Beanie level: Noble idiot

TRUE BEAUTY up to Ep11. Interesting, what I want to know is …why did Jugyeong‘s mother buy her such hideous spectacle frames? And why didn’t she get her daughter contact lenses when she was older?

3
9

As a life-long wearer of glasses, I can attest to the crappy taste in glasses frames I had in fourth grade. My mom cannot be to blame for those. I even put my initials at the bottom corner of one of the lenses like I was already a halmeoni.

    8
    1

Not being familiar with the word, halmeoni, I looked it up and the definition given is grandparent. I’m guessing the glasses made you look like an old person?

      1
      1

Yeah like a grandma to be precise. They looked like this:

I think I wanted to be Jane Fonda from the movie “9 to 5”

        3
        1

Ohh, I remember those big glasses, I had a pair too, my children told me I looked like Bertie Beetle! They were “big” at the time iow they were “in”. Prior to that, my glasses were very John Lennon.

          1
          0

    maybe she couldn´t afford it

    2
    2

or maybe she had no time to even shop with the restaurant and all

      1
      0

Yes, where I come from these are usually the cheapest type of glasses. And contact lenses can be very expensive. Maybe this is the reason I never have the same frustrated reaction that most beanies have to them in dramas. To me they are normal, and yes poor girls do feel ugly in them.

      1
      0

It’s kinda a trope in dramas, if you need to be portray “ugly” they will give you giant glasses, the transformation passing by lenses and not a normal pair of glasses.

    4
    1

Ah, that makes sense. The easiest, quickest, and least expensive way to make someone look ugly! The first time I wore glasses, the cheapest frames were the ugliest I had ever seen and I knew I would never wear them, no matter how cheap they were. I wouldn’t be caught dead in them. But there – that is real life, not some television drama so I got to wear the frames of my choice!

Recommendations for what to watch please – would like something hot, romantic, and kiss scenes. Good looking leads naturally. I prefer well built than thin weak fellas.

    Love to Hate You
    Perfect Marriage Revenge
    Her Private Life
    King the Land
Hyena [spoil yourself about the ending first though]

    1

Thank you, Seon-ha, I have just added Love to Hate You, Her Private Life, and Hyena to My List. I watched King the Land earlier this year, so it is in My List. The one I would really have loved to watch “Perfect Marriage Revenge” isn’t on Netflix. Sung Hoon is my secret crush! A girl can only hope…

      2
      2

Perfect marriage revenge is on Viki in Australia. Its only about $7 a month ( cheaper than Netflix) and there is a 7 day free trial- so You could clear your schedule and just watch PMR in a week.

        1

Her Private life covers all the bases ( Har Har) – well built guys, romantic, hot kisses- but the story goes seriously makjang from about episode 8

Thank you tabong. That also is not on Netflix. I will keep an eye out for it in case it comes out here later.
Australia seems to be the “forgotten continent”! Which is only to be expected – we are at the arse-end of the world! A bit like sliding down a giraffe’s neck and falling off at the end!

We are not the arse end of the world! Don’t say that!😱

        😂😂😂 I feel you.

But Netflix is great at discriminating.
        Not only Oceania is forgotten.
You know what they do to South America? They start airing the shows two weeks after the premier. Now that’s freaking bullying.

LAITA is on Viki, tho. Don’t know if Netflix will get the license too. :c

Maxton Hall on Prime – it’s Germany’s Boys Over Flowers with two likeable leads. Six episodes only with about 45 min @. A quick and easy watch. I finished half last night and will watch the rest tonight.

It was released in early May and has been the most popular series on the platform. A Season 2 is now confirmed.

Young Lady and Gentleman: watching Ep. 51, Yeun sil she is so delightfully common with her screeching and caterwauling, how could any man be married to that? Oh, I know it’s the role she is playing, but do women in South Korea really act like that? Half the time this little Vegemite has a hard time sorting the fact from the fiction! And Dan Dan’s father he’s a right royal little dictator! I do like whatsisname, the rich bloke though, not because he’s rich but because he seems quite sane and reasonable compared to the other fellas.

