The Secret Romantic Guesthouse: Episodes 11-12
by mistyisles
In the wake of last week’s reveals, our characters navigate shifting relationships and ever-mounting political tension. Everyone wants to protect the ones they love, but the question is: can they do that without putting themselves in even more danger?
EPISODES 11-12
Now that we’ve identified our Watchman, we get a little more insight into how the Watchmen, as a faction, operate. They train from childhood at a mountain temple, and when two or more are permitted to go out in public together, one addresses the other as royalty — likely for practice, secrecy, or both. (Ah, so that explains why Shi-yeol’s teacher called him “Your Majesty” before!) Shi-yeol isn’t fond of being on the receiving end of this custom, and I’m not sure he approves of raising up new Watchmen generations in general, but he does what he can to encourage the young ones who are already training.
The other important thing to know about the Watchman is that, barring death (presumably), only his master becoming king can release him from his duty. In other words, if San fails or refuses to take the throne, Shi-yeol must continue to follow and protect him from the shadows for the rest of his life.
Though San makes a point of warning Shi-yeol not to let anyone know he’s the Watchman, he’s still the teeniest bit irked when Shi-yeol slips right back into the playful, teasing Shi-yeol everyone’s used to. Especially when Shi-yeol forgets (or pretends to forget) to reel the casual language back in once they’re alone. He’s also rather embarrassed to learn that Shi-yeol has overheard most of his exchanges with Dan-oh. But on the upside, there’s no fear of the Watchman killing Dan-oh as a liability, considering he’s one of their biggest shippers.
Mild annoyance aside, though, San cares deeply for his Watchman. Not only does he express remorse for not recognizing him sooner, but he also frets over Shi-yeol’s safety almost as much as Shi-yeol does his.
As San prepares to strike the king (alas, shooting an arrow through the king’s heart was only a fantasy), he shows Shi-yeol a safehouse he’s procured. If anything happens to him, Shi-yeol is to bring Dan-oh and the Ihwawon family here — and, if a choice must be made, Shi-yeol is to protect them and himself, not San. Shi-yeol doesn’t like this order, either.
San may need a lot of watching over, especially given how reckless he can be, but Shi-yeol still finds time to take Hong-joo on little outings. Since they’ve both led restricted lives, this is their chance to do all the things they never could. One day, when Shi-yeol catches her waiting impatiently for his visit, he tentatively leans in for a kiss, but she’s not quite ready yet.
Later, however, she asks him to accompany her to her late fiancé’s grave. Shi-yeol steps back to give her space while she says her goodbyes. All these years, her body has kept living while her heart felt dead, longing for her lost love. But now that Shi-yeol has helped her open the doors again, she’s ready to live on as her true self.
As for our other lovebirds, Dan-oh wrestles with conflicting desires. She wants San to leave for his own safety, but she also doesn’t want him to leave her side. It’s a problem, because there’s no denying the danger of their proximity. Though Dan-oh sticks to her claim that she hasn’t met Lee Seol since they were children, the king decides to test it. He has his guards follow her, trusting that Lee Seol will come to the rescue if she’s in danger.
Fortunately, San anticipated this. At his request, Shi-yeol shows up as Watchman and “threatens” Dan-oh, giving San an excuse to step in and run off with her while Shi-yeol throws the other guards off the scent. When they pause for breath, San confesses that the reason he wants to become king is to protect the people he loves. As they kiss amidst the falling snow, Dan-oh’s worries melt away.
Now they’re officially a couple and a team, so San asks Dan-oh for help: he needs her to lie to the king’s face that she’s being threatened into silence by Lee Seol and his bodyguard. Dan-oh plays her part well, and the bodyguard lets himself be seen and almost caught, seemingly confirming Dan-oh’s words without putting anyone in immediate danger.
For added peace of mind, San starts teaching Dan-oh archery. And since Dan-oh doesn’t want all of Ihwawon to see them canoodling, they agree on a secret signal (a literal meow!) for when San wants some alone time.
Meanwhile, Minister Shin, Hwa-ryung, and Yoo-ha rally their supporters, Minister Shin adding new prophecies to the book so as to further strengthen Yoo-ha’s position. And yes, Hwa-ryung is indeed Yoo-ha’s mother, though she has no intention of telling him.
As the revolutionaries lay their plans, they bring in two important people to increase their credibility. First is the queen dowager, who weeps for joy in Yoo-ha’s arms, smiting his conscience. Next is San’s bodyguard, who reports his observations to San… only for Yoo-ha to accidentally intercept the message. It’s hard to tell if Yoo-ha is more upset by the revelation that San is Lee Seol or by the fact that he’s practically the only one in their circle who still didn’t know, but he’s most upset that Dan-oh’s heart is with San and it’s putting her in danger.
At the next revolution meeting, members unmask themselves one by one as they sign their names in support of “Lee Seol.” San, who has followed Yoo-ha, watches in dismay. Afterwards, Yoo-ha asks Minister Shin what he plans to do if the real Lee Seol shows up. Unsurprisingly, Minister Shin’s answer is that there can only be one sun in the sky, but he doesn’t specify which “sun” he’d pick given the choice.
While Yoo-ha processes what this might mean, San leaps over the wall and unmasks him, holding him at sword point to ask if he really is his half-brother.
Is it too much to hope that Yoo-ha’s conscience will win out sooner rather than later, and that he and San can work as allies (secret, if need be) to take down the king and then sort out throne rights and such in a way that doesn’t get one of them killed?
Disappointed as I was when Yoo-ha said he only cared about Dan-oh’s safety and not Lee Seol (because what about his friends who have died for the cause?), I’m even more concerned by the fact that he appears to be setting himself up more as a scapegoat than a king. He’s hinted more than once that he’s prepared to be cast aside if it’s necessary to raise up a new king. But I’d love for him to be more than just a jealous second lead who eventually comes around and sacrifices himself so San can succeed and our lead couple can be together.
But I have to say, well played again, Guesthouse — because I didn’t worry much about who would end up on the throne in the end until you tied it to Shi-yeol’s freedom and ultimate happiness!

