Bora! Deborah: Episodes 1-2

Dramaland’s newest rom-com on the block navigates the ups and downs of romance through the eyes of our eponymous leading lady who has it all: a thriving career, influence in her field, and the perfect boyfriend. On the other side of the equation is a man who doesn’t care about the various laws and theories as pertain to relationships. And in this cute and fun story, may the best romance strategy win.

Bora! Deborah: Episodes 1-2

In this generation where difficulty in getting a job, soaring house prices, and future uncertainty are the order of the day, dating is now a luxury which most people cannot afford. You can either choose work or romance, but you can’t have both. Except if you’re our titular character YEON BORA (Yoo In-na), or as she’s professionally called, DEBORAH.

Bora is a renowned dating coach and influencer, and she’s everywhere from social media to TV and radio, dishing out foolproof strategies for romantic relationships. Because why give up on either passion or profession when you can have it all? And just in case you miss out on her media segments, you can always catch her in between the pages of any of her three (!) bestsellers. (Have y’all grabbed your copies of What You Got Wrong About Your Love Life, yet? Lol).

Naturally, as a bestselling author (with a recently expired publishing contract), Bora catches the business eye of publishing CEO HAN SANG-JIN (Joo Sang-wook). But his co-CEO and best buddy, LEE SOO-HYUK (Yoon Hyun-min) doesn’t get the whole Deborah hype because he’s not a fan of being strategic when it comes to romance, as Bora often preaches. Soo-hyuk believes that being sincere and true to oneself is what a relationship needs. And to him, people like Bora bother about other people’s love lives when theirs is a mess.

Truly, truer words have never been spoken, because Bora’s love life is far from perfect. Contrary to her confident “I can have it all” mantra as Deborah, Bora is not really sure where her relationship is headed with her boyfriend NOH JU-WAN (Chansung). They’ve been dating for three years but he still hasn’t popped the big question. And unlike her best friend LEE YOO-JUNG (Sojin, yaay!) and her husband YANG JIN-WOO (Lee Sang-woon) who got married without a proposal, Bora is determined never to walk down the aisle without getting a proper proposal first.

Bora! Deborah: Episodes 1-2

On their third anniversary, Bora’s expectations for that diamond ring are at an all-time high, and I can’t blame her. Ju-wan says he has something important to tell her, and he picks a fancy restaurant befitting his status as the new generation chaebol heir to the popular Mom’s Chicken franchise. There’s wine, and there’s the nervous small talk that leads up to the important announcement of… wait for it… a successful M&A between Mom’s Chicken and Pizza University. LMAO! Talk about taking the wind out of Bora’s sails!

It’s Ju-wan’s complete lack of self awareness for me, and I’d probably have walked away in disappointment if I were in Bora’s shoes. But like a good girlfriend, she sits there and listens to Ju-wan go on and on about the revolutionary union of chicken and pizza. The dude is so passionate and invested in his company that she doesn’t even have the heart to stop him when work calls and he has to cut their date short. I mean, what’s an anniversary dinner compared to saving the world one chicken at a time?

Throughout these episodes, Ju-wan really does everything but propose to Bora. But Little Miss Purple is no chicken, and she’s not afraid to use her radio show to send him a hint. Coincidentally, one of her listeners writes to the show about dating a guy who won’t commit to a relationship. And Bora is quick to point out that “bad guys” who avoid commitment will actually summon the courage to propose when it’s with a girl they really love. To the listener, Bora says there’s no relationship unless it has been verbally defined.

At work, Ju-wan listens in, and he catches her proposal drift. Soo-hyuk also listens in as he drives and as usual, he’s not feeling Deborah’s advice. Sang-jin recommends Bora’s latest book to him, and Soo-hyuk ends up picking all three of her books. He’s oddly convinced after scanning through the books, and he agrees with Sang-jin to set up a meeting with Deborah.

Bora! Deborah: Episodes 1-2

Before meeting Deborah, Soo-hyuk first meets Bora at a jewelry store because he’s decided to take Deborah’s advice and propose to his girlfriend. Of course, he doesn’t recognize that she’s the same person because Deborah’s pictures on social media are professionally retouched. (She looks the same to me, but okay.) As you’d expect, their first meeting is far from pleasant, and in a petty move, Soo-hyuk moves to buys Bora’s dream engagement ring. The last limited edition piece in stock! (And then, we see him try to beat down the price when Bora leaves. Hahaha.)

