Seo Hyun-jin set to become a law professor in new SBS romance

A new romance drama is in the works for SBS called Why Oh Soo-jae and casting has been confirmed for Seo Hyun-jin (Black Dog) to play the leading role.

The story is reported to be a student-teacher romance with Seo Hyun-jin playing the titular role of Oh Soo-jae. Described as extremely bad-tempered and having a tendency to be unkind, the character works as a professor at a law school.

The male lead has not yet been announced, but presumably he will be one of the law students at the school.

I’m always wary when it comes to story lines about student-teacher relationships. But I am relieved that the setting is at least post-high school and the student won’t be underaged. I do love Seo Hyun-jin, so hopefully the drama turns out to be a pleasant surprise!

Writing for the drama is Kim Ji-eun (Lies of Lies) and directing will be helmed by PD Park Soo-jin (Hymn of Death), who worked with Seo Hyun-jin previously as an assistant director on Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim.

SBS drama Why Oh Soo-jae is currently being planned to air early next year, in 2021.

Can we have successful career women with nice temper please
There's stigma that single successful career women have bad temper, prickly, etc. Why? Can they be friendly, yet still with integrity? Can they be quirky as well?

You are exactly right about that. Yet she knew how to be really tough when that was needed.

Ikr? I hate when they make successful women, bitchy and cold, and single. Like In-jae from Start Up was, altho she did warm up in the end. But even then, its problematic, why should she warm up? It's her personality. I Do, I Do!! Check that out, Kim Sun Ah killed it there. She was cool, calm, and collected. Not the warmest, but I appreciated seeing an older career women act her age. I'm so tired of aeygo, immature, clueless naive shows about women who have been single since birth. That' just untrue, esp. since in S.K, couples date, sleep together, and etc. before marriage. It's just not realistic lmao.

I know, there's no correlation between cold and bitchy and having successful career or being single. Some women being single is a choice not because they're nasty and unapproachable. Successful career means being professional means ready to listen, open to criticism (don't take everything personally it is just a job), positive attitude, at the same time still level headed. Why people cant see this? Why it is so hard?

I dont think In Jae was cold really. I feel like she was warm with her employees cause no employee would quit a stable job and follow their boss to work in a Start Up, unless they trusted her and felt comfortable around her. I'm guessing she just liked to keep things professional. Anyway I think In Jae was amazing as a boss

You are exactly right about In-jae as boss- That sort of loyalty would never be given to someone who did not care and was not worthy of the highest trust. In-jae's iciness was always just a protective shell- and the people who got a chance to know her could see that.

But what impressed me about Kang Ha-na's performance is that she could communicate her inner vulnerability to the audience- we may have been momentarily put off by her behavior on occasion but we could see where she was coming from.

I am of similar mind like ttcolb on this one -- the ick factor is dimmed by the fact it takes place in law school. After all, in terms of age gap and uneven power dynamics involved, would things be all that different if instead of law student and professor, it was a 24-year old intern in a romance with a 35 year old CEO at Ginormous Corp.? (Hello, "Boyfriend"!)

Three of my peers were more or less openly involved with professors during my law school days, although I do believe all the relationships started after their respective courses had been completed. Not saying its a good thing, but I am unaware of any regrettable results, either. And candidly, if my criminal procedure professor had been like-minded...never mind.

The age gap doesn't bother me. The power dynamics may bother me. Also didn't make it past the first episode of Boyfriend, mostly because I didn't believe either of the leads as a romantic pair.

What bothers me is the unnecessariness of it all. Why couldn't he be a new professor or even a student at another university.

Also what law school did you go to? lol. That happened with a student who have graduated years before me and they were still talking about it with ick in my 1L year.

Yeah the power dynamics. It's weird they're doing a student-teacher romance in 2021. Hoping that maybe they'll lessen the ickiness a little by having her be an adjunct faculty who teaches one course and does not have any voice in the school.

Luckily it's law school. My former law classmates age from 18 to 41. There's older people who go back to school, so hopefully her law student is at least closer in age...nothing crazy like 18 year old vs. 30 year old Seo Hyun Jin.

A thirty-ish successful male having a middle age crisis decides to go to law school to find his inner nerd, and for some reason falls for our younger and crankier Professor. So many possibilities!

I am almost 100% sure they are casting a younger. The Soompi writer said the said "The actor who will play the younger male lead is still a secret.”

Sigh. It would be much more interesting with an older actor. An older successful would off-balance the power dynamics in a much more interesting way.

