Currently rewatching Answer Me 1997, and it brings back memories of my first time here in dramabeans. I was looking for a review of the show and accidentally found dramabeans.

The Gifted (2018) Thai drama: This reminds me so much of Gakuen Alice (tho Alice >>> the gifted). I read somewhere that it also reflects the current political climate in Thailand.

lol.. YS gave away the whole darn plot in BTS video that he is ignoring her because he is attracted to her..

actress had to remind him, he is on camera and that we are NO WHERE NEAR DIVULGING THAT FACT 😀

And then YS is like “I am kidding” with the most obvious lamest silliest made a goof up cutest smile.. AS IF (we’d believe the kidding part)

Same, Stage! While most viewers felt like the pilot episode was slow, I already loved it right off the bat! I felt Huang Yu Xuan’s pain. I was with her in her every step of getting over her grief 😭😭😭😭 And how she never really got over it 😭😭😭😭😭 Ep 2 hurt so good!

Currently watching Do You Like Brahms, and oh my God I love its melo-ness. It also helps that the MLs really know how to play the instruments. It gives me a piece of your mind/one spring night vibes.

as someone who grew up learning classical music, and is a frustrated musician, the drama so far touches issues the community experiences.

Yes and I like that the characters aren’t perfect. Male lead is gifted but knows his shortcoming. Competitions stress him out. Female lead does not seem to be talented in the area of music she wants to venture out, but that’s maybe because her low esteem is doing that to her. People constantly putting her and her dream down.

Even the second female lead is flawed. She is not on top of her game ever eversince she lost that someone she loved, her source of inspiration.

      1

So far, I’m not a fan of the second female lead at all and I’m hoping they don’t focus too much on Joon-young’s relationship with Jung-kyung. I also don’t like the luthier (what’s his name again?) very much. I’m hoping my opinion of these characters change.

Are competitions really so important in classical music? I’m curious. I know nothing about this.

      3
      2

yeah! I mean if you want to pursue it as a career, winning competitions are important for people to patronize you. Not everyone who studies classical music enters a competition. Most of my music conservatory friends end up teaching music, work in music/sound production/ or go into a completely unrelated career path. Only a few really become soloists, and most of them enter numerous competitions to build up their resume/experience and to gain more supporters. Patrons are important in the classical music world.

Interesting. I never knew this! I just realized, after looked them up, that the Chopin Competition and the Tchaikovsky Competition!

          1
          1

They are important for those who want to become soloists, but it’s a very unforgiving and critical environment. If you don’t get an award you could end up feeling like a failure after months of practicing. The fact that he was doing it for prize money would increase the pressure even more.

If what we are seeing is true, I am so glad I didn’t study music in Korea. I hate the way people think musicians are disposable once they’ve reached a certain age or their abilities are “in decline”, kind of like their idols. In my country nobody would ever turn up their noses at someone who got 2nd place in the CHOPIN COMPETITION of all things. He’d have a lifetime award here, and be a very sought-out teacher while still giving recitals. Maybe Koreans start the competition business too young?

        1

Might have something to do with the way Korean society works in general? I’m just speculating at this point, but it does seem like it’s a very competitive society and very zero-sum as well. Although, on reflection, this isn’t unique to SK; China, Japan, and India are very much like this as well.

Appreciation post for the Taiwanese drama A Thousand Goodnights (2019)! A show full of insightful words, majestic sceneries, and would make you want to return to your hometown.

Thank you for the recommendation! I’ve been looking for a new tw-drama to watch. I like this crop of tw-dramas, which are slow, meandering and yet immersive and meaningful, that is in completely contrast to the loud and gaudy rom-coms.

Hello! I think I saw in a different post that you tried to watch A Thousand Goodnights! I understand your sentiments, especially when I watched I, Myself (I saw that you recommended it!). Can you recommend other tw-drama with the same feel/genre?

Hi there! Yes, I did watch A Thousand Goodnights. The scenery was spectacular. I am sold on Taiwan. Just waiting for the lockdown to be lifted to start planning my next vacay 😀 But I did not find the drama itself as good as I would have liked. It had good material, but maybe drama length was a factor. You picked out the best parts about it, i.e., insightful chunks of wisdom, majestic and sweeping landscapes, and nostalgia for a different time.

Did you like I, Myself? I thought that is the best I have seen of this kind so far. I think Yong Jiu Grocery Store fits into this genre as well. I tried live watching that but didn’t stick around till the end. I need to revisit to see if it holds up to the ‘I, Myself’ standard I have now set 🙂 I don’t know of any other shows like this, though! Do let me know if you come across any such, as I will too.

Yeah! Same thoughts with A Thousand Goodnights! The storyline I liked the least was with Wu Po-Sen haha, I skipped those parts the most, it had too much unnecessary angst. I agree that the drama length was a factor, it could have been more tightly written with fewer episodes.

I really loved I, Myself! It had the right amount of questions to think about, and just the right pacing. I find it relaxing to watch, and at the same time, meditative. That ending for me was in-character and appropriate as well. I specifically liked how they presented the two MLs “chatting” with each other. It’s like they’re alone but at the same time “present” with each other. Even if they’re physically “alone,” they’re “metaphysically together” and I think that’s better than being physically together, but there’s no connection (FL and ex-BF). It really was creative, especially the mini-interview parts! I want to travel to Taiwan soon, hopefully after this lockdown.

You describe the “real” messaging conversations between the leads so well – that was one of the stand out things about the drama for me as well. This was quite a gem of a show, and I’m glad I watched it! Thank you also for picking it up and sharing the joy 🙂

I’ll try Yong Jiu Grocery Store soon. I’m exploring tw-dramas recently (I’ve been looking for slice-of-life/meditative-ish dramas in every country), since I’ve tried to watch every slice-of-life kdrama, and explored slice-of-life jdramas. I’m thinking of watching A Touch of Green (it’s more on the historical side/war/drama/life in the Kuomintang camp in taiwan), but I’m still not sure because of the length of episodes haha. It won lots of awards back then, so maybe I’ll try.

Ooh have you found other dramas like I, Myself? I’ve been looking for shows like this too, and feel only the Taiwanese are making dramas like this. To be fair, though, I’ve not watched non-Asian programming in a while.

I’m still exploring similar taiwanese dramas similar to I, Myself, but so far, I haven’t seen anything similar yet. Hopefully I can find other shows of the same genre from taiwan. <3

Please let me know if you do find something! A Touch of Green has been on my watchlist, but I don’t do too well with historicals, so have not ventured into it so far.
