After a bit of reflection, I’ve decided to leave the site. Now, you may be thinking, why doesn’t she shut the door on the way out (and I will :-). But I’ve always wondered where some of my favorite Beanies have gone—and I don’t want to leave the same mystery.

Bottom line, I think my values don’t align with a good too many Beanies. I have said it’s important to hold space in the commons, but to hear my views being described as mindless screaming and see others support that was just too dispiriting.

And I realized because I am part of the struggles against sexism, homophobia, ageism, any form of discrimination, in the real world, I need spaces that affirm my resolve, not drain me of it.

So, it’s been fun Beanies. Keep enjoying the dramas (without the drama ;-). I will too.

    Gosh Indy, NOOOOOO!!!
I haven’t been on the site too often these days. I don’t know what transpired. But sorry you felt this way and feel the need to leave. I have greatly enjoyed your thoughts and spazzing together with you. You were fun, sensible and easy to chat with.
I hope you will reconsider after taking a break. But if it’s been too much, I understand. Your well being comes first. Will definitely miss you 😢
If you ever decide to come back, please do. We will always be here.

Thank you Blue. I’ve enjoyed our interactions too. I noted you’ve arrived upon a sustainable approach to drama watching and beaning. I hope you’ll keep on spazzing here for a long time to come. 🤗

Oh gosh, thats so sad to hear this happened on our ‘safe’ site, this is not ok. Please do take care I hope you have a way to keep in touch with any beanies you did connect with if that’s what you want. Hopefully the positive memories will stay with you longer than the negative ones.

Keep fighting for the rights of the silenced and enjoying all that is good about K-dramas.

Thank you Mother Bean. You are always one of the most supportive Beanies.

I have no one to blame but myself for engaging with others who hold different values. But a wise Beanie connected the use of “meaningless screaming” to the accusation of hysteria women and other marginalized communities often faced by people dismissing their concerns. And that really rung a bell. In my work, it’s what we hear from violent families, corrupt police and indifferent officials. Of course, this is not the same, not at all, but that dismissiveness probably triggered a response when normally there would not have been one.

Anyway, no one on the site benefits from that exchange, including myself. I should put that energy to use in the real world. And I know you and others Beanies will keep DB a positive space in an often toxic Internet. Take care.

It saddens me to see this and I deeply apologize for if or when I may have contributed to your experience to have prompted you to come to this decision today. It’s just not right. No excuses.
You will be missed, and as some other Beanies have said, you’re always welcome back, and I also hope you have a way to keep in touch with the Beanies whom you’ve otherwise been able to connect with during your time here! ♥️

Your commentary and wit always brightens my day Indy! I selfishly don’t want you to leave but I can understand if this site is no longer bringing you joy and instead draining you. Your presence has undoubtedly made dramabeans a better place and your absence will be sorely missed. I hope you are well, and I’ll definitely be watching dramas with you in spirit ♥️

I’m very sorry to hear this, too. I value your eloquent insights as well as the lighthearted silly interactions we had, and I will always remember our super fun live watch of the DWY finale. 🫰🫰🫰

Indy you are indeed one of my most favorite Beanies. ❤ I have only ever got  encouragement and support from you.

It would be an understatement to say that I am shocked to read your post. I have always greatly respected your views which you always choose to express in a dignified manner. I don’t know the context but I’m truly sorry that you had to take this decision, which you would not have done lightly. I too selfishly don’t want you to go.

If possible do come back. It has truly been a pleasure and honor interacting with you. Please be well, slay IRL and enjoy the dramas.

    Hwaiting!!

You missed that kerfuffle! I am shocked. 😊

But seriously, thank you Cera. We’ve had lots of fun interactions. I will definitely miss all the great Beanies I’ve met. I hope the CW goes well and Rain’s latest outing will be all that you wanted and more.

Oh wow Indy, this is disheartening indeed. Although I’m not aware of the exchange you’re referencing, I do understand the need for online places that are affirming rather than draining. It’s truly a challenge to find them these days. It seems many Beanies here are sharing a similar reaction to your experience, so I do hope that helps to soften the unpleasantness. You will be missed!

    4

Yes, that might well be. People just disappear and I always wonder. But I know some Beanies have been able to craft a positive space for themselves within DB, and you will be among them.

I’m sure you align with more people on this site than not—but for our mental health and longevity, we also don’t engage here as much. It doesn’t mean we don’t engage though. See you on the inter webs on another server or site perhaps. 😉

    4
    1

Are they? It may be my current low, but I have my doubts. But thank you for saying so. I’m hoping while many might be silent, they are there. And, yes, perhaps if I had reduced my engagement, my longevity on the site might have been higher. Sigh. Darn hindsight. But I’m glad you figured out the balance.

I’m rarely here anymore (see your own reasons and some more of my own), but I do hope you are able to hop in once in awhile, and/or find another space that isn’t so – so – well, just another part of the internet that fuels anger and anxiety about the world.

    4
    1

Thanks so much. We haven’t interacted much, and now I know why.

While I never say never, it’s somehow fitting my first fan wall post was in shock after another Beanie called me a corrupt Western feminist (one out three are true) and my last will be after I’ve supposedly been mindlessly screaming about ageism (one out three again!).

I hope you’ve found a better space among the wilds of the Internet. Dramas are so much better with community, but one you’re more aligned with.

    Hello!

I’m so sorry to hear that you feel this way, but I’m all for choosing whatever works for us at each moment. Take all the time you need, and I look forward to us meeting again. :))

I haven’t watched a lot of K shows these days, but I come back to read my fellow Beans’ comments from time to time! And I miss some of my very favorite beans here, too. Take care, Indyfan, wherever you go.

Awww Indy! I’m so sorry to hear that. You always added to the fun with that Taec drama that only had like 12-14 episodes, and while I don’t think we watched many of the same dramas since, at least at the same time, I always enjoyed your posts and perspectives. You’re very thoughtful and kind. Many of us are sad to see you go!

