Strangers Again: Episodes 1-2
by missvictrix
Snappy yet sweet, raucous yet surprisingly thoughtful, Strangers Again lands a great premiere week. We meet our heroine, learn about her divorce, and not a moment later does her ex-husband show up at her office door.
Editor’s note: The drama formerly known as Can We Be Strangers has done a last minute switch of their official English title, which we’ll now use.
EPISODES 1-2 WEECAP
I know we’re only on Week 1, but I suspect this drama was perfectly cast. Kang So-ra shines as the talented, gorgeous, and successful attorney OH HA-RA who is secretly (or not so secretly) still a disaster after her husband cheated on her a few years back. Even in our first episodes, she strikes a great balance of fiery fury and genuine vulnerability.
Then, on the other side of the coin we have her ex-husband GU EUN-BUM (Jang Seung-jo), whom I would really love to hate in the role of unfaithful husband… but somehow can’t? He’s charming and puckish — hence our heroine’s dilemma. And the genius of this casting.
Also, by giving us only our heroine’s side of the story, there’s enough reasonable doubt to make us wonder what really caused this couple to divorce years ago — and the teasing out of their relationship in both the past and the present is where the meat of this story lies.
But first, we have to understand our heroine, the “goddess of litigation,” who’s living high on the hog — partly because she’s a brilliant attorney, partly because she gets a huge monthly alimony from her ex-husband. The drama paints the picture of this broken marriage for us over the course of the first episode, with enough hints of Ha-ra’s anger over adultery that it’s no surprise when it’s confirmed that that was what broke up her own marriage.
In a sharp contrast of circumstances, her ex-husband Eun-bum is down to his last 8000 won, desperately needs a job, and though we don’t see much into his circumstances yet, he definitely gives off the vibes of having been kicked in the pants by life. Or Ha-ra. Or perhaps both. She has no problem noting Eun-bum as “a penniless piece of sh*t and live witness of karma” lol. Her fury takes it one step past normal and into the extreme, and that’s part of where the drama gets its personality from (more on that later).
The firm where Ha-ra works is run by CEO Seo (Jeon Bae-soo) and CEO Hong (Gil Hae-yeon), both brilliant in their roles already. CEO Hong is the wise and firm hand that keeps their meetings from devolving in daily fisticuffs, and CEO Seo is the one that sleeps through meetings and seemingly has the ability to see right through people. He’s close with Eun-bum, takes pity on him, and hires him to the firm (admittedly while drunk lol). He even tells Eun-bum that he’s still in love with Ha-ra — and interestingly, Eun-bum doesn’t even try to deny it. (This is the closest we see into Eun-bum in our premiere week, and I’m hoping the camera turns to his side of things more as the drama progresses.)
But back to Ha-ra and her “frenzy button.” She’s furious that her bosses would even think of taking on her cheating ex-husband, but she’s also in the middle of a very high-profile divorce case that seems to be an impossible win. Ha-ra’s case involves a famous actor (cameo by Park Yong-woo) who’s seeking to divorce his wife (cameo by Jung Yumi) whom he suspects of having an affair. He also wants their prenup to be honored… for which there is yet no legal precedent in Korea.
Here’s where we get a taste of the drama’s structure, and the episodic legal aspect comes into play: each episode this week features a new case of Ha-ra’s, and much like we’ve seen in other character-driven yet “case of the week” dramas, the case pushes forward the plot, and shines light on a new aspect of our characters and their story. And I have to say, it was quite well done this week. The cases felt like they pushed the overarching plot forward, instead of the plot being build from the cases themselves.
As this first case is teased out, we see that Ha-ra really does need a hand, and Eun-bum offers to help her in exchange for “letting” him get hired at the firm, reminding her of their great synergy together in the past. And now it’s time for our first inkling that Ha-ra’s still got feelings for him despite everything — indeed, her high-spirited rancor seems to suggest that too — and she agrees to his deal.
The two are every bit as awesome a team as we might expect, and the case is won — and with the highest-record alimony the firm has ever secured for a client. But it’s not all celebration. The case also teases out the deep wound of betrayal that being cheated on causes — and this is the point where I knew I loved this drama. In the middle of being cheeky and loud, it also takes the time to give us thoughtful moments, and show the more raw emotions that are also at play.
Ha-ra’s actor client is more heartbroken than even after his win — since the adultery was proven — and we see him display the same wild anger that Ha-ra has towards her own unfaithful spouse. But we also see the wounds left behind, and when her client asks her how he can ever be happy after being betrayed like this, she also cracks, and we see that underneath her goddess-like fury is a deeply hurt woman just trying to find happiness again.
In addition to giving us this great balance of humor and pathos, the drama also has a lot of fun playing with the character of Eun-bum. The heart of the story naturally sits with Ha-ra — the wronged wife — but Eun-bum is far more than just our love-to-hate cheating husband.
He might be nervy and capable of preposterous things (like setting her up on a surprise blind date with his colleague), but we also get quick moments that show us there is much more to him than meets the eye. Whether it’s how he rises to protect Ha-ra from a skeevy attorney, is concerned for her safety in his junker of a car, or still has these moments of closeness with her that give us a glimmer of what their married life was like — there is definitely more to Eun-bum. But for now, he seems about 75% jerk. Even CEO Seo tells him angrily, “You have so many people to spit on your grave the grass will grow no problem!”
Eun-bum also feigns disinterest in Ha-ra’s personal life, and seems only motivated by wanting to get out of paying her the alimony — which is what leads to the aforementioned date setup. As it turns out, though, the colleague in question, MIN JAE-GYEOM (Mu Jin-sung), is actually a really nice guy. Every objection Ha-ra can muster against him he gently disproves. He even sees through her initial insincerity… which leads to true sincerity between them. Their relationship grows quickly, and by the end of Episode 2 they’re kissing and speaking in banmal.
Ha-ra’s case in Episode 2 also fires up her adultery frenzy button — but in this case we see her sympathizing with the husband who’s been cheated on (not her client!), while Eun-bum relates to the wife who was neglected enough to fall in love with someone else.
Make no mistake about it, these divorce cases are each complicated, mature, and there’s no simple solution for any of them. And that’s exactly the point the drama is trying to make. Though it’s Ha-ra’s job to litigate and win cases for her clients, we quickly see there is so much more going on than settlement agreements and admissible evidence. With matters of the heart, it’s always going to be messy.
Even though I already have adultery fatigue, I quite like the drama’s way of pulling us into the complexities of the cases not only for the clients, but how it affects our heroine’s own struggles and desire for happiness. The show makes no apologies for adultery, but it does paint well drawn pictures of couples that have been broken by infidelities, lies, and betrayal.
Perhaps that’s why the drama’s penchant for exaggerated imaginary scenes is so welcome and so fun. Whether it’s Ha-ra letting Eun-bum fall from a Cliff of Doom, the steak knife she wishes she could attack him with, or the tennis volleying as a metaphor for the way arguing a case functions in court, the drama needs this element to lighten the heavier themes, and I enjoyed the color it brought to the story overall.
The drama is definitely doing a lot — and in 12 episodes — but after our premiere week I’m left thinking that it knows exactly where it’s going. And I’m happy to watch as the story continues to tease out not only what happened between our couple in the past, but if there is any room for them to find happiness together once again.

