Fan Space: Week of February 24-March 2, 2025

Hi Beanies! We’re experimenting with a next gen Open Thread, as some of you have asked for more chat space on a different day/time zone.

Our hope is that this will be a happy place thread that’s active all week long for chatting, sharing feels, and doing all the things we drama fans do.

ICYMI, this is from our favorite @mary:

Hello all, sharing a fanwall downloading tool I’ve been working on:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Ak2p7K5OS6q7Xn2MSZthZwMs918iBSQu?usp=sharing
DramabeansFarewall-v1_02220220.zip is the installer. (The numbers might change a little bit when I release updates.)
sample-output-mary.zip is what the downloaded fanwall looks like, if you want to check it out before using the tool
After downloading the installer, unzip it into your desired folder and read the instructions on README.txt
Right now, the installer only works for Windows while I figure out how to make a Mac installer without having a Mac.
Some disclaimers:
– This tool was made without using special access or privileges on Dramabeans.
– Please don’t ask the DB Staff to troubleshoot this for you. I made it for free to help them, so it’d suck if me releasing this tool causes even more work for them.
I ♥ DB. It’s one of the last remaining spaces from when the internet was a nice place, and I wish it would stay online forever.

I hereby request that if anyone has downloaded my Fan Wall posts, as a whole or in part, that they delete their copies.

I would like for my work to disappear when the original context that I wrote it for disappears. I do not wish for it to be floating around on other people's hard drives.

Thank you for respecting the wishes of the creator of these works.

You are awesome @mary ingenious fantastic... thank you so much, it worked perfectly for my fanwall (I noticed a tiny typo in Readme though *cough* Minho *cough* 🙃)

A practical question, after the Fanwalldoom... the rest stays? Like our profile with the Comment tab etc? Or we are going back to old Dramabeans (before 2017)... loosing our sparkling tracksuits and rooftop dwellings?

I have a shiny new Fan Wall substitue, a Bluesky account, as @lordcobol, of course.

I think it's set up so that anyone can see it even without a Bluesky account. Just browse to
https://bsky.app/profile/lordcobol.bsky.social
to see my screenies that would have gone to my fan wall, except 😢😭

Beanies, I’ve been thinking about breakup songs lately. (Don’t worry, my husband and I are doing great!) I don’t know about y’all, but I LOVE breakup songs. Almost every kind of breakup song - I’d-do-anything-to-get-you-back songs, I’m-better-off-without-you songs, I-hope-you-fall-in-love-with-someone-as-terrible-as-you songs, I’m-trying-to-move-on-after-having-my-heart-broken songs, and especially I’m-amazing-and-this-is-your-loss songs. Sometimes it will fall neatly into one of these categories, sometimes they blend most or all of them, sometimes it’s another one entirely, but I always think they are interesting. Maybe it’s because I’ve never been broken up with? 😅

The absolutely savage ones are my favorite, but right now I’m obsessed with Highlight’s “Whatever”. It’s upbeat and super catchy and is basically about a man who discovers that his partner is cheating on him and is so sick of their lies and nonsense that he tells them to just do whatever they want. He’s gotten rid of the part of him that loved them, he says they wouldn’t even know him anymore, so will they just get out of the way? (This last bit is my favorite 😂) Obviously he’s talking a big game and I’m sure he’s hurting at the same time, but I love to see him stand up to them.

Hit me with your favorite kpop breakup songs! What kinds of breakup songs do you like? Any particularly fun/savage ones I should know about?

The first one that popped up in my head is Day6’s Congratulations. If I remember correctly the song is quite sarcastic. Like: good for you for doing well after me.

This song has been through a lot. This is their debut song, has been re-recorded if I’m not mistaken because of member changes, and with even less member now the live version is also different with the recorded ones.

I saw some non-Korean athletes use this song when they post their winning photos which they cannot really be blamed for😂

I'm not much of a music person, but the first thing that popped into my mind was 2PM's Merry-Go-Round, which isn't the type of fun/savage you're looking for in lyrics, but the rather unusual music is very captivating for me, and the choreography is beautiful.