This show continues to be a low-key delight.
Random Thoughts:
--There have been so many scenes of Yoo-ha giving Dan-oh and San major side eye, that it's absurd that he didn't realize they're in love. But I guess he simply didn't *want* to believe it, so he chose to ignore it for as long as he could. I like this character, but I, too, worry that his jealousy and disappointment over Dan-oh might become his primary motivation, which is basically character suicide. He needs to start paying attention to a certain courtesan (the one who's not his mother) instead of pining for someone who sees him as a brother and nothing more.
--I really liked the banter and obvious caring between San and Shi-yeol, who is truly the most interesting guy in the trio as far as I'm concerned. He's loyal, but not an automaton; he's secretive, but not afraid to make it clear that he's infatuated with Hong-joo; and he's a great fighter.
--I knew the San/Dan-oh kiss was coming the second it started snowing, but I wish it had happened earlier when San and Dan-oh were alone in her room the evening before. That would have seemed much more natural and, frankly, made more sense than them taking that moment when a) they'd just barely escaped death and b) they didn't know if the Watchman was ok and c) they were out in the open. It wasn't a bad kiss, but felt very choreographed, unfortunately.

I'm not sure if he'll suit a certain courtesan's fancy, at least for now. Girl's got her sights on San and San alone.

I really feel for Yooha as he has made a terrible mistake trusting that Minister. He is very likely to be cast aside sooner rather than later and I don’t look forward to seeing his transformation into a jealous and solipsistic antagonist. He has been so likeable and bright so far and I hope he can see that there are other fish in the sea.
And, Shiyeol is definitely the most well-rounded and fascinating of the three. Kang Hoon really should be commended and celebrated.

You do not have a reason to shy away at all.
Kang Hoon has no romantic arc whatsoever with the FL. He has a romantic arc of his own different from the main leads and it in a different league from that of the leads. Tbh I am enjoying his romance arc more than that of the leads or the love triangle.

One of the great things about this show is that they are consistently giving all three of the male leads pretty much equal time and nice character plot/arcs. Its a genuine ensemble show, and the interactions between the main characters are building up , so I have good hopes this will intensify, not dissolve into total focus on San as ML. Definitely a watch!

