You can only pick one: Noona romance

You can only pick one noona romance
missvictrix: Oh boy, I’m torn. I have a few oldie-oldie contenders for this (Dalja’s Spring, Woman Who Still Wants to Marry), but I’ll have to pick Witch’s Romance. While Witch’s Romance didn’t dig as deep into the depths of the significance and emotions of a woman’s romance with a younger man, it certainly was a memorable one that quickly became a classic. This is largely thanks to Uhm Jung-hwa and Park Seo-joon’s amazing chemistry — and Park Seo-joon’s performance as a totally squishy, sincere, and delightful hero. Though the drama did some silly things that were totally unnecessary (seriously, the complexities of their huge age gap romance were more than enough for the entire plot without the dreaded Return of the Exes cliche), the relationship and hijinks and fluttery moments did everything that a good noona romance requires.
quirkycase: I’m going to go perhaps a bit unconventional here and choose Secret Love Affair. This drama checks a lot of boxes for me: fantastic performances, understated and cinematic style (tt’s an Ahn Pan-seok drama), and nuanced character exploration. That said, this isn’t your typical swoony noona romance; as the title implies, it does involve cheating, and it’s a very slow burn drama. However, it’s a great character study of a woman (Kim Hee-ae) trapped in a stifling life of her own making who meets a young man (Yoo Ah-in) who represents a riskier, more passionate option. Classical music is incorporated beautifully into the story itself – Yoo Ah-in’s character is a piano prodigy, while Kim Hee-ae’s character is a former pianist who works at the conservatory he attends – and serves as the primary means of emotional expression for the characters (and drama overall). It’s a drama that’s probably not suited to everyone’s taste, but it hit all the right notes for me.
mistyisles: I Hear Your Voice, hands down! In fact, it’s the only noona romance that comes to mind, no matter how hard I rack my brain. But just because it wins by default doesn’t mean it wouldn’t win if it had competition — I loved everything about this show, from the fantasy and thriller elements to the side characters to (of course!) the romance. Lee Jong-seok and Lee Bo-young had chemistry in spades, and even though the age gap leans on the uncomfortable side for me, they 100% sold it.
DaebakGrits: I’m not sure if my decision to pick Romance is a Bonus Book stems from my appreciation of the noona romance or of the fact that books and publishing are at the forefront of this drama’s story. For the sake of this prompt, we’re going to assume it’s 100% the relationship between Eun-ho and Dan-yi, but I freely admit I wasn’t initially on board with this pairing. Even though the age gap between these characters is only five years, their maturity levels felt much further apart because of their life experiences. Dan-yi is a recently divorced mother struggling to reenter the workforce, and Eun-ho has that whole young bachelor vibe going on. Over the course of the drama, this pairing grew on me, though, and I think that is largely why I picked this drama: if the story is compelling enough for me to work past my preconceived notions about the characters, then it deserves my praise.
Unit: While the noona aspect isn’t the exact focus of the romance in When The Camellia Blooms, the Dong-baek and Hwang Yong-shik — who happens to be my second favorite K-drama male lead of all time — pairing still remain at the top of my noona romance list. I loved the earnestness of Yong-shik’s feelings, and how unrelenting he was in his pursuit of Dong-baek. As a single mom who had gotten her heart broken in the past, Dong-baek had to be on her guard to protect both her son and her heart. But a determined Yong-shik broke down those walls not just by mere words, but by actions: on countless occasions, he stood up for Dong-baek to his mother and the other town folks. Her son was important to her, therefore, the son became important to Yong-shik as well. He literally ran into a fire to save Dong-baek, and caught a serial killer who was after her. And with these uncommon romantic gestures, it’s not so hard to see why Dong-baek fell for him in return. Plus, in what (I think) is the best use of time skip ever, we actually saw these two still together in old age, so, cheers to a long-lasting noona romance!
Dramaddictally: You don’t even want to know how much I tortured myself with this one. How — how — can I only pick one? But since these are the rules, and I gotta do it, I’m going with Witch’s Romance. With a fourteen-year age gap between Park Seo-joon and our noona, Uhm Jung-hwa, this drama takes its genre seriously. And it’s got all the moves, from laugh-out-loud funny to sugary sweet to super sexy (sometimes all at once! The drunken bedroom scene where Miss Noona first realizes her date is only 25 is an equal blend of hilarious and hot). But really, this is my pick because I love both leads here. Our 39-year-old heroine is a pragmatist, a bit jaded by life (though I wouldn’t call her a witch), and totally caught off guard by the attention of a young and handsome man. It’s up to our hero to prove his feelings for her are sincere through maturity, dedication, and all the fun they have together. I just love it. It’s everything I want in a noona romance, and it’s a crazy good time. (Also: an adorably skinny Park Seo-joon. I mean, come on!)

