The Good Bad Mother: Episodes 9-10
by lovepark
This week is all about backstories, backstories, and more backstories. As the truth gets unveiled piece by piece, our characters must choose how to handle the consequences of their actions. While our hero still remains stuck in the past, his future relies on moving forward, but whether that means finding his old self or forging a new path remains to be seen.
EPISODES 9-10
The show finally reveals Kang-ho’s story pre-accident, and if it was not evident before, they certainly make it clear now that our prosecutor sought revenge from the very beginning. After unlocking the memory card, Young-soon finds journal entries dating back to 2008, and the show recounts Kang-ho’s journey from law school to the day of his accident.
In order to understand why he needed to become a prosecutor, Kang-ho dug into his dad’s case but was met with opposition. The only way for him to obtain those files was to gain power, and thus, Kang-ho graduated as the top of his class. From that moment forward, his hunt for the truth began.
Even from a glance, Kang-ho found something off about his dad’s death, and the more he investigated, the more he learned about Tae-soo and Woo-byeok’s corruptness. Fully committed to his cause, Kang-ho cut ties with Mi-joo to shield her from his machinations, and turned his attention to wooing Ha-young as a means to get closer to Tae-soo.
One by one, the show discloses Kang-ho’s true motivations, and while on the outside he played the part of the evil prosecutor, in reality, he was always setting up the long con. The murder case involving Woo-byeok’s grandson turned out to be a ploy to keep the innocent man “safe” (a.k.a. out of Woo-byeok’s clutches), and the secretary who had an affair with Tae-soo actually fled to the Philippines thanks to Kang-ho.
In his last entry, Kang-ho writes that the statute of limitations expired for his dad’s case, but his revenge was never about his dad; it has always been for his mom. Despite all the terrible things Young-soon did, Kang-ho knew that she also stayed up at night to care for him, ate his leftovers as her meal, and kept all the drawings she ripped apart. This revenge is for both him and her against the men who destroyed their lives.
As Young-soon reads her son’s final words, the danger surrounding his plan dawns on her, and she springs into action. Ignoring Kang-ho’s protests, she gathers his old files, including the memory card, and sets them ablaze. She tells her son to stop and says that true revenge means forgetting and letting go.
To make sure Kang-ho never returns to his former life, Young-soon gets the idea to marry him off. (The logic is flawed, but she did drown her son to make him walk so…) As expected, none of the eligible ladies in town want to marry him, which works for Kang-ho since he only has eyes for Mi-joo.
While dressed up, Kang-ho visits Mi-joo at her shop and stumbles across a lecherous man fighting her. He jumps in to protect her, and the sight of Kang-ho wearing the tie she got him makes her heart flutter. In her attempt to scare the man away, Mi-joo tells the others that Kang-ho is a prosecutor, and poor Kang-ho struggles to reconcile his past and present selves.
Right then, a motorcycle comes near them, and Kang-ho instinctively pulls Mi-joo away. His past memories flood back to him, and for a moment, Kang-ho relives the time she got hurt on his exam day. He gives her a sweet kiss, and swept up in her emotions, Mi-joo leans in for another.
After getting Kang-ho’s backstory, the show presents Mi-joo’s side of the tale, and in an unsurprising twist, the twins’ father is Kang-ho. The day he broke up with her was the day she planned to tell him about her pregnancy, but she withheld the truth from him as to not deter his plans. Believing in their love, Mi-joo thought he would return once he accomplished his goals, but that dream died when she saw him going out with Ha-young.
In the present, Mi-joo wrestles with her feelings for Kang-ho over some drinks, and the object of her woes jogs by in the most inopportune time. He casually addresses her, which peeves Mi-joo, so Kang-ho blurts out that he likes her. He runs away after that, and Mi-joo watches him leave with even more questions swirling in her head.
Complicating Mi-joo’s already convoluted life is Young-soon who approaches her one evening with a request: help her get Kang-ho married. Mi-joo sees through her smile and recognizes that something must be troubling her. She refuses to help without knowing the truth, so Young-soon admits that she is dying. That night, Mi-joo tells her mom about her relationship with Kang-ho, and the next day, she dresses up the twins and takes them to his house.
A couple of other things happen in these episodes (some Sam-shik moments, bad guys being bad guys, the annoying singer, etc.), but most of it feels tangential to the crux of the show: Young-soon, Kang-ho, and Mi-joo. We finally get the full story behind our past lovers, and I understand why she kept the twins a secret from him for so long. That does not mean I think her choice was correct, but I am empathetic to her plight, both past and present. It makes sense that Mi-joo was understanding towards Kang-ho during the breakup even though it hurt because she knew his character. She never once doubted his love, so it must have been devastating to see him dating a rich, politician’s daughter because it shattered her dreams as well as her self-esteem. She must have felt so foolish in believing him especially since she was struggling to make ends meet while he rode around in fancy cars. As a result, I don’t fault her for wanting to keep the twins’ father a secret, but if the ending was any indication, I hope he learns the truth soon.
Though I find most of the scenes that don’t revolve around the main trio tedious, I did think Sam-shik’s moment in the police station was touching. While everyone else scratched their heads over Kang-ho calling Sam-shik his fiancé, only Sam-shik knew that he meant friend. It’s also a nice juxtaposition from the last time Sam-shik was detained and at Kang-ho’s mercy, but I wish the show built these scenes up better. The drinking scene and then the police station scene felt abrupt, and while Sam-shik has the potential for growth, he’s mostly used for laughs and mischief. My complaints about his character, though, are indicative of a larger criticism I have about the show: there’s too much going on in the background. Even the thugs who I found funny in the beginning have become recycled jokes, and I can’t believe the singer is still relevant to the story. While I like the actors playing the villagers, I have not warmed up to their characters, and I doubt the show will do anything meaningful with them this late into its run.
My grievances with Young-soon have not changed, unfortunately, and though there were moments this week that made me think she would reflect and repent, nothing happened. She repeatedly sticks to her selfish behavior under the pretense of love, and her actions feel more controlling and suffocating with each passing episode. Kang-ho’s backstory was all right in the sense that I got a better picture of our hero, but the last message about his mom felt like a bandage covering a festering, untreated wound. She is more than a “bad” mother at this point, and I hate the message that her actions are forgivable because she did them out of love. I’m happy that Kang-ho confronted her about her mistreatment, but I worry that his pleas fell on deaf ears. I understand that she has trauma from her past as well, but it does not justify her behavior. It may somewhat explain the contrast found in her character, but no matter how many drawings she hides away in the attic, it cannot undo the damage she caused.
Kang-ho’s backstory made me realize that he is much more similar to his mom than he thinks. Both Young-soon and Kang-ho end up hurting the ones they love because they believe good intentions outweigh bad behavior. As long as the results are favorable, any emotional damage that occurs along the way is inconsequential in their eyes. Both characters act like martyrs, but no one asked them to play this role. Kang-ho didn’t want to be a prosecutor; he wanted to do art and was good at it. Young-soon didn’t ask for revenge, yet Kang-ho took it upon himself to seek it out for the both of them. Mi-joo didn’t want to leave his side, but he thought she would be happier without him. They deny the other person agency, and ultimately, their actions stem from selfishness rather than love. It’s about what they want and what they assume is best for their loved ones. If they gave the other person a choice, I’m sure their lives would have panned out very differently, but then again, maybe that’s why Kang-ho was so hellbent on revenge to the point of self-destruction.

