I’m Not a Robot: Episodes 13-14

It’s a roller coaster of emotions for Min-kyu and Jia as they try to make sense of their increasingly confused feelings. The Santa Maria team gets in on the act with romantic challenges of their own and it feels like spring in the dead of winter. As much as Jia would like to confess that she’s a human, she can’t do that without jeopardizing Santa Maria’s research. That forces her to continue as Aji-3’s stand-in while Min-kyu establishes what he thinks is a necessary distance.

EPISODE 13: “A first kiss tastes of apples”

As Jia’s lips softly touch Min-kyu’s, he narrates how much he’s missed the warmth of another human. He confesses that he imagined his first kiss many times after hearing it compared to the taste of apples or a flower in spring, but he never imagined that it would be with a robot.

Min-kyu jumps away and demands to know why she kissed him. Jia promises not to do it again but is confused when he asks, “Who said you shouldn’t?” She wonders aloud, “Then, should I do that again,” but Min-kyu is so confused that he doesn’t know what he wants. Baek-gyun returns with an umbrella and asks Min-kyu, “Where’s your first love?”

Ri-el walks into a hotel bar and scolds a man already seated for calling her while she was on a date. The man turns out to be Yoo-cul, who doesn’t immediately answer her question, “What’s so urgent?”

Mink-kyu looks dazed as he stumbles into his house with the umbrella, which reminds him of the kiss. Baek-gyun drops Jia off at home but she retreats to a park where she cringes in private until she remembers how Min-kyu gushed about her umbrella. She blames him for the fact that she got carried away.

Min-kyu stares at the stuffed animal that he bought for Jia, outfitted in her “Pretty One” hat, and asks, “Why did you do that to me?” He vents to the umbrella, “I can’t believe that after all this time, a robot stole my first kiss.”

Min-kyu next shares his troubles with Robovac and puzzles over what he put into her memory to cause such a response when he has a revelation — Aji-3 got the idea during his session with Sun-hye.

Min-kyu laughs in relief and asks the TV for a movie with robots. Soon he’s watching Edward Scissorhands, and during the kiss scene, Min-kyu recalls Baek-gyun’s instructions to input his emotions into Aji-3. He suspects that Aji-3 must have developed feelings for him and gasps, “Oh my gosh!”

Jia scolds herself because she could have been caught but decides, “I got away with it because he’s dumb. If he was a little smarter, I would have been caught.” Even though she had a close call, Jia can’t keep the smile off of her face.

Min-kyu lets himself into the barn where the real Aji-3 sits and wonders why she seems so unfamiliar. Pi startles him and she warns Min-kyu not to come by without calling first and bluntly explains that’s her way of telling him to leave.

Before he goes, Min-kyu asks if it’s possible for Aji-3 to develop feelings and Pi explains that the hope is she will be able to hug and comfort her master on her own. Pi is clear that her responses aren’t to be confused with real feelings and that if Aji-3 ever displayed that level of deep learning, the test would end so they could study her. When Pi mentions an end to the test, Min-kyu glances over at Aji-3 and makes a hasty retreat.

Jia remembers Min-kyu’s words, “I want to meet that person. Whoever made this umbrella,” and smiles as she admits, “That person is right under your nose. And, I’m not a robot. I’m a person.” She resolves to tell him everything once the test is over.

During a video call with Dr. Oh, Min-kyu explains that Aji-3 can act as if she likes someone. Min-kyu beams when he brags how much she likes him but his smile disappears when Dr. Oh points out that he’s talking about a robot.

Dr. Oh hangs up when he approaches a house to meet another patient who suffers from the same condition as Min-kyu. This other patient explains that he improved when he came to love and trust his nurse and Dr. Oh shares that his patient improved thanks to a special robot.

Jia feels as if she’s on top of the world and stares at Min-kyu’s number while she practices what to say, “I’m a person. We’re fated to be with each other. I’m the one who made that umbrella.”

Min-kyu struggles with the question of what exactly happened with Aji-3, was it a peck or a kiss? While Jia imagines telling Min-kyu the truth, she accidentally dials him and hangs up but he calls her back.

Jia pretends that she contacted him about the money that he owes and when Min-ku refuses, she starts to hang up, until he agrees to pay her if she answers a question. Haltingly, he asks, “I’m just wondering when two people’s lips touch, does that count as a kiss? Not just a peck?”

A kiss or a peck?

Jia asks if it was quick or long and Min-kyu reenacts it and decides that it was long, thrilled when she confirms, “Then that was definitely a kiss.” Jia is curious about his reaction and pries, “Was it nice? Did your heart flutter,” horrifed when Min-kyu confesses, “…it was totally absurd, ridiculous, and crazy.”

When Jia suddenly hangs up, Min-kyu worries that her feelings were hurt because she has no one special. Her bubble burst, Jia rides down the slide and returns to earth with a thud just as Min-kyu sends a text, “Someone will like you one day. Just sent you $300.”

That night, Min-kyu clutches his chest as he breathes, “So this is how it feels to be on the receiving end of one-sided love.” He finally settles down to sleep with a smile on his face.

Pi listens to the evening’s recording and hears Baek-gyun remind Jia that they used to go out on dates. When Baek-gyun returns, he complains how unpleasant it was to take care of Jia all evening and Pi offers to accompany her next time. Baek-gyun is forced to admit that he had a good time and wants to date Jia again.

