Welcome to our new editor, stroopwafel!
by javabeans
javabeans: Hi everyone, we’re super excited to introduce you all to Dramabeans’ new senior editor, stroopwafel!
girlfriday: We’re so excited to have her join us; we honestly weren’t sure we’d ever find our unicorn, and we don’t know what we would’ve done if we hadn’t discovered her. Probably cry a lot.
javabeans: Yes, we know our requirements were pretty strenuous, but we really felt it was important that our editor fulfill all of them, and stroopwafel definitely does — she’s a genuine K-drama fan with a deep knowledge of the industry, who loves fandom as much as the rest of us, loves Dramabeans, and is dedicated to keeping it going with our high standards of quality.
girlfriday: And by high standards of quality, we mean having the right opinions about which oppas are best. You know which ones we mean.
javabeans: You might be wondering why we needed to bring on a senior editor in the first place, so we might as well talk about the elephant in the room and where the heck we’ve been this year.
girlfriday: Working jobs to pay the rent, you mean?
javabeans: Pretty much. Real life intruded into our Dramabeans life, and to put it bluntly, Dramabeans life wasn’t paying the rent anymore. At least not all of it.
girlfriday: So we had to go get second jobs, just like any plucky Candy would do. See, dramas do teach you stuff about life.
javabeans: Well, a lazy Candy, because I didn’t get six jobs. Just the one other one.
girlfriday: To be a little more serious for a second, we were faced with the dilemma of whether we had to shut Dramabeans down for good. It was just too expensive to run, and revenues were diminishing. We’re bad at math, but we knew this much — we wouldn’t have lasted through the end of this year.
javabeans: That was a real wrench to consider losing all the content we’d produced over the past decade, and I was honestly gutted. But at a point, it no longer was a choice but an inevitability, so girlfriday and I decided we would rather find full-time jobs and run Dramabeans part-time than to lose it altogether.
girlfriday: That’s why we were light on content for a while, while we were figuring out how to run the site alongside our other jobs.
javabeans: We wanted to let you all know our rationale back then, because I know there was a lot of confusion about it and we would have liked to have been more transparent. But the reason we didn’t disclose the information earlier is that we weren’t in a position to; we were searching for ways to keep Dramabeans alive, and were in talks with potential investors or buyers, and it wasn’t appropriate at the time.
girlfriday: But after a lot of searching, we finally found a buyer that was committed to preserving Dramabeans and our vision, and has invested in bringing it back and even growing it.
javabeans: Rest assured, we will still be here.
girlfriday: Not that we were ever really gone though.
javabeans: That’s true, I know it seemed like you and I had left the site, but we were actually working on it every day — it’s just that keeping it going took precedence over writing stuff ourselves, so our bylines went away, although we didn’t. And that’ll still be the case now; I’m still editing, reading, watching, living and breathing dramas. Maybe just more quietly now.
girlfriday: We’re definitely not going anywhere, and neither are any of the writers. And we promise we’ll try to write more things. That’s the best part of having our new editor onboard, because she’ll get to handle the day to day stuff, and we’ll get to pop in for fun things.
javabeans: Shhh, she can hear you!
girlfriday: No! What I mean is, she’ll get to do the glamorous, rewarding, and sexy work of reading all the recaps, assigning every news article, striking every wayward comma, programming editorial series and reviews, wrangling the minions, getting the oil changed, squeegeeing the windows, and keeping Dramabeans online.
javabeans: Welcome, stroopwafel! We’re so glad to have you! Please don’t run away!

Yesssss I know it's so typical. LOL. But I actually don't like them that much- too sweet for my taste, but my co-worker gave them to me a couple of days ago and it's just now that I'm finishing the last 2 pieces of stroopwafels. Really wish I could send them your way instead!

Really happy to see this site continue. It is a nice kdrama oasis on the interwebs that is thankfully free of many of the fanboi/girl excesses that kdrama often attracts. xxx

Hello,
Just today in the middle of teaching my class Measures of time, I thought of you guys. It has been so long and someone had earlier pointed out at how less we read of you. I panicked a lot and hoped your well-being.
You girls have given us so much by spending your time. Really thank you so much. Thank you to God for giving you this idea. It has become a part of my life and i can never imagine life without it.
I never post because I am lazy and lazy.
Wish you luck and a great time to our new editor.
p.s-how can we help? let's get the site back

I know monetizing websites is an issue and am glad things are okay now. The Fug Girls have also been open about the problems "keeping the lights on" and The Toast is all archives due to finances, so we get it.
Stroopwafel is a welcome addition!