So this week we had an episode that moved the momentum (episode 9) and a mostly filler episode (episode 10). And your girl ain’t complaining one bit. I’ve pretty much given up on Young-soon so her not listening to Kang-ho for the millionth time didn’t bother me much.
But oh boy Kang-ho Kang-ho Kang-ho you cheeky little…I see what you’re doing mate!
One of the big questions I have is that much of the ‘recovery’ focused on the physical. But why aren’t they also focusing on his intelligence? At this point in the drama, ain’t no way Kang-ho is mentally a seven year old. Dude is too slick for that.
He was definitely fucking with the villagers and his mother on those blind dates LOL. Kang-ho is playing along, and I do still believe his naive nature but he is so using it to his advantage. The drunk scene just confirmed my suspicions. Those looks of uh huh suuuure and yeah handcuffs for a ring sounds about right, when he fully knows what the jewellery was for.
Literally going to the police station, saying it was a gift and that Sam-sik was his sexy fiancé was GOLD!
I don’t think he has the intelligence of an adult yet, but I’m guessing about an early teenager?
Mi-joo finally getting the screen time she deserves! Ahn Eun-jin absolutely nails (pun intended) her character! She’s so smart and understanding. Being able to read between the lines, but now it’s her time to SHINE. Watching her emotional turmoil over leaving her children, and understanding her choice not to tell Kang-ho to now watching her be brave and refusing to be pitied. She’s fierce as hell but why why did we have to end on a cliffhanger?!!
I’m gonna be an anxious wreck for the next week! Pls no sudden fainting from Young-soon or Chairman Song suddenly appearing. Don’t fuck with me show, give me and what the audience DESERVES!