Pi asks Baek-gyun if he figured out why Jia left him but he argues that’s all in the past. Pi reminds Baek-gyun that machines keep breaking unless the problem is discovered and corrected. She encourages Baek-gyun to think about when he was most sorry to Jia to find out what led to their breakup.

Jia returns to the barn in the morning with noticeably red eyes. Baek-gyun produces some eye drops and when he examines her, asks, “Are you a crying ghost?” Jia grabs the drops and snaps, “Would it kill you to be nice to me?”

Dressed as Aji-3, Jia informs the team that she has to get back to work and Pi promises that the robot will be repaired by the weekend. When Jia asks her not to speak formally, Pi tells her it’s what makes her comfortable and walks away.

Jia chokes when Ssan-ip asks if Min-kyu experienced his first kiss the night before and lies that she doesn’t know. Hok-tal thinks it would be easier for Min-kyu if the woman kissed him first while Jia squirms.

Ssan-ip mentions that Sun-hye told him something else but he can’t share it with Min-kyu until after his first kiss. We hear Sun-hye’s voice warn, “The day after your first kiss is very important.” Min-kyu sternly faces Jia in his house as Sun-hye’s voice continues, “If either of them ignores what happened, that’s when the game of ‘Hard to Get’ begins.”

Min-kyu finally speaks, “You can’t love me. You might be able to become my closest friend but you can’t be the woman I love.” Jia remembers when he asked her to stay with him until he dies while Min-kyu continues, “So you can’t do what you did yesterday ever again, okay?”

Min-kyu is flabbergasted when Jia innocently asks, “Did I do something yesterday?” When he orders her into Friend Mode, Jia can’t hide her annoyance and asks, “What,” so he tries to find out if she’s mad at him. Jia switches back to Operational Mode and pretends that she doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Jia won’t go back to Friend Mode and pretends that it’s currently unavailable, which doesn’t help Min-ku’s mood. The two argue back and forth until Sun-hye arrives for another coaching session.

Min-kyu glares at Jia as he explains to Sun-hye that his first kiss was stolen from him. Sun-hye sympathizes that he must feel wronged while Jia mutters that she can’t exactly give it back.

Sun-hye recommends that Min-kyu should try again with a private, cozy date and suggests a drive. Min-kyu imagines his car parked near the river where he moves in for a kiss with Ri-el until Aji-3 pops up in the back seat.

Min-kyu nixes a drive so Sun-hye proposes a movie and we see him with Ri-el in an otherwise empty theater. When their eyes meet during a kiss scene, they move in for a kiss of their own until Aji-3’s hand reaches for some popcorn.

Min-kyu can’t get Aji-3 out of his head so he scolds, “Can you stop interfering? I can’t do it because you keep following me around like a puppy!” Sun-hye calmly suggests, “Then go by yourself,” but Min-kyu protests, “I need her there in order to kiss anyone.”

Sun-hye has to ask, “You’re having a funny fling, aren’t you?” Min-kyu denies any such thing and storms off which gives Sun-hye a chance to ask Jia how she’s holding up. She explains that she pretended that the memory disappeared.

At the barn, Baek-gyun asks Pi for an honest assessment of his behavior. She admits that he speaks harshly and lacks manners but adds that’s not how she sees him. Baek-gyun tells Pi what he’s most sorry about — he scolded Jia in front of a group of researchers when he found her cleaning his lab.

Outside, Min-kyu opens the umbrella to test Aji-3’s memory. Jia keeps up the ruse that the memory is gone, even when Min-kyu makes the umbrella clear. She asks if she needs to remember and he explains, “No, you must erase it.”

Min-kyu finally admits that it’s not fair that he’s the only one who remembers so she encourages him, “You should forget it too.” Min-kyu explains that humans can’t erase memories like robots and confesses that he’ll remember every time he looks at the umbrella. He stomps off in frustration with an annoyed Jia close behind.

EPISODE 14: “You’re concerned for Jo Jia”

At Sun-hye’s coffee shop, Hok-tal returns a feather ornament and when she coyly asks if it’s a coincidence that he found it, he doesn’t catch on that she’s flirting. She offers him a cup of coffee but turns her down because he has no money and refuses her suggestion to pay later. Sun-hye wonders to herself, “What’s wrong with this guy?”

Ssan-ip walks in wearing new clothes, surprised to see Hok-tal already there. When Ssan-ip orders coffee, Hok-tal forgets his objections and orders some as well. Once they’re served, Hok-tal asks, “Sun-hye, once the pushing and pulling starts, which side gets pulled along?” She tells them that it’s the person who gets angry first.

Butler Sung stands next to his cart piled with packages and protests that it’s his job to carry them inside. Min-kyu explains that from now on Aji-3 will handle that job as Jia looks at him forlornly.

Later, Min-kyu lounges on his couch to watch Jia clean and is confronted, “…I thought I was your treasure. You shouldn’t treat your treasure so carelessly.” He argues, “What’s the use of a forgetful robot that can’t save information? You should do petty work.” (Work isn’t the only petty thing going on here.)

Jia later reminds Min-kyu that her batteries will wear out faster if she works so hard and he asks if she’s tired. She reminds him that’s not possible so he gives her another task. When she vacuums near his desk and sees her unopened petition it looks like war as she mutters, “He wouldn’t shed a drop of blood even if I stabbed him.”

