblin that we were discussing the other week so people would not have known it was there. (I mean that’s *an* internal reference to another piece of filmed fiction—but not to another drama, so maybe it counts like for half-a-point??!).

I love this scene because of the internal reference, but also because Gong Yoo has said in interviews that he really was scared of the zombies in that film and was always startled when those actors (still in zombie make-up) would ask for a photo or autograph on set.

There was a scene in Thirty-Nine where the third FL (I don't remember her character's name, but the one who had the romance with the chef) was watching Run On with her mother.

Drama characters watching REAL dramas? That's not fun, fake shows within shows are the best))) Made up makjangs from WELCOME TO WAIKIKI and A BUSINESS PROPOSAL still give me life with their crackstatic ridiculousness lmao.

As for the question specifically... In DOOM AT YOUR SERVICE FL pondered over question what it's like to be in love with/date a supernatural being and watched TALE OF THE NINE-TAILED Season1 to get that vibe. Her conclusion? It's no issue at all as long as the guy is hot))) Another PBY reference - in SOUNDTRACK#1 PHS's character was shown sobbing over a scene from WEREWOLF BOY movie.

Right? I can't remember which episode it is, but there is scene where the faux drama has a toilet flushing sound and then she magically appears--soaked--back in modern times. I would absolutely watch that show if it were real!

There is a very real drama about time travel through manhole, titled as such. Pretty close.

Honestly even real PPL gets crazy. THE KING: ETERNAL MONARCH was awful but the PPL saved it imo. It was basically one long infomercial, and I won’t deny I fell for some of it…

Crash Landing On You: North Korean soldier Ju Meok is watching Chuno. He is only up to Episode 14, when Se Ri spoils the ending. Later on when JM ends up in Seoul, he watches the ending of the drama in an internet cafe and is devastated.

I do not have the episodes references, and I do not always remember (or recognized) the title of the drama in the drama... However, there is (what I took for) a real drama on a small screen in
- Chicago typewriter
- Prison playbook
- Find Me in Your Memory
- Gaus electronics
- Zombie Detective (the last emperess?)
- Stranger
- Shooting stars
- Legend of the blue sea
- Doom at your service (Tales of the nine tailed, Start Up)
- Devilish joy
- Touch Your Heart
- Crash landing on you

And though it is not shown on screen, there is mention of My lovely Sam song in My roomate is a gumiho and Pride and prejudice.

Well... I was just describing by watchlist a few post ago in the "Surviving and thriving in dramaland" discussion: https://www.dramabeans.com/2023/05/theme-of-the-month-surviving-and-thriving-in-dramaland/#comment-4093661

"drama on tv in the drama" is one of the trope that I check... but apparently I'm missing the "title of the drama" and "timestamp".
(and I missed last week treasure hunt, but "nickname in photo" is also in my list... and that's a much more frequent thing).

It might be a personal quirk, but when an episode is slow I can find joy in checking the most absurd case such as "ppl (bag-less vaccum cleaner)".
I might submit a few "not yet trope" for future treasure hunts.

@dramaddictally One I thought of today while watching something—and this may be too easy/omnipresent—would be “house pets that aren’t cats or dogs.” Although, frankly, there aren’t a whole lot of cats and dogs either. I’m thinking snakes, mice, tiny fish, vicious fish…that sort of thing. Surely some villain somewhere has an alligator or something :)

3

@dramaddictally Thank you, you're making me blush and pushed me to act : I'm on to submit a few treasure hunts.

@attiton I could tell you how many aquarium I've spotted (17), but I'm not counting the pets.
There is a vivarium in Tell me what you saw with a lizard or a chameleon.

4

@darwi @attiton There's also a vivarium with a tortoise (although they keep calling it a turtle) at the ramen shop in Divorce Attorney Shin.

4

@darwi and @elinor WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE REAL HUNT!!! 😵‍💫 No cheating!!! 😾

😝

4

OK. I’ve half-a-mind to follow @linarrick down the rabbit hole. I trust @darwi here. I know Sh**ting Stars pretty darn well, and just watched Stranger. I can’t think of when this happened. Probably my memory, but I bet in one of these two (at least) they blurred out the screen for me.

I’m going to be in an airport for a while today and will scrub through these shows to try and find them.

Any Beanie who wants to join in on this is more than welcome! I’d love to know what you find.

I couldn't figure out which drama gets watched in Sh**ting Stars, but near the end the ML and FL watch the movie Nothing Serious.

In The Beauty Inside, the FL has the bicycle scene from ep. 1 of Pretty Noona on her TV in the background of one scene. And the famous handcuff kiss from W - Two Worlds ep. 7 made the ML long to be able to kiss a human girl in I'm Not a Robot.

At around 23m43s of episode 3 of Stranger (You meant season 1, right @darwi?), our initial victim is watching TV with his mom in a flashback (it’s actually a plot point, now that I think of it, b/c the TV was working…duh). They do show the viewer the show that’s on air, and the mom giggles at what’s on the screen, but I don’t recognize the show. There’s a big pink egg-like thing—it could be a variety show even.

Anyone recognize it as a thing they know?

My god though, Stranger’s a good show. Even scrubbing through it just now, I was reminded so strongly of how what you think evil looks like at the beginning changes into a whole other breed of evil by the end…

I know for a fact that I have seen Never Give Up on at least one drama-screen (and maybe two?) but cannot for the life of me remember which one(s). But it must be in the same network, right? So must be something ENA has done in the last year or so.

This is the second treasure hunt where I'm sure I've seen it but can't pinpoint where (the previous one was the phone nicknames).

I feel it's just recently I saw a kdrama character watching the "Saranghae! Saranghae! Saranghae!" scene in I'm Sorry, I Love you.

And a few years ago, unless it was all a dream, I saw a kdrama character presenting the end of Ruler of Your Own World as a successful medical case study.

I have no idea what the dramas are but there are scenes in You're All Surrounded when Dae Gu has dramas and anime playing on his phone as he sleeps. One example is in episode 3.

Do sitcoms count as dramas? I'm not even sure if High Kick (I think that's what it was called) is a sitcom and I'm not even sure if that was the exact title but Kim Hang Ah watched that show to try to learn the cutesy voice & gestures (and almost threw up in her mouth haha) in episode 8 of The King 2 Hearts