Putting yourself first is always the right move though. It’s a shame there are people who want to invalidate anyone else’s opinions. There are real people out there who have to face these issues and DB should be a safe space to discuss different sides and just agree to disagree

    Definitely wishing you well!!

    3
    1

Thank you for the kind words. I like how we gently approach that Taec drama still. In 💔, we found community. I hope we both find another drama as engaging without the disappointment that eventually wrought. If I do, I’ll be thinking of you. 🤗

That was an experience haha, but definitely brought out the best sides of DB too 😄

I hope so too, and same here! I know there will be more dramas like that (with better endings lol)

        Wishing you the best Indy!

    @indyfan
I realized because I am part of the struggles against sexism, homophobia, ageism, any form of discrimination, in the real world, I need spaces that affirm my resolve, not drain me of it.

I was as shocked to see that exchange as you were. I will be truly, deeply sorry to see you go. You are one of the first beanies I connected with, and I have loved your insights. I understand sometimes it gets overwhelming and makes you vulnerable, and perhaps it would help to step back.

I had a similar experience, and I spoke about it with people I consider friends, and found out I am not alone. I have never understood the concept of personal attacks when views do not match and I am so sorry for your experience.

I don’t know if there is anything I can say to have you change your mind, but at least for me the site won’t be same without you. Please consider taking a break instead of completely leaving it.

It is great you found a space to process your experience. It turns out this post is not only to say goodbye, but process mine a little bit.

And I also want to thank you chipping in on the recap even tho we were all collectively labeled as mindlessly screaming about ageism and sadly, so many agreed with that.

I do know emotions fade so who knows what the future holds, but after feeling repeatedly rankled, perhaps DB just isn’t the healthiest space for me. But thank you for the good times. I will miss those, and all the Beanies who made them happen. 😘

I have a question about The Atypical Family ending, and I don’t want to wait till the recap. Question in the comment below to avoid spoilers:

1

So, if I am to understand this correctly, while he is holding the collapsing wall in yet another fire, Present Day (2024) Gwi-ju goes back in time to save Past Day (2011?) Da-hae from the high-school fire. He can’t save his colleague, but he does her. But he does not return to the Present because his then unborn son will in 2029 go back to 2011 to bring him directly to 2029?

It makes sense because that’s why they have a funeral without his body in present day, as Mama Bok foretold/dreamt, as well as her many other predictions. But why didn’t he return to 2024 himself? He’s returned to dangerous scenarios before (for example, his wife’s car crash).

    3
    2

At first I thought he had to come back in the last second (because he didn’t die), but I didn’t understand why he didn’t appear in the same place in 2024 after the fire. It was as if he was trapped in time.
But now it makes sense that it was his son who saved him. There are much to talk about that child’s power. It’s amazing.

      4
      1

Yeah, his son saved him. I guess I still don’t understand why he couldn’t save himself by coming back to 2024. He came back to the car, for example, a few minutes later after his wife crashed. By that logic, he might just return back after the wall collapsed and just get hot feet or something. 🙂

At the moment, I just have the circular time loops of the drama. The future dictates the past. Maybe that’s it.

        3
        2

I guess he couldn’t come back because in that very moment his son took him to the future 🤔
So he was right when he told Ina that he would come back. He didn’t know it yet, but he was right.

          3
          1

Oh that makes sense. His son snatched him just in time. He is still sweaty, sooty and dusty. Anyway, awesome superpower of the son, he did not even have to ‘travel’ he was just there. Now wait until he gets interested in dinosaurs.

            1
            0

I think the implication was that he died in 2011 so he couldn’t come back to 2024. And, as we saw in the bicycle teaching trip, things from the past can hurt him, which is mildly infuriating, because before he could only interact with the door and Da Hae and now suddenly everything can hurt him and he can die in the past. His son goes back to 2011 and brings him back to 2030(?)

          1
          4

Maybe his song doesn’t need to go back (or can’t go back), but he can bring him back in his last second.

            1
            0

Yes, I suppose he could have also died back in 2011 if his son hadn’t saved him so in a way, he was fated to miss those five(?) years in the closed time loop logic of the drama. @ceciliedk

I tell you tho. I’m also impressed you found this old post! (Old by the quick moving fan wall standards :).

            3
            0

Is this an old post? I am new here. I just finished watching the drama and needed a place to vent and process what was a real missed opportunity of a premise IMO.

            1
            0

No, no @mreverything It’s just that comments on old fan wall posts are hard to find as they do not come up as comments on the rest of the site do, no matter how old, on the Beanies page https://www.dramabeans.com/beanies/ or the comment stream https://www.dramabeans.com/comments/

However, the Beanie who made the fan wall post (me) or whose reply you fall under (Isa) or who is tagged (such as Cecilie) will be notified when you comment. It’s all a bit confusing at first. But hopefully this odd system will make sense soon.

DB is a great place to process our drama thoughts. I also vented, but on the WWW post. Welcome from a relative newbie. 🤗

            2
            0

I do not think it was made clear from when his son fetched him from. Could be 2024 or 2011. The show did not explicitly mention that. Maybe stuff for season 2?

      4
      3

You’re right. It didn’t. How would the son even know to get to that moment (unless crazy time traveling powers). But I assumed because he was wearing those same clothes and his face was a bit sooty as if from a fire. He was pretty grungy for much of the show tho anyway. LOL.

        Season 2? Ooh, I hadn’t heard that.

        1
        3

          I don’t think there is a Season 2. But it’s on Netflix, so maybe…

          2
          0

Have not heard too, just a conjecture on my part.

          1
          0

We must assume it happens very intuitively from the son’s side, or he would totally get lost. They hadn’t even talked about where, geographically, to get him. So I suppose it’s more like when you give a dog something to sniff and the dog runs and finds that person whereever they are.
But it would have been much better if Gwi-ju had cooperated with Dong-hee and had come back just by leaving the memory. Or taking a detour via another, more safe memory.

          1
          0

Da-Hae asked their son if he could bring his father back from 18 years ago. So 2011.