When Baek-gyun walks up to the house and discovers Jia cleaning windows, he confronts Min-kyu about his treatment of her and offers to clean the windows instead. Min-kyu orders her to close the umbrella but Baek-gyun won’t let her do that either.

Min-kyu asks what’s going on and Baek-gyun covers with the explanation that he made the umbrella, but an alarmed Jia thinks to herself, “No…It’s my invention.” Jia can’t believe it when Min-kyu dismisses Baek-gyun’s claim and argues that it was created by a greater genius.

Min-kyu invites Baek-gyun inside to show him the plans for Santa Maria’s new research complex. Baek-gyun points out that Min-kyu’s plans aren’t personalized to suit the team and rattles off amenities that would appeal to Hok-tal. When Jia asks, “What about me,” the men answer in unison, “You’re a robot!”

After Jia returns to the barn, Baek-gyun tries to make up for her hard day with a crate of juice boxes and watches with satisfaction as she drinks one. Later, while he and Pi work on Aji-3, he tells the robot, “Jo Jia is struggling because of you. Get up soon.”

When Aji-3 correctly concludes, “You’re concerned for Jo Jia,” Pi turns to walk away but slips on a ball bearing. Baek-gyun catches her and Aji-3 announces, “This is the moment when you go in for a kiss.”

Baek-gyun demands to know who taught her that and Pi reminds him about Sun-hye. They awkwardly part just before Ssan-ip and Hok-tal return with sandwiches. Pi criticizes Ssan-ip for ordering too much and it causes Baek-gyun to remember when he didn’t allow a hungry Jia to order what she wanted.

Min-kyu sits in bed and happily declares that he’s over it and turns over to go to sleep, but soon he’s in front of the barn in defeat, “I’m not completely over it.” Min-kyu lets himself in while everyone is asleep and approaches the real Aji-3, who greets him as Chairman Kim. Min-kyu wonders why she didn’t call him Master and she explains that she’s not operating with his personalized program.

Min-kyu wants to know if she’s the only Aji-3 and she confirms that she’s the only one produced by Santa Maria. When he voices doubt that she’s his Aji-3, she responds, “A person who trusts no one can’t gain the trust of anyone,” something that Pi once told him. Min-kyu gets an idea and asks Aji-3 what it means to train a robot and when she repeats what Baek-gyun told him, “It means to form a relationship,” he makes an important, but disturbing connection.

Back in his house, Min-kyu thinks over Pi’s explanation that Aji-3’s responses aren’t real emotions. As he lies in his bed, he imagines Jia as Aji-3 next to him and tells himself that it feels so real even though it’s fake. He reaches for her but her image disappears and a tormented Min-kyu is left to struggle with his dilemma.

Jia stands outside of Min-kyu’s house in the morning and gives herself a pep talk, “Forget about what happened yesterday and act as you always did. You are Kim Min-kyu’s most cherished friend and treasure.”

Inside, Min-kyu stares at Jia until he announces that he’s hungry. Jia watches him eat but Min-ku stops to offer her some of his food. He laughs that he’s kidding but she notes that he doesn’t seem to be in a good mood. Min-ku points out that he’s smiling but she reminds him that she’s watched him for a long time. Min-kyu coldly replies that’s what she does, she observes everyone, no matter who it is. Ouch.

Min-kyu watches a game show and when Jia laughs, he asks sadly if it’s because she thinks it’s funny or because she should. She wonders if he’s still upset about what happened but he ignores her and announces it the perfect day to wash blankets.

I’m not your friend

Min-kyu steps on his blankets as they soak in his tub and when asked if he’s tired, he comments that robots never gets tired. Jia watches him worriedly and when she wipes some suds from his face he grabs her and asks, “You remember it, don’t you?”

After a long pause, Jia replies, “I’m not sure what you mean, Master.” Min-kyu releases her and confesses, “I really hate you.” Angrily, he tells her that he’s not her friend anymore because he did something that no friend would ever do. He orders her to only function in Operation Mode from now on or he will reset her and then he sends her home. Jia volunteers that she still has battery left but Min-kyu wants to be alone.

Later, while Robovac whirs about, Min-kyu lies on the table that once held his house of cards. Tormented by sweet memories of Jia as Aji-3, he reminds himself that it was all fake. Suddenly, his phone alerts him to an email from Madame X with a warning that his position at the company is at risk.

Chairman Hwang meets with Director Yeh to inform him that Yoo-chul is about to become the next chairman and suggests that he would be a good choice for a son-in-law. Director Yoon shows Director Yeh a report that proves that Chairman Hwang is close to controlling the majority of shares.

Chairman Hwang outlines his plan to have Min-kyu dismissed at the next board meeting but Director Yeh reminds him that he made them a lot of money over the years. Director Yeh is adamant that unless he has proof that Min-kyu can’t fulfill his duties, he’ll keep the promise that he made to Min-kyu’s father and support him.

Before Director Yeh can leave, Chairman Hwang warns, “I’m giving you a chance. When a chance comes, you must take it.” Director Yeh explains that he doesn’t care about succession, he only cares about the company, just like Min-kyu’s late father.

Once he leaves, Chairman Hwang orders Director Yoon to finalize the sale of Daeyang Shipbuilding once Min-kyu is dismissed. He asks what Min-kyu is up to and learns that he’s looking for Jang Doo-sam, the driver of Daeyang’s late Chairman Park.

