Thirty But Seventeen: Episodes 13-14

Woo-jin is aware that somehow, Seo-ri has managed to pierce his heart. She’s brought out feelings that he’s never had, including jealousy, but he manages to get under her skin when he misbehaves. Seo-ri pushes back, evidence of how much she’s grown up and it turns out that she’s not the only one who’s changing. In fact, change is in the air for everyone as Seo-ri’s promised month in the secret room is about to come to an end.

EPISODE 13: “One Clear Day”

Woo-jin watches the rain fall on his skylight as he tries to think of a happy and comfortable experience. All his thoughts are of Seo-ri because his scariest and happiest moments are somehow tied to her.

In a flashback, we see that Woo-jin confessed this conflict to his doctor. As he remembered Seo-ri’s many comments about his emotional distance, he admitted that somehow, she managed to make him care.

In the present, Woo-jin stares at the skylight and recalls the sunny day when Seo-ri opened that window. He stares at her photo on his camera and recalls that he told his doctor, “Strangely, I can’t seem to block her out. She keeps calling me out of my comfort zone.”

Woo-jin walks downstairs and finds Seo-ri in tears as she peels onions. He thinks of his final words to his doctor, “She makes me want to break out of it. She makes me want to stop living like this.”

Seo-ri is about to wipe her eyes when Woo-jin grabs her hand and warns, “I don’t think you should wipe with that hand.” She denies that she’s crying and turns away but Woo-jin gently turns her face towards his and tenderly wipes away her tears. As they gaze at one another, Woo-jin inches closer as if to kiss Seo-ri until he knocks over a bowl of onions.

The spell broken, Woo-jin and Seo-ri clean up the mess but when he rubs his eyes, he falls down in blind agony. Seo-ri scolds, “I told you not to touch your eyes with your onion-covered hands,” and manages to rub her own eyes in the process. Deok-gu watches from his doghouse as Seo-ri and Woo-jin stumble around blindly and knock over more onions.

After rinsing out their eyes, Seo-ri and Woo-jin return to the living room and laugh. Woo-jin reminds her that fresh air helps so they move to the garden. Seo-ri asks why Woo-jin came downstairs and he admits that he wanted to thank her properly since her idea to use the rosin rescued the company.

Woo-jin’s admission gives Seo-ri the courage to confess that she lied about her tears, they had nothing to do with the onions. Tae-rin’s concert reminded her that if nothing had happened, she could have had been on a stage like that.

Woo-jin tries to ask what she means but he’s rattled when Seo-ri steps very close to him. He starts to close his eyes as if to kiss but Seo-ri stops when she pulls a blossom from his hair. She then wanders over to a tree and marvels, “It got so big.”

Seo-ri finds a rock that’s covered with painted numbers and explains that she planted that tree with her father on her seventh birthday. He recorded their heights on the rock and every year after that he measured not only her, but the tree as well.

Seo-ri stares up at the mature tree and tells Woo-jin, “It was twenty-three years ago. It grew so much in that time. I didn’t grow at all.” Together, they watch as the tree’s blossoms are carried away by a breeze.

In the morning, Jennifer calls Chan to breakfast but his room is empty. She can’t believe that he left without food and as she turns to leave, something on the wall catches her eye. She grabs a marker and lightning flashes as she approaches Chan’s wall.

There’s lightning in the sky over Hae-bum and Deok-soo, who watch from shore as Chan practices in the rain. Chan rows alone and recalls that he showed Chick Junior a sign with his motto, “Don’t think, feel,” and shared his plan to confess to Seo-ri.

Chan’s friends agree that these days he’s like a different person. They worry that he’ll get sick if he continues with such intense training.

Chan isn’t the only one acting unusual because when Hyun winds up for a “dab” outside of the offices, he’s surprised when Woo-jin joins in. Hee-soo witnesses Woo-jin’s move and asks herself, “He’s gone crazy, right?”

Already at work misting the plants, Seo-ri blushes when Woo-jin walks in, the memory of their “almost kiss” fresh in her mind. Once Woo-jin is safely in his office, she aims the spray bottle at her face to cool off.

Hee-soo barges in on Woo-jin while he brews some coffee and demands to know if he won the lottery. She points out that his “dab” is so unlike him that she’s convinced he no longer needs to work and already booked a flight to Croatia.

Woo-jin assures Hee-soo that he’s not going anywhere but offers no explanation for his good mood. After Woo-jin walks away, Hee-soo wonders, “What’s with him?”

A man in a flamboyant suit sashays into Hee-soo’s offices. He snaps his fingers in Hyun’s face to request a coffee and then sits to discuss a fashion show with Hee-soo. MR. PARK tosses a bag on his seat onto the floor but it belongs to Seo-ri so she rushes over to retrieve it. Up close, she confuses a mole on Mr. Park’s face for a piece of dried seaweed.

Hee-soo and Hyun cringe when Mr. Park mistakes the word seaweed for a similar word that means “handsome” and acts like she just paid him a compliment. The designer finds Seo-ri charming and after he takes in her lithe, model-like figure, he announces, “I’d be interested in using you.”

Hee-soo steps in front of Seo-ri protectively and invites Mr. Park to leave with a promise to send him her concept. She rejects his request to kiss like the French and ends their meeting with a proper bow. Mr. Park promises to email some samples on his way out but not before he deliberately leaves his phone behind.

Once Mr. Park is gone, Hee–soo explodes, “That jerk!” Hyun chimes in, “I hate him so much. I hate him more every time I see him.” Seo-ri sees the report that she prepared for the music festival and presents it to Hee-soo.

Woo-jin has a follow-up meeting with his clients but a reference book that he shows them is actually about female pop idols. He calls Hyun, who rushes out and leaves Seo-ri alone with two bowls of ramen. Alone in the office when Mr. Park’s phone rings, Seo-ri is the one who answers it.

