When you find a drama that gets better as it goes on instead of crashing and burning

I’m so happy about this! I wasn’t sure about this drama (and didn’t have time to start it when it premiered) but it seems so great! I’m going to wait for it to finish, just to make sure, but everything I see about it looks awesome!

    3
    1

It’s enjoyable so far! Hopefully it keeps it up. There are several plot holes that hopefully will be filled by the end, but I’m happy that the show does not seem to be going in the direction I feared it would in the beginning.

I adore Yi Chan. Yes, I do. Would he be my ideal boyfriend? I don’t think so. But I would love to spend time with him as friends. He is awesome.

When you enjoy the first few episodes of a drama so much you’re ready to declare your love but then it immediately goes to shit

Twinkling Watermelon: Wow. They went dark with Eun-yu’s character, but now at least all her talk of preventing her existence makes more sense now. Girl is depressed AF.

Eun-gyeol is SO precious. “I’ll learn how to swear”, pffft.

I LOVE the idea of a fax machine giving Chung-ah the freedom that a phone would give a hearing person in the pre-internet era. I have to say, watching dramas from this time period and seeing how much more… tactile everything was makes me wistful. The age of screens and internet definitely has its advantages, but I sometimes long for simpler days. Even though it is because of the internet that I an able to be in this community and watch dramas in the first place!

Also, I’m assuming the show went with the English title Twinkling Watermelon and not Watermelon Sugar because of the Harry Styles song? Lol.

Mindy, sometimes I feel like we share a braincell because I too was thinking of how much more tactile things were, pre-screen invasion, although the word i would have gone for would have been tangible. Its like the things that made you feel things were in front of you, happening right before your eyes, your sources of information were things you could simply touch. It feels like something I would love to experience

I know in real life it must be so annoying having to comb through the library for your research paper, but I bet it also prevents you from getting distracted!

I am typing this as I am trying to do a class project…

The Third Marriage: HAHA. Now THIS is what I was expecting when I tried a daily drama. It’s EXACTLY like all those makjang parodies the primetime dramas do. It’s honestly hilarious. In the first 5 minutes you get a woman mysteriously drowning and a flashback to a screaming, hair pulling match between women AND punches thrown by the men over an affair. 15 minutes in and there is a deadly fiery explosion and a little girl is sold off after her mother leaves and her father is in jail. 10/10 no notes.

But 30 minutes of this mess was enough and I’m done. I don’t know how people can watch this stuff every day, LOL. It’s exactly like my mom with her soap operas. It even has that soap opera high frame rate.

Also, I saw a character in 1998 wearing Hoka shoes. Must be a time traveler. All of the 50 year old actors are playing 30 year olds in the flashback. Amazing.

omg, that sounds just so bad 😧 Thanks for reporting back and taking one for the Team!

    Like you said, it’s hilarious!
That’s why I watch them! Sometimes it’s too much even for me, and other times I really enjoy the craziness.
    These feel like sitcoms:

    They’re 30min long + have lost of episodes + they’re ridiculous. 🤣

Twinkling Watermelon: Wait, why would Se-gyeong’s family’s American phone number answering machine message be in Korean? LOL.

Ugh, the worst part of watching school dramas set in the past is the blatant corporal punishment. I know it definitely happened back then, but that doesn’t mean I have to see it without reason! We already know that Yi-chan is a little slacker troublemaker!

Eun-gyeol getting upset at his parents being mean to him is so cute. 😭 And the “fighting” between Yi-chan and Eun-gyeol is so funny and you can sometimes tell they’re thiiiis close to bursting out laughing while filming, ha!

Okay, it’s hilarious that they were able to stuff in some PPL thanks to Eun-yu bringing 21st century beauty items with her, LOL. I’m just waiting for Eun-gyeol or Eun-yu to accidentally say something anachronistic so the other realizes they’re time traveling.

And of course: Yi-chan and Chung-ah are so cute together, I can’t stand it. I really hope we get more of them tomorrow.

My mom also had to live the physical punishments of teachers. I definitely wouldn’t want to go back in time and study in her high school.

Eun Gyeol with his parents is the best part of the show for me. 🥺💚

I was expecting one of them to say something about missing mobile phones, when they broke down.

did you watch the BTS of ketchup sprayed on EG’s face scene ? .. it was an adlib infact.. and they just burst out laughing

Mom keeps teasing YC / actor on how good he is in taking selfies and EG/actor sitting next to her so serious and polite 😛 . ..