But I’d love for him to be more than just a jealous second lead who eventually comes around and sacrifices himself so San can succeed and our lead couple can be together.
I'm with you here @mistyisles. He not thinking in that moment about his friends who died for the same cause Dan-oh is abetting took away the purpose for which they died almost immediately. I'm sure he just lost a screw or two and Yoo-ha will be back.
They just should not set the brothers up as enemies. It won't be nice at all. And if he ends up being a sacrificial lamb of some sort, it won't be nice at all. But I was quite surprised and disappointed that San's first line of action was to draw a sword at Yoo-ha's neck after he knew his identity as Lee Gyeom. You guys are housemates over there at Ihwawon. I applaud San jumping over the fence to confront Yoo-ha, that's a rational thing to do. Drawing a sword at his neck? Very uncalled for. I'd prefer dragging him to a secret backyard and ask what in the name of whatever is Yoo-ha doing impersonating Lee Seol? Especially when he knows that Yoo-ha is Gyeom.
And, that Royal Bodyguard, not Administrator Jang, the one who winked at Kim Chin-won. Is he a Mokinhoe loyalist or a loyalist of Lee Seol. I'm surprised at how quick and effortless he is to draw a sword at Lee Seol. I don't just know where he stands.
And to the romance that holds my attention - Shi-yeol and Hong-ju. I just can't get enough of them two. However, just as much as I can't get enough of them, I can't help but worry for the future. We learnt that Shi-yeol has been Sam's watchman for how long now? And her fiance died 8 years ago. If it so happens that he's the watchman that struck down the Six Swords, it'll be a big wrench thrown into their budding yet already fluffy romance. I kind of congratulated Hong-ju when she paid a visit to her late fiance's grave and said she is ready to live a life for herself now, I could not help but think about how his accompanying her to his grave and his presence behind her as she bade goodbye to Jang Hyun might be foreshadowing "She fell in love with the man who struck down her fiance in battle, and vice versa for Shi-yeol". It'll be a tragic fate I do not want them to live through.
But my worries aside, it was so nice to see Hong-ju be willing to risk being discovered when she noted that Shi-yeol was not on time. The tender air she blew on Shi-yeol's hurt wrist...🤭🤭👌🏽👌🏽. My lady is ready to take a man into her heart once again and all I have to say to Hong-ju is : Fighting!!!

"And to the romance that holds my attention - Shi-yeol and Hong-ju. I just can't get enough of them two. "
Me. Me-me-me. I love them to death. Actually I love HIM but she is also very special/unique in her own way. When Shi-yeol said that he wanted to experience new things with her (I forget which Ep), my heart melted. That's why I love them - they are far more UNIQUE than the trope child-connection-destiny of Kang San and Dan Oh. Not that I dislike KS/DO - but my heart doesn't melt for them. EVER.
I haven't read the novel (I guess there isn't an English version anywhere) so perhaps most of the focus is on KS/DO. But I wish the drama was even-handed with the three guys - all of them clearly heroic and noble.

Thank you, @mistyisles, for the weecap! Every time Shi-yeol forgets to add "yo" at his sentence when talking to San makes me laugh. I'm also thinking the minister will abandon Yoo-ha when San shows himself. The part I liked best in these episodes? When the pair of Shi-yeol and Hong-joo meet San and Dan-oh on their own "dates"!

In reality, he should add “imnida” (phonetic approximation) as a suffix to verbs because of San’s status. He did that when they first met in that field after San ordered him to unmasked himself.

He was very formal with San up until the point when he told him to act as normal. My Korean is very very rudimentary as yet, so correct me if I'm wrong but seemed that in that disclosure scene he actually used the highest possible speech level used normally only to a King (obnida), and title pe (Lord/master, related to peya, emperor???), then called him Mama (highness) on walk back with next speech level down (bnida/seumida) before reverting to normal casual - only to have San look totally disconcerted.
And in the scene about not harming Danoh he went back up to ultra formal (even while teasing him about overheard conversations etc).
The 'yo' scene came after all that, but was pretty funny!

Just one of the many reasons that I cannot enjoy San. Yeah, he's a prince and he is Shi-yeol's master but does he want everyone to die because of honorifics?

I have some questions about the business model of Watchman, Inc.
- There's a whole organized Watchman school with lots of students. Where does the money come from?
- Watchmen exist only to watch over a prospective future king? Who decides which candidates get Watchmen?
- If more than one candidate at a time can have a watchman, what if they get into a succession dispute? Did our current evil king have one?
- How do they recruit trainees? Do kids volunteer for that life? Do their parents sell them into it? Is kidnapping involved? Kpoop-style slave contracts? Total lack of informed consent?

