[Drama chat] What’s your favorite rewatch?

Dramas come in all shapes and sizes. Some you want to forget the second they’re over. Some you want to keep in a corner of your heart and never watch again. And some you’re ready to rewatch before they’re even over.

What makes a drama rewatchable for you? Is is pure squee factor? Is it a plot so rich you know you’ll enjoy it more the second time? I admit I rarely rewatch dramas — there’s just too much to keep up with on the live schedule. But also, there’s this feeling that the way the drama hit me when I first watched it will never be the same. That’s what happens when I try to rewatch old favorites like Healer and City Hunter. It’s not that I love them any less, it’s that I’m a different viewer the second time around. So for me, I’d rather keep the stories in my heart than rewatch them on the screen.

Are you a drama rewatcher? What’s your favorite drama to rewatch?

Let the chatting begin!

Full rewatch? One Spring Night, You From Another Star, Legend of the Blue Sea, Goblin, Something About 1%, I'll Come to You When the Weather is Nice, Marriage Not Dating, and On the Way to the Airport. I love romantic dramas.

There's lots of others that I will just watch specific episodes of.

It's Pinocchio, Heirs, and W: Two worlds.
I don't think it's anyone's fav rewatch, but it's mine. I don't know why I love it, probably because these were my first dramas. Pinocchio was quirky, cheesy, and had one hell of a plot. It made me cry and laugh. The same goes for W: Two worlds. Heirs was a classic love story, but it was worth watching.

Here the list of k-dramas I've rewatched the most:

- My girl (first k-drama I ever watched, it's a special one for me)
- Healer
- Discovery of romance (I thought this was pretty underrated, but recently they made a c-drama version. So I guess I was not the only one who loved it)
- You're beautiful (I live for that wild pig scene, it makes me laugh so much every single time!)
- Secret garden
- Master's sun

Kdrama- Forest of Secrets
Cdrama-The Untamed
Jdrama-Cherry Magic

I don't have a Thai or Tawainese drama because they are all kinda forgetable once you are done with them.

Not big on re-watches, unless I'm in a serious drama slump, and craving a certain mood I'm just not finding elsewhere. Only ever re-watched 4 dramas:

Healer: Really enjoyed my second watch of this one - it was cool seeing all the pieces knowing where they would eventually land, and the romance was just as awesome the second time. I don't see myself watching it a third time though.

Mr. Queen: Possibly the funniest K-drama ever for me, and it was just as hilarious the second time. I never finished my re-watch though - despite being one of the few who actually loved the ending. the political plot just wasn't engaging enough for me to see it through again.

The Princess' Man: My favorite historical drama, hands down, and I loved it even more the second time. I think it's because I didn't care for the male lead until after he went all dark version the first time around, which had me seeing him in a better light the second. Would absolutely watch it again.

1% of Anything: Loved it the first time, was less enthused the second. While their relationship ended up healthy and communicative, the beginning - not so much. I've just lost patience with this particular type of ML as I've gotten older. Would not re-watch.

I rewatch a few of the best dramas. I'll often watch the first time on my own, then rewatch with my wife the ones I think she'll like. She's a lot more sensitive to violence, spooky stuff, too steamy, etc., so this way she can watch knowing exactly what she's in for.

Most rewatched: I Am Not a Robot (watched 4 times)
Others I've watched 3 times:
- Healer
- Goblin
- Descendants of the Sun
- My Love from Another Star
- While You Were Sleeping

I have a few... previous year rewatch - Reply 1988, You Are Beautiful. This year's rewatch were Our Beloved Summer, Queen for Seven Days, Find Me In Your Memory and Love Between Fairy and Devil. OBS and LBFAD were my faves this year so far. I tend to rewatch dramas that I love when I miss the characters or just revisit the drama since nothing else interest me on what is on.

I am a frequent re-watcher. Usually after some time has passed, but not always - once in a while I have one drama that I watch over and over again in rapid succession.

I've re-watched 90% of the dramas I've ever watched - the other 10% I either refuse to endure again, or never finished in the first place. I have several memorized to the point of knowing which specific episode has a particular scene I want to see again, and where in that episode it is so that I can fast forward directly to it. It's one of my weirder character traits.

In my early Asian drama days (circa 2010-2014), I frequently rewatched my favorite scenes and episodes and would eagerly rewatch entire dramas if I could get a friend or family member to watch with me. For Kdramas this was Coffee Prince, Healer, City Hunter, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, You're Beautiful, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Queen In-hyun's Man, Secret Garden, and The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry. For Jdramas, it was Hana Yori Dango, Hana Kimi, Kimi wa Petto, Mei-chan no Shitsuji, and Pride. From Taiwan there was In Time With You, Love You 10,000 Years (movie), and Mars.

Fast forward to 2022. I began rewatching several of these and half the time I ended up wishing that I hadn't, because it spoiled my fond memories. Some rewatches were fine - I still love Mars, Healer, and Hana Kimi as much now as I did back then. I finally made the decision to stop rewatching just in case I regretted it like I did with Secret Garden and Coffee Prince.

Funny enough, I'm able to rewatch some of my current favorites without that same issue - I've watched You Are My Glory three times already, and I'm certain I will rewatch Love Between Fairy and Devil again pretty soon (trying to hold out until my daughter is ready to watch it with me). I've also watched Her Private Life, What's Wrong With Secretary Kim, and Strong Woman Do Bong Soon twice. Although I will admit to skipping the mobster side stories in SWDBS.

I've been watching Asian dramas for maybe 15 years now, and up until more recently, I never rewatched any. It wasn't a fear of not liking the drama anymore if I rewatched it that kept me from doing it. I just had a voracious need to consume every drama known to man, and rewatching dramas severely cuts into that, lol. That and I never watched a drama that I felt a pull to watch again, even my most favorite drama watches, so I never tried it. (I did attempt two rewatches of my first drama at different points, the Taiwanese Fated to Love You, both times for the nostalgia, but I couldn't get past the midway point. That drama is a trip, lol.)