I don’t think the word was “sexy” even though I heard it too. It was used a number of times by different characters and was subbed as “decent woman” and fiancée”. Anyone knows what it could be in Korean that sounds like “sekshi”?

It's 색시 (saek-shi). It means unmarried woman/fiance/bride/wife. It's sort of a general term to address younger woman but usually with the connotation of marriage/prospect of marriage.

Mi Joo, Mi Joo, Mi Joo. She is the star of this drama for me. Her empathy, grit, and love is just the best. That kiss between Kang Ho and Mi Joo was really sweet.
Sigh, she is the worst mother in the world, what in God's name possessed her to burn everything, why? My goodness, I just cannot. She should be begging her son for forgiveness and not thebother way around. Also her trying to marry off her son to unsuspecting women is the height of grossness. Ughdhdb

Mijoo all the way. I wish the revolting composer character didn’t exist - I wonder if there is a (marginal) point to his continued presence - and instead, we would get more of the twins, Mijoo and Kangho. Having said that, I wish they ease off on Yejin’s crush on Kangho and the “I want to be slim for my wedding” bit of indoctrination slipped in there. Can’t we have just something good without the real world intruding? Sigh.

Yes, that nasty bit of I have to be slim for the wedding did not go unnoticed. She is 6, gross.

I wonder if the hideous composer might become by default the cause of the downfall of the thug corp and the corrupt prosecutor running for President? Won’t that be something? Unfortunately, it would also mean devoting more time in the remaining 4 eps to that odious character.

I predict the composer will come full circle. From plotting the demise of the pig farm - to running the pig farm in the future.
By showing him some compassion - he’s going to return the favor.
If not - I’d like to punch him in the face.

@lovepark love your analysis about how both Young-soon and Kang-ho not only exhibit self destructive behaviour but hurt the people around them because they think they know “better”. That’s why part of me always felt Mi-joo deserves better! But I can’t deny their sparking chemistry and Kang-ho’s amnesia is his second chance to rectify his mistake, as well as for Mi-joo to get her answers and choose.

The revelations of the last two episodes did not offer any big surprises, but rather confirmed exactly what I had long suspected. Kang-ho is the father of the twins and he broke up with Mi-joo because he didn't want to endanger her in his quest for revenge. Also, I never believed that he had actually killed the mother and her baby.
I didn't find the scene with Sam-shik in the police station particularly touching, I was too annoyed with Sam-shik for that. Because he clearly visited Kang-ho and got him drunk because he wanted to take advantage of his momentary mental weakness to get the jewellery.
What was disappointing was how readily Kang-ho forgave his mother. While I can understand why she became like that because of her past, it doesn't excuse how she raised and now treats her son.
However, I still enjoy the drama, especially because of the scenes between Mi-joo and Kang-ho. I don't expect her to get around to revealing that Kang-ho is the father of her children next week. Probably Kang-ho will get his memory back before then and realise it himself.