For Q1, I think they mentioned, in one of the earlier episodes, that the Dowager Queen finances the Watchmen - a fact that seems to be known to the King and his minions too. For the rest 🤷♀️.

Indeed - finances seem to come from royal family, currently queen dowager, but unclear how much say she has in who gets guarded! Or indeed whether they are supposed to play an active role in who gets to be king (as opposed to who gets to live).
And from what we've been told so far, seems to be more than one watchman, we were told they each don't know who the other is watching. So is there one for Yooha, or was he was his existence too secret?
It certainly didn't sound like the child watchmen got much choice about it - probably government slave orphans??
Although highly implausible at this point I'm still kind of half hoping the might turn out to be lesser royals so the final twist is Shi Yeol gets to be king (ok so not going to happen but)!

Or an ex-watchman (if the rules of being freed are applied). And is this the identity of the royal guard we keep getting shots of? If so, is he staying in the wings to wreak bloody revenge on the current king, or has he chosen to stay to protect?

I just started this drama over the weekend and binged (rushed/FF) through 10 episodes to get to the big reveal (which was hinted at on MDL) before Ep. 11 on Monday.
I was fascinated by Shi-yeol - and the actor who has portrayed several different "personalities" in this drama. Which also led to me starting to re-watch episodes that I rushed through to learn about the Watchman. So I have some of the same questions as you (and some were answered below by other commenters).
I want to know - and I hope we eventually learn - did the "deposed Crown Prince" (who perhaps never became "King"???) have a Watchman? Did the Grand Prince Geum Ryeong (another brother?) have a Watchman?
If the Watchman is supposed to be near a designated royal at all times, WHERE WAS THE WATCHMAN when the young Kang San fled together with his nanny and Moek See (archer/boydguard)?
King Hong Ik (Shi-yeol's alleged biological father) is clearly tied into the Watchman group. And he seemed to understand Shi-yeol's plan (except I never quite understood why he wanted to be captured).

And to add to your list of questions, what happens to a watchman who fails to protect his designated royal? I have a bad feeling...
On where was the watchman when child San hid out in the doghouse, it seems to me there clearly was one there (possibly even Shi Yeol though age wise that is stretching it) since ShiYeol clearly knew about the incident and expected him to head to Ihwawon (hence his efforts to run into Danoh and inveigle his way in). So either he was there in person, or someone else passed on the story to him.
But there general modus operandi seems to be only to actively intervene if absolutely necessary - so if he was actually found when those soldiers came, presumably would have jumped out...

Perhaps the age/timeline has previously been discussed, but my calculations are;
13 years ago - the coup/rebellion
8 years ago - the ambush. It appears that Kang San was 13 years old (that's when his nanny requested help getting him adopted).
So, Kang San is now ~21 years old. Which means he was 8 years old at the time of the coup.
I don't believe a young Shi Yeol would have been the Watchman assigned at that time. I think the incident 8 years ago was his first assignment because during the fight, he struggled, he was badly injured and was almost killed by Tae-hwa. And he wasn't able to complete the job of killing Tae-hwa.
Tae-hwa said that the Watchman's skills had improved more than expected and he was surprised he did not kill anyone (in the recent encounter at the temple).

I think you are right about the reconstruction of the timelines, but I'm assuming that Shi Yeol is at least six or seven years older than San, based on the age differential for the actors in reality.
None of those baby watchers looked much older than early teens at most, so maybe at a certain age they get sent out perhaps as apprentices with an older watcher like Shi yeo's monk?
Wish they would show him secretly training with him or something, but maybe that's a reality touch that is a step too far for this drama!

I now suspend judgment on what I can accept and what I can’t. I was laughing at the absurdity of the white kerchiefs being used as half masks but thought, I’ll let that go. How San can live in Ihwawon without anyone knowing at the Palace at this juncture is not something I can accept though. How have they not tailed him to find out where he lives? And, all of his indiscretions and impulsiveness should have put him in really serious jeopardy by now. All of those bits have been bugging me and I find it really difficult to take him seriously. The writing has been really sub-par so far on that count and Ryeoun mostly doesn’t elevate the unfleshed out role afa I’m concerned. In contrast, Kang Hoon’s character - with all of its implausibilities and mysteries - not only has had a more intriguing and layered persona - but Kang Hoon has enlivened Shiyeol in a way which is often moving even when he plays the Inn jester. He comes across as an actor who is not only in the moment in every scene but has calibrated his responses previously to deliver the best version of his lines.