At some point though, I found I was far enough away from most of the dramas I'd seen to be intrigued into watching them again. I'm not sure if my first rewatch was High School King of Savvy or When the Camellia Blooms, but I ended up rewatching both. When Camellia finished airing in 2019, I immediately wanted to watch it again. That drama left such a strong impression on me, as I feel a really deep affinity with the female lead. I've now watched Camellia two or three times? (I've lost count, lol.) High School King of Savvy has probably my ultimate bias, Seo In Guk, in what is one of his most charming and adorable roles. I also love the female lead even though she would be considered a very passe, even offensive, character trope today. Mousy heroines are my jam. I've watched Savvy twice now, possibly three times. (Again, I've lost count, lol.)

I've now fully immersed myself into rewatching dramas. I've rewatched five so far this year, 3 last year, and 2 the year before. I have a list on MyDramaList keeping track of all the dramas I've rewatched as well as a list of all the dramas I want to eventually rewatch.

I've mostly rewatched dramas that I really loved the first time, and I'm happy to say that I still love all of those dramas after a rewatch. I've also rewatched a couple that I didn't love the first time. I didn't get what History of the Salaryman was trying to do the first time I watched it, so I didn't appreciate it like it deserved. But when I rewatched it, the entire story made so much more sense, and I respect the storytelling now. Personal Taste was a drama I hated in my first rewatch, but a second viewing has made me actually really love it, particularly the female lead.

I just finished rewatching The Secret Life of My Secretary earlier this week, and it's the perfect blend of cotton candy goodness with surprising emotional depth. I really love the romance and the male lead and the female lead.

The full list of dramas I've rewatched:
High School King of Savvy
When the Camellia Blooms
History of the Salaryman
King2Hearts
Personal Taste
Because This is my First Life
Just You (Taiwanese)
We Married as a Job (Japanese)
Weighlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
The Secret life of My Secretary

All of my rewatches have been full rewatches, btw. I have some kind of mental...

Sometimes I rewatch episodes as I wait for the next episode, but if you're talking about rewatching after some time has passed: Chief Kim! I rewatch without skipping any scenes and the rewatch brings more details that I've missed before since that drama is so packed with jokes. Stranger first season was also a great rewatch for me.

10 years ago, it was My Girl, My Name is Kim Samsoon, and Delightful Girl Chunhyang.

There are times when I pick up a video clip or want to revisit a scene and then get sucked into rewatching, like Innocent Man. Or on the dark side - Secret Garden. It came on my aunt's tv once and I got sucked into rewatching for a bit. I was sucked in when it was airing and then the aftermath was like "wtf did i watch?" but when it came on in front of me years later, I had trouble turning away. That drama was definitely laced with crack.

There're a couple of Asian dramas and movies I rewatch for the OTP scenes only:
- Because this is my first life
- That Winter, the wind blows (the OTP is just so GORGEOUS, mA!)
- 1% of Anything (2016)
- Strawberry on the Shortcake
- The Painter of the Wind (I love this show! And all the fanfics)
- You are the Apple of my Eye
- Big
- Corner with love
- My Holo Love
- A love to kill
- Yong Pal

And then there're the shows/movies that I'm willing to rewatch in full just to see another person's reactions:
- Signal
- The Princess' Man
- Memorist
- 1 Litre of Tears
- Train to Busan
- Sketch
- 18 Again
- Flower of Evil
- Stranger

Edit: Too long! Cut out many dramas!

I tend to re-watch favorite actors and/or really soppy love stories. The following dramas and the re-watch (number 1=1 re-watch):

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (2 - I mean, Park Hyung-sik)
Alchemy of Souls Part 1 (the Naksu/Mu-Deok/Jin Bu-Yeon conundrum needed a lot of clarification)
Mr. Queen (1)
Happiness (1)
Goblin (2 - mainly to figure the whole thing out)
Touch Your Heart (1 - just for pure fun)
Hwarang (2 - fast-forward all crying by Ah-ro)
W (2 - again, to figure out plot)
Healer (2 - "Eternal Love" and Ji Chang-wook - what's not to like?)
A Business Proposal (1)
Autumn's Concerto (2 - despite blatant tropes (evil mother! amnesia! chaebol shenanigans!) . . . there's the beauty of Van Ness Wu's fabulous eyes . . . 2010)

And on and on . . . if the leads are good, if the love story is great, if the ending is happy and if there's not a lot of stupidity, it's on the list.

I'm late to the party...
but my all time favorite rewatch goes to the first 12 episodes of Temperature of Love (2017). The earlier episodes did so many good things for my feels. It was the right temperature (heeh) of swoony melodrama for me. On Jung-sun remains to be on the top of my male lead list.

I have a few shows I've re-watched. Feel good romance shows that I'll return to after watching a sad or intense show because I can squee over the cute scenes and anticipate the happy ending again! Or just because I enjoy watching them every time and that is comforting.

Here are my favorite go-tos:
*Coffee Prince
*Crash Landing On You (my first Kdrama!)
*Romance is a Bonus Book
*My Lovely Kim Sam Soon
*Because This Life Was My First (cute couple AND cute cat!)
*Secret Love Affair (the only one here that is definitely NOT light and fluffy but this one was so well done with gorgeous music and I usually pick up some nuance I missed before)
And I'll likely be adding
*Extraordinary Attorney Woo

My absolutely favorite rewatch dramas are three: Goblin, Romance is a Bonus Book and Witch at Court.

Honestly, I can rewatch all three over and over and not skip an episode
