The King’s Affection: Episodes 7-8 Open Thread

It’s a tense week for our characters, as the palace has some not-so-friendly visitors. I’d be scared for our prince, as she’s left to deal with the chaos, but she’s proven time and time again that she can handle herself. And, as she’s starting to realize, she has plenty of people who have her back.

EPISODES 7-8 WEECAP

I get so excited to tune in to this show, just to rejoin our characters and see how their relationships develop. I’m obviously smitten with our main couple, as well as the parties around them that make it all the more interesting. This time around, we’re given the usual dose of light cuteness, which perfectly balances out with the much darker side of things.

Jumping back in, Ji-woon is nearly punished for supposedly hiding his identity and background from the royal family. But Dam-yi comes in, like a total boss, with the evidence to clear his name. She gets him released, and he immediately retrieves his friends and makes sure that they’re safe and sound.

To Dam-yi’s surprise, Ji-woon wishes to remain at the palace as her tutor. He’s come to admire her (in more ways than one), and it’s sweet watching him follow her around like a puppy. At one point, he’s so bouncy and hyper that he trips and falls right into her arms. Reversals — gotta love ‘em. (Also, prayers for Ro-woon’s poor back.)

I have to admit, I also think So-eun and her little crush on Ji-woon is cute. But the best thing that comes out of their interactions is definitely Dam-yi’s jealousy. The jealousy hijinks are fun now, but I already know that they’re gonna hurt me later.

Speaking of which, things take a more serious turn when the Ming envoys arrive. Among the envoys are the minister that Ji-woon is on good terms with and the chief eunuch (cameo by Park Ki-woong). The chief eunuch is originally from Joseon, but he’s exceptionally rude and explosive towards the Joseon royals.

During the welcoming banquet, the chief eunuch feels offended by someone and nearly executes them right there. Dam-yi orders him to stop, and when it seems like he won’t, Ji-woon then steps in and de-escalates the situation. Later, Dam-yi tells Ji-woon not to involve himself like that again, concerned for his well-being.

Apparently, the chief eunuch isn’t done wreaking havoc. He notices Court Lady Kim making eye contact with Dam-yi and assumes she’s speaking in code. Enraged, the chief eunuch grabs Court Lady Kim and cuts off her hair. (For context, back then, cutting one’s hair was thought of as a punishment worse than death.)

With that, Dam-yi has had enough. She punches him to the ground and continues to pulverize him.

The chief eunuch, of course, has to retaliate, so he has his burly bodyguard attack Dam-yi’s bodyguard Ga-on. Dam-yi is nearly slashed by the bodyguard’s sword, but Ga-on covers her and takes the blow without hesitation. As Ga-on passes out and falls into a dream, we get a little more insight into who he might be.

Ga-on dreams of the real Prince Hwi’s former tutor, just as he was about to be executed. And in the crowd, crying, we see a young Ga-on. Now that I didn’t see coming. I should’ve known that the tutor’s death would come back into the story somehow.

I’m assuming that the tutor was Ga-on’s father and that Ga-on’s motivation for being in the palace is staying close to his father’s last link — Hwi/Dam-yi. It’s still unclear if he’s actually seeking revenge against Dam-yi, but if he is, he’s clearly wavering.

Meanwhile, Dam-yi is reprimanded by her father, who’d trusted her with welcoming the envoys. Dam-yi is deeply hurt by his disappointment, as she’d known he was sick and she’d wanted to step in and make him proud.

At this point, I just want someone to hug poor Dam-yi. Thankfully, Ji-woon is there to do just that and to reassure her that she’s doing her best (which Hyun witnesses from afar). Together, they team up with Hyun to take the chief eunuch down.

Along the way, Ji-woon gets caught up in two separate fights, getting injured on both occasions. Dam-yi, like clockwork, is always there to save him. I love this, as well their quiet moments afterwards, as she tends to his wounds. You can tell he feels incapable, when he so badly wants to protect her, but she’s just thankful he’s by her side.

Our badass team eventually gets the upper hand, with Ga-on getting a rematch with the chief eunuch’s bodyguard and Hyun uncovering a scandal the chief eunuch was involved in, which is sure to get him in trouble with the emperor. They also uncover something else — the chief eunuch’s tragic backstory.

The chief eunuch had been sold and shipped to China as a child, essentially abandoned by his own parents and home country. He’d been sold along with a young girl, who’d later become the emperor’s concubine. The chief eunuch and the girl were in love, but they had to keep it a secret within the palace.