I couldn't agree more. I think I'll have to FF-rewatch this drama focusing on Shi Yeol scenes. It's not that I didn't pay attention to him since the beginning (on the contrary, I was always looking at him), but I think this character deserves a rewatch.

You and me both @mistyisles! Not just because Shi-yeol is awesome but also because it'd be too cruel to Hong-joo otherwise.
The show definitely seems to be trending towards at least one dead flower boy from our main trio and I hope it bucks that trend. I'm looking forward to San and Yoo-ha's conversation next week. Maybe they'll solve everything through communication and work together (hey people can dream!) 🙏.

Thanks for the recap.
Although I'm still enjoying this, I have to admit I'm finding this all a bit slow at the moment, with too many things being dragged out unnecessarily and not much progress on the overall main plot.
First we had two episodes of several characters angsting about what they now know about who is who (esp Yook Ho, Ban-ya) but not actually deciding what to do about it. I think this trope is now a bit overcooked – so go ahead and betray him or not, just make a call!
Though I suspect we have at least one more round of this to go in the form of the royal bodyguard who signed up at same time as San – I’ve been wondering for a few episodes now if he might be another watchman covering the palace, one of the six Swords Jang group, or a plant aimed at San by Left Minister (why after all, did he attend that military exam?)...
Second, we still have no real sense of either lot of rebels’ actual plan is, but what we know so far just makes them all look like fools. San just seems to have some vague hope of getting the king almost alone and then killing him; the revolutionaries haven't got beyond spreading prophesies and signing pacts aimed at making it easy for the king to punish all the traitors (I'm still suspicious about what Left Minister is really up too...).
Third we haven't really advanced on what Administrator Jang/evil concubine's grand plan(s) are either. Is it nothing more than a long term plot to get her in place as Dowager, offspring (or fake offspring) on the throne and then kill king, hence his two lots of failed six swords secret boys, pushed on by a desire for revenge against watchman for killing his son? Or is there something more to it?
I’d also really like to be given a few more hints about what Left Minister’s real motivations are: is he using Yooha to lure out Lee Seol and capture all the rebels? Or does he see Yooha as a potential puppet king who he has excellent blackmail material over? Or is he genuinely committed to a better Joseon (seems highly unlikely given his willingness to be the current king’s minion).
On what plot developments we do have, just what does Yooha think he is doing going ahead and taking all those conspirators pledges after discovering who the real Yee Seol is? Once you've signed a formal pact, you've stepped over the line and can’t go back, and he’s been pretty much told as much both by Left State Minister and in the note he read from bodyguard, so he deserved that sword at his neck. I hope they can resolve it but...
Finally, its pretty clear now that Shi Yeol killed Jang's son/Hong joo's fiance (the worst day of his life remember, presumably because his protectee was in such danger and he had too kill so many people). So I'm worried we are going to get a very sad ending on this (much more convincing and interesting than San/Danoh) romance, with them both sacrificing themselves to save San/Danoh.

Am I the only who can't imagine San killing anybody? XD Not even the crazy king (his uncle).
Agree that the relationship between Shi Yeol and Heung Joo is much more interesting than San and Dan Oh's.
I even think the chemistry is bigger. Maybe it's because of Kang Hoon's acting skills.

Without a doubt, Kang Hoon is doing a great job playing a multi-dimensional character.
But my heart skips for Shi-yeol and Hong-joo because they have both led very lonely lives and never got to experience life on their own. They Deserve To Be Happy!
San/Dan-oh have the childhood trauma connection (I always hate it but it's a staple of k-drama) but otherwise I don't see any real basis for the romance.

PS Chief royal guard is also looking more and more another one in the know - just rewatching the scene with the former CPs bodyguard at the tailor shop, and he looked like he nodded his head to him and almost winked before dashing off!