I agree about Sam Shik. I didn't find the scene touching at all and I was even left confused because who reported him? I think he was arrested on the charge that it was reported stolen but how would the reporter know it was stolen?
Also the scene when Mi Joo asked Kang Ho if he wanted to drink with her felt like it was mainly included to set up him being a good drinker for the scene with Sam Shik haha.

I think on paper the scene worked for me (glimmers of Sam-shik turning into a real friend), but I agree, I think he is a real after-thought of a character with very little redeemable qualities. He's a bully who hasn't learned from his mistakes (I don't particularly care for his obsession with Mi-joo, either), and it's really just the actor that makes him bearable.

And, Yoo Insoo seems to be overacting a tad? It might not be his fault and that’s how the character was written but I’ve really disliked Samshik’s character. It has continuously grated on me.

I'm glad for the confirmation even though we all knew he was their father. That's one thing I definitely missed this week: seeing Kang Ho & the twins. It's cute seeing their awe of him and I kinda do wonder how they would react to knowing he's their dad. I kinda imagine Seo Jin being like "he's the horrifying bastard?🫤" haha
Ah, Kang Ho & Young Soon's relationship is so complicated. It was bittersweet how he came to understand her but that also meant being cruel to her. It's weird that for both of them, their efforts of protecting or loving each other is to be cruel or cold. I liked the moment when Kang Ho defended himself and asked why he couldn't he just do this one thing after everything he's done to appease her despite how scary or hard it was for him.
Mi Joo's mom's reaction reminds me of any case when I've seen parents support something in theory but not when it affects their child. I get it and I can imagine a part of her only saw the endless hardship and/or teasing that was in store for her daughter and grandkids with the reveal but yeah, that's still what came to mind.
I had weird mixed feelings about her buring all that evidence. As always, I totally got where she was coming from but then a part of me thought of how much he had gone through to get that and now it went up in smoke. Plus of course, wasn't that stuff what was keeping him alive because the thug chairman wanted to find evidence on the corrupt presidential hopeful? But I totally get it and it does change things a bit that he no longer has that stuff from his past. I'm glad he was able to hold on to his ID. He worked so hard and gave up so much for it.
What is the point of Sam Sik?! He's a loser criminal, he's a simp for Mi Joo, and then tried to scam an unwell person. Maybe it's due to the actor or maybe it's because he's not 100% malicious or evil (especially compared to the real villains) so he's not really hateable but I'm still don't know why he's needed. Was it for the undercover henchmen to have a connect in the town? Sidenote: I really like the genuine newbie henchman haha. I knew he would become the mask and a part of me wants him to not have to go down with the other villains. Let him to work on the farm and grow his lettuce. His rapport with the other henchman is fun too because he's though he's more of the straight man, his frustration is funny. Like he knows he's in a life or death situation but he's also stuck in this surreal farming cosplay haha
I liked Mi Joo's directness with Young Soon and I liked that Young Soon was finally able to tell someone. It probably makes her situation feel even more real but I think it's help she needed because despite their complicated history, Mi Joo is probably the only one who could or would look out for Kang Ho the way he needs or in a way that would let Young Soon feel content that her son is in good hands. I don't know how or when it would be revealed about the kids'...

