Song Joong-ki becomes mafia consigliere in new drama with Jeon Yeo-bin, Taecyeon

Song Joong-ki, Jeon Yeo-bin, Taecyeon

The main trio for upcoming tvN drama Vincenzo has been decided. Song Joong-ki (Arthdal Chronicles), Jeon Yeo-bin (Be Melodramatic), and Taecyeon (The Game: Towards Zero) have been confirmed for this mafia drama.

Song Joong-ki is set to play a mafia consigliere who escapes to Korea from Italy because of internal strife within the organization. He was the cold, logical master strategist and lawyer for the mafia, Vincenzo Casano. Belying his sweet appearance, he’s big on revenge.

Once in Korea, he ends up teaming with an ace lawyer who works for the biggest law firm in the country. She’s played by Jeon Yeo-bin, and together, they work to creatively punish corrupt, slippery villains by operating with methods outside the bounds of the law. Jeon Yeo-bin’s character is so tenacious that she would even sell her soul to catch these drug cartel villains. She’s Machiavellian about her ways to achieve her end goal, weighing the pros and cons rather than deciding on right and wrong.

Taecyeon will be playing an intern lawyer from overseas who wishes to be Jeon Yeo-bin’s “James Bond.” He has a macho appearance, but an adorably clumsy personality. He follows his preceptor, Jeon Yeo-bin, with faithfulness until Vincenzo shows up and revs up his hidden competitive side.

Vincenzo, written by Park Jae-bum (Fiery Priest) and directed by Kim Hee-won (The Crowned Clown), is tentatively scheduled to air in the first half of 2021.

Why does this give me shades of Heartless City? (Which is a good thing btw) Song Joong Ki as a mafia boss though lmao, ok. Taecyeon being in this too, I have to alert my grandma about this, she loves him lol.

Presumably because more gritty types like Park Bo-Gum and Kim Soo-Hyun were otherwise committed, lol.

He is the New Man. Icy, with an angelic face and a dark Mafia heart. Like a young Al Pacino as Michael Corleone. My heart broke for him. Now, if they could provide him a heartwrenching backstory, it would be perfect. His wife blown to pieces in an explosion. His brother gunned down in cold blood.

@kiara Oh, my goodness. That movie! I loved it. I am a huge Al Pacino fan. Insomnia was great, too. It haunted me for days after. He is such a talented, versatile actor.

And now I have no way to erase the alternate casting of Kim Soo Hyun as Vincenzo. The man could have his hair up, wear suit in all 16 episodes which is basically what I have been praying for all these years. Dammit!

Unless this is a farcical comedy, I will be interested to see what plot contrivances the writers have come up with to explain (1) how a Korean ended up advising the notoriously parochial and xenophobic Italian mob IN ITALY, and (2) how the same mafioso, apparently fleeing to back home because he was on the losing end of a power struggle (rather than a world-shaking attack of conscience), ends up working on the side of the angels (albeit by extra-judicial means.)

You know what always makes me chuckle in Korean dramas? When you have a high-powered meeting in a foreign country (France is high on the list!) and Our Hero strides in, the supercool, super rich CEO, and EVERYONE is speaking French, and our Hero opens his mouth and prattles off something important in Korean and...get this...everyone is nodding and taking notes and clapping and exchanging approving looks, and wow, they're not Korean, but, heck, they're so good they don't need a translator...and then, they open their mouths, one by one, and start a discussion in French!!!! With Our Hero! And he starts nodding and going uh-huh, uh-huh, and he rattles off something in Korean again! And they go back and forth and back and forth having this utterly BIZARRE conversation in two different languages and I'm scratching my head and laughing my head off.

It's hard to take this seriously when it reminds me of Yoon Shi Yoon's take on the Italian mafia in Flower Boy Next Door. XD

Will it be funny or gritty? FIERY PRIEST managed to do both (with more emphasis on the funny), but this doesn't sound like that kind of drama. Also, Kim Nam-gil is an actor who isn't afraid of embracing absurd situations and making funny faces... but I feel Song Joong-ki won't be asked to do absurd comedy any time soon. It's a pity though, because I think it could be a nice challenge for him. The cheeky scholar from SUNGKYUNKWAN SCHOLAR is still my favorite SJK role because he wasn't trying to be serious or cool.

The man and his fan/sword is in it too and the original Warrior Mu-hyul played by Cho Jin-woong (my fave character beside King Sejong of course).

Checkout HeadsNo2's recap too but you both are already familiar with that time period. SFD is the pre-sequel to TWDR so you'll get the background stories for the fictional characters in SFD here.

Alright the fact that the writer is the one who wrote the Fiery Priest and Chief Kim both dramas which I really enjoyed (I loved Chief Kim a little bit more). I will definitively watch this one because I'm curious to see if there is even going to have any comedy. The most probable it would be that it will have a black comedy and I doubt it that the drama would be all too serious. What I do like about Park Jae Bum is that he is one few who writes characters with flaws and distinct personality.
In comparison to most dramas that tend to have protaganists blend in one and together, he writes them as people a little eccentric perhaps but still believable people with flaws.