        3
        1

My husband joked that she wanted the younger, hotter version, but I told him it’s literally the same version

          4
          2

Well, she was quite a bit younger than him m. So they more matched age-wise now. How often does that happen! 😅

            2
            0

😂😂😂 She wanted a few years where she could date, not for money, just for … getting to know the world outside the sauna a bit … and then have her big love back at a time when he would be closer to her age. Win-win!

            1
            0

I think it was 2011, it would have been easier to save him from that scenario versus the 2024 one

        2
        0

I’ve finally caught up to this rather Atypical Drama. This is why it pays to listen to Beanie wisdom: This is fresh! A few highlights from recent episodes:

• An amazing scene that juxtaposes In-a’s power both taking away her mother and bringing back her father (tho not fully, but that’s for the recap.)
.

.
• Isn’t this the worst invitation to sleep together? 😂
.

.
• I wanted to screenshot Dong-hee and Grace. But @CecilieDK already did a great job of that on her fanwall and expressed our collective desire for them to fly, fly away from their wretched families. Please do well by Dong-hee, pretty please. My final grade depends on it.

This is lovely. And I have something extra for you, wait a few seconds and come to my wall, then.

    1
    1

I have to admit C that I think the show only sees them as two lonely, undervalued women forming an unexpected alliance that is turning into a deep friendship. In other worlds it might have come to more, but I don’t think the show is deliberately baiting us.

      3
      1

I am pretty sure the show is doing that; or, you can define it in different ways: That they are gay baiting, as it is called, giving just a hint of content to get those lovely double-income-no-kids money, or that they in a system that doesn’t allow much wriggle room still manages to tell some of those untold story for those who have eyes for it. Or maybe they are actually telling that story this one time.
But there is so much of those two first versions, however you interpret it, going on in SK dramas, so it would be a surprise if they hadn’t thought about it here.
However that may be, I don’t seem first and foremost two lonely and undervalued women – though they are – I see two remarkably strong and resourceful women with a knowing eye on their surroundings. Women who can – in whatever friendly or more relation they will get to have – give each other, as we say in Danish, “a comb for their hair”, something to work with: They will not be bored having each other to agree and disagree with.

        1
        1

I don’t feel a sexual frisson btwn the two so that’s why I don’t consider it queer-baiting. But chemistry is in the eye of the beholder.

I didn’t say they were only lonely, undervalued women. Only that it is what brought them together. But, yes, they also have deep strengths. And something beneficial to both will develop out of this relationship, whatever you want to call it.

      1

Yeah, I don’t really agree with the recapper a lot of times. I think that this is a drama that will be very polarizing. I don’t think anyone will watch it and be like “meh.” It does some very interesting, risky, and imo even kinda subversive things

        4

Oh my. I see what you mean about polarizing! But I’m in your boat. Let’s ride those rough waters together. 😂

You’re so kind @reply1988 and @seeker but to be honest, I don’t follow the levels so I don’t know what they mean and when I reach them!

I will be enjoying the view for a while though. I haven’t been as active recently but hopefully that’ll change.

            3
            0

Hopefully there will be more dramas pulling you into the comments and having fun on your fan wall.

The levels are just a fun way to reward your comments by levelling you up at random times. They are named after features that pop up in K dramas like the Candy type of female lead, or the Errand boy role from Healer, rooftop homes feature in so many dramas etc.

            2
            0

Thank you @reply1988 I did see a long explanation once (Sic’s?) and I do see the celebrations pop up now and then.

It’s really a question of time for me recently. Because I’m actually having a pretty good drama year. That said, not even these good dramas have pulled me in deep into commenting like Heartbeat and DWY did last year despite all their flaws.

            3
            0

Yes Sic had the full explanation and list of the levels.
I am glad the dramas are there it’s just time. It is fascinating how some dramas effect our comment rate more than others.

            2
            0

That is such as astute point Indy. 😅 Sometimes when we are enjoying a drama we may comment less and comment more about dramas we are not enjoying. Just to discuss and understand if our bewilderment at where the drama is headed is shared by the others or if our views of the drama are justified. Sometimes it is the opposite.

Ultimately it is all about meaningful interactions with Beanies world over. 😍 Levels as @Reply1988 said is just a fun game.

🚂 Toot! Toot! 🚂 A little late, but I finally caught the The Midnight Train to Hagwon. Next stop, Romance.

How does this show manage to be oh so slow yet somehow dripping in so much dramatic tension that it’s hard to watch at times? Who needs chaebol machinations or palace politics when you have SK’s education system? Thankfully, we now have the promised romance, both too slow yet somehow too fast, to give us some much needed relief.

Of course, given this PD’s track record, it’s all going to blow up. And I have my niggles too. But at the moment, I’m all aboard this ship train.

.

12
14

I thought about lightening this gif, but this is how we actually view it. The show’s as dark as other Beanies have said, like literally, we’re straining to see what’s going on. LOL.

    6
    0

I love that the show generates tension based on the very real (and sometimes difficult to answer) question of what constitutes a meaningful life well-lived and what one is willing to do to pursue it. As you said — no need for chaebols or left state ministers for manufactured drama. Instead, the leads, particularly Hye-jin, have to confront they want out of life. The Gray Queen pursued power and respect. Hye-jin to this point has chosen stability — but has that really been a choice or something that became a habit? And yet, she knows that deviating from that path will bring up more questions, conundrums for which there is no easy “right” answer, but rather a process of weighing what she can live with and what she can’t.

    7
    2

That’s a wonderful analysis. In order to achieve what she did, the Gray Queen (I like that much better than the Witch moniker) also paid a price. Hye-jin faces similar choices, with the added complications of a romance (which, I’m to imagine the GQ forewent?). I know I was excited about WJh coming in, but Jrw has caught my attention. It’s really her character’s story.

I haven’t read the recaps yet as I didn’t want to spoil it. But looking forward to catching up and joining.

        LOL. True, true.