When Yoo-jung informs Bora that she spotted Ju-wan picking up a ring at the mall, an excited Bora floats on diamond-shaped clouds and readily forgives Soo-hyuk’s ring subterfuge, even wishing him good luck on his proposal. But as it turns out, his girlfriend is one of the writers of Bora’s radio show, and the uncommitted boyfriend story from earlier on is hers. Oops!

Soo-hyuk’s girlfriend dumps him, but up until the last minute, it’s clear that she was hoping he’d stop her. But he just lets her go without pulling out the ring. Then he has the nerve to blame Deborah for putting the proposal idea in his head. Tsk. What happened to following her full advice and going ahead with the proposal? Heck, what happened to his “be sincere and true to yourself” mantra? But then, this is probably his sincerity at play. He liked his girlfriend well enough for their breakup to hit him hard, but not well enough to propose to her.

Bora! Deborah: Episodes 1-2

As fallout from the failed proposal advice, Soo-hyuk changes his mind about working with Deborah, but it’s a little too late because she already confirmed the appointment with their company. On arrival at the meeting, she overhears him talk crap about her, and when they finally meet in person and recognize each other from the jewelry store, things only get worse. He provokes her and she bites back because in a war of nerves, she’s not one to back down.

But before the bickering duo spontaneously combust and take the whole office down with them, Yoo-jung and Sang-jin — who just so happens to be her ex brother-in-law — take Soo-hyuk and Bora out for drinks and karaoke. And when Bora asks Soo-hyuk how his proposal went, he gets all defensive, wondering why ladies cannot be the ones to make the first move when it comes to proposals.

Taking Soo-hyuk’s advice, Bora hops in a cab headed for Ju-wan’s and midway into the ride, she realizes she swapped phones with Soo-hyuk. But a bigger shocker awaits when she arrives at Ju-wan’s and catches him making out with another woman in his car! Why you little!! It’s bad enough that her chicken-brained boyfriend is cheating, but he had to do it in front of an audience!? Bora will probably not hear the end of it from Soo-hyuk (who trailed after her to retrieve his phone). The story of a dating coach with a disastrous love life? Now, that’s a book Soo-hyuk is more inclined to publish. Lol.

This is where we wrap up with Bora! Deborah’s premiere week which was everything I hoped for and more. Humor, likeable characters (including Ju-wan — whom I wanted to knock upside the head several times over the course of the episodes, but I still don’t have strong feelings of dislike towards), and a light-hearted plot (so far), featuring the delicious enemies-to-lovers trope.

Bora! Deborah: Episodes 1-2

Soo-hyuk and Bora are as different as can be, and I find their contrasting approach to romance and life in general quite fascinating. Soo-hyuk puts his common sense over passion, and we’ve seen where that got him: drunk, miserable, and heaping the blame on everyone but himself. He’s not averse to the idea of love — in fact, he wants love as evident from his post-break-up blues. But he’ll need to learn to lower his guard and verbally express what he really feels because humans are not x-ray machines and nobody hears unless you speak.

It’s tricky for Bora on the other hand, because as Deborah, she’s seemingly in control of her love life. But really, Bora just wants to wear her heart on her sleeve with none of that push and pull strategy she feeds her audience. Aside from the chicken nonsense, I found her anniversary dinner sad because you could tell she really wanted Ju-wan to stay back, but she had to act like she was cool with him leaving for work because she didn’t want to be like the clingy girlfriends she preaches against.

It’s interesting that despite being on different sides of the coin, Bora and Soo-hyuk are rolling in the same direction — which is opposite of where they want to be. Strategies aren’t always bad, and sincerity moves heaven (and the heart). So, if our bickering duo can just pause for a minute and put their heads together to learn compromise from each other, who knows? Their coin might just begin to roll in the right direction of love.

Seems like an easy fun watch. I am not too invested in the characters, yet. Some of the scenes prolonged for too long.
But I do think the show will pick up (for me) once her break up happens. The anticipation of a proposal went on for too long. I felt her frustration but I was also getting frustrated with all those imagined scenarios in her head.