This, Dam-yi tells the chief eunuch, is something she sadly relates to, on a very deep level. She now understands why he carries so much hatred in his heart, and she apologizes to him as the prince of Joseon. For the first time since he’s arrived, the chief eunuch actually softens.

The Ming envoys peacefully retreat, and a calm washes over the palace and our characters. More importantly, our couple has come out of this with a stronger bond. Much stronger than they expected.

After some celebratory drinks, Dam-yi wanders into her and Ji-woon’s former love nest and is stunned to find it completely restored and covered with fresh flowers. (This totally reminds me of the movie The Notebook, when the hero restored the old house they cherished. So, so heartwarming.)

Dam-yi finds Ji-woon there, drunk as a skunk, and lies that she just happened to stumble upon this place. As she admires the work he’s done, he can’t help but stare at her. He tries to shake it off, like he always does, but this time, the pull is too strong. Like a reflex, he leans in and kisses her on the cheek, surprising them both.

I was expecting him to go for a real kiss, but the fact that he had the urge to give her an innocent peck on the cheek is actually quite precious. Everything about this relationship is so innocent, which makes me all the more fearful for what lies ahead. Dam-yi is trying to hold her feelings back, as they’re a danger to both of them, but Ji-woon is making it really freaking hard. For her and for me.

@kiara do you have any insight about what the actual historical protocol would've been had a Chief Ming Eunuch acted like that in the Joseon Court?

.
Action: Among other things, my friend the bodyguard should Not have been riding a horse, let alone possibly doing anything, so soon after that wound.

Costume Design: Love Rowoon's purple hanbok, and the attention to hair and hat accessories.

Totally with you - all characters back to running, riding, fighting with mere hours to heal; in one case being able to stand independently after 30 minutes or so. Clearly Ji-woon has some seriously good medicine on offer... Wish it didn't distract me, but it does.

Well, the bodyguard should never have turned his back to the ONLY threat in the room… to do so and be taken by surprise? Tsk, tsk, tsk.

The slash to the back, etc, are truly nothing compared to the wounds suffered by the stabby OTP in My Country…

My pet peeve is when smart competent people suddenly turn into imbeciles for plot convenience. Oh well.

@sicarius. Young girl growing up in a gisaeng house becomes the grey eminence behind the Queen and spy master, etc. I thought that story would have been worthy of an epic by itself.

A time skip and our hero (the poor side of the stabby OTP) shows up with wealth and power. Well, gee, I think that the arc that connects a poor young man, son of an executed traitor, to wealth and power, would be worth showing.

I kept thinking that we’d get insight into those arcs during moments of introspection… but as far as I could tell none of the characters other than the Man with the Iron Fan had an inkling of an inner life.

I had similar issues with Mr. Sunshine - meeting the central characters, I was wondering a lot more about how they got there from their beginnings than the story going on.

1

@hebang the story of the gisaeng spy especially intrigues me even just from your summary.

Ah, what a shame overall.

I wonder if it actually ever goes through a writer's head when writing such a story - "ah the pre story to this story is more interesting, should I change the whole show?" - haha, probably not for KES but I'm sure the writing process for some others must be fascinating.

The Ming envoy was horrible but I appreciated the way Dam-yi dealt with him, softening his heart. But he will not be forgiven for hurting Ga-on or cutting Court Lady Kim's hair. I am so intrigued by Ga-on, I just don't know what to make of him. But the highlight of these episodes was Ga-on dragging out a drunk Ji-woon. I rewatched that scene at least a dozen times.

I already can't really get attached with this drama and now I truly want to forget Ming Gang episodes.
I know I've said this, but everytime Rowoon appears, I see Joowon 🙈

I know this is tropey but I like that it is done in reverse. He is the one tripping and falling into her arms, the one tending the flowers and flower garden, the one needed rescuing as she is the better swordsman/fighter. So that keeps the fun. However, I am more invested now on the back story of Ga-on.

