Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Currently covering: Crazy Love, Tomorrow

My Liberation Notes: What a strong premiere. Granted, I was exactly in the mood for a story like this when I turned it on, but the drama immediately pulled me in for lots of reasons — really great writing and directing, a cast that felt like they were already inside their roles, an introspective vibe I love, and three siblings with struggles that were really easy for me to relate to. I like how even though our siblings have their struggles, they’re pretty good at voicing them (even if it’s just in their head). They know what’s wrong, but just not how to fix it. That in itself is a great backdrop for a story.

Our Blues: I can tell you are authentic and well-crafted, Show, but I’m not really getting emotionally invested in your story. Yet??

DaebakGrits

Currently covering: Again My Life

Thirty-Nine: It’s been a busy week for me, so instead of picking up one of the new/currently airing series, I chose to watch a few episodes of Thirty-Nine when I had down time. I knew just enough about the plot to suspect that I wouldn’t get so sucked in that I ignored all the other stuff I should be doing. It’s not exactly a story that has me racing to watch the ending, you know? But I’m surprised with how much I love these characters. I think I just enjoy watching shows about adult friendships and people finding romance in their late thirties/early forties. Not nearly enough of that on television, in my opinion.

solstices

Currently covering: Grid

Transit Love: I started watching this with my boyfriend out of pure curiosity, and it’s surprisingly entertaining! I’m not usually the type that enjoys reality shows, and this is the first dating one I’ve watched, but I found myself laughing way more than I expected to. The premise is interesting — four pairs of exes have to live under the same roof and either rekindle their old flame or meet someone new — and the cast members are all really likable (Bo-hyun and Min-young are so endearing). I can’t decide if I want to root for the exes to get back together, or if I want to get excited over potential new love lines. I just want all of them to be happy!

COMPLETED
Soundtrack #1 - Commented on the recap already.

STARTED
Again My Life - First 30 minutes were pretty boring but it got much more fun once he fell off the roof. First 2 episodes were mostly introduction to a whole host of characters so I'm looking forward to this week for the story to start moving. Maybe we'll finally be done with all the voiceover exposition.

My Liberation Notes - Probably my favourite of the weekenders. The stifling frustration of that life was so palatable that I'm already deeply invested in the well-being of the siblings, especially Mi-jung's. But I AM still reeling from the second-hand embarrassment I felt watching the barbecue restaurant scene 🙈.

Our Blues - It's fine but I'm finding it hard to connect to the characters - everyone seems to be drawn to an archetype. LJE and CSW were great though esp. CSW in a role very far removed from his usual image. Also it's SO good to see Kim Woo-bin on screen again 🥰.

ONGOING
Tomorrow (Ep 3-5) - I like the way the show is edited. The transitions between stories and timelines may seem jarring but everything ties back in later. Like the pink eye-shadow! In Ep 5, did anybody else think the young boy in Ryeon's memory is younger Lee Soo-hyuk? Maybe they are the ones whose destined bond/red thread was broken by her suicide?

Crazy Love - This week was mostly sweetness and light as a foil to all the corporate scheming to come next week I guess. The kiss was 💯.

Grid - Too many inconsistencies in terms of who knows what in the changed timeline. Looking forward to (hopefully) the end.

CHINESE
Planning to try out My Sassy Princess and Chinese Special Forces.

Tomorrow - I definitely think the young boy in Ryeon's memory is Lee Soo-hyuk's character.

I think the boy/Ryeon's Joseon groom is Joon-woong ever since the Jade Emperor's cryptic words "One day, the person you must save will appear" right before he joined the Risk Management Team.

Thanks for sharing that, I was so bored I turned the drama off 26 minutes in. Maybe I'll give it another go.

Soundtrack #1 (Series review) - Overall mood: D+
With Park Hyung Sik and only 4 episodes, this show was a no-brainer to pick up for watching. I didn’t expect a masterpiece in writing given the unrequited love motif and was still disappointed when Woo Il confessed and the forced separation occurred. And of course the finale had some random new girl? But I guess it’s nice seeing that HEA ending?

My Liberation Notes (Episode 1-2) - Mood: B+
Great premiere! In my opinion, one tell of good writing is when supporting characters don’t feel like fillers and side arcs are as interesting as the main ones (the ideal difference in characterisation and narratives is in breath, not depth!). I’m already very much invested in finding out what the no club trio will be doing as shown in the preview, maybe even more than Mr. Gu’s response to Mi Jeong. The only things I could really nitpick about are the two-timing that Chang Hee’s ex presumably did or Mi Jeong’s ex running away with her money: former wasn’t needed latter is potentially overdramatic.

Tomorrow (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D+
Seriously, multiple Truck of Dooms in concurrent procedurals? That’s not the only issue: the show’s playing off the time travel as a casual loop but that doesn’t make sense with the family photo not to mention Jun Woong meeting himself in the past? As for Joong Gil, he’ll most likely get a backstory by virtue of being a lead but I’ve no reason to be interested.

Green Mothers’ Club (Episode 3-4) - Mood: D+
If only the show had been about the unlikely friendship blooming between a tiger mom like Chun Hui and a chillax mom like Eun Pyo! Instead, we got more makjang about how there’s illicit relationships between the five families (yes, all 5 of them) and how Dong Seok’s hidden genius might lead Eun Pyo down dangerous affairs. Please be a fakeout, I beg you.

Grid (Episode 9) - Mood: C-
The ancestor reveal was clearly foreshadowed previously: it would’ve been a bigger twist if it hadn’t been, just like Sae Ha’s father. Man Ok’s escape has to be a bait, right? There’s no way he would’ve escaped from the building otherwise?

