Fan Space: Week of March 17-23, 2025

Hi Beanies! We’re experimenting with a next gen Open Thread, as some of you have asked for more chat space on a different day/time zone.

Our hope is that this will be a happy place thread that’s active all week long for chatting, sharing feels, and doing all the things we drama fans do.

How to manage med school as a k-drama devotee:

I'll be taking some time off to focus on my professional exam coming up on May. But before then, please I'll like to venture into the Japanese drama world with your highly esteemed recommendations. Please recommend a solid j-drama rom-com for a beginner.

WWW is now back to 1:PM by my time region.

I was so shocked to log in to DB around 2PM to see 34 comments already.
"imo! What happened that 34 comments dropped in less than 3 minutes 🤷🏽" Alas! The post was an hour old🤣🤣🤣.

I recently dropped a day at work. I am so close to burnout and I am so proud of myself to have taken this step even though I know my workload will increase. But at least I will have a day to myself without endless back to back meetings. Plus an extra day to catch up on all the dramas on my list? I am sure I won’t be able to watch them all because hello RL is hard! But I am so glad to find a breather for myself. I know I promised I will go back to full time again in a few months time but for now I will enjoy the momentary bliss every Friday will bring!

Oh it looks like Kim Seon-ho will make an appearance in When Life Gives You Tangerines. I wonder if his role will be important.

I didn't know Lee Joon-young had a role...

What qualities do you think an actor needs to have to be able to play a villain?

This is a genuine question I often think to myself which I don't have an answer to. The recent discussion in WWW encouraged me to put this question out here, where I said I believed Junho's Seo Yul in Chief Kim was an undercover prosecutor for more than half of the show and that was the reason I kept watching, because it's not my favourite genre. While watching, I kept feeling that he (Seo Yul) didn't have that "evilness" in him, which turned out to be true because the character wasn't written to be evil and Junho delivered. But I wonder if I, as a viewer, am supposed to hate Seo Yul at some point? Because I never did.

At the moment I'm watching Undercover High School, and Seo Kangjoon is playing a righteous character. But there were moments where I could see a tint in his eyes which made me think he could very well play a villain, that he can deliver that cold and villany gaze if he wants to.

Among my favourite actors, I can see Seo Kangjoon, Ahn Bohyun, or Woo Dohwan in villain roles, because they have that shade in their eyes, which I can't see in Ji Changwook, Park Hyungsik, Lee Jehoon, and Junho (that's why I talked about Junho's role in Chief Kim although it is not totally relevant).

@db-staff When I click on notifications and a single notification, it takes me to the article but not to the exact location/comment (it used to do that earlier). Its impossible to find where people have commented in response without scanning all the comments or doing a Ctrl-F. Not sure anyone else is facing this issue.
I tried both Safari and Chrome.

So, i draw the line at Park Bo Gum

If one fine day, there is a weird news involving him.. that day, i will conclude that it is practically impossible for anyone to remain normal human in entertainment world... unless they choose to leave the filthy industry

I saw a recap of a show called Lie after Lie (at least that's how the recapper titled it haha). Anyhoo, the plot is a pregnant woman in an abusive relationship is framed for murder and spends 10 years in prison. Fast forward to when all the reveals happen and I'm just like🤔🫤😕 over the mental gymnastics utilized for giving the perpetrator the animosity and reasoning to target an abused woman even a decade later.

I saw another recap (I haven't finished it and don't even know the title) where a mother is blamed for the death of her son (and the future heir) because she didn't die in place of her son EVEN THOUGH the brakes didn't work and the car was hit on the passenger side. But of course because the chaebol grandmother hates the mom, everyone else has to fall in line and blame/shun her too.

These are the types of plots that I can't stand and yeah, I know it's partially cultural differences but it's extremely frustrating to watch.

I don't feel this upset when watching Black Dragon maybe in part cause the grandmother isn't actually shown as much? Or maybe it's because most of the characters stand up for themselves? I don't know, but it doesn't make me as angry as older kdramas.

Started the costume C-drama, The Rise of Ning

It’s giving me similar vibes as modern C-drama, Forever and Ever in the sense that both dramas’ central plot revolves around Old Money families with lots of relationships and dynamics. Hopefully The Rise of Ning continues to keep my interest and attention (I easily watched 3 episodes in a single sitting, now on Ep. 4 at the time of this post). Fingers crossed.

Hi, nice work you are doing.
It is always a pleasure to watch one or two episodes of a kdrama after a tough day.

Completely random share of the day.
I'm taking the first TOPIK exam next month. My mind is still stuck in school mode so I don't think I can learn if I'm not testing my knowledge.

That being said: I am absolutely crap.
I keep trying to learn new vocab and I keep forgetting it because, guess what, who am I going to use it with? I've read all the tips, and they just don't work. Journaling in Korean? I don't even journal to start with; it's eating my time away. Watching K-dramas? I do it already and, o tragedy, I am not fluent at all (very far from it). Practising talking to myself in Korean? I just don't do it naturally, so I will never stick to it as a habit. So anyway, I've found an app where you can do language exchange with real people.
I started yesterday, and today, I've got already 6 on-going conversations and I am stressed out of my mind because I can't keep up with all of it. This reminds me of the old days of MSN lol (Cecee, revealing your geriatric age now)

On the plus side, a nice lady in Seoul has sent me photos of the snow fall and the cute jangdokdae her parents (who live in the countryside) keep in their garden. :)
I also terrified a guy who was asking whether I was French or British, and I spent a lot of time explaining I was both... and he instantly blocked me. No respect for my flipping efforts trying to painfully type someone half-meaningful in Korean.

The good news: It does work because vocab sticks better.
The bad news: I am getting distracted and I am not revising as much as I want to.

I don't think I can ever win against myself... argh

Again, this is not a "good", "happy" thing to share. But then again, some parts of the world are the complete opposite of good and happy right now! So I couldn't continue to delude myself. Sadness has been overtaking after realising there are parts of world where someone could be treated so poorly!

What can this sad article containing horrifying statements by a person with credibility and a position of responsibility do? It can't possibly change the overwhelming perception here that it is "wrong" to share somebody's pain; that it is "wrong" to speak out and pronounce unequivocally, the inconvenient truth! But the thing is, I found that very insensitive, considering that when it is so evident to us how inequitable Korean society is, we still want to believe "nothing was wrong", or that "nothing that despicable could have been done to her", simply because it appears so unimaginable! But worse things have happened before, and will keep happening, if this denial continues. And I am not ready for that!
🙏

Korea and kpop fans are weird.. super weird

Ages ago, plagiarism would ruin someone's career .. atleast FL of Coffee Prince was subjected to brutal attacks that too when she was focusing on the China market

And here we have Jennie with her song... blatantly plagiarized and it is topping charts.. lol

Also, highly unprofessional of her team... what kind of a global star if she can't sing an original number and the entire team has to plagiarize to get her a song

Not very knowledgeable, but i guess .. kudos to Swift.. i don't think she has ever plagiarized