While there are several great Noona romances, and Witch's Romance is high on my list, I will always go with Secret Love Affair, for all the reasons mentioned by @quirkycase, and because it was the very first drama I ever watched. I remember being blown away: that musical score and the sense of foreboding in practically every scene, yet I could not look away. What's strange is that I normally don't like shows that leave me with a knot in my stomach, or that attempt to justify adultery, but this was an exception. And Yoo Ah In's performance as Lee Sun Jae was mesmerizing.

It's an extraordinary drama. I'm not sure if it's the subject matter or the fact that it's not as accessible as other shows but it never makes Best Drama lists and it probably should. It's a work of art.

I feel the same - this drama ticks all the boxes I normally avoid with a barge pole, so I’m still not sure why I even started it one day. But it’s simply transcendent. That’s the only way I can understand or make sense of why I kept watching and was in awe of it.

I agree with you and @quirkycase in choosing Secret Love Affair. SLA has it all: the music, the incredible acting, the writing, the artful filming. I have watched this drama several times, and I enjoy it just as much every time, plus I notice something new each time. It amazes me that this show hasn't received more recognition! I also wish it had been recapped here in DB because I think the discussion would be fascinating. SLA is indeed a work of art, and @dramadillo you are right, it is transcendent.
Also, I discovered Yoo Ah In with SLA. He is a fantastic actor! I wish I could watch more of his work, so many are not available to view in the US.

I'm with DaebakGrits here, Romance is a Bonus Book. Not only for the OTP, but the whole ensemble. Wi Ha-Joon was particularly adorable. And let us not forget the most important thing: Lee Actual Jong-Suk described IU as his Dan-Yi!

RiaBB has one of my favourite scenes describing the friends-to-lovers experience. When Dan I asks Eun Ho when he started to like her romantically, he responds:
“I don’t know when I started to like you.
“From spring to summer, from summer to fall, from fall to winter. Do you know when the season changes? Do you know exactly when winter ends and spring begins?”
As opposed to the more impassioned confessions where people pledge to love the other person forever, or promise to make them happy for the rest of their lives, or reference some belief in first or fated love, I am moved by the simplicity of this. It’s like saying, “the more I’ve spent time with you and gotten to know you, the more I love you and want to keep spending time with and loving you.”

If AOS wasn't mentioned because of the real life age and just per character ages Naksu was older as hinted as her father died when Jang Uk was born and she was already small,we see them in the flashback but indeed their age was never mentioned nor important to the plot...

I loved 'Secret Love Affair' to bits, that I watched it back to back and till to date I listen to the sound track.
But somehow I never considered to call it a Noona romance!!
It's probably one of the best written, directed, acted drama I have ever watched. And where I fell in love with YAI!
If I were to pick a 'lighter' drama for noona romance, I would go with Dalja's Spring (yes, inspite of the FL's hair!!)

The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry is also good if a little dated.
But I don't even think Secret Love Affair is a "noona romance" despite technically having an age gap romance. Rather it's a piece of art.

I liked the noona romance in Hello, Me! Kim Young-kwang was very bubbly with Choi Kang-hee.
The noona romance I liked the most in all my kdrama history will be Lee Jae-won (Lee Kyu-han) and Chae Ji-seung (Wang Bit-na). It was perfect, just for me. For me, its the best part out of everything I watched in She Would Never Know.

