Premiere Watch: Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol, Private Lives, Tale of the Nine Tailed

Yay, new shows! It’s not that we don’t have enough right now, but new ones are always welcome, and this week’s array has something for everyone. Cute, breezy music-themed romance? Slick tale of stylish swindlers? Darkish fantasy drama with room to be a huge hit? That’s the week we have ahead of us, ladies and gentleman.

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Rom-com
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: It’s finally here! It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for our dose of cute Go Ara + Lee Jae-wook drama to premiere. In fact, I’m almost feeling a little sorry for this drama, which missed its timing due to pandemic delays, and also has its fair share of drama competition out there right now (especially in the music + romance department). While everyone might be tuning in mainly for Lee Jae-wook’s first leading role (myself included), let us not forgot that this drama is penned by the same writer of the hilarious, heartfelt mayhem that was Shopping King Louis. So, I’m rooting for this show. Be zany, wacky, and ridiculous — just don’t be boring.

Private Lives

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Crime
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Definitely the sleeper on this week’s premiere list, Private Lives just might be a lot of fun, with its focus on con artists, identity theft, and catfishing. I can’t put my finger on the exact sort of drama we’ll get yet, but with the writer of Heartless City behind it, I’m hoping for something with emotional depth to balance all the snazzy caper vibes I’m getting. The cast is also interesting and low-key, with Go Kyung-pyo, SNSD’s Seohyun, Kim Young-min (who everyone knows as Rat from Crash Landing on You but was actually even better in A Couple’s World), and Kim Hyo-jin, who hasn’t been seen on the small screen in a while. I’ll definitely be checking this out just for curiosity’s sake, with the hopes that it will be a cool balance of style + substance.

Tale of the Nine Tailed

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Do you hear that? It’s the sound of the drama that just possibly could be the hit of the fall drama season. Tale of the Nine Tailed is being promoted as equal parts action, fantasy, and romance, and it has the delicious-sounding premise of a gumiho who’s living in luxury in Seoul, pestered by the PD that’s determined to uncover him. There’s something about this whole drama that feels sumptuous, gothic, and fun. While there’s always the potential for it to fall flat and crush us with disappointment, I’m hoping for the smash hit outcome instead. The cast is also exciting, with Lee Dong-wook in a role that looks awesome on him so far, and Jo Boa hopefully going back to her Shut Up Flower Boy Band era so I can finally forgive her for Forest. More than our leads, though, it’s Kim Bum I’m most excited for. He plays an excellently impish and sexy bad guy, and I might tune in just for his performance alone.

Bummed that Private Lives wasn't picked up for recaps? This looks like it could go away and no one would notice, or it could be one of those shows that surprise in a good way but has small viewership but cult following. It's airing on Netflix, but you wouldn't know that b/c it's not promoted on The Swoon :3

Here for Go Kyung Pyo though! He lost his mom during shooting :( but he came back this week to shoot again. He said that the FL leads the action here, as the story resides on here which is what intrigues me. Heartless City also same writer was excellent at the gritty underbelly, which this show also shows. Hope its good!

Out of all three dramas I’m excited for Private Lives, I’m disappointed it’s not promoted on Swoon though, usually all netflix kdramas are so I wonder why this isn’t, I would’ve loved to see Seohyun and Go Kyung-pyo promoting their drama on Swoon..

I really feel for GKP :( Hope he receives support from the cast and staff as he continues filming

Same. Visually they're a hot pair. Plus spy/con hijinks written by Heartless City/Bride writer! IA. Was It Love? got promoted well on The Swoon, but Private Lives is cricket, cricket :/ I was hoping for an interview at least, but I think they're more promoting ROY/DoSolDol instead.

Yeah, I can't even imagine his pain rn. He's a trooper, he's also signed on to Park Chan Wook's new film which is filming this month. I believe P.L is almost at the end point filming wise (Ep 12: They're filming), so I hope he stays strong as he's going to be filming both show/film simultaneously.

It's the first time I've heard of this drama. I like Go Kyung Pyo, and I like Seohyun as an idol. I haven't been that impressed with her acting but she's amazingly beautiful on-screen. I am sure she's improved a lot and I'll tune in to this new drama :)

Agreed. I've found some if the choices lately odd. Some really great dramas have been passed while not so great ones recapped. For inathave I would have done without "was it love " it honestly wasnt review worthy

I really think that if Drama-beaners had an option to choose which shows get chosen or not (Maybe not all, but 2 shows), then it would possibly open up the window to selecting under the radar shows to re-cap on here.