A Superior Day (Episode 5) - Mood: D-
Of course Shi Woo has childhood trauma: how could one be a psychopath in a show without that? And what’s the point of the prison guard character if he simply was murdered like that without even having talked to anyone else in the plot?

Crazy Love (Episode 11-12) - Mood: D
Okay, despite the stupidity that was Go Jin blocking Sina from becoming an instructor, I actually laughed when Ok Hee misunderstood from the diary round 2. But Se Gi’s backstory is underdeveloped and that cliffhanger is just super weak.

The bomb dude added a red blinking gadget into the pocket of the guy and then 80% of the army men left the place. It was clearly a bait.

Solar Jump - DNA itself is a tool to deceive the audience that young child's story was - The thing is the show is claimed as Sci Fi but time jump merely is a plot point and nothing more. This is well made office drama as most action happens in the files and on computer screen. Its the perfect table debate drama to reach out the answers.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate 🐣🐰🌱 and a good weekend to all!
I have been travelling and visiting my family, thus not much time for dramas.

I did check the new weekender, It's Beautiful Now, and so far it looks like a nice watch, with nice people and nice relationships. I hope it keeps the positive vibes and be a sibling to Be My Dream Family.

Crazy Love (only ep.11) - I liked the green suit 🙂 ...and the kiss was... aaaaah 🥰 (me melting 😊 )

CRICKET - root

JAPAN -

Murai's Love - 6/10 - as usual manga to tv drama. This style of manga not are good as a tv drama and i often say things against them but this time around this drama is somehow working. reason its atmost 20minutes - 3 minutes less. Direction is is able to bring aloud the comedy of the show. Takahashi Hikaru is doing good job as a otaku teacher. nothing new but good time pass.

10 counts to the future - 6/10 - yeah - takuya and typical school encouragement show.

Namba MG5 - shotaro in a new show - ok for the 1st episode.

Haruka's new show - she only do action now so i'm not in.

My Family - Tabe with ninomiya where he's getting all the screentime. as expected.

Korea -

It's Beautiful Now - 6/10 - Its just the beginning. can't say much.

Live once more - 6.5/10 - The old guy is alive - the best part this week. I really thought he has retired but nope he's doing a cameo here. Big big boost. Story is nothing new, nothing special, nothing innovative or unique. Very bland story and characters. But, presentation is good. Hero literally is Chick magnet - naah he's attracting both genders equally with his silly plot tools. This kind of heros have this particular style but it looks too over the top for others whereas its fitting well with this hero. That's the charm of this show. The issues are real and serious but presentation is quite +ve. Comedy is forced.
Villain team is much much more authentic and real.

Overall quite good time pass for now.

Middle Class Notes - 6/10 - Jtbc so have atleast some quality. I often say that kdramas don't talk the language of common man and it appeared that writer wants to do that but alas, writer is going with same rants of relationships. So whole hero team has no time for themselves as they live outside main city aka the semi-countryside residents. 2 episodes and all the did was cry over having no romantic relationships. woah better write those rants on social media or spend time on tiktok than being whinny brats. Seriously, that's the matter of the show. I don't think kdrama writers have it in them to even think what it means to be an individual. World is large and so are human desires. Countryside can have way different mentality to see things as well as way more free personality to contain in he chaff of few silly relationships.

WASTED POTENTIAL this show is.

Happy Easter/Passover! 🐣🐇💐
I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been home battling a sinus infection all week and my sense of taste and smell have been affected along with everything else (No, I don’t have COVID!!), but the show I couldn’t wait to see this week was PACHINKO. And episode 6 did not disappoint.
The new episodes of OUR BLUES and MY LIBERATION NOTES aren’t available yet as of this writing, but I will be watching this weekend. I think both shows had strong openings.

Twenty-Five Twenty-One🤺(16/16): First Bean for 2022! This story has been quite the unexpected adventure. It all started by a random reminder to watch the first episode on a boring Saturday, when this story was not even on my radar in the first place, and it ended with anxious investment in the relationship of our two leads. The realism of the story and its ending is both heartbreaking and comforting, and the story will be well remembered, whether you agree with the ending or not. I personally had hoped for them to at least stay in touch as friends after all their history together, but at the same time I know from experience that this does not always work out.🤔

A Business Proposal🦤(12/12): Second Bean for 2022! This show delivered the cake, but forgot to add the cherries on top, which is the fatal flaw in romantic comedies. Less is more does not work for the viewers, we want to be shown every detail of everyone’s happy ending. I am however willing to read stuff between the lines, whether they are really there or not. Sung-Hoon for example, had difficulties to find balance between his romantic relationship with Young-Seo and his loyalty to Tae-Moo and grandfather. He took time off work and did not join Tae-Moo and grandfather in the United States, which seems like a step in the right direction towards a better balance. He looked happy to be spending more time with Young-Seo and he even has a new hobby to occupy himself with! Grandfather and Tae-Moo have no time to miss him when Ha-Ri has both of them wrapped around her finger and will make sure that grandfather gets to see plenty of both grandsons and their significant others.😊

F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers⭐(16/16): This one goes down as my gateway drama. The first Hana Yori Dango adaptation, the first Thai drama, and there probably will be more titles to add. The bar has been raised and I fear nothing will come close, no matter how excited I am to continue with other HYD adaptations or Thai dramas. I mean, none of them center around MJ and his KFC love story!😘

The original live action HANA YORI DANGO is now available on Viki or at least the first ten episodes are so far. Viki used the Korean/English title BOYS OVER FLOWERS for it but it is the original drama. You will find that it is a bit rougher than F4 Thailand, so that F4 really stands on its own as not a carbon copy adaptation. Japanese shows are often distinctly different from their Asian counterparts.

