Junho fails to woo Yoon-ah in JTBC’s King the Land

A new teaser has dropped for JTBC’s upcoming King the Land, giving us another generous look at Junho (King the Land) and Yoon-ah (Big Mouth) – along with our first look at some of the supporting cast.

The rom-com has all the makings of a classic, with our chaebol hero Gu Won (Junho) meeting his match in a bickering-to-love romance with hotelier Chun Sa-rang (Yoon-ah). But the road to love is never easy and the teaser begins with this very conundrum.

Opening with Gu Won’s grand entrance and the splendor of his (ahem) assets, secretary Ahn Se-ha (The Heavenly Idol) gives his opinion on Won’s problem. He has too much of everything, so there’s nothing that Won wants to have or  do. But the intermittent text screens then announce that there are three things that the perfect Won doesn’t have: a savings account, laughter, and dating experience.

We then cut to Won stammering as he practices asking someone on a date, and the skies respond with angry thunder and lightning. He is more assured, though, when he tells Kim Young-ok (Vengeance of the Bride) that he hasn’t yet opened an account. But when posing for a photo, Won struggles not to sneer and he tells Sa-rang, “Don’t smile. If you laugh, you’re fired.” So, Sa-rang curses in response.

In a special guest appearance, police officer Jin Seon-kyu (Behind Every Star) tells Won: “I could tell from the get-go that you’re new at dating.” This then leads to our hero’s secretary continuing to tease Won: “You have no humor or sense. No wonder you can’t date.”

Although a stubborn Won insists that Sa-rang is not and will never be his type, we all know that’s drama-speak for I’m falling in love. Using all his willpower, Won ekes out each syllable with effort as he finally asks Sa-rang out to dinner. But, naturally, we end the teaser on Sa-rang’s blunt refusal.

Directed by PD Im Hyun-wook (Reflection of You) with writing by Choi Rom, JTBC’s King the Land premieres on June 17.

I am soooooo looking forward to watching Junho in this, I know he will be excellent. Fellow beanies, I have never seen Yoon-ah in anything, will she be able to match Junho well, is she a good actress?

I don't think she is a good actress, sometimes she is passable, but she usually takes me out of a scene. That being said a lot of us for hopeful because our love for Junho outweighs our dislike of her acting. So here is hoping she surprises.

She’s not on you know who level, but I just hope she can be just ok-ish enough not to ruin it.

She's ok, imo. There are stronger actresses out there, it's true, but there are also many weaker ones. She's very middle of the road to me. I will say, based solely on this promo, that her line delivery has improved.

Her acting is NOT my cup of tea at all, however, she does have her fans who sing her praises as an established actress so I will acknowledge that maybe it’s just an opinion thing. I’ve always found her expressionless and bland, but that’s just me.

" I have never seen Yoon-ah in anything, will she be able to match Junho " <-- I have really liked Junho in the 3 or so dramas that I've watched him in.
However, since first seeing Yoon-ah in The K2, I can't watch her.

Junho said he got over 100 scripts after TRS and the fact that this was picked might be an indiction of how bad the other 99 plus were. Food for thought.

Their business is stressful so hopefully they enjoyed their time together but I don’t think it bodes well for me as a viewer based on the preview clip and the pictures.

Plus, "Red Sleeve" appeared to be extremely emotionally draining, so I can see why he might have been looking for something lighter. I'm sure a hefty paycheck and perhaps a creative/production team he likes may also have sweetened the pot. I try to remember that sometimes, what an actor sees as a great job may not exactly jibe with my definition of a quality project. But I do love when stars align and it's clear that everyone involved had fun, did good work, AND they created a show I absolutely love. Doesn't happen often, though, lol.

Very true. TRS must have been hard to do in parts. It was rough watching it too. As much as I loved his acting, it was such a problematic role and drama.
Like all of us, their jobs must irritate and drain them as not all acting jobs are pleasant, bearable or meaningful works of art. I remember working in a P/T job years ago with a former actor who mentioned how many actors treat their jobs as just jobs and nothing more. He said that except for the minority of successful actors, everyone else was worried about the next job and for the majority choice was a luxury. So perhaps critics and viewers attach much more meaning to acting than the actors themselves.

I guess it is the same as with most jobs. You choose from the limited openings who call you back for an interview. Then when you get the offer. Am I going to be paid well enough for my particular set of skills? Do I like the people here? The company culture? How's the commute? What are the professional development opportunities? How much will I be expected to work overtime? Do I risk passing this job up and get worse offers in the future?

They are friends ??
From clips where they danse together and appear on stage in adjacent position, I have the impression that he don't care a nanobit for her. He is colder than ice and never look in her direction unless it's in the choregraphy.
Have you seen their danse on a Michael Jackson song ? There is this moment when Junho seems to remember that he as to smile. Frightening.

It’s pretty well-known that the members of 2PM and Girls’ Generation have been close friends for a very long time (two of them even dated a while back). It’s not our place as complete strangers to judge and analyze whether it’s “really true” or not based on a dance performance.

It was not known by me.
It is true that intense concentration does not let anything pass through.

I don't care at all that they are friend or not.
I was just surprise to learn it, as I would never supposed it from their body language after the dance.

I believe he added that he chose this one when he saw Yoona’s name attached to it. That was after they burned up the dance floor dancing together to Senorita at MBC’s New Year’s Eve concert. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF3efrZ04Qo
Their chemistry may make up for her lack of acting expertise. And Junho, of course, could carry the day anyway.

I have this conversation so many times, among fellow hottest… he might have got those 100 scripts or even more but I doubt he read them all, he has managers to filter them, also the fact that he says 100 times sounds to me like when your mum tells you: I told you a hundred times not to do that.