Thank you for a brilliant recap!
This is the first airing K-drama I have watched in the past several months, and I am enjoying the beautiful bickering couple's chemistry!
Hoping they'll end up together LOL. Happy to start watching this show because OST 1 (you can hear a bit of it at the end of Ep 1) is sung by my favourite singer who hasn't sung an OST for a drama airing on TV since TKEM :)

So I was quite shocked in the first episode when they revealed the reason for their split was due cheating. But episode two made me feel pretty certain that’s not the case and there is more going on.
They are slowly giving us snippets of what happened in their relationship and I’m happy to wait and put the pieces together.
That said, I absolutely love their chemistry and them working as a team. I really like how they fall into (what I’m assuming is) their past dynamic so easily. They’ve known each other for ten years so it’s hilarious how they know what the other one is thinking. And so in typical lawyer fashion they already know what argument their ex-spouse is going to make. Heh
I loved how Oh Ha-ra tried to pull Gu Eun-bum down a peg, by insinuating that she doesn’t like talking to men rather she prefers talking to them with her body but then Eun-bum immediately twists her words back at her. LOL lawyers
Got to say my favourite scene was in Gu Eun-bum’s car (Rebecca 2.0?), when Ha-ra’s seat suddenly goes backward and Eun-bum tries to fix it! It was the most unromantic and yet the most romantic scene I’ve saw. Ha! I need more of that pls
Also beats the typical motorbike rescue scene that we’ve seen a million times already

A very interesting premiere week, really crossing my fingers that Eunbum isn't a cheater though and that there's more to the story...I'm a sucker for his smile 😭

I love your assessment of our ML as 75% jerk- at least right now- because it is spot on. As he is presently portrayed, he definitely seems to be that sort of person who would cheat, not that there is a specific "type" per se.
Min Jae-geom really is a nice guy. Is this going to be one of those shows where we end up asking why the FL did not go for the SML?
Or is this going to be one of those shows where the wrier pulls a rabbit out of a hat and surprises us with something entirely out of the blue?
I guess I am hooked and will have to keep watching.
The shows frankness about the impact of adultery was very refreshing. In my professional life I have certainly seen the depths of the anger and hurt that result.
But i have to admit that as a lawyer I found one thing extremely jarring: The idea that it is acceptable for a lawyer to meet with an opposing party who has counsel without that other person's lawyer present. Is that really allowed in Korea? In my country it would be a very serious breach of ethics- of the kind which carries serious consequences. It may have made for better drama, but I found it quite disturbing.
That being said I think I liked the show much better once I had watched the second episode.