Hum, there are a lot of good ones :
My Lovely Sam Soon, Dal Ja's Spring, I Hear Your Voice, Let's Eat, Witch's Romance, What's Up, Fox? So many noona romances!
But I will choose the one everybody hates, Something in the Rain. It's the only one I rewatched (by FF her family's scenes). I loved the direction and the music. There were so many lovely, cute, funny and sexy couple scenes! The PD did really well to portray intimacy in a couple like the scene at the hospital.

I'm Team Firebomb My Television after the last few episodes of Pretty Noona but if you wanted to highlight the ridiculous ingrained sexism of Korean society than having a 'noona romance' with a difference of only two years is the best way to do it.
People are so sensitive to women's age that they'll call it a 'noona romance' if the actors have different ages even if they're supposed to be the same age in the text.

Right next to you with the Molotov cocktails. I even keep seeing One Spring Night called a 'noona romance' when the characters state out loud more than once that they are THE SAME AGE.
Now that I look at my list, I've seen surprisingly few true noona romances, though I neither avoid them nor seek them out. If I had to pick one, I guess it's Dal-ja's Spring by default because it's the only one where I actually (mostly) liked both the drama and the OTP.

The sexism was such a big part in this drama and the most frustrating, it's they didn't choose the pinky solution, they just showed the hard reality in the Korean society. The FL tried to fit in the society's expectations, her family and her job, but at the end she could only leave this toxic environment.

Unlike others that's actually the reason I think it's a really good drama but also why I don't like it and why it made me want to hit something.
I just found it depressing. Its message was that there is no way for women to win and if you want happiness you have to drop out. Which I just found too realistic. I want some unrealistic fantasy hope in my dramas please!

Are we talking about "something in the rain" if so this is exactly why I couldn't understand why people hated the drama so much... To me it was like looking at my life, the people around me and accepting that as the truth, I understand that people refuse to accept that but why so much hate... Not every one can get that happy ending, some of us end up doing what our parents want, end up getting married because we are told to, end up being house wives, we get paid less, we get harassed, we are blamed for being barren, we are told to pray if we have an alcoholic, gambling or abusive husband "put it in God's hands they say"... I could easily take her situation and fit it into mine and to me it's even a more perfect drama... Plus as I am use to jdramas telling me stories instead of focusing on happy endings or solving problems I was fine with this show...

I wasn't a huge fan of What's Up Fox for a number of reasons but I thought it and The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry did a great job at portraying the way in which Korean society is set up to normalise older man/ younger woman relationships and how it cannot structurally handle the overturning of this status quo.
The female lead marrying a younger man and her sister marrying a much older man played havoc with the kinship terms and hierarchical social systems, which it had a lot of fun with.
And of course WWSWTM had the son and mother falling in love with two people the same age and all the havoc that caused with the future daughter-in-law and future father-in-law being chingus.

I realize the conventional definition of a noona romance is physical age (the pairing of an older female and younger male) but with the caveat in some viewer's minds of the actors' real ages vs. the characters' stated ages.
But what about the characters mental or emotional age? SOMETHING IN THE RAIN is classified as a noona romance but the OTP's immaturity and emotional age had them both at infatuated teenagers.
Or a difference in life experience. IN WOK OF LOVE, the young chef has a more mature outlook based on his life experiences than the spoiled rich family princess who had her silver spoon lifestyle. Does that cancel out their age difference when they both hit rock bottom?

But also what I love about her character is that she's completely sincere but also never tells the truth so when she told him she didn't date younger men she was flat out lying. And he knew she was lying too and followed it up with that emphatic NOONA.
That show let me down so much and yet I still love it so much *sigh*
Apropos of nothing, Greasy Melo is one of those things where the English title provided to Netflix is absolutely terrible. Wok of Love is so sanitised compared to the messy mixed up melodrama it really is.

