Oh Jung-se comes to save his nephew in first teaser for Uncle
by tccolb
A new teaser has been released for TV Chosun’s upcoming drama Uncle featuring lead actors Oh Jung-se (The Good Detective, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay) and Lee Kyung-hoon (Memorist).
A remake of the BBC sitcom by the same name, Uncle is a coming-of-age story about family, and stars Oh Jung-se as a struggling, loner musician. After getting betrayed and scammed out of his savings, he’s already at the end of his rope when his estranged sister shows up out of the blue and asks for help. After being coerced into moving in with her and her son, the drama follows Oh as he helps take care of his nephew and as the two develop an unlikely bond.
Oh Jung-se’s sister is played by Jeon Hye-jin (Forest of Secrets 2). She’s finally divorced her abusive husband of 12 years and moves into a new apartment with her son, played by Lee Kyung-hoon. But her ex is fighting her for custody over their son, and Jeon is struggling to raise Lee on her own. To make things even more complicated, Lee also suffers from anxiety and OCD.
The cast lineup also includes Park Sun-young (A Couple’s World), Lee Sang-woo (Reach of Sincerity), and Hwang Woo-seul-hye (Crash Landing on You), who will be Oh Jung-se and Jeon Hye-jin’s new neighbors.
In the newly released teaser, we get a preview of the story from young Lee Kyung-hoon’s perspective. As the family drives to their new home, Lee notices the women looking at their car and he narrates: “Unfamiliar neighborhood, cold glances.” The camera continues to follow Lee as he goes to his new school, tries to ignore a bully, and hides in a bathroom stall when he’s upset. We see Lee Kyung-hoon clapping along sadly while the other children and adults enjoy an activity.
Next, we cut to Oh Jung-se walking slowly up the stairs to meet Lee Kyung-hoon. Lee continues, “When I was struggling to get through each day, like a miracle he appeared in front of me: my savior, my superman.” As Oh Jung-se and Lee Kyung-hoon look at each other through the window, someone off-screen asks Oh who he came to see. Oh Jung-se responds that he is Lee’s uncle and the teaser closes on Lee Kyung-hoon’s small smile. Introducing the drama, Lee states, “My uncle’s story.”
Written by Park Ji-sook (My Spring Days) and directed by PD Ji Young-soo (Room No. 9), TV Chosun’s Uncle premieres later this year.

Yes, yes, yes! I love this kind of stories! I just love family issues, and having at least one person who will save the day.
Also, how good actor is Oh Jung-se! He broke my heart in it's ok not to be ok.

Oh Jung-se is so versatile. I just finished watching "Touch Your Heart" where he plays the president of a law firm. He's amazing.

I see we’re in for a year of strong uncle/nephew-centric dramas. The trend seems to be a success because the dramas so far were critically acclaimed. And rightfully so.
Even without that, I would watch any drama with Oh Jung-se as the lead. That man is an acting genius.

I remember watching the BBC original (filmed in Croydon) and the thought that it's getting a kdrama make-over with Oh Jung-se in the Nick Helm role and Jeon Hye-jin in the part originally played by Daisy Haggard just made my brain explode.

Oh Jung-se and Jeon Hye-jin as chaotic siblings is definitely a huge draw for me. This looks like it'd be more gentle and less dark than the original though.

Now this is what I would love to see more of, actors who aren't necessarily the usual picks for main leads in these type of human/mature stories. I know visuals/trendy stars will always reign supreme in drama land, but it would be nice to have a handful of dramas with solid/un-conventional/talented actors in human/relatable stories as mains. Hopefully with the rise of streaming platforms, cable channels, and etc, we can have a bit of variety and diversity in who gets cast in these type of shows!

Ironically, it's the much-maligned terrestrial channel MBC that has the most adult K-drama on at the moment, i.e. On the Verge of Insanity.

MBC being the more lone 'underdog' in comparison to KBS/MBC, I do notice since the last few years they've taken some shows that wouldn't be greenlit. As in, some of the casts are more mature/older/less 'trendy' actors or topics. With Wavve (Joint venture w/ SBS/KBS/MBC/etc), & other non Netflix platforms popping up, we can see a bit more variety/options w/ its cast/topics!!
I do wonder and worry a bit about where these mature/adult topics/people will have a place? Part of me wants to be optimistic about it, and another part of me feels a lot of these type of shows will get lost/forgotten about...Although, w/ so much out there, will it all matter in the end lol :O?