The lady at the restaurant check in handing a glass of water is the best scene in the two episodes. I laughed so hard.

Will continue. Looking forward to more interactions between the leads. Plus some serious conversations about dating and love.

The cat-and-dog spat at their first business meeting was delightful and I can’t wait for more of Bo-ra’s hyperbolic radio rants and Soo-hyuk’s prickly mulishness. Sojin lights up my screen - I want Yoo-jung to be my best friend. Chansung is so good at being an idol with feet of clay, and I hope we get to see more of that talent, as well as more of Yoon Hyun-min’s singing (but without having to suffer through another overlong noraebang session). Overall, I’m cautiously optimistic.

I will take this over a drunk-female who didn't know what she was doing and wakes up in a random hotel room. So I do appreciate that she was reasonably sober (drunk but not to a point of losing her senses) at the end of it all.

My favorite parts were all in episode 2: the first war... appointment in the office, Deborah's dreams VS reality, the boy in the disco trying to flirt with Deborah's sister (I already like him as much as I dislike her) and finally the karaoke scene.

I admit I had some laughs with those moments :)

‘ the boy in the disco trying to flirt with Deborah's sister (I already like him as much as I dislike her)’👈🏾 yes so far nothing to like about Bora’s sister; ruining the dress then doing an excellent deflection to all the reasons why she had done her a favour as her new outfit looked so much better. The new dress was gorgeous it just needed to be a few inches longer (the ajumma in me really felt for her with heels too)

I have the same feelings as you about both characters, but yet, Bora's sister really gave the guy her phone number because she thought he was cute. Sure, she can later save him as "Never pick up", but she was not being a snob by just dismissing him, like her friends who said "he shouts being in the military" as if it were something nasty.

The males certainly took some hits in the first two episodes lol. Jin-ho (the guy who intervened for sis Bo-mi) was an exception.

Bo Ra, Deborah aka. all the type of men tabong hates the most in one single show. 😆 I think I haven't disliked a ML this much since Secret Garden.

So my highlights are Deborah's scenes on the radio show and the karaoke part where she sings BGGG by Miss A. That was on point.

PS. Bo Ra and her friend would've been perfect for each other. LOL They're on the same page, but their partners are... On another world.

Well, Bo Ra said dating is a job interview. And she doesn't seem to be looking for some emotional connection but more for a husband just in title? So I guess that if we see his family, job, etc, he's fine.

Her friend... She seems to want someone agressive, witty or wtv but she proposed to a guy that's scared of her and does not think before talking? No idea what happened there, we would need backstory.
But now she's just frustrated and treats the guy like trash when she should be getting a divorce.

People past 40 in relationships tend to fall into the 'sunk cost fallacy', the idea that you've invested to much into the relationship that you can't quit until you see a return on investment. This is less so for people in their early 20s

I've just finished episode 1. I've been watching Yoo Inna since 'Birdie Buddies' and 'You're The Best Lee Soon-shin' and this is the most natural and relaxed I've seen her. Perhaps its her six years as a radio host that makes her so comfortable in the role.

As an aside, IU recently did a 1 hour interview with Suga of BTS (a VERY big deal) then at the end she tacked on a promo for Bora! Because IU had lost a bet to Inna and the penalty was she had to promote Inna's new show on IU's next episode

@unit thank you for this weecap. It was an interesting start to the series. I did not like the character of Bora’s boyfriend from the first contact he seemed to have a constant smirk and acted very childish and self centred. I could not understand why Bora and her friend thought he would be a good match as he didn’t seem to offer anything.

The way Bora presents on the radio show is really funny; the uncommitted boyfriend rant was spot on. I don’t understand Soohyuk, he seemed genuinely upset that he was not the boyfriend he thought he was. From the time he told his friend that his girlfriend was sick so he told her to rest and would not make contact, I was thinking; here’s a man who has never watched a K drama where colds are treated as if the person is in the ICU needing constant monitoring. It was so disappointing that he cried and showed the ring to his friend but not to the girlfriend whose last image of him was being handed cold medication moments after she had told him how he had never made her feel she was HIS person.

I know this is typical set up for the enemies to lovers trope but in this case surely it would be better if he was reluctantly working with Bora to make amends to his ex long term girlfriend and marry her than for Bora and Soohyuk to become an item.

