A new feature, the same Dramabeans

 /></p>
<p>Hi Beanies!</p>
<p>You may have noticed that things look a little different around here. It’s not a full-on site redesign, but we’ve rearranged the furniture so to speak. </p>
<p><span id=

We’ve been analyzing, squeeing over, and ranting at K-dramas for a long time now, and it’s time to take that into some new and exciting territory. Better than a last-minute save from the Truck of Doom, or a kiss from oppa (okay, maybe not that one), we’re introducing…user reviews!

We’re taking the star ratings from our Recap pages and introducing a whole new setup. Once you click on the new Shows tab, you’ll be able to see the top trending, top rated, and most viewed shows on Dramabeans. When you click on an individual show, you’ll be add that show to your favorites, give it a star rating, and write up your own reviews.

With the help of the DB community, we’re hoping to rock the world of K-drama user reviews and become the #1 destination for the most discerning of fan reviews. Because sometimes people need to know that Melting Me Softly isn’t worth the watch, that Bossam: Steal the Fate is a hidden gem, and that The K2 uses towels for very interesting reasons.

I also wanted to address another concern that Beanies have brought up. As adults, sometimes we do what’s necessary, but not necessarily what we want, to keep the lights on and a roof over our heads. Some of us may turn to illustrating adult material, and some of us have to turn to ads. Lots of ads. We know it impacts the user experience, and though our future goal is to reach an ad-free Dramabeans experience, we can’t sustain the site without the ads. (We hope that day comes sooner rather than later.)

Your role as a Beanie, should you choose to accept it, is to rate and review. If you run into any issues or have suggestions, please tag us @db-staff. This is our beta launch so thank you in advance for your patience as we put the finishing touches on the new features. Happy reviewing, and don’t forget to stretch your fingers in between writing reviews and exploring the latest DB look.

So... how long till the bots start posting reviews?

Random ratings that attracts fans and haters alike.
Ask a trusted friend for recommendations.

It can be fun to look through though.

A vey good question BUT if necessary DB can require that only properly registered beanies be able to post a review.

In fact, that would NOT be a drawback but rather a feature: People looking at the reviews would rest assured that these were real and therefore more reliable and honest.

Thus, for instance they would know that, yes, Bossam is very well worth the watch while one should run, not walk, away from FOREST. Comments from Beanies definitely save me from suffering through MELTY.

Not sure how to say this other than we did have a lot of laughs making fun of Forest in the recap comments...

I know it helped me watch the show to the end. 😁

So maybe we should have a way to let folks know "Many dropped this show, but read the comments because they're more fun than the show"?

This sounds good, I hope it will take off and create even more kdrama fans and Beanies!
I’m so happy to $upport Dramabeans as I am able because it is such a warm and safe place to talk about my favorite “hobby”. And I pinky-promise that should I ever turn to making erotic art, all the proceeds will come here. ❤️

This is a feature we have been working on to welcome more kdrama newbies. Not everyone knows which Kdramas to watch so recaps only go so far for those users. Please help us by writing some good reviews to help other newbies decide on what to invest their leisure entertainment time slots.

Last but not least, we have been approached by several of the big K-drama production houses and networks. The more reviews and ratings that our community writes, the more our voices are heard by the networks/production houses. In fact, I think we can eventually have influence and impact over how certain dramas are received by the international community which gives us extra influence in the industry!

This is actually what we’ve been wondering—if some of our ideas were ending up in dramas. Looks like someone’s paying attention! And I just saw Love Alarm 2 ratings was like 3.something. That can’t be right. It’s not great, but I would give it an 8 just for the acting. How did the ratings already get there when you just put it up? Is it pulled from the old rating out of a 5 point scale? But that wouldn’t explain some that are actually rated well (>9). I’ll peruse more later. Thank you!

It's a good idea!

I just hope people who will give a review would have watched the whole drama and not only 4 episodes. I think it's important to get the whole picture.

Yes!!!!

Perhaps they could lock reviews until the series is completed (?)

This would be an EXCELLENT idea. Or maybe also intro a midway review where you can indicate if you’d abandon it, continue with it, or badmouth it to all your friends - but just that rating, no writing. That way people can get a quick hint of whether it’s worth the watch. Sort of like “shag, marry, kill” but with k-dramas.

Would basically work like this: if it’s a 16-ep run, on ep 8 you can submit a “drop/continue/kill” rating. But the day ep 16 goes up, the full reviews section opens and you can write in your thoughts. Gives people who hate the show a place to indicate that meaningfully, and of course they could also leave a review.

I would also suggest nesting the “leave review” options on the ep 8 and ep 16 recap pages ONLY, not directly accessible from the top-level show page. Reduce the drive-bys a little.

Your plan sounds like a good start but many times I never make it to ep 8 and would want to be able to indicate the reasons I dropped a drama. Then I'm reminded of the Do Do debacle where things went south, story wise, at ep 10. Many Beanies never finished and were glad of it, myself included. Our reactions were loud and clear even without a rating system.