After the meeting, Hyun begs Woo-jin not to tell Hee-soo about the mix-up. When he gets the email from Mr. Park, it’s missing the promised attachments and Hyun complains the mistake adds to the designer’s already terrible reputation. Worried about Hyun’s unprofessional attitude, Woo-jin offers to take over the project.

Woo-jin calls Mr. Park to ask for the missing files, surprised when Seo-ri answers. She explains that she’s on her way to return the designer’s phone and he overhears her ask for the location of a bar before she hangs up.

Woo-jin grows concerned when Hyun confides that Hee-soo got angry when Mr. Park claimed Seo-ri looked like a model and asked for a goodbye kiss. Without a word, he jumps out of the car and heads for the bar that Seo-ri mentioned.

As soon as Hae-bum and Deok-su step off their bus, Ri-an shoves certificates for a buffet into their hands so that she can be alone with Chan. Ri-an reminds Chan that he promised her a meal for helping Seo-ri but he completely forgot. She sees how tired he looks and sends him home but determined to keep his promise, Chan offers to treat Ri-an to anything she wants.

Seo-ri returns Mr. Park’s phone and informs him that Woo-jin called. He invites her to join him for dinner to talk about work and when she protests, Mr. Park calls Hee-soo for permission.

When Seo-ri asks to speak with Hee-soo herself, Mr. Park waves her away and hangs up. He relays a message from Hee-soo, “She says you can get off work right after you eat,” and snaps his fingers at the waiter for service.

Seo-ri digs in to her meal but Mr. Park wants her to have some wine. He raises his glass and announces, “Cheers,” surprised when Woo-jin clinks his glass. Woo-jin explains that he came for the missing files and gulps down the wine.

At their own dinner, Chan’s pasta reminds him of a cream-colored dress that Ri-an gave to Seo-ri. Her happiness over having Chan all to herself wanes as he lists Seo-ri’s most flattering outfits and wonders, “How did you manage to choose outfits that look so good on her?”

Back at the bar, Mr. Park tries to get Seo-ri to drink some wine but she admits that the only alcohol she’s ever had is soju. Woo-jin empties her glass while Mr. Park suggests visiting Seo-ri’s favorite bar for soju the next time they meet.

Woo-jin suddenly notices the mark on Mr. Park’s face and Seo-ri explains that it’s a mole. Woo-jin thought it was a booger and Mr Park tries to hide his irritation as he laughs, “Why would I put a booger there?”

When Mr. Park takes a bathroom break, Woo-jin asks Seo-ri why she didn’t leave once she returned the phone. She admits that was her plan until Hee-soo told her to stay for dinner.

A call to Hee-soo confirms Mr. Park’s deception but Woo-jin hangs up before she can ask why he’s with their client. Hyun informs her that Woo-jin took over the project when he learned how much they dislike Mr. Park.

Hyun praises Woo-jin’s professionalism and points out, “He never neglects work because of women. And he never causes trouble by getting too drunk.” But that’s exactly what’s happening as Woo-jin empties a bottle of hot sauce into Mr. Park’s wine glass.

Mr. Park runs into Seo-ri outside of the bathroom and approaches her with a private suggestion, “How about we…”

When Mr. Park returns to the table, Woo-jin announces, “Bottoms-up,” and the men empty their glasses. Seo-ri returns as Mr. Park chokes on his drink and she snaps her fingers in his face. Woo-jin chuckles when she reminds Mr. Park that he did that earlier and she assumed it was a new trend.

Seo-ri drops a bag of ramen on the table and with Mr. Park unable to interrupt, she explains to Woo-jin, “Mr. Park asked, ‘Do you want to eat some ramen together?'” He knows exactly what that means and there’s not a shred of professionalism left as Woo-jin fumes, “This son of a bitch.”

The rising tension dissipates when Woo-jin and Mr. Park hear what sounds like a curse coming from Seo-ri, “Oh, Sibelius.” She informs them it’s the name of the composer of the music coming from the bar’s speakers.

Mr. Park invites Woo-jin and Seo-ri to finish dinner without him and he leaves without the ramen. Seo-ri wonders what she did wrong but Woo-jin explains that she did something right because men who ask about ramen are up to no good and she’s to ignore them.

Seo-ri announces it’s time to leave and Woo-jin follows her out, but not before he stops at the bar to ask a woman if he can borrow her umbrella. Out on the sidewalk, Woo-jin joins Seo-ri and opens a tiny drink umbrella over his head, in case it snows.

EPISODE 14: “I Want My Time Back”

His cheeks bright, Woo-jin hold the tiny umbrella over his head and wanders off. At the office, Hee-soo corrects Hyun’s mistaken impression that Woo-jin never causes trouble when he’s drunk because she knows alcohol makes him weirder than usual.

Woo-jin hides behind a tree trunk until Seo-ri catches him but when he manages to get loose, he runs away at top speed. It matches what Hee-soo tells Hyun, “When he gets drunk, he hides like crazy and runs away with all his might.”

Seo-ri has a hold of Woo-jin’s cuff even though he denies that he’s drunk. He promises not to run away again but Seo-ri has no intention of letting him go until they’re home. Woo-jin manages to slip out of his shirt and runs away with Seo-ri in pursuit.

Woo-jin runs all the way to a park and enters a soccer enclosure that he calls home. He plops himself on the ground and when Seo-ri tries to help him up, Woo-jin wonders why she’s in his room. He asks, “Did you drink again,” and repeats what he said the night she slept in his bed, “This was your room until thirteen years ago,” and then he passes out.

Seo-ri considers leaving Woo-jin there all night but instead she stretches out next to him and stares at his flushed face. The music that comes through on the park’s speakers is the piece that she played for the competition when her aunt and uncle cheered from the audience. As the music plays, Seo-ri breathes to herself, “I want to turn back time.”

At the grocery store, Jennifer notices a husband fuss over his very pregnant wife and it triggers a flashback. The year was 2005 as a pregnant and distraught Jennifer walked alone in the rain while the ballerina music box fell from her hand.