So I’m reading the book Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross and I’m really enjoying it, which is a relief because the previous several books I have read have been absolute slogs for me to get through.

And I just realized while reading that some of what I like about it is just like Hee-do and Yu-rim in Twenty-Five, Twenty-One! You know, that show’s true OTP.

Apparently rivals who unknowingly write to each other, thinking the other person is just a stranger, is one of my favorite types of storylines. The vulnerability! The tension! It kills me!

Doona! ep 1: It’s a pretty, pleasant enough watch? Nothing especially hooking about it tbh, I feel like it’s the type of show to watch while doing your laundry lol.

Will continue watching it with my friends.

Spontaneously started rewatching Pushing Daisies today for the first time since I was like 13 and realized that this show completely shaped literally all of my preferences for storytelling and cinematography in television and that Ned is literally my ideal male lead and that 90% of my favorite shows are colorful and quirky and sweet and oh god this all explains so much.

Oh also I love golden retrievers. But I guess everyone does.

Pushing Daises was such a fun show. I’m sad that it got cancelled after only two seasons 🙁

I was watching this interview: https://youtu.be/Lq3NrljwG5o?feature=shared

And I really like what he says about acting: “Many people think acting is creating something from zero, but it’s like maximizing some parts in me and expressing it.”

The Vogue Korea interview with Yu-na, Park Sung-hoon, and Kim Shin-rok isn’t subbed!! 😭

That’s good then. They do seem to have a very close bond IRL which is so cute. Also her expressions are so relaxed as if she is really just an ordinary happy kid. Makes to realize how talented an actor she is.

OMG, giving him the full beefcake treatment after he beefed up for the role is hilarious. It’s the mockumentary take on a photoshoot. I wish I could understand the interview.

Actors all across Korea are shaking in their boots, knowing that this little girl is doing more than they could ever hope to do in a performance.

Yoon Kye-sang and Yu-na really decided to break everyone’s hearts with the most emotionally-charged scene of the year. And by far the best confession.

@mindy, I’ve also asked @lostpanda about this too, but would you fanfolks of this show do an “it’s over and it was awesome all the way to the end” announcement post or something when it’s through? Or, and I don’t even want to type this, “It all went down in flames; please stay away” post?

        3
        1

Of course!! There is only one episode left so even if it doesn’t end exactly the way I want I can’t see it fumbling too poorly!

I don’t think it’s perfect (the development of some of the side characters leaves much to be desired) but it has such an enormous heart that it’s easy to forgive any of its flaws.

This was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. For Myeong-jun and Hee-ae, of course, but also for Ro-hee. Imagine what she was thinking, witnessing this and knowing that this was the sort of paternal love that she never received as a child and perhaps never will. That Myeong-jun is someone else’s father and not hers. UGH.

The Kidnapping Day: Where they HELL did they find Yu-na and how is she outacting 95% of all actors in the business with zero prior experience???

I know not all child actors get the careers they deserve, but I hope to GOD this girl gets a fruitful career if she decides to continue.

She GUTTED me. Sheesh.

9

I have now realized that she actually does have prior experience BUT MY POINT STILL STANDS

    3

💯% agree. Yu-Na is amazing in Kidnapping Day. Where did they find this gem? She’s more convincing and polished than most adult actresses. I haven’t been this impressed of ANY child actress/actor since Heo-Yool of Mother.

    5

A Good Day to Be a Dog: I just realized that Hae-na says that every time she kisses a MAN she turns into a dog and I think it’s really too bad that they didn’t make her sister gay and brag about how she can kiss all the women she wants without worrying about it lmao.

The way Hae-na shielded Seo-won from the dog was super cute. I also love their candid conversations about things. “We’re not weirdos”. I love it! And the very cute way she gave him the dog keyring “like a vaccine”, ha!

Is Lee Hyun-woo’s character something like a cupid for these two? It’s interesting, and better than your standard second lead! I still don’t like reincarnation romances though.

The editing and song insertion in this show is a bit weird/choppy/rudimentary at times (I’m not a huge fan of the filters/color grading either), but it’s so fluffy and good-natured that I don’t mind. I hope it stays this fluffy (like a dog) throughout!

The Kidnapping Day : e10: Omg, do hospitals in Korea not have locked medication dispensing systems? Especially for MORPHINE? Anyone in the ED can just sneak back and grab some morphine and syringes?

I’m not a fan of what they’re doing with Hye-eun’s character and a couple of other things in this episode but our duo is cute as always and I’m so glad they have roped Detective Park into it too.

