Cha Eun-woo, Moon Ga-young youth rom-com drama in the works

Hwang In-yeob, Moon Ga-young, Cha Eun-woo

The drama adaptation for webtoon True Beauty has confirmed their lead actors: Moon Ga-young (Find Me in Your Memory), Cha Eun-woo (Rookie Historian Gu Hae-ryung), and Hwang In-yeob (Tale of Nokdu).

In this rom-com drama, Moon Ga-young plays a high school student who has no self-confidence about her appearance until she discovers the transformative power of makeup. Overnight, she turns into a goddess of beauty who hates to show her bare, makeup-less face.

Cha Eun-woo plays a selfish um-chin-ah (slang translation: “mother’s friend’s kid who always seems better than you at everything”) who has a hidden emotional scar that no one knows about. From appearance to grades to basketball skill, he’s top class. Although he’s the object of much interest and affection, he’s like a cold, brick wall when it comes to others.

Finally, rounding out the love triangle, we have Hwang In-yeob who plays an equally handsome boy. He’s the typical second lead who is warm and sweet but has a macho appearance.

True Beauty, written by Lee Shi-eun (Top Star Yoo-baek) and directed by Kim Sang-hyeob (Extraordinary You), will begin airing in the latter half of this year on tvN.

This sounds an awful lot like My ID is Gangnam Beauty... 😂

It is but a 100 times more shallow.

The Astro boy (no pun intended) seems to have a type of character.

a cold, brick wall

Lee Su-ho in the webtoon has no personality. He just needs to be very handsome and not emote... so Cha Eun-woo is perfect for this role.

I've never understood why this happens because dramaland is filled with good-looking people who are also, you know, talented actors.

I mean, I understand why. I just don't like it. 😂

Well, please give some names that fit the character more than Cha Eun Woo, could you?

I am not familiar with the source material, so I couldn't tell you :)

Technically he is known as the 'Face Genius' whatever that is supposed to mean. For this role specifically I don't blame him. He was the original "inspiration" for the character and the webtoon author insisted he and only he play this role.

Cha Eun Woo has already played this role in My ID is Gangnam Beauty... Both stories are very similar but on top of that there is the same actor for the same role? It's too bad...

I think Moon Ga Young will be perfect for this role! (But she clearly doesn't need make-up...)

So this webtoon has zero plot and the webtoon author basically modeled her life into a webtoon and dream cast all her favorite male idol celebrities. That is only one part of the problem. MGY is a good actress but she is at no level to carry the dead weight of not 1 but 2 male leads with almost no or sub par acting skills. This is going to be a mess with very pretty people.

I'm not sure what to make of this. I do enjoy reading the webtoon but on paper, this drama just doesn't seem interesting. Cha Eunwoo has played this type of role several times and do I really want to see him do it again? I absolutely adore him with Astro and as an idol, so my inner Aroha is telling me I should. I really loved watching Moon Gayoung in Tempted so if anything, I'd watch for her.

Aw so he's really doing this... I was hoping for a different character since he did so well in Goo Hae-ryung.

It would be hard to picture Moon Ga Young back at high school after FIND ME IN YOUR MEMORY...I first saw her in EXO NEXT DOOR, where she was hilariously good at playing the flustered fangirl who lives next door... So much second-hand embarrassment in that one. She also played a Joseon medical sidekick in LIVE UP TO YOUR NAME. I find her very likeable. I have not watched her in the unmentionable drama with Woo Do-hwan and Kim Min-jae.

I watched it purely for Woo Do-hwan, Kim Min-jae, and Moon Ga young. The three of them had more chemistry with each other than Woo Do Hwan had with the main lead actress. It was pretty terrible, but I loved the three of them so much I watched most of it....

She held her own easily with WDH and KMJ. Most of the acting in that drama was very good and the three of them were excellent, it's the drama that was terrible.

Moon Ga Young <3

On one hand, I like that she is getting more lead roles. But on the other, this drama sounds juvenile and typical. She recently played a lovely actress in Find Me in Your Memory so it's weird to see her back in a high school role.

The webtoon is actually quite fun but I have to agree, it is really similar to My ID, except our female protagonist uses make up instead of going under the knife.

When I heard about the casting of Eun Woo, I immediately felt disappointed and was hoping he would say no. He is extreeeemely beautiful but I'd rather see someone else. Afaik the webtoon artist was hoping for BTS Jin.

That said, I will definitely give this one a try. I love MGY and eyecandy.

Okay, True Beauty absolutely does not need an adaptation. It's fine, I read it every week, but there are far more stories that desperately want an adaptation - especially by the director of Haru Found by Chance, ugggggh!

Dramas that are based upon a webtoon at least start off with more to work with- and can be very good. The writer and director have done well in the past so let us see what happens here. Others have already noted that the casting seems to fit the story- so if the writer can work with the material to tell a good story this could really work.

Or not.

I may give this one a try but the premise does seem underwhelming. But do not forget that no one expected MY ID IS GANGNAM BEAUTY to be as great as it turned out to be.

Oh, True Beauty... I enjoy it for what it is, but will have to agree with what others have said. It’s cute but pretty shallow. There’s barely any plot or character development. When I first started it I thought the main focus would be the FL’s insecurities about her looks, but nope 100+ chapters in and she’s still just a girl who likes makeup and hides her bare face from other people. Not sure what they’ll do with a 16 episode drama, but hey they could surprise us!