And I’ll admit the red glow in the dark rooms adds a certain intimacy, a layer to the frisson as they cross the barrier that divides them.

I just have eye strain from trying to make out what’s happening in certain scenes. 😂

        4
        2

Yea, I don’t understand such directorial styles. It’s like, the viewers can’t even see a dang thing, what makes you think we’re going to even understand anything or even feel the emotions we’re suppose to feel during a scene when we can’t even see??? 🔦

          1
          0

I just rewatched the ending scene now, at midnight, and still all I could see was red and black when they had the camera on Joon Ho. LOL

          2
          1

At Midnight…I see how you slipped that in.

Maybe it’s just a good excuse to rewatch the scene a few times, or close our eyes and just listen to Wjh’s voice… 😊

So…I sat down to take a quick peak at the The Impossible Heir premiere and got up two hours later. Ha! It’s quite the ride, already filled with angst, betrayal and heartbreak. Sign me da up! 😂

Unfortunately, I do see issues already that might split the Beanieverse. Keeping 🤞🏽 I stay on the ride.

Indy … your choice is impeccable. Have you ever watched a drama on which Beans are NOT divided. 🤔 😃

    5
    1

Ha! Is there any show Beanies are not divided over? I mean, we just had the post the other day about the one drama everyone loved and you hated. It racked up the replies. 😀

      (Welcome back.)

      5
      2

Gah. Hulu’s doing one-per-day!! US folks won’t catch up to you until tomorrow…boo. I wanna talk about it!!

        2
        1

Oh no! Why would they do that? And only US?

I kept my post spoiler free. So we can discuss in recap by when I hope both have dropped for everyone. 🤗

          2
          2

Well, sorry, that was egocentric of me–everywhere where access is Hulu and not Disney+ (which may include America’s Hat (Canada) and America’s Trousers (Mexico)). THOSE ARE JOKES.

            Moving on.

I definitely wasn’t complaining about the post/spoilers. I’m complaining that I can’t join in today!!! It says episode 2 comes out at 2am tomorrow.

So, as someone who’s watched…sound like I should wait to binge tomorrow if they’re that good???

            2
            0

I didn’t think that was anything centric! In fact, you were specific and yet I asked again! Oops.

            Moving on.

No, it’s not all good, in fact some parts… But it rang my bell tho I wonder for how long.

            3
            0

🤔 Huh! Which is this drama that I hated that I don’t even know about. And er, … where did I go that I’m being welcomed back. I’m confused. 😳

        2
        1

Oh no, no. My use of the pronoun was confusing. It wasn’t directed at you. I was thinking of that post, where folks got to share the dramas they hated but which many Beanies love. Just goes to show, while there may be someone for every drama, but there’s no drama for everyone: https://www.dramabeans.com/members/redfox/activity/1542245/

But anyhoos, I think you saw it. And I don’t know why I thought I hadn’t seen you for a bit. I guess I was wrong. Sorry.

          1
          6

Ah! No worries. That was a really great prompt in the post. 😍 The “fun” part about art is some people “get it” and some just don’t but ALL are right. 👍♥️

Maybe we’re just hanging in different places in DB for eg you’ll rarely see me in recaps. 😭

            1
            0

Apropos nothing – which was the last (largely) harmonious recap you saw.

            1
            0

You ask great questions. However, one reason I’m mostly in the recaps is that I have a *terrible* memory. But of the current recaps, I’d say FxC? What say you?

            1
            0

Also, I’ll note the largely harmonious ones are often less trafficked. Witness FxC. I guess we all want a bit of drama in our recaps too. 😂

            1
            0

Indy you’re the best “we all want a bit of drama in our recaps too”!! 😭

Now I’ll have to come by to FxC to “stir the pot”. 😆 Let’s do the two Impossible dramas first.

            1
            0

By “terrible” memory you mean you need a refresher for what you saw?

I loved the Uncanny Counter 2 recaps which we all finished only for the recapper Unit who was the best. I love recaps btw and I think DB’s recapper are awesome!! Alathe has a special place in my heart because of Alchemy of Souls.

            1
            0

I liked it too. I knew I would have issues with someone being hurt in the triangle. I hope it does not get too dark so I can stay post the four episodes test.

    2
    1

Yup, I was thinking of the triangle too (among a few other things). It wasn’t very well done IMHO. I’m hoping #3-4 sidestep some of the pitfalls rather than dig into them, because I obvs I liked the drama quite a bit.

      2

Knight Flower #11 amped up the romance and suspense! (And not forgotten the comedy either @kurama). All set for the finale but I\’m so gonna miss this show. @dncingemma they\’re gonna need those 85 minutes!

Also, how is dramaland giving me the most intense romantic moments (CtK) and the most sweetest all in one week? Gah.
.

11
31

I don’t really like the fact the romance is developping in the epilogues 😅

    6
    2

While I love our leads and how they are conveying the emotional depths of their feelings, this drama is being ridiculously conservative in keeping them so chaste. I understand the historical context and the constraints but even the other widow got more action than our leads. After all, our female lead is sui generis yet she can’t even give and get a proper hug let alone something more intimate?

    6
    2

      KISS KISS KISS KISS

      3
      2

You couldn’t have said it better. Well, you could by your usual wonderful standard but those 4 words are what was called for here!.
Epilogue!!! And, not dead fish kissing.

        2
        1

LOL. That takes me back to Heartbeat. But at least that was midway thru the drama.

        2
        2

Indy, I thought the same. Back to last July, for the drama we shall not name but you did! How much fun we had and then, a reminder: we can’t have good things.

          1
          1

I didn’t think of it as an either/or. But yeah 🙁

I just remembered LFIS also gave us a rather chaste couple.

            2
            0

I see/get why conservative viewers who like to see/imagine women’s ‘purity’ as a sine quo non of their worldviews like KDs but it continues to irritate/confound me that even when a woman such as Yeohwa who is portrayed as an iconoclast: a fighter who is daring, humorous, competent and compassionate, the patriarchal chains don’t come off. After all, this is inspirational and aspirational fiction but the creative imagination has to stop at the doorstep of ridiculous and regressive chasteness.

