Dance sports girls was such a sweet, charming show! It was not without flaws but still worth it all. I just wish they had ended hye jin’s story differently, if anybody deserved a break, it’s her. :'(
I agree 🙁 I would have been happy with anything, like even if she continued working with shi eun’s sister and met up with the other girls regularly or deciding to go with her father and start somewhere else. Instead, this ending was just so heart breaking.
The dad was a surprise to me and maybe there was a good reason she didn’t want to go with him. She might need help with addiction and/or depression in order to be able to accept the tremendous losses she’s suffered and move on to a better life.
I’m not entirely sure, but I think Hye Jin’s dad was actually an abusive father and may have been related to the incident alluded to when Hye Jin had to go to the police station as a child and learned that there are some things she can’t count on adults for. I had just assumed her dad was dead but I think her grandmother was actually protecting her from him by raising her instead. In my mind, Hye Jin didn’t attend the funeral because she knew her father would be there and would therefore find her; however, her girlfriends showed up and inevitably gave away her location, making her have to ditch her life in Geoje and go on the run from him.
Although her story is sad, it’s realistic. There are some unfortunate lots in life that you just can’t escape from and hers was one of them. However, just because her happy ending doesn’t look like the ones for normal people, it was still a happy ending in a way for her because for the first time she has happy memories that give her the strength to hope and dream for a better life for herself. In the last scene, the guy was most definitely asking her to do something illegal/dangerous and she initially agreed to it for the money, but then when she heard the music she was reminded of her dance club days and decided to walk away from the offer, choosing to live an upright life instead. Her writing of Mr. Lee’s number on the bus window suggests that still believes in the possibility of becoming happy again in the future and that one day she’ll open herself up once more and reach back out to the people that she knows generally care for her for their help. I do wish they could have added one scene of the other girls wondering what she’s up to though.
Oh, wow! So beautifully written! Thanks for this analysis, Hobakky! I never thought of it this way. Also, one of my minor complaints of this drama is the editing, sometimes I felt like the flow of the drama was a little difficult to understand and that a few things might have happened off screen.
Also, regarding other girls wondering about her, I found it hard too that the girls just gave up on her. But, it felt like only shi eun got through to her completely and accepted her for who she was whereas the other girls were still a little scared of her.
The editing was definitely a low-point. There were a lot of moments I had to re-watch to understand because it skipped around so much. It would have been great if we could have gotten just one more week so the ending wasn’t so rushed and we could have seen more of those off-screen moments like Seung Chan’s talk with Dad and Shi Eun’s suicide attempt after her dad’s death. The writer left a lot of things up to the viewer to connect the dots about.
To some extent I can kind of understand the girls not concerning themselves with Hye JIn anymore since if the girl completely cut herself off without saying about where or why she’s going there’s nothing they can do about it. I like to hope that Hye Jin will get herself in a good place and re-connect with the girls before they completely grow apart and forget about her.
I thought Hye Jin’s story was very realistic. @hobakky‘s analysis makes sense to me. Her dad was at the funeral then showed up at her place. I’m the most afraid for her because she really is alone in life. @imbuk I think the girls didn’t necessarily give up on her, but like many adolescents going through major life changes, they are mostly focussed on themselves. Even Shi Eun let her go several times when she might have been able to help her. I don’t think any of the girls were equipped to help Hye Jin even had they really wanted to.
Although all the girls had their own personal journeys to make during the show, Hye Jin’s was the one that was most centered around her alone. The biggest thing she needed and got from the dance club experience was a desire to better herself. Before she didn’t care at all about herself, the affect she could/did have on others, or life in general and unless she wanted to help herself there would be no way anyone could help her in a lasting way. She may be alone for the time being, but I think the plot goal for her all along was to get her to want to change that. I can see her making a new life for herself away from Geoje, making new friends, getting a decent job, maybe picking up a new hobby or continuing dancing lessons and, once she’s settled into a normal life, giving Mr. Lee a “good phone call” as a happier and healthier grown adult version of Hye Jin instead of needing to call him to bail her out.
After 2 episodes of sky castle, I am definitely intrigued. But the getting into a medical school plot completely aggravates me, especially that coach, does it get better in the upcoming episodes?
I am not a robot is the only drama right now that I am completely immersed in. I love everything about it. I am just so scared for our OTP and santa maria team now. Please don’t hurt them, show.
Awwww (ノ∀`♥) Thank you for this! I enjoy watching their BTS! We get a lot of extra fluffy scenes and of course, YSH’s eye-smile *A* Ugh they look so good together ;;
I love how they comfy they look off cam. I’ve seen one interview of them promoting the show and omggg CSB is beyond adorable with her simple, innocent, friendly skinship (= hitting YSH on the shoulder when she laughs or lightly patting him)