Couldn't care less for the Constipated-looking Eunuch, & his cringey, Mandarin-speaking troop from Ming dressed in historically inaccurate clothing.... this week's highlight for me was definitely Ga-On, gosh how cute is he? No wonder he is the visuals in his k-pop group! ^^
Also, super-glad the Crown Prince finally could see where the bunch of flowers tutor Jung had been collecting, went! :P

I know sexuality wasn't as nuanced in Joseon, and people didn't live for labels back then; but I love how unperturbed Ji-Woon seems to be regarding the whole CP situation. Although, I KNOW 'k-drama logic' would still imply he fell for the CP because he resembled the court-maid (aka a WOMAN) and therefore tutor Jung is pretty 'straight', but that's far from the truth, atleast in my head. Ji-Woon is so un-bothered to have caught feelings for another man.... Rather, his worry is the CP is out of his league, lol! :P

He's soon becoming one of my favorite beta-heroes from drama-land! :D

Exactly how i feel about jiwoon's love for cp. That man be admiring the cp even when she is training with swords and when she saved him from getting whipped. I dont think it has any relation with jiwoon finding the resemblance of woman he saw in the woods and the cp. Otherwise, he would have imagined the cp as a woman while kissing her.

I'm watching this purely for a fluff watch and entertainment so despite the parts I laugh at because of the cringe or all the plot loopholes I'm willfully ignoring, I'm thoroughly enjoying this drama. Eps 7 and 8 definitely picked up the pace and PEB is just EXCELLENT. At this point her acting is so good that she's entirely the pretty and tiny yet mighty crown prince to me. I love how CP's personality has been fleshed out with such depth and growth. Jiwoon's character is getting clumsier and more pathetic than I expected lol but for some reason I'm enjoying it! It's refreshing to see a naive, starry-eyed ML hopelessly in love with a stoic FL holding back all the pain and secrets.
The Ming guy was irritating af to watch (btw did Ming EUNICHS really have THAT much power back then? To the point where he can act like THAT in front of the entire royal court of Joseon?? I know Joseon had to pay tribute to the Ming dynasty and had no choice but damn he was going too far). But I loved how CP handled him at the end and apologized to him on behalf of the country. That's honestly probably the only thing the eunuch ever wanted and I was really impressed and even touched during that scene.
Definitely intrigued by Gaon and am getting impatient to learn what's his deal and for him to actually start talking to people lol

I am trying and failing to recall the name of the show(s), but others have covered a eunuch from China (I'm not sure all of them were originally from Joseon) that did indeed wield a ridiculous amount of power, for similar reasons--they helped the emperor at the time attain the throne. In some cases, they are only spoken about/referred to--not a seen character--and if they are all the same one it might have to do with the time period the show covers, because I don't know how often the eunuch in this show acted as part of an embassy entourage.

I want to point out I said China because I'm not sure that all the shows with such a character were from the Ming empire time.

Also, per wiki, "During the early part of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD), China demanded eunuchs to be sent as tribute from Korea. Some of them oversaw the Korean concubines in the harem of the Chinese Emperor." Also, "Certain eunuchs, such as the Ming dynasty official Zheng He, gained immense power that occasionally superseded that of even the Grand Secretaries."

I've definitely seen c-dramas with powerful eunuchs (reflecting history) who even had their own private armed forces. The Imperial Coroner was one such show.

I think the disconnect for me was with the unpalatable amount of violence - probably because the eunuchs depicted in c-dramas tend to act more like political schemers and rarely personally use violence.

I am really enjoying the role reversal over here. FL saving ML is refreshing in a kdrama. But tbh i dont think Jiwoon is weak or isnt skilled to use a sword. I actually found the fight scenes in episode 8 pretty realistic. No one, no matter how much skilled they are in fighting skills, would singlehandedly be able to fight 7 to 8 people at once without getting injured or most probably killed.
Also i absolutely loved how he openly told how much the wounds hurt and didnt shy away or remained cold about it which a typical ML in a drama would rather do.

That is the more normal one but we all know kdrama logic is on vacation...The same with wounds...
Also,he clearly knows how to use one but he does use it only when it is really necessary as he hates it...Also,7-8 more likely men who fight/kill on daily basis against one guy who uses from time to time a sword would be unrealistic for him to be a Lee Bang Ji LOL

I love the Cp character. From the outside she is cold and uncaring and harsh. (very necessary to keep her secret) But she deeply cares for and tries to protect those who are important to her/considers her people. We see this in the way she does her court lady's hair for her to try to make her feel better, and even the way she placed herself between her bodyguard Ga-on and the eunuchs bodyguard. She doesn't hesitate to defend those weaker than herself.
Like others, i initially thought Ga-on is there to watch/kill her at some point, but i think he is now going to be loyal to her. He noticed how she protected him, and i think that surprised him enough to reevaluate his misssion. Overall another great two episodes.

This drama mixes very well the sageuk part and the manhwa part. It makes it very pleasant to watch with not too much politics with old men and not too much fluffly scenes.