The best part about noona romances for me is when it is NOT the main point of the story. Even better if FL being older is only mentioned briefly and it has little to no impact on OTP's relationship. Prime examples: Hyena, Happiness. There's more, but it was so subtle that I actually forgot some titles, I'm afraid lol.

That's pretty much what I meant - I just dislike noona romances and avoid them with passion. Imo there are thousands of far more interesting issues to explore in relationship. The fact that most noona dramas showcase the age gap by making FL as infuriatingly childish as possible (instead of, you know, making ML mature for his age or just not going for a cartoonish mental age difference between the two at all) also doesn't add any sympathy points to the trope in my book.

Also, I hate that in many noona romances the male lead is shown as overbearingly pushy, not taking no for an answer, acting out pettily in front of older suitors, and dropping speach and ordering the female lead around as a sign of comfort.
I understand that it is meant to show that the woman is irresistibly attractive, but it just puts me off. As an older woman, I would hate that impertinent young boy, not fall for him.
Try more mature and gentlemanly younger suitors, writer-nims, please.

I think it has more to do with the hidden casual sexism of the trope - they can't really show a woman pursuing younger man AND taking an initiative in doing so, that'll be too much for still deeply conservative SK. Neither those dramas want to show their FL being TOO ready and open to something as scandalous as dating a man of "wrong" age even if she wasn't the initiator. So FL MUST be in the position of receiving ML attention. And said attention MUST be strong enough to make her "overcome" the initial coyness befitting a proper Joseon... erm, Korean lady. Which leads to: a) ML always doing the pursuing, b) ML being rather pushy at it. Isn't it nice? *evil grin*

But the principle of a noona romance, it's the fact the couple has to handle the difference of age with their friends, family, society, etc.
In Happiness, the characters were the same age, it's just the actress who was older. But the age of the actors doesn't count.

Until they start labelling every single damn drama with an older man based on the age of the man both in show and in real life - Oppa Romance, Ajusshi Romance, Samchan Romance. No they're just romances. But hire a woman one year older and suddenly it's a whole genre with a frigging warning label.

Yeah, they both were SUPER casual with each other - always talking in banmal, mostly using not just first names, but affectionately shortened versions, barely ever making an issue about skinship and so on. I was sincerely shocked by the absolute zero of formality displayed, it felt so... non-korean.

I went in fully prepared to squirm at that storyline and thought it was completely charming instead. Both of the actors carried it off so well. The only faint false note was when I realized LJW's character was supposed to be draft age (late 20s) and he was so visibly still a puppy.

I should not be commenting on this topic, because of all romance formats, the noona romance is by far my least favorite. I say this even after having read and considered yet another of @missvictrix excellent essays, https://www.dramabeans.com/2019/01/behind-the-noona-romance/ She makes the strong argument that the woman’s dithering and self-doubt that are always part of these romances are a rare moment in kdramas where romance is depicted as a conscious choice rather than a struck by lightning moment, and the anxiety the noona feels allows an exploration of woman’s deeper feelings, doubts and insecurities that is rare even in female-centered kdramas.
These are thoughtful points, but the older I get, the more I observe (and strongly believe) that the usual woman-older-by-10 years that is represented as an enormous barrier to romance in kdramas is totally insignificant. In fact, only if the younger guy and older woman think biological children are the only way to go is the age gap important in any way. Women live longer than men. The best recipe for the longest lived relationship is to have the woman older!
Real life aside, what especially irritates me is when the heroine’s doubts include what is best for the man—at worst, whether she can “keep the younger man happy.” Its not that I don’t appreciate that insecurity could be a factor in noona thinking. its just that there is also an element of noble idiocy and womanly sacrifice, often bordering on sexism, that is my least favorite part of all kdrama romances when it appears. If the male character is totally smitten, as they always are, why sacrifice your romantic interests for his, especially if the guys are also good looking, charming and sincere? Now, the noonas are also usually extremely attractive and accomplished, so I guess you could say they have their pick of men, why choose one that has the irremediable flaw of youth? I think Witch's Romance has a little bit of that thinking, in addition to self-doubt. But, all things considered, total devotion goes a long way in sustaining a romantic relationship, in my book.
And speaking of books, I guess if I had to choose one, it would be Romance is a Bonus Book, because both characters at least shared a devotion to books and literature. Otherwise, the romance was totally flat and what would in real life actually be an important issue of the relationship, requiring significant discussion, the female lead’s daughter, was scarcely ever mentioned! I could express similar type reservations about every show mentioned here: the romance is usually way too dominated by unjustified female insecurity. Even Hello Me, which is a charming show with a great message about overcoming insecurities, shows affection and support between the FL and ML, but the ending scene mostly portrays her ambivalence.
Anyway that’s enough from me, as a big fan of noonas, and an anti-fan of noona romances!