Best scenes so far:
the restaurant scene where Sangjin embarrassed himself with the reservation booking and the subtle/not so subtle women in solidarity response.
Bomi mistaking the overwhelmed by love at first sight soldier for an international student because of his inability to form coherent sentences.

Ahhhh, this drama was so fun and funny! Kept me smiling throughout the episodes. The little sound effects and background music were good. Bora was super entertaining and animated when she talked on the radio show. Her overimaginative scenarios cracked me up too!

Yoo Inna is completely nailing this character!! Line delivery, expressions, everything looked natural.

Soo Hyuk was speechless when Yuri broke up with him. He didn't even apologize. Wonder why he's bad at communicating.

The immediate clashing between Bora and Soo Hyuk was fun to watch. The snark from BOTH sides was good.

I'm interested in the other relationship stories and curious to see how they play out too. Bora's sister had a few lengthy scenes that didn't get mentioned. And omg, I just looked up the actor playing the guy crushing on her = June (iKON!) He had looked vaguely familiar.

Bora and her younger sister's relationship was so realistic! It was funny how they were yelling at each other one moment, then helping/getting advice the next. Not sure of Bomi's benevolence or she actually wanted to distract her big sis lol. Leaning towards her being helpful though.

One minor thing that distracted me was Yoon Hyun Min's wavy bangs. The few strands in the middle! I just want to brush it.

It was helpful and that’s why it worked so well as a deflection tool and being the younger one this is a strategy she will have honed over the years to get away with so much under the ‘sweet and innocent’ guise, can you tell I am an older sister🤣 not bitter at all 😬

I liked the first two episodes so I'll be sure to continue watching next week. I won't count the hours until then, but when the episodes are online I will watch them with the hope of more fluffy humour.

During the break-up scene where Soo-Hyuk's girlfriend lists all his faults, I briefly worried that the drama might take too serious a tone (thanks to STRANGERS AGAIN, I'm a burnt child), but it was only a brief moment.

Except for the annoying little sister, who I hope will soon really fall on her face, the characters have already grown on me. I had some reservations about Bora during the opening scene, but she doesn't seem to be quite as superficial as one might have assumed during the photo shoot.

The price beating got me too. The moment his bag dropped from his shoulder, I knew it was time to haggle the price like my mama.

If that was a statement complementing Joo Sang-wook's youth(during his convo with Soo-hyuk), I'll listen to it over and over. Look good in Saguek✅✅. Look good in modern costume ✅✅. No wardrobe mistakes at all. The actor aside, Sang-jin knew he was in when he dodged the leg kick. So much experience under his belt. But that water splash was simply epic. Guy, I wished it was alcohol instead of water. Some ethanol doing some wonders down his nostrils. That aside, I like Sang-jin already. And I like his characterization here by JSW.

I've said all I wanted about Soo-hyuk wrt the breakup with his gf on my fanwall. Just to add, I share your sentiment Unit when you said she was sincerely hoping he'd stop her. But this guy blew every single one of it, intentionally, even though it does seem like it but it does seem like it.

Are they pairing Soo-hyuk with Deborah? I feel for Yu-ri so much already that I don't want to think about the fallout of learning that the person who's input helped her make a drastic decision in her life dates the guy she broke up with. If they do date, Bora and Soo-hyuk, the premise looks hypocritical and very much on the wrong foot for me to be cool with it.

Lots of laughs. I got it here quite well. And more to come.

My deranged stream of consciousness comments:

Ep. 1: I just decided to watch the first episode of this to pass the time… I didn’t expect this to be actually good? wtf? Like the production quality is great, the humour lands mostly…

while it feels like Yoo In-na is playing the adorable romcom heroine she usually does, I was mostly impressed with the ML’s storyline. Not because I like the character - he’s an entitled jerk - but that final scene was amazing; great acting, so brutal, so real and so well deserved. Hoping he gets engaging character development over the next few episodes. Although if the previews are anything to go by, he hasn’t internalized what his ex said and just blames Bo-ra instead.