Right--The unsatisfying conclusion of the KFC love triangle, with MJ's crispy wingman, killed this drama for me. What--was MJ supposed to fall in love with the pale imitation, lactosoy?

OUR BLUES (Ep. 1-2) I had to watch because of the star-ladened ensemble cast. I like HJM, LJE and KWB in their past works. But the star of the slow first episode was the Jeju Island scenery.

We get a glimpse of some odd ball characters who will most likely have bitter reunions. I liked the main characters teenage versions better than the adult ones. The adults all have an axe to grind or terminal regrets so likability at this point is low. The biggest contrast: HJM’s flirty, hard working woman is in stark contrast to KWB’s stoic demeanor. This may be the one salvageable romance arc. But the early focus is on Eun Hee, who seems to be the character pivot point for the rest of the cast’s stories. She is the hard working glue that keeps her circle of friends together. I can tell there is a lot of baggage to be unloaded in this series.

Variety:
SEOUL CHECK-IN (Ep 1) Lee Hyo Ri is the evergreen Korean celebrity. Charisma. She is the first gen Hallyu star that other celebrities look up to because she truly is a rebellious, tomboy beauty who speaks her mind. On TV, she is witty, humorous and brutally honest which makes her an enduring person. In this new variety show, she goes to stay overnight at celebrity homes. She meets Park Nae Ra for the first time and you can tell the empathy in her advice on how to overcome public criticism and scandals.

SIXTH SENSE 3: I got another one right . . . that is 3 of 4 this season.

Anime:
FLCL ALTERNATIVE (2018): The second sequel to Fooly Cooly tackles a subject that some recent kdramas struggled with: the friendship between girlfriends and adulthood issues. Four teenage girlfriends share their lives in the bizarre FLCL universe. What makes this work is the sense of chemistry the main characters have through school and their shared experiences. Each interaction feels genuine as these teens’ distinct personalities. It shows off all their jobs, passions, and struggles, which make each character relatable. The show taps into teenage culture: they hang out at restaurants and malls, text each other, and visit each other’s houses to learn about each other, try new things and talk about dreams/romance/goals. The end shows a good lesson about friendship.

Again My Life
This drama reminds me of lawless lawyer, which coincidentally had the same leading man, Lee Joon-gi excels a action vehicles and this one seems to be no exception, the introduction was solid, lets hope it remains consistent till the end.

Military Prosecutor Doberman
The hit drama with no online fanbase continues to deliver week in and week out, thanks to two great leads, a badass villain and a compelling revenge story, I'm really hoping it doesn't fumble the landing.

Tommorow
Rowoon is soo pretty, that's all i have to say.

Crazy Love I don't really watch but follow the recap. And I really have issue when the ML is a jerk for most of the time and the FL still falls in love with him...

Military Prosecutor Doberman The treason by Ha-Joon felt weird... The duo + Bolt is nice to watch.

Wednesday-Thursday : why there are no interesting drama >_<

Tomorrow There were so many informations about the past!

Again My Life They should have taken a younger actor for the past scenes and swtiched between both according to the point of view, because I always forget that he's playing a young character. Why Kim Jae-Kyung is not the lead? I'm not interested by the character neither to catch the villain... He's the same usual rich villain..

Our Blues My interest is changing according to the characters.

My Liberation Notes I loved everything from the first 2 episodes. The locations, the actors, the story, the ambiance!

Soundtrack#1 With such a name, I was expecting a great OST. It wasn't the case. The story was already told in other dramas and this version brought nothing new, it was kinda boring.

Pachinko This drama suffers from the chronology they chose. If I like the comparison between the different areas (the world evolved so fast and how people had to adapt), for the characters we're missing their development. I think it's weird to "kill" a character in the present with her funeral and brought her in the past story in the next episode. I felt nothing for this old woman who died, I knew nothing about her...

Our Blues: This reminds me of a middle-aged version of Dear My Friends, which is good because that’s one of my favorite dramas. Noh Hee-kyung is one of my favorite writers because her characters are ordinary people with flaws, sometimes huge flaws, but she’s able to peel back layer after layer and reveal the humanity in each one. What Han-su’s doing is despicable but Cha Seung-won was really good at showing Han-su sickened with himself.

My Liberation Notes: This drama is very similar to My Ahjusshi without feeling like a retread. “Can’t they just leave introverted people alone?” is the most relatable quote ever uttered in a kdrama. I identify so much with Mi-jung. I’ve never asked anyone to worship me but maybe if I met someone that looked like Sohn Seuk-gu …

Green Mothers’ Club: I’m liking this drama more and more. None of the mothers are particularly likeable and the “green” in Green Mothers’ club obviously refers to green with envy, but I’m interested in all of the stories. I’m enjoying the budding friendship between Eun-pyo and Chun-hui even though I just know Chun-hui will use the info she’s learned about Eun-pyo to backstab her. I’m sorry that Eun-pyo’s son turned out to be a genius because the countryside school sounded much more relaxing. No students, especially elementary students, should be studying past midnight or having to learn material two grades ahead in order to be admitted to an academy.

Tomorrow: Kang Seung-yoon was quite good in his guest role. I am still bothered by the simplistic way the cases are concluded. I do enjoy the epilogues, especially the one with both Jun-woong and Joon-gil being tricked by the shaman.

Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce): Si Eun putting the Professor in his place was satisfying. Hye-ryung’s storyline is so freaking messed up. Either Song Won possesses her forever or Hye-ryung eventually “wakes up” to find herself remarried to her cheating ex husband and probably pregnant to boot, the way things are going. Hye-ryung might not be the nicest person, but she deserved the chance to find love again too, not to be the meat suit for the woman her husband fell in love and cheated with.