A man with an umbrella ran to her and exclaimed, “Goodness, you’re drenched. Please take my umbrella.” With tears in her eyes, Jennifer started to walk away from Seo-ri’s uncle but he led her to a shelter. He returned the music box to her hand, urged Jennifer to rest and left his umbrella behind as he ran into the rain. When a young man bumped into her, Jennifer looked up at the Hyein Library.

In the store, Jennifer’s eyes well with tears until she hears an announcement for a half price watermelon. She and another woman reach it at the same time but the woman is no match for Jennifer, who stares her down and walks away with the discounted melon.

Seo-ri leaves a note at the park, “I’ll return it soon,” and hauls Woo-jin home in a cart. She huffs and puffs and complains about everything that Woo-jin has put her through. She gets home at the same time as Jennifer, who sniffs the air and realizes that Woo-jin is wasted.

Jennifer approaches the cart as Seo-ri lists her many complaints — he kept running away, he won’t move and she doesn’t know his phone’s passcode. Seo-ri watches in amazement as Jennifer takes a deep breath and approaches the unconscious Woo-jin.

An exhausted Chan walks home but when he sees Seo-ri he runs up to ask, “Why are you pulling a cart in the middle of the night.” She explains that she used it to get Woo-jin home and the next thing you know, Chan is pulling the cart as he sympathizes that Seo-ri couldn’t know that his uncle can’t drink.

Chan offers Seo-ri a ride and when she protests, he lies that it would give him a chance to make up for a missed workout. Once she’s in the cart, Chan begins to run and this time it’s Seo-ri who suffers. When she yells that she’s about to throw up, Chan thinks she wants to go faster and speeds up.

In the morning, Woo-jin pulls out his car key along with the drink umbrella. Suddenly, he remembers his drunken escapades and wonders how he got home. Seo-ri slips into the passenger seat and angrily informs him that he owes her a ride.

Woo-jin smells a pain patch so Seo-ri explains that she smells like a pain patch and is late to work because of him. The bicker back and forth and when Woo-jin asks why she’s switched to banmal, she orders, “Let’s go.”

Hee-soo sets a bag on Seo-ri’s desk and then overhears Mr. Park scream over the phone to Hyun that he’ll never work with them again. She yells back, “Okay, then. Don’t,” and hangs up while Hyun concludes that even Woo-jin can’t deal with a man like Mr. Park.

Still worried about Woo-jin’s behavior, Hee-soo gets a call about a new project that he just accepted. Woo-jin confirms the new project when he arrives with Seo-ri and confesses that it’s to make up for Mr. Park’s cancelled fashion show.

Hyun smells a pain patch and wonders why it’s so strong. Seo-ri confesses that it’s hers and stares at Woo-jin. He leaves to meet with the new client and Hyun wonders why he didn’t go there directly. Hee-soo watches them attentively and after she recalls how Woo-jin reacted when she hired Seo-ri, she realizes that there’s something going on between them.

Seo-ri notices the bag on her desk and Hee-soo explains that it’s a thank you gift from an handbag designer. She offers it to an overjoyed Seo-ri while Hyun tries to remember when they worked with a handbag designer.

Hee-soo contacts Tae-rin with a better understanding of the festival thanks to Seo-ri’s report. She offers to have Seo-ri discuss music with her but Tae-rin declines. After they hang up, Tae-rin recalls her first meeting with Seo-ri. Tae-rin admitted that she’d seen Seo-ri at competitions but was stunned that Seo-ri didn’t even know that she was a violinist.

On the drive home, her mother insisted that if Tae-rin had been perfect the conductor would never have given special attention to a regular high school student like Seo-ri. The poor girl nervously picked at her thumb, a habit that the grown-up Tae-rin still has. Her phone chirps with a text from her mother who compliments her recent performance and tells her how proud she is.

After their meet, Chan’s friends ask to visit because they miss Mr. Gong, Deok-gu and Jennifer’s food. Chan sends them to his house without him because he’s on his way to workout. They protest that they never see him anymore and insist that he’s already good enough for first place. Chan won’t be dissuaded and as he walks away, Deok-soo wonders when he became so mature.

Chan sees Seo-ri across the street and runs across the bridge to her. He pretends that he was just walking by even though he’s sweating and breathing heavily.

Chan explains that he’s on his way to practice and Seo-ri comments on his intense schedule. He confides that he has something important to do after he places first in the nationals. Seo-ri tells him that she’s certain he’ll achieve his goal and Chan runs off to practice after they cheer, “Don’t think, feel!”

Seo-ri notices that the banner for a missing elderly woman is still up. She tries to ignore what she heard about abandoned patients at her hospital and jots down a number for a banner company.

Seo-ri gets home just as the potential buyers of the house are escorted out by Jennifer and the housekeeper notices her disappointment. In her room, Seo-ri holds Deok-gu while she stares at a calendar and sees that her month is almost over, even though she’s no closer to finding her aunt and uncle.

Hyung-tae struggles to stay awake while on duty when he gets a call from Seo-ri’s hospital. He’s told that her donor continues to send money and is asked if he knows who it could be. The only thing Hyung-tae knows for sure is that the donor isn’t her uncle.

Chan’s alarm wakes him early, even though it’s the weekend. He confesses to his chick that he wants to sleep another ten minutes but wakes up when he notices that Jennifer corrected the spelling on his sign, “Don’t think, feel!”

Motivated, Chan drops to the floor for push-ups but he falls in shock when his chick emerges looking more like a teenager. He gushes that he’s proud of his chick and promises that he’ll be great as well.

Jennifer catches Woo-jin before he leaves for work and informs him that the realtor spoke with his father and the house will soon be sold. Woo-jin admits that he only asked for a one month delay and looks over at Seo-ri’s room. Jennifer follows his gaze and is about to ask a question before she announces it’s none of her business.