By the specific definition that age difference has to be the central topic and point of the story I can't think of any drama that I have absolutely loved...
In Bottom of the 9th With 2 Outs I loved Su Ae's infatuation with the cute shy basketball player, played by a squishy baby Lee Tae Sung before he discovered villain roles. But as I was firmly team Lee Jung Jin I wasn't sad they were forced to break up.
I loved Romance is a Bonus Book too, although for other reasons.

Love that this post even exists, every drama chosen by the staff is so good! (I'm assuming that Camellia is good based on how much people love it. lol)
Also love that this exists because it's a place to appreciate this trope, and it's very common to see casual prejudice against women on display any time "noona romance" is mentioned. I don't know how many times I've seen "I don't like noona romances" when I've almost never seen compaints about the much more common older-man, younger-woman pairings. And really all you're saying when you say you don't like "noona romances" is you think there's something inherently negative about older women seeking younger partners that does not old for older men doing the same.
There's not even a name for older-man, younger-woman--that's how common it is! Imagine calling a drama an "oppa romance." Try saying, "What's Wrong With Secretary Kim? is an oppa romance," and watch people look at you like you have two heads.

I said all this and forgot to mention Happiness. If I'm remembering correctly, Han Hyo-joo's character repeated a year in high school and ended up gradutating with Park Hyung-shik's character...which means she's technically older though they call each other by name. If this pairing counts as a noona romance, then it's by-far my favorite. Outside of subcategorizations, this pair is one of my favorite--easily top 5--kdrama romances of all time.

Then it's probably worth being precise. "I don't like noona romances" is likely not the best way to communicate "I don't think there's anything wrong with older-woman, younger-man romances."
Among genre romance fans--mostly among the book readers--we are often critiquing common plot points or characterizations or tropes in the subgenres we love, but we don't often critique them by saying "I don't like [insert subgenre here]." Because it doesn't clearly what we actually mean. And, understandably or not, leads others to believe we agree with those who are more explanatory about their dislike--in this case, "I simply do not like older women going after younger men."
An ideal world maybe wouldn 't require you to expound on that statement. But we live in a sexist, misogynist, patriarchal world that would demonize women for many things men can routinely engage in. Worth being careful that even our most casual opinions are not aligned with that kind of thinking. Of course, you could be a person who always expounds. And, in that case, bravo.

I completely agree with this point, but an easy anti-noona romance counterpoint that fits my discomfort with them is instead to ask: "why do we have a category called noona romances, in which the central PROBLEM is a younger man liking an older woman? It shouldn't BE a problem, so why do these romances all treat it as it is a big issue?"
Now, of course, the answer to this is obvious: unfortunately due to sexism in real life it is an issue in society, and in Korean society especially, so that's why noona romances exist as a designated category, and oppa romances do not. (Also, with oppa romances, unless you were very careful, you'd risk celebrating sexual exploitation of younger or subordinate women, which What's Wrong With Secretary Kim veers a bit too close to for my liking. But that's a different topic!)
So, as I say above, my issue with noona romances is that too often the show has the noona agonizing over the romance in self-abasing, rather than self-affirming way.