Avengers Social Club: I've seen 4 episodes so far — the budding friendship and support among our three women are so adorable and sweet! I love that the two rich ladies look up so much to Ra Miran as the feisty, warm, loving unnie. <3

It’s been a while, but here I am to tell you about what I am watching.

All dramas concentrated on the weekend, it’s kind of exhausting.

Grid. I always love a dystopian story, and I also love time travel, as a hard sci-fi fan I am, even if it gives me a headache, like Cap. Janeway always said. Only one episode to go and too many questions unanswered. I blindly trust writer-nim, so I hope I get our answers and not a second season.

Tomorrow. This drama feels a bit like Mystic Pop Up Bar, and I love it specially in the way our team relates to their cases. As that drama I just love the way the drama balances seriousness and comedy: Favorite Ryung-Gu fight made me Iaugh to bits; Seungyoonie singing made me cry. We got to see some hints of the past that links our Ryeon and Joong-Gil. Still not enough LSH.

Our blues. I didn’t like a single character on the premiere watch, still I loved the drama and the storytelling. I want to see more and I can’t say enough times how happy I am to see WooBin back in my screen. I confess it, I cried during his first scene.

My liberation notes. Wow. I was glued to my screen from minute one. Loved everything about it. Everything. I just don’t know where to start. All actors have my heart. Can’t wait to see more.

I gave it a try to Green Mother’s Club and Again my life but couldn’t finish episode one. Maybe I’m not just in the mood.

I am also watching Live up to your name as after Through the Darkness I needed much more Kim Nam Gil and Rainless love in a godless land and if I leave aside that trope about an ancient god falling for a little girl, I am loving the storytelling. Enjoying both dramas.

Also, slowly rewatching Forest of Secrets I’m on S1, slowing down because I’m approaching episode 14 and no matter how many times I’ve watched, it hurts every time 😭

The first episode was a bit over-the-top with some of the fighting scenes(similar in style to the start of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon). After episode1 the show seemed to become a more traditional drama/comedy.

If you go to my fan wall- I have put a youtube music video of one of the songs from it at the top. It just does not show the comedy side of the drama though.

KIm Nam Gil really should rethink whether he ought to be doing all of his stunts himself. I believe he broke a couple ribs and fractured both wrists during filming.

The dramas that stand out from the rest now are PACHINKO and MY LIBERATION NOTES. Not happy that Pachinko will be stretched out into several series, I hope they are able to keep retain the quality.

The family dinners in Liberation Notes are painful to watch, there is so much resentment at play. The parents clearly see their children partly as failures, because they still rely heavily on their hard working parents. The grim face of the father says it all. The kids would like to make a change, but just cannot afford it. The frustrations are all there in the long tirades and complaints of the brother and older sister. The youngest is suffering in silence, but now seems to have reached breaking point, refusing to remain a push-over. 'Worship me!' must be one of the best lines in any drama. I hope our silent hero will do exactly that.

I should really drop GREEN MOTHER'S CLUB, I just hate these mothers abusing their young children 'for the betterment of their future', watching it is not good for my mental health. By chance I came across this quote: A few thousand years ago, in 360 B.C., Plato advised against force-feeding of facts to students. "Elements of instruction...should be presented to the mind in childhood; not, however, under any notion of forcing education.
Thank goodness the only truly gifted child just ignores and rejects all attempts of force feeding and does his own thing even when punished for bad behaviour. At least he has now the support of his mother.

CRAZY LOVE has dropped some of its craziness for more cuteness and kisses. I am not complaining.

OUR BLUES had a good start and the actors are all as good as I hoped. I do regret not being able to understand Korean. I suspect that the Jeju accent is important, too ( I can hear that it sounds very different). I do wonder how good the actors are speaking the accent. I know how much Scottish people cringe when they hear an American (or even English) actor speaking 'Scots'.

AGAIN MY LIFE feels very cartoonish. Too many fight scenes and a little boring. I still cannot connect to TOMORROW either. The suicide topic is very sad and needs some lighter, humorous scenes, but this requires great sensitivity and care and I am not sure it is always done in a thoughtful way.

I'm still catching-up, so two dramas from 2019 and 2020 were on the schedule.

This week I had the absolute contrast program.

First I watched I WILL FIND YOU ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY (WHEN THE WEATHER IS FINE). I'm really glad I was in just the right mood to appreciate and enjoy this wonderful series.

After that, I watched HELL IS OTHER PEOPLE (STRANGERS FROM HELL), but only in stages, because otherwise the series would have haunted me until I fell asleep (in fact, Lee Dong-Wook's grin even gave me some unpleasant dreams once). Especially the first and the last episodes were particularly creepy.

Tomorrow: 6.0 Day 4: It's sad when the epilog is better than the show. And I don't like fried chicken that much. Day 5: WTF conveniently made-up "Reaper's Guarantee of Responsibility"? Script is not strong enough to carry the weight of the concept.

Again My Life: Days 2 & 3 gave us 2 good signs - he can change what happened and the show can be better than day 1 was.

My Liberation Notes: __ Not rated. Seemed good, but didn't interest me enough to finish day 1.

Crazy Love: 7.0 All those top instructors at Gotop, but they didn't have an instructor to teach them not to write a diary and leave it lying around, or to make it complete if you must write one?

Military Prosecutor Doberman: 7.1 Day 12's ending -- D.P.? Is that you?

Grid: 7.0 I need to live-watch to participate in DB discussions. I also I need to watch each new ep with past details fresh in my memory to understand what's going on. But without time travel... I*think* the writer has a plan to bring things together and the score might go way up for the final week.

Pachinko: 7.5 Serious. Informative. Depressing this week, not "fun". How should I rate that?