Woo-jin informs Jennifer that they’ll move to Chan’s house nearby. She asks if she needs to pack the storage room but Woo-jin promises to take care of it himself.

Woo-jin approaches the storage room and in spite of his fears, he manages to go inside. He opens some boxes and when he looks at some old awards, the charm from Seo-ri’s backpack falls to the floor. Before he can retrieve it (or suffer from another flashback), Hee-soo calls to remind him about his meeting.

Woo-jin walks out and closes the door, which sends a box from a top shelf tumbling to the floor. His painting of Seo-ri spills out as the door opens a crack.

Woo-jin arrives for his meeting and as he waits for his client, he notices that the music in the restaurant is the same as the music from the soccer enclosure. Even though he was drunk, Woo-jin opened his eyes and heard Seo-ri’s confession, “I want to turn back time.”

Seo-ri runs out to the tree that she planted with her father and retrieves the rock to take with her. Deuk-gu runs into the open storage room and when Seo-ri follows him, she sees her painting covered in muddy paw prints. While she stares at it, Woo-jin puzzles over why Seo-ri would want to turn back time.

COMMENTS

As Seo-ri’s month in her secret room winds down, I want to know what’s going to happen to Deok-gu, or is it Fang? That little dog got a new lease in life when Seo-ri returned and I can’t bear to think of him enduring a doggie depression if she’s forced to strike out on her own. In fact, Woo-jin’s entire household will never be the same if the house is sold and she’s forced to leave. Chan is in the middle of training for the nationals and Woo-jin is slowly, but surely, loosening up. This is a case where the sum is greater than the parts, they all bring out the best in one another. Most of the time.

Woo-jin’s drunken antics certainly brought out the bear in Seo-ri, who unfortunately has no idea that he saved her from a predatory peacock by the name of Mr. Park. Woo-jin served as her black knight and drank all of that wine so that Seo-ri couldn’t, because getting her drunk was what that slimy designer was going for. As much as Seo-ri has grown-up, she’s still incredibly naive, a perfect target for someone who wants to take advantage of her. Instead of complaining about all of the trouble that Woo-jin caused, and boy did he run her around, Seo-ri should thank him profusely.

The plot is taking it’s time to unfold but it hasn’t felt at all slow thanks to all of the side plots and characters. That said, I’m more that ready for Woo-jin to discover that Seo-ri was the girl who caught his eye all those years ago. It’s time, and I hope that little furry matchmaker, Deok-gu, manages to be the one to bring his two favorite people together. It certainly looks that way thanks to his detour into the storage shed, but as promising as that plot development could be, I’ve been disappointed before. There’s been one close call after another in Thirty But Seventeen so I know better than to get my hopes up.

The clues in these episodes had to do with Seo-ri’s uncle and we learned not only that he has a connection to Jennifer (who doesn’t at this point?) but that he isn’t Seo-ri’s secret donor. That fact came from Seo-ri’s old schoolfriend/now neurosurgeon, Hyung-Tae, who seems to be the one person who knows what happened to her uncle. At first I imagined that her uncle was involved in something shady but most of the glimpses of the man have been positive. I’m beginning to wonder if he died while Seo-ri was in her coma or maybe he ended up in prison, because he was mixed up in something when he faked that business trip to Japan.

Jennifer is the one thread that seems to tie everyone together. She was pregnant before Seo-ri’s accident but it looks as if something went terribly wrong. Did she gravitate to the library while she worked through a loss and is that why she’s a walking encyclopedia? Her connection definitely has something to do with Seo-ri’s friends and family but what I can’t figure out is why hasn’t Jennifer managed to bring Seo-ri and Hyung-tae together? She seems to know so much so surely she knows that Hyung-tae could be one to answer all of Seo-ri’s questions. It’s time to get some answers before Seo-ri is forced to leave the house that she grew up in, the only place in the world that feels like home.

This episode is full of cuteness!! Cute drunk scene, he's running, even greeting jennifer and telling her he's had his dinner.😂
I'm just so in love with the cuteness the two leads have in this drama. Woojin is ♥. Poor Seori didn't know about the ramyeon thing and Woojin was like "wtf this jerk!" and how sweet of him to tell Seori about the ramyeon thing in a not so direct manner "if any guy told you to have ramyeon with them, ignore it".
I just love Woojin's unknowing concern for Seori. This was like that time he was screaming her name like crazy because he thought Seori is going to work at a bar. These two are both so innocent and pure, I love them.😍

Thank you for the recap! This show is not amazing or revolutionary, but something, SOMETHING, makes me like it so much. I was so fond of Chan. But now that Woojin has had more screentime, Im understanding him more and loving him more.

While jennifer may be the seed that connects everyone together (seed, is that the expression?), seori is definitely the heart. Her optimism is so refreshing.. and her unknowingly getting back at the asshat was so satisfying.

So, in Korean "eating ramen" is a euphemism for hooking up.

The ramen joke is any variation of a character asking someone to "eat ramen" and the person interpreting it literally - in this case going and buying them ramen.

It always cracks me up and in this case I was LMAO.

When i thought lowered-guard Woo Jin was so cute, then we were given drunk Woo Jin. His drunk habit are one of the cutest in KDrama. The umbrella, the running away, and the sleep on the field? I'll probably die of happiness if i were witnessed it first hand like Soo Ri (after taking a video of those moment)
Now Woo Jin has lowered his guard and Chan has realised his feeling, the romance were so great and it seems like Seo Ri will realise her feeling soon, and the third guy will enter their life.
Let the square love begin.
I feel bad for the girl who like Chan, she looked sincere. I hope she will have her love returned, probably by staying on Chan's side when he is broken hearted later.

I saw on the news that Korea has a NASTY heat wave right now! Kudos to the actors running through the park in that heat!!! Woo Jin’s serious face running really made me laugh. Though it also reveals his natural tendency to run away as a child, but in an amusing manner.