...paternity but it might be nice for Young Soon to know she has grandchildren so she can make some memories with them aside from just "the pig farmer down the road".
So I guess the corrupt presidental hopeful's affair is a deux ex machina type situation? Kang Ho didn't reveal anything but by trying to save her, she still ended up dead under suspicious circumstances which will lead to an investigation. Initially, I didn't know what had washed ashore; I thought it was the baby and ugh, that is so heartbreaking. I wonder what is going to bring down that murderous jerk; his daughter's guilt or the thug chairman. I wonder if the investigation will go smoothly or are there more corrupt folks who will hinder things. I hope not because there needs to be some wins. Please let there be honest, competent detectives and prosecutors who are brave enough to go against the villains.
I really like this show and it's genuinely the only show I look forward to each week. I think it's going to be really bittersweet if the show ends with Young Soon's death. I wonder if Kang Ho will get more of his memory or will it fully return. Looking forward to next week's episodes.

First, wasn't there a twist with the mistress and she a) killed her child and b) didn't go to the Philippines? Or did I misunderstand the end tag of ep. 9?
I agree with your analysis of the show, lovepark, even though I've found myself just a bit more empathetic to Young-soon as time has gone on. It's not that I don't recognize her abuse as abusive, because I do; at the same time, I understand why she's acting the way she is, and life has been very unkind to her as well. Does that excuse her behavior towards Kang-ho? No. (Her burning his drawings was so incredibly cruel, just to pick one example of many.) But I've known women like this, who understand on one level that their behavior may rightly be perceived as mean, controlling, and traumatic, but who keep falling back on those same behaviors time and again because they believe it's the easiest, most expeditious way to protect their child and ensure their happiness.
The backstory between Mi-joo and Kang-ho wasn't really surprising except for two parts. First, that Mi-joo was that close to the friend who ultimately betrayed her, which makes that betrayal even more devastating. Second, I'm not sure I bought that Mi-joo would believe that Kang-ho would ultimately come back to her and that's why she didn't tell him about the twins. I mean, I know that's the explanation the writers are giving us, but I have a hard time accepting it. Pregnancy is long, uncomfortable, and both physically and emotionally exhausting. Plus, Korea isn't exactly accepting of single mothers. Add to that the fact that Kang-ho broke Mi-joo's heart and made her feel used, and I have a hard time accepting that she decided to lovingly support him by staying away while he did whatever he needed to do. It just doesn't ring true to me generally, or based on what I know about Mi-joo as a character.
But all that said--and putting aside continued annoyance with many of the side characters (Sam Shik is a total cartoon, and not in an endearing way)--I still really like this show, and am looking forward to all the reveals to come.

I thought the end scene of Ep. 9 meant that the mistress herself is dead - in Ep. 10 we get a scene in a police station where they've identified a body that washed ashore as that of the mistress. It was quite heartbreaking given how hard Kang-ho tried to save her. I'm hoping Kang-ho's fisherman ex-boss saved the baby somehow 🙏.

Yes, as @miso2019 said above, it seems that the mistress/secretary died. They show a shot of her stuff at the end of 9 along with a skull, and the officers in charge of the case talk about her passport being found in episode 10. I'm assuming this will be relevant in future episodes, so I saved off on it to address it then all at once. It could be a twist that the body is fake, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tae-soo had someone following Kang-ho the entire time and ordered the hit. The show also deliberately lingered on a shot of the assassin's tattoo in a previous episode, so he'll probably appear again. We don't know about the baby, though--maybe the baby is still alive??

There is something seriously wrong with young soon’s thinking process. It’s one thing to say “don’t look for revenge. Live happily”. But how does burning the only leverage you have over the bad guys protect you from them? Why does she decide “I know the right answer to everything”? UGGGHHH
Kang Ho getting dolled up by the ladies was cute, but Kang Ho clapping along with them every time was so adorkable. Dressed up villagers were riotous. I didn’t get a lot of MiJoo and the kids this week, maybe that’s why I am so grumpy.
Here’s what is bothering me the most about this drama. We talk about women having agency over their lives. But here this woman has completely denied him agency over his life. When she started hitting him(a 35 yo man) over wanting to be a prosecutor, I wanted to reach into my tv and strangle her. I was glad he stopped her at that point but she didn’t seem to want to stop. Going to MiJoo and telling her about him going on a blind date was manipulative and controlling even if it is done with a shy smile. It’s hard to convince myself that she is just ensuring he is taken care of after she is gone. GAH. It seemed to me like MiJoo is finally going over to tell him the twins are his. If that really happens, I will be happy.