Semantic Error: Such an easy, breezy watch with a lovely progression of the 'enemies to lovers' trope. I smashed out all eight of the 30min episodes in one sitting and was smiling all the way through as the boys' bonded and their relationship developed.

It's so nice to see more LGBT content coming through kdrama land and I have my fingers crossed that there will be more wlw stories to follow as well.

Tomorrow: I'm rather enjoying the procedural nature of this series but I'm hoping for a little more backstory and character exploration of our reapers in the coming episodes now that the world feels more established.

Crazy Love: This is my crack at the moment, the leads are just too funny together... However I could do without pretty much every other side character except perhaps the PI. I don't know what it is but everyone else is just really, really annoying - especially the best friend and brother.

My Liberation Notes: Two episodes in and I'm already hooked! Tomorrow's episode 3 cannot come fast enough :)

I agree that it would be lovely to see more LGBT content of all kinds in Kdrama land (and Asian drama land in general), although it's promising that the number of shows is increasing. Now it would be nice to see more mainstream, full-length releases - super short shows can be cute and fun, but I'd love to see more room for plot and character development.

The writer of OUR BLUES is famous for giving us characters that we do not necessarily like. That is still the case here and yet this show is very watchable.

KING OF TEARS is entering its final episodes. It has been very good- one of the best written sageuks that I or my wife have ever seen.

My wife loved the Chinese Costume Drama GENERAL AND I- all sixty-two episodes of it. But after that she is taking a break and catching up on the later seasons of the Canadian drama HEARTLAND. As she puts it “It has horses”. Enough said. She is also watching AGAIN MY LIFE and finds it very good.

The new weekender IT'S BEAUTIFUL NOW has started well. My favorite characters are actually the three future sisters-in-law. The men will need to redeem themselves. It may not sound like it but this is actually a good set-up for a fifty episode family drama because there is both time and a need for growth in our characters. I can say that this is promising.

I am also enjoying the classic weekender MY HUSBAND GOT A FAMILY. It is very well done.

Required fields are marked *

I do not dislike any of the sons as such- and do like the middle (lawyer) son the most of the three. I also like his female lawyer senior- who has already fallen for the oldest son (the dentist). She is delightful- as is her accurate description of Oldest Brother as 'a Dolt' which I find spot on- at least in the romance department. You can just see her thinking "How could I have possibly fallen for this guy who has zero romantic inclinations- but somehow I have". Of course, his obvious dedication to his work and the welfare of his patients plus the fact that he is the total opposite of a player strongly suggests that maybe her heart is wiser than she thinks.

Both of the older brothers have strong positives in their favor- to me it is only the youngest brother where I am still underwhelmed. But, that said, I find our three young women more appealing as characters at this point. All three of the men need real growth. No doubt all the women do too but it is not as obvious yet. In a sense the oldest of the women- the lawyer colleague of our middle brother- has already shown growth by accepting that the man she has fallen in love with is a very imperfect human being: She has already cleared a very major hurdle in her future marriage.

Are there any good light hearted cdramas airing right now? After BP and 2521, I'm only left with My Liberation notes and Our Blues. Both are great in their own right but I could really balance that out with something light and cute. Then there's Grid that I watch weekly only to end it and Pachinko to catch up, so I only have these serious dramas to lool forward to. Thanks to Sixth Sense 3, that's the only variety humoring me for now and taking the burden of the week off.

25- 21: finally watched the last two episodes and I am so so happy with that realistic ending. This drama is definitely up there in my list of favorite drama and will absolutely rewatch it someday. Great writing and acting, poignant stories of friendship, love and grit. Best one of the year so far for me!

Temperature of love: I was excited to be rewatching that, and I now remember when and why I had dropped it the first time when it aired. I just got to that part 😏. I am trying to push it through and finish it though. It's such a shame when the story at first was going to be so pleasant, with such chemistry from both leads.

Feeling sort of adrift after FLAW, ABP, and 2521.

Tomorrow (up to ep 5): I like how they've shown more considerations for those with suicidal ideation as we go on, and I like how it's one of those dramas that really let guest stars shine every week. The drama is as slow grower.

Our Blues (up to ep 2 midpoint): The first episode flew by like nothing. The second episode - I dread having Han-soo possibly play and swindle the awesome Eun-hee. I will wait for more episodes to pick it up back. The "you liked it too" scene was totally squealworthy.

The Lady in Butcher's House (up to ep 15): C-drama. An easy watch with one of my fave types of couples - the rough lady and the physically weak, scholarly man. Been watching this while making and eating dinner and doing chores. Doesn't require much attention span and you're not missing anything if you take your eyes off it for a few minutes.

Crazy Love: paused for this week. I may save and binge the episodes with all the non-lead scenes fastforwarded. It not being on Disney Plus USA or viki or netflix makes me not as inclined to seek it out.

My Liberation Notes: I really like this so far. I know the "worship me" got the most attention, but I am more interested in what the introverts at work are going to band together and do.

Our Blues: Your daughter doesn't need one year of golf coaching, she has the yips....she needs a sports psychologist. Better yet, stop putting the entire financial future of your family on the back of this gal because that is surely what the issue is. I couldn't get past the first episode because of this but I will wait and see what people say as the drama continues.

Again My Life: This is the first drama of LJG that I haven't jumped into immediately since Criminal Minds. I just think it looks so much like Lawless Lawyer that I'm surprised he took it. Flower of Evil was quite good and he was outstanding in it. I'll just let y'all check it out and see if it is worth it.

Tomorrow: I agree with the person who said it has Mystic PopUp Bar vibes. I like it and I actually like the serial way it is going about things.