I loved the opening scene reenacting the scene from Again my Life. So far, I have been enjoying the drama and am looking forward to more of our leads' bickering scenes and how their past story will unfold. Please keep it up, show.

but I must say the word charming raises my feathers because charming cheater guys are narcissists and they should all be dumped in a pit and covered with dirt. they can destroy the universe. even if he turns out "changed"... but thats a false message. narcissists cannot change.

Couple reunion is one of my favorite drama tropes, so I was just so easily hooked by the drama. I think there's misunderstanding that the ex wife thinks the ex husband was cheating, though I'm not quite sure right now. I'm quite like ML. But if the reason behind the divorce is cheating and abuse, there's no chance in hell she should back together again.
I think I watched J drama with similar theme and setup in which 2 divorce lawyers working together. Forget the title.

Is it weird that I want him to have actually cheated? From the narrative point, this would make a far better and more in-depth story than whatever crazy thing anyone can come up to justify making your ex think you have cheated on them. In the conversation with their latest client, Eun Bum explained it well enough - if you decide to wrong someone, know that there would be consequences and that you should follow through. He is doing exactly that - he has been paying a normal salary level alimony to his ex and doesn't pine for her even though he clearly still loves her. Yeah and I don't for a second believe Eun Bum is dating the women he had an affair with.

It’s impossible to hate Eun-Bum because it comes with Jang Seung-jo‘a face. 😅. I am shallow like that.
I am most certain it’s not a case of cheating because I almost see no denial from him or any emotions . He just takes her fury. The scene in the car (where she talks about Karma, his mom punishing him etc) shows a glimpse of his face. The sad broken face.
Even if the drama goes there, I do hope it ends with him apologizing, giving her a reason so she can move on and find her happiness. She deserves that. And may be they can be strangers again.
I won’t mind if the show does manage to pull off the latter since it would be an interesting story.
I do like the show. Even the legal stuff isn’t bothering me!!

Of course Ha Ra still loves him. I think it is weird the folks in the drama are acting like that is crazy. She left him because he cheated(I really hope he cheated and learned his lesson), rather than some other nonsense reason, not because she didn't love him. She is upset because he broke their trust. That being said we have mostly seen things from her point of view, so maybe we will see it from his first. Our leads have great chemistry and this looks like a fun ride with no criminal shenanigans.

The Korean law was what made me the most frustrated in these episodes. I really don't like the fact that you can be denied a divorce. It's so weird and unfair. In my country, if one wants to divorce but not the other, you can do a procedure in protective measures of the conjugal union and after 2 years, you can divorce.
For the drama itself, I didn't like how immature were the leads. I wished for more subtlety...

After watching the first 2 episodes, I think it will be hard to root for the leads to get back together. Either the ML cheated on the FL or best case he placed the needs of a female friend over his marriage and the FL thus causing the FL 3 years of pain. Either way, I'm not sure the FL should ever trust him again as it appears she and their marriage was never his top priority. I think it will be even worse if it turns out that he preferred to allow the FL to mistakenly believe that he cheated on her "to protect her" as that would show a complete lack of respect for the FL. Kinda like those "noble idiots" who to avoid causing future pain, decide to inflict massive pain currently.

Ok, the comment section is quite interesting. Majority of them disapprove of the ML, but I do not see him that way, maybe because of my bias towards Jang Seung Jo. Also, for a drama dealing with divorces, I expected a lot of melancholy, but it is upbeat with loads of good dialogues. So, I am fine if the drama chooses a noble idiocy route for the ML backstory because anything else would make this drama a sad/frustrating watch.

I'm intrigued by the "other woman." If he did cheat with her and leave the FL for her (I'm not convinced he actually cheated), he clearly isn't with her now. Personally I think there's some other story behind it, I doubt they would make the ML someone who cheated on the FL. Not that I think making her think he cheated is any better.
Also, when they had FL having a convo with ML but it turns out it was just in her imagination, did anyone else get horrible flashbacks to Love is for Suckers? Lol

So far, this is exactly what I hoped it would be. It's fun and lively, but I appreciate the sensitive approach it took in portraying the emotional toll that adultery takes on people who truly believe that marriage is forever. I agree with others that the ML as written and shown so far is not particularly sympathetic, but Jang Seung-jo's angelic face and undeniable charm make it difficult to hate him. I also like the case-of-the-week structure, and find this peak into Korean divorce law both surprising and interesting.
I'm a big fan of stories that feature bickering leads with a complicated history, especially when it's done with a lighter touch yet still doesn't spare viewers deep emotional payoff. So this one is currently a must watch and I hope that continues.