I like the idea of locking them until a show has ended, yet then if someone wanted to leave a review saying why they dropped it the might not remember to go back and do so. (I know I'd certainly have a hard time remembering to do this.)

Whether they enable the lock or not, I do hope that folks would mention in a review when they dropped a drama, as I certainly plan to do that when I find time to start writing some reviews. As has been pointed out, some dramas manage to get past a bad start, and others dive into the dredges mid stream too, as Miranda & @jossie4cheryl and have said.

We've been asking this on Viki forever - to no avail. In my opinion, it should be obvious. I don't know why it isn't done anywhere. Not even on Mydramalist.

After reading some reviews, some looked like comments than a real review that could help someone to decide or not to watch these dramas.

@db-staff:
I knew that drama hangouts are the hard Dramabeans features when they might want every episodes to be recap/weecap (which weecaps are the easiest one) (e.g. ongoing Bossam: Steal the Fate which this drama hangout might crashed the Dramabeans site again) so I want to propose to abandon the drama hangouts anymore and my only suggestion is are the new recappers will get to chance the weecap or recap (every episodes even the completed seasons too) the ongoing or old/past shows that currently only premiere week so far/yet with including the planned lifting on ban of smaller networks (MBN, Channel A, TV Chosun) so that let old and new Kdrama fans can see soon-to-be completed recaps/weecaps (e.g. Mine, Live (2018 K-drama), Lies of Lies, The Uncanny Counter). So with the fewer Filipino remakes of Kdramas (e.g. Descendants of the Sun, My Love from the Star), ongoing/past daily K-dramas (e.g. Miss Montecristo, Phoenix 2020, Amor Fati), ongoing/past weekend Kdramas (e.g. Once Again) and even missing web K-dramas (both ongoing and old/past) (e.g. Move from Heaven)?

I second this!

If they opt for dropping hangouts in favor of weecapping, I would volunteer for this for one show's full run at a time if they don't have enough folks to cover. As much as it's been nice to have the hangouts, I do prefer the weecaps over them.

I wasn't sure if I'd have enough time to be a regular recapper, so I didn't apply the latest round. Yet I could definitely do weecaps on the limited basis I noted above.

When I decide to reset my password and hopefully get my questions answered in "Open Thread" or " What we are watching", @db-staff comes up with a brilliant solution for the whole ordeal, I had been undergoing for the past two weeks. Thank you!

So, to summarize my problem, I started "Times" featuring Lee Joo young (in a lead role!). I completed 8 episodes and only 4 remains, but I so badly want to drop it. The storyline post 6th episode turns completely political and derails into a corruption mess which I'm least bothered about. Part of me wants to waste another 4 hours on it to see how it ends as I'm not able find any reviews on any of the sites. This feature will definitely solve such problems in the future and be a saviour for all the time-crunched beanies.

@db-staff That's brilliant, thank you for the new feature! Right now, you're probably aware of this and working hard to get it to work, but I'm just letting you know that I'm using my Android phone, and there are the following issues:
*Shows >Trending page isn't loading properly, I can only see the 2 top shows and there's no search option in sight.
*Shows>Most Reviewed doesn't scroll down.
*Also, can't find the way to post a review.
Hope this feedback is useful and am looking forward to read Beanies reviews and post some of mine! 💚

@db-staff I just tried to post a review (for Coffee Prince) but it won't let me post (like, nothing happens when I hit "send"). Is there a character limit? I copy-pasted from a Word doc.

I looked at the shows with user reviews, and it looks like the system only accepts one paragraph reviews for now. That's fine (space is a premium I guess) but would love to know the word count as my reviews tend to be long (like in mydramalist) so I need to know how much to trim. It's going to be hard to do justice to a show though.

The character limit for comments on recaps and news threads, and on comments under wall posts, is 3000 characters, which is about 500-600 words. From the appearance of the review system, I suspect it is the same on reviews. Since there is a reply feature, it would theoretically be possible (depending on whether they've fixed the initial posting glitch) to post a long review in multiple replies- although, from experience, this is a hassle, and creates its own issues ofc.
If dB would be so kind as to consider a longer character or word limit for comments and reviews, I for one would greatly appreciate it, but I also understand, as someone who has broken dB posting too much on the fanwall before, why they might prefer not to.

I demand a couple of margin spaces!!

OK I'm done.

Will it eventually be possible to add shows that aren't on the list? Dramabeans never intended to give comprehensive coverage of every kdrama out there, but we have a long way to go if we want to compete with the likes of Mydramalist, for example.

@db-staff I also wondered if it might be possible to add shows that don't currently have pages, especially older ones that are well known but never got recaps here. If the point is to become a one-stop shop for k-drama fans, it seems like greater comprehensiveness might make sense (for instance as a saguek fan, it's always made me sad how few have pages).