I had the same thought about the golfing daughter- and with it the thought that it is obvious that a case of the yips has been established as the problem for years already. I have to conclude that her parents are just uniquely stupid. I think our writer let us down with that one. A good Sports Psychologist would not be cheap but would obviously cost way less than what they have been doing.

Most Korean golfers have sponsors who invest in their career while paying for training, transportation, fees, etc. in exchange for a large percentage of earnings. Sponsors pick potential teens who can earn back expenses by their late teens. Most Pro golfers who make a tour usually have short career on 10 years or less. Clearly, the daughter did not have enough talent to have an investor. Her father’s bias and lack of recognition will bankrupt his family.

3

Required fields are marked *

Sponsors are standard for U.S. players as well, on all the "minor league" tours and even for some players who have first made the jump to the PGA and LPGA. Most of them are friends of the family or businessmen the golfer has encountered. The most promising young golfers of course, have agents, who can recruit sponsors in addition to endorsement contracts.

In the show, I thought it was ominous that the wife was "getting too close" to sponsors, implying that she was selling herself for potential support--and why was she beat up in that one scene? That was unclear to me.

In my evaluation of the realism of sports portrayals in dramas, I thought the idea that the parents had sold everything to support their daughter relatively realistic--at least as realistic as the idea that fencing would continuously cause enormous mass media controversy, for example! It is true, though, that unless they had family in the states, there is no way they would sustain years of attempts as I think was described in the show. There just aren't that many women's golf tournaments outside of the LPGA.

Enjoying Liberation unabashedly while hoping Our Blues does not possess a prophetic title.
Tomorrow has lost its comedic undertone and I agree with a previous post that the epilogues are better than the main plot.
At first I thought Again My Life was a parody, but they are playing it for reals. Will give it two more eps.
Have been toggling between Black Dog and Abbott Elem for my edu-drama fix. Abbott is so funny it hurts.
Looking for Kim Sejeong's earlier work and hit play on I Wanna Hear Your Song - which I wouldn't recommend. After 2 eps I skipped to the end to witness what has to be the WORST overseas time-skip ever. I'da punched him; seriously roundhouse, not playful.
Dabbled in B.U.S.T.E.D (too silly) but am fascinated by Old Enough the toddlers-on-a-mission Japanese show. I've opined that we in the West baby our children too much but this is perhaps too far in the other direction?

I have Everything Everywhere on my list, as well- the reviews have all been total raves. But I haven't been to a movie theater in 3 years, and the last movie I saw, just to kill time, was an Avengers movie--I can't even remember whether it was the one titled "endgame" or "new beginnings" or "midlife crisis." It would have been a popcorn movie had the Dolby Atmos soundtrack not been set to "thump the eardrums" mode, which shook the popcorn onto the floor. I'm a little worried with Everything Everywhere's fantasy element--even though its supposed to be funny and thought-provoking--that in the theater it will be a similar threat to hearing health.

OUR BLUES: I like this. It's very pretty to look at, and although the appearance of so many A-listers playing everyperson roles was initially more distracting than I anticipated, I'm now fully sucked in. I like that right now it's centering on older characters and just hinting at the other stories that will unfold. There are many interesting connections and emotional beats to play out so I'm curious to see where everything goes. And as others have said, it's so, so nice to see KWB again--he has such an interesting face and I love that his character is so far the embodiment of the sexy "still waters run deep" type.

MILITARY PROSECUTOR: As someone else said, this is a well-rated show that no one seems to be talking about. I like how confident and assured the writing is. Even with some stumbles along the way, the ML's development is well done, the slowburn romance is lovely, and the site of corrupt people in power getting their due never really gets old.

CRAZY LOVE: Surprisingly charming and fun, this one is an easy watch as long as you don't think too hard about the central mystery of who's trying to kill Go-jin. Also, I'm not sure I buy his fangirl level of fame as a a lead teacher of a study center--is that a thing?--but I still really enjoy this show.

TOMORROW: I'm finding this to be a letdown. Like others have said, it does have strong "Mystic Pop-Up Bar" vibes but without much of the overt goofiness. Although I didn't love that one as much as others seemed to, "Tomorrow" is definitely the lesser show. The scripts just aren't very good, despite some interesting visual moments and actors who are giving it their all.

Also started the British show "Anatomy of a Scandal" which is somehow both predictable and surprising at the same time. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as stellar television, but if you like twisty political/courtroom thrillers that center on a marriage you might want to give this one a try.

Mystic Pop-up Bar : LOVE this show! Is there any other similar show that has good writing and storyline?

Rewatching Uncanny Counter : It's THE kdrama that pulled me into the kdrama world!!

Military Prosecutor : I love everything except, I had to fast forward the part where Woo In & Do Bae Man get a bit romantic; it felt out of place. Somehow I'm becoming more sympathy with No Tae Nam.., but his crime in previous episodes were intolerable, but his backstory is kinda sad... So much mixed feeling. I also sensed there might be another untold story regarding why No Hwa Young killed Do Bae Man's parents & Woo In abuji.

Business Proposal : While I love the first 10 episodes, I'm dragging myself trying to watch episode 11, it's so boring. To the point that I give up and decided to read the spoilers instead. I love Daebakgrits Fixed the Ending post regarding this show!

Hey! I've been going through some completed shows lately to try and stave off my continuing drama drought... I also picked up one new drama which has been great so far!

Tell Me What You Saw: After getting some recommendations from other beanies (I wish I had your handles aaaah I don't even remember which post we were in) I gave this drama a second shot. Glad I did! It was a fun watch, although I can't say it was anything super new. I definitely got more invested once team leader Hwang's backstory was explained. Then things got much more intense.