I find it very hard to like him when he's inserting himself in her life, all the while he like everyone else can sense the hurt she's carrying with her. I'd rather he repents and talks out and then NOT being endgame rather that it all being a stupid misunderstanding.

So, am I the only one who hated pretty much everything in this drama? I watched the first ep and that was enough for me.
There is no way in my opinion to justify the behaviour of the two mains who are simply childish. It is absolutely clear in my mind that he never cheated. Seriously, it is simply forbidden in the kdrama world. So he must have had an idiotic reason... and now he is back to torment her some more?
Let's not talk about the client who almost run over his wife. I would have called the police... not jumped into the car to open my heart to him. Nothing made sense in this drama.
For me it is a BIG NO.

Finally Jang Seung-jo as an ML in a rom-com! He’s such a joy to watch even though his role here is a cheater. Though I doubt Korea would go that route if they do want the OTP to end up together in the end, which they will bcs again, this is kdramaland.
Also, not a fan of the shouting in the meeting room. Too much and the bickering of the other office couple, nah.
I’m just happy that I’m seeing JSJ and KSR in a rom-com and also, I wasn’t able to watch Good Detective S2 so yay!

I enjoyed the complexity of the drama leads so far. I hope we don't have to wait too long for Eun Bum's perspective on things.
I think I'd be happy if it is true that the ML cheated and we have the FL coming to terms with the end of the relationship and finding happiness elsewhere. It would be a refreshing conclusion. I'm not sure it will happen though.

I've watched other shows with cheating, so I wouldn't find impossible for the ML to be a cheater, but the way they haven't show anything from his perspective, or anything from the past, makes me think that he didn't cheat.
I mean, by now Kdramaland should've give us a nice flashback of the wife finding her husband in bed with the other girl.
Besides, except for Love Affairs in the Afternoon, I've never seen a cheater that didn't treat people like completely trash (The Miracle We Met, for ex). Kdramas don't make cheaters just cheat, they usually make them the most disturbing person in the whole show.
So, the fact the we have zero information about their marriage (besides the cheating) and that the ML doesn't treats people like trash, is because he didn't cheat. They're preparing us for a sad backstory.
I don't know if they're going to give him cancer, I don't know if their going to say that their marriage had deep problems, or if there's another excuse; but I'm pretty sure he said he cheated just to break their relationship completely. That's what he really wanted.
I hope I'm wrong tho. I want the show to be interesting, realistic, not predictable.
Oh, and the cases... Was I supposed to feel bad for those guys? One almost hits his wife with car??? The other one lies and avoids his wife for 4 years. My aroace self can't understand how important sex can be in relationships, but I don't think there's a point for being with someone that tries to protect their pride to the point where the end up hurting you. So even if they fixed their sexual issue, I would've told her to get a divorce. Aren't couples supposed to lean on each other? trust and protect each other? Jesus.
I think the best way to watch this show (for me), is to not think about it.

I liked these first two eps alot, though a little worried about the preview.
The scene in the ML's car when our FL realized that maybe she'd let some of her anger go and had moved on from that more raw space of pain and rage felt like a cleansing breath. I don't want to see her character go back to just being reactive.

All I think at the conclusion of these episodes was I feel like there is more to Eun Bum's story. I don't know their dynamic when they were dating or how lovey dovey they were but it seems like he made a conscious choice to cheat and then deal with the consequences. Maybe objectively he's a shameless jerk but I didn't feel any hate or disgust when watching him (maybe because his first scenes are him hanging then falling off a cliff, being evicted from his office, getting beaten up by a former client, and having no where else to go except a law firm where he's surrounded by hostility and gossip).
I think it's obvious that Ha Ra isn't over him or at least she still has complicated feelings for him.
I know that a major driving force for Eun Bum to set her up with Jae Gyeom is to not have to pay alimony but so far the guy actually seems like a good person. Makes me a little nervous for what's going to be revealed in future episodes.
I just don't know if this a drama where they'll end up back together or better off as collaegues (possibly friendly). I'm kinda thinking I want the latter.

I am really curious about this show; I think its the same excitement I got for love is for suckers. Also the ML, he's just soo handomee I can't help falling for him!
If it goes like a regular kdrama it'd be great to see them get together and all because their chemistry is too good. And for this he'd actually not have cheated, but actually protected her or smth, but that's where it'll get unrealistic and I'll love it for that but the unrealism~
Or, he'd actually have cheated but that'd be soo sad and bad irl.
Idk what'll happen but I love the chemistry (of the 2nd couple too!)
