Beanie level: The Goblin’s underpants

Day 4 – The drama you couldn’t finish

I never did get around to watching the final episode of Backstreet Rookie. I tend to be a completist, so it’s rare for me not to circle back around and finish a show eventually. I just didn’t care about this one, even though I wanted to. Once I heard that there wasn’t even a kiss scene (between two known fantastic on screen kissers) I just felt like the show had given up under scrutiny from netizens.
The only other show I didn’t finish, I only watched a single episode. It wasn’t even a bad first episode, I just didn’t press play on the second episode and moved on to something else. I read a lot of beanie comments about Was It Love? but nothing that inspired me to circle back around to it.
Overall, I feel like I watched a lot of really good dramas this year, and with the shutdown was able to watch a few I’d missed over the last couple of years.

Wait a minute… I’ve seen this drama before. It was called The Third Charm. I wasn’t thrilled with this ending the first time.

Epic!! I laughed so hard my drink came out my nose! My family thought I lost it because I was watching with earphones on my laptop. #MONEY

My parents thought the exact same thing when I was CACKLING during this scene!

I was doubling over with laughter and had tears in my eyes. Roommate was looking at me with concern 😂

I was eating dinner while watching this scene. I nearly choked on my rice. My mom tsked-tsked but otherwise said nothing. She’s used to my drama-watching ways, I guess.

I actually got hopeful when SA paused after accidentally running into JY at the palace that they\’d just go ahead and reconcile and we\’d get two episodes of lovey-dovey stuff. Ugh. #Brahms #meloAF

Hey Brahmsie Beanies – I just realized that the PD of Brahms also directed Everything and Nothing the dark and touching short drama from last year. And about half of the actors make some sort of appearance in DYLB. Have you seen it? It was haunting and really well done. It was also known as 17-Year-Old’s Condition.

Record of Youth ep.7 – this scene perfectly captured for me what falling in love and dating feels like. Suddenly the air is charged and you need to kiss in the open door of the van… Feels true.

Just another way 2020 is a strange year… If you’d told me a year ago that a late season post about Stranger 2 would have 78 comments but a weecap for a show about introverted musicians falling in love would have 293 comments, I would not have believed you! I love both shows but this side by side always makes me laugh.

One has a major development, the other… uhmmm not that much (yet?)

Stranger has never been a crowd pleasing show. S1 had only around one hundred comments each recap. Not only in DB, the discussion and rating for both seasons are significant lower than many rom-com in every platforms. In the sea of feel good and fluffy shows, do we need a show that makes us feel confused, frustrated and raises many questions we couldn’t answer like Stranger? Definitely YES

@blacksesame I love Stranger 1 and 2, but it’s true that I don’t always post because I just know that I won’t know what’s up until they decide to tell me. And not in a bad way. Some shows have a suspect come out of nowhere and it feels cheap and like lazy writing. Stranger is the opposite. It will all make sense eventually, but I won’t figure it out until it’s ready to reveal itself. Season 1 had so many great shocks and twists and I’m just along for the ride with season 2. I’m sure there will be lots to talk about once we know what was going on!

Stranger 1 is considered a masterpiece but its rating is still lower than many more hyped drama. My point is It’s not a surprise that it is less talked about than some other feel good shows. I am just happy that they produced Stranger and now season 2 because we NEED this type of shows.

Stranger 1 is easily in my Top 5 shows of all time. I didn’t watch it when it aired, though. I think a lot of people watched it over the next year or so and fell in love. It is for sure a classic. There was so much excitement and fervor about Stranger 2, that you’d expect its ratings and stuff to be higher than the original, because the original had years to build up a really large, solid fan base.

Sorry if I capital “Need” in my previous reply. I read it and it didn’t come across very nice :))

Wow! Two great piano kisses tonight.

I was thinking what a coincidence it was that both the dramas had a kiss scene…but also a piano. I wonder if piano sales will go up now in Korea hahhaa

Just watched Record of Youth ep. 6. I\’m so mad at the preview after ep. 5 for making me watch this one on pins and needles! I need to watch it again without the feeling of impending doom.