She doesn't consider it leverage but as something to be killed over. If they have no reason to target them, they won't target them. That's the thought process.
She just wants him to live safely under the radar, she doesn't know that people are keeping tabs on him or still have a vested interest in someone who has the mentality of a child.

Absolutely agree! It blows me away that big, strong heroic leading men just let their mothers beat them and act like it hurts so bad, then turn around and fight off all kinds of people and obstacles like it's nothing--including knife fights, martial arts fights, Joseon sword fights, etc. But most of all, WHY is there so MUCH hitting in all of these Kdramas? Is it truly reflective of their lifestyle or is it a dramatic technique or "trope" to represent rage, conflicts, etc. This is the one thing about Kdramas that I vehemently dislike. Is hitting really a cultural norm in S Korea? Miseang was my first office drama and I was shocked at the physical abuse in the work place. Even the Bollywood shows I watch do not show "casual" physical abuse (rather is usually a beating at the police station or by the bad guys, but never a beating by parents/family.) This aspect of Kdramas MUST stop!!!!!!!!

Thank you, @lovepark, for your very interesting recap. I found it very hard to get through these two episodes and it is only Mi-joo and her twins who kept me going. She keeps her own council, is not easily fooled and does what she thinks is best for her, her kids and also Kang-ho.
I really have had it with Young-soon, trying to marry off Kang-ho. She shows no respect for him and the future wife, sees her only as a suitable carer for her son. She is not beyond fraud to have him married, dressing him up like an adult - all with the support of the villagers who fully support duping a young woman into a marriage with a 'stupid' man. She will be rewarded with lovely jewellery, that should be enough, shouldn't it? Kang-ho, naturally, has no say in this scheme.
The back stories were not a big revelation any more, who could have not guessed it all before? But, whose head did wash up on the shore there? That does not look good.

Young-soon's inability to truly understand how much damage she's caused her son has reached infuriating levels. We see her act shocked and taken aback every time she realises she's in the wrong (like when Kang-ho called out her controlling behaviour) and then she immediately repeats the same pattern of control, abuse and 'mother knows best'. I wanted to throw something at the screen when she burnt all the files (╯‵□′)╯︵┻━┻.

This. I am genuinely finding her behaviour hard to watch now. She seems to have no concept at all that her son is mentally seven and just keeps the abuse coming. I cheered when he called her out on her behaviour, but was horrified that this had no effect on her at all. Lady, he's just explained to you that he was terrified and in pain and struggling through the last so many months in an effort to make you happy; you give that 3 seconds thought at most and then are straight back to manipulating him into a marriage and forcing him to become a farmer. I do understand how she is terrified of him being killed if he goes back to being a prosecutor - why, why, why can't she begin to see that she is killing him by the back door anyway? In it for Mi-soo, Kang-ho and their kids now.

Not to mention forcing him into marriage was off of the conversation between 2 strangers on how "boys always settle down when married" 🙄. To take that and run with ignoring all logic and Kang-ho's well-being...😤.

Do anybody cringe when the twin girl saya she wants to marry Kang-ho? We know all along he is her father. Can't imagine when she finds out the strong oppa she wants to marry is her father? Like hmmmmm....

Definitely a bit cringe, but I overlook it because some little girls say that they want to marry their dads because they don't really understand the concept of marriage. That being said, I hope they tone down the joke soon, and I was not a fan of Ye-jin talking about losing weight to look good for a wedding... Korea (and society in general) needs to stop feeding young girls this message.