Looking forward to this! So I guess she's not starring in that drama that Kim Seon Ho is rumored to be reviewing? I'm thinking they are looking for a younger male lead (not another underage ordeal!), based on what I read from Soompi.

On proper googling lol, she was never offered the FL in Link. It was netizens who liked their look together, and started a rumor about pairing them up. It caught some traction that tvN made a fake cut of the two. But nope, she's clearly doing this drama so she's not going to be the FL for his next work. Speaking of, KSH hasn't confirmed if he's going to do the drama nor have they brought up any names yet either. Although, WWYS director Oh Choong-Hwan is also directing this new show with SHY, and he LOVES KSH a lot!

Hmmm, I wonder if he'll mention KSH's name considering he loved working with him on Start Up. Only thing is, this new SBS show seems more female fronted/her p.o.v which is great! So I think KSH will choose a project where he'll be the main 'main' so to speak.

I want to see him paired up with someone sexy/alluring/mature lol. No more good boy!! Only thing is, he's been alluding to knowing how people want to see him in a rom-com. However, its hard to tell if he'll do Link or not. I bet loads of writers are wanting to work with him. But tvN is a good relationship to have with, since his last 2 dramas were from them.

Seo Ye Ji, Moon Chae Won, Kim Tae Ri, Son Ye Jin, Lee Bo Young, or Kim Hye Soo would be fabulous pairing with him. He's always gotten younger FL's, so this time someone his age or older would be great. #NomoreGoodBoy muhaha :)

I agree that I think Seo Hyun-jin normally takes on roles that primarily focus on her character these days. I don’t want Kim Seon-ho to play an ML that feels like SML either. Let’s hope for the best for both of them. I’m rooting for them both and pray that that take on roles that are a bit challenging; that way they will becoming better actors.

I’m wanting to see KSH exuding some sexy vibe; so if he can take on a role that is mature and sexy and something different from Han Ji-pyeong that would even be more interesting.

I read a recent article about the dearth of star actors in their 20s and 30s. It would be nice if someone like a KSH, filled that gap lol. His theater work seems more varied and interesting. His next play 'Ice' and he plays a brutal and foul mouth detective. I wish he would play a role like that on-screen one day.

He definitely is sexy lol. Even if its not 100% sexiness, I see 50% sexy and 50% cute. In Start Up, I def. saw his sex appeal but also his manliness too. The man himself, wants to be sexy lol. Grant him his wish!! I would die to see him in Something in the Rain/Oh My Venus type of roles/shows!! Only thing is, can we handle it :)?

1

@soulsearch12 I personally think I can't handle it. I mean he'll be literally too cute to handle. *swoon* *blush* *awkward laugh*

1

Did you see his reaction video? Imagine if it was Thirst tweets lol, dude would prob. faint. Lol, I'm both excited but also I'm not sure I would be able to handle it too lol! Oh, I hope he chooses his next project wisely. It's going to be nerve wrecking whatever he chooses!

Him and Kim Tae RI would look amazing together

Yes!! I think a great actress with some distant trait to them, as well as charisma would be amazing for him to work off on. My dream pairing of his would be Son Ye Jin or Seo Ye Ji!! Ah, dream big as they say :)

I guess this is not the one that line up Yoon Kye-sang with her. What a big disappointment - they would be such a wonderful pairing with the right age and doses of charisma.

Not happy with another Noona romance.

I don't mind 30s-40s pairing, as I feel its more mature age wise. Plus, women in their 40s can still date!! But 20s-30s is eh. I def. have been seeing some shows lately cast these young actresses early 20s opposite mid-late 30s, and its like ://

Yes totally agree with the 30-40 and 20-30 thing, but more than the age gap I can't seem to ever be comfortable with a teacher-student relationship like ever :/

Ugh yes, I have missed some shows because of that very thing of casting young 20s actresses with middle aged man (exhibit 1 : Mr. Sunshine)

Total agreement here! I also hate the power imbalance as well. Why can't it be equal footing partners in K-dramas as well? Why does the women always have to be poor/weak, and the men are more educated/stronger? Make them equal footing, I say b/c in rl, its more applicable/realistic imo.

Mr. Sunshine: They had no lovey dovey/kiss scenes/skin-ship (barely), so it wasn't that bad. But look at Kim Yoo Jung and that drama she did in 2018 *forgot the name. But she was 18, and the guy was 34, and they had a steamy kiss scene, ugh. Or Kim Sae Ron with Yoo Shi Yoon, she was 16 and he was 30 or so in Mirror of the Witch. YIKES.
