News bites: November 23, 2022

  • tvN has my full attention with their latest poster for Alchemy of Souls 2 and be still my heart because December isn’t even here yet and Lee Jae-wook (Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol) is already making me blush. Go Yoon-jung (Law School) is holding her own as well, but I’m afraid that all I can see is Lee Jae-wook. That look! Those hands! Even with less than three weeks to go, part two of the series can’t come soon enough on December 10. [News1]

  • A potential Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes) and Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) pairing is on the horizon with both actors now currently in talks to star in Queen of Tears. Still in the planning stages, production for the drama is in the talented hands of writer Park Ji-eun (Crash Landing on You, You From Another Star) and PD Kim Won-hee (Little Women, Vincenzo). [Newsen]

  • As seen in the newest poster, our lovable drinking buddies Lee Sun-bin (Team Bulldog: Operation Off-duty Investigation), Han Sun-hwa (Undercover), and Jung Eun-ji (Blind) – as well as tag-along Choi Siwon (Love is for Suckers) – will be taking some time out of the city for TVING’s Work Later Drink Now 2. But, rest assured, our heroines will still be clinking glasses and drunkenly returning to our screens this coming December 9. [Sports Kyunghyang]
  • Over on Disney+, character posters have come out for the creepy fantasy Connect, featuring leads: Jung Hae-in (Snowdrop), Go Kyung-pyo (Love in Contract), Kim Hye-joon (Inspector Koo), and Kim Roi-ha (Kingdom: Ashin of the North). Directed by filmmaker Takashi Miike (The Great Yokai War: Guardians), we can strap in for a gory ride when the mystery-horror releases all 6 episodes on December 7. [News]

  • After (over)paying his dues in supporting roles, Seo Ji-hoon (Revenge of Others) has been cast in the lead role for a new mystery-fantasy about fortune telling. Titled King of Destiny (roughly translated), the web novel adaptation will be written and directed by Park Sun-jae – with Lee Sun-joo co-writing. Filming is set to begin early next year. [Sports Chosun]
  • Yoon Ji-on (Tomorrow) has been added to the cast of Is It a Coincidence, joining Kim So-hyun (Love Alarm 2) and Chae Jong-hyeop (Unlock the Boss). The coming-of-age romance is planning to start filming before the year ends with PD Song Hyun-wook (Golden Spoon, The King’s Affection) at the helm and scripts by Park Geu-ro. [News1]
  • The first stills have dropped for KBS’s Brain Cooperation, featuring our ~genius~ neuroscientist Jung Yong-hwa (Sell Your Haunted House). Also starring Cha Tae-hyun (Police University), Kwak Sun-young (Behind Every Star), and Yeh Ji-won (So Do Sol Sol La La Sol), the comedy will be ringing in the new year with a January 2 premiere. Is it coincidence? and Brain cooperation could be potentials for the watchlist, however I will wait patiently to see if they are available and if they stick with their respective briefs slice of life with romance and comedy. I know there is still time to be disappointed so expectations are being kept well in check.

Is it an exaggeration to say my breath stopped when I saw the poster. Hmm...nope. I understand your predicament @tccolb. 🤭
Almost as heart fluttering as hearing the possible pairing of Kim Ji Won and Kim Soo Hyun.
I have been hungry for an well-done immersive fantasy (thank you, AoS) so I hope King of Destiny fits that bill.

That poster ... still trying to catch my breath. The hands! Last time the main poster featured each character with one eye covered, which turned out to have a lot to do with the part 1 theme of blindness, both real and figurative. This time it's Wook's mouth that's covered. Hmmm.

I'm super excited for for Kim Ji Won and Kim Soo Hyun, what a pairing I didn't know I wanted.

I am warily excited for Connect.

Will try King of Destiny and Is it a coincidence.

So the mystery surrounding the hand models in the first look poster Alchemy of Souls Part Two is solved 😏
I love the spirit of the copywriter of Work Later Drink Now's poster! The caption says "We only eat dew," and it's a phrase which is used to describe extremely restrictive diets. It used to be a (stereotypical) trait associated to strikingly good-looking people because since they don't look mortal, they don't survive on a typical human diet. It is also a tongue-in-cheek reference to South Korea's national soju brand Chamisul 😁 The supposed countryside life docu format of the 2nd season feels meta due to the fact our three leading ladies shot a camping variety show together shortly after the completion of 1st season.

Thanks for the insight on Work Later! All that would have gone completely over my non-Korean-speaking head. It's clever like all the promos we've seen, especially the animated posters, although the show isn't for me.

Are they never going to get past the talking stage and move to confirmation? 😒

Sometimes fan pics from filming for dramas show up online literal months before they actually confirm the casting and I never understand what they’re waiting for. I guess they try to spread the news out so people don’t forget about the show before it airs.

But like they’re not fooling anyone 😭

That poster is stunning. I have nothing else to say about that, except December can't get here fast enough. Hong sisters, don't let me down in the final act!

And I really like that pairing for "Is it a Coincidence."

AoS fans: going ga ga over the posters

Me: but it looks like the poster for a modern drama? Not a fantasy? And at least I have even more confirmation now that I would never have been able to watch it just because the costuming and hair would've driven me up the wall. It's driving me up the wall right now actually.

Sorry, I had to get that out somehow 🤭😂😂😂

The first season seemed like every actor’s stylist never communicated with any of the other stylists and there was a serious wardrobe and makeup identity crisis.