Ep. 2: I could watch another 50 minutes of Bo-ra and Su-hyeok just verbally sparring and her putting him in his place. Guy really didn’t internalize anything, just blames it all on Bo-ra. Why does he think his ex sent the message in the first place? she must have been unhappy for a while… bro is just onto nothing. Character development can’t come soon enough, tho I think next week we’ll see his more decent side.
I love all of Bo-ra’s daydreams and how elaborate they get. They did it a lot, but I was dying every time she imagined he was gonna propose, with the expectations vs reality bit and the music stopping & starting… comedy gold.

I last watched Yoo In-na in Queen In-hyun’s Man and a bit of Goblin & Love from the Star. She is just as beautiful and adorable as she was back then. I can’t imagine how anyone can cheat on her but somehow men find the audacity.

her sister is another person I can’t stand. She is so entitled and spoiled, I would be happy to have less of her scenes. And army dude, “saving“ a woman doesn’t mean you are entitled to her and can follow her around…

anyways, overall, I liked the second episode a bit less but I’m still hyped for this drama. next week can’t come soon enough.

Thanks for the weecap @unit. I am not surprised I loved the first 2 eps seeing as YIN is in this drama. The first 2 eps show a constructing juxtaposition of the ML and FL's idea of dating. Bora is right in that dating is sometimes like a job interview, you do have to state your intentions or what you offer and follow through. However, humans aren't companies.

Sincerity is important as well. The ML however got the sincerity part however he's missing the fact that all relationships have intention and expectations that you have to meet. Just thinking in your kind that you live someone would never be enough. Even the words he said to his girlfriend was so shocking. Imagine not defining your relationship and still asking your supposed gf if she's getting married. Is that supposed to be a joke? Poor Yu Ri. Unfortunately she's the cannon fodder due to be sacrificed to the ML's character growth.

Required fields are marked *

He starts with a ponderous joke about her looking pretty and is she going on a date? But her response goes in an unexpected direction immediately and he fails to read that. I think he thinks he’s being clever by next asking if she’s getting married, since he “knows” they’re about to get engaged, and then he isn’t able to recover when it not only falls flat but turns into an emotional bomb. It’s a heartbreaking scene - the way she goes from resolution to bravado to self-blame, recriminations, and tears. The joke sequence is weird, but it fits his self-absorbed personality and also I keep reminding myself there may some missing nuance in the translation; the subs are really minimal and poor on Prime.

Yes I think I see it now. It struck me as callus but now that you mention it, the joke was probably Ill timed. I think the ML was self centered but didn't realise it. Simply put, he never considered what the girl he supposedly loves could be feeling. Even the ring was bought under duress.

I think the platform with the best subs would always be Viki. Netflix and Prime are usually always super edited from Chinese and Korean and they never have any explanations for jokes or idioms.

I have a soft spot for cold, jerk MLs who warm up and soften over time, and IMO Yoon Hyun-min is an expert at executing that. If he made me fall in love with Ko Nan-do from My Holo Love, it'll be easy for him to make me love this ML! Even after that radio story, which honestly was horrible and made me lose a lot of sympathy I might have felt otherwise (but I still felt some because, again, Yoon Hyun-min).

I really loved the juxtaposition of the ML and FL's dating styles too, @misstia. Both are definitely wrong, but mostly because they are so extreme. Looking forward to them meeting somewhere in the middle!

I get why some folks are saying that the ML is a jerk, but that wasn't the impression I got at all. To me, he came off as a pretty confident person (he also has strong opinions in other areas of his life, like his work, and has been successful because of them) and sometimes confident people can't realize when others around them need more assurance or encouragement. It also struck me as a very realistic situation (even if it's a bit of an extreme example) - the first boyfriend I ever had never defined our relationship, and I was too young and timid to ask him to. Luckily, he went off to study abroad, I grew up a bit, and we had a very mutual breaking-off. It was only later that I realized how much I resented him for that lack of definition in our relationship, but I'm sure he had no idea I felt that way.

I'm really excited for more of this tomorrow! So far it's been exactly what I was hoping it would be - a mostly light romcom that still has something interesting and true to say about relationships. And if Bora and Soo-hyuk keep bickering, I'm not going to complain about it! I hope he's not a complete jerk about her cheating boyfriend though. Maybe this can be their first opportunity to see each other as people and sympathize a little? Before going back to being opponents, obviously!

It seems we have the same opinion about the ML, but I have read people (not here) who really hate him 😅