One more question, maybe some beanies can help me with theorizing. Do you think it’s important that they showed a clip of Hyein Library, and then our OTP was lying on the tennis court at Hyein Park? Have there been any other nuggets? I know they’ve talked about the redevelopment every now and then and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that nothing is ever just a “random coincidence” in dramaland. Everyone is related and star crossed lovers from birth (Just kidding about the last part. Kinda. Not really).

I didn't notice that they were in Hyein Park-- good catch. There might be more to that connection, or it could just be that Jennifer was living in that same neighborhood back then.

What I did notice was that Jennifer's flashback was from 2005-- the same year as SR's accident. Since it was raining during both the bus crash scene and Jennifer's flashback, it occurred to me that maybe Jennifer lost her husband in the accident, too. So I went back to ep.1 to check, and it is quite possible that that's what happened as the other fatality they mentioned was a 38-year-old male named Kim Tae-jin. Also, there was a brief scene of Hyung-tae running towards the hospital, bumping into a woman in a red coat who was getting out of a taxi, and losing his shoe in the process. It was hard to tell, but it looked like the woman in the red coat might be Jennifer.

In any case, she obviously has a very sad story-- my heart went out to her when I saw her tear up at the memory of whatever happened to her.

i had exact same thought that Its Jenifer's husband died in that bud accident.
Also to add:
1. when we saw jenifer in black outfit it was SR Uncle who offered her umbrell and led her to shed.
2. and then she bumped onto a boy with umbrella which i observed to be young GWJ.....
so may it was the day SR uncle came looking for SR's friend in funeral home, also GWJ came to see SM in same funeral home. Still not sure how accurate it is. but i am guessing it.

The hospital scene makes sense because in the episode where Seo-ri stows away, she recognized the name of the hospital the performers were going to being the hospital in her neighborhood. So, Jennifer had to have lived near them and it makes so much sense that the man killed on the bus was her husband. Jennifer may also be the mystery benefactor, but not sure why she would still be sending the care facility money if she knows Seo-to isn’t there.

There’s still the mystery about the uncle too. Which I care more about than I thought I would. He does seem like a stand-up person, so I hope his disappearance isn’t due to something uncouthe.

Jennifer may have been closer to Seo-ri than we know. Maybe she overheard what happened to her in the hospital—something may have happened to the aunt and uncle and somehow Jennifer was made Seo-ri’s gaurdian. The robot exterior she has is a perfect cover for the emotionally draining life she’s had.

I don't remember that part about SR recognizing the name of the hospital, so I'm glad you paid attention and found another piece of the puzzle that seems to fit. If that was Jennifer that Hyung-tae bumped into, I'm guessing they'll connect in the hospital thanks to the shoe he left behind during his mad dash.

I used to think Jennifer might be the mystery benefactor, too. This is such a long shot that I'm hesitant to even mention it, but perhaps the benefactor who doesn't know that SR is no longer in the hospital is Woo-jin. If he had the identity of the two girls mixed up, and thought that Soo-mi (who he thinks is named Seo-ri) was in a coma and needed help with the medical bills, I can see him paying the bills secretly as a form of penance. I don't know where he would've gotten the money to do that when he was younger-- but his family's rich, so it's not impossible. (Like I said, this guess is a looong shot.)

Do we know if the benefactor has been paying SR's bills all along? And what about the guy in the hoodie who used to peek into SR's hospital room? Do we know anything about him yet?

So many mysteries lurking in our yummy hot chocolate!

This show is eeeeveeeeryyyytinggg!!! It's cute and funny, but also emotional. I love the characters, I love how they're changing, I love that everything seems to be thoroughly thought out. I just hope that no threads are left untied before we reach the final episode. There are still so many unanswered questions, but I hope next week will bring at least some answers.
Also, the ramyeon gag left me in stitches! Oh, how naive our Seo-ri is, bless her!

I can't really explain what it is about this show, but I just love it so much. I love all the characters; Woo Jin finally opening his heart to someone, Seo Ri's earnest kindness and innocence, Chan's sincerity and his adorable-but-ill-fated puppy dog love, the whole mystery of Jennifer, Chan's two hilarious side kicks. I love everyone's chemistry and how they already feel like a big family, even if she's only been with them for a month.
I also ship Woo Jin and Seo Ri like there's no tomorrow, even if I do feel bad for Chan. We know his first love is sincere and very endearing, but also that it isn't going anywhere, which makes it painful to watch.

I wish we'd get a little more development soon with the doctor who's been taking care of her, it's so frustrating that misunderstandings keep them from meeting.

This one drama is like perfect Cotton Candy, with its share of fluff and sweetness. i never imagined that i'd love it this much despite the fact i hate female actresses who overact when try to act lesser their age.
This drama has all usual kdrama plots and cliches but all are done so brilliantly and beautifully to not to bore us. i love each n every moment i watch it.

Story wise... i guess we are at good pace.things are simple yet mysterious enough to stick with it till we know who that yellow heal lady is, where is SR uncle, and how n when WJ will realize his name confusion mistake of past.. and lot more.
I am so looking forward to coming episode.

SHS.. i hv found an extraordinary actress now to keep an eye for her.
YSJ... his smile is like 100000 watt bulb in my room which just enlightens my day brighter than ever. i want to see his smile even more.

Thanks for lovely recap.

More mystery and a delayed romance. I feel like all the circumstances preventing full disclosure of Seo ri’s accident and coma to Woo Jin feel very contrived and not at all organic to the story, like Jennifer walking in at the exact moment Seo Ri would have picked up the box and seen her painting and the little toy that used to be on her backpack. Or Hyung tae and Seo Ri just missing each other when she cleaned his apartment.

Also more mystery... who is Jennifer’s child? My guess is leaning towards either Seo Ri or Woo Jin, but we’ll wait and see. Still it’s a very poignant, moving and charming drama with lots of character growth and the actors are playing the heck out of their roles.