But the actors made even the most stupid styling work thanks to their faces. Wish that could be me.

An apt analysis and summary, yes 🤣

Sic: [becomes part of the spectacle, in the role of Greek chorus/cranky color commentator.]

I thought the makeup was all over the place and actually preferred the modern hairstyles on the men, but I had no issue with the costuming once I accepted it as wuxia Bridgerton, including color themes of the day or team colors for the various factions and families.

Yeah... I have too many opinions and feelings about costume design, costume in film and storytelling, the genre of fantasy itself, and art direction to be able to do that, but also I'm not watching, so I only have to be tortured from the sidelines.

I don't like the last poster of AoS. The FL looks like a deer caught in the headlights of a car and the ML like he had a hand fetish... LJW said in an interview he had difficulties to get in his character 3 years after and this season is only 10 episodes long, so I hope he found his flow not too late.

1. December 10. Okay. Come quickly. This teasers should just stop teasing. Also, I like the tone of this still.

2. Kim Ji-Won, You From Another Star's writer, Little Women and Vincenzo's PD. I don't need anything more to convince me. And this'll be my time to properly examine the Kim Soo-hyun that is so much talked about here.
Title = Queen of Tears☺️. You know how to get me to watch something.

3. 😂 is all I have for whatever made Choi Siwon look like that.

7. Brain Corporation. Medical research or medical?
Please be good.

Oh I just realised Queen of Tears is a Kim Hee Won x Park Ji Eun pd/writernim match up... Interesting...
First, not really the kind of director I'd pair with Park Ji Eun, if I'm being very honest.
Second, I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to KHW now, having seen three of her shows and hated all of them; there's something about her understanding of thematic continuity and characterization that I absolutely despise, even if everything she directs LOOKS stylish and pretty.
I still want to like another PJE drama after You From Another Star, and although Ji Won is hit or miss for me, the Ji Won x Soo Hyun pairing has me interested, if it's ever finalised.
Sigh.
I guess I too, will finalise whether or not I will watch this at a later date. Pfft.

So many dramas coming out I'm excited for!
Alchemy of Souls... the one thing that kept me from being 100% in love with it was the female lead. The actress was good, but not amazing to me, and I felt like her character kinda fizzled out after a promising start. So I'm excited for the change in actress, and a hopefully powered up Naksu. And yeah... in agreement on that poster. Woof.
Looking forward to learning more about the upcoming King of Destiny. I've migrated over to C-Dramas lately for my dose of fantasy/martial arts historicals, and would love to see K-drama's take on the genre. Hoping the success of Alchemy of Souls inspires more in that vein.
Connect looks so awesome! Can't wait! And while I'm not typically into medical dramas, I liked Jung Yong-hwain in Sell your Haunted House, so, staying tuned...

I find the AOS poster kind of awkward, but I am looking forward to Go Yoon-jung as the FL. I really want her to be a badass, but I'm afraid I'm going to be disappointed.

I'm not really a fan of either Kim Ji-won or Kim Soo-hyun, but I am a fan of PD Kim Won-hee.

I'm so excited for Work Later, Drink Now 2!

Connect looks weird, but I will give it a try for the cast.

I'm loving the poster for Alchemy of Souls' second season, but I didn't finish the first one and don't know if I ever will so I can't check out the second one.

Queen of Tears sounds like a sageuk. If it's not I want to watch. If it is, I may end up not watching it. But the pairing of the two Kim's would probably be really good. And with the PD behind Little Women at the helm? I'm intrigued.

Work Later Drink Now is returning for another season next month, which, yay.

Can't wait for Connect.

The writer's first two "Queen of ..." dramas are not sageuks, they're present-day family/marriage/chaebol melos - but they were a really long time ago and she's done some different high-profile dramas since then, so who knows if they'll be set in the same universe. The potential casting is certainly attention-getting.

Am I the only one who got excited seeing many stills of Jung Yong-hwa? My first Oppa (from We Got Married) seems to be getting many interesting projects! I was impressed with him and Jang Na-ra in Sell Your Haunted House and this Brain Cooperation thing can be another good project from him. I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is another good show to begin the new year.

I miss seeing Jung Somin in the posters and feel funny seeing Ook with a new person. Why can’t I compartmentalise? As a viewer, I’m weirdly loyal even if my rational brain says get over it. But…, this is a different person to Mudeok and I’m not sure at all it is going to work for me.

Maybe it will help if you visualize that inside JSM's Mudeok was GYJ's Naksu? That worked for me, or in my case, was the reason why I was not fully onboard with JSM and LJW chemistry.

@jingbee @dncingemma Unpopular opinion: I don't think the romantic chemistry between JSM and LJW was that great. They were great friends on-screen and I bought that, but the romance was flat. Looking forward to GYJ's turn as Naksu 😊

I am with you on this. I was also not sold on the romance. I always preferred for them to be mentor and friends who would die together for their cause. IMO, the story would have been more epic that way.

@Jingbee: Thanks. I appreciate your advice. I really like Jung Somin’s presence as an actor, loved their rapport and didn’t care much about their romantic chemistry or lack thereof which surprised me. I realised that for them I preferred a strong and vital mentorship leading to a solid friendship over a romance. Quite often romance doesn’t last but a life-affirming friendship is worth much more.