Lovely, Horribly: I thought this was a movie at first. Then I realized it was a drama and got excited. Then I watched the first episode and got just invested enough to want a happy ending. Then I "accidentally" clicked on ep 31 and lost all interest because she wasn't with who I thought the male lead would be.

Prosecutor Doberman: I dropped this. Too bad, but the characters just felt a bit stale.

Children of a Lesser God: This is exactly my style of drama so far. I've wached the first two episodes and am excited for more.

Again My Life I personally loved everything about the first two episodes. I watched the third without subs and was fine until they started spouting legal terms and stuff about real estate beyond the word "bankruptcy". I did learn some cool new terms though, so that was fun! I'm enjoying this drama so far 8.5/10.

Yeah, it is definitely an Asian thing, although it doesn't apply quite so much to larger cities like Seoul (or Shanghai, Tokyo, Beijing, etc.)

It's one of those cultural expectations that can be toxic, as you can see in the show. I've heard so many complaints from people who feel suffocated living with their parents and can't get their parents' noses out of their business. The younger generation is pushing back against this now and if they have the economic ability, they'll get their own place, even if their parents reside in the same city.

also common among east-asian american families, unless the kids end up working too far to reasonably commute between work and the parents' house or if the parents are in govt-subsidized housing and the kids' incomes can tip them above the threshold. If the kids end up buying property, they just rent them out until they get married or are in a serious enough relationship for cohabitation and then move in for marriage.

Multi-generational households are also becoming more common in white families too after the Great Recession
and COVID. And the cost of caregiving has gone up, so it makes more sense

This is actually common across many cultures. I once came across a comment section that highlighted that moving out at 18 or when you've just started working is rarer than staying with your parents. Maybe it's more specific to the West and not even all of that. Where I belong from, people only leave their homes as ar said, if their job is faraway from the place their parents live or if they end up getting married. I personally don't think there's any shame attached to it. For many it is personal prefernce plus, living with your parents allows you to save more till the time you actually want to move out. Sure it's good to be independent but I think the shame attached to living with your parents is also specific to certain cultures.

This is true. Our son came back and lived with us for a while and we were happy to have him- and to have him saving the majority of his salary. Now he is once again on the other side of the country but the fact that he had savings made that move much easier.

” it is considered "shameful" for a single woman to live in an apartment” has not been common sense in East Asian countries anymore. Just because of the financial issue. Renting an apartment including the deposit, agency commission, etc. in those big cities costs lots of money, and worse their salaries are not going up. Many people, young and old, are saving and preparing for retirement now.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I understand this. I loved the freedom living alone in a western country gave me. When I came back and had to live with my parents, I was very desperate and suffocated. But then in some Asian cities like here, it isn’t also that safe for a woman to live alone unless she lives in a luxurious place with great security and neighborhood and a place would cost her a fortune the amount of which no young single woman can probably purchase before she turns 40(?). Also, filial duty is a moral concept that is regarded very highly here, so if you are an unmarried woman, it’s more “normal” and “appropriate” for you to live with your parents: you can care for them the same way they did for you when you were young. Yes, it’s more suffocating and stressful than living alone, but it’s also a better choice in some locations (here included).

My Liberation Notes
This kind of drama is something that doesn’t go in between. Either you love it or hate it. My sister doesn’t like it. She doesn’t like My Ahjussi, Our Beloved Summer and Chocolate. But those 3 are the ones I treasure so much.
People get excited over some romantic lines or scenes, but my heart is squeezed for a scene when Park Donghoon asked for Lee Jian when he didn’t see her at the restaurant they frequented. I never forget that one.

There’s nothing I love among current airing shows.

Pachinko - I do like this a lot but we get one measly episode per week. I care more about the 1930s scene but 1989 is also well presented.

Liberation Notes- hmm unlike DB (once again ha ha), I’m on the fence. This is coming from someone who loved My Ahjussi and consider it one of the greatest.

- in the premier of My Ahjussi, there was already an interesting plot thread ( the money) that kept me glued when I was just getting to know the characters. In Liberation, I’m watching the characters be introspective but honestly I don’t care for them as much yet. I wish the pacing was faster.
- the soundtrack in My Ahjussi was outstanding. So even if I’m just listening to the soundtrack while the characters think, my heart would soar. Not the case here. Soundtrack is ok, not as brilliant

Net not sure yet.

- Our Blues - is this a case of bait and switch? The PR gave the impression the leads would be Lee Byung Hun, SMA, Kim Woo Bin. Instead it’s all about Cha Seung Won and Lee Jung Eun. They are great actors and so far their storyline is interesting so I do enjoy the scenes. The writing is well done. On a purely personal preference note, I dislike the music. I’m not fond of accordion comedic sounds. I recall Dear My Friends also employed similar sounds and I almost dropped it.

- Again My Life - I find the writing too simplistic. I love Lee Joong Gi and can he act! But too much makeup filter is distracting me.

- Its Beautiful Now - out of desperation I even watched this weekend drama, though weekenders not my favorite. And again found it simplistic. I do love the mom but I’m not warming up to Yoon Shi Yoon. The FL is better but I’m not sympathetic to her plight.

Tomorrow- dropped. Goofy Rowoon? No, thank you. Too bad, Lee Soo Hyuk is mesmerizing bit too little scenes

Our Blues is using an omnibus format. Each character will be the lead of their own story, Cha Seung-won and Lee Jung-eun just had the first arc.

I'm loving My Liberation Notes but I understand what you're saying. For these 4 episodes it has been much more about the characters than the plot but like My Ajusshi, Mr Gu is bringing the mystery. Also about the music, Kim Won Suk PD works with the same music directors most of the time and I love their music in Misaeng, signal and My Ajusshi. They make perfect music for darker shows and I can feel the lack thereof in MLN.