100% I hate you by WOODZ. A very fun and very catchy song.

But on a different note - I have much more experience with friendship breakups than I do romantic ones (imo just as devastating and common but not written about nearly as much). I have a playlist called "hollow ghosts" about losing friends and gaining ghosts because of this. It's more melancholy than fun breakup songs though haha.
I don't currently have any Korean songs on this playlist (I actually am sure I could find some, I just don't/haven't yet) but some of the songs on it are "Forgive Me Friend" by Smith & Thell, "Didn't I" by OneRepublic, and "it's been a year" by Kylie Odetta.

The Process (Deluxe) by Judah & the Lion is one of my favourite albums about grief though, applicable to all kinds.

Good point about the friendship breakups. I probably have equal experience with each, but the friendship ones are more nebulous because the relationships don’t have labels that are as clear. But I think a surprising number of breakup songs work for both situations!

Highlights of Archiving My Wall Week 3

My Hyung wrote a script that downloaded my entire wall (it is 10GB and 3306 permalinks), so I’ve mostly been breezing through screenshotting stuff, trying to get past gatewall crashes and saving other people’s walls when they will load.
Shoutout to @mary for making her script available for everyone, though, 🫰

I have one thread that I have been reloading every other hour, kicking myself for not saving it before the servers got overloaded, and praying that I get lucky to be able to save it before D-Day: https://www.dramabeans.com/members/obsessedmuch/activity/6141/
It is, as far as I know, the second longest fanwall thread after @cozybook’s 1000 comment thread from last year, so I get why it won’t load BUT if anyone is successful, please let me know lmao.

Pages 29-1

- Screenshot Spamming every week after the Original (and only) Tale of the Nine Tailed (and rewatched it like twice a week because of live and group and solo watches haha)
I was supposed to write an Essay on that Show…

- Actually, speaking of
ESSAYS I MEANT TO/STILL MEAN TO WRITE AND HAVEN’T YET

➤ Tale of the Nine Tailed (there’s probably notes somewhere but it’s been a while I may have also just drafted it in my head that happens a lot, there are many others like this...)
➤ Welcome to Samdalri (notes no draft)
➤ Link: Eat Love Kill (this is actually drafted, I’ve drafted this like three times lmao, the final draft is currently at 4735 words)

- The change in how I posted about New Years over the last 8 is some drama worthy character development but I also just did not post for 2021 NY at all and between 2020-2021 you can really see my rate of posting drop, which hmmmm 👀:

2017 – 65 pages
2018 – 33 pages
2019 – 29 pages
2020 – 16 pages
2021 – 11 pages
2022 – 5 pages
2023 – 6 pages (thanks My Dearest lol)
2024 – less than 1 page
2025 – 1 post

- The Blue Camaro SS that showed up in like 3-4 dramas circa 2021 I MISS HER WHERE IS SHE I WANT HER BACK 💙

- We’ve had subway and we’ve had that fluffy green sweater and we’ve had kopiko till our ears bleed dry Bring Back Repeated (Good*) Car PPLS PLEASE
(*not EVs or Smart Cars I’m tired of EVs and Smart Cars)

- Velocirapt0r was and is still an IW because “rapt0r” is an IW and no I still do not know why.

- Hot x Hot from River Where the Moon Rises (still the only good part of that show AND the writing of them was dumb so they weren’t even that good It was just chemistry and potential)
((kdramas biggest flaw is that they’re always too obsessed with being kdramas)

- “Justification? I’ll have to make something up” (Vinnie quote)
Sic: kdrama writers everywhere

- I love how annoyed I was at Vincenzo like the entire time watching it but ESPECIALLY for its misuse of guns lmao

(Page 98 ish)

- How did Hwayugi and INAR come out at the same time wtf they do NOT occupy the same space or era in my brain

- Sincerely, Truck of Doom...