          2
          0

I hear you Emma. I’d want them covering all the bases by now given the choices. What a waste of hay!

But I think I resigned myself a few episodes back and so with much lower expectations, I’m able to cope with what’s been given, esp. because within those constraints, the ML at least is giving it his 100%.

Or perhaps more importantly, the romance in CtK is so intense, that I don’t think I could handle two such shows. LOL. So the intensity of one balances out the other, if that makes sense.

      6
      3

Oh, poop. CtL is all TENSION but it’s no “first 10 minutes of episode 13 of Call It Love!!!”

        2
        1

I’m not naming names, but there’s a whole lot of chatter why that might be the case, or at least one reason. 😂

          1
          2

It does for sure. I am not watching CtK so I wanted more intensity. I too love how wonder the ML has been. Lee Honee is the foundation and has carried the comedic and action weight but Lee Jongwon has been such a soulful and emotionally expressive foil to her and others.

I was hoping it’d end at the watermill. Lady Baek at least got to embrace her man.

    Seon-ha’s Belated Beanie Review

It is not a beloved drama. I liked parts of it and really didn’t like others. It is way better in the first half than the second, as with so many! There are any number of talented performers in it, not always inhabiting their meatiest role. I watched, as one might, to see Namkoon Min play an actual romantic lead. He does it better in My Dearest.

If you look closely you’ll find my little screen avatar, tho!!

    2
    1

Say it ain’t so, Seon-haaaaa! Cos the only thing powering me thru the early episodes is NKM’s charm. But even that only lasts so long.

“If you look closely you’ll find my little screen avatar, tho!!”
What’s this? I’m clueless as always.

      3
      1

The little thing to the left of my screen name that sort of looks like a Starbucks logo? I clipped it out of an Undateables episode. You’ll almost certainly see it. It’s pretty funny.

        3
        2

That’s too funny. I was thinking of just closing my eyes and letting NKM’s voice just wash all over me. I will reconsider.

          4
          1

No, you have the right idea. My little joke happens very early on anyway.

            2
            0

Thank you for explaining your avatar logo as I always wondered about it. I watched the undateables years ago so can’t remember the context of the logo.

          2
          1

I watched it, and still missed it! But I zoned out a lot before dropping the drama.

            2
            0

Hmmmm. It was a very a below average drama. I stayed for 8 episodes. Even that was painfully boring.

If you want to see an older drama of his ‘ Beautiful Gong Shim’ is a better choice.

    4
    2

      Agree!

      5
      1

Oh dear. I dropped BGS. Perhaps I am doomed to rewatch My Dearest highlight reels.

I wonder if I’ll ever love an actor enough to sit thru a painful drama.

        5
        3

Ha! I watched this when it aired and I remember liking it. Not sure if it aged well.
I have never finished a single NKM drama including My Dearest (I never started season 2).

Ji Sung is that actor for me. I watch anything he is in. Good bad and the ugly 😇

          6
          2

Excluding Beautiful Gong Shim I.e. somehow I have missed most of his projects. He never called me as an actor and that has changed since MD. Hope his next project is good!

            6
            0

You are a better fan than I am! I couldn’t do it, not even for Junho.

This would make a good drama chat I think 🙂

I also don’t like many of the genres NKM appears in. But it does go to show his range. Unfortunately, I’ll likely pass his next.

            4
            0

well there is that drama that catapulted him to fame and then there was no turning back.. and he plays a negative role..

sthg to do with female lead sees smells and there is a serial killer going around killing women.. he was a chef in that

          4
          1

Thanks. Negative roles can be scene-stealing (hello, mmh!). But not my mood atm. I will keep it in my reserves for sure.

            4
            0

Me too, I tried it a couple of times but didn’t get past the first couple of episodes. I liked Hot stove league and Chief Kim tho. I don’t do serious sageuks so didn’t see My dearest.

          2
          1

I struggle with non-romantic sports dramas but one day I’ll get to HSL. But I liked Chief Kim too.

            2
            0

I tried The Undateables but I dropped it in the middle of the first episode 😅
However, I watched Beautiful Gong Shim from start to finish. My major complaint with that drama is something which happens in the very end.

      4
      1

I think I barely finished this one, used the ff button a lot. I have a hard time with his past dramas, even though I tried. The baseball one was okish, but I finished it. Awaken was the one that I found more interesting of all that I tried. Couldn’t finish the Chief one, on shelf (forever?) at ep 7 and BGS even earlier. I will never watch the Veil one, too ridiculous pumped up in that one. And probably his negative roles also. Amd the One dollar lawyer. It seems to me that in MD he finaly could become the character and the others were his learning stones. But probably it’s me, that I prefer sageuks and the roles they play. Probably is the hair knot with the head band that makes them so much more attractive, which is weird because I don’t normaly like long hair.
But then there is JJS who I am going crazy, insane even, over him in JI. That whole show is unbelievable, love the whole cast also. I had no idea that was him in The Face Reader. I will even watch the hospital ones for him, although I don’t like medical shows.

I have to come out of my Covid isolation to say I was just blown away by Captivating the King #8. No spoilers, but what an episode! How am I supposed to sleep after this? 😭

15
29

if picture is the scene that impacted you so much, preview would have killed you 😛 ..

king respected his astrological , star alignment for the “event”

    1
    3

😂 Indeed. But it wasn’t the deed per se. It’s all the tension and buildup and power play… and I’m so glad this farcical charade is over. If he still hadn’t guessed it after handling her, then the king would have lost all my respect!

      3
      1

Power Play yeah.. thats perfectly summed but i guess eventually he put power aside and felt relieved that he is still in women n not men (last kiss had this loosened up king)

        1
        1

I found even her kiss a power move, or at least something more complex. If she’d asked for anything else, she might have been dead.