I feel this, and the sentiment reminds me of Lookism. I totally went into that naively believing I was about to read a thoughtful toon about prejudices based on appearances. Haha.

As for True Beauty, I'm still waiting for her bare face to be a plot point beyond her insecurity about it. Maybe (hopefully) the drama will delve into that possibility.

To be honest, Lookism isn't all that shallow.

In some aspects it actually has a very realistic gasp on the situation.
E.g- the super ugly dude who wants to be a rapper and compares his sufferings to the ones Eminem had. In the end, he concludes that Eminem was handsome, as a result, he should work even harder than him.

And to be fair, I stopped reading it a while ago. I check in occasionally but it looks like a lot of "fight-porn" and multi-chapter episodes about things and characters other than the main plot, if there is a main plot anymore. But it's drawn well.

It may not be shallow, but it doesn't seem to be about what I thought it would be, and there seems to be no end in sight. Practically, I understand why there wouldn't be an ending anytime soon because it's still popular. People like the well-drawn, over-the-top fight scenes. Why stop something that works?

I don't mean to dunk on it. Not everything has to be awe-inspiring or deep to be enjoyable. After all, I'm still reading True Beauty!

Honestly, I feel like Gayoung is losing out on a lot by doing this drama. As someone who has watched her dramas beyond Tempted and Exo next door, I have to say her acting has grown so much in the past two years with Waikiki2 and especially, Find me in your memory. Not to mention that her co-stars in those dramas were Kim Seonho and Kim Dongwook, who happen to be extremely good actors and ones that she had really really good chemistry with, especially with Kim Dongwook, who also happens to be a Daesang winner. To go from that to immediately to this seems to be quite a step down for her. And not to mention that this character is in high school, when 3 months ago in FMIYM, she played a character who was 30 years old.

And also Eunwoo. He isn't the worst idol actor out there, but, that does not mean that he is a good actor. But, even then, if he does want to take his acting career forward, it would help him to take on different roles. Cold, brick wall with family issues was the same character description of his character in My ID is Gangnam Beauty. The only difference is that that was in college and this is in high school. Even the entire base of the drama is the same.

Isn’t this the drama, even before confirming it’s leads, involved in some sort of controversy??

I think it had something to do with the illustrator of the Webtoon basically taking the images—without legal permission— of many K-entertainers (actresses, actors, singers, etc.) and using them as his/her “muse” or “inspiration” (*ahem* RE: clout) for the illustrations of the webtoon... Coincidentally (or maybe not.... Maybe the illustrator used it as a tactic to lure his/her ‘dream cast’ if, or when, the webtoon would be adapted into a drama), Cha Eun Woo’s images were used as “inspiration”,

I think I will pass this drama. I usually don't watch any dramas with idols (I only watch dramas with idols that have already proven they can't act).

I'm not anymore into watching a drama just to look at "Beautiful faces".

Omigawd. My favourite troupe. You got me at "cold brick wall". Eun woo is so luminous, his smile, his teeth. Blinding, actually. I was struck dumb every time he smiled in Rookie Historian. Though I doubt he'd smile much here, being a brick wall. I adore brick wall characters. Have I said that? Oh, yes, I did. I am relieved she's no Candy...a refreshing change to have an insecure girl doll herself up behind makeup. Which means we'll get to see lots of makeup PPL.

PPL is written into the webtoon. If they follow the webtoon there should be PPL every 10 mins and not just make up but basically everything.

I would be laughing at the description if I didn't feel sorry for the leads. Eun Woo may not be a good idol actor but he should at least be taking steps forward rather than backward. At least he had a different characyer in Rookie Historian..... This character is the same as the one in My ID..... Also Moon Ga Young deserves more than this. She's an actress with a lot of experience. Are we sure this drama isn't produced by the Korean makeup industry?

the webtoon's plot is pretty bland though. not sure how they are gonna adapt it to screen and make it more interesting. the only reason i read the webtoon is just for the art. but story-wise...it's really meh. lol

i don’t know what they’re trying to achieve in this drama but all i can say is MGY looks like Seo Heji, i don’t know about CEW’s acting, HIS was amazing in Tale of Nokdu; with his deep voice and fighting skills.

On the surface, this sounds a lot like My ID is Gangnam Beauty but having read a few chapters of the True Beauty webtoon out of curiosity... it’s not really a fair comparison. My ID is Gangnam Beauty actually had really interesting things to say about stringent beauty standards, self-esteem, and internalized misogyny. It literally changed my mind about women that undergo plastic surgery! In comparison, True Beauty felt like a shallow imitation more interested in wish fulfillment fantasies than anything else.

There is a lot to say about beauty standards and the beauty industrial complex! And Korean women are talking seriously about these issues right now! It doesn’t seem like this show will be interested in engaging with that at all but well, I’m happy to be proven wrong.

Anyway, I’m glad Moon Ga Young is getting lead roles, she’s fantastic.

Cha Eun Woo's character is just the same with Gangnam Beauty so i don't think he's up for a challenge. read both webtoons btw and the vibe is similar (lookism centered topic).