I like Ji-Woon character. Because of his father, he ran away from politics and the palace, it made him caring for people and being free from the heaviness of the hierarchy. He's just a bubble of happiness in this palace. But he can still be serious, he didn't hesitate to sacrifice himself for his friends. He can fight but not defeat everybody when he is clearly disadvantaged by the number of his opponents. He makes him not being the perfect ML, it's nice :p

Lee Hwi was passive but Ji-Woon changed her and now she's active as a Crown Prince. She protected him and his friends. Knowing the situation of her father, she wants to help him too. She's not her grandfather's puppet anymore. PEB is great in this role!

I wonder if Ga-On knows about her identity because if he's the son of the Tutor and saw the Prince as Dam-Yi in the past, he could make the connection.

Hyun is in the front row to see Dam-Yi falling in love with Ji-Woon. He saw her changing, smiling to somebody else.

The scene of Court Lady Kim was so sad to watch! Even if CHief Eunuch suffered in the past, he did what people did to him, he's not better.

I'm happy to see our main characters in their past lair. I'm expecting more scenes there :D

Lots of Ga-on in this episode = a very happy me ^_^

I've seen comments saying it was disappointing how the "best swordsman in Joseon" got thrown around like a ragdoll by the Ming bodyguard, but I'm actually pretty impressed by how Ga-on still managed to (somewhat) hold his own despite being 1) unarmed 2) taken by surprise 3) up against a guy who's practically twice his size and has a giant machete. Props to Byungchan for filming those action scenes, it must have been exhausting and I hope it didn't aggravate his old neck injury :( Also, in the making video, it was really heartwarming to see Park Ki-woong giving Byungchan action tips! (Talking about Park Ki-woong, it's nice to see him in a historical drama again, especially since I was introduced to him through Gaksital.)

Hwi putting herself in between Ga-on and the Ming bodyguard was so cool, omg. And Ga-on taking the slash for her without any hesitation whatsoever! T__T I really hope we get to learn more about him soon — this boy is breaking my heart with his silent stoicism even after his nightmare :-( Like! Why is your first reaction after waking up from a near-fatal injury! To apologise to Hwi! When you literally saved her from death! (Okay, I know why, but still. Is it too obvious who my favourite character is? :p ) It's clear he was affected by her apology and her concern for him, so I really hope we get to see more scenes of them interacting, especially since the execution of Royal Tutor Kang changed both their lives irrevocably.

Of course, I can't leave out the sheer delight that was the undercover plan by our main trio! It was a nice bit of humour amidst the high stakes. And how cool was Ga-on in the forest fight! That ten-second all-kill and that satisfying takedown of the Ming bodyguard, omg. I really loved that fight choreography, and how Ga-on used his smaller stature to his advantage. Though I was also like, sir?? Were you not gravely injured two days ago?? How are you even riding on a horse, much less swordfighting... Well, I suppose I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for the pretty bodyguard, heh. 💙💛

Anyway, enough about Ga-on — I really do love the other characters too! Hyun's veiled threats hidden behind a (dimpled!) smile continue this episode, and I'm really enjoying it. It's so satisfying to see that the nice guy has claws too! (Though again, I might be a little biased since I've liked Nam Yoon-su since his webdrama days, heh.)

Moving on to the main couple, I'm loving all the role reversals, as well as how expressive Ji-woon is. I keep alternating between swooning over how cool Hwi is, and wanting to pat Ji-woon on the head like a giant overgrown puppy, haha. Hwi's empathy for the chief eunuch, despite all the hurt he'd inflicted on her and her people, really displayed her strength of character and made me respect her even more.

And of course, the best part of this episode — the drinking scene was so cute! Drunk Ji-woon was adorable, Ga-on never getting off bodyguard duty was hilarious, and Hwi's smiles were so pretty <3 I lost it at Ji-woon's drunken flirting with Ga-on and Ga-on coldly shaking his arm off, ha.

Last of all, that ending kiss! I love that Ji-woon's impulse is to give Hwi an innocent, chaste kiss on the cheek. It's so sweet, and such a breath of fresh air for K-drama drunken kisses. Definitely onboard this OTP <3

I was amazed that the tiny crown prince was able to punch out the physically imposing eunuch. Dramatic scenes like that give the drama one tone, then Rowoon's exaggerated expressions make it seem more comic. Honestly, I'd take Prince Jaeun over the impulsive tutor any day.