Mi Sook did a full 360° turn when it was her son living with his girlfriend! I thought it would be because she might think the girl not good enough for her boy, but no – it was the fact that he left his mummy! Haha…

Young Lady and Gentleman….halfway through episode 47 and am still pulling my hair out! I swear by the end of episode 52 I’ll be bald as a billiard ball!
Too much unnecessary rot.

not a good drama? Or good… i am looking for something to watch

    1
    1

Not bad, be prepared for a lot of unnecessary drivel and time wasting. The whole series could have been accomplished in less than thirty episodes.

      0
      0

After a lot of fast forwarding, I am watching episode 44. I find skipping twenty/thirty minutes here and there is good, you don’t lose the plot!
Honestly I still am fed up with cry baby whatsername and Sara? Well I find myself yelling at the telly, “You bitch!” I can hardly wait for her to get her comeuppance. And the father of crybaby too.

YOUNG LADY and GENTLEMAN
Who here has watched this? I am almost at the end of episode 22 and honestly? I cannot see myself watching another 30 HOURS! With 52 episodes in total, I will very soon be pulling my hair out by the roots! There is just so much unnecessary drivel and moving at a snail’s pace is enough to send even the most sane person quietly round the bend!

I am over Miss Lead with her naïve I don’t know look – she may have been a breath of fresh air, but yesterday’s breeze can very quickly turn into today’s stale wind. Her simpering and wouldn’t say Boo! to a goose is really giving me the irrits! Being a lady, I cannot say what I REALLY think!
Neither leads are my favourites but in my opinion, the male lead is a better actor! Wait awhile while I go in search for some appropriate photos.

2

I dropped it with the first amnesia hit.

I don’t know why they keep forcing this actor to act like a 15 years old boy. I’ve seen him act like that in three different shows (which I dropped).

    3
    0

The ML is also in the currently airing weekender – Beauty and Mr. Romantic.

He is a better actor than the dramas he seems perpetually stuck in.

    2

I tried and couldn’t even get through past like ep 10 honestly 😭

    0
    0

I watched it. I liked it. Yes its slow, yes the repeated amnesia is a pain, but sometimes an easy drama is what you want. Netflix (in my country at least) cuts the best two scenes in the whole drama, where they shockingly play music and ( I presume) Netflix does not want to pay for the rights. Search for them on Youtube

Which episode or episodes were these two scenes in? After a lot of fast forwarding, I am watching episode 44. I find skipping twenty/thirty minutes here and there is good, you don’t lose the plot!

Argh, they have gotten much harder to find since I was watching it! I’ve only been able to get the Kucowa versions ( so if you are watching on Kucowa they must be included)
Anyway, one of them is the fantasy in episode 23 https://www.facebook.com/kocowa/videos/4527432857379852/ And one of them is the proposal scene in episode 52 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjnq3DkH2ak- He actually plays again after the proposal, but I can’t find the extended version that includes that anymore
Anyway, hopefully they were not cut in your country and you got to watch it properly!

Episode 23 – that scene wasn’t cut out, don’t know about episode 52 as I’m not up to that yet, but I will let you know when I am.
….Still having to fast forward lots. Just do not understand why the Kdrama people don’t think how the viewer feels….Ho hum….

          1

If Episode 23 was not cut you will probably get Episode 52 as well. Lucky you!

    Joo Won 💕

    1
    2

Wasn’t he brilliant in My Sassy Girl? He was one poor, hen-pecked boy! From his mother to that interfering sister to the princess…..

      2
      1

And Baker King Kim Tak Goo with Yoon Shi Yoon too! Where is Joo Won these days?

      4
      2

It was not easy for anyone to stand before the tour de force performance of Yoon Shi-yoon in Baking King but Joo Won not only went toe-to-toe against Yoon Shi-yoon in what was his (Joo Won’s) first TV drama (he had only done musical theater before that) but managed to hold on his own, … more or less. 🤣 He even got the girl. 😉

I loved Joo Won in everything I have seen him in Yong-pal, Alice, Stealer: The Treasure Keeper, even the greatly reviled Netflix film, Carter. He is literally the best part of everything he has been in.