- Sincerely, Truck of Doom @sincerelytod

- The order of events goes, I use Endosolistration in a sentence, someone googles the word because they don’t know what it is, and then is immediately redirected to my fanwall, because it’s a word I coined for when Defenestration (to throw out a window) is not strong enough. I’m thinking about making a website purely for this word alone so that that is the NEW first thing that shows up when you google it LOL

- I have yet to decide where I will “migrate” my long form content to. I had twitter for a month as a joke in 2018 and that was still far too long to ever have a twitter, so I am never going to get it or any of its equivalents/replacements now. Likely, I will make some kind of blog for drama writing specifically, but I just don’t know what that looks like yet. *shrugs* Art, drama related or not, will continue to be on Instagram. I will be here for Shrovetide, and one last of these posts, but I am also probably going to disappear when the Fanwall goes, semi permanently, and also for Lent. If and when I settle on something I will no doubt ghost back in again. 💜

I have enjoyed your long form stuff. And I haven't even read all of it, just bits when I am looking for things when watching an old drama.
Anyway, general long form stuff was the things I particularly liked about dramabeans/the fanwall an I will miss it. Please come back and tell us where we can find it when you sort that out.
-Would love to read your essay on Eat Love Kill
-I'm not a writer like you are, but yes, even I have some notes for some long form stuff I was working on. I think they will probably end up as paragraphs in the Fan Space. ( I find Thinking in Long Form is easier than Writing in Long Form- I don't always have the dedication and persistence to write things- so a shorter limit makes it more likely it will actually happen)

Someday or One Day used to be on Viki, but alas is no longer there. Rainless Love is also on Amazon Prime as well as iQiyi (or at least it used to be). It is always frustrating when a really good show is impossible to find or suddenly becomes unavailable.

Announcements! Announcements!! Announcements!!!
Due to the sad and unfortunate death of Kim sae-ron, it came to our notice that the bullies had turned their target to Kim soo- hyun, blaming him for their death.
If you check his Insta handle, under his comments, international fans from Nigeria, Brazil and South Africa have taken it upon themselves to defend and report any bullies who dared to touch a single strand of his hair and it is so beautiful.
It is now a international resolution to encourage and defend any actor or actress being picked on by these nincompoops. To be sincere, I am tired of K-netz and I'm camping on Ji chang-wook's insta handle, anyone who dares to touch my baby will be chewed properly and spit out.
Please, I beg of you all beanies, let's do the little we can to help them. I'll prefer sending the love and support now than sending wreaths to their funeral.

The Veritable Records were written in classical Chinese, making them inaccessible to the average reader. In 1968, the King Sejong Memorial Society began translating the Sillok into Korean, and that project was taken over by the Korean Classics Research Institute in 1972 and completed in 1993. The Korean language version was published in 413 volumes, providing the Korean public with an opportunity to read the text directly. To enhance accessibility, the contents were digitalized and provided to the public in the form of CD-ROMs by Seoul System (later renamed as Soltworks in 2003). At the same time, the Academy of Social Sciences in North Korea, translated the Mt. Jeoksang archive version into Korean between 1975 and 1991, resulting in 400 volumes of Han-geul text.

Thanks to @mary’s testing of her fanwall downloading tool on my collection of odds and ends, I have been able to unearth my pointer to the English translation of the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty that is currently in progress. It was one of the first items I posted back in 2017. For some reason I thought that the project was supposed to be completed in 2025. Oopsie. Eight more years to go.

As a translator by training, I am agog at what has already been accomplished by the various translation teams: transcribing the Sillok from hanja to hangeul, publishing it in 800+ printed volumes between the ROK and DPRK, and then digitizing it and making it searchable online and on CD-ROM. That alone is nothing short of monumental. But then to undertake translating it into excellent English with copious annotations so that foreigners can read and appreciate the history of the Land of Morning Calm... What a stupendous achievement.

I can envision King Sejong the Great smiling in quiet satisfaction at the scholarly industriousness of the descendants of his subjects on both sides of the border.