I assumed that Jennifer lost the baby and had just found out, although it would have been later in the pregnancy since she looked at least 6 months pregnant, or later even. So this part doesn’t really make sense to me because if she was that pregnant and lost the baby, she would have likely been in early labor and in the hospital and if she was walking here, it would have been after she recovered from the loss. But I’m not an OB, so maybe a baby can die this late and you can retain it in your body for a while. Or I could be misinterpreting the entire scene.

I assumed as much re Jennifer's baby. That it sort of stopped developing (it can happen) and she just found out the news. But after reading some other comments I'm pretty sure that she was mourning the loss of her husband who died in the same bus crash. We'll just have to wait and see! I trust this writer to do a good job connecting all the pieces.

Oh, this show has no plot. In fact, it's the small vague attempts to have plot this episode (the childhood friend, the conductor, yellow shoes) that felt like weird digressions that shouldn't be there.

I'm alone in not liking the drunk scene. It just felt like another way to have characters run around for half an episode to kill time and this brand of humour isn't really my thing.

But there's something about the characters - especially Seo-ri, Woo-jin and Chan - that makes me want to watch them do very little. Also, unlike a certain recent plotless show, I feel like there's a lot of forward momentum on the characterisation side. And that is carrying the show at the moment.

I disagree. I do believe there is a plot, threadbare, but there is a plot. Finding her uncle, finding her friend, grieving the death of the friend that died, finally recognizing the boy she knew. All these are part of the plot to ultimately bring them to a satisfying slightly(haha) grown up relationship. I also agree that the characterizations are fantastic. There has been enormous growth in all the individual characters. Now I need growth in the story, lol.

I know, I know, you are right. She's actually lucky to find people who don't make decisions for her.

2

I don't particularly care for the drunk scene. Because kdramas has one (except high school ones, and even those don't always escape it, though it's not drunk kids usually) and they are a just way too inconvenient plot device. I'm so bored of them. :-/

I rarely find them realistic either – they are either rather fake or over/badly acted. (In this case, fake.)

(I do generally enjoy the show, flaws and all.)

This is the episode when Mr. Gong has officially trumped Chan for me. I think we now know where Chan got his awesome bubbly personality from. Mr. Gong when he’s not bottling up his heart is pure love. When he’s drunk, he is seriously hilarious.

Now I’m really curious how they are going to address when Mr. Gong finds out.

Actually, I misspoke. The song that plays after Humouresque is her audition piece and the piece she plays in the hotel lobby the next episode, not the Sibelius. Thank you, thank you, thank you @ally-le, for identifying Dvořák's "Humoresque No. 7 in G-flat Major, Op. 101"! I instantly recognized the melody, but never knew the name of the piece. @ally-le seriously, over Verdi? Oooooh, I don't like Verdi 😖 But I thought we were friends already 😊

2

You helped me out! I’m not a fan of opera...the only two I’ve seen (or even bothered to listen to) is Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Verdi’s Macbeth. But La Traviarta I recognized, but couldn’t come up with the name.

2

@bbstl, @ally-le,

Thanks for your help, Ladies!

The only opera I've heard live was Mozart's "The Magic Flute" when I studied in Hamburg. In college, I used to get student rush tickets to the wonderful stagings of Gilbert & Sullivan by the Light Opera Of Manhattan (LOOM). As a kid, I loved a narrated children's recording of Bizet's "Carmen." (Thanks, Mom!) "The Toreador Song" is still a fave. As a New Englander, I grew up with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, and got to hear them live a couple of times.

2

Thumbs up for Mozart operas! But most people love Verdi.

I just heard the neatest story about Aretha Franklin, told by Grace Bumbry (opera star). Pavarotti was supposed to sing Nessun Dorma from Puccini's Turandot at the 1998 Grammys and he was too sick to sing at the last minute, so Aretha Franklin stepped in and sang it. She had a four-octave range and sang a lot of opera, mostly out of the public eye.
She was a very great lady, I'm very sorry that we have lost her today 😢❤️💐

I'd love to listen to Grace Bumbry's story about Aretha-- do you know if I can access it online?

This drama has a lot in common with Yang Se Jong's last drama (Temperature of Love), which I HATED. One of the only dramas I didn't make it all the way through, to be honest. The similarities are that neither had much of a plot but were centered mostly on misunderstandings and "fate", and both have too many random side issues that are jarring rather than serving as cohesive elements that add to the whole. That said, this drama is so much better in one VERY important way...the characters in this are all actually likable. Temperature of Love had about the most unlikable characters I've ever seen!!! I stopped caring about that show because I was not rooting for any of them to have a happy ending. THIS drama is full of equally flawed characters, but they are characters who are actively trying to become better people. They are growing up, and we are watching the process unfold. I could complain about the aimlessness of all of these episodes, but I won't because I've enjoyed these characters so much that I don't really care that the plot isn't moving forward. That SAID, they can find out who each other is ANY TIME NOW.

I loved Temperature of Love and the plot was not about fate at all. It was mostly about the difficulties of overcoming personal mental blocks in order to be happy within a couple. For him, it was his unresolved issues with his parents. For her, it was her inability to take the right decision at the right moment. I can understand that the show does appeal to everybody, but for those with whom it resonated, for those like me who were very fond of the characters, it was certainly a beautiful drama.