          2
          1

correct.. the kiss initiation on her part was not some innocent kiss

We’re all in different time zones so not sure where your today is. 😅 But it’s two episodes on Sunday night KST. It’s an interesting move esp during the lunar year. I hope it pays off.

Covid is terrible. The isolation makes it that much worse. Sending all healing thoughts your way.

K-dramas are here for you even faster than the “speed of thought,” however!!! That’s a silver lining we can all get behind.

    4
    1

lol.. so i am not alone questioning myself how to sleep after this and then wait for whole week to see whats next… i was kind of blown away by his acting prowess.. the build the tension was rising by each passing second but the way he managed it all (with kingly persona) he is exceptional actor.. always loved him but now loving him much more than before..

    4
    1

No wait! Two more episodes Sunday night. Yay!

I am not as familiar with him. I didn’t love him in Jealousy Incarnate, but that could have been his character. So maybe he just acted well. 😀 Here he’s doing so well. I am converted.

    Age and experience matters 😉

Wishing you a speedy recovery! 🤗

    3
    1

Thank you! And to age and experience, I’d add a mustache! 😂

I’m not usually a fan but the facial hair really suits him. It sort of sharpens and gives definition to his face.

      4
      0

Came on dbs simply to find someone remarking on the final moments of this episode. Intense. Sharing your wonderings 😆 🤣 😂 I do hope we get another episode soooon. Can’t imagine waiting until next week. I’m just guessing though that because it’s only episode 8, there’s much to follow that will be troubling.

    3

How are you doing. I hope you’re feeling better now.

    1
    0

Good time as any to get some drama watching under your belt. If this is your first Jo Jung-suk I can’t imagine you not being instantly awed by his acting prowess. You’ve chosen a good drama. 😊

    1
    0

Also … off-topic but didn’t you ever consider changing your display name … maybe to what you’re watching or thinking or feeling. Quite a few Beans have some interesting names pop up from time to time. 😂

    1
    1

You’re all so cool when you do that. But my imagination is more limited I’m afraid. Perhaps one day, brilliance will strike.

And thank you for asking. I’m better but not 💯. It’s been great to catch up on dramas and DB again tho. (Well, mostly. I have not liked some of the dust-ups.)

And for JJS, if I hadn’t disliked his Don’t Dare to Dream character initially (similar to OMG), I would not have been able to resist his charm later on. (Because, wow that.) But I did like him in Familiar Wife. I want to try Nokdu Flower soon.

Now, my off-topic, I see you a lot on the fan walls, but not so much recaps?

      1
      4

Health first – so do take a lot of care. I know at times it is difficult for us to imagine that we can operate at anything but 100% but its really important to “listen” to your body. Hope you’ll feel good, better and best soon, sooner and soonest!! 💖

        0
        0

Display name / emojis are just a fun game. And please I’ve read your comments and I would categorize them as brilliant, especially in the recaps.

Since most recaps and Weekly Threads are denigrating into situations best described by leetennant as – not playing chess with a pigeon – I try to maintain my distance. Even with dramas I really enjoy and would like to discuss at times even an innocent comment triggers an avalanche. 🤷‍♀️

You’re in for a treat with Nokdu Flower. IsaGC and Babylilo are big fans and would love to chat with you about it.

        0

To conclude – I wish you the speediest of recoveries, take care, be healthy (also wealthy 🤭), watch interesting dramas and let’s chat about whatever strikes your fancy. 💕

        1

Aw thanks, health too often takes the backseat until it fails you.

I have a love-hate with recaps. Sometimes it can go really deep and rewarding (I’m totally digging a pointless, minor character analysis in CtK atm 😊) and sometimes right off the deep end. So I understand the desire to avoid them.

Fan wall does seem like a more fun place. Sometimes I’m also more frequent there than the recaps. But I dunno about this instance. Apologies, tho I agree with the critique having had my own run-ins, that very public put-down and pile-on was kind of harsh as another Beanie said.

          1
          4

Basically I come to DB to de-stress… like I’m sure many others. It is great to read about and appreciate another person’s perspective which may be different or even totally opposite of our own. But this melee is just WAE!

            1
            0

It is hilarious considering I joined in the first place for recaps. 🤷‍♀️

Indeed. Like many others, it took me a long time to even find the fan wall, never mind understand it and finally post. But, yes, let’s remember to have fun and share our love of dramas which brought so many of us here. 😘

I\’m on the fence with the Queen of Divorce, but these lines. Whomp!

9
10

I’m not sure I can get past the proffered “reason” for Director Kim’s violence towards his wife—or at least that his violence alone wasn’t sufficient grounds for divorce. It could be social commentary, yes, but if so, it seems incompletely done to me.

I also note that this drama is probably not gonna get recapped here unless there’s a change of heart due to “public outcry.” (No image below and the post is a “first impressions”).

    2
    2

I thought they’d lied and said both parties had committed violence against each other, complete with fake evidence, no? Tho given it wasn’t too long ago that the SK supreme court reprimanded an actress for publicly coming out as a victim of DV, I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t considered enough. I don’t know.

And you’re right. I don’t think it’ll be recapped. But if it’s interesting, I’ll “hangout.” 🙂 Weekday pickings be slim.

      3
      1

Yeah, no, that didn’t end up being the main reason the divorce was granted…

        2
        0

      Public outcry? What’s going on?

I couldn’t believe the Clintons were still in the Korean public memory.

      3
      1

I think Seon-ha meant sometimes there’s a public outcry when a show isn’t being recapped, and that spurs the powers that be to recap.

I didn’t see any clamor for this to be recapped, but it looks like it will be! Probably interest from the recapper.

        4

It’s one of those dramas you just watch because watching chaebols go down is fun right? I don’t expect much but I think the leads and the good team is charming.
Chaebols – I mean you can’t but side eye the ones that have a dining table in a 2000 sq ft. room?

LOL. For sure, there’s no better signal of chaebol entitlement than a single dining table in a ballroom sized room.

But I dunno Blue. While I’ve certainly wasted 16 hours in a far worse ways than watching an over-the-top chaebol takedown, somehow I thought this was gonna be a fun legalesque drama. Maybe we’ll get that next week now that the agency has been set up?