I mean you're asking for an age-gap romance with a younger man in an age-obsessed, hyper-patriarchal hierarchical culture where the female lead has no issue with age or sex hierarchies. It could probably be done today but it's unlikely to exist much in the past.
Unless of course it's not actually a noona romance but just a romance where the female lead or the actor is slightly older. They exist.
Imagine you've been told your entire life that no man would ever like an older woman and after a certain age nobody will like you at all. It's going to be pretty hard not to internalise that.
It was also an important theme in the comedy Please Don't Date Him where the male lead was told repeatedly that his girlfriend was too old and he should dump her for someone younger. Women in South Korea are surrounded by that message every minute of their lives.

Yes, I know. The show I'm thinking of would have to be one of those sci-fi fantasy time travel romances. I have an idea. How about one where an older woman fighter returns to the past from a post apocalyptic Korea and unapologetically attracts the love and devotion of a young genius entrepreneur physicist who is about to create a time machine? Then she'd be a noona in every sense. Plus the show would be a tremendous creative success!

Oh oops Indyfan, you're right
The one that springs to mind is Pretty Noona but that drama is specifically about the societal response to a relationship that on paper shouldn't be a problem. The male and female leads were from memory 33 and 35 so the age gap was marginal and didn't justify the pushback from everyone around them.
But nobody is going to recommend Pretty Noona for a number of reasons.
The only ones probably are ones where I wouldn't call them a Noona romance. Like Greasy Melo (Wok of Love) where the female lead is technically older but apart from a few jokes peppered here and there it's not the point of the drama.
Which goes back to the original question of what a noona romance is: if the age gap isn't an issue, it's not a noona romance. It's just a romance.

@leetennant & @hacja now I want a time traveling noona drama. I would watch the hell out of a female Goryeo general/doctor/whatever coming to the 21st century and meeting a second rate idol actor.
Which begs the question about time travel anything: Why is it that women go back in time, but men get to go forward in time? Is there any tv show or movie where a woman jumps forward? (except Dr Who)

@egads because women have to be put in their place, obviously
Seriously though, I’ve been waiting ages for a drama where the WOMAN gets to travel to modern day. It would just be a much more interesting and rewarding story to see a woman’s reaction to the opportunities she would have in the modern world, while also recognizing that some things sadly seem to not have changed much.

I agree that it’s maddening and frustrating that the noona romance genre even exists…however—it’s at least encouraging that many of them present the situation in a positive light, with the couples overcoming personal and societal prejudices to build strong relationships. Whether this will eventually “normalize” older woman/younger man scenarios remains to be seen.
BTW—I don’t see that South Korea is all that much worse than the US in regards to this type of situation. I can’t think of many things more cringe-inducing than the concept of the “cougar” romance!

I generally dislike noona romances to be honest. Not because of the age gap, but because too often the female lead's maturity doesn't seem to reflect her life experience, while the male lead acts like a teenager despite being in his twenties just to give the characters contrast. So I prefer noona romances where the age gap isn't a major focus. Anyway...
When the Camellia Blooms: One of my absolute favorite dramas - the rare romcom/serial killer genre mix that actually works. Her being a single mother and social outcast was the bigger hurdle, and I found it a more realistic take on why age-gap relationships can be challenging.
2nd would be WWW Search - but for the secondary couple (the primary pairing was boring and I thought they should've broken up). Featuring an adorably young Lee Jae Wook and Lee Da Hee as a gorgeous badass.

Are currently airing romances in competition? Because if so CRASH COURSE IN ROMANCE would be my choice. In real life ages (of the leads) certainly CCIR would qualify with Jeon Do-yeon (50, just turned) and Jung Kyung-ho (39). In the drama JKH’s character is younger, not sure how much. JDY’s character in the police station refers to JKH’s character if memory serves as ‘that young man’. All that being said for me in CCIR it is not noticeable perhaps because her character is in better shape than his lol.