Jin-bae uses Jang Doo-sam’s photo to verify his address but learns that he just moved out. Jin-bae leaves his card with the attendant and asks him to call if Jang Doo-sam returns.

Jin-bae’s wife reads the story of the Velveteen Rabbit to her daughter as Jia walks alone, deep in thought. Min-kyu lies on his table and stares at the ceiling as she reads, “You can become real if someone loves you for a long time.”

Jia walks into the barn while the team celebrates the release of an online article that will restore Baek-gyun’s reputation, thanks to Min-kyu. Baek-gyun was falsely accused of stealing research and in order to protect Ssan-ip and Pi, he didn’t fight the allegation.

Baek-gyun caps off the good news with an announcement that the plans for their research lab are ready. The team calls for a party and soon everyone is gathered at Sun-hye’s coffee shop. They raise their glasses as Beaek-gyun toasts Min-kyu, the man who restored the team’s reputation.

Min-kyu isn’t in a party mood but he gamely drinks beer from a bottle. When Sun-hye encourages him to eat, Min-kyu confides that he can’t eat anything prepared by someone else. Sun-hye notices that Jia keeps looking at Min-kyu and that Pi’s attention is on Baek-gyun. She proposes a game called “Five Chances” to select a couple to buy ice cream and when Baek-gyun and Pi end up losing, they leave on their errand.

Sun-hye announces that the moon is bright and invites Hok-tal to look at it, but he informs her that it’s only a crescent moon. Ssan-ip is interested but he gets emotional and tells Sun-hye, “But my moon is really sad.” Sun-hye takes the two men outside anyway and leaves Jia alone with Min-kyu.

Jia stands next to Min-kyu and encourages him to go home because he’s drunk. When she starts to walk away he grabs her hand but she tells him to let her go. He finally looks at her and confesses, “I’m afraid you’ll leave. I can’t live without you,” only to be reminded that’s not something to say to a friend.

Min-kyu pulls Jia down into the chair next to him for another game of Five Chances. He holds up his hand and lists his challenges, “Fold… if you were kissed by a robot. Fold… if you were dumbfounded when that happened. Fold…if you were angry because of it. Fold…if you hated that robot as a result.”

Tears roll down his face by the time Min-kyu gets to his last challenge, “Fold…if you wish that robot was human.” He passes out on the table and Jia lays her head next to his as she finally confesses the truth, “I’m not a robot.”

COMMENTS

It was so jarring to watch Min-kyu and Jia plunge from the flush of that first kiss into angsty, tortured turmoil. I never expected that Jia would fall so hard and so quickly for Min-kyu, but that kiss had her floating and it was devastating to witness her crash. She’s a real girl in love but she can’t let anyone know, especially Min-kyu. He adds to her torment geometrically by dumping what must be fifteen years of anger and frustration in her lap, and the poor girl is so far gone that she puts up with it.

Min-kyu is ready to rejoin the world, as much as he’s able, and even though Jia as Aji-3 has facilitated his reentry, she’s now standing in his way. He needs her, but he doesn’t want to, because she’s a reminder that he’s still not completely free of his affliction. Min-kyu has had a taste of what his life could become and he wants to run, not walk, from his isolation. I think that’s why he’s so angry that his first kiss was with a robot, aside from the fact that he knows that he can’t have a real relationship with one, he’s impatient for real human experiences, not half-baked ones. He believes that Jia is a robot and that all of their interactions are fake, angry because she’s confused him.

Which is what makes that introduction of the Velveteen Rabbit so poignant. A toy rabbit that was not only loved so deeply for so long but loved deeply as well. What is the message here, that the love we feel is very real and has great power? Of course we can’t love inanimate objects to the point that they become real and Min-kyu knows that all too well. But perhaps his heart will be opened enough that he’ll one day see the real Jia before him and recognize that he was connected to her all along. What he felt was real, it was never fake, and she returned his sentiments every step of the way. How else will he manage to overcome his disappointment when he learns that she deceived him for so long?

Yoo Seung-ho has the most incredible emotional range and we got to see everything from heart stopping smiles to heart breaking tears this hour. His glares were cruel and his eyes so cold that it was difficult to remember his warm smiles. Jia proved that she’s a real trooper because she endured his wrath not just for his sake but for the Santa Maria team as well. The restoration of Baek-gyun’s reputation reminded me of what’s at stake with his Aji-3 project. It’s not just his work but that of the entire team and they’ve suffered ostracism and poverty to bring it to fruition. Add to that the fact that Min-kyu could be in real danger without Jia, she can’t bring herself to leave him before the real Aji-3 is ready to provide that sense of security.

The corporate angle of this drama finally picks up steam as Chairman Hwang makes his move not only for control of the company, but for a match between Yoo-chul and Ri-el. As usual, Madame X makes contact to help Min-kyu, but he’s still at a disadvantage because of his condition. The lines at KM Financial are about to be drawn and it will be interesting to see who sides with Min-kyu.

Thankfully, there’s still some lightheartedness to remind us that this is a romantic comedy. Sun-hye’s triangle with Hok-tal and Ssan-ip is hilarious and I’m looking forward to witnessing how she handles such logical men in matters of the heart. Hok-tal is so literal and obtuse but I get the feeling that he’s on the verge of connecting with Sun-hye, who seems genuinely interested in him (But please, that weird eye make-up has to go). For now, they’ll provide the comic relief while Jia and Min-kyu navigate their way through turbulent times.