Our Blues - Oh I see, thanks both.

Liberation Notes - I’ll continue to linger. It has potential.

My Liberation Notes is the show I look forward to every week, now that A Business Proposal has ended. I love it so much. And I can relate to the Mi-Jung, in that I'm introverted and not always good at being relaxed among others, especially when we do not have a close relationship. And that feeling of being stuck and not knowing how to change it? Relatable. Then of course you've got Son Seok-gu, Lee El, and Lee Minki who all beautifully portray the struggles of their respective characters. The show is just *chef's kiss*. Waiting for episode 4.

F4 Thailand: Having finished the revenge arc, I just gotta say I loved Talay as a villain. He had brains, he had motive, he got execution. And so hot! Be still, my heart. I always did love a good villain.

Our Beloved Summer: This show is like slow-watch tv. Tranquil and soothing. I had the same feeling watching I'll See You When the Weather is Fine or A Piece of your mind.

Itaewon Class: I realize went through the first two episodes thinking the second FL was the first FL so now I don't dislike her that much. But she should really not have bangs, this hairstyle diminishes her face. The FL has her issues too, but she's very upfront about it so I'm not as bothered by it. It's a ok watch overall so far (ep7).

Feeling the loss of Lee Seung-gi's presence since having finished Hwayugi, I decided to watch Vagabond the other day. Only two episodes in this is bound to be something of a mess but like any Michael Bay movie, it looks an entertaining one. Also, the hero seems slightly indestructible.

Had the same feeling watching Our Beloved Summer. It is very pretty and soothing. One of the best dramas for me, especially because the leads are such great actors and have a great chemistry. Kim Dami in Itaewon Class gives off a totally different vibe, but I loved her in that role too. Shame that IC feels like two dramas squished together - I enjoyed a lot the first part, but felt like it lost momentum after the time jump. Let us know how you feel about it when you finish!

I am almost done re-watching Someday or One Day and, I still absolutely love it. I forgot how amazing Ko Chia Yen (the actress who plays Huang Yuxuan/ Chen Yunru). I can't imagine how difficult it must be to play a character pretending to be another character so flawlessly.

I'm glad that I stumbled upon the webdrama Hope or Dope on Viki. It's like a "lighter" Extracurricular. I have only seen the first 3 episodes but I am looking forward to seeing what will happen now that our leads worlds are starting to collide.

I started Again My Life. It looks like a typical Lee Joongi action drama, but that's exactly what I am in the mood for.

I am still watching Tracer and I am enjoying every scene Go Ahsung and Im Shiwan share together.

I am looking forward to the new Netflix series Heartstopper since I just finished reading the graphic novels and I am in the mood for something cute.

I am not in the right mood for Our Blues and My Liberation Notes nor can I find room in my schedule to watch them. Maybe in a couple of weeks, I'll try to check one of them out.

I sent a form to Disney+ requesting Korean titles (such as Grid) to be made available in my region. Maybe if a lot of people sent similar requests, they would finally be clued in to the fact that people outside of the Pacific region want to watch their Korean content. I can only hope...

Military Prosecutor Doberman - I'd be ok without anymore No Tae-Nam. Showing him as being pitiful comes off sour in my mouth after what he's done. And I remain confused on how he didn't know what was going on during lights out... after what he's done...

Tomorrow - "Is being dense your superpower?" Choi Jun-Woong unfortunately is coming off more exhausting than funny.

Spy x Family - cute and ridiculous. I haven't been finding a lot of things funny recently so I was really happy to confirm my sense of humour isn't on vacation.

The first episode was good, they seem to be following the manga pretty well. Hopefully the second part of the series isn't going to be too much later in the year.

Now that over the last couple of weeks Netflix released 25 21, A Business Proposal and Tomorrow in my region, I went from rags to riches 💅
Still feel out of synch with everybody else, because even with Tomorrow I'm getting the episodes a week behind, but at least I'm super enjoying these dramas.
ABP is adorably trope-y and quaint. You've got to love a drama that has a drama inside the drama. And Tomorrow is surprisingly funny for its subject matter and gives me Mystic Popup Bar feels. Rowoon does really well big puppy energy, and Kim Heesoon instantly became my new crush (that makeup, wow - she looks even better than the webtoon character 🤯). And the goofy comic relief moments are tottaly up my lane - AGucciM, the broke ass car, the tiny shamman luring them in, ha! Still, I totally understand that this can be a very triggering drama for people who've been close to or suffered the loss of a loved one by suicide, so I'd recommend people to approach this drama with caution.
Also watching Pachinko and <b<Grid (very behind on that one) on The Site That Shall Not Be Named. Pachinko is doing the past timeline amazingly well - that conversation that grounds Sunja's relationship to Isak, her rapport with Kyunghee, so well done! Not sold on the 1989 timeline, though, but had the same feeling reading the book, so for me the issue is really about the source material. I simply find the past timeline characters and the events they go through more engaging. And drama is really delivering on historical reconstruction, very eye popping!

Apmost forgot Military Prosecutor Doberman! Yes, it's very twisty and enjoyable. I'm woth all the Beanies that pointed out that No Taenam did way too despicable things to deserve a redeeming arc

Used a long bus ride to watch Yaksha. It's gor a very Hong Kong 90s feel, I loved the neon crazy coloring. But what a waste of a great cast and lighting direction, tsk tsk (*shakes head)

Yes , yes way late. I am watching the third best American TV show ever: Better Call Saul. I am thinking about how this show could happen in SK.
This makes me love Kdrama even more. I live in NM and I understand every nuance. I'm thinking DP is the closest.
Anyone??