The phrase "alcohol show who you truly are/ how you really felt inside" is really appliable to Woo-jin. Whenever there is a drunk scene in a drama, honestly I always felt weird and sometimes cringed when they just blurted out everything, especially when it just happened that they were talking about their true feeling to 'the one'. Again, this is honestly one thing I haven't experienced yet, getting drunk and such, so I can't said it first-handly how being drunk feels like, thats why the scene was very "For real?!" for me. But then I watch how Woo-jin reacted to alcohol, and his first instinct was to hide and run from everyone, no matter what. And I don't really find it so hilarious. Isn't that exactly what he felt the whole time after the bus accident? Even when he is forced to come home for work or for Chan, whenever he do what others ask him to do, his true desire is to be alone and hide and runaway from everyone. He hide his painful memories to himself, hide his feeling because he afraid of getting hurt, run away because of his fear of being involved in someone's life and ruin it again. I remember one of my professors lecture in a class, that what you said and how you act doesn't really define who you are, but it is your habit that does, because its the result of your continual acted that you keep doing. It has become Woo-Jin habit to runaway and hide, and when he drunk he can't hide how he is feeling anymore through this 'freak act's. I found this more natural and more real, and not as much as cringey as any other drunk scene I've seen so far.
I also love Woo-Jin and Seo-ri interaction in here, who become more transparent to each other after that peeling onion together session. How they become comfortable to be in each other company, almost look like a real same-age friend. Even tho Seo-ri's mental is still quite a little too teenager.
And oh Chan you sweet boy, please take a break and get some rest. His crush is painful to watch because we already know how it will end, but still cute at the same time I'm so confused between want to cheer on him and want him to just give up already. Just be with me Chan, we are on the same-age, I'm not a Noonaaa.

he was cute doing all that but it was his deep rooted desire to do that...
i just dint add it to my previous comment thinking i might not be right but guess i wasn't reading same perspective here.

It was his real self which he always kept hidden but being drunk he was least bothered abt it anymore... so its such nice way to show how people feel still behave opposite due to secietal pressure or expectations.

Despite my usual preference for grumps, Woo Jin did not make my heart flutter until his mood improved this episode. I have to cut him some slack, of course. He suffers from an emotional trauma, and has to compete with our one and only Chan. ;)

The first scene I loved was the whole onion- garden tree scene. I smiled during the onion incident, because I can totally see that happening in real life, and my heart fluttered by the tree. Right after she picked the petal from his head, our Woo Jin starts stammering cutely, looking around for Seo Ri when she leaves his side and following her to the tree like a puppy (in love) as soon as he spots her there. He reminded me of his younger self and an older, calmer, more mature Chan in that moment. Maybe I read too much into it, but for me it was a subtle way of showing us that he is falling in love with her, which is something I usually find hard to notice whenever I watch K-dramas.

The other scene was the drunk scene. My heart fluttered again, just like Seo Ri’s heart did when Woo Jin turned on his side to face her. Again, showing his growing feelings maybe?

The main reason why I love that scene is because it is a funny and literal interpretation of their relationship. Hee Sun explains that Woo Jin is know to literally hide and run away while drunk, but we already know he does it metaphorically while sober.

Hee Sun is very vocal about this, but just like most characters, she does not actively try to stop that behavior and just lets him run off every time. On the other hand we have Seo Ri, who keeps running after him and even drags him back home and confronts him about it afterwards. So it literally shows us that Woo Jin was right when he told his doctor that he can’t block her out like he does with others.

Forgive my rambling, it is the first time I caught up on an episode around the time the recap got published :)

i guess thats what everyone introvert wants and needs in their life.. one true person who can remain by their side when they are in world out open and also keep an eye on them when they are inside their shell (hiding from the world)...and thats exactly what SR (unknowingly) is for WJ. And for same reason he is unable to block her out of his bubble cause she is not forcing her attention on him rather her gentle ways are allowing WJ to let his guards down,to let her enter his bubble.....

Thank you for your recap and comments, TeriYaki!

What a great episode! I laughed my butt off at Mr. Gong and the aftermath of his valiant defense of Seo-ri's honor against sleazoid fashion designer Park's predation. Seo-ri's literal response to the latter's proposition by buying instant ramyun made my day. Kim Dong-joon's cameo follows on his turns in BLACK and ABOUT TIME (in which he very nicely played a musical theater composer and director). But that outfit. Yikes! Eye bleach, stat!

Maybe I misread that flashback. Was Jenniferrr an aspiring ballerina majoring in philosophy who got pregnant by Seo-ri's Uncle? Or was it a case of mistaken paternity, and Aunt dumped him unjustly? Perhaps Jenniferrr was a neighbor back in the day, or had even been Seo-ri's teen-age babysitter. Her English is excellent, so I suspect that she may have been exiled overseas because of her pregnancy (perhaps by a chaebol heir?). Her Sphinx-like presence really makes me wonder what's going on. Woo-jin's sister hired her, too. How did that come about. I have a feeling it wasn't entirely random.

I'm also wondering what the deal is with Dr. Kim Hyung-tae. Talk about ships passing in the night.

Poor Chan is smitten to the max. It's high time he changes his motto to "Don't feel, think!" lest his tender heart be crushed... and he be struck by lightning while sculling during a thunderstorm. Seriously, Coach, someone has to rein that boy in before he hurts himself. The "midnight ride" he gave Seo-ri to return the cart she'd hauled Mr. Gong home in from the park was a hoot. Ahn Hyo-seop continues to slay me with his gangly earnestness, Jenniferrrr has grown on me unexpectedly, and uri OTP's actors are knocking it out of the ball park with their touching vulnerability. Right about now, uncle and nephew are beyond help. It's only a matter of time before Woo-jin starts doing push-ups, too. ;-)

Thank you, Fang, for getting your muddy pawprints all over Mr. Gong's portrait of Seo-ri. The storeroom has seemed like the equivalent of Binkley's Closet Of Anxieties in the comic strip Bloom County. Lately, however, it appears that Woo-jin is beginning to make peace with his traumatic past. Perhaps by now he would have been a celebrated painter if tragedy hadn't derailed his art.

On my fan wall, I have posted links to Schumann's "Three Romances, Opus 94," which Se-ri played in the hotel lobby, and three OSTs, starting here:

Has anyone else been wondering about the timing of the moon's phases? We seemed to go practically overnight from a waxing quarter moon to the full moon, as viewed through the skylight. Or maybe I've just lost track between the recaps and currently-airing episodes. ;-)

Thanks for the title of the audition and hotel lobby piece! I couldn’t remember it! Senility setting in.