Because I thought that where they all go. AMERICA. I had so much fun with BoF and Lee Min Ho and his bros. I almost collapsed watching that excruciating "MAKE OUT WITH THE HOT CAUCASIAN GIRLS IN BIKINIS scene. I remember almost bursting my eyeballs snorting over the tortured, laboured exchange in "American English", "Hey-bro" and "What-ssir-up-yo-yo-yo"... admittedly, they never did get beyond those two lines, but, hey, I had such a great time, I was hysterical throughout. Required fields are marked *

To be honest, I think the whole Italian angle is just a gimmick to say that our hero is a geeenius as @bbstl pointed out, ruthless, and probably unconventional in his methods (because he’s a foreigner...) At the most I think we can expect one episode to take place in Italy, or maybe we’ll just see him flying back from Italy and that’s it.

In most dramas that I’ve seen the fact that they grew up abroad made absolutely little difference to the story (remember Alberto Gu’s non-existent English in CLOY... and he was “British”)

I can think of two exceptions where growing up abroad was an integral part of a character: Yoon Shi-Yoon as Enrique in FLOWER BOY NEXT DOOR got into computers because as a mixed-race kid he was often bullied at school in Spain. In SHOPPING KING LOUIE, where the Seo In Guk’s character grew up sheltered in France, he was consistently pretty horrible at spelling in Korean and addressing people formally.

There’s probably an essay somewhere in here on race in dramas and the portrayal of Koreans born or bred overseas.

So this got me thinking...

I've never watched a drama of SJK's long enough for him to take off his shirt. Hey, @ally-le, @bbstl @katakwasabi @sicarius

SJK wandered about shirtless in Arthdal. I know it was kind of dark to make out his chest, but I desperately need to know this...does SJK have abs?

5

BB + Skull. He’s gotta look scaaary and daaaangerous. Can’t just have random tattoos without meaning or depth of childhood trauma, pain and haunting sadness.

Also, he could’ve used a double for even his closeup scenes in AC. No one would’ve been wiser. There isn’t eyes powerful enough to see as far as abs. That’s way too much details you’re demanding 😂

2

@yyishere If it's like in Heartless City, he will have a big tattoo in the back and they will blur it on screen... u_u

Well. I must say I am a bit upset that Taec is not up for the ML role. This Mafia role was made for him. He is Hot with a capital H. He has an impressive stack of abs. He has a deep, soft voice. He has an incredible range of facial expressions, though only the truly astute, like yours truly, can see this. He plays STOIC wonderfully. And THINKING DEEP THOUGHTS is another natural talent. WORRIED is a given. As is CONFUSED. In fact, sometimes, when he's playing WORRIED, I think he's channelling CONFUSED. Keeps us guessing, that's his trick! He has that cute little frown that peeps out whenever he is delivering his lines so earnestly. And those eyes ------ don't even get me started! They scream, "Help me!" and I go, Awww, Taec, and I just want to cuddle him.

Hmmm... is that a new Oppa in the making? Or would that be a Toppa?

Ahahahahahaaaa I wish I could like this comment a hundred times. And it makes me sad that I'm reading it only now, end of Jan 2021.

"Song Joong-ki is set to play a mafia consigliere who escapes to Korea from Italy because of internal strife within the organization."
Oh, god! Really?! 😬

Well, not to brag, but if I could draw on my own personal experience...

When I was approached to do a cameo as THE STRANGE WIND in CLoY, I was initially reluctant, but my dear friend, @pakalanapikake was adamant I should give it a go. So I said, Yes, and the rest, as you know, is history. I roared in as TORNADO in Episode 1 and literally took the world by storm. @wishfultoki stopped breathing. @bbstl passed out. Her cat was so traumatised it yowled for ten minutes straight: that's the time it took for me to barrel down the mountains.

So SJK as a mafia consigliere? I say, bring it on. He just has to stay focussed and dedicated to his craft. Like me.

I look forward to your cameo in this drama. Will you be the BB tattoo?

Still mulling over it, but you know what, toki, I couldn't help but feel flattered that @ally-le watched the last episode of It's Okay and it seems there was a pivotal Deer Scene, and she thought I would have made a perfect Deer, and possibly garnered a few awards IF I had been the Deer, which I wasn't, to put things straight -- heck, I'm not even watching the show, for crying out loud...but that's fame for you, you get drawn in whether you like it or not...*SIGHING* *BLUSHING* ADORABLY*

I really like the cast. After Be Melodramatic I wanted to see Jeon Yeo Bin in another drama. Yeahhhh.

You're just hurt, LT. Admit it. You're laughing but it's sad laughter. Because SJK doesn't have you tattooed on his back.

I hope this is a better drama for Taecyeon. I didn't finish his last two dramas (Game Towards Zero / Save Me). I only watched one SJK drama (Descendant of the Sun). So this one a 50-50 for me to watch.

A Korean consigliere in the Italian mafia? they already lost me there. WTF? this wont go over well. Couldnt they find a better set up than this? lol and to make it worse they will have to cast the mafioso....yikes.