I am not privy to DB management decision making but I have always ‘assumed’ that the wonderful DB ‘minions’ are not assigned dramas to recap. Recapping I think is hard and time consuming. Our great recappers make it look easy but a I am sure it is anything but.

I was surprised that Private Lives was also on Netflix.
No promotion what-so-ever...
I'll check it out because of Kim Young-min and the theme sounds fun. It could be a gem.

In the US, it started streaming today (Ep.1 today, Ep.2 tomorrow).

It depends on where you live... Some Korean dramas aren't aired simultaneously on Netflix and a Korean channel in some countries like Japan.
They stream all the episodes together on Netflix...

"Private Lives" seems to be overshadowed by "Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol" (geez, could I title be any longer?? XD Jkjk) and "The Start-Up" on Netflix, as it's not getting much attention on the platform so we'll have to see how that goes....

Y'all can tell me how "The Tale of the Nine-Tailed" ( say that 10x fast and 10x more lol) will go-- I'm scared to approach, even if it IS sweet Kim Bum's first comeback drama in four year-- because it just seems so painfully cringe-y and campy, imo, from all the promos XD

I have not had much luck with big, splashy dramas in the last year plus dating back to Arthdal Chronicles, followed by King and now Record of Youth (admittedly, this one is nowhere near the disappointment of the first two.) They share certain similarities: too much reliance on male star power, not enough tightening/editing of the script and underwriting the lead female role(s). I see the potential for the same problems with Nine-Tailed but I dearly hope it is good. My wife's Zoom-viewing parties with her girlfriends are heck of lot more entertaining when they get squee-happy.

I was going to be skipping on all three - not having enough time to start new shows - but learning that Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol is from the Shopping King Louis writer means I'm definitely going to watch at least the first couple of episodes.

Hopefully, it is as charming as that one.

I find myself genuinely interested in all three of these. Back in the summer I'd say it was Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol that I was most pumped for and confess that DYLB probably stepped into its shoes. I'm getting my dose of music right now (and am not a big Go Ara fan), so I may reorder my interest and put Private Lives in place of priority. I'm hoping you're right and it's a sleeper hit!

At last, DYLB episodes 11-16 or final six episodes (which episode 11 had a Monet painting inspiration) will be faced off on ratings war with the first six episodes of Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol. I'm very excited to see on ratings. I hope DYLB will win so I already braced myself.

Tbh, not to be rude but I find a lot of the actors in K-dramas that typically lead their show to be more hit/miss. I would look more to their films to see more of the acting side unleaded w/o much backlash. Maybe they could surprise? Wasn't Seohyun good in Time?

Dramas in the second half of the year are better the the first half usually because they are looking at the drama awards?

Anyway, Mon-Tue, I have to juggle with Do you like Brahms, 18 Again and Zombie Detective. My Dangerous Wife is added now.
Wed-Thurs, I don't think I'll watch Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol but still two new dramas to follow... Ugh
Oh right, The Spies Who Loved Me is coming too.
Happy to have too many dramas to watch than nothing good to watch, but it's so hard...

I'm behind on last week's shows and now all of these new shows are starting!

Definitely trying Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol and Private Lives. I admit the teasers for Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol didn't impress me much, but the writer's earned a lot of goodwill from me. Her dramas have ridiculous premises but a lot of heart. Private Lives looks like my kind of drama.

Tale of the Nine Tailed just looks like it will be a mess to me, but we'll see.

@missh
That is the way I saw work her too. But this reveals a subtext that I had not noticed in her earlier work.

In the earlier stories, mobility was both ways and the pathos not about the fall from position but the about how no matter where you are injustice forces people to become 'lost' and the struggle to survive.

This is different. For some reason even though it looks like a re-telling, there is a subtle change in how it constructs why the should feel for their fall. In this it feels more like the sadness is about how it is unjust for princes and princesses to fall or even live the life of mortals. This is a momentary "Ugly duckling" - who was always a swan.

I have a hard time connecting with the idea of the god king or its modern equivalents.

OCN’s SEARCH (Jang Dong-yoon) (available 10-17 on Viki) is my most anticipated drama. However with MISSING wrapping up next week I will be down to 2 current dramas (BRAHMS and ZOMBIE) so my viewing card will have openings.
There are some interesting dramas starting. I really enjoyed Lee Jae-wook in WEATHER. At only 22 years old he projects older and pulls it off in his acting beautifully. Go Ara was redeeming herself nicely (from HWARANG) in HAECHI when she had that unfortunate accident on set. So I think I will be watching TWINKLE, TWINKLE (that is how I will refer to DO DO etc).