@ally-le,

You're welcome. The title and composer had to have been in the subtitles I read, because there's no way I would have known them. I think Fritz Kreisler was mentioned in passing in the dialogue. After a quick gander at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Kreisler, I could believe that his style of playing inspired Seo-ri.

How well I know that feeling of losing the pointer -- especially with instrumental music I recognize, but whose title I've never heard. It's particularly distressing to a disc jockey, even long after signing off. ;-)

@ally-le,

I may have misunderstood which Kreisler was being referenced. It turns out that Schumann composed "Kreisleriana, Op. 16" and named it after exuberant fictional conductor Johannes Kreisler, brainchild of Prussian Romantic (wow -- that almost sounds like an oxymoron) writer E. T. A. Hoffmann.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kreisleriana

Schumann himself sounds as if he were bipolar. Perhaps there's some symbolism here, especially as it relates to the travails of the OTP's young lives. I can't help but be reminded of all the moon imagery in this show... so it may be a hint at lunacy, for all I know.

Many moons ago I may have caught that reference as well—Kreisler vs. Kreisler—but I just let it pass me by. My brain cells are otherwise engaged now, or I’ve lost the cells that may have been able to enlighten you about this.

I'm with you on the quick turns of the moon. If this really was a month then the moon would NOT have been full the next night.
Then again, isn't it always a full moon in South Korea? It looks that way in almost all the dramas I've watched.

Moon phases confuse me too...i felt like something is missing from this whole one month period seeing moon changing phases so randomly
we need to rewatch it to understand Moon and Month logic.

@stpauligurl, @kdramaswimmer,

Thanks for your reality check regarding the moon. I thought I was losing it. The moon rabbit may be up to something. ;-)

It's been a month so the moon must be... no there's no logic to it. But there is meaning! It was waning because her time in the house was nearly up (I think).

The last view of the moon was full, so technically it will next be gibbous (and therefore waning).

But I somehow get the feeling that the house will be getting a stay of execution.

Oh, wait, wasn't it waning when she was preparing to leave and then full when... no, that was the next episode. No, I got nothing.

When SR's uncle approached Jennifer in the flashback, it didn't seem like he'd known her before, to me at least!

There were some great scenes in this episode. Seo-ri clicking her fingers in front of Mr. Park was such a subtle social commentary. Chan with his chick was adorable. Woo Jin with his drunken antics took my heart. But the cutest was Chan describing frills. It was so cute I might have just flatlined. Chan I want to give you such a big hug and pull your cheeks

What cracked me up as Chan was telling Ri-an how great the donated clothes looked on Seo-ri was his choice of words. He was using food names (cream, salmon) as colors. This is something that I had read was supposedly characteristic of females. On the other hand, he is a perpetually-ravenous growing young athlete, and food is always on his mind. Now I understand why Mom insisted on hiring a housekeeper when he moved in with Mr. Gong.

I was shocked out of my gourd that Chan actually noticed the details on the clothing and could talk about them. He is full of surprises. ;-)

This drama is very cute and it still gets me engaged. Although I also think they are dragging too much the fact that he doesn't know she is the girl he painted.
I also love Chan, and I laughed out loud when he realise the chicken was bigger! 😂😂😂

I kind of think this is how real life would have played out though. It’s a random painting of a random girl that he thinks died 13 years ago, in high school! I’m surprised he would still even have it in his 30’s. There’s a lot of water under that bridge. I could see them falling in love, getting married and then one day she’s cleaning out the garage trying to declutter after the wedding, maybe moving to a new place, and happens to see it. That’s how real life would be. And then realizing he liked her even then.

Yes, I can totally see the story going all the way to marriage without them figuring out the connection. Real life would work out that way. But, yunno, probably not kdrama 😆 The Pororo stickers on the drawing case will give it away or something!

I like what both of you say, and both fo these scenarios! But in real life, though possible, it'd be pretty amazing for them to have reconnected they way they did. Also the fact that his parents bought her house, the whole thing is a pretty k-drama set-up to begin with! And I love it for that! It's oh-so-wonderful all the same!

🤦🏻‍♀️ thud! Hahaha, I was forgetting the entire initial universe of coincidence there, wasn't I? Oy, the consequence of too many kdramas, I now regard all THAT as standard! 🤣

The way that chicken scene was shot was hilarious. It was like one of those post-makeover scenes with the shot from the bottom up.

I see a parallel between Seo-ri and the chicken. I could feel Seo-ri growing up and slowly catching up to her age. And like the baby chick, she will end up growing faster than you expect.

I think I've fallen in love with Yang Se-jong after the way he laughed at Seo-ri explaining why she was snapping her finger at Mole Guy and a after the way he got his face to tick in irritation after Seo-ri told him she got Mole Guy the ramyun because he asked her to eat ramyun with him. I love how Seo-ri and Woo-jin tag-teamed to give Mole Guy a miserable evening.

I like most of the characters - even Chan's clingy classmate and the uncle who seemingly deserted Seo-ri, but wish the drama could do something positive with Rin Kim. Why can't be she quirky and cool?

At this point, I'm thinking that the mysterious benefactor is the man who caused the accident. It would explain why it was anonymous. Although it wasn't completely that guy's fault either, it could serve as a reminder for Woo Jin that he shouldn't blame himself for what happened.

Tae-rin’s concert reminded her that if nothing had happened, she could have had been on a stage like that.

The only thing I'm worried about is that Woo Jin has seen Seo Ri mourning her past so often, and he will definitely feel responsible later. The show might even be moving towards a bigger dose of guilt if he realizes that she was in the accident before figuring out the whole truth.

My favorite thing about this episode is that Chan's Chick Jr. actually grew. It seemed like they'd keep him a chick for the duration, but since I hatch chicks with my kindergarteners, I know they start to grow their grown-up feathers within days after hatching and grow so much each day, so I was amused that Jr. seemed to stay a chick forever in dramaland. Chick's growth was a big 👍 thumbs up for me! 😂