Most Noona romances don’t feel like Noona romances to me? Especially if they are only five years older or so because if I we switch it the other way where the ML is five or so years older than the FL it would not be considered an Oppa romance but rather a ‘regular’ romance.
I guess my pick would be When the Camellia Blooms. I’m not sure if they mentioned the age gap tho? And I can never tell Kang Ha-neul’s age, he looks both young and old at the same time. Maybe he’s just that good at acting? I feel similarly about Ryoo Joon-yeol, dude is like 36 but can still manage to pull off a college age student in the film Taxi Driver.
Same with Yoo Yeon-seok as well, he is nearing his 40s but somehow manages to pull off chemistry with Moon Ga-young who is still in her 20s and is 12 years younger than him. They are both incredible actors that visually I can actually believe they might be similar in age. Which is so odd to me because actor Jung Ga-ram who is also in the drama and older than Moon Ga-young by 3 years still looks as if he is a teenager?
I seriously can’t tell age.
My Love From Another Star isn’t a Noona romance because the ML is hundreds of years older than the FL and Lee Min-ho looks older than Jeon Ji-hyun so even if her character was older I couldn’t tell in The Legend of The Blue Sea. Also her fish out of water character (pun intended) made her seem younger too.
I think the Visual & Acting component are where I can or cannot determine the age gap in a drama. In Crash Course In Romance, I can’t even tell the real age gap, they look the same age to me and both the leads are incredible actors.
Whereas I could definitely tell Forecasting Love & Weather was a Noona romance. Because ML acted more immature than the FL and visually I could see the age difference for once.
In Life, Lee Dong-wook & Won Jin-A looked the same age to me even tho there is a ten year gap between them. It helps that Lee Dong-wook looks very youthful but he is only 1 year younger than Cho Seung-woo, which completely dumbfounded me when I found that out!
Then we have our queen Kim Tae-ri who does not look like a teenager at all but can easily pass as someone in her 20s. And yet with her acting prowess she completely embodied Hee-do’s youthful mannerisms and I wholeheartedly believed she was a naive hopeful young adolescent!

Thank you!! I feel this way about Kang Hanuel. He can play much older or young...in fact, I find it hard to believe how mushy and boyish he’s said to be IRL. He has such a depth and maturity to his acting that I can easily believe him as someone older.

This is one of those kdrama things that's always been weird to me, that this is a genre with a label, considering that a several hundred year old goblin can get interested in a girl still in her high school uniform and no one bats an eye (so I guess I Hear Your Voice is fair play). That said, I respect the ones that treat the age difference issue respectably, like What's Up Fox, Dalja's Spring, and the Kim Sun-a collection (Kim Sam-Soon, I Do I Do, and if I remember correctly, Scent of a Woman?). Although ideally, it wouldn't be an issue at all.

A Witch’s Romance is just awesome. The chemistry between the leads and their acting is brilliant. I thought I loved Park Seo Joon’s character in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim but he really shines in AWR. Another reason why l enjoyed this drama is its more realistic portrayal of adult romantic relationships. While I don’t want to be beaten over the head with gratuitous sex scenes, this jumping every time a male comes near the FL routine that some more modern dramas portray is beyond cringe.

It's funny because Witch's Romance felt it needed its female lead to be drunk to justify the scene in the first episode. To this day I have never (from memory) watched a Korean drama where a sober adult woman decided to have sex with a man just because she wanted to have sex with him.
In the Taiwanese original she made that decision sober.
There are a lot of people who are angry with the remake over it.

This is just one of the reasons I liked the original T-drama more.

Yeah from memory that was at the end when they were in love and she wanted a serious committed relationship from him. It was an act of love, not sex.

One example just finished airing: Love to Hate You. Mi-Ran’s enjoyment of sex for its own sake caused a big brouhaha when it was revealed to the public.

It's funny because I typed that comment and then only an hour or two later I finally got around to pressing play in Love to Hate You. And the first scene where she's hanging out in bed with some random guy made me laugh at the irony.
There's one!

