Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 20-26, 2020
by SailorJumun
It seems that we’ve reached a stasis, with the majority of shows settling in. For some, they’ve settled in to a rather small audience, but hey, everyone’s got their audiences. My Unfamiliar Family is one drama that’s always had a consistent audience, floating around 4 percent. It finished its run this Tuesday with an all-time high rating of 5.4 percent.
The midweek lineup is still looking pretty sad, even with the addition of United Effort to Accomplish One Thing (my, what a mouthful). The newest drama came in to 3.9 percent and went down the next day to 3.3 percent. It is the drama’s first week, though, so we’ll have to wait and see where it goes.
The weekend lineup didn’t show much change, with the exception of Graceful Friends. The drama made a jump from 3.7 percent last week to 4.6 percent this week. Again, it’s still pretty early — only its third week — so anything could happen. Backstreet Rookie and It’s Okay to Not Be Okay will be ending soon, so I wonder how their last few episodes will do.

Did good word of mouth lead to Graceful Friends' ratings jump? I waited four episodes for Lee Tae-hwan to die.

While waiting for my third crime drama tvN's FLOWER OF EVIL to commence I am enjoying both JTBC's THE GOOD DETECTIVE and OCN's TRAIN.
TGD found its audience at episode one and so far through six episodes it has maintained very good ratings (with an average of over 4 percent) for a cable drama.
What is a mystery (if you will) to me is TRAIN's poor ratings. I really don't get it. As far as I am concerned Yoon Shi-yoon and Kyung Soo-jin are giving fine performance with a great script (so far).
I took a look at some of the recent OCN Sat/Sun dramas:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programs_broadcast_by_OCN#Saturday%E2%80%93Sunday
My research. Excluding TRAIN I count 13 OCN Sat/Sun dramas going back to 2018. Of those 13 only 4 had an average rating over 4 percent: VOICE 2, PLAYER, VOICE 3 and WATCHER. 2 came close but did not reach 4 percent: BAD GUYS 2 and LIFE ON MARS.
OCN must be used to some dramas not having great rating on Sat/Sun.

1-3% seem to be the norm for OCN. IMO Train deserves better than 1%. I heard it's doing better on re-runs

I think OCN shows in general tend to do better on re-runs from what I've read, which I find interesting. Maybe people like thrillers but watch them secondary to other shows?

@krabkrab and @mindy,
Hopefully TRAIN is being watched one way or the other.
I thought perhaps the time it aired (10:30 pm) might be a factor but probably not. TEAM BULLDOG (part of OCN's Dramatic Cinema series immediately preceded TRAIN and it had an average rating of 2.840%.
Another current Sat/Sun cable drama (TV Chosun's KING MAKER) airs later and it appears that it will have an average rating close to 5%.

interesting
I watched ep 1 and 2 and was super disappointed in acting (more in FL, but even YSY didn't appeal to me despite knowing very well he is a good actor)
Despite feeling the pull of the story.. the direction or acting (can't pinpoint) made me never go back..
I guess drama has improved

Me too. I'm watching Train. It has actually become my most anticipated drama week after week. It has better storytelling than the previous parallel worlds story we had. And the stakes are higher. I hope it gets better ratings because it's really good. YSY is killing it. I know he's played tough guy before but he really suits the role in this one. It's my first time watching KSJ and I can say that I like her.

BACKSTREET ROOKIE continues to do well, as it should. It is a good rom-com with actual laughs.
ONCE AGAIN is holding its share- it is a good weekender but does not seem to be able to break the 30% mark.
It was nice to see my unfamiliar family break the 5% mark. It was a great show.

I really like Backstreet Rookie but for a series to be considered successful, isn't it supposed to get about 10% rating per episode when it's broadcast on one of the big three stations?

No, because so many people do not watch shows these days during the designated time slot- the way we all watched shows 30 years ago. If you look at these ratings you will see that only the weekender ONCE AGAIN is over the 10% mark - and that BACKSTREET ROOKIE is actually the 2nd highest watched show on the list. So it is successful - but not perhaps blockbuster successful.

Vagabond managed to cross double digit ratings in some of its episodes but it is only considered mid hit in Korea. Further, it was also aired in Netflix, the biggest online streaming platform in the world. So, I don't know what cross to your mind to claim BSR a success when it is not.

It's successful compared to other currently airing dramas but it's not unheard of for a drama to get 8% ratings but BR fans act like it's a massive accomplishment, it's very strange.

Be careful not to compare apples and oranges. 3 or 4 years ago all ratings were higher in total. We have noticed an over-all decline. The problem is that the ratings only measure how many people watch a show at the moment it is broadcast. But now that streaming is commonplace people are getting to watch their shows when they want to, rather than on the network's schedule.
In other words, the Roku stick, together with home wifi routers, has altered the viewing landscape. This major shift has happened not over decades but only two or three years. The COVID19 crisis has only served to accelerate the shift.
As a result the only numbers that now matter are the relative numbers- in other words only the ratios comparing one show to another in terms of viewers. By this measure- the only accurate one we presently have- BACKSTREET ROOKIE is currently a serious success, given that it surpasses all other shows in ratings except the excellent weekender ONCE AGAIN.

@marcusnyc20 Did it finish with 21 episodes? That's an unusual number.
I should get back to it I think. I was taking a break from Joseon sageuks.

Yes @wishfultoki KING MAKER is finished with episode 21.
I will watch episode 21 tonight. Kudos to the KM Viki team for having the episodes subbed so quickly.
I enjoyed KM and recommend it. Also it will be awhile before the next sageuk arrives ie QUEEN CHEORIN and NEW SECRET ROYAL INSPECTOR.
Did you get a group together to watch KIM SOO ROO?
I noticed that Kocowa (KBS, SBS, MBC) is releasing/bringing back some older dramas such as Son Hyun-joo's THE CHASER (SBS 2010) and Song Seung-heon's sageuk DR. JIN (MBC 2012). Maybe MBC's KIM SU-RO, THE IRON KING will be disentombed and made available. That would be nice.

Sorry @wishfultoki! I mixed up my Sageuk Sages lol. It was @kiara who suggested a group watch for KIM SU-RO, THE IRON KING. A non-Joseon era drama would be nice to watch.

Actually, I was considering KIM SU-RO and @kiara suggested making it a group watch. I've managed to watch Episode 1 so far and wrote a mini-recap of it with comments in this hijacked thread: https://www.dramabeans.com/2010/05/main-character-posters-out-for-kim-suro/comment-page-2/#comment-3695850

I wondered if Chip-In/United Effort to Accomplish One Thing will soon be turning into a disastrous flop and it might that it will join as the poorest rated MBC drama series this year along with 365: Repeat the Year, Find Me in Your Memory and Kkondae Intern.
Acording to sources that I ever found...

... it says that MBC looked like a temporal un-rebound for former dramaland for awhile in a bit of a year. I believe that SBS and KBS/KBS2 still took led in the national ratings.
Last, not at least, SF8 will be rebounding due to big eight sci-fi film/TV digital mediums by acclaimed film/TV directors.
