Camellia ep 7… That last scene was chilling. I think I’m fairly secure in my guess as to the killer’s identity, but I’m open to the show surprising me, too. I have a lot of questions, though. Looking forward to ep 8 and more clues.

Is anyone still watching Miss Lee? I still have no idea how I feel about it. I know they’re going for Misaeng vibes, but I’m finding it a lot more difficult to root for any of the characters. I know Kim Sangkyung’s character is supposed to be one of those jaded, curmudgeonly type characters who eventually will soften up and really come through, but after 5 episodes, I’m not seeing a single hint of silver lining.

It also doesn’t help that pretty much everyone treats Hyeri’s character like dirt. Underestimating her and looking down on her for plot purposes is one thing, but the complete lack of basic decency/manners is becoming difficult to watch. I know the company is in a dire situation in a society that’s already pretty dog-eat-dog, but man, I just want things to get better. Am I just a softie? Has my general tolerance for watching these difficult things dropped a little after the recent influx of rom-coms? 😂

I watched three episodes and bowed out. I really wanted to like it, but like you said her colleagues _are_ extra harsh towards her. Especially at the end of ep 3 where they all gang up and yell at her after all she’d done for them, and despite knowing how naive she is. I decided I couldn’t continue to watch after that.
I feel a main problem is the show doesn’t really know what it wants to be. Misaeng vibes, but also they have a lot of forced wannabe comic scenes or melo scenes that do nothing for the viewer and just make the whole thing awkward. So it feels like it wants to mesh Misaeng with Chief Kim but the characters are not half as well-written.
Like when the passcode to the CEO’s suitcase is his ex-wife’s (late wife’s?) birthday and they set it up like it’s this whole haha it’s so funny but tragic that he desperately wants to access the suitcase but cannot because he doesn’t even remember his wife’s birthday and his son knows it but the whole scene just fell FLAT.

    1
    1

Omg totally agree about the birthday/briefcase scene. I thought it was kind of SAD and uncomfortable that Philip obviously cherishes the memory of his mother who isn’t here (for whatever reason) and his dad doesn’t even remember something basic like her birthday… It wasn’t funny to me at all.

The melo vibes are kind of half-baked as well because other than Miss Lee herself I don’t see anyone else really feeling bad or apologising or growing in any way at all?? I want to sympathise but the characters feel so far-removed because everyone except that one colleague Mr. Myung (and maybe Philip?) goes out of their way to be rude/mean to Miss Lee to the point where I’m starting to really dislike them all LOL.

I don’t know if I’m ready to drop it yet, I might keep going just a little to see what else happens, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have one foot out the door already.

      1
      1

Yeah, seriously, in a drama like you’d ideally be waiting for everyone to “grow” in whatever ways and rooting for the bad guys to get their due, but all I kept wanting was for everyone to be hit on the head (sometimes not gently) LOL.

I wonder if this would have been a better drama if all of this was a flashback telling us how Miss Lee got to where she was. If we’d seen her be an actually capable CEO and then look back at how she got there. 😕

Also, do you know why calling her “Miss Lee” seems to have been a kind of derogatory way of addressing her? I couldn’t figure that out. If that was a reference or something I was missing out on.

I’ve watched through Episode 4 but don’t know if I will continue. I’m finding it difficult to root for any of the characters too. The coworkers are difficult to watch but then so is Miss Lee. She’s so painfully naïve/dumb, and I can’t get past her actions in the first episode.

GOOD MORNING BEANIES! How have you all been?

I’m back after a very busy period in school. It wasn’t easy. I still have a lot on my plate, and I miss having more time to watch and write about dramas, but I’m trying my best to find some balance. I’ve got a day off today, so I’m going to enjoy it by catching up on this week’s episodes of Nokdu and relaxing with my boyfriend.

Thank you to everyone who wrote me encouraging messages. You guys are the best!

Have a wonderful day everyone ♡

I watched Nokdu ep 2 (3+4) almost as soon as I woke up and now I’m sad I have to wait a whole week for the next couple of episodes.

The WAY I was squealing during this scene… 😍

who knew asking someone to call you Unnie would be such a squeal-worthy moment?