Good point about little girls wanting to marry their fathers. I liked the scenario when the kids commented that he had been like a kid, but seemed like an adult when he could walk. Transferring their love of "Oppa Kang-Ho" to being their Dad at that age shouldn't be a problem.
Interesting but true: if a kindergarten meets her/his teacher & teacher's husband in the grocery store, they often will think the teacher's dad is taking her shopping.

My take on this? The village chief's wife is really the daughter of a Yakuza leader that's why she's hiding her face behind the quirky face masks all the time. She'll end up using her Yakuza connection to pin down Song Woo-Byeok and Oh Tae-Soo. The singer/composer is really a detective trying to investigate or spy on Kang-Ho and the villains. Or maybe, he's there in search for the Yakuza daughter.

Thank you for popping in with this suggestion re ways to manage the two powerful foes as I don't know who can override the gangster apart from another gangster as he is dangerously powerful in his connections. I hope the mask woman does have some backstory of interest as it is so pointless otherwise. In a backwater village where outsiders are rare her wearing a mask makes her standout more and did her husband see her mask less otherwise why marry her she has no redeeming character features? She is like Kim Soohyun’s North Korean spy character in Secretly, greatly.

I hope so too. She does always makes sensible comments. And hasn't anyone wondered why she's wearing all those silly face masks? I can't wait for the next episodes to come.

Except didn’t one of the villagers make s comment abouthe composer’s lack of recent success? This comment implied that there was an awareness of that hideous character’s career.

True, true. But maybe may to spice things up, composing is just his upfront career. His real career is really being the korean modern version of Sherlock Holmes.

And we heard it officially - Kang-ho is the father of the twins! This is not a shocker (we already know about it) but still… squee! Oh my gosh! I must say this is my most favorite of all episodes so far. I think this is the first time that I felt giddy about this drama. Yes Show, bring ‘em all fluffy Kang-ho and Mi-joo.
And Mi-joo! I love her. She is sensible, strong and kind. I am rooting for her in all of her decisions. I am so delighted watching her and the twins marching towards Kang-ho’s house. Thumbs up to writer-nim for adding the scene wherein Mi-joo thoughtfully dressed up the kids to formally meet their father. It was a very nice touch.
P.S. The annoying singer still getting scenes and a new story arc at that, disgusted me. Seriously?! No one cares about his business. No one gives a damn about him. Goodness!

Yep. Unfortunately, there is likely to be a linkage so we have to suffer his odiousness until the end. I remember hating that actor’s character in “Happiness” too with a vengeance. That dude has found a niche in the KD world.

I hope you’re right, that he has some kind of connection with the chairman or anyone else. That way at least there’s a purpose for his existence in the drama. Because right now, I don’t see his relevance.

I wonder if “healing” is the term used in Korean for this genre? (@lovepark, could you please shed some light on this if you have time? thank you) was chosen because it allows for some venting of injustices and sorrows and not because it is actually therapeutic.

Yeah, the show is described as a "healing comedy" in Korea. I agree with the others; it's not very healing at all. Plus, healing is a very subjective drama descriptor in my opinion. I don't really understand the parameters.