Secondary couple in The Tale of Nine Tailed/Tale of Gumiho did just that - the two have a casual conversation, then girl suddenly tells straight to guy's face she wants to bang and jumps him right after finishing the sentence. And she's not really in love at this point. None of them are humans, though, but you said "a sober adult woman", so this still counts, right?

You know I think the answer to this question might be Veronica Park but, then, I should probably have specified the lead. Second leads get to get up to all kinds of nasty. They get to be gay, they get to be promiscuous, they get to be serial monogamists, they get to have a lot of fun.

I just remembered a scene in A Hundred Million Stars From the Sky, where the FL (Jung So-Min) tells the ML (Seo In-Guk) that she wants to sleep with him. She is definitely sober at the time.
The ensuing scene, in a motel bedroom, is…um…well… 🔥🔥🔥🫠

Thank you for the Witch’s Romance recommendation! I can’t believe I didn’t know about a Park seo-joon early classic. The first drama I saw him in was She was Pretty, and that was not the best intro to a favorite actor. Now I’ll just decide in my mind this is the first introduction I had to him!
I watched the first episode and it was one of the best first episodes I’ve ever seen! It was so funny and sexy and poignant.

You should also watch the Taiwanese original at some point. There's a definite Original vs Remake war in the Witch's Romance space.
You can see which side you come down on (although I suspect people will like the one they saw first generally).
The Taiwanese version is called Queen of No Marriage (alt. My Queen).
Of course it doesn't star Park Seo-joon though...

Have you seen PSJ in Kill Me, Heal Me? It’s probably quite dated, but I loved his character in that, and Ji Sung is excellent in it. There’s also a gorgeous golden retriever in it!😁

I chose Secret Love Affair as my pick for this category, I replied to comments above.
I wanted to add a note on my very close second place noona drama, Romance is a Bonus Book. This one was right up my alley, romance + books!! There was so much I loved about this drama. There was no noble idiocy, no time skip/separations, no trucks of doom. The childhood backstory made sense because they stayed close so it wasn't one of those they met once and coincidentally met again tropes.
I loved the setting in a publishing company! I love to read and appreciated how the characters valued books and worked so passionately to get the stories they enjoyed published well. The storybook themes were wonderful too, like the scene at the movies. And the scene where Dan-i tries to explain her changing feelings for Eun-Ho by comparing this to re-reading a familiar book but finding the meaning has changed.
There were so many beautiful lines and book quotes too. @dramadillo mentioned one, the seasons comparison to falling in love, and there were many others, like Eun-Ho using a line from a poem about the moon being beautiful that actually meant I love you.
And finally, it felt to me like Dan-i was more hesitant to begin a change in relationship with Eun-Ho because of always having considered him a close friend than because he was younger. She was worried about losing this very important, special friendship should their romantic relationship not work out for them. A very good reason! Romance is a Bonus Book is in my top 5 favorite Kdramas list along with SLA, and is another that I've watched more than once.

Another vote here for Secret Love Affair. It’s such a thoughtful, layered, and adult look at complicated relationships. I love that it doesn’t try to wrap everything up in a neat little package.
Does it count as a noona romance when the man in the relationship wakes up one day in the body of a teenager, à la 18 Again?
The ickiest noona romance is without a doubt Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol. 🤮

High School King of Savvy, hands down. You can't watch Seo In Guk in that role and not adore him. And contrary to every single other person on the planet, I LOVE SOO YOUNG! Give me awkward, mousy female leads opposite cutie patooties all day, every day.

Mousy, awkward female characters are considered passe and eve offensive now by most people, but they will always be one of my favorite female character tropes.

Sigh... When I see people talk about Romance is a Bonus Book, my heart swoons with joy. This drama is my favorite drama ever!
Truthfully, I had watched a lot of dramas before and after it but I just seem to always go back to it. I was very reluctant to make it my favorite because I genuinely have other favorites for other reasons and I wanted to relegate it to just Noona Romance but I can't!!! I love it!
From wardrobe to lines to characters to story to set and pairings. DaebakGrits, I also doubted the pairing but I surrender to the chemistry these two give me 🥺