I have been called a bad fan for saying such a thing, but I just think that is just an expression. My opinion and only my opinion.

This looks very old school romantic comedy, which could be just the light, fun, and frothy watch I need this summer. There are only two things I worry about:
1 - the writing going off the rails - no serial killers lurking around please!
2 - the female lead - I haven't finished a Yoon-ah drama yet. I want toile her this time, I really do!

They should’ve named the character Lee Junho. In real life Junho is basically driving sports car, doing adrenaline fueled stuffs, being a brat, throwing tantrum around, wearing apron but doing nothing, and just being so extra (he said he will bring a cruise when asked what to bring to a deserted island. That’s like bringing your house yo😑).

Not to mention the new still cut showed him working out in a black T-shirt just like in his I Live Alone episode lol.

Yoona and Junho still look way to sibling-y too my taste. Their drunk scene looks like it was filmed at Family Outing location.

I'm sorry, but I'm really struggling to even get past the title. Where is the "of?"

As far as the actual story, I don't feel optimistic especially optimistic, even though this is a well-produced promo. In a year filled with stronger dramas, I might have hope for this one, but so many hyped up shows (especially the romantic ones) have disappointed, that I fear this one with its missing preposition will be more of the same.

In short, Junho is very handsome and a talented actor, and Yoon-ah looks solid in this promo, but I'm not sold yet. Hope I end up pleasantly surprised.

Breaking out into giggles is a much healthier reaction than my extended grammar-rage! The way the title completely misses the mark feels like a harbinger of the show's quality. It's as if they named an entire drama after one of those sweatshirts with nonsensical phrases or names in English that appear in so many shows.

[deep breaths]

The native title is the English phrase "King the Land," an awkward and meaningless construct, transliterated into Korean as 킹더랜드 (Kingdeolaendeu). Who knows where or how the production team came up with that, but I'd be surprised if Netflix doesn't change the streaming title before it airs in order to appeal to viewers outside Korea, just as they changed Sunbae, Don't Put on that Lipstick to She Would Never Know.

There's a remote possibility I've had too much coffee this morning.

I hadn’t noticed that the title in Hangeul was actually the English title transliterated! I suspect you’re right in that Netflix will change it because it makes no sense as it is.🤣

A game to keep children entertained when driving is to look at the vehicle number plates and try to make words out of the letters. I think they use the same approach when naming K dramas and Ikea furniture🤣

If it helps lol, my guess is that they meant "King, the Land" since "King" is the name of the conglomerate. Or, it's just Konglish. 🤷‍♀️

Off-topic probably, but I've always disliked these more generic-sounding changes to the international title. I know that on some level, localization happens everywhere in every industry, but I can't help but be a little disappointed and feel that these drama titles often lose their Korean uniqueness and quirks in translation. Changing a title as distinctive as Sunbae, Don't Put on that Lipstick to the very boring sounding She Would Never Know was just baffling to me.

That said, I support changing the King The Land title because its gibberish and as uninteresting as a drama name has ever been. It's just regular transliteration, and not a particularly good one either. This might be one of the few instances when the change actually helps rather than detracts from a drama's characterization. Because the current name comes off as rather lazy and half-assed from the production.

‘Changing a title as distinctive as Sunbae, Don't Put on that Lipstick to the very boring sounding She Would Never Know was just baffling to me.’👈🏾 it’s the complete lack of connection that and Something in the rain which also has no connection to the original Pretty Noona who buys me food, which you can imagine is a reflection of when his feelings first started to grow.

4

To keep the original title "Sunbae, Don't Put on that Lipstick, they should keep the Korean words like Sunbae, hyung, oppa, noona, etc. in the translation first. Otherwise it doesn't make sense. The same for Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food.

Netflix doesn't keep them and put the names of the characters and it's sad. Viki's translation is better for that.

3

Konglish is interesting. As far as I know (given my limited knowledge of Korean), it incorporates both English nouns and verbs in both familiar and unfamiliar ways. For me, it is always fascinating to see how languages borrow from each other and how often the colonial and imperialist imprint of history could be seen on them. One of the intriguing Konglish usages is “화이팅” “hwaiting” which is derived from “fighting”. I read a likely apocryphal story about this word a while ago. It recounted that during the Korean war, American troops organised boxing matches and the Korean audiences adopted the word as an encouragement for the completion of an unpleasant task. And, the rest is history.

@drabea: You’re right that “왕” means king in Korean too. The Korean pronunciation of a syllable block which ends with “ㅇ“ (approximating an “ng” sound) de-emphasises the hard consonant sound so it does end up sounding like ‘won’. I assume this is what Eazal meant.

3

It’s a stupid name, but it’s supposedly states for King, name of the family (Won) and the hotels, and “The Land” is the name of the hotel lounge where Sarang (YoonA) works.

Netflix could change it to “The Land or the King” which given your explanation and their supposed conflict actually would make semantic sense. And, it would still be somewhat reminiscent of the original title.

1

Eazal, " it’s supposedly states for King, name of the family (Won) and the hotels,". <- I appreciate your insight. I had wondered (without doing any research on the drama) as a small possibility, if it was like the checkers term, "King me" -- to "King the land" or take over.

By the way, I'm really sure that the Chinese and Korean word for king is 왕, "Wang" (that's my son-in-law's name).
Isn't "won" the word for their money, like "dollars" or "pounds"?

I agree with those who don't like the drama titles and CC/subs that take all the Korean nature or substance out, by replacing unrelated title terms and doing things like always using names (which is a western habit and more familiar) instead of the very common, more honorific Korean titles or relationship terms like "hyung", or "sunbae", that every Kdrama watcher learns very quickly.

3

It is as confusing as “One the woman” 😂