Oh wow, I don’t watch previews. What was in the preview that made you so nervous?

Grandpa collapsed and then there was a shot of Hye-jun crying sitting in his family’s truck. So in every scene with darling grandpa I was waiting for him to fall over dead !

        OMG that’s so cruel!

Grandpa better survive the show or I will riot.

Ha! All the Flower of Evil and Do You Like Brahms comments finally got me bumped up a level!

DYLB? ep. 2. I loved that Hyun-ho was in Indiana for grad school! The writers did their homework. Indiana University (my alma mater!) is ranked #2 for a Masters in Music tied with Julliard!

Yes, I repeated “INDIANA” and nodded when they said that 👍🏼
Good job, show! But Juilliard is a college only, so the 2nd FL could not have attended there as a young child, except for some Saturday classes.

I wondered about that, but I only know about the college and post grad stuff. I have to say that I loved going to a university with a great music program. Having musical friends and getting to hear amazing performances for student prices was fantastic!

I decided to chalk it up to artistic license.

@bbstl I got curious about why the writers would have gotten it so right about Indiana and so wrong about Juilliard, so I Googled it like any good librarian would. I remembered that the teacher said 2nd FL had been in a pre-college program and guess what?? There really is a Pre-College Division at Juilliard! From their website: “The Pre-College Division offers a comprehensive conservatory-style music program for students 8–18 years old who exhibit the talent, potential and ambition to pursue serious music study at the college level. Students work with world-class faculty—many of whom are on the Juilliard college faculty—to develop technical proficiency while fostering creativity and intellectual curiosity.” It’s every Saturday from 9am – 6pm, so I could see her parents choosing to send her abroad to go to school in NYC and attend this program on Saturdays. I can see the show not going into details, because that gets awkward. It sounds pretty intense on the website.

I know, that’s why I said she could only have attended Saturday classes.

It\’s a holiday today in the States, and after the three day weekend I was excited to realize that it is MONDAY and not Sunday! So I get to watch Do You Like Brahms? & Record of Youth!

No! Flower of Evil has been delayed?? Does that mean we miss episodes this week or next week? Here I am hanging off the edge of a cliff…

So far, they said the filming has been delayed which means we’ll have to sacrifice some weeks at a point even if not this week (nightmare!) 😟

LJG got the script for Ep 16 (last one) and posted it on SNS just recently. So I assume they are almost done filming this show. Speaking of, I’m glad to see more K-dramas start to pre-produce their shows. And esp. with Covid-19, safety comes first esp. towards the crew who also work longer hours/other sets too.

Yes, I’m not willing to risk anyone’s health just so that I can watch a TV show! I want these guys to keep healthy so that we can enjoy their talents for many more years.

I guess we will have a delay next week since they should have the eps ready for this week airing already.
Still that’s better than delaying the last 2 eps. 😢😢😢

I just saw that My Mister is available in the US on Viki!!! I have been dying to rewatch this with my husband, and winter is the perfect time to watch IU & Lee Sun-kyun wander the streets of Seoul.

Yes, I was happy, too, when I found out a few months ago. Unfortunately none of the episodes are yet fully subbed. 🙁

    3
    2

I thought having an old drama on viki meant we’ll get all episodes subtitled, waiting to be watched. But I was surprised to find out that they will have to do it all from scratch. Idk if subbers would even have any enthusiasm of subbing a show that isn’t airing rn or is buzzworthy rn.

      3
      1

Well, this is only THE best drama of the decade. If any drama deserved VIKI’s excellent subs, it has got to be My Ajusshi, no? 🙂

        0

Yup, it’s sort of working for me because my hubby isn’t a binger so he’ll want to spread the episodes out. Hopefully with the holidays and such, we’ll stay a pace or two behind the subbers. AND this has the added benefit of stopping me from binge rewatching it in one big gulp, so I can enjoy it with him.

I’ve been watching Le Coupe de Foudre and I keep thinking that Yan Mo’s smirky smile reminds me of someone… I was driving around today, and it hit me.