Thanks @lovepark for the weecap. I enjoyed the backstory as I knew Kangho was playing the long game but when he put the woman on the boat I was convinced someone was watching them so when the body washed up I knew it was unlikely to be a random body. I also wondered what happened to the gold bars when Youngsoon was getting rid of all the evidence.
I agree that we seem to be dealing with more of the same with the ridiculous side characters. Samshik knows his parents are now at serious risk but rather than communicate he keeps trying random schemes that just lead to them being disappointed in him. When they showed the singer, like you I was thinking what is he possibly going to do or say that will move the story on. Even if he releases the secret about Youngsoon dying there is no gain for him financially which seems to be the angle they were going for unless that scene was just for us to see that he got his comeuppance. If that was the case, we clearly don’t care enough to rejoice, we just want him off the screen already.
I also thought the marrying off Kangho based on looks alone was ridiculous. He is being treated like a child one moment that has no say in his life decisions and the next as a responsible owner of the farm. He can not practice making good choices if he has choices removed when it suits his mum. I was so glad that he named all the examples of abuse and the impact they had on him so she knows she is not getting away with it.
I am glad Mijoo is now in a position to make an informed choice and that we are seeing signs of Kangho regaining his memories and maturity so by the end of the drama he will be a functioning adult able to make informed choices for himself. I am scared for him re the two evil enemies as fighting each other is fun to watch but if they still aim to take him down the daughter is the one who can stop her dad but can two minions undercover in the village stand up against a powerful gangster.

@lovepark: I have really appreciated and liked your weecaps. I’ve meant to write that much earlier but life intervened.
Within the miraculous recovery context of the show, I am thinking could it be possible that Kangho has remembered much more than he has let on just so he can experience some of what he never did or lost along the way because of his revenge plan? It also might offer him an opportunity to redeem himself with Mijoo.

I kinda hope that Kang Ho doesn't go back to 100% because it just seems like it would feel weird. I like the moments where he does remember things or acts instinctively but him just returning to his preaccident self feels disingenious to me (in theory. If they do end up doing it in the show, maybe it will work)
I chuckle at the idea of him, as he is now, learning that he's the twins' father. Like "I'm an appa?"

I agree. When he finds out he is their biological father, I hope he can process it given he still kinda sees them as playmates. I don’t want Mijoo to become a care taker as that is a brutal fate for her given her backstory. Given how unrealistic his physical and cognitive improvement have been so far, I want some more of that improvement so that he can become her lover and partner and not just a third child.

One thing that I've seen mentioned is about Young Soon wanting to marry Kang Ho off being this utterly ridiculous idea. It's "wrong" because she's basically trying to trap some woman into a caretaker role but the thought process behind it *does* make sense (if it were a normal situation). If he had people reliant on him or that he loved & cared about, he likely wouldn't put himself in a situation where they could be hurt or used. He would also likely be more careful himself because he has people dependent on him. (It reminds me of that Simpsons meme where Homer had the pictures on a corkboard that said "do it for her")
Would he have done his revenge scheme if he knew about Mi Joo's pregnancy? No, he likely wouldn't have and he may or may not have felt some type of way about it but he would've probably put her and their kids over his own feelings of unfairness and revenge.

Lovepark, thank you for the recap !
Ahn Eun-Jin is shining here.
Sam -shik’s mother telling Sam-Shik about the jewelry 🙄
Not sure how they’ll wrap the show up. Definitely want Kang-Ho and Mi-joo to reunite.
Then there is the darker side . Revenge ?
Is there enough Eps to do a proper “revenge”?
I don’t want a revenge to overshadow the hopefully lighter Mi-joo /Kang-Ho restoration.
Will Kang-Ho be a fierce prosecutor, rising from the 🔥 ashes, (thanks mom ), like a Phoenix ?
A good revenge would require that, not sure how they will pull it off.
Sad that the writer included a 3 Way Love Triangle trope, though Sam-Shik’s obsession has not reached Oasis Cheol-Woong level obsession, it really does not add much.

OMG--this drama is SO GOOD--"the feels!" Although there is a good deal of filler in most of the episodes, which help this Kdrama qualify as a "slice of life" genre, the pace can be agonizing. Episode 10 was so engaging, but frustrating: REVEAL those secrets and let Mijoo & Kangho get married, PUUULLLLLEEEASSE!
I'm doing my very best to resist looking at reviews, spoilers, etc. as I watch this drama. At this point it is a definite 10 and I'm hoping the Kdrama "gods" (writers, producers and all who control the plot) give me a perfect & happy ending for an up-to-this-point fantastic drama.