I felt weird because she asked “her” if she can call her Unni… There must be other ways to fall for her charms 😅

Hahaha, I know what you mean! I kind of took it as, he started out shocked/taken aback that she was asking “her” that but then got kind of caught up at how pretty she looked in the sunlight 😂

It took me FOREVER to get through the first couple of episodes of Melting Me Softly… What was the point of spending 2 whole episodes leading up to something that we already knew was going to happen?

4
3

I literally said the same thing. i ffwd’d most of it, just to learn the cast. there were a couple moments where the acting was compelling, so i’m going to stick around for another week, but honestly i’m so disappointed. I realized i sort of expected something stronger because i thought WJA wouldn’t pick a story that was a total disaster…maybe time will iron out some of the wrinkles…

    3
    1

Yeah, I’m hanging on for the next episode because I like JCW and WJA but my expectations have basically been obliterated. Once I started ffwding, I couldn’t stop. Shame. I really like the cast but the writing is really not doing it for me.

I read your fanwall post and I can’t believe you’re going to wait to watch Nokdu. I loved the first episode so much, I spent the whole day itching to watch the next one. Hats off to your discipline, omg.

Let me know what you think of Flower Crew. I love fusion sageuks and I really REALLY wanted to love this show, but I just couldn’t in the end 🙁

yeah the MMS writing is a hot mess. pity, really.

we’ll see how long i last, waiting for Nokdu. But I’m going to try. I want a good rewarding binge!

I desperately hope Flower Crew is passable. I love fusion sagueks too. My expectations are low, but I’m sort of hoping that having low expectations will help me not mind it as much and just enjoy the ride.

@bluewaters20 I finally got down to watching Miss Lee yesterday. I haven\’t watched ep 2, but ep 1 surprised me. I thought it was going to be a full-on comedy like Chief Kim, but the tone of the episode was kind of serious? I can’t say yet whether I like it or not, but I will check out ep 2 just because I want to see what happens. My interest is definitely piqued.

But first – Melo ep 15. I’m devastated it’s ending already. I’m not ready to say goodbye 🙁

HAPPY FRIDAY BEANIES! What did everybody think of Rookie Historian’s finale?

5
6

I wish there was more to the resolution of the conflicts (I think the revelations should’ve happened 1-2 episodes earlier) but I won’t complain because they got the happy ending they deserve! The bad guys are punished and our beloved characters got to choose the life they want which stay true to their characters since the beginning, and it ends with the fluffy, cheeky couple scenes that I’ve missed. So overall I’m quite satisfied with the ending. 🙂

    3

There are so many things that could have happened and this show could’ve crashed and burned in the finale episode but what they did with the ending was really satisfying. It was a really beautiful end to a really beautiful show.

    4
    0

i’m with @cherrycrumble — i wanted a little more resolution (and a little more depth in the conflicts…there were definitely some missteps in the pacing and writing overall…) but honestly i won’t complain. i came for a cute happy ending and i got it <3 the cheekiness that drew me in at the beginning was brought back full circle, so i'm happy enough. <3

    2
    0

@cherrycrumble @sensationalfantasy @anothernicole definitely with all three of you! I thought it was a nice final episode and I’m glad that wrongdoers were made to be accountable for what they had done.

I also wish there was more resolution: it would’ve been nice to have some insight into the immediate aftermath. What happened to the King (was he banished? executed like Officer Min? are we supposed to make an inference on our own)? I’m guessing Rim abdicated, leaving Jin the throne, but what of their relationship? Are they back to being friends? I’m really happy that Jin decided to do what was right in the end. For the most part, I really liked him and I’m so relieved the writers didn’t send him down a path of doom.

YAY at Officer Min being reinstated at our wonderful Office of Royal Decrees family. It’s where he belongs and I hope that the break was good for his heart/mind and that he can find happiness and peace after everything that happened to him. (Does anyone know if an ex-Crown Princess was allowed to marry after being removed from her position? Maybe in a perfect world, Officer Min’s sister could get together with Haeryung’s former husband-to-be 😂 He seemed lovely!)

I’m not surprised that Sahui left to work elsewhere. Interesting that the writers gave us a wink and nudge that Jin is sending her stuff. They’re obviously in contact. I wonder if that will go anywhere. I don’t think she would ever want to become Queen, but who knows. I wish we had gotten more from her character, but I’m glad she’s settled doing good work.