Thanks for the recap! This episode really ran the spectrum of petty hilarity to heartbreak and tears. I died at the ways they undercut the romantic tension from the kiss - from Ji-ah’s hilarious acting to convince Min-kyu she’d erased the memory, to Min-kyu’s subsequent petty chore designation. Aaaaand then my heart broke when he came to the realization that AG-3 was just a robot and her feelings weren’t real (although obviously we know differently). YSH is always good at the intense/tearful scenes, and he makes Min-kyu’s pain and confusion so believable.

I totally died at their “I won’t do it again!” “Did I say that?” “Then should I do it again?” even as Ji-ah insisted she couldn’t remember. I love the funny moments in this show!

I adore this show so much. I love all the characters especially Sun Hye, except for Baek-gyun. I understand why Jia broke up with him and moved on to Min-Kyu. Also cheers to Yoo Seung-ho who is playing the hell out of Min Kyu.

Yay! The recap is early! Thank you, Teriyaki and the comments were also wonderful! Agree with you, the eye makeup has to go, and this

(Work isn’t the only petty thing going on here.)

made me go lol.

This episode went from unbelievably adorable to angsty. Also, it was really intriguing that aji3 ate popcorn in min kyu's imagination. It just goes to tell how much the lines have blurred in his head about aji3 being a robot, I think the encounter with the real aji3 brought him back from that.

I am very worried about how min kyu is going to feel when he realizes that he has been decieved all along. Once he realizes he has been betrayed yet again by people, I am not sure how he will overcome it and also about how it will affect his allergy. But, atleast the fact that his wish came true should ease some of his pain, right? Right?

Also, that phone call was the cutest thing this episode! ❤️

Baek-gyun is not helping to cover the lie that she is a robot. He being willing to clean the Windows instead of her?!!! Come on!
On the other hand, I liked the confusion he was in after the kiss, although poor thing, I know it must have been hard for him. But how funny!
I really hope he can understand later on the reason why they lied to him, and be able to forgive.

I meant Min kyu's confusion...

At first when I watched his shocked face after seeing the real Aji-3, I was confused. I thought he'd discovered that Ji-ah was actually human, and he was pissed off at having been lied to. And then I realized that he was so upset because he realized that a robot's emotions were never "real" - that because she was a robot, any action of affection toward him was purely due to programming and nothing else. He realized that Aji-3 had picked up phrases from both Pi and Baek-gyun as "deep learning", and that meant that even a kiss from Aji-3 meant nothing on an emotional level.

And that hit him hard, because he had been excited and happy that someone had liked him. It had been a fantastic feeling for him after 15 years of solitude, and to realize that those "feelings" were only a form of robotic deep-learning (which we know isn't the case since Ji-ah is human, but he doesn't know that) must have been a huge crash down from the clouds for him.

He's upset with himself because he allowed himself to feel so happy that someone liked him, and then he realized that those emotions were fake. He got upset with himself because he wished so desperately that Aji-3 could be human, so that those emotions were real. And ouch, that realization broke my heart, even as I was pissed off that he was taking his anger out on Ji-ah.

Very well explained, lezah. I could have not said it better. He thought his robot was only learning through himb and his "imput", and his "relationship", but to see the "real" aji3 talking like that, molded by others, he felt kind of betrayed and angry with himself. Poor guy.

Nice recap! I adored ep. 13 - it so perfectly captures the giddiness of first love. The moment after the kiss - when he stepped away from Jia but still made sure that the she did not get wet - was the moment when I finally fell in love with MK. It shows that underneath the pettiness he is sweet and caring. I agree that MK wants real human connection so he needs to get past his self-imposed walls and into the world. It's maybe a good thing that new challenges are thrown at him - both romantically and company-related. He needs to figure out that you can't do everything alone and that he can put some trust in people around him (imperfect as they may be); there will be some growing pains along the the way but Jia will be right by him through it all.

Add Jia pulling in again to let Min Kyu be covered by the umbrella also. I live for these little details successfully interpolated on significant scenes. You know, like reflecting & bending the typical female - male gender roles in a relationship..

Oh, that last scene! That turmoil! Yoo Seung-ho makes me weak. I'm expecting them to make full use of his crying abilities because next week will be harsh. I just hope they balance the impending heartbreak and broken trust with a lot of sweetness and humor. I'm loving Chae Soo-bin too. Really, both of them have made me believe that this fantastic world could actually exist. Or...maybe I just want them to exist so that I can smile happily to myself.

I think with Chobits it was different, no? Because Chii actually is a robot and here Aji-3 isn't the one Min-kyu fell for, neither is she repeating those phrases as anything but programming, and not on the Chobits kind of deep level either.

yeah i know theyre totally different stories. i was just thinking since jiA’s been overriding some rules like the sandwich ban, wont she be affecting other things too? just thought it would be some weird twist if she did fall in love too. she was built to create emotions, create relationships, wasnt she? so why cant she fall in love too? (yes, i know i sound overly concerned about a robot.)

of course since her input right now is mostly visual thru contact lenses of jiA, emotional programming may be limited. ive also thought she’s not as high tech as Chii. but i just like thinking of a twist.