What makes it a B -grade drama? Musings sparked by the C-drama Everlasting Longing
There are many facets to a drama. Production, Script, Direction, Art Direction, Actors are all areas that I consider important. I do not require a drama to be excellent in every facet though for me to consider it ‘A’ grade. I doubt that perfection is ever possible, but also scripting and continuity issues seem to be endemic in C-dramas in a way that make me suspect that they are never a priority to creators. (And no doubt censorship issues make continuity perfection an impossibility)
Everlasting Longing seemed to be a solid B drama for me. The standard script continuity/repetition issue is the ML/FL declares that they never want to see the ML/FL ever again. Followed by the next scene in a completely different place where the ML/FL dramatically leaves. (Why didn’t they just leave after saying they were going to leave the first time? Because of course it allows the script to draw out/repeat the emotion of leaving) The Art direction was at times woeful. They did not spend money on the supporting actors wigs,or the sets (mostly soundstage sets, with bad cgi). The production was tolerable There were real human extras. They did have horses, (but spent only basic money most horse scenes only showed the actor sitting on the horse pretending to ride, and it was often the exact same horse for multiple people) The fight choreography was basic, to the point where I ffd some fights. In a good A grade fight scene, the fight can be admired as dance and acrobatical skill. Everlasting Longing looked like someone had choreographed the main conflict points, but not given the leads anyone any time to practice. So there was no elegance or flow, and became artificial.. TBC

First thing first, I apologise @Angelshadows50 for not being able to keep my words. When you asked if I could use Mary’s tool to save beanies’ fanwalls, I happily agreed to help, simply because I had the resource to do so (My job requires me to sit in front of the computer most of the time, so I can run the script while still doing my work).

But now, upon seeing some people not happy with their fanwalls saved by someone else, I respect their wish and I hence have decided to stop doing so. I only saved beanies’ fanwalls when they asked me to do so. For the record, for the two beanies that have made their standpoint clear on their fanwall (Elinor and Seon-ha), I didn’t save their fanwalls even when asked, before they made their statements, and I’m never going to do so under any circumstance.

But the fact that Seon-ha, in addition to posting on her fanwall, posted her statement under my comment in Elinor’s post too, where I offered my perspective on why someone might save others’ fanwalls, isn’t right, and is redundant. I don’t think I derseve such act.

So, although I have no objection to anyone saving my fanwall or others’, I see no reason for me to keep spending my precious time doing a controversial thing.

Angelshadows, I know you mean well, and so do I. But I don’t think it’s worth it. This is the first time I’ve spoken in this manner on here, because I often retreat when I can, and avoid conflicts by all means possible. But when it comes to dignity, then I won’t let people think lowly of me, and I’ll make sure I’ll do what I need to do (or probably shouldn’t do) from my end. Then to each their own.

So, I’m sorry again for not keeping my words to you ❤️

I should know better than to enter a heated argument… But I still feel I should say. Yes, I would save an artwork from a burning building. Even if it was not an artwork I made. Yes, I would attempt to return it to the owner later. And if the owner told me I should have left it to burn I would shrug my shoulders and let them light a match. But I would not feel guilty about saving it from the building in the first place. And I don’t think you folks should feel guilty either.
But that’s just my opinion. ( I posted this under the fanwall comment already. But the fanwall is going to go, sigh...)

So well done in keeping your calm and putting across your point categorically in a dignified manner.

Tbh I am still somewhat in denial about the disappearance of the Fanwall. Like K-dramas the Fanwall was also very intensely emotionally engaging for me. We have had so many happy, some sad, few sour but all extremely satisfying interactions. It is amazing to connect with so many Beanies from all over the world. I have learned a lot from the Beans over at the Wall. Thank you for the memories. Let us meet on the other side (soon to be the only side) of the site more often and hang out. 😊❤🥰

@marcusnyc20 Bong-soo, Yep, the passing of the Fanwall really is in some ways like the sinking of the Titanic. But mainly it is a lesson in impermanence and the transitory nature of existence. I am grateful that I got to meet so many kind and lovely Beanies here on DB. Our personal fanwalls may be evanescing, but the rest of the website is still here.