And of course, last but not least: our couple. I’d just like to start off by saying how THRILLED I am that Rim kept his entourage (Sambo and the two court ladies were underrated heroes) and that he got to go back to his first love: writing. Thank you, show, for letting both him and Haeryung do the things they loved instead of just showing them as a happily married couple. Haeryung even got promoted at work! If only this could’ve really happened back then. I feel so happy for Haeryung. Her brother is safe and well, she’s doing work she loves and believes in and she gets to be with the man she loves. If only we were all so lucky!

All in all, though the show wasn’t perfect, I had such a good time watching it. I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did, and it’s going to go down as one of my favourite fusion sageuks so far. Excited to see what everyone does next (especially Park Kiwoong. I have a soft spot for him)!

(sorry for the super long essay, you guys, I got a little carried away 😅)

    5
    2

I agree with all that you said!
And two things that would make the ending almost perfect for me is to show what happened to the king and what happened to the brothers’ relationship. We can assume they still have a loving relationship, but it would be nice if there’s a scene between the two of them to show that.
I also had a great time watching this show and it’s a drama that makes you feel good after watching it. Definitely one of my fave sageuks of all time.

If Rookie Historian ends without Dowon and the Crown Prince as best brothers forever I’m going to be so devastated…

(Spoilers in the comments!)

I spent all of last week basically with this feeling that Jin would turn against Rim and now I WISH I HADN’T JINXED IT.

I know Jin’s position as heir is important to him, the beyond the thought of losing his position, it’s being branded as a traitor that is also weighing on him and and driving his fear/hostility. Given the violent history behind the dethronement and the potential (grave?) harm he could be facing if Rim really does make a play for the throne, I fully understand his troubled heart/mind.

I’m just so sad that instead of siding with Rim and staying true to the morals/values he seems to have embodied throughout the rest of the drama, he seems to have chosen this path of hostility. Again, I know that uncovering the truth behind the dethronement could mean serious bad news for Jin. And like the King said, even if the truth comes out and he still ascends the throne against the odds, he will always be remembered as the King who ‘stole the throne from its rightful heir’. And this is also bearing in mind that Rim probably doesn’t even want the throne in the first place, so he is a threat only in theory.

Either way, I was really hoping that he would show compassion. That he would be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of bringing justice to the wrongfully persecuted. And most importantly, that he would be on his brother’s side. I mean, last week, he told Rim that they were family and that Rim was his one and only brother. Does that all count for nothing now? Their relationship was honestly one of the best bits of the show and I REALLY hope it’s not going to stay broken.

so i dropped this show and could you pls spoil me on what’s happening? what was the story of ho dam?

      0
      2

So basically, The Story of Hodam is the story of two friends and scholars, Hodam and Yeongan, who ran a school, Seoraewon, 20 years in the past. Hodam was the nickname of the dethroned King and biological father of Prince Dowon/Rim and Yeongan was the pen name of Haeryung’s father.

Seoraewon was an institution where pupils could learn Western languages and teachings in fields like medicine, biology and philosophy. Hodam, Yeongan and their students believed that expansion of knowledge beyond the scope of the traditional Neo-Confucian studies at the time would set Joseon in better stead to deal with increasing threats of foreign intervention. No one understood them or sided with them, they were branded as traitors and heretics and eventually slaughtered (Hodam and Yeongan included) during the coup executed by the regime mobilised by the current King and Second State Councillor Min.

This was all covered up after the current King ascended the throne. The deposed King (Hodam) was branded as a traitor who tortured and killed innocent people, and historical records about Seoraewon and the deposed King were forged. Records of the birth of the deposed King’s son (Rim) were also hidden (the show isn’t 100% clear on whether they were hidden or just non-existent) and in exchange for sparing the life of the newborn Prince, the Queen Dowager made a deal with the new King that the Prince would live as the son of the new King, but in virtual exile on the far end of the Palace and not be involved in state affairs.

I hope this is clear, I tried to get it all in without being TOO long-winded 😅 Let me know if there’s anything else you want to know!

Thank you! Absolutely – brilliantly summarized! So, what exactly are Rim and Hae Ryung up to? What happened to the marriage scheme?

          0
          0

Also right now—it seems to be leading up to a fight between Rim + the Historians vs. The King/Crown Prince in terms of revealing the truth and clearing the names of those who died in the uprising 20 years ago and protecting the status quo of within the Palace!