The constant push and pull, action and reaction, the I-am-angry-at-you but I-can't-live-without-you ... YSH and CSB just do them all so well. I love how the first half was all cute, with Minkyu demanding that Jia remember the kiss, and Jia, as Aji3, reacting by pretending to not have any memory of it, and then we get a second half that is all angst, with both starting to realize what they mean for each other and what it means for them moving forward. The episode was a roller coaster of emotions, brilliantly and charmingly carried and acted out by our two leads.

I understand why Jia immediately fell in love with Minkyu, as he, albeit unknowingly, told her the words that she has been wanting to hear all along. While her inventions are considered useless stuff by many, Jia considers these as her life's work and purpose. The fact that Minkyu considers her a genius and appreciates her quirky invention more than her brother and ex-boyfriend ever did was the validation that she has been craving all this time. (It was pretty hilarious though that MK told Baekgyun how he didn't believe that it was him that invented the umbrella as it must've come from someone way smarter, with Jia then muttering that her IQ level is only 94. 😅 )

My primary concern, as we enter the midpoint of the drama, is how little time Min Kyu and Jia have spent together. Min Kyu and Aji 3 have more of a connection than Min Kyu and Jia. This means that unless we have a hard pivot towards introducing Jia into Min Kyu's life; any relationship between them will be forced.

Jia, at this point, has only deceived Min Kyu. (Returning the necklace is more the exception than the rule so far.) Min Kyu's going to see her as taking advantage of him when he realizes she snuck the petition into his house. Not to forget the gigantic elephant in the room which Jia being human. In my opinion, the writer is working themselves into a corner.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I agree. Fake Aji3's chingu mode is all Jia. Most of the time she is essentially being herself, minus the fact that she loves food and cannot eat (:-(). Her concern for him is 100% genuine and that's what matters. That said, I do love how he gets to rediscover her from different points of view - as aji3/Jo sajang/funny kid's aunt/inventor Jo...

I agree with you @charlie, there has been hardly any communication between the real Aji3 and Min Kyu and Jia hardly behaves like a robot. Actually, when Min kyu met the real Aji3, I thought that his upset reaction was also because he didn't recognise how she was acting (because the robot didn't behave like Jia). I also love the little moments when they're on the phone. He clearly feels comfortable enough with CEO Jo to ask her about kissing!

Clearly the problem is going to come when he realises she'd been pretending to be a robot all along, and the question of what's real and what isn't, and who you can and cannot trust, will raise its ugly head

Ehrm, this is Min Kyu, who after bragging to his doctor that a robot is having a crush on him - cheered Jia up that someone destined for her will surely come. *lol*
Awwww, fact is, Jia has turned this side of Min Kyu into the surface and he didn't realizing it until he had talked to the real Aji-3 & was able to contemplate.
I don't know.. so how did we get there?
From the hilarity of Jia and Min Kyu's after-the-kiss scenario to their cute bickering over the forgotten kiss then to the angst which actually rooted from that kiss and worsened by Jia's memory-deleted pretence.

I'm so on board to this adorable OTP that I feel so empty as it unfolds to the characters the complication of their attachment and growing feelings.

Teriyaki put into words this indescribable feeling I have while watching the puppy, lively min kyu turned cold & distant overnight. I really have to give this to Yoo Seung Ho - his stares , ghad, I feel like I, myself, is feeling what are Jia's emotions at that moment- the good camera shots are of help and of course, along side a good actress like Chae Soo Bin, they could build up this emotional connection that reaches us, viewers.

On the other side- the side characters. lol
This! this Baek Gyun-Pi ship! Pi likes him and we can all agree thag she seems to be someone who matches BG's personality. I wanted to see it unfold. I hope after the writer close things out with BG & JA she give this story a little pen.
I don't know where to board. I'm on the middle of the ship- Sun Hye-Hoktal/ Sun Hye-Ssanip I can never choose because they're all pure lovable ( Ssanip's "Are you getting ready for an eye surgery?" random question had me rolling on my bed lol)
Seems like Ri El likes Yoo Chul she just doesn't realize it yet. I also buy that she's too bored from that date and she just wanted to find her way out. Just like some beanies already pointed out, Ri El is not straight unlikable, they are not just really on the same wavelength.

Btw, I'm excited how this 'trust is the medicine' will be played given the set up.

Min-kyu and Jia have crazy chemistry even on the phone, in fact I would argue that's almost their best chemistry because they're being honest with each other and not pretending to be anything else or believing one of them is a robot. It's something that isn't there even with "friend mode" Jia-as-Aji3.

And this is a crazy thought but I went to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi this weekend and SPOILER AHEAD

what do I find but two characters having almost similar conversations/connections as our MK and Jia-as-herself (ok Min-kyu and Jia are not trying to kill each other but they're still at their most honest on the phone), only those guys don't use telephones.

END SPOILER

But the chemistry between the actors in both INAR and SW:TLJ is incredible, it's amazing that it comes through so strongly even when they're not even in the same physical space.

That ending scene...the soft declaration "I'm not a robot." felt so on-point and poignant,it felt so powerful that I could almost touch it through my phone screen, and I'm talking about the recap as I've yet to watch it! I especially adore and respect this kind of writing, where you can feel the scene to the maximum even by just listening to/reading it even without watching the actual thing. Of course, some of the major credits will go to the capability of recapper/storyteller,but you cannot deny that the said story must've been very strong and powerful in order for that to happen. Keep it up,show!