Ofc in the end there will be a final showdown with said chaebols. Perhaps in that room? It’s certainly got the room for it.

      2
      1

I thought this is a 12 episoder. Otherwise I wouldn’t have started it. There is never enough meat to fill 16 episodes for such drama.
        Just checked. Yes it’s 12.

The chaebol abs guy is so dumb so far. But that mother is a worthy opponent.

Oh, I just assumed. Phew. I like this 12-episode trend.

Methinks the villains in Marry My Husband are scene stealers. Ah, that bloody lick. She was so baaad, she was delicious.

But our unintentionally hilarious protagonists were almost iconic, don\’t you think? Just needed minor tweaks.

They were both so serious and earnest. I get we’re supposed to feel the emotional weight, but those lines 😂

I want him to be my solid land too. But did you see how much he was shaking? LOL. Maybe the water was cold or something.

      3

I was confused after a while about the vibe – were they going for serious-serious or serious cheesy or something in between or neither. 😂

        2

I suspect, serious-serious. But the result…well, every Beanie will decide for themselves. 😀

          4

I thought so too but yeah maybe it was a bit of a misfire. 🤣 Since I am feeling rather generous today I will happily go along as if the scene had gravitas worthy of Namkoong Min. 😊

Ooh. I see you’ve just begun so I don’t want to spoil it for you. But know #1 was the worst (so far) for me. It gets better. It’s a whole another vibe from PMR tho. At moments I wish it was a bit more tongue in cheek, but it’s doing its own thing well enough. Hope you enjoy!

@attiton my friend, I think you cottoned on to a plot point with your last Marry My Husband post on the dangers of ML\’s boozy lifestyle!

I wasn\’t quite thrilled with episode five, but six—with its swoony moments, delicious villainy and satisfying revenging—was almost, dare I say it, Dynamite? 🤣 🤣 🤣

I hope this so-called scandal doesn\’t hurt MMH\’s showing. I\’m having fun.

I mean I feel like @elinor and @jls943 thought I was judging him harshly for having a kitchen solely dedicated to booze without any food in sight, but I really wasn’t!!!

I hesitate to even talk about it. Some reveals connected with her ex-boyfriend’s financial scams. You know how the SK public can be…

      1
      1

Oh! That isn’t new though, is it? I heard about it, I don’t know, a year ago? Probably her new drama’s popularity has stirred new bullies…

        1
        2

What’s new is that she’s discovered to have lied about not having had any financial transactions with him. Yes, timing is definitely iffy.

          1
          1

Y’all I thought you were talking about something in episode 6 (which I have not seen yet)!!! I think that the “surprise” purchasing of that one stock (the one that was our 2ML’s only success in the past-future) is going to cause problems for both our ML and FL.

            2

The timing of the exposé is suspect of course but facts are incontrovertible.

We won’t know until there’s an investigation, or if there is one since she was cleared once. Maybe this is new info to the police, maybe not.
Let’s wait and see and not cancel her straightaways as some of these fans are doing. All that boycott talk was disheartening.

            1
            0

Agreed. This kind of online persecution of a person is very disheartening. It is as if no one has learned any lesson. I do hope she has a strong support system. Also I don’t understand how targeting a person on the basis of a online report can achieve anything. I do hope the drama on which so many people have worked so hard is not affected.

For a fluffy little sageuk, Knight Flower is not shying away from the cruelties of Joseon. But then, without that, I suppose there’d be no Robin Hooding required.

Then, they give us The Great Cat Forgery. @seeker Gosh, I can barely tell. 🤣 🤣 🤣

I love the Tiger/Cat . There are times where I wish dramas had “souvenirs” from available for purchase. I would buy a Tiger /Cat t-shirt or canvas bag with the tiger print. I am sure Beanies can think of other items.

100 Days My Prince had plush doll versions of the animated bunny and bear that closed out each episode. Which I would totally buy if they were still available.

I was rather gloomy for a bit yesterday, but kdramas to the rescue. Within five minutes of Marry My Husband #4 I was speaking to my telly:

1. I can’t believe Chef confessed already!
2. Oh ho Clark Kent, you didn’t realize you’d set up a love triangle did you? Ha!
3. Whoa, you really are Superman. How’d you get to the hotel so fast?
4. Wow, the sexism is strong.
5. Wait, is that some Korean erotica… Is this website real?

It’s not makjang, but the show moves fast! Skipping to the last five minutes for @seeker, this boy no need no makeover. He needs a make-under, post-shower, bare-faced, bare-chested or berobed. 🤭 And I was not expecting his side of the story already! So much happened. Mission accomplished. Real world forgotten, at least for a little bit.

I think i need to start speed watching this drama! I read the webtoon yesterday but i need the satisfaction of Sumin n the hubs being taken down in ‘live action’.

    3
    1

I haven’t read the webtoon but my drama buddy has. And fwiw, she says the drama is much better thus far.

The revenge is *sooo* satisfying. But you know, the school bullies are so awful that I almost (but not) felt a little bad for Su-min after she got served her just deserts.

      1
      1

Thanks for reporting in on a successful pick me up! I will start this drama tomorrow. I just finished Gyeongseong Creature (which was not at all uplifting 😮) so I’m ready for a change.

    2
    2

Ooh, I also have to report this show has some dark moments, in part because the abuse is relatively realistic. But the revenge mode kicks in swiftly and is just so darn relatable and satisfying, and thankfully the show is peppering in some really fun moments as well.