That was like 34823748734 kisses in just ONE episode, I thought my eyeballs were going to pop out. Okay it was like 3 but that’s more cutesy PDA than I’m used to seeing in my sageuks! Not used to seeing Kang San smiling this much either, to the point where I’m low-key worried for him every time he’s being all googly-eyed and giggly about Dan-oh. Worst time to be distracted my dude, the King has crazy eyes.
I did have a good giggle though at the contrast between when San (am I the only one who keeps thinking of San from ATEEZ every time I write the name ‘San’) and Dan-oh were all 💕 🥰 ❄️ after running away from the attackers, while there was a bloody 1 vs 10 fight to the death going on down the road hAHHA poor Shi Yeol!
I feel a bit bad for Yoo-ha this week. His predicament is a tough one and he definitely stepped into something bigger than he maybe initially conceptualised. I felt especially bad when he looked like was he was wracked with guilt and wistfulness getting love from his real grandma under false pretences. He was abandoned and now he’s being used - willingly maybe but still used - and when/if his charade gets out he’s going to have a whole host of people turn his back on him. Poor guy needs a break. Also not to mention the fact that the girl he’s been pining for for AGES is now long gone. And he’s now antagonised his half brother with his charade. I was not expecting YH and San to find out about each other but once again, pacing remains strong!
A side bar to talk about the antagonists in the show. Usually, I find the antagonists to be the weakest link in the writing of a show because they’re card-board cut outs or like are one-note but have some kind of generic ‘sympathetic’ backstory at best. BUT this show has some really interestingly written antagonists. We all thought it was going to be the scholars team in the good fight against the King at the start but the plot has developed in a much, much more interesting way now with that not being the case (or at least any time soon, we might have a final fight against the boss in ep 15 with the scholars all teaming up finally). Yes the King and his crazy eyes are borderline stereotypical sometimes but the REAL antagonist seems like it’s shaping up to be not him, not Administrator Jang but the Left State Councillor and his ‘there can’t be two suns in the sky’ philosophy. Which low-key makes sense, strategy wise, given what he’s committed to but nothing is scarier than a well intentioned bad guy sometimes. I just really vibe with the fact that we don’t just have ‘one bad guy’ though, because that runs the risk of becoming stale and cartoon-y. Other than Jang and the King there’s also the Queen, and the Eunuch (not strictly a bad guy but in the grey nevertheless) and it seems like YH might inadvertently become an antagonist at this rate too. I’d put Ban-ya and Shi-yeol in the ? box too, because given their backgrounds they’ve got reasons to become anti-Royalty or anti-San at some...

point. Feels like everyone’s playing a different game of chess thought and it’ll be very interesting to see the fallout when it all comes to a meeting point.
Finally, I know beanies brought it up last week in the comments about Ryeoun’s acting but I really felt it this week with things starting to really heat up in the plot. It’s not that he’s bad by any means, he’s doing a decent job and there are moments when he really shines, but there is something missing in his overall portrayal of the character. It makes me inadvertently wonder what the character of San would be like in the hands of someone like Lee Jae-wook or Woo Do-hwan who can deliver really nuanced portrayals of characters, not only with dialogue but with body language and expression too. I think the fact that it feels like Kang Hoon is operating in a whole other league and with JGJ pulling his weight pretty well too, it all just kind of highlights the fact that San’s portrayal, as it is right now, feels incomplete. I can but I also can’t see him as the eventual CP/King on the throne.

The show maintains its quick pace and shocking revelations. But with three weeks ahead of us, I keep worrying it might turn cliche with Yoo-ha and San wielding swords against each other which is done to death.
I love Shi-yeol and Hong-joo's slow-burn romance. Hence, I fear her learning the truth. It would be a heartbreaking and cruel turn of events for both sides.

Shi-Yeol is such an interesting character. He's the only funny one. I really liked his scenes with San. I want to learn more about his past. It was clearly not a happy one. If he accepted his duty and ready to die for his Prince (I hope it won't be the case), it looks like he doesn't want this fate for the other kids. He's a great warrior and I would like to see more of him in action like he went against several royal guards but didn't kill any of them. I wonder what he really knows about who he killed 8 years ago. Because at the tomb, he didn't really react but looked just curious about Hong-Joo's past lover.
Dan-Oh is just the main concern of San, Yoo-Ha and Yook Yook-Ho but otherwise she doesn't bring a lot to the story...
I hope San and Yoo-Ha will work together to take down the King.