I am so incredibly grateful that The Toast is still up as a frozen archive. There are days when I need to read a Two Monks or How to Tell if You're in a Novel or Western Art History article! They are proven mood-lifters.
If Dramabeans ever had to end, I hope it can be like The Toast. The glossary and cultural articles were great and informative. Still are, just harder to find.

do you follow Nicole Cliff on twitter? It's not a return of the Toast, but at least you get her acerbic wit, genuine niceness, and weird cultural curation.
You know, it was also a corner of the internet where the community of commenters was also great. I'm glad DB has found a working solution, and I hope it continues for a long time.

Welcome @stroopwafel. I know that they have stroopwafels everywhere these days but I'm still wondering if you're originally from my part of the world...
Thanks @Javabeans and @Girlfriday for telling us what's been going on and for doing your utmost to continue the site! I'm hoping that your new jobs are going to work out and still leave you time to fangirl here with the rest of us. I love this site and if I ever need a pick-me-up, I listen to some of your old podcasts as they always make me smile instantly.
So many others have already said it, but this is such a special little corner of the internet, and it's all due to the community that you guys have built.

I was so happy to read this article... it feels like DB now has a new lease of life! Thank you Girlfriday and Javabeans for hanging in there for us though there must have been days it got really tough for you. Like many Beanies here, DB is my happy place and I drop by almost everyday. I would have been devastated if DB suffered the same fate as DF.
Congrats @stroopwafel on getting that dream job! You will be great at it (I know it because we like the same oppas 😜).

It's been said again and again but it's worth repeating again and again: we fully appreciate the hard work and endless ressources that have been invested in Dramabeans and we all are ever so thankful for this wonderful website. It would have completly broken my heart to see it shut down and it is a wonderful relief to see that it will continue for a while. I hope Javabeans and Girlfriday have found wonderful work opportunities where they may use their many skills developed on this website, so that real life can be as much fun as drama life. Thank you for sheding some light on the matter and I'm looking forward to the coming months on Dramabeans!

This comment is all too late and I doubt I have anything new to say that hasn't been added already but I am so glad you guys held on to DB even when things looked bad!
I just hope that if ever (though I hope that day never come) something wrong happens again, you guys open the stage up to voluntary donations cuz Dramabeans is such a big part of the life of us beanies that we would have definitely helped! I know some of us are not financially stable but I would still have wanted to do something! I guess you might have had reason for doing so and I trust you guys to take the right decisions anyway 💗
Welcome to the DB family @stroopwafel! Hope you have a blast of a time with us! I wonder if you were present on DB by some other username before, seeing as how you love Dramabeans :)

I am so grateful for DB, haven't looked back since 2009; so I was as fearful as the other beanies during those dark times. I always reminded myself (still do!) what a GIFT this site is that you were so GENEROUS in sharing with us that I feel I should always be grateful for whatever content you share, regardless of quantity. I'm just happy DB exists at all. Period.
Good luck with your other jobs, and welcome @stroopwafel !

Welcome stroopwafel! Wow, so much has happened (behind the scenes) since I last posted/signed in! I noticed when I popped in once in a while that the site seemed more quiet...I thought maybe kdramas had reached a state of saturation...or viewership was down...or yes, life happened (it did for me too). I can’t believe this site could possibly have been no more! I can’t imagine a world without Dramabeans! Without Javabeans or Girl Friday and all their minions! I’ve been a long time reader, sometimes participant, other times just silent lurker but this is a site very dear to my heart! Even if I don’t watch anything for a while ( my last kdrama was Lookout!) I still like to stop by and see what is happening, stay in the loop sort of. Thank you so much for still being here! And finding ways to stay alive! Things may change, people change, life happens etc. but your passion and dedication have always been unwavering, which is why we love this site and will keep coming back! This site has heart, and I am glad it is still beating strongly! And this is such a coincidence, or fate!, but I discovered wafels recently and have been addicted to them ever since! So welcome again stroopwafel! To another addition—and I was doing so well...

Welcome aboard! I don't know when I first started following Dramabeans, but it was pre-Girlfriday. It's nice to see the site evolve and grow as the interest in Korean culture grows. And, it's nice to see the site continue to stick to dramas. Korean pop culture sites do a fine job covering other elements of the entertainment industry, but it's nice to have a site that solely covers dramas, and the occasional movie. Thanks for the major commitment!

Please stay strong and do let us—-and there are many of us fans and supporters agreeable with the idea—-help with personal “donations” or a subscription fee should it be necessary to keep this site alive!

So thankful for your commitment to the site. I've been following dramabeans since high school and would have been really devastated at the loss of this great community. I love reading all the posts and comments here and feel really at home here in this virtual nook where all the kdrama lovers flock. As much as I love my friends, they don't get my love for dramas and the ones that do, I don't see often so it's great to come here and see the discussion on the latest drama. I also feel like this is a really safe place to discuss dramas because as we all know how mean/scary comment sections can be... when I read the comment section, I feel that everyone's pretty respectful and supportive of each other whether they agree with each other or not. Again thanks for all that you do and your commitment to this community! :)