The scene that absolutely stole my whole heart this week was between Dam-Yi and Court Lady Kim. The love and reverence in which Dam-Yi combed her hair and the softness in her compliments and Court Lady Kim accepting that care - my heart absolutely ached but at the same time was filled with so much warmth from the existence of their bond.

Chief Inspector Hong was an absolute ass but I still hold so much respect for Dam-Yi's choice to acknowledge and apologize for how their country failed him - I got so invested in her trajectory as the CP from this until I remembered how unlikely this story is to end happily.

To paraphrase John Mulaney: Joseon would have to get really cool about a whole bunch of stuff really quickly for this to end the way I want to.

@snowflower I'm just saying, Ga-On has a pretty convenient scar on his shoulder that may or may not have been caused by an arrow if you know what I mean.... :) (it's ridiculous and the flashbacks all but disprove the theory but I'm never giving it up!)

@teatimeandcrime, I still have not given up on the theory that the real Prince Hwi is alive. The camera did linger on Ga On's old shoulder injury and I thought it was for a reason. We did see a young boy at the tutor's execution and it is likely that he was the tutor's son. But whether the adult Ga On is actually the tutor's son or the real Prince Hwi remains to be seen. His mysterious back story is intriguing.

TBH, I have seen way worse introduced plot twists--so I may ship this (if only so the pair can have a HEA ending).

Totally would be unexpected if true--I'm sure we can imagine a later reveal showing how the Prince dressed as the "palace maid" was just out of camera view from the son. 😁

Nothing in this show makes sense, but the chief eunuch has been the most interesting character. He was a true psychopath, but his tragic childhood love story tugged at my heartstrings. He, sadly an eunuch and she, the emperor’s concubine.

I don't care for the love triangle. I assumed as a physician, Ji-woon would've known Dam-yi was a woman. Of all the times he's hugged her, did he not "feel" anything? Also, I think it's a waste of Ji-woon's talent to be a royal tutor. Hyun is love, but I can't ship cousins.

So I'm watching to find out Ga-on’s deal, which we learn today is related to Prince Hwi’s former tutor, and how long before he knows Dam-yi's real identity. Where is Jung Chae-yeon?

Hrm, tried to do a link back to a beanie wall post in my last attempt to post this, and it vanished...so I'll post again without it.

@miky88 had posted the fall/catch in their feed , and when I watched it again, my brain was screaming out that the background music was a call back to another show (which I vaguely remember it whispering when I watched it originally way past bedtime).

I've been wracking my brain (and spent some time trying to find it on YouTube snippets from other historicals) to try to recall which one--but still coming up short. I know that open riff being played on the gayageum at the beginning is used often, but...help a beanie out--am I nuts or is this a call back and if so--to what?

Y'all, I think the current King knows that his "son" is his daughter. Idk why I keep thinking that everytime I see how he interacts with him. He is just too much, barking here and there but never biting, and still keeping the Crown Prince safe as he promised his late wife. Idk. If it turns out he knew, I will not be surprised.

It's a weird exprience, watching this show while caring the least about the romantic relationship. The other relationships in this show are where it really gets me hooked. ESPECIALLY murky ones, like CP and grandpa or Jung and his father.

I don't know why, but that braid cutting scence was the most visceral part of the show so far. I think because it was so unexpected and you could feel how the damage is much more psychological and emotional than strictly phisical. The following scence with CP going in and beating up the head enuch was also impactful. The ice prince breaking his facade was a shocking moment. Followed by the sweet moment she had treating court lady Kim's hair and calling her beautiful... You can see the emotion comes through and how much she means to her.

The head enuch is.... interesting. Sometimes a bit to cartoon-y, but I enjoy the conflict he creates and how he doesn't really have a "side". Considering what we've been hinted at regarding his history, I think I can see why he acts the way he does. Though I would LOVE to know how he got this job as an envoy. Not being a total loose canon is a basic in diplomacy.

I think they try to make Jung look dangerous and capeable with a sword but I don't get this from his character, at all. Every time he holds a sword (especially those fighting scences where he expertly weilds it) It feels really out of place. The heist scenerio feels much more up his alley, for me.

Hyun continues to be the political intelegence agent that he is. I like to see him that way more than the third wheel for a love triangle bicycle, although it's kinda hard for me because ever since it was mentioned he was in Extracriculer and Beyond Evil it's hard for me to seprate character and actor, lol

Current bodyguard theroy: he was either a family memeber of Kang's or a poor child helped by Kang.