And I adore the character of Sun-hye! It's good to see that she's not the usual "heroine's girlfriend" and gets some big things to do.

Aaaah poor Min-kyu, he thinks he's found his dream girl, only she's not even the same species as him. And poor Jia, she's falling for him for real but can't act on her feelings because of a lie, it's so sad.

Also I love the movie they chose to show Min-kyu's state of mind. Edward Scissorhands is actually a lovely and really touching movie, it's a long time since I saw it but it really left an impression. And Winona Ryder (the actress in the film) is freaking gorgeous and iconic, it's been more than 25 years since that movie but she's hardly aged.

(Also Edward Scissorhands is probably a better choice for poor Min-kyu now than, say, Terminator. lol!)

I feel really sorry for MK and Jia. I think MK's anger towards Jia as Aji3 is because he realized, through Pi's explanation, that, as a robot, Jia/Aji3 will never be able to reciprocate his growing feelings. That what she has shown him so far was all learned and programmed. Jia, who has to continue with the ruse, has to put up with MK's anger. The telling of the Velveteen Rabbit in the background while both MK and Jia are going through this conflict is thus so fitting and poignant. Minkyu, who prides himself as a genius, is struggling to be rational in trying not to have feelings for a robot but is somewhat fighting a losing battle in hoping that Aji3 (who he doesn't know yet is really Jia) *becomes* a real human being, with real thoughts and emotions. (I recalled an earlier episode where he "scolded"Jia/Aji3 for not having a heart.) Jia, on the other hand, is wishing that she can finally confess to and *become* a human being in front of MK.

Also..they were wearing matching colors at the "I'm not your friend" scene right? Hehe.
A Bunny story was the most suitable book reference to this already bunny-cute drama. And Velveteen Rabbit at that! Yaaay!!!
And what are they trying to suggest with the names?? We've already noted aji vs jia...but doesn't Jo Jia looks like it's "Georgia" ? °~°

Oh Lord, the feels!
This show did such a good job of making me laugh out loud and then switch to being sad for my poor bae.

That scene where he's trying to get her to remember the kiss so he can order her to forget it is frigging hilarious but the one where he goes to see Aji-3 recharging and says, "You're not my Aji3, are you?" broke my poor heart.

The whole thing is given even more emotional resonance by the fact that when Min Kyu says "I can't live without you" he's speaking the literal truth. Obviously he needs to evolve to a point where he can survive without her and then still choose to be with her but it's clearly going to be a tough lesson.

I've been wondering exactly what Aji-3 is making of all of this so I loved the scene where she suddenly says, "Now you should kiss!" in the lab and all the researchers are wondering what's going on.

My favorite episodes 13-14! C'mon, who wouldn't fall for Min Kyu that easy, I'm half in love with him as well, just that I'm still aware of my reality :-) Yoo Seung Ho is so good, but he don't do romcoms coz well, he's got a great range but this one is really good, I can't imagine anyone else who could play this role.
It is somewhat difficult to listen to Sun Hye and her love advice coz she is talking about a real human and not the robot that MinKyu believes to be faking emotions. you are confusing the guy even more but I like Sun Hye, she's pretty cool and HOktal/ Ssan-Ip tandem, too. The way they bantered at the start when Ssan Ip found Hoktal in the Cafe with Sunhye, is so funny. I already watch these episodes thrice, the simple nuances, how adorable YSH is just thinking about his first kiss and Ji A's pretense that she doesn't remember anything - gems!
Wait, I wonder if Ji A is still wearing the gizmo contacts coz surely Pi saw what was going on or something, right?

Maybe they're saving the footage of the kissing scene for Dr. Hong's outburst. You know, when he decides to fight for his (one-sided) love and confronts Jia (or Min-kyu).

I am ready for Aji 3 to be fixed and take Jia's place. Then for the truth to come out. When the two were just learning to get along and become friends I could handle the deception and hijinks it brought, but now I am afraid of how devastating it will be to Min-kyu.
However, I am glad that there are viable reasons for the deception to carry on. Plus the heroine and the Santa Maria group are so likable I am able to still root for them.

I loved his interaction with Aji 3 - even if he's ridiculously dense by not computing that maybe Jia is human, he recognises immediately that Aji 3 is not 'his' Aji 3. She's a person to him, with a personality, he just hasn't realised yet.

I super love this drama. Our leads are so cute and the rest of the cast has grown on me as well. I really loved that Min-kyu found the real Aji 3 to be unfamiliar---hopefully this means good things when Ji-A is revealed and they'll be able to reconcile.

Side note, I laughed when the "robot" movie was Edward Scissorhands. Since when!? hahaha ...Although I guess movies like Ex Machina, iRobot, or AI would not be super great choices either.

oh man Ex Machina would have DEVASTATED HIM with its implications D: feminist themes aside it's a movie about how we're projecting our emotions on inanimate objects and how it can learn to deceive us in deadly ways. I think it would have caused him to lose trust in her completely.