5
5

LOL! I noticed that so hard that I missed some of the subsequent action. Seriously?

Hye-eun has gotten less interest as she’s gotten less nuanced. And does she even remember that she has a daughter?

    3
    2

Right?? I was hoping for Hye-eun to be a really interesting character but that sadly does not seem to be the direction they are headed lol.

      1
      0

Did she ever remember she has a daughter, tho?

Even when she was pretending to care about Hee Ae to manipulate Myeong Joon ahjussi, she didn’t go to the hospital unless it was necessary for her plan.

Apparently learning when to shut up is a skill I neither have mastered in real life nor online.

Sorry, Beanies!

What’s happened, Mindy? You sound like you’re in distress. Usually, in these situations, the issue is that the person who has something to say (“can’t shut up”) doesn’t have the power to defend their own back.

Do you need someone to better defend your back? I don’t think that we can probably help, but is there someone who can?

It’s reasonable to feel a little unease at any friction. But if it’s what I think it is, then it’s a rather small one. It’s good to acknowledge it, and move on. You’re good.

When you find someone absolutely, completely insufferable and every other sentence that comes out of their mouth makes you want to tear your hair out (and maybe theirs…) but you have to be pleasant and civil because apparently we live in something called a society.

(Yes, I am MAD right now lol)

I’m watching and loving it as well. Please keep posting. Nothing else at the moment has as much fun and feelz for me. But while I think Beanies are watching, I don’t see much fan wall chatter, not as much Beanie buzz for some reason. Maybe it will pick up as we progress?

Twinkling Watermelon: I don’t know what was funnier, Eun-yu’s reactions to Chung-ah being her friend and being deaf, or her and Eun-gyeol shouting “AHJUMMA” and “AHJUSSHI” at each other LOL.

The fact that Eun-gyeol’s relationship with his parents has more importance than the romance is what I love. Yi-chan went from wanting to be in a band just to impress Se-gyeong to going to Eun-gyeol’s school to serenade him. Not to mention how absolutely sweet it is to see Eun-gyeol teaching his mom sign language!

I love all the 90s Korean songs in this show, too. 💖

That serenade scene is my second fave. It has lots going on but because its for Eun Gyeol bumps it up.
(My fave is the one with Eun Gyeol and Chung Ah)

I just saw a preview of Castaway Diva on tvN’s instagram with Lee Re playing baby Park Eun-bin and I had NO clue she would be in it and I am even MORE excited.

I love this girl to bits!!

Twinkling Watermelon: I like the magical La Vida Music shop. It’s so whimsical! The guitar being strummed whenever the door opens or closes is 💯.

The nonchalant way Eun-yu is just like “I guess I’ll just die!” is weird, not gonna lie. It seems less like she’s actively suicidal and more like it’s an angsty adolescent urge. But given her method of suicide (which of course won’t end up working) and the fact that the is clearly frustrated with life, it doesn’t really matter. It’s definitely something she could easily do without chickening out, and that’s terrifying.

Eun-yu is a MUCH savvier time traveler than Eun-gyeol is. It drives me crazy when time travelers act so stupid when they travel to the past, and I’m glad Eun-yu was smart enough to pick up on it quickly and adjust accordingly. What a rarity!

Is that really Choi Hyun-wook’s handwriting?! It’s so pretty and perfect it looks like print omg.

This episode lacking Eun-gyeol made me realize I find all 3 of the other characters and actors more engaging. Even so, I missed his presence and his interactions with Yi-chan and Eun-yu. I loved how much he got under Yi-chan’s skin. The little missing person posters he put up were so cute!

I’m still not entirely sure how Eun-yu plans on preventing her mom and dad from getting together if they’re both in the US still, though. Does she plan on disappearing and pretending to go back to the US and then have her mom’s first love search out her real mom?

If this is how he loses his hearing… on one hand, I’m glad Eun-gyeol’s purpose for traveling back in time wasn’t “prevent my dad from becoming deaf”. On the other hand, it is awfully convenient that it happened RIGHT when Eun-gyeol just so happened to go back to the present. I hope there is a good explanation for that.

I like how NewJeans playing is the signifier that it’s 2023 again LOL.

5

I noticed the perfect handwriting too!

I loved that 🎵 “guitar as a doorbell” 🎵 idea.

    Perfect for a music shop!

Or could Yi-chan lose his hearing precisely because Eun-gyeol travelled back in time (and YC was looking for him and thus got into the fight)?