From time-to-time I like to see his YT videos of his performance in Ghost The Musical. Perhaps you would like to check it out. 😃

Unchained Melody, that’s just wild. I am very picky about musicals, they’re generally not my style, but Joo Won! He and BoA dated at one time, I thought they made a cool couple …

I loved Joo Won so much when I began watching Kdramas! He was my first Oppa (before KNG came and BB came). I just think he was the best part of many not so good projects. 😅 I was more impressed with his earlier projects (Good Doctor, Bridal Mask, Baker King, Yong Pal) than the later ones (My Sassy Girl 2, Alice). I haven’t seen Stealer, but from what I gathered here it might be worth a watch.

          3
          2

Ooh! Stealer is a hoot and a half. A “superhero” who’s really a goof. I do hope you watch it.

Oh I just remembered another one which I loved him in so much! The weekender Ojakgyo Brothers! Not sure if it’s so dated to watch now, but his storyline with UEE deserves a story of its own. Such brilliant acting from both (and then they were just rookies!)

Sungkyunkwan Scandal Is one of my all time favourites, from Song Joong Ki to the delightful Park Min-young, it is the tale of a Sungkyunkwan Scholar who is not all he should be. Cross dressing back in those days? Not very Confucius like!
An engaging tale of Kim Yoo Shik whose three room mates find out at various times Kim’s secret and go into protection mode!

The handsome School President whose perfect looks have you drooling, his acting was meticulous -sadly he passed away some years ago – to the quirky goings on of our “Three Musketeers” to the engaging story line and beautiful costumes, this is a light hearted drama which doesn’t lose lace and never has a dull moment.
It is only available on YouTube in my area, the visuals are good with no ad breaks.

After having endured four painful episodes of “Behind Your Touch” and the beginnings of yet another even more painful one (episode 5) I threw in the towel, spat the dummy and walked away in disgust! I am so annoyed with myself for letting myself be sucked in and wasting four and a half hours of my life!

The synopsis sounded funny and I’m thinking this sounds great, different, I’ll enjoy this one! I tell ya, you’d see more action and have more fun with a room full of stiffs in a funeral parlour! Ohh, it was pathetic (yes I know, not very professional but I’m not a journalist so the gloves are off!).

The lead actress, Han Ji-Min drove me up the wall with her pathetic, narcissistic thinking about HER wants not giving a fig for the poor idiot of a detective – surely crimes are more important than sniffing an animal’s backside and trotting off to find the owner!

Lee Min Ki is our leading man, usually I really like and enjoy his roles but not this one.

Han Ji-min comes across as thoughtless and a sandwich short of a picnic. Had the role of vet been played by a different actress, it might have been so much better. If you haven’t yet watched it, you’re not missing out on anything!

5

Haha, don’t force yourself to watch something you don’t like!!! Comedy is extremely subjective, and those of us who enjoy it are having way too much of a blast, but it’s not for everyone! Hope your next drama works out for you!

    2
    1

If comedy is subjective, then the one who wrote this and deemed it a comedy should be punished for lying! Shows, jokes, sayings etc are funnier to some than others, this wasn’t just unfunny, it was bad, really bad. It wasn’t a good anything. A crime has been committed against my aural and visual senses.

      0

Same, the premise sounded really bizarre, but I still watched for Lee Min Ki, but gave up after 1.5 episodes, I might watch it if I have nothing else, but for now it is off my list

Netflix has really mucked up the pleasure of watching KDrama! Previously, audio was Korean, subtitle was English, that was fine, I became used to this, tending to the softly spoken language – that is how it was to my ears a very pleasant sound. Unlike listening to Chinese dramas which I simply cannot stand because listening to it was an assault on my ears – very harsh and gutteral.

Korean is different, it sounds harmonious and restful (except maybe when Jang Young-nam throws one of her magnificent tantrums!
Jang Young-nam is an absolutely brilliant actress and she handles these roles marvellously, you only have to watch her as the Queen Dowager in The Crowned Clown!)