Thank you Indy!! Superman comes with Dad’s seal of approval. 💙
How cute is that cat who apparently caused ML‘s second life and then royally ignored him and left him to talk to himself.
Also apparently a TOD doesn’t need to “hit” someone for the doom.
I never thought I would say this and while I remain “cautiously optimistic” – you didn’t miss anything by skipping PMR. This is bigger and better.
While PMR and the fanwall was perfect for last year and we all had loads of fun, this is indeed a perfect start to a new year.
Happy watching to all of us!! We are ALL willing to Marry this husband. Real world forgotten. 🥳🥰👏

    2
    1

I missed that. How did the kitten cause his second life? Need to rewatch the episode. I just thought it was one of those moments, you know, showing the character being kind to animals to demonstrate their humanity or some such. 😅

If this holds up, it’ll be a great start to 2024 for me along with Like Flowers. But I’m a little once-bitten kinda gal with kdramas. Will keep it one episode at a time tho it’s harder the more I get invested.

      1
      2

It was the kitty sauntering in the middle of the road who caused him to swerve and then again to miss the ToD and over the guard rails. Whoosh!!

While you’re rewatching don’t forget to checkout the chef’s ear twitches at 02:19 while talking to Ji-won and at 03:10 while spotting the “real” husband across the road.

        1
        1

Whoa! Keen eyes. The 02:19 twitch I had to watch thrice *with* the time stamp before I saw it.

I thought ear acting was a Rowoon thing, but clearly wider spread than that.

She told him to dress better too…so…he’s gonna do it.

    2
    1

I loved these episodes, too; this show is definitely a pleasant escape from reality. I especially appreciate the way that although Min-hwan is a pretty standard jerkface whose only redeeming quality is that he’s being played by Lee Yi-kyung, Soo-min is a much more interesting and frightening nemesis. She’s acting out of sociopathic neediness and insecurity that is both diabolical and pathetic, making her a worthy adversary and the show less makjang-y and more satisfying.

    2
    1

      Perfect description!!  👏 👏
Indeed when Min-hwan said “gwaenchanha” to Su-min I just lost it. 🤣 I doubt his character has any redeeming qualities or nuance but there must be “something” (an act of miscredited kindness perhaps) which made Ji-won fall for him and marry him in the first place. For Lee Yi-kyung’s sake I hope we get a backstory but perhaps that would only merit a scene or two.
Your description of Su-min is uncannily accurate. She is deeply resentful of Ji-won but seems to have adopted a “keep your enemies close” approach. She is devious enough to hide that resentment and seems to get-off by hurting Ji-won in every way possible. She is indeed very scary. She does seem to be very wary of Ji-won escaping from her “clutches” and has kept her from forming friendships / relationships with anybody else till now. Ju-won’s burgeoning confidence and friendship with other colleagues is making her more and more insecure and maybe a trigger for her to form a relationship with Min-hwan, although she seems to have set her eyes on him much earlier considering her insinuations to the school friends.

Marry My Husband Ep. 1

Whoa! The power of negative expectations. Ep. 1 exceeded those. 😂 Quick impressions:
– Sure, it\’s nothing new, but it was a fast-paced and smooth setup.
– PMY doesn\’t turn into an insta revenge machine; she stumbles and grows into her plan. I kinda, splutters, like her.
– It\’s hard hitting about the domestic violence, outdated workplace environment and family attitudes, etc.
– I love the gender reverse: fella takes off his glasses, his long hair frames his face and…
.

.
You and me both sister.

No expectations going forward. (You know what happens to those!) But definitely watching #2.

It really was a Clark Kent moment. I wish I could gif it, music and all. Just needed for him to follow thru and rip off his shirt…no, wait, that’ll be for the upcoming shower scene or am I getting mixed up with that other time slip revenge drama. 😂

Yes and yes. 😀 I like the ML but was iffy about his “look” and the show. Then both went “challenge accepted” and here we (the viewers) go down the slippery slope all over again in the new year having learned nothing at all. 😀 For my peace of mind I’ll just take it an episode at a time just like The Matchmakers.

        2
        1

Excellent philosophy. It would make for a great drama resolution: One episode at a time. Always.

          1
          1

😳 I would balk at calling it a resolution because we all know what happens with “those”, especially at NY. But yes, I would like to follow this path. 😀

I clicked play on this myself…I haven’t made it past the pity party yet, though. I shall perservere, knowing @indyfan is my avant garde!!!

    1
    1

😂 Avant garde and this drama in the same sentence…

It’s sooo like PMR pity party in the setup but 2x as she’s a terminal cancer patient. However, -1x as she fights back even then and -1x as it moves even faster into revenge mode. So my suggestion is to watch it on 2x until she gets to that point. ☺️

      2
      1

Ooooh, she gets to the revenge part already during episode 1??

Hmmmmm. I said I’d never watch another PMY drama, and this sounds like such a dreary, drippy set-up with the terminal illness/cheating, and it seemed too close to PMR to stand up to much comparison – but now you all have me second-guessing. I may hang out with you and see if some combo of recaps and FF gets me through the first two episodes. Those screenshots have my full attention. I’ve never seen or wanted to see NIW in anything (except his unremarkable part in Twenty and suddenly feel like I’ve missed something.

            5
            0

@elinor It was a solid episode, especially picking up, as Indy said, around the 2/3 mark. It’s different enough from PMR–dare I say it has more interesting actual rules for the majick?–that I stayed interested, but I am worried that our Superman up there also knows about the time slip and that will be tedious.

I especially liked how the people in the past ARE the people in her present, she can just see through their facades–it’s not like they changed between 2013 and 2023, she can just see them for who they always were. Sort of cool.

Also, let me reiterate another thing Indy said…they’re not shying away from suggesting that the way women are treated sucks. PMY’s mic drop line in the scene in the police station actually had me raising my eyebrows. It’s not that it was earth-shattering feminism, but I was actually surprised to hear a woman in a k-drama say it.

            3
            0

@attiton Ooh. I wondered about that. Wasn’t that a plot point in PMR too?

There’s a *lot* of PMR overlap @elinor but it’s a whole another vibe. I don’t want to give it away, but I flinched at FL’s abuse—and that’s in some measure to PMY’s performance. I haven’t liked anything with her in ages myself. But she did good here.

            2

The comic starts out really well and imo gets pretty bad, so I would definitely encourage the tempered expectations.

Good to hear it is not bad bad.