As you had proposed, I was going to post a nice rendition of "Nearer My God To Thee," which I believe is what the ship's musicians were playing as she slipped beneath the waves. But then I remembered a song that is much more apropos… Stay tuned.

I am really surprised that you first posted on your fanwall in 2021. It seemed that we were yakking about sageuks far longer than that... Oh, wait. We were – in recap threads, and maybe in Open Thread, too. *facepalm*

Cont’d.

Glad you enjoyed the update on the English translation of the "Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty (Sillok)." I hope I'm still around and able to read it when it goes live in 2033, assuming the project hews to its schedule.

(Thread 12 that week.)

As for the Jurchens – yep, that was indeed a discussion, methinks in my DIY recap thread for GRAND PRINCE, on the perjorative term orangke (“northern barbarian,” IIRC). I’ll have to dig through my fanwall backup to see if I can locate it (or was that in one of the infamous “hijacked threads”?!?! I never got around to posting the recap of GRAND PRINCE’s final episode, but I did write it up. It is somewhere on my laptop.

@midnight put a bee in my bonnet about re-posting some of the info in English I had collated on kishotenketsu dramatic structure. I’ll do likewise for <orangke because the historical background is so interesting (e.g., the descendants / kinfolk of the Jurchens, the Manchu, became the rulers of Qing China, IIRC).

Little TV Chosun’s GRAND PRINCE (2018) (Mar.-May 2018) (Viki) was my first full length sageuk AND introduction to Yoon Shi-yoon.

LOL. It was during what I called the ‘time of the troubles’ here in DramaBeans that a Nov. 2017 Yoon Shi-yoon News Post was hijacked and it became a place for a DIY GRAND PRINCE (as you recal) recap thread with ultimately 304 comments.
Go to the final comments and you should get a laugh:

@marcusnyc20 Bong-soo, GRAND PRINCE Grand Finale FTW! Laugh gotten. ;)

Thank you so much for the pointer. That YSY news item was the closest thing we could get to a premiere watch, IIRC.

I had forgotten the intense discussions, and @wishfultoki's stepping into the breach. Manseh!

I'm glad that there are now places here at DB where shows that are not being officially recapped, wee-capped, etc., can be discussed in a more organized fashion. Having it migrate from weekly OT to weekly OT scatters it all over the place, IMHO.

Fare thee well, oh faithful Fanwall

015B: “Now Goodbye” (ijen annyeong -- 이젠 안녕)
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/015b-ijen-annyeong-english
Includes link to music.

This song is one of my very favorite examples of old-school Kpop. Immensely moving even to someone who doesn’t speak Korean, it has cropped up over the years in various Kdramas. The two that immediately come to mind are:

The behind-the-scenes special episode of COFFEE PRINCE (2007)
https://dramabeans.com/2007/08/coffee-prince-behind-the-scenes-special/

and THREE DADS, ONE MOM (2005).
https://dramabeans.com/2008/04/three-dads-one-mom/

As the Fanwall drifts off into the sunset in Beanie collective memory, I came to realize that this piece is more apropos than the last music played by the musicians aboard the sinking Titanic, especially as there is uncertainty as to which exact versions of “Autumn” and “Nearer My God to Thee” were performed.

Ijen annyeong, Dear Fanwall! Ya done good.

@midnight, I just stumbled across a tidbit on kishotenketsu that you might find interesting, and it wasn't on my fanwall. Enjoy!

@midnight, you're most welcome. But you may end up regretting it when you're buried in pointers. ;)

To recycle a vintage 1976 Toyota jingle, "You asked for it, you got it." LOL!

I didn't realize that I had sprinkled so many posts on kishotenketsu all over DB... and apparently there are more buried in my fanwall backups.

Keep in mind that this is just my $0.02. There is likely lots more information in English on kishotenketsu available now. -- I'm glad that you are finding it useful. Many thanks!