Anyway, getting back to my point, Netflix have gone and stuffed it all up! Now, when watching Korean dramas, they’re (the actors) voices have been dubbed by hideous voices with strong American accents. Had they used Australians giving strong Australian accents, I would be equally cheesed off. It’s horrible, simply horrible.

Some Kdramas haven’t been interfered with as yet, but the ones that are! Mein Gott it is so annoying!

Please Netflix, hands off Kdrama!

3
13

God, they haven’t done that to any I’ve watched here in NZ… I would hate it. I really love hearing the actors speak their own language, sounds so beautiful and flowing and natural. And I like being able to hear in just a very small learner’s way, where the English subtitles aren’t actually translating what’s said, eg when the subtitles will use the actual person’s name but the actor is actually saying “sonbae” or “hyeung” or “ajhumma”. I guess it’s because there isn’t an idiomatic English translation. But dubbing…no no no.

    3
    2

I haven’t noticed it either (also in NZ, hello!) so hopefully it’s something just playing with the settings will fix.

        Howdy, fellow Kiwi!
I’ve looked at a range of kdramas on my Netflix feed, from 2007 to 2023, and some have more audio and subtitle options than others, but at a minimum all have Korean original audio, and and subtitle options of English or off.

      Hello Kas61,
Greetings from across the ditch! If it hasn’t happened over there then you are lucky. I too like learning in some small way various words and about family hierarchy. Hyung, sunbae, abajae.
The latest two series I’ve been watching, I have to alter the audio every episode for one of them.

      0
      1

Hello Netsuke! Incredibly irritating. I’m sure most kdrama watchers will not appreciate dubbing… it would ruin the experience for me. Makes you wonder who is making these decisions.

        0

Can you choose to have the original audio, even if it defaults to dubbing?

I thought I’m the only one on earth who can’t enjoy the way they speak. I’ve been avoiding Cdramas for the same reason. That’s too bad! I, too won’t be able to watch Kdrama if they were dubbed. Besides, isn’t it just a waste of money?

In Spain some k-dramas (the Netflix originals ones) are dubbed in European Spanish and some other dramas are dubbed in American Spanish.
But I always watch all the shows in Korean with English or Spanish subtitles.
You can change the Audio and Subs for each drama, so don’t panic 😉

    3
    1

Yes you can change the audio/language but some series it has to be done at the beginning of every episode. That is a real pain. I’m watching the series about the psychic vet and the detective.

      1
      0

To change the audio back to Korean, you only have to adjust the audio settings within the subtitles menu, choosing “Original Korean” with English subtitles.

Hello and Good Evening to youall in Kdrama land, I trust this finds youall well and full of beans! Pun intended.

Having a brief look at the dramas you’re covering on the front page, I haven’t seen any of those. Either they aren’t out streaming and screaming in Netflix land Downunder, or I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole again in the Dark Forest near the Kingdom and landed upside down under a Ginkgo tree in Joseon!

Joseon is my favourite time in the Land of Morning Calm. I would so loved to have lived then but have come to realise it would only have been lovely and fun and well…nice! if you were a member of the Aristocracy – the Yangban class.

Coming back to today’s world, in Australia, I have been watching “King the Land”, and “See You in My 19th Life”, “Doom at Your Service” which I ab-so-loot-ley loved! Others I am sure are also streaming and screaming but I am (finally) watching “Poong: the Joseon Psychiatrist” after having seen “ Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency” – loved that one too!

So many handsome leading men – the ladies don’t hold much appeal for me, and the glorious costumes of the Joseon Court…oh my!

8
3

High five from a Joseon lover here 🙌🏻. I also loved Poong season 1 and the couple overall. I hope you enjoy watching it!

    1

Hello Anne18 – good to meet another Joseon lover! So far in Poong, I’m almost at the end of episode 9 and loving it! Kim Min-Jae is such a cutie with his pretty face, he looks dashing in pale turquoise silk! And yes to Lady Eun-woo, lovely girl, knows her own mind and not afraid to speak it!