"Yoo Seung-ho has the most incredible emotional range and we got to see everything from heart stopping smiles to heart breaking tears this hour. His glares were cruel and his eyes so cold that it was difficult to remember his warm smiles."
Urgh, I couldn't agree more. YSH is just awesome when it comes to emotions. And seeing Min Kyu with a dark cloud over his head that refuses to go away really unsettles me. I was sorta confused why he'd be so upset, but knowing the kind of person he is, I think I understand now. This week's episodes was too stressful, the comedy aspect gone for a while, but in a way I don't exactly mind, cuz this how I normally see YSH.

I loved Min Kyu's reaction straight after the kiss, it was comedy golden. And Jia's little scene at the playground is exactly the kind of reactions you would get for a giddy lil girl in love. I enjoyed the scene where Min Kyu asked the real Jia about his kiss/peck as if they've been friends for years.

I don't usually ship main characters, so seeing that Pi has a thing for Baek Gyun, I'm like "Yes! I ship them!" And if they do end up together, I hope BG won't make the same mistakes he did with JA.

They only show us brief glimpses of the corporate side of the story each week and after each week, I kinda forget what it's all about. Not that I wish the main leads would get less screen-time, I'm just waiting for these two story lines to intersect and make sense as a whole. Also hoping for more character in-depth for Yoo Chul and Ri El.

Omg this point. This is how I normally see YSH in dramas as well. YSH in this element is what I'm used to so in a way, it wasn't THAT devastating seeing him suffer.

I enjoyed the scene where Min Kyu asked the real Jia about his kiss/peck as if they've been friends for years.

I got the same feeling, too. When he answered his phone with "What?!" it made me think of those BFFS in love and hate relationship XD

I just binged this drama this week and I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE it. The story is so sweet and the drama is so easy to watch. The premise, characters, and acting are enjoyable. I love all of the characters, and it is always so much fun when that happens! Nice groups of pals is the big drama catnip for me, and this one has squad goals down! Pi is probably the least lovable…she seems kind of like a less charming Bo Mi from BTLIOF as she’s always kinda crabby and flat, but this week she supported Jo Ji Ah so I deem her aight after all. I also had a pleasant surprise because until I finished episode 15 I thought that it had finished airing at 16 eps. After watching 16 I realized it would have been a little tricky to resolve everything in those twentysomething minutes! So glad it’s only half done. Just enjoying it so much!

I wonder if the robot's name is a hint that Aji3 is programmed to behave in the opposite way of Jia. A-ji vs Ji-a. Baek-gyun never understood why Jia split up from him, so now he's created a robot that will behave rationally at all times.

I'm clearly putting waaaay too much thought into this.

Honestly, for a few moments I totally believed he suspected she was human. There were beats, like subconscious realization - I truly believe there's a part of him that does think she's not a robot. But he's so great at suppressing it to a point that it's completely buried in his mind. He's not stupid actually, he's literally just in denial. He reminds me of me in moments like those. I sometimes lie to myself to the point where I forget the truth.

I absolutely loved the moment when he looks at Aji-3 and says to himself, she looks like a stranger. Because that's exactly what I thought too. This isn't the person/robot he loves and even he realizes that. So the few moments of interaction he had with her was so heartbreaking. Surely if she had been functioning and Jia was never involved, he'd never have fallen in love with it. Because Aji-3 is so obviously mechanical and he saw that.

Min-kyu is so close to my heart as a character somehow. Because he's so ridiculously human. I like that given his situation, denial is the answer to everything. But it's great that he also acts on impulse. I love how bashful he was when he thought Jia liked him, or how angry he was when he thought his emotions were so one-sided that a simple malfunction can erase those memories from her mind.

One of my favourite moments in the episode tho, was when he casually offered her his pasta. That was actually so heartbreaking. I felt his impulse to offer her food wasn't random but rather a way to desperately humanize her in his mind. Then he realizes how dumb that looked to a robot and just takes it back passing it off as a joke. He was kinda mocking himself almost. I might've felt my heart crack at that, it was so sad!

But of course the best scene of the episode (the drama as of this episode?) was the game scene. The words were so simple too - I'm not a robot. But the weight it carried was so heavy. MThe way it played out, after all the denial, giddiness, excitement, irritation leading to anger, disappointment to finally breaking down. That was simply amazing.

Serious hats off to Yoo Seung-ho. I mean, he was great in Ruler honestly. So convincing and moving but that drama was bread and butter for him. Sometimes, it feels a bit too easy. This one though, it's different. And he's killing it. Still, one thing is certain - he's always so freakin great at being emotional. There was so much weight in the moments when he was angry or hurt. I could see the pain and confusion about as so palpable and like TeriYaki said, his eyes were so cold, I felt chills down my spine specially in the scene where he warns her he'd reset her if needed.

And Chae Soo-bin is fantastic too! I think she won me over for life the moment she told Min-kyu she still has some battery left and didn't want to go. The heartbreak in her eyes - it actually made me tear up. She's not a robot, and I know Min-kyu feels that on some levels. That look she gave him should've...

....betrayed any doubts.

I'm not saying Min-kyu won't be hurt when he finds out he's been lied to. Because he believes on a very conscious level that she's not human. However, I think once he finds out, he'll realize that a part of him had known/doubted her all along, but he trampled on that little subconscious voice because he fears getting betrayed so much. I do want him to find out soon though. So that it can play out and they can start to finally find a way back to each other with no secrets pulling them back.

Lol, my comments are too long for the character limit. Need to tone it down! 😂