The fact that Watchman killed Tae-Hwa's son is not well known. I forget who he told, but he's keeping it pretty close to the vest (until this week) because otherwise it will be clear that he cares more about catching/killing the Watchman than killing the prince.

During the incident 8 years ago, he went to his dead son before to fight against the Watchman. So I guess Shi-Yeol should have an idea or doubts.
The Minister Shin knows the truth, he confronted the Tae-Hwa about it.
Dan-Oh knows about it. I think Tae-Hwa told her. When Shi-Yeol was prisoned, she understood that Tae-Hwa was trying to lure the Watchman, she thought he was San.

Thanks for the recaps!
I have to mention the utterly beautiful cinematography when Shi Yeol and Heung Joo are talking about their wishes next to the river. The yellow/golden colors of the trees and the way it was filmed... wow. My favourite frame in the series so far.
I also liked when Shi Yeol trained/played with the little watchers. I loved the background music there.
What else? We already know that the courtesan is Yoo Ha's mother (a dangerous secret, what if he had fallen for her? Cringe!). Will she try to take him to the throne by all means?

Strangest part of the two episodes for me was when the king said that San would be around the same age and appearance as the CP if he was around. Completely random for me. Things are starting to drag a bit now, liking the romances but the politics isn't keeping me engaged.

San reminds me of people who think they are much brighter than they actually are because of familial connections, wealth and status, and, because no one has told them that they are not. How will he survive in that den of iniquity which is the palace? He has demonstrated very little strategic thinking, has no poker face and is dangerously impulsive. Even in the fictional setting of this drama, it seems very foolish to try and elevate him to a position of power as an absolute monarch.
On a different note, in ep 11, I liked the scene where Shiyeol used 우리 (our/my) regarding Danoh and the petulant San lost it. In Korean, unlike English and some other languages, the ‘our’ pronoun is often used instead of ‘my’ such as ‘our house’, our mother’, ‘our country’. This collective sense of belonging is an attractive feature of the language. Even though in this instance, Shiyeol was using it genuinely to denote ‘our Danoh”, the jealous manbaby that is San couldn’t take it.

Sometimes (many times) San acts as an impulsive jealous teenager. Being upset because Shiyeol said "uri Dan Oh" was so silly of him. This boy needs a lot of maturity.

It's not his fault. Kdrama writers use the word uri as the biggest incentive to creat jealousy, no matter how mature or logical the character is otherwise. It nearly always makes me roll my eyes.

I also think it was meant to be a very deliberate provocation - San was noticeably not coping well with the revelation of who Shi Yeol was, the extent of his close surveillance (how on earth is he going to cope in the suffocating atmosphere of the palace!) and even the idea of someone ready to die for him. Worse, he looked likely to blow his cover when he started acting normally again in the house. Shi Yeol's reversion to ultra casual language (the yo scene) and uri seemed to me to be an attempt to help him get back to acting and reacting as he normally would to Shi Yeo's teasing.

I took it as his usual teasing manner and not specifically intended to provoke - at least no more than usual. Shiyeol has been an important pressure valve as his antics are not only intended as distraction from his identity and as subterfuge but also as he has come to care about the Ihwawon family, he has used his goofy persona to try and create a level of normalcy.

"....because I didn’t worry much about who would end up on the throne in the end until you tied it to Shi-yeol’s freedom and ultimate happiness!"
Is there a Korean term for "bingo!"
At some point, either Shi-yeol or Hong-joo will discover/learn that HE (as Watchman) killed her fiancé. He did it to save the life of KangSan/Lee Seol/snowflake, of course. But Kang San is the only other person who knows this (unless Head Eunuch was watching?).
Very few people know the exact details of what happened 8 years ago. Only 3 people were there (unless Eunoch witnessed) and only TWO know WHY Jang Hyeon deserved to die after Lee Seol wanted to spare him.
My guess is that Shi-yeol is the first to connect the dots and he will back away from Hong-joo to protect her and keep her on her new path. I think he will assume that she will never be able to love him once (if) she knows the truth. Absolutely heart-wrenching but better than if she learns the truth first.
Based on comments here on Dramabeans - and the universal love for Shi-yeol and Hong-joo, I simply cannot conceive that the writers would doom these two precious souls to eternal sorrow. They - more than any other person or couple - deserve to be happy.
