Han Ji-min, Nam Joo-hyuk, Kim Hye-ja up for JTBC time-bending romance

Ooh, PD Kim Seok-yoon of the stylish, thoughtful dramas This Week My Wife Will Have an Affair and Awl is back with a new series for JTBC, a time-bending romance called Dazzling. The drama is courting Han Ji-min (Familiar Wife) and Nam Joo-hyuk (Bride of the Water God 2017) to headline, and both actors are considering favorably for now.

The drama is described as a fantasy romance, and it deals with age-swapping and time-bending—something Han Ji-min is intimately familiar with in her current drama, where she plays past and present versions of her character in multiple timelines. This new series will be about a 25-year-old woman who rapidly ages and ends up a 70-year-old on the outside, while remaining a young woman on the inside. It’s a little bit like Thirty But Seventeen the extreme version, or the bizarro-world version of Miss Granny.

Everyone’s favorite mom/grandma Kim Hye-ja (Dear My Friends) has been offered the role of the young heroine trapped in an aging woman’s body, which already has me excited for what’s to come. Can’t you just imagine her swooning like a schoolgirl over Nam Joo-hyuk? Her casting does make me wonder if the heroine will spend a good deal of time as her older self, which could be the case given the premise.

The story is about how people use the time allotted to them in life, illustrated in two extremes by a young woman who accidentally loses all of her time and a young man who wastes away his time and chooses to live apathetically. The heroine by chance gains the ability to manipulate time, though perhaps not very well, because she ends up mistakenly in her twilight years. The character is described as bright, bold, and immature, even for her original age. Comedic fodder for days, this setup. I love it. I’m pretty much good with anyone being cast as the youngs in this thing as long as they can get Kim Hye-ja onboard!

Dazzling is aiming for a January 2019 broadcast.

Which probably sums up how a lot of 70-year-olds feel.

I felt like I'm watching more of the old lady than the young lady. It's really not by choice and I'm just waiting for the young lady to emerge again. How cruel to see her emerge for a dream and it's back to the old lady again. Do I really have to watch this old lady so much sigh.......

Can someone tell me when the young lady will start appearing again. I will be so devastated to watch the old lady till the end of the drama :( and it will also mean the guy and her didn't get to be together.

What’s with the weird age reversal plot lines a lot of dramas are coming out with. I like the production credits so I’ll probably check it out

It’s the work around to counter unbalanced gender’s prime. An actor’s prime (in popularity) in Korea is usually, USUALLY at a younger age, pre military service. While younger actresses can take roles of high school romance, by the time they have the acting ability/status, the male costars of comparible popularity and acting ability is either in military or returned at a lower popularity level (it takes years to regain premilitary popularity, or never for most actors because they are being replaced over and over again by graduating rookies. The likes of SJK are rare)

wow! I rarely find people who have seen Miyazaki films. Howl's moving castle is one of the best movies by Miyazaki after Spirited away.
I wonder if the ending will be somewhat like howl's moving castle, (heroine changed back to her younger self) but I doubt it will be.

Wow, I found a kindred spirit! HMC is one of my most favourite films of all time! It just brings me so much joy, I even read the original books of HMC 😀

I’m not embarrassed to admit I was in love with fictional animated Howl for some time in the past 😂

Haha you are not alone. Christian Bale's voice gave Howl life <3. I couldn't help it either.

@kiara I refuse to watch anime dubbed, so Kimura Takuya made Howl for me. 😍

Really? I'm surprised to hear that you rarely find people who have seen Miyazaki films. He has internationally acclaim and Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. But for sure, there's a lot of great work in the world that hasn't been seen by many people, no matter how popular it may be. I would find it more surprising if anyone has watched Makoto Shinkai's films. He has received a lot of well-deserved attention because his recent film, Your Name, achieved the second-largest gross for a domestic film in Japan after Spirited Away.

I've only seen a few of Miyazaki's films, but Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle are definitely my favorites! There are some scenes in both films that are truly impressive and haunting.

I’m also surprised @ilovecoffee&rain find Miyazaki viewers rare. I saw spirited away and howl’s moving castle in US mainstream theater at the time of initial release. It was full house in large theater and not in Asian districts.

Actually, the only animated films people watch in my country are hollywood ones. Very few people know about gems like miyazaki films. I was one of the lucky ones to watch such masterpieces. I have seen almost all the studio ghibli films. They are awesome!

I hope NJH can rise from the ashes of BOTWG. That drama was pathetic. I haven't watched Han Ji Min so I cannot say anything about her. I think this drama could be comedic gold and moving at the same time. I know Oppa has potential and I pray to God that this project brings out the best in him.

I like the PD. Kim Hye-ja is great. I’m a new fan of Han Ji Min after Familiar Wife. Nam Joo-Hyuk? No, thank you.

I know the storyline is about the female lead rapidly aging but she’s supposed to start out at 25 and the male lead at 26. Nam Joo-Hyuk as older than Han Ji Min? Come on casting directors.

Kim Hye-ja ❤ Han Ji-min is OK for me, but Nam Joo-hyuk seems to be better with actress around his age. If they must cast younger actor than Han Ji-min, Park Hyung-sik is a better choice in my opinion.

Nevertheless, I'll be watching this drama for Kim Hye-ja and this PD.

I dunno. I think Nam Joo Hyuk works best when they want him to be more than just good looking. So if they're casting him with an actual personality in mind for the character, I'm interested and wanna see.

I've always liked Han Ji Min a lot so I'm here for this and this plot sounds fun. I know of Kim Hye Ja but I can't remember if I've seen her in anything or not.

Huh? Han Ji-min is almost 36 and clearly doesn't look or sound like a 25-year-old. I'm confused.

The k-drama version of Miss Granny is also slated to air in early 2019.

My thoughts exactly, like she’s young for her age but definitely not 25 yo young. Couldn’t they pick someone closer to character’s age?

She’s 12 yrs older than NJH. I don’t understand. Couldn’t they get an older lead actor or younger lead actress? 😳

Is it bad of me to say that I find both equally bland? Honestly, I liked NJH in Cheese in the Trap, and loved him in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo, but I'm also aware of his limitations as an actor. Putting em' together would do neither of them justice. But then again, I could be proven wrong *fingerscrossed* - here's hoping they do well!

No, I used to find HJM very bland too.

I remember in the past I got irritated by her because she was very bland and not a very good actress, but kept being cast against first class actors. (Seriously! Check her filmography!)

But nowadays she has developed a warmth and ease and groundedness which feels to come from experience, if not from actual acting skills.

That is why I put her quite above NJH.

Ah she's definitely a better actor than NJH, no doubt about it, but I've never really warmed to her for some reason. Would help to check out some of her more recent stuff I guess, the last time I saw her was in Cain and Abel I think, which *yikes* was a long time ago! Thanks for updating me. ^^

She's awesome in Plan Man. Detective K she did amazing in that movie too! I started liking her since Cain and Abel. That Hyde drama was a male centric one though. Her portrayal there may not meet anyone's standard but i don't think she is bland. She has gained trust from the producers and many actors wanting to work with her probably because of her personality and her versatility as an actress which only a few possess (according to a director she worked with). But anyways....we do have different standard. Surely you do have the right to say what you wanted to say about her. PEACE!

The reason for the prejudices is that Han Ji Min is not an imposed player like Jun Ji Hyun or Gong Hyo Jin. But it's okay for me. Because he has a successful acting and career. Besides, she's a beautiful woman. And it certainly shows younger than age. For this reason the room noona dongsaeng can perform the relationship.
